Gorgoroth is a Norwegian Satanic black metal band formed in 1992 by guitarist Infernus after making 'a pact with the Devil'. The band is named after the dead plateau of darkness in the land of Mordor from J. R. R. Tolkien's fantasy novel The Lord of the Rings.

Gorgoroth are known for their satanic-themed and anti-Christian lyrics and have drawn controversy due to some of their concerts, which have featured impaled sheep heads and mock crucifixions. On February of 2004, Infernus and Gorgoroth performed a controversial live gig in Kraków, Poland, which was meant to be released on DVD by Metal Mind Productions. Due to the satanic nature of the live show, the band and DVD producers were accused of breaking the Polish blasphemy laws. The tapes from the concert were confiscated by the Polish police for 4 years, but the concert was finally released on DVD in summer 2008, as Black Mass Krakow 2004.

The band's founder and guitarist Infernus is openly a theistic satanist and considers himself "Satan's minister on Earth" and formed Gorgoroth to express his Satanist beliefs. The band's former vocalist Gaahl is openly anti-Christian. Both vocalists were openly supportive of the church burnings perpetrated by members of the black metal scene in the early 1990s.

The band is named after the mythological river Acheron located in the underground kingdom of Hades in ancient Greek mythology. Satanic Warmaster is a Finnish black metal project from Lappeenranta, Finland, consisting of the sole musician "Werwolf" (real name Lauri Penttilä). Penttilä began recording under this name in 1998. His lyrics deal mainly with nature, folklore, Satanism, and "occult and warlike themes". The band's name comes from the title of a 1994 demo by Lord of Evil.

In a 2003 interview for the Finnish metal webzine Imperiumi, Werwolf explained his personal beliefs in a detailed manner: "Pan-European traditional Satanism is a comprehensive ideological and philosophical alignment, which aims for the bettering of an individual and the most beneficial elbow space through the acknowledgement (and partially harnessing) of the dark and destructive (and thus initially creative) force of nature and cosmos. Excluding anything has never been the best option. Satanism constitutes my world view about 100%".

Ghost is a Swedish rock band known for its eccentric on-stage presence. Seven of the group's eight members, known as "Nameless Ghouls", wear virtually identical, face-concealing costumes. The band was formed in 2006, when future band leader Tobias Forge wrote the song "Stand by Him". He said, "I said that this is probably the most heavy metal riff that has ever existed ... When the chorus came to me, it haunted my dreams. Every time I picked up the guitar, I ended up playing that progression, and when I fit the words in, it seemed to cry out for a Satanically-oriented lyric."

Ghost's lyrics are often Satanic in nature and their Satanic theme has proven problematic for the group, especially in the US. The members of Ghost mimic the Roman Catholic Church, but have reversed the image to worship Satan instead of the Holy Trinity.

Prior to a 2017 lawsuit filed by former members of the band, lead singer Tobias Forge obscured his identity behind a succession of characters bearing the title of "Papa Emeritus". Portrayed by Forge in a prosthetic mask and makeup, the persona has been described as a "demonic anti-pope", and has undergone five incarnations: I, II, III, Nihil, and IV.

Their song "Ritual" was chosen by Kerrang! as one of "The 50 Most Evil Songs Ever."

Twin Temple is an American rock and roll/doo-wop duo formed by the married couple and self proclaimed practicing satanists Alexandra and Zachary James in an attempt to challenge the metal dominance within Satanist music.. They call their genre Satanic doo-wop. Their lyrics reference Satan but also deal with themes like Satanism, sex, love, and also social issues such as individualism, feminism, and LGBT-rights.

Coven is an American rock band formed in Chicago the late 1960s. In addition to pioneering occult rock with lyrics and aesthetics that explicitly dealt in themes of Satanism and witchcraft, they are recognized by metal fans and metal historians as being the band that introduced the "Sign of the horns" to rock, metal and pop culture.

Their debut album Witchcraft Destroys Minds & Reaps Souls (also known as simply Witchcraft) was removed from the market soon after its release in 1969 due to controversy, as it coincided with the hysteria surrounding the Manson family and rampant media speculation about occult influences on the American counterculture. Despite its brief initial release, it remains a classic of its genre, and in some ways set groundbreaking trends for later rock bands. This album marked the first appearance in music of the sign of the horns, inverted crosses, and the phrase "Hail Satan". Today, these are characteristics of the heavy metal genres. Witchcraft Destroys Minds & Reaps Souls concluded with a 13-minute track of chanting and Satanic prayers called "Satanic Mass" (written by their producer, Bill Traut, of Dunwich Productions, and described as "the first Black Mass to be recorded, either in written words or in audio"). This Satanic Mass was also the first time Latin phrases such as "Ave Satanas" were used in occult rock music, and later Satanic and black metal bands continued this innovation. Also included inside the album was Coven's infamous Black Mass poster, showing members of the group displaying the sign of the horns as they prepared for a Satanic ritual over a nude Dawson lying on an altar.

Blood Ceremony is a Canadian occult rock band formed in 2006 in Toronto, Ontario. The band's style style has been described as "flute-tinged witch rock" and their lyrics are filled with black magic imagery and references to classic horror films. Their music has been also characterized as hard rock, psychedelic folk, progressive rock, and doom metal. Singer/flutist/organist, Alia O'Brien, claimed that their distinct sound is the result of each band member having different musical influences.

