Shot Stick

For my fiance's 35th Birthday I wanted to make a shot stick. Something he could always have to remember his birthday and friends. The idea of a shot stick is when your friends are done taking a shot with you for the first time they sign the stick with a permanent marker. This way a piece of them and your memories together always stays with you.

Making Memories:

Step one: buy the size board you want. If you want a four shot board we used six feet and it worked perfectly. You may also use a ski or other type object if you prefer.

Step two: cut and sand your board. Clean board.

Step three: decorate! This is where it gets fun. I wanted to take our shot board one step further and includes all the people I love on it. I decided I would make two boards at the same time. One for us to use at the birthday part and one to have a drawing and give away to one of our friends.

Decorating my board:

I made a collage of my friends and family and printed them out on a regular inkjet printer. Just regular ole printer paper. Then cut out the pictures.

Next we are going to use our special magic fairy dust to transfer the pictures onto the clean board.

Take a paint brush and paint and slather on a layer of the Liquitex a little bigger then the size of each picture. (Don't want to coat the whole board) . You want it to be thick enough to transfer the picture and hold picture in place but not so thick it leaves bubbles. After you coat a nice layer then place the picture (picture side facing gel/board) onto the Liquitex. press it down gently and make sure you get out the bubbles. Scrape/wipe excess Liquitex away when picture is firmly on board.

The photos will start showing through the back of the paper. After about eight hours it is time to wash of the paper. Take the board, get a wet wash cloth, and gently scrub the picture. The paper will start to flake off. Wash away all of the paper layer until just the board/transfer remain.

Once you have a clean board with awesome photos transferred on, it is time to seal it.

Grab your Mod Podge and slather it on the board. Get a nice even layer. Don't worry too much about brush strokes, it will dry clear. After the Podge dried I taped off each picture so it was completely covered in tape and spray painted the board. I did the top of the board dark blue and the bottom w/ pictures copper.

Second board:
For the give away board I simply spray painted it Copper and used stencils.

Then bust out your favorite glue (I love Gorilla Glue) and glue on the shot glasses you picked out.

I simply stand in front of the end of the board and place the shot directly in the center. You don't want to put it directly at the end or the people on the end won't have places to grip the board. Once the glue is dry and the shot glasses are secure, all you need to do is grab your friends, a sharpie, your drink of choice and make some memories.

Also if your friends are as silly as mine there is a really cute app I downloaded on my IPad called IncrediBooth. It lets you take photo booth pictures. I made everyone at the party step into my photo booth.

Guess what fellow Blogging Moms and Dads: We just finished Selesnya week and to celebrate I am baking my favorite cookies: Pecan Oatmeal Chocolate Chip. What weird Magical language am I speaking? What crazy fall tradition calls it self Selesnya? A Magical One. Magic: the Gathering that is.

One of my favorite parts of fall is teaching my children the traditions of family and helping making secret traditions of our own. The weather is cooling, snow is on the way (well for you it is, I live in a desert. Don't be jealous) and you are going to have many stir crazy days to make it through. Don't stress just yet. I am going show you a simple treat to keep your little ones tummies satisfied and a card game to keep their growing minds occupied.

Being a Texan born and true, there are many traditions in my family. Football being the chief among them. It is important to me to teach and involve my children in the things I am passionate about to see what might stick. This week I will begin teaching my Daughter the game I have loved since I was fourteen years old. Magic the Gathering is a strategy game with a little spice of random chance. The cards are designed by brilliant minds and painted by skillfully artistic hands. Just look:

The great thing about Magic the Gathering is it can be as simple or advanced as the person who builds the deck. It challenges the mind on many levels. If you are interested in getting your child into a social activity that can occupy their nights at home or become an event playing at your local comic book store I highly endorse this! Now on to the yummy!

First thing first. I loaded the kids up and hauled them to our local comic store which holds Magic: the Gathering events and tournaments. It also sells tons of cards. In the newest set released Return to Ravnica you get to join a Guild and battle for the honor and glory. I am Selesnya. It reminds me of our Mommy Blogging community. The Selesnya Guild is about nature, supporting and helping the collective group. They are teachers, fighters and one.

We picked up some new packs of Return to Ravnica cards and then headed home to bake our favorite treats. Oatmeal cookies! I decided Oatmeal cookies would fit perfect with our guild choices since they are lovers of nature. We are going to put Oats, nuts and chocolate to delicious use.

What we need:

Yes. I know if this was a professional kitchen you be having Vapors at the mess. It's not though.

