ETTA James, whose powerful, versatile and emotionally direct voice could enliven the raunchiest blues as well as the most subtle love songs, most indelibly in her signature hit At Last, has died, aged 73.

Her manager said the cause was complications of leukaemia.

James was not easy to pigeonhole. She is most often referred to as a rhythm and blues singer, and that is how she made her name in the 1950s with records such as Good Rockin' Daddy.

She was also convincing singing pop standards, as she did in 1961 with At Last. And among her four Grammy awards was one for best jazz vocal performance, which she won in 1995 for the album Mystery Lady: Songs of Billie Holiday.

Regardless of how she was categorised, she was admired. Jon Pareles of The New York Times wrote in 1990 that she had ''one of the great voices in American popular music, with a huge range, a multiplicity of tones and vast reserves of volume''.

For all her accomplishments, James had an up-and-down career, partly because of changing audience tastes but largely because of drug problems. She developed a heroin habit in the 1960s; after she overcame it in the 1970s, she began using cocaine.

Etta James was born Jamesetta Hawkins in Los Angeles in 1938. Her mother, Dorothy Hawkins, was 14 at the time; her father was long gone, and James never knew for sure who he was, although she recalled her mother telling her that he was the celebrated pool player Rudolf Wanderone, better known as Minnesota Fats.

She was 15 when she made her first record, Roll With Me Henry. When some disc jockeys complained that the title was too suggestive, the name was changed to The Wallflower. The song rose to No. 2 on the R&B charts in 1954.

In 1960 James was signed by Chess Records, home to Chuck Berry, Muddy Waters and other leading lights of black music. She quickly had a string of hits, including All I Could Do Was Cry, Trust in Me and At Last.

She remained with Chess well into the 1970s, reappearing on the charts after a long absence in 1967 with the funky and high-spirited Tell Mama. In the late '70s and early '80s she opened for the Rolling Stones in concert.

After decades of drifting in and out of the public eye, James found herself in the news in 2009 after Beyonce Knowles recorded a version of At Last.

James' is survived by her husband of 42 years, Artis Mills; two sons, Donto and Sametto James; and four grandchildren. Though her life had its troubles to the end, James said she wanted her music to transcend unhappiness rather than reflect it.

''A lot of people think the blues is depressing,'' she said in 1992, ''but that's not the blues I'm singing. When I'm singing blues, I'm singing life. People that can't stand to listen to the blues, they've got to be phonies.''

Is ‘spiritual’ the seventh sense? We are regarded as having five senses - sight, hearing, taste, smell, and touch. The ‘sixth sense’ is the extra sense that is intuition or psychic sense. Mystics and the highly spiritually minded have identified ‘spirituality’ as the ‘seventh sense’. In my view it’s the sense of evolving humans or the ‘superhuman’. All six senses fit into the seventh sense of spirituality. We all are spiritual beings, but at this time few are aware of it, and operate in the higher dimensions of a wholistic sensitivity to all phenomenon.

Just what is it to be ‘spiritual’, or what is it that separates those living more unconsciously from those living in high consciousness? While each has it’s value, living mainly to survive, acquire possessions and activities, to have children might just well be living in a state of denial, entitlement, fear, ignorance, needless suffering, etc. The ‘spiritual’ recognize that they are a spirit living in a temple called the body to experience an evolving life of love and self awareness. To be spiritual is a commitment to endlessly seek the higher inner values of life while being in the ‘here and now’.

We’ve all been there. You visit a hookup or dating website, cruise somebody’s profile and are confronted with the list: THE, you to be not on ‘the scene’ and on and on. But what are we REALLY getting? What I find is a lot of hate when all we want to do is ‘get off’.

I always thought that the one thing we gay had down to a science was sex, but from the various ‘hookup’ sites it seems that we’ve forgotten how to have sex. Sex should be about opening possibilities, not closing them off. The negative language so prevalent signals that the culture of sexual liberation has been replaced by sexual segregation.

Now I get the “sorry, that’s just what I’m into” or “no hard feelings, it’s just my preference” and I get that we have the RIGHT to say what attracts us, however I FIRMLY believe that we have the RESPONSIBILITY to watch how we say it. Having preferences is fine, but are they neutral terms? If we were living in a culture where everything was the same...It just isn’t intelligible to look at someone and say, 'I want to reach orgasm by being f*cked, but only f*cked by a person this ethnicity or race.' Does this connection make sense?

Sexual desire is universal, but how we shape that desire is based on our willingness to pursue it. Who is to say that desire just naturally happens? Who is to say that the terms “straight-acting” or “masculine” are possible? When I’m online and someone says, ‘Are you masc/fem?’ my usual response is, ‘What do you mean by that?’ after all, aren’t those terms merely culturally relative?

I get it but I don’t understand why it is so important that we find a masculine, DL, buff man? If you’re just trying to hook up, indiscriminate promiscuity is about letting go of our notions that we should measure someone’s sexual worth based on scripted notions of race, class, gender expression and body. When you go onto your hookup site today, we MUST remember that words can beat us down and it’s within our power to change how we frame our desires. So logon and be indiscriminately promiscuous and deny that bigoted ‘masc’ guy a hookup because of his prejudiced profile. Just make sure you tell him there are no hard feelings, it’s just a preference.

