We've all seen the hype: "We'll put your plan in front of thousands of investors!" "We'll write you an award-winning online business plan!" "Only $3,000 for thousands of investors to learn about your company!"

I cringe every time I see one of these ads. Vultures are preying on honest business people who want to fund their businesses. Here are some ways to spot them:

1. "Only qualified investors see your business plan." Yeah, sure. And who "qualifies" them? Have a friend try to sign up as an investor (that part is usually free). How is she "qualified"? Is there a background check? Does she submit a financial statement? Odds are that she will be asked to do nothing more than sign a statement that she has a certain net worth. That's no "qualification" in my book. So who are these "investors"? Who knows. One could be your strongest competitor.

2. "You approve anyone who sees your business plan." Okay. So what are you going to do to qualify the potential investor? Are you going to run a background check? ask for ID? ask for tax returns? or just be so happy that anyone wants to see your business plan that you jump on the idea? (That's how these scams get away with charging thousands of dollars -- too many entrepreneurs are desperate for funding.)

3. "It's only $500 (or $300 or $100) to register." What does it matter if it's free? If it is diverting your time and energy and resources away from finding a viable investor, it's not worth it.

4. "Your idea is great, but we need to put it into our format. This will only cost $800." Don't walk -- run from these guys.

5. "Your idea is so great that we want to invest $2,000 in it." (That's after you spend $5,000 to put it into "their" system.) Do I really need to comment on this?

6. "Talk with a satisfied customer, or 2 or 3." Here's this entrepreneur who just got $2 million in funding, and he has nothing better to do than sell the web scam to you? Trust me, entrepreneurs who just get funded barely have time to eat, let alone talk.

7. "Look at all these written testimonials." This is harder to disprove because the testimonials look so real -- even the companies might be real. But unless the testimonials, and the companies, can be verified independently, I wouldn't trust them. And I'll lay odds that they cannot be verified independently.

There is one huge exception to this: ACE-Net (http://activecapital.org). This is more properly the Access to Capital Electronic Network run by venture capitalists, institutional investors and individual accredited investors. It was developed by the U.S. Small Business Administration's Office of Advocacy to encourage the creation of a national marketplace for investors to find and invest in equity offers by small companies.

ACE-Net isn't for all companies. Those seeking under $1 million will probably find the paperwork daunting. Those seeking over $5 million won't qualify. There are special qualifications, and of course lots of forms to fill out -- but nothing like the forms required for a formal initial public offering.

But for those who do qualify, it's an amazing tool in raising financing. Spend some time with the website and the forms, and see if your local SBA office can put you in touch with another company that went through the process.

As with any investor tool, don't rely exclusively on ACE-Net. Use it in conjunction with your personally developed targeted funding search. This, combined with an exceptional business plan, doesn't guarantee success but it places your company head and shoulders above all the rest.

Having a set of "questions to answer" about your business

forces you to take an objective and critical look at your ideas.

Putting it all down on paper allows you to change, erase and

refine everything to function in the manner of a smoothly oiled

machine. You'll be able to spot weakness and strengthen them

before they develop into major problems. Overall, you'll be

developing an operating manual for your business--a valuable tool

which will keep your business on track, and guide you in the

profitable management of your business.

Because it's your idea, and your business, it's very important

that YOU do the planning. This is YOUR business plan, so YOU

develop it, and put it all down on paper just the way YOU want it

to read. Seek out the advice of other people; talk with, listen

to, and observe, other people running similar businesses; enlist

the advice of your accountant and attorney--but at the bottom

line, don't ever forget it has to be YOUR BUSINESS PLAN!

Remember too, that statistics show the greatest causes of

business failure to be poor management and lack of

planning--without a plan by which to operate, no one can manage;

and without a direction in which to aim its efforts, no business

can attain any real success.

On the very first page, which is the title page, put down the

name of your business-ABC ACTION--with your business address

underneath. Now, skip a couple of lines, and write it all in

capital letters: PRINCIPAL OWNER--followed by your name if you're

the principal owner. On your finished report, you would want to

center this information on the page, with the words "principal

owner" off-set to the left about five spaces.