Let the babies help and then declare your kitchen a disaster area after all is said and done. This is about as simple and classic of an oatmeal cookie you can find in just about every cook book in the multiverse. I just prefer chocolate chips to raisins.

Ingrediants

1 1/2

cups brown sugar

cup butter or margarine, softened

teaspoon vanilla

egg

cups quick-cooking oats

1 1/2

cups all-purpose or unbleached flour

teaspoon baking soda

1/4

teaspoon salt

cup semisweet chocolate chips (6 oz)

cup chopped nuts (pecans if you please)

Go ahead and pre-heat that oven to 350 degrees. Take your softened butter and brown sugar and mix them in a bowl until completely combined and looking sinful. Add the vanilla and egg and stir until mixture gets light and fluffy. You don't need a fancy kitchen aid for this. Just use a good ole fashion spoon and elbow grease. Go ahead and throw the works at it now. Toss in the oats, baking soda, salt, chocolate chips, and chopped nuts. Stir it around until every oat is coated and you don't see any trace of white flour.

When the mixture looks something like this gooey edible mess it's time to doll out cookie drops. Get out your small ice cream scoop and scoop drops of the mixture onto an ungreased cookie sheet.

So I'm not really superstitious but I still like to do my baking in front of my Irish cross. Don't judge me and I won't laugh when you throw perfectly good salt over your shoulder.

At this point we pause our broadcast. Someone hasn't had Mom's undivided attention for ten whole minutes.

This is about the size and space you want the cookie drops on the cookie sheet. Now just shove those bad boys in the oven and cook for 10 minutes. One of the things I love Magic: the Gathering is it gives you so many chances to be an individual while also being apart of something huge. Just like baking. Here is where our roads divide I'm gooey on the inside. I take mine out of the oven at 9 minutes and let them finish cooking/cooling on the cookie sheet. You might be firm on the inside (I love you anyways, promise). If you are then you might want to leave your cookies in until 11 minutes. In baking one minute can be the difference between delicious and disaster.

Baby Boy Cake Pop Diaper Cake

One of my good friends at work just had a beautiful baby boy. I have worked with him for years and he is beyond happy to be having a son. For his baby shower I wanted to make him something special. I decided to attempt my second Cake Pop Diaper Cake!

You are going to construct this diaper cake exactly like a regular diaper cake. Decide how many tiers you want, how many diapers you want to use and roll the diapers like normal. The only difference is we are going to add edible cake pops on top for an extra special effect.

I bought all the supplies I needed for this at Party City and Michaels.

Step One: Make cake pops. I made funfetti cake pops (everything is better in rainbow)

Once the cake pops are ready it's time to construct the Diaper Cake they will go on!

You can easily pick different ribbon for a baby girl cake pop diaper cake. I can't wait till one for my friends has a girl and I get make something pink and sparkly!

Momofuku Milk Bar Baking

Do you Momofuku? Well I Momofuku. If you haven't heard of the Momofuku Milk Bar you are in for a treat.

Christina Tosi is one of my idols. She thinks outside the box in her baking and makes everything taste like it is from your grandmothers oven. If your grandmother was a Master Pastry Chef. I love cook books. I love learning. I have not been this excited about a cookbook in my whole life. I got a gift card to Williams and Sonoma from my Boyfriends awesome parents for Christmas and we right there to pick this book up. They also sell their Milk Bar cookie mixes.

If you like following along I suggest you go pick up this book because I am going to spend the next couple of months testing, baking, trying and reviewing every recipe in the book and sharing it with you. If you love to bake you will love the advice, recipes and beauty in this book

Soon we will be whipping up cereal milk, making cornflakes crunch and baking some cornflakes-marshmallow-chocolate chip-cookies. I can't wait.

Apple Pork Chops inspired by the Pioneer Woman

I am not going to lie. I dislike pork chops. I think Wolf Gang could descend from the Culinary Heaven, make me some himself and I would still not be thrilled about pork chops. Why did I make them then you might be asking yourself?

For Christmas I found an amazing deal on the Today Show for Omaha Steaks. They were offering one of their large packages of meats and stuffed potateos for only $50.00. One of the items in this large package was pork chops. So I did what I always do when I am stuck. I turned to my Blog mommy and crutch The Pioneer Woman. She had a recipe that looked like it could make pork chops not so bland and awful. I am glad I tried it. While I still dislike pork chops, if you have to eat them this is the recipe to try!

P.S. : My family thought they were awesome.