Are you one of those starry-eyed guys? The ones we call a dreamer despite your eagerness to grumble about the world on its rear end? Deep down I believe that there is a place of happiness for all of us if we can just get over that one thing we've grown to hate most: LABELS!

It's easier to use them to describe groups of people or individuals. The problem with generals, however, is that the majority usually wins. What I mean is, when enough people label us as gay men, for instance, as this or that it becomes our living stereotype.

Don't believe me? Go ask your mom or 10-year-old niece to draw a picture of a gay man and see what they come up with. Similarly, we paint pictures of ourselves, especially when it comes to what we look for in other men.

Raise your hand if you've spent most of your gay dating time with a fuzzy picture of what you want in a man? What about what kind of man you are or want to be? OK, everyone except that two guys in the corner put your hands down.

Frequent trips to the club or gym would make us think there is only one type of guy all gay men want. Yes, you know him. He's our standard, gorgeous, fit, perfect against which we gauge ourselves. We tell ourselves we can't date him. Society tells us we can't live without him. But do we really want him? And if so, who is he exactly?

Research today suggests that the differences between men and women isn't found in the solar system or even in our brains, but in the way we view the world around us. The problem with theories that place men in one corner and women in the other is that they assume all men (or women) are alike.

These thoughts limit our thinking about gender and what it means to be a man. Like a jackhammer, they pound into our psyches beliefs about how men are "supposed" to behave. Usually it's defined as simply the opposite of how women are perceived.

Without labels we don't know who we are. We're uncomfortable with the idea that men show feminine emotion or women behave in masculine ways. It's better accepted when gender-bending behavior is over the top or characterized in drag, but more than a few eyebrows are raised when men behave in ways that don't typical fit male behavior. Without expectations of classic gender roles, who are we and how do we define ourselves?

A MESSAGE OF LOVE FROM ERIC JAMES BORGES

Friends say Eric James Borges, 19, killed himself Wednesday after having endured a traumatic coming-out experience.

Borges had worked for the Trevor Project, which described him as “a dedicated, trained volunteer” in its mission of preventing suicide among LGBT youth. And he’d taped an It Gets Better video that tells the story of how he “was raised in an extremist Christian household” and was kicked out of his parents’ home.

“My mother knew I was gay and performed an exorcism on me in an attempt to cure me,” he said in his video. His family told him he was “disgusting” and “damned to hell.”

Borges also described growing up bullied and eventually dropping out of high school. “I was stalked, spit on, ostracized, and physically assaulted,” he said. “My name was not Eric but faggot.”

“Back when I was in the closet, I never dreamed that I would be able to express my sexuality and have a normal relationship,” he said in the It Gets Better video.

Borges taped a video project last year that seemed to bring his dream to life. The video, shared online, shows him and another boy embracing lovingly and kissing. In outtakes, a person behind the camera can be heard whispering “That’s beautiful” as passing cars honk in support.

Watch the final version of Borges’s video project below. “The underlining subtext of this video is love is universal,” Borges wrote about the short film. “It has the strength to decimate the threshold of all prejudice, all inequity. Human relationships, and those who come into our lives, have the ability to ultimately shape who we are. There is importance in loving each other the way each of us truly deserves.”

The Trevor Project reacted to the news of Borges death with sadness.

“We are deeply saddened to hear about the tragic death of EricJames Borges, and our hearts go out to his family and friends, and his community,” a statement read. “Our main concern right now is that those affected by his death feel supported and can get the care they need.”

MEET THE MAN WHO ELEVATED MLKs VISION

Bayard Rustin played a key role in the black civil rights movement, but because he was a gay man, he was forced to work below the radar. Subsequently, most Americans are not familiar with him. But all Americans should know and learn from his contributions to equality.

Rustin began his civil rights work in the early 1940s and led the very first Freedom Ride through the south in 1947. A follower of Ghandi, Rustin publicly advocated non-violent protest, which he would later make a centerpiece of Dr. Martin Luther King’s strategy.

After arriving in Montgomery, Alabama in February of 1956 during the midst of MLK’s campaign to end bus segregation, Rustin began strategizing how to raise King’s national profile and looked for opportunities for him to address the nation. Though Rustin was a key organizer of the 1963 March on Washington, he had distanced himself from Dr. King by then to prevent a threatened smear campaign based on Rustin’s sexual orientation.

Gay men and religion have a sorted relationship. Religion is used too often to demonize us and our relationships even though many guys hold religious and spiritual beliefs in higher powers, as they define them.

Underneath the judgment, however, are gay men who have relationships with varying faiths, religions, and spiritual practices. Many remain dedicated, regardless of what houses of faith say about men loving men. Others choose personal spiritual relationships that are more one-with-one and less one-against-many. Some don't practice at all.

Regardless of religious or spiritual practice, how important is it in your relationship? Are you comfortable maintaining your beliefs in a relationship where your boyfriend thinks otherwise? Would you share an inter-faith relationship? Or, as opposite, is a religion a deal breaker?
