Before you start to paint any old furniture, you will first need to prepare the surface. To do this,

you will need to strip off any varnish, shellac, paint, etc, that is on it. There are several ways to do this, depending on the finish. If the furniture is already painted, then the easiest way to strip it is to used a liquid wood stripper. When you choose a liquid wood stripper, find one that is relatively safe to work with. Many strippers contain toxic chemicals that can be harmful if the fumes are breathed in, or, if the stripper touches your skin. But, there are safer alternatives on the market. And remember, you should always work in a well – ventilated area, and you should always wear protective eyewear, as well as rubber gloves.

If the old furniture that you are going to paint has drawers, doors, or any other easily removable pieces, carefully take them out first. Remove any hardware on the furniture too, and set it aside. Then, be sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions when using the wood stripper on your old furniture. Basically, you pour it on the wood, then you use a paint brush to evenly spread it around. Washing technique is a simple, subtle way to bring texture to your room. Although it works best with warm, natural, earthy colors, you can make any colors work with a little know how and a little practice. Careful layering of different colors will achieve the best results. Using two colors will create a soft, subtle effect, but the more layers you apply the more you will enhance the depth and texture of the room. Prepping the surface is the first step. Make sure walls have been patched or repaired as necessary and make sure they are clean and ready to accept paint. Any interior paint is suitable, but latex is the easiest to work with.

Prime the walls if necessary, using a primer that has the same base as your paint. For instance, if you have chosen a latex paint use a latex primer. Following the manufacturer’s guidelines, allow the primer to dry completely then apply the base coat. You must also allow the base coat to dry sufficiently, preferably overnight. When dry prepare to wash on your second color.

You will need to thin your paint with water. If you are using semi gloss, try one part water to three parts paint, and if you choose flat paint try one part water to one part paint. You may need to make slight adjustments until you reach the desired consistency. There are two basic methods for washing. Be careful not to coat the area too heavily, as you want the base coat to show through. When this layer is dry, apply the next one in the same manner. This can be done if using a monochromatic color scheme, but is not recommended when using colors with high contrast. The colors will mix together and may create shades that you will not find appealing.

A monochromatic scheme is one that consists of various shades of the same color, like a beige base coat with taupe and caramel layers. Or, you may want to use different shades of reds. Make sure each shade is different enough to provide at least some contrast, by choosing a light, a medium, and a dark shade of the color so there will be enough of an impact, but at the same time the colors will blend well.

A fun way to perk up boring ceilings is to decorate them with unique items that normally would not be associated with decorating – let alone a ceiling. Hundreds of people have already decorated ceilings in the past with mirror tiles or carpet, but those days are over. It’s time to rip down the carpet, put on a fresh coat of paint and get started with some unconventional ways of fancying up your ceilings.

For a game room, try gluing the pieces of a checkers game to the board, then affix the entire ensemble to your ceiling. You can paint the shape of a game table around the board, or use a table top to actually attach to the ceiling. The table top can be thin and lightweight and can even be a piece of board painted to look like a table top. On another area of the ceiling, do the same thing with a chess set, monopoly board or another board game. If you want to get totally crazy, glue coasters with drink glasses to the tables, along with dice, cards or fake money. You can have a lot of fun with games like Scrabble or Boggle, where you can spell out what you want to say to your guests. Don’t forget a rug or maybe a chair or two with the legs cut short – but only if you have high ceilings.

That decor might not work for a bathroom, but you can get fish net and staple, tack or glue it to the ceiling, then hang small starfish and shells on the netting. If you have a sea theme in your bathroom already, try gluing dozens of different sized shells directly to the ceiling. Use them in their natural color, or paint different shells various colors. Among the shells you can put an occasional sea horse or starfish and if you don’t have real ones, look at a craft department for clay ones. Or, junk up the ceiling by giving the items a strewn look, like a bedspread covered in clothes, stacks of notebooks, pencils, candy wrappers, soda cans, tipped over, of course, and a small trash can with wads of paper around it. Notebooks, stacks of paper, or old school books will have to be completely glued shut before affixing them to the ceiling.