The apple/glaze sauce you are going to cook the pork chops in and later use as a pork chop topping. I used
green apples. You use what ever apples float your pork chops.

Before you start your apple/glaze you are going to brown the pork chops in the pan in a little bit of olive oil and butter. Take them out and set them aside while your glaze cooks down and gets ready for them.

Once the liquid has reduced down by half you add the pork chops, cover and cook on low for 25 minutes or so. Easy.

My awesome Mom whipped up some potatoes using the lipton onin mix. Just delicious.

I don't make pork chops ever, but when I do I use this one by The Pioneer Woman!

Man Food: Episode One: Mini Bean Pies

I am interrupting my regular broadcasting of all things girly to bring you a hearty and easy "Man Dish". My Guy likes meat, potatoes and beans. Finding different ways to feed him meat, potatoes and beans is my mission in life. The best part about this recipe is it literally takes five minutes to prepare, nine minutes to cook and you will look like you have been slaving all day. Lets dig in!

What you will need:
2 muffin pans (or one large one)
1 can of eight biscuits. (what ever brand you love best)(regular size
    biscuts not jumbo)
1 can of baking spray
1 can of black beans (or your favorite kind of beans)
   (For the black beans: The great part about making mini pies like
    this is you can put what ever you want as filling. Here I am using
    black beans but I have filled them with tuna and cheese, crab
    rangoon mix, shrimp and barbecue sauce. After sharing this with
    my partner at work she immediately went home and filled it
    with taco mix, topped it with cheese and had awesome taco pies.
    I have put a layer of Nutella in the center and filled it with
    fruit. The only limit to this recipe is the limit of your
    imagination.)
   1 cup of shredded cheese (your favorite kind of cheese) (also you
   can slice little chunks of cheese and lay them on top of the pies
   if you don't want to shred the cheese.)

Spray your muffin pans with the Baking Spray and set to the side. (HINT: always spray your pans with a light coat of baking spray when baking just about everything. Even if it says place on non-greased pan or your pan says it is non-stick.)

Preheat Oven to 350degrees.

Open your can of biscuits and separate along the pre-divided line into eight biscuits:

Take one biscuit and using a sharp knife (not a butter knife) cut the biscuit dough in half like this:

Divide all your biscuits like this. When your finished you should have sixteen biscuit halves. Placing a whole biscuit in the muffin pan and trying to fill it will not work properly. The dough will not cook consistent and it will overflow the sides once you add your filling. Plus this gives you more mini pies!

Place one of the halved biscuits in the bottom of one muffin section. Pull the edges of the dough up along the sides like you are making a pie. Try to get the dough as close to the top edge as possible without ripping the dough.

Once you have all your biscuit halves placed and fitted to the muffin pans it is time to fill them! If you are using black beans (or any beans) open the can of beans and drain the liquid. Spoon small amount of beans inside the mini pies. Do no over fill or the filling will leak of the top of your pies.

Top the mini bean pie with your favorite cheese and they are ready to place in the oven! (You can use Parmesan cheese/Velveeta cheese/shredded cheddar or what ever Chef likes!) If you can't have cheese just skip this step and they still taste amazing!

Place muffin pans in the oven and bake at 350degrees for about eight minutes. The biscuit dough will bake quicker because you cut them in half. After eight minutes check the biscuits to see how they have progressed. Baking time can vary depending on many things like which type of oven used or altitude of where you live. The first time you make them I would check every minute after eight minutes until the edges are nice and golden and the cheese is melted. When they appear ready pull out of the oven and let sit two minutes. Take a fork and run it along the edge of one pie to lift mini pie out of the muffin pan. Check to make sure it is cooked all the way through and ENJOY!!!

Christmas Cake Pop Sophistication

Attempting these cake pops is more then a year and half in the making. It was lunch time this exact time last year with my best friend Amanda. We were discussing our differences in styles. This is us...

Amanda and Heather

I am not happy unless something is dipped and dripping in glitter. While we were lunching Amanda said something that struck me (I am sure she won't even remember). She said, "My biggest problem with your cake pops and all this cake pop madness is what if you are a grown up?" "What if I don't want to eat a Princess head or some other cutesie thing." This was just about the time I brought these to work last year for Christmas:

I have been thinking about our conversation since last year. I decided for this Christmas to make a Christmas cake pop a little more on the subdued side. Something a little classier. Something I think Amanda might order if she was throwing a high class Christmas party for adults.

I decided on a simple green candy melt base with red ribbion frosting wrapped around it. (I am still working on my piping skills but I think they came out mostly decent). I hope if you are more classy like Amanda and less glitter like me these cake pops will give you some ideas for your Christmas party this year.

