Play Atari Breakout on Google’s Image search

Google is commemorating 37 years of the Atari’s famous game Breakout, which was introduced way back in April 1976, by letting users play the game on Google’s Image Search.

Simply click on Images in Google Search and then type Atari Breakout. The Image search results will then align into blocks and a little easter egg at the bottom for you to play the game.

You get five lives to play the game and at the end you can post your score to Google Plus if you want. Frankly speaking its addictive and its unlikely you will get any work done once you start playing.

Incidentally, the task of designing Breakout’s prototype was given to Steve Jobs, who nicely passed it on to his friend Steve Wozniack, who ended up completing it in 42 days. More on that here.

Google announced on Monday that it is giving users “15 GB of unified storage for free to use… between Drive, Gmail, and Google+ Photos,” thus giving them more flexibility to use their data space as they see fit. Users who want more storage across multiple services can pay $4.99 a month for 100GB of additional space as well, the company said. The new unified data plan will give a particular boost to Google Drive since the cloud storage service will act as the hub for online storage across all Google services.

With this new combined storage space, you won’t have to worry about how much you’re storing and where. For example, maybe you’re a heavy Gmail user but light on photos, or perhaps you were bumping up against your Drive storage limit but were only using 2 GB in Gmail. Now it doesn’t matter, because you can use your storage the way you want.

‘Project Glass’ is a research and development program by Google to develop an augmented reality head-mounted display (HMD) named Google Glass. Project Glass product displays information in a smart phone-like format hands-free, and can interact with the Internet via natural language voice commands. It was started about three years ago by an engineer named Babak Parviz who was an electrical engineer as a part of Google’s X Lab initiative.

Google is looking ambitious to bring its Google Glass wearable computer to market much faster than many likely anticipated, according to the Verge. Google has revealed that it hopes to have the commercial version of Glass available for sale to ordinary consumers by the end of 2013. The cost is expected to be under $1,500. This is the most clear Google has been yet about its public release schedule for the headset-mounted computing device. Earlier in June 2012, Google co-founder Sergey Brin suggested that a rough timeline for developer and consumer availability would put the device in the hands of the general public in 2014.

This time, a Google official has said directly that the company is targeting an end of year release date and the credibility of the source cannot be debated. Google’s recent release to a broader audience beyond just developers via an application process indicates things might be moving quicker than the company previously expected.

The Verge has also mentioned that, it is compatible with i-Phone devices as well as Android handsets. They also were convinced that this is something that Google will eventually be able to turn into a device with mass-market appeal.

Inspired from a video I saw some days back on Youtube, Here is the gist of the new product from the freedom lines of Google which will be launched if Google+ doesn’t proves to be a success..!!!

The new product will be named as “Google Minus”.

You won’t have to beg for a beta invite or a sign-up. If you use Gmail, Google- will automatically be added to your google bar.

Google is being really smart here because they have realized that the reason most people will just stick with Facebook is because it is too much of a hassle to start over on a new network and build up friends from scratch. So on google- every members starts as friend with every other member and you can narrow or minimize your social network by subtracting friends.

You have a universal feed and you can mute every post that you don’t like. There is also a dislike button and a thumbs down button because these days majority of status updates are pretty depressing and being able to dislike stuff will is much awaited.

Google- also has a feature of street alert. So, when you go anywhere with your smart phone and you have to had your Gmail enabled as your main email account for this to work. Whenever you pass someone else who uses google- you both will be sent street alerts linking to the other persons profile. It is a great way to make friends with total strangers who can’t be Internet creepers because you met in the real world.

There is also a voice chat option that connects you with a randomized friend from your network to be in touch with each other, making this even simpler.

And a feature that automatically writes happy birthday on your friends profiles for you which you can customize with all options like exclamation “Happy Birthday!!” or all caps: “HAPPY BIRTHDAY”.

There are a lot of people who are more interested in thumbs down and dislike more than liking some-one’s status or any posts.!!

You this will bring a revolution in anti-social networking..!!! (This will happen if Google is again defeated by Facebook in social networking).