That's all you'll have on this page except the page number

Following your title page is the page for your statement

purpose. This should be a simple statement of your primary

business function, such as: We are a service business engaged in

the business of selling business success manuals and other

information by mail.

The title of the page should be in all capital letters across

the top of the page, centered on your final draft--skip a few

lines and write the statement of purpose. This should be direct,

clear and short--never more than (2) sentences in length.

Then you should skip a few lines, and from the left hand margin

of the paper, write out a sub-heading in all capital letters,

such as: EXPLANATION OF PURPOSE.

From, and within this sub-heading you can briefly explain your

statement of purpose, such as: Our surveys have found most

entrepreneurs to be "sadly" lacking in basic information that

will enable them to achieve success. This market is estimated at

more than a 100 million persons, with at least half of these

people actively "searching" for sources that provide the kind of

information they want, and need.

With our business, advertising and publishing experience, it is

our goal to capture at least half of this market of information

seekers, with our publication. MONEY MAKING MAGIC! Our market

research indicates we can achieve this goal and realize a profit

of $1,000,000 per year within the next 5 years...

The above example is generally the way you should write your

"explanation of purpose," and in subtle definition, why you need

an explanation. Point to remember: Keep it short. Very few

business purpose explanations justify more than a half page long.

Next comes your table of contents page. Don't really worry

about this until you've got the entire plan completed and ready

for final typing. It's a good idea though, to list the subject

(chapter titles) as I have, and then check off each one as you

complete that part of your plan.

By having a list of the points you want to cover, you'll also

be able to skip around and work on each phase of your business

plan as an idea or the interest in organizing that particular

phase, stimulates you. In other words, you won't have to make

your thinking or your planning conform to the chronological order

of the "chapters" of your business plan--another reason for the

loose leaf notebook.

In describing your business, it's best to begin where your

statement purpose leaves off. Describe your product, the

production process, who has responsibility for what, and most

importantly, what makes your product or service unique--what

gives it an edge in your market. You can briefly summarize your

business beginnings, present position and potential for future

success, as well.

Next, describe the buyers you're trying to reach--why they need

and want or will buy your product--and the results of any tests

or surveys you may have conducted. Once you've defined your

market, go on to explain how you intend to reach that market--how

you'll these prospects to your product or service and induce them

to buy. You might want to break this chapter down into sections

such as..publicity and promotions, advertising plans, direct

sales force, and dealer/distributor programs. Each section would

then be an outline of your plans and policies.

Moving into the next chapter on competition, identify who your

competitors are--their weakness and strong points--explain how

you intend to capitalize on those weaknesses and match or better

the strong points. Talk to as many of your "indirect" competitors

as possible--those operating in different cities and states.

One of the easiest ways of gathering a lot of useful

information about your competitors is by developing a series of

survey questions and sending these questionnaires out to each of

them. Later on, you might want to compile the answers to these

questionnaires into some form of directory or report on this type

of business.

It's also advisable to contact the trade associations and

publications serving your proposed type of business. For

information on trade associations and specific trade

publications, visit your public library, and after explaining

what you want ask for the librarian's help.

The chapter on management should be an elaboration on the

people operating the business. Those people that actually run the

business, their job, titles, duties, responsibilities and

background resume's. It's important that you "paint" a strong

picture of your top management people because the people coming

to work for you or investing in your business, will be "investing

in these people" as much as your product ideas. Individual

tenacity, mature judgement under fire, and innovative

problem-solving have "won over" more people than all the AAA

Credit Ratings and astronomical sales figures put together.

People becoming involved with any new venture want to know that

the person in charge--the guy running the business knows what

he's doing, will not lose his cool when problems arise, and has

what it takes to make money for all of them> After showing the

"muscle" of this person, go on to outline the other key positions

within your business; who the persons are you've selected to

handle those jobs and the sources as well as availability of any

help you might need.

If you've been in business of any kind scale, the next chapter

is a picture of your financial status--a review of your operating

costs and income from the business to date. Generally, this is a

listing of your profit & loss statements for the six months, plus

copies of your business income tax records for each of the

previous three years the business has been an entity.

The chapter on the explanation of your plans for the future

growth of your business is just that--an explanation of how you

plan to keep your business growing--a detailed guide of what

you're going to do, and how you're going to increase your

profits. These plans should show your goals for the coming year,

two years, and three years. By breaking your objectives down into

annual milestones, your plan will be accepted as more realistic

and be more understandable as a part of your ultimate success.