Now Cupcakes...Who is read for some pumpkin pie served up cute and mini style?

PUMPKIN PIE MINIS

What we will need for this experiment in yummy:

2 ready made pie crusts (If you are one of the awesome make your own pie dough types you rock)
1 large can of pumpkin pie mix (or your home made pumpkin pie brew)
Cookie cutter of choice
Lolly Pop sticks (optional)
Melted chocolate (optional and baker's choice of flavor)

Step 1:

Grab some flour and measuring cups. Dust the area you will be baking on with a light
coat of flour .

Step 2:

Roll out your pie dough to prepare for cutting shapes. Get it nice and flat but don't make it too thin
because it will need to be strong enough to hold your pie filling.

Step 3:

Use what ever medium to large size cookie cutter your heart desires. I used leaf cookie cutters, round, heart and pumpkin shape. They
also have turkey shaped cookie cutters and Santa shaped cookie cutters. The options are endless. Cut out an equal amount of pieces from the pie dough. You will need a front piece and back piece
for each mini pie you make.

Step 4:

Roll out your second pie dough and cut out shapes. This time I used a pumpkin cookie cutter for an extra touch
of cuteness.

Step 5:

Add your pie filling. If your family is not big on pumpkin you can use cherry, apple or which every pie y'all love the
most to fill the center. You want enough to fill the cutouts but not too much or it will overflow when you
try to seal the two pieces together. After you fill the center place the top piece on the piece with filling on it and use
a fork to press down and seal the edges.

Step 6:

Once you have them sealed coat the top of the mini pies with melted butter to help make it a
wonderful golden brown. I will add sugar sprinkles to give it a crunchy sweetness. You can drizzle melted
chocolate or candy melts on top when they are out of the oven to make them extra
fancy and yummy!

Step 7:
Follow the instructions for your pie filling (usually 425 degrees for most pumpkin pies) but cut the time cooked by a third. The first batch you make I would check every eight minutes or so to make sure you don't overcook. Every oven/altitude bakes different. Once they are golden brown pull them from the oven and let cool for five minutes. Drizzle with melted chocolate if you desire and then let little hands grab big bites of Holiday scrumptiousness.

Mummy Spooky Cake Pops

All children can have allergies to foods like peanuts but special needs children seem to have these allergies at a higher rate. It is a good idea when ever shipping your little hero off to school with a new batch of HeroCakePops to make sure they are labeled with ingredients for the teachers.

Now turn to page 131 in Bakerella's Cake Pop book and lets make some Yummy Mummies!

First we need one mini-hero dressed as a bee....Check!

Then we need to bake our cake - let it cool - mix it with 1/3 can of frosting - roll cake pops!

The great thing about Mummies is they can be what ever color you like best! I dipped my cake pops in white chocolate (candy melts) This part is all up to the artist/baker (or the baker's helpers)!

Then we need some green and white Yummy Mummies!! After baking the basic cake pop (I used a store bought white cake mix for ease) and cooling the mummies were ready to be painted with candy melts.I first coated all the mummies in white like described in the book. Then once all mummies were made I used green gel based coloring (never water) and tinted the rest of the white candy melt booger green! I then used a disposable piping bag to pipe on the mummy wrap!

Remember the more mess the more it looks like a Mummy! I hope everyone has Happy and

CAKES ON A STICK

We are back from having a healthy son (7lbs 4oz) and ready to get back to baking and blogging with all my sugar loving friends. We have teamed up with the WhatToExpect group and will be having an amazing give away coming up soon!

Hello Friends!

Do you like to make things sparkle? Well then you are going to love this Hologram Silver Disco Dust. This post is about where I buy some of my sprinkles and shiny things that make baking awesome.

I know it has been a little while since I have posted but I promise I have a wonderful reason. I have been preparing for this little one to come in a few weeks:

Our baby boy should be on his way into the world very soon and we can't wait. However being put on bed rest off and on has made it hard to do what I love (baking and sharing with you) and I can't wait to get back in the swing of things soon.

Until then I thought I would share a store you might not have visited yet. I purchase most my sprinkles from here and. I really love sprinkles. Sprinkles make CAKE POPS fun, yummy and pretty. The trick with sprinkles is to make sure they are not to heavy and crack the chocolate as it hardens.

