Side hustles from home: Swagbucks!

If you've been around for a while, you probably remember seeing lots of Swagbucks posts. I have recently become reacquainted with the site and have started using it more as a side hustle from home type of job.

So how do I use Swagbucks as a side hustle? Since I'm a stay at home parent, I use it for various things. I can earn SB by watching videos, doing offers, even grocery shopping and purchasing specific items and uploading my receipts for SB via Magic Receipts. My brother talked me into doing SB live, where 5x a week, Hal from Swagbucks hosts a quick trivia game via the app where you can earn SB for answering questions correctly. That takes about 10 minutes or so.

There are some good offers for playing games where you can earn some good SB, so if you're unemployed or bored, or even just want to earn some cash in your spare time, definitely check out Swagbucks as your new side hustle or rediscover it if you haven't been on the site for a while like me.

Ibotta vs Fetch: Which is better? Which is worth your time?

I have had Fetch installed about 2 years and Ibotta for longer, though I hadn't done much with it until probably the past year. I like to try out apps to see how they work and if they will work out for me. Which is better, Ibotta or Fetch? And which money saving app is worth your time?

Here goes...

Deal variety: Ibotta wins hands down. There are literally thousands of offers I could do at any multitude of stores. To redeem via Ibotta, though, it has to be a store that they are affiliated with, which can mean a mom and pop grocery store is not on the their list. Fetch does have brand partners, but far less than Ibotta (though theirs are fairly steady partners, like Unilever, for example).

Money for "any" item: Ibotta wins here, too. The stores it supports will have various offers (usually 10 cents for me) for any milk, any bananas, any dog food, etc. Sometimes these are offers I use and often not. However, if you get an offer for .10 off any canned cat food, you're probably going to grab one and buy it since some money off is better than none.

Frees: Oh, who doesn't love a good freebie? I love freebies, of course, and I like to try new and exciting products. Ibotta tends to offer more free after rebate offers (depending upon store; for me, Walmart has had the most available in the past year), though Fetch has had some pretty spectacular deals that were not free, but also let you get more than one. For instance, Fetch recently had an offer on Klondike Cones. It was limit 5 and they would have been free had my store carried them. Lots of lucky shoppers stocked up their freezers on those. Last summer, I got some Popsicle Twists that were free and I was able to hide some in the downstairs freezer away from the kids. Right now, Fetch has an offer for free Viennetta and I'm hoping to find it before the offer disappears. I would call this a draw, perhaps Ibotta leading just a bit because of the frequency of free offers (though lots of times, too, my store doesn't carry the products.)

What Fetch has that Ibotta doesn't: Fetch gives you the ability to scan any grocery receipt and get some points. I'm not saying that the points are great, but it is at least something for the effort. Scanning takes two seconds of your life and the points eventually add up. Ibotta does not accept receipts unless they are tied to an offer.

What Ibotta has that Fetch doesn't: PayPal. Honestly, this is a huge negative for Fetch because though you can claim gift cards (starting at 3,000 points = $3.00), I like to reclaim my offers in cold, hard cash. I mentioned before about Shopkicks and that one also does not offer PayPal, but I redeem for Target for my college kid anyway. I really like couponing apps to offer you the ability to literally put that money back into your pocket.

Payment threshold: Fetch offers some rewards (Amazon, Target, Dunkin, et al.) starting at 3,000 points or $3. This is a low threshold and not having to save up points forever is nice. One caveat is that for Fetch you will need to wait a day to redeem if you just put in a receipt and reached the threshold. But if you had enough points in there already, you do not need to wait. This is a security feature. With Ibotta, you have to reach $20 to cash out. You also need to link to your PayPal account to receive cash. Depending on how often you are redeeming deals, it could take a bit of time. Or if you're a serious shopper, not as much time as you'd think, especially if you are able to snag free items that you get all of your money back on.

So which is better? I honestly like Ibotta better than Fetch. I earn more back on Ibotta, but last year got about $50 back in gift cards from Fetch. Both apps are worth doing, especially if you recognize that Fetch will earn at a slower rate (unless you find a great free item you can buy and redeem for multiple times).

Lately, I have been trying out a lot of apps to save/recover money. I am an avid Shopkicker, Ibotta-er, plus a few more. I have many money saving apps and they all earn at different rates...depending upon offers and other factors. My money saving apps are like eggs in a basket to me. Every one of them earning money on their own time until the magical day when I reach payout.

One of my many "eggs" is Klipem.com where I klip offers that are of interest. Recently, I have been klipping a lot of Coke offers and getting money back for buying pop. Nice. An offer I submitted this week was for $4.50 back on buying five 2 liter bottles of Coke. A very sweet deal considering these were on sale for $1 at the local store. If I don't like the product or wouldn't be interested, I just hit the skip button.

Current offers for me for range from items like chips, candy, or pop that you need to buy, sometimes at specific stores, but most of the offers for me aren't store specific. There are some Easter candy offers out right now, so definitely check it out. Check daily since offers change often.

How to use Klipem.com

Go to Klipem.com via your phone browser, click see today's offers ,and then work your way through the screens. You will eventually log in and need to put your credentials in (or sign up). Then it will add it to your list and email you redemption instructions. Ready to redeem? Just navigate back to Klipem.com and click the Redeem My Offers button and go from there. Click the square in front of the offer and then redeem. You'll be prompted to upload a file, but if you click that, you can use your phone's camera and take the photo. After that, hit submit and wait for your money. Sometimes it's faster, sometimes slower, but for me it has been about a week to get money back.

Caveat: Get a PayPal account to receive payments. If you don't have one, no sweat! They are easy to sign up for and if you do not yet have one, drop me a comment. There's an offer out at the time of the writing of this post that may interest you. I have gotten back nearly $25 in the past few months.

Shopkick: College students can earn money easily!

Recently, I sent my first child off to college. One of the things that we went over were ways to save money since she would be relying on her summer job money for things she would need, instead of mom and dad's credit card. I introduced my college student to Shopkick!

One of my favorite way to use Shopkick is scanning products in the store. This is their way of introducing you to a product and the more you have it in your hands to scan, perhaps the more likely you are to buy it. We did a lot of college dorm shopping, and if she was going to Walmart or Target with me, you bet she was going to be scanning products with Shopkick. Over the course of a month, we were able to bank her up about $50 in Starbucks gift cards that we redeemed our kicks for. Trust me, my college student will appreciate having the ability to buy herself a pink drinks throughout the semester. We were able to scan and buy pencils, post-it notes (the .97 ones were free after kicks, basically, since you got 250 kicks back = $1 in value) and the scotch tape (also, single ones were under $1 and were also valued at 250 kicks). I even found a few 8 packs of pencils for .48 that made them close to free after kicks with the 100 kicks that was awarded.

So now, if she is out and about, she is looking for things to scan and earn kicks so that she can help fund her Starbucks habit. My son is old enough for the app now and wants to do it too so that he can get things that he wants. He asked me to take him Shopkicking... to which his sister told him, "No. That's a me and mommy thing!"

You also earn kicks from buying certain products and submitting your receipt, plus occasional videos. You can link your card and get Kicks at specific stores as well for purchases and an awesome way to get Kicks is when there are walk-ins available.