Following this explanation, you'll need to itemize the

projected cost and income figures of your three year plan. I'll

take a lot of research, an undoubtedly a good deal of erasing,

but it's very important that you list these figures based upon

thorough investigation. You may have to adjust some of your plans

downward, but once you've got these two chapters on paper, your

whole business plan will fall into line and begin to make sense.

You'll have a precise "map" of where you're headed, how much it's

going to cost, when you can expect to start making money, and how

much.

Now that you know where you're going, how much it's going to

cost and how long it's going to be before you begin to recoup

your investment, you're ready to talk about how and where you're

going to get the money to finance your journey. Unless you're

independently wealthy, you'll want to use this chapter to list

the possibilities and alternatives.

Make a list of friends you can approach, and perhaps induce to

put up some money as silent partners. Make a list of those people

you might be able to sell as stockholders in your company--in

many cases you can sell up to $300,000 worth of stock on a

"private issue" basis without filing papers with the Securities

and Exchange Commission. Check with a corporate or tax attorney

in your area for more details. Make a list of relatives and

friends that might help you with an outright loan to furnish

money for the development of your business.

Then search out and make a list of venture capital

organizations. Visit the Small Business Administration office in

your area--pick up the loan application papers they have--read

them, study them, and even fill them out on a preliminary

basis--and finally, check the costs, determine which business

publications would be best to advertise in, if you were to

advertise for a partner or investor, and write an ad you'd want

to use if you did decide to advertise for monetary help.

With listing of all the options available to your needs, all

that's left is the arranging of these options in the order you

would want to use them when the time come to ask for money. When

you're researching these money sources, you'll save time by

noting the "contact" deal with when you want money, and whenever

possible, by developing a working relationship with these people.

If your documentation section, you should have a credit report

on yourself. Use the Yellow Pages or check at the credit

department in your bank for the nearest credit reporting office.

When you get your credit report, look it over and take whatever

steps are necessary to eliminate any negative comments. Once

these have been taken care of, ask for a revised copy of your

report and include a copy of that in your business plan.

If you own any patents or copyrights, include copies of these.

Any licenses to use someone else's patent or copyright should

documentation. You should also include copies of any leases,

special agreements or other legal papers that might be pertinent

to your business.

In conclusion, write out a brief, overall summary of your

business- when the business was started, the purpose of the

business, what makes your business different, how you're going to

gain a profitable share of the market, and your expected success

during the coming 5 years..

The last page of your business plan is a "courtesy page"

listing the names, addresses and phone numbers of personal and

business references--persons who have known you closely for the

past five years or longer--and companies or firms you've had

business or credit dealings with during the past five years.

And, that's it--your complete business plan. Before you send it

out for formal typing, read it over once a day for a week or ten

days. Take care of any changes or corrections, and then have it

reviewed by an attorney and then, an accountant. It would also be

a good idea to have it reviewed by a business consultant serving

the business community to which your business will be related.

After these reviews, and any last-minute changes you want to

make, I'll be ready for formal typing.

Hire a professional typist to type the entire plan on ordinary

white bond paper. Make sure you proof-read it against the

original. Check for any corrections and typographical

errors--then one more time--read it through for clarity and the

perfection you want of it.

Now you're ready to have it printed and published for whatever

use you have planned for it--distribution amongst your partners

or stockholders as the business plan for putting together a

winning financial proposal, or as a business operating manual.

Take it to a quality printer in your area, and have three

copies printed. Don't settle for photo-copying..Have it printed!

Photo-copying leaves a slight film on the paper, and will

detract from the overall professionalism of your business plan,

when presented to someone you're trying to impress. So, after

going to all this work to put together properly, go all the way

and have it duplicated properly.

Next, stop by a stationery store, variety store or even a dime

store, and pick up an ordinary, inexpensive bind-in theme cover

for each copy of your business plan. Have the holes punched in

the pages of your business report to fit these binders and then

slip each copy into a binder of its own.

Now, you can relax, take a break and feel good about

yourself..You have a complete and detailed business plan with

which to operate a successful business of your own. A plan you

can use as a basis for any financing proposal you may want to

submit..And a precise road-map for the attainment of real

success...