Here are my favorite type of sprinkles I order: Chunky Sugar Assortment

They remind me of rock candy when I was growing up and are great for decorating CAKE POPS or CUPCAKES. I have used the black for Halloween and if I am up for baking when the 4th of July gets here I plan on using the red. They have many other type of sprinkles if chunky is not your style!

Right now we are in the "throw some scraps together and testing phase" but in May we will be doing a huge wedding cake pop spread for all our summer brides out there who like to do it yourself!

Paint Your Sweets Green St. Patty's Day!

I know. I know. It is about to be a new holiday and I am about to tell you how it's my favorite. They are all my favorite but can you blame a girl? I like to party. Of course this St. Patty's Day I can't partake of the best adult holiday tradition ever (Green Beer) but I can still get festive with it. So lets paint ourselves green and paint our sweets green too!

First we need supplies: I bought all the following supplies at Party City in their huge St. Patty's Day isle.

This cute package of cookie cutters is just what we need. We are going to use the
littlest cookie cutter to form our St. Patty's Day cake pops.

We are going to use green candy melts from Wilton (you can use what ever brand you love and I will
use Wilton because I like how it tastes the best) to dip our cake pops. I also bought an orange bag
of candy melts since orange is a huge color is St. Patty's Day as well.

These are actually cup cake toppers but will work perfectly for our
cake pops as well.

Now we shape our cake pops:

Follow basic cake pop making instructions (bake your cake, let it cool, mix in half a can of frosting to cooled crumbled cake and stir until dough like texture).

We are going to use the smallest clover cookie cutter in the package to make our cake pop shapes.

I turn the cookie cutter with the cutter portion side facing down. I then use my ice cream scoop to scoop out a small portion
of my cake pop batter. I push the batter into the cookie cutter until the thing is packed with cake pop batter.

After it is packed with cake pop batter flip over the cookie cutter and use your thumb to push out the new shape
you formed. Always push from the small cookie cutter side toward the large front to avoid distorting
your shape.

Get your dip/sprinkle on:

I found these sprinkles at Party City in the St. Patty's Day isle and thought they were super festive!

Orange is a huge color on St. Patty's Day along with traditional green so I had to give orange some love too!

If only I could have green beer to go with the green cake pops.

Got Chocolate Molds? Well I am going to show you how to use your favorite chocolate molds
with your cake pops.
       Step 1: Melt chocolate or candy melt
       Step 2: Fill your chocolate mold with the melted candy melts or chocolate and let harden fully.
       Step 3: Once the chocolate mold is hard, leave the chocolates in the mold. Dip your cake pop
                    in the melted candy melts, tap off excess candy melt, and then turn the cake pop upside
                    down onto the top of the harden chocolate in the mold. Let the cake pop harden.
      Step 4: Once the cake pop outer candy melt coating is harden pop the chocolate out of the mold like
                   normal and the chocolate piece in the mold will be glued to the cake pop.

I let the bottom mold piece harden and then placed the freshly dipped cake pop upside down to "dry"
on the chocolate piece. Once it "drys" it will be glued to the chocolate piece in the mold and you will
have a cake pop with a cute design on top.

I dipped just the sides of this cake pop in sprinkles and left the top clear so the candy melt on the top of the
cake pop would act like glue as it dried to the chocolate mold piece.

Just make sure you let the chocolate piece in the mold harden before you begin dipping and placing cake pops.

St. Patty's Day fun on a stick:

If you want the Happy St. Patty's Day words to be more visible you could paint the letters with edible
disco dust or use a edible marker to color in the letters.

I wanted to have fun with my favorite 3D chocolate cupcake mold as well!

This is my 3D cupcake chocolate mold. You can mix and match color since you harden
the cupcake top and bottom separately.

These are all yummy chocolate!

Once the cupcake mold was read I dipped the cake pop and then before it started to "dry"
I placed the cupcake on top of the cake pop. The top of the just dipped cake pop
acts like glue as it hardens to hold the cupcake up.

PS: Because I have had a few questions on this I thought I would give you a little behind the scenes action of photographing cake pops. I am getting better as I go but it is still hard getting everything right.
My photography friends say lighting is the key. I am going to eventually invest in what they call a light box for my food. Until then this is what I came up with:

Beggars can't be choosers lol. I steal my lamp from the living room to help add
extra light to the kitchen. I use my laundry basket (forgive it's fullness) to help prop
up the lamp.

My boyfriend made this amazing cake pop stand out of two cake boards. He just drilled matching holes in them
and placed pegs between the two boards. I use my daughters construction paper as my
backdrops!

And holding up our make shift backdrop is two heavy bottles of what I have on hand.