Now that's new... Is it?! MS has launched its own So.cl or rather Social Networking Site. The site seems to be a combination of social networking, search, and media sharing and has a user interface resembling every social networking website that’s currently popular.

According to VentureBeat, “So.cl is pronounced “Social”. It was being billed as an “experimental research project” and was only available to students studying information and design at the University of Washington, Syracuse University, and New York University. While the project is still billed as experimental, it’s now open to anyone who wants to give it a shot. “

Users can sign in via their Facebook or Windows Live account. The site is linked to search, which means that what a user searches can be viewed by other So.cl users. Interestingly third parties also have access to searches.

Once a user logs in they will notice that So.cl appears to be a mish-mash of Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest. It has a user feed which is similar to the Facebook feed. It will also tell you if any of your Facebook friends are using So.cl.

The newsfeed will show searches by other So.cl users if you click on everyone. The left-hand column has various options for newsfeed settings ranging from: Everyone, Following (people you’re following on the site), Conversations (your conversations with others on the site) and Posts (the messages you put up).

The activities column on the left-hand side also has an option called parties which shows videos that you have posted on the site. It’s safe to say that after Google plus Hangouts, Video Parties is perhaps the lamest term that has been used on a social networking site.

You can post a message on the site which again works like a status message on Facebook. Users can tag it according to interest, links etc. Tags can be any search related terms and not just friends’ names like Facebook.

Microsoft seems to be jumping on the social media bandwagon a bit too late. The search on the site is powered by Bing naturally and seems to be an attempt to make search results more niche, more social. Its advisable to change your privacy settings on the site. For those who long in via Facebook, you are likely to get emails to the account that you use to log into Facebook. Emails from unknown people might appear in your inbox via So.cl.

For now the site appears to be a bit slow. Each section is taking some time to load. Obviously Microsoft has a lot of work to do on this one.

The big question: As a user do you want the most relevant search results or just results that friends seem to be sharing? Doesn’t Facebook already do that, showing us what our friends are reading? In that sense So.cl doesn’t seem to be doing anything revolutionary for now.

Deleting your browsing history before March 1 when Google's new privacy policy comes into effect will limit Google's ability to track and record your every move online. The process is simple. Follow the steps below:
1. Go to the Google homepage and sign into your account.
2. Click the drop-down menu next to your name in the upper-right hand corner of your screen.
3. Click accounts settings
4. Find the "Services section"
5. Under "Services" there is a sub-section that reads "View, enable, disable web history." Click the link next to it that reads: "Go to Web History." (Note: When you click "Go to Web History" you may be taken to a page which gives you the options "Turn Web History On"/"No Thanks": Click "Turn Web History On" and you will finally be taken to step 6 below)
6. Click on "Remove all Web History"
When you click on "Remove all Web History," a message appears that says " Web History is Paused." What this means is that while Google will continue gathering and storing information about your web history it will make all data anonymous, that is, Google will not associate your Web History information with your online accounts and will therefore be unable to send you customized search results.
Google's ability to gather personalized information about you by assigning data to your Gmail and YouTube accounts will remain "Paused" till you click "Resume."

Users of the new operating system say the upgrading process is buggy. But once the kinks are worked out, customers are liking Windows 7 a lot more than Vista

Microsoft launched Windows 7 in late October to much fanfare. But, just like with previous Windows upgrades, complaints about bugs have already started rolling in.

A whopping 31% of clients have reported problems with upgrading to Windows 7, according to a recent survey of more than 100,000 customers conducted by consumer helpdesk firm iYogi.

"Most of the problems that customers have with Windows 7 have to do with installation, or application and data migration," said Vishal Dhar, co-founder of iYogi. "These are all fixable problems, but they're annoyances and they're time consuming."

One common gripe, experienced by 9% of installers, is that the half-hour to an hour-long upgrade process gets to the "62% completed" point and then freezes. It's a problem that Microsoft is aware of, and can be fixed by rebooting the computer, going into advanced settings, and typing in a code that instructs the computer to ignore plug-ins.