A boys room can be done in a similar messy manner, or you can attach a plastic baseball bat, football, soccer ball, and other sports items. You could also use foam shapes to spell out words like “soccer”, “football” or “basketball”, rather than hang the actual items. Or, place a set of train tracks around the ceiling, attach the engine and a few cars, then beside the tracks can be model cars, spare parts, miniature trees, logs or bridges, and other scenery.

For the nursery, attach stuffed animals, foil stars or other objects onto fishing twine or glitter cord and dangle them from the ceiling at different lengths. Or, use stickers of baby Disney characters or baby buggies, bottles and pacifiers and attach them to the ceiling. Wax polish works much like car wax: It protects the materials under the wax, while coating the exterior of the material, and adding a shiny, clean quality to the overall appearance. Wax-polish is used to protect the finish that’s already present on your furniture. It also creates a shiny, slick surface that repels dust, grit, dirt, and debris. Wax-polish lacks enough durability to protect outside furniture and other woods, but is very effective when used on interior woods and furniture.

WHEN SHOULD WAX POLISH BE USED?

Wax polish is best applied to wood which has been newly cleaned or recently varnished. Applying a fresh coat of wax over an old coat, will do nothing by create a buildup of wax. New woods should be thoroughly sealed with clear varnish before waxing and polishing.

HOW DO I CLEAN OLD WOOD?

You can remove old wax from wood in several ways:

TURPENTINE

Wax which has been sitting for many years is best cleaned and removed with thinners made of naptha or gum turpentine. Apply turpentine directly to the wood with a soft rag, and rub off (along the grain) with a piece of fine steel wool. You may need to repeat this step several times before completely removing old wax.

OIL

For easier jobs, a simple mixture of 1/4-cup linseed oil and 1/4-cup mineral spirits will work just as well. Apply with an old rag and remove with fine steel wool or paint removing pads.

COMMERCIAL PRODUCTS

There are several wood cleaners and wax removers on the market that require little more preparation than shaking the contents of the bottle. If you’ll be using a commercial pre-mixed product, be sure to read the label. Not all wax removers can be used on all types of wood or wood finishes. Follow label instructions.

Once you’ve cleaned the old wax from the wood, you’ll need to coat the surface with mineral spirits. Use a clean rag and apply spirits liberally. Allow wood to completely dry before proceeding.

WAXING WOOD

MATERIALS

Liquid wax

Clean rags (or brush or 0000 grade steel wool)

Soft cloth

Buffing machine or fine steel wool pads or polishing pads (optional)

STEP ONE

Using a soft cloth, brush, or steel wool pad (which will not damage the surface of the finish), apply wax directly to the surface of the wood using light, circular motions. Apply sparingly, using just enough to coat the wood. Wax should be applied going against the grain. You can apply wax in hard-to-reach areas (like spindles, carved areas, and etc.) using cut-up rags, specialty pads, foam paint brushes, or smaller pieces of 0000 grade steel wool.

STEP TWO

Allow waxed wood to set naturally. Wax should remain on furniture or other wood for a minimum of 5-7 minutes. Many waxes can remain on wood for up to 75-minutes, if need be.

STEP THREE

Buff wood using a clean, soft cloth. On carved or detailed areas of furniture, you may need to use furniture brush or similar object to buff the area.

STEP FOUR

Apply a second coat of wax with a soft, clean rag, this time working with the grain of the wood. Again, use circular motions and apply only a thin layer of wax, making sure all areas are covered equally.

STEP FIVE

Allow wax to set for 60-75 minutes.

STEP SIX

Buff wood with a clean rag (or similar object previously mentioned). Once buffing is done, allow wood to sit overnight.

STEP SEVEN

Using a clean rag, buff wood once more, paying special attention to corners, hard-to-reach areas and blemishes.

Note: The more layers of wax that are applied and buffed, the more glossy your furniture’s finish will become. Many feel that 3-coats is a sufficient amount of wax to protect tables, cupboards, desks, and bedroom furniture. You may wish to coat chairs (and other furniture which receives heavy use) a fourth time.

TIPS AND TRICKS:

NEVER pour wood wax directly on to wood. Always use a clean rag.

MINOR blemishes, cracks, and crevices in wood can be repaired with soft wax filler sticks.

CRACKS in dark woods can be covered by first applying a colored/pigmented wax, followed by a coating of clear wax.