Are you thinking about setting up your own business? Have you an idea for a new business but are unsure about how to proceed? Other people are willing and happy to take the risk and see it as a way of getting out of the rat race.

When you have an idea for a new business you then need to think of a name to call it. I would keep this name quite short as it makes it easier to remember for people. It obviously needs to have something to do with the business sector you are entering.

You will now need to work out how much money you will need to set up the business. This can be quite daunting but is essential. In the short term I would advise to keep these start up costs as low as possible, you can always buy or rent better machinery in the future as an example.

Once you are aware of how much money you need, you then have to find it. You may have enough yourself via savings or a redundancy payout, however most people are not in this position. If you do not have enough money, you could try and raise money via the family, by seeking a partner or by releasing the equity from your house. There is also the option of a business loan.

The next stage is to market your product or service. There are many ways of doing this including:

The internet via a website

An advert in the newspaper

Direct marketing in the form of leaflets

An advert in the yellow pages

Exhibitions

Trade fairs

I would advise finding out where other people from your industry advertise as they will have tried and tested many of the above options.

You then need to work out how much to charge for your product or service. I always keep these charges fairly low at the outset in order to attract as many people as I can and to get some income in. I then hope that word of mouth will take over and the idea is that after a few months I will be in a position to increase my fees.

It is also important to realise that we will make mistakes along the way. When this happens we need to think positive and not to beat ourselves up. It is an experience we can learn from.

Always have belief in yourself. At times any business will go through a rocky period, this is when we need to be strong. In my opinion the more work we put in, the more rewards we are likely to obtain.

Self-discipline is one of the keys to your success. Being able to choose your own hours of work may seem like a dream but it can prove to be many peoples downfall. We have to ensure that we work the required amount of hours. It is far too easy to stay in bed for that extra hour or to arrange yet another game of golf. These things are fine once you are established, but this is a long way off at this stage.

Mechanical Vacuum Boosters are dry pumps that meet most of the ideal vacuum pump requirements. They work on positive displacement principle and are used to boost the performance of water ring /oil ring /rotating vane /piston pumps and steam or water ejectors. They are used in combination with any one of the above mentioned pumps, to overcome their limitations. Vacuum booster pumps offer very desirable characteristics which make them the most cost effective and power efficient option.

The major advantages are:-

(a) Can be integrated with any installed vacuum system such as Steam Ejectors, Water Ring Pumps, Oil Sealed Pumps, Water Ejectors, etc.

(b) The vacuum booster is a Dry Pump as it does not use any pumping fluid. It pumps vapor or gases with equal ease. Small amounts of condensed fluid can also be pumped.

(c) Vacuum boosters are power efficient. Very often a combination of Vacuum Booster and suitable backup pump results in reduced power consumption per unit of pumping speed. They provide high pumping speeds even at low pressures.

(d) Boosters increase the working vacuum of the process, in most cases very essential for process
performance and efficiency. Vacuum Booster can be used over a wide working pressure range,
from 100 Torr down to 0.001 Torr (mm of mercury), with suitable arrangement of backup pumps.

(e) It has very low pump friction losses, hence requires relatively low power for high volumetric
speeds. Typically, their speeds, at low vacuums are 20-30 times higher than corresponding vane
pumps / ring pumps of equivalent power.

(f) Use of electronic control devices such as Variable Frequency Control Drive allow to modify
vacuum boosters operating characteristics to conform to the operational requirements of the prime
vacuum pumps. Hence they can be easily integrated into all existing pumping set up to boost their
performance.

(g) Vacuum boosters don't have any valves, rings, stuffing box etc., therefore, do not demand regular maintenance.

(h) Due to vapor compression action by the booster, the pressure at the discharge of booster (or inlet of backup pump) is maintained high, resulting in advantages such as low back streaming of prime pump fluid, effective condensation even at higher condenser temperatures and improvement of the backup pump efficiency.