However, issues didn't stop with the upgrade process. Many users still experienced glitches even after successfully installing Windows 7 on their machines.

Most common among those complaints was that basic "applet" programs, like Mail, Movie Maker and Photo Gallery, were missing. That's because Windows 7 deletes those programs and makes users download them from the Windows Live Essential Web site. IYogi said 26% of their customers were confused about that extra step.

Others had problems getting their computers to work properly: Eight percent said their DVD drives couldn't be found and 2% couldn't sync their iPhones with Windows 7.

One in seven users also complained that the sleek new "Aero" theme doesn't work. The Aero theme enables users to see through a window to view the desktop or other programs that are open behind it. According to iYogi, most of the 14% of users that have problems with Aero don't have the graphics capabilities on their PCs to handle the program.

Other common complaints included an inability to view file extensions, too many "mini-dumps" (memory images saved on the computer when it crashes), problems with the "Aero snap" feature, changes to custom icons and problems with the new taskbar.

Microsoft (MSFT), which debuted Windows 7 on Oct. 22, did not return requests for comment.

Smoother sailing once it's debugged. Once the bugs from upgrading have been worked out, users have had a relatively hassle-free experience. And those who bought a new computer with Windows 7 preloaded have seen the fewest issues.

"Customers who finally get it up and running love Windows 7," said Dhar. "We haven't had a lot of people calling for usability issues, because it's a much more intuitive interface than Windows XP."

That's not to say that Windows 7 is perfect.

According to Zeus Kerravala, an analyst at Yankee Group, one of the biggest annoyances with the new operating system is that the "ribbon menus" at the top of programs have been redesigned and must be relearned. In previous Windows versions, the menus remained very consistent (File, Edit, View, Insert, etc.), but in Windows 7, they can be wildly different from application to application.

"It took me a long while to figure out how to print," said Kerravala. "Microsoft tried to improve the user interface, but there's a learning curve because it's inconsistent."

Microsoft also did away with many favorite applications like Windows Movie Maker, which is particularly surprising given the propensity of cell phone videos and Flip video camera movies.

But all of the gripes about Windows 7 pale in comparison to the angry complaints about Microsoft's previous Windows iteration, Windows Vista. That version was an outright disaster after it was released in 2007. Vista was plagued by bugs, software incompatibilities, sluggishness and annoying security alerts. The episode nearly destroyed the tech giant's reputation with consumers.

"While there are a few bugs, I haven't seen or heard of any show-stoppers," said Laura DiDio, principal analyst at ITIC. "In fact, just the opposite. Some Vista users can't wait to upgrade. So far, this has been a home run for Microsoft."

The search engine giant silently pushed out Google Dictionary. It has pretty neat usage examples along with standard dictionary-like features such as definitions and synonyms.

Google Dictionary also displays related phrases, related languages and Web definitions from the likes of Wikipedia.

You can also star words for later reference.

It also has Translator options (don't confuse with Google Translate) where you can translate the meaning of English word to your own regional language.

for example - I have translated the English word - " Human " and found out the meaning in my regional lang " Tamil ".

Google launches online news reader 'Fast Flip'