Formed in 1998, Watain is a Swedish black metal band famous for their Theistic Satanist views and for their live shows which involve pyrotechnics, candles, Satanic rituals, limbs and bones of animal carcasses, and blood. The band has often been compared to Dissection or considered to be influenced by Ofermod. All lyrics, unless contributed by members of other bands, are written by vocalist Erik Danielsson, who summed up their topics as "the religion they are based upon, Satanism, or – to avoid confusion – Devilworship". Watain also supports the Misanthropic Luciferian Order, a cult which is associated with animal abuse and murder. The band's members are alleged to have killed pigeons and even attempted to buy dogs from the homeless as a source of blood for their concerts.

Cannibal Corpse is an American death metal band formed in Buffalo, New York in 1988, now based out of Tampa, Florida. The band's lyrics and album artworks draw heavily on horror fiction and horror films and frequently feature transgressive and macabre imagery, including depictions of extreme violence and gore. At different times, several countries, such as Germany and Russia, have banned Cannibal Corpse from performing within their borders, or have banned the sale and display of original Cannibal Corpse album covers.

Dissection

Dissection was a Swedish extreme metal band from Strömstad, formed in 1989 by guitarist, vocalist and main songwriter Jon Nödtveidt and bassist Peter Palmdahl. Jon and some of Dissection's members were members of the Misanthropic Luciferian Order - a satanic occult order founded in Sweden in 1995 and later renamed Temple of the Black Light. The band split up in 1997 due to Nödtveidt's imprisonment for complicity in the murder of Josef Meddour. After his release, Nödtveidt reformed the band in 2004 with new members who he felt could "stand behind and live up to the demands of Dissection's Satanic concept." On August 13th of 2006, frontman Jon Nödtveidt committed suicide inside a circle of lit candles with a Satanic grimoire in front of him which is believed to be a copy of the Liber Azerate written by Frater Nemidial, leader of the MLO.

Dissection released a number of live albums and EPs before its final dissolution, and played a central role in the development of Sweden's black metal and death metal scenes.

Mayhem is a Norwegian black metal band formed in 1984 in Oslo. They were one of the founders of the Norwegian black metal scene and their music has strongly influenced the black metal genre. Mayhem's early career was highly controversial, primarily due to their notorious live performances, the 1991 suicide of vocalist Per Yngve Ohlin ("Dead") and the 1993 murder of guitarist Øystein Aarseth ("Euronymous") by former member Varg Vikernes ("Count Grishnackh"), of Burzum.

De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas is the first full-length studio album by Mayhem and is widely considered one of the most influential black metal albums of all time. According to a long feature by Metal Hammer, "Two decades after it was recorded, it continues to top ‘best album’ lists by longtime fans of the genre, while at the same time providing primary inspiration for new bands whose members were not even born when it was recorded. There are many who would say it is the single most important album in black metal’s broad and ever-growing catalogue, and very few who would argue that it is not, at the very least, a strong contender for that accolade." Metal Injection described it as "one of the most essential black metal albums of all time", writing that "In one record, the listener is exposed to all the power, glory and contradictions inherent in Norwegian black metal, thus making it a fascinating artifact from the dark past, and an essential piece of black metal listening." De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas was included on IGN's list of "10 Great Black Metal Albums". Metal Hammer named it one of the 20 best black metal albums of the 90s. Loudwire named it the 8th best extreme metal album of all time, writing that "The riffs are unforgettable and the atmosphere is caustic and suffocating with Attila Csihar’s twisted, throaty cries sending it all to Hell. They also argued that the album has a "stranglehold" on "black metal's legacy." Treble Magazine named it one of the 10 essential black metal albums, writing that "The circumstances surrounding the album were certainly grim, and even for how influential Vikernes is on the genre for his work as Burzum, he will never not be the guy who murdered Euronymous (not to mention a hate mongering racist), but De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas is nonetheless a key recording in black metal’s evolution."

While Mayhem's previous vocalist had been Swedish, Csihar was from Hungary. His style was somewhat atypical for Nordic black metal then, and provoked a mixed reception from fans; for example, Metalreviews.com gave him the nickname "Attila 'Fingernails' Csihar" (although a subsequent review by the website praised his later Ordo Ad Chao-era performances). The song "Freezing Moon" was included on Kerrang!'s 25 Extreme Metal Anthems and various songs from this album have been covered live and in studio by such bands as Dissection (Jon Nödtveidt and Ole Öhman also performed the song with Euronymous in 1991), Immortal, Dark Funeral, Carpathian Forest, Gorgoroth, Behemoth, Vader, Enslaved, Cradle of Filth and Darkmoon. "Funeral Fog" was covered by Emperor with Csihar on vocals.

De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas was released in May 1994, around the time that Vikernes was sentenced. It featured the last lyrics written by Dead before his suicide, and the last songs recorded by Euronymous before his murder. Euronymous's parents asked Hellhammer to remove the bass tracks recorded by Vikernes, but Hellhammer said, "I thought it was appropriate that the murderer and victim were on the same record. I put word out that I was re-recording the bass parts, but I never did".

The title De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas is a Latin phrase meaning "About the Mystery of the Lord Satan", although the correct Latin would be "De Mysteriis Domini Satanae". The album cover is a monochrome photo of the east side of Nidaros Cathedral in Trondheim, Norway.