The Table below gives a rough estimate of how the boosters enhance the working vacuums of the processes when installed in combination with various types of industrial vacuum pumps currently used in the industry. They can effectively replace multistage steam ejectors, resulting in considerable steam savings and reduced loads on cooling towers. Mechanical Vacuum Boosters are versatile machines and their characteristics depend largely on backing pump. Various types of backing pump can be used, depending upon the system requirement and ultimate vacuum needs.
However, the final vacuum is governed by the suitable selection of the backing pump and booster
arrangement. The table below gives a broad range of vacuum achieved with various backing pumps combinations.

For example, if a process is using water ring Pump, the estimated working vacuums would be of the order of about 670-710 mmHg gauge (90-50 mmHg abs.), largely depending on the water temperature and pump design. When a Booster is installed prior to the water ring pump, in series, the vacuum levels of the order of 5-10 Torr can be easily achieved. In a Multi-Stage booster installation, vacuum levels of the order of 0.5 Torr & better can easily be expected. Mechanical Boosters offer a completely dry pumping solution and do not add to any vapor load, unlike steam ejectors, and therefore, do not require large inter stage condenses. At low vacuums, higher pumping speeds are required to maintain the through-put, since the specific volume increases with the increase in vacuum. Vacuum boosters enhance the pumping speeds by about 3-10 times depending upon the selection by virtue of which one can expect higher process rates and through-puts. The drawbacks of steam ejector system such as sensitivity to motive fluid pressures and discharge pressure are overcome easily by the Mechanical Boosters, since the volumetric displacements/pumping speeds are insensitive to the inlet & outlet working pressures.

Booster Operation:
Power Constraints restrict the total differential pressures across the booster. This demands to ensure the total differential pressure across the Booster must not exceed the rated limits. This can be ensured by any of the following means:-

1.) Manual method:- Initially the fore pump is switched on until the required cut in pressure is achieved and there-after the booster is switched on.
2.) Auto method:- Installation of mechanical By-pass arrangement across the booster or hydro kinematic drive or Variable Frequency Drive (VFD). In this arrangement, the booster and fore pump can be started simultaneously from atmosphere.

However with the installation of Electronic Variable Frequency Control Drive all the conventional methods can be bypassed since the drive is programmed to regulate the Booster speed automatically, keeping the load on motor within permissible limits. This allows the Booster to start simultaneously with backup pump. When the backup-pump and Booster are started the drive reduces the Booster speed to the pre-set levels and as the vacuum is created the Booster speed picks up, reaching the final pre-set speed, giving most optimum performance over the entire range. Since all the parameters are easily programmable, one can adjust the booster pumping speeds to match the system requirements easily and quickly. The drive limits the current to the motor and safeguards the motor against over voltage, under voltage, electronic thermal, overheat ground faults. i.e. protects the motor against all possible faults.
External computer control over all aspects of booster performance is possible via RS485 serial interface built into the drive electronics. This enables the Booster to be integrated into any computer-controlled operating system.

A flyer is an inexpensive and highly effective way to grab attention in a very busy marketplace. How do you make your flyer stand out in the crowd? Here are some techniques that professional designers use to make flyers "pop."

1. Write a snappy headline or title.

Make it memorable, unusual or provocative using a few carefully chosen powerful words. Popular titles contain one or more of these words: Easy, The Secrets to, Unlock, Finally, Insider, Time Sensitive, How to, Free Bonuses, Now You Can, Discover, Proven.

2. Use colorful or striking graphics.

One large image will have more impact than many smaller images. A stunning photo or illustration grabs attention, creates a mood, and supports your story. This image is your "focal point" and will draw your readers in. You can purchase inexpensive but quality stock photos on the Internet. Download individual photos or purchase a CD with hundreds of images.

3. Focus on the benefits of your product or service.

Your prospects will ask the question, "What's in it for me?" Write from the their perspective using the words "you" and "your." Avoid using the following words: we, us, I and our. Be sure to keep your text short and to the point. Some of the most powerful words to use are: free, save, love, new, results, and guarantee. 10. Offer a discount or special limited-time price.

Design a coupon on the bottom quarter of the flyer. Be sure to clearly state the deadlines and limitations of the offer. If it is a mail-in coupon, be sure to include the payment specifications with areas for filling out credit card information, mailing address, etc.

As the 2008 starts I think it benefits us all to look back at what has transpired. It's been a great year!