Internet giant Google unveiled its "Fast Flip" online news reader on Monday, featuring stories from major media outlets, including the BBC, The New York Times and The Washington Post.
Google, which launched Fast Flip at the TechCrunch50 technology conference in San Francisco, compared using the quick-loading product to flipping through the pages of a magazine "really fast without unnatural delays."
Fast Flip allows users to quickly browse through news stories from the websites of Google's three dozen partners.
A Web surfer can quickly jump from one article to the next using large arrows at speeds significantly faster than the time it usually takes to load a Web page.
"As the name suggests, flipping through content is very fast, so you can quickly look through a lot of pages until you find something interesting," Fast Flip developer Krishna Bharat, a Google engineer, said in a blog post.
Other companies supplying content include magazines such as the Atlantic, BusinessWeek, Cosmopolitan, Elle, Marie Claire, Newsweek and Popular Mechanics, as well as online news sites TechCrunch, Salon and Slate.
The Mountain View, California-based Google has had a strained relationship with some US publishers and Bharat said the Internet company would share advertising revenue from Fast Flip with its media partners.
The firm's popular news aggregator website Google News has drawn fire from a number of US newspaper owners for linking to their articles without payment.
The Internet search and advertising heavyweight has dismissed the criticism and countered that it is providing newspapers a free service by driving traffic to their websites.
"Partners will share the revenue earned from contextually relevant ads" on Fast Flip, Bharat said. "This gives publishers an opportunity to introduce new readers to their content."
The new feature, the Google engineer argued, will allow readers to scan articles faster, thus reading more of them and bringing more ad revenue to publishers.
"The publishing industry faces many challenges today, and there is no magic bullet," he continued. "However, we believe that encouraging readers to read more news is a necessary part of the solution."
With print advertising revenue and circulation declining, US newspaper publishers have been actively searching for ways to earn more money from the Web, including possibly charging for content online.
Fast Flip allows readers to browse stories by topic, by publication or by "most viewed," "most popular" or even "recommended."
It shows only the first page of a story and users who want to read more have to click through to the website of the host publication.
Through the feature, users can share content with friends or members of a social network and Google said it is offering a mobile version.
For the moment, Fast Flip is considered an experimental "Google Labs" product. It is accessible at fastflip.googlelabs.com

uTorrent’s 2.0 Beta Finally a Good Citizen

Almost four years since uTorrent had its debut, the development team has now released a version 2।0 Beta of their BitTorrent client with significant improvements and updates. BitTorrent tracker owners in particular have been looking forward to this release as it finally implements support for UDP trackers, turning it into a ‘good citizen’.

uTorrent for Windows saw its first public release in September 2005, and soon became the most widely used BitTorrent application by far. Recent estimates show that uTorrent is the client of choice for more than half of all active BitTorrent users.

Needless to say, all significant changes to uTorrent affect millions of users and the entire BitTorrent infrastructure. With the release of its 2.0 Beta the client introduces breakthrough changes that offer a helping hand to its users, ISPs and most of all – tracker owners.

In comparison to HTTP trackers, UDP trackers use less resources and put less strain on their servers. Since almost all public trackers now have a UDP variant, it can save tracker owners a lot of hardware and thus money.

Using UDP is generally a good idea to bring down load on popular trackers,” said uTorrent developer Arvid Norberg when commenting on the implementation of the newly added feature. “We want uTorrent to be a good citizen and not hammer trackers.”

“Hopefully client support will be wide spread enough at some point, so that trackers that currently spend 99% of their capacity on misbehaving clients flooding it with HTTP requests can turn that off,” Norberg added.

Although Norberg’s comments suggest that uTorrent is one of the first to implement UDP tracker support, they are in fact quite late to the party. Vuze, BitComet, Deluge, KTorrent and rTorrent are just a few of the clients that have implemented this feature already.

However, with its massive market share uTorrent is the one that really makes a difference, and this new feature will be welcomed by all major BitTorrent tracker operators. The benefits of UDP trackers will not go unnoticed by users either since they do not interfere with HTTP traffic, meaning that associated web-browsing slowdowns will be a thing of the past.

Aside from smoother web-browsing, users will notice a few other changes in uTorrent 2.0. For starters the new speed guide is a welcome addition. By using Google’s measurement lab servers, uTorrent users can now test their connection speed and let the client automatically pick the best settings based on the results.

Unfortunately Google’s lab servers are all located in the US, which makes the results less accurate for uTorrent users in other parts of the world. The uTorrent team hopes that they can provide optimal results for these users at a later stage. “We anticipate that the server coverage will improve and cover other continents better in the future,” Norberg commented.

With the 2.0 Beta, uTorrent also enjoys several improvements to its uTP support, which makes the client more network aware hoping to decrease the load for ISPs as well. uTP support can be enabled or disabled at the user’s request.

The new Beta has something in store for everyone, and although users are free to play around with it, we should note that this is not a stable release and that bugs and unexpected crashes are possible. The latest release as well as a feedback thread can be found at the uTorrent forums.

I started getting this error message on my HP Windows Vista Laptop and for no reason known to me the Internet stopped working.

I checked the Internet and found it could be a problem with TCP/IP getting corrupt!

So I tried to restart in safe mode with Networking and saw that Internet was working there!

Then I tried winsock correction using the command netsh winsock reset , and restart the computer in normal mode.

And the Internet was up and running

Ubuntu's boot time to 10 seconds

The developers behind the Ubuntu Linux distribution aim to significantly improve boot performance. Their ambitious goal for 2010 is to reduce total boot time to 10 seconds.

The growing adoption of the Linux operating system on netbook devices has compelled Linux distributors to focus on improving startup performance. Ubuntu 9.04, which was released last month, is one distribution where these improvements are particularly noticeable.

In a presentation at the Ubuntu Developer Summit in Barcelona, developer Scott James Remnant noted that boot time decreased from 65 seconds in version 8.10 to only 25 seconds in 9.04. This is already a substantial improvement, but he believes that there is still room for more aggressive optimization. Canonical, the company behind Ubuntu, will continue pushing the limits of boot performance during the upcoming development cycle for Ubuntu 9.10, which is codenamed Karmic Koala. According to Remnant, the company aims to achieve a ten-second boot time next year for Ubuntu 10.04, the release that will follow after Karmic.

In a message posted to the Ubuntu developer mailing list, Remnant describes how the additional boot performance improvements will be achieved. An important part of their speedy startup strategy will be getting the Xorg display server up and running as soon as possible. This means that a big part of the focus will be cutting down the amount of time that is needed to bring up the components that have to be in place before Xorg can start—the udev device manager and initramfs, a temporary filesystem that is loaded into system memory to facilitate the startup process.

Initramfs is mostly responsible for mounting the root filesystem and loading the requisite kernel modules. It also plays a role in the logic for software RAID, disk encryption, booting from a network filesystem, and a bunch of other similar tasks. Remnant wants to slim it down and remove some of the unnecessary “cruft” that is bogging down the startup.

There are established time budgets for individual parts of the boot process. Those targets will have to be met in order to fulfill the goal of a ten second boot. Remnant says that loading the kernel and initramfs should take two seconds, driver loading, filesystem mounting, and other “plumbing” should take two seconds, launching Xorg should take two seconds, and the remaining four seconds should be used to launch the desktop environment and other services that are part of the user’s session. The computer should be fully booted and ready to use at the end of ten seconds, he says.

One of the side effects of starting Xorg sooner, he says, is that the boot splash and associated progress bar will no longer be displayed at all. That’s a pretty surprising revelation and it should give you an idea of just how substantial the performance improvement will be from a user’s perspective.

“In the default case, there will be no splash screen,” he wrote. “I hope to demonstrate that X can be started sufficiently fast that we don’t need one.”

The reference hardware for benchmarking is the Dell Mini 9, a netbook that is available with Ubuntu preinstalled. Although a single netbook has been selected as the benchmark target for the purpose of consistency, it’s important to note that the ten second goal is for the regular desktop Ubuntu installation. Remnant expects that they can go even further with hardware-specific versions of Ubuntu that are customized for netbook devices.

“10 [seconds] is a good number, especially for a generic, hardware agnostic, non-stripped down Linux distribution. From that starting point, development teams will be able to customise and tailor Ubuntu for specific hardware—and the OEM team will be able to produce custom Remixes of Ubuntu that boot even faster,” he wrote. “I think it likely that we’ll match Moblin’s 5 [second] benchmark on similar hardware, with a device-tailored Moblin-based remix of Ubuntu.”

This emphasis on boot performance will make Ubuntu a more competitive option for hardware makers who are seeking a fast and lean distribution to preinstall on netbook devices. It will also improve the Live CD and desktop user experience. This aspect of system performance will continue to grow in relevance as Linux expands to other kinds of mobile and embedded devices in a multitude of different form factors.