This year more than any other I see so searches for the work at home jobs on the Internet. You see searches for phrases like best home job legitimate work at home, home job, from home job, and best 2007 work at home.

Many people have made a New Years resolution to create more income for their families, spend more time with their families and other New Years resolutions. If it's like mine, some will be fulfilled, some will not.

There are many programs that were very popular in 2007 that I think warrant serious consideration. As a web site owner I realized that there were several key areas that need to be considered before deciding the 2007 Top 10 programs types. Well, actually there are many criteria that come into play, but stepping back it boils down to two things. They are as follows:

* Monitor companies on a real time basis to ensure they stay consistent.

As web site owner it's easy to realize that you can do the up front research, but it becomes harder to monitor many programs on a real time basis. This is something I learned from a guy in Louisiana. I worked with him in a different business way back when...

I learned a ton from this guy whether he knew it or not...it's too bad he is not successful in business yet, because he really has some good insight.

I brought it up that you need to want success...want a business that will earn you profits.

We spoke of hobbies, and how we need to treat our business like a business! and how a hobby never pays the bills, they only cost money.

SO WHAT'S THE SECRET?

It all comes back to having that "dream" or a reason why. But it's more than that...

It's hunger; you need to be hungry. Be starving for success. You know when you can't focus on anything else except that need to eat? You start getting the shakes and you need it. Now bring that feeling and transfer it to your business.

So you need to be hungry. And the insight that this young guy had was a one liner, and picture this in a Louisiana accent; "well there are times you could eat...but you are not necessarily 'hungry'." well how huge is that?!?

I say it all the time, that I learn from you guys as much as you learn from me! That was one of those AHA moments.

Of course, we could all eat a little bit of success, but are we hungry?

So, now every time I look at my business and think to myself "it's just not growing as fast as I want" (which, if you are like me, is never fast enough). I need to ask, "am I still hungry?" And every single time I can answer no. I have become comfortable where I am at.

This brings me to another quote. "Success is found outside our comfort zone." Think about that! If you want to be better than you are now, you need to look beyond yourself and expand. Whether it be physically, mentally, spiritually or financially. You need to stretch yourself beyond where you are now.

So if you are having a tough time getting into action; you look at yourself in the mirror and ask if you just need a bite of success, or if you want the 5 course meal!

A Critical Tip To Make An Outsourcing Project Successful

Understanding what you want to accomplish is critical to a successful outsourcing venture. Although there are many who claim to offer offshoring procurement services, the fact remains that only the business contemplating outsourcing can determine the what, who and when of any offshore service project.

To this end, a business needs to understand the WHAT of any outsourcing project. The what of course, is what will be outsourced. It's not enough to simply state we're gong to outsource IT technology services, or Human Resources, or any other facet of the business. To determine the WHAT means an intimate understanding of how your business is currently handling that work.

So the first order of business when considering outsourcing is:

Define the current Process. This should be done with an understanding of requirements. Requirements should be clearly defined in such a way as to eliminate ambiguity and offer a measurement method. Fast service is NOT a metric. Answering and resolving a specific type of customer inquiry within x number of minutes IS a requirement.

The exercise of defining the current process allows you to understand the details of what actually needs done. This information will be needed when/if transferring that process over to your new outsource partner.

Now would also be a good time to do a cost benefit analysis on the proposed process. This allows the business to have a solid estimate of the current operating costs of the process under consideration for outsourcing. When doing this analysis, be certain to honestly consider all the costs involved.

I was involved with a major technology company who insisted that any cost that couldn't readily be quantified, be marginalized or simply ignored. They based the decision to outsource their internal help desk for thousands of people based on a simple statement; "Support call costs will go from 25 dollars to 6 dollars." Problem was that they didn't cover all the costs. Although they required calls to be answered within a certain period of time, they didn't set a resolution time. When support was in house, an engineer could call for support and get a resolution in hours. After the transfer however, that same call took a minimum of 3 days and sometimes over a week for resolution. The cost in lost productivity to the company because the engineer didn't have access to his files and email were never considered in the simple statement above. If the total costs were considered, the savings would have been much less significant.

So the key tip is to know your process and costs prior to considering offshoring any project. By being armed with solid information, it's then possible to select the right outsource partner and make a good decision for the business.