Bing the In thing!

Microsoft has finally unveiled its new search engine, dubbed ‘Bing’.

Formally code-named "Kumo," the new search tool will replace Microsoft's Live Search. It will eventually roll out over the next few days as a beta in the UK, and go worldwide by 3 June, Microsoft said.

Microsoft is the latest to attempt to innovate in the search market, following the launch of Wolfram Alpha last week. The launch of Bing will likely lead pundits to ponder if Bing will be the one to knock Google off its perch, but Microsoft has said it's actually gunning for second place - the spot currently held by former acquisition target Yahoo.

Microsoft noted its latest weapon in the battle with Google wasn’t a fully featured release, but just a beta. It said the “full proposition” would continue to be developed over the next six to 12 months in London, at Microsoft’s new Search Technology Centre which employs about 60 people.

Paul Stoddart, UK search lead at Microsoft, said in a statement: “Many people believe Search today is a great tool, but as the internet continues to develop and grow then the search category requires constant innovation to allow consumers to make sense of the web.”

That said, Bing does of course offer new features above Live Search. Bing includes more relevant information on the search results page itself, and sorts them into categories. It also includes partnerships with shopping and travel sites, including recent acquisition comparison site Ciao, Microsoft said.

The main page is the very opposite of Google’s stark search engine. Bing features massive photo backdrops targeted by geography and even the latest news.

In what could be seen as a dig at leading rival Google, Stoddart said: “The major search engines were developed over a decade ago and we believe the category is still in its infancy."

"In 1997, there were only 100,000 websites compared with over 160 million worldwide today, so it’s important to challenge and evolve the search market and to make it as easy and relevant as possible for today’s consumers," he added. "There is much more that people can and should expect from their search service.”

Speaking at a conference in California, Microsoft's chief executive Steve Ballmer said: "We want to do better."

Ballmer went on to explain why the odd name Bing was chosen. "The name is short, it's easy to say, it works globally."

A disc that can store 500 gigabytes (GB) of data

A disc that can store 500 gigabytes (GB) of data, equivalent to 100 DVDs, has been unveiled by General Electric.

The micro-holographic disc, which is the same size as existing DVD discs, is aimed at the archive industry.

But the company believes it can eventually be used in the consumer market place and home players.

Blu-ray discs, which are used to store high definition movies and games, can currently hold between 25GB and 50GB.

Micro-holographic discs can store more data than DVDs or Blu-ray because they store information on the disc in three dimensions, rather than just pits on the surface of the disc.

The challenge for this area of technology has been to increase the reflectivity of the holograms that are stored on the discs so that players can be used to both read and write to the discs.

Brian Lawrence, who leads GE's Holographic Storage said on the GE Research blog: "Very recently, the team at GE has made dramatic improvements in the materials enabling significant increases in the amount of light that can be reflected by the holograms."

More capacity

The higher reflectivity that can be achieved, the more capacity for the disc. While the technology is still in the laboratory stage, GE believes it will take off because players can be built which are backwards compatible with existing DVD and Blu-ray technologies.

In a statement the firm said: "The hardware and formats are so similar to current optical storage technology that the micro-holographic players will enable consumers to play back their CDs, DVDs and Blu-ray discs."

''GE's breakthrough is a huge step toward bringing our next generation holographic storage technology to the everyday consumer,'' said Mr Lawrence in a statement.

He added: "The day when you can store your entire high definition movie collection on one disc and support high resolution formats like 3D television is closer than you think.''

Micro-holographic technology has been one of the leading areas of research for storage experts for decades. Discs are seen as a reliable and effective form of storage and are both consumer and retail friendly.

However, General Electric will need to work with hardware manufacturers if it is to bring the technology to the consumer market.

The relatively modest adoption of Blu-ray discs sales globally might be an issue with some companies who believe digital distribution and cloud computing is the long-term answer to content delivery and storage.

"This is truly a breakthrough in the development of the materials that are so critical to ultimately bringing holographic storage to the everyday consumer," said Mr Lawrence.
