Salads can be great as a meal or as a side to a meal. These old fashion salad recipes include recipes for salads using Veggies, Tuna, and Fruit. There is bound to be one you and your family will love! Let's start out with the Tangy Vegetable Salad which is one of my favorites. Since I am a gal who loves her vegetables, this has been one of my favorite salads for many years. I think one of the reasons I love vegetables so much is because I was raised in the country where we grew most of our vegetables. I loved helping plant the seeds, watching the plants grow, and waiting with great anticipation to enjoying the vegetables when they were ready. I also loved helping my mother and grandmother can the vegetables then enjoying them on cold snowy days in the wintertime. I believe my love of vegetables was planted early and I know it runs deep. Now that I am a diabetic, I have changed the sugar in this recipe to Splenda granulated. It is still just as good. However, I am printing my original version here for you. Personally, I do not like tuna but my family does. I like this Veggie Tuna Salad recipe because it gets them to eat their vegetables, too! The Pretty Peach Salad makes a great addition to a buffet table or to a salad bar.
TANGY VEGETABLE SALAD
1 can baby peas
1 can Shoe Peg corn
1 can French-cut green beans
1/2 cup chopped celery
1 chopped onion
1 bell pepper, chopped
1/4 cup oil
1/4 cup vinegar
1/4 cup sugar
Drain all the canned vegetables then mix all the ingredients together in a bowl with a lid. Place lid on bowl and refrigerate several hours or overnight.
This makes a great 'make ahead' dish for busy cooks.
VEGGIE TUNA SALAD
1 can (6.5-oz) tuna, drained
1 cup shredded carrots
1 cup diced celery
1/4 cup minced onion
1 cup mayonnaise
1 can (4-oz) shoestring potatoes
In a large bowl use a fork to flake the tuna. Add the carrots, celery, onion, and mayonnaise; toss until the tuna is coated thoroughly with mayonnaise. Place in a bowl with a lid, cover, and refrigerate. Just before serving time, remove from the refrigerator and fold in the potatoes.
Serves 4 to 6
PRETTY PEACH SALAD
4 fresh or canned (drained) peach halves
2/3 cup cottage cheese
2 tbsp toasted slivered almonds
2 tbsp drained and chopped maraschino cherries
4 tbsp flaked coconut
crisp salad greens for lining plate
In a medium bowl, mix the cottage cheese, almonds, and maraschino cherries until combined. Arrange the peach halves, centers up, on a salad greens lined plate. Divide the cottage cheese mixture evenly and fill the centers of the pears. Sprinkle the coconut over the top.
NOTE: If using fresh peaches, dip in lemon juice or sprinkle with fruit fresh to keep them from turning dark.
Also, this same recipe works great using pears instead of peaches.
Enjoy!

Photo: 3.bp.blogspot.com

Kefir is a fermented type of milk that is similar to the consistency of grocery store yogurt drinks. I often refer to it as a delicious drinkable yogurt beverage. They have lots of healthy flora and probiotics that have numerous health benefits.
Kefir is great in smoothies, poured over cereal or used in place of cream for deserts, coffee and tea.
The kefir "grains" are live active cultures consisting of yeast and bacteria and are called grains mainly because of their appearance. Kefir grains can be bought online or at some health food stores
So here is a delicious recipe that you can make at home.
Ingredients:
1 tbsp kefir grains
1 quart whole or 2% milk
Procedure:
1. Add the kefir grains and milk in a glass jar and fill it up to the top.
2. Cover with a clean cloth and elastic band and then set it aside in your cupboard or your kitchen counter.
3. Wait 1 to 2 days; stirring periodically with a plastic spoon (this is important because metal damages the cultures).
4. When thick, strain out the kefir grains with a plastic strainer (do your best to keep the grains intact), pour back into a clean jar and place in the fridge or repeat the process again. You can use these same grains because they will continue to remain active.
How to make coconut kefir
Coconut kefir is also a very tasty alternative. Unlike kefir made from cows' milk, coconut milk kefir doesn't have a strong fermented or sour flavor. It is nice and tangy with the naturally sweet taste of coconuts.
The texture is rich and smooth and is also slightly thinner in consistency than yogurt. Both the flavor and texture of fresh homemade kefir is in my opinion a lot better than any store-bought coconut milk kefir.
Use the same recipe as described above but change the ingredients so that instead of using one quart of milk, use two cans of coconut milk.
Also, make sure to re-hydrate your kefir grains in milk for 5 to 7 days at room temperature before making coconut kefir.
If the kefir grains are dehydrated, as they are from most online sources, you must make sure to first re-hydrate them in cows' milk.
Combine the grains with 1 cup of cows' milk and set out at room temperature in a loosely covered glass container for 5 to 7 days. Then strain the grains out each day and place them in a fresh cup of milk.
When the batches of milk take and smell slightly fermented and are thick, your grains are ready.

Jai Kai is an Ayurvedic Consultant, Wellness Coach,Blogger for Planetwell.com - an ayurvedic diet. Photo: russianseason.net

Russian soup is the main staple in the diet of people every day. It's not unlike any other culture in the world. It always has been such an important part of daily meals and the variety of different types to choose from is really extraordinary.

There are many categories of Russian soup that are hot and cold.

Cabbage based soups such as the shchi
Mushroom, milk and meat noodle soups
Vegetable and water based stews
Soups that are chilled such as tyurya, kvass, botvinya, and okroshka
Vegetable and grain type soups
Ukha fish soup as well as many other kinds that include different types of fish

Hot Russian soup

One of the principle hot soups that are usually served for the first course in most Russian meals for more than 1000 years is cabbage or Shchi soup. This is one of the soups that is not exclusive to any class of people. It doesn't matter if someone is rich or poor; Shchi is a tradition and choice of mostly all Russian people. It is usually eaten at all times of the year. In addition, rye bread is often eaten along with almost any kind of soup that is served.

Other soups served hot are:

Rassolnik

This is a soup served hot that has a sour and salty cucumber base. Interestingly, this isn't an old traditional recipe. It was made in the 19th century. The name originates from rassol, which in Russian means pickle water. It can be served either vegetarian style, but quite often beef, kidneys or veal are added to the pickle base along with potatoes, vegetables and barley to balance the sour taste.

Solyanka

This is a thicker soup that adds cabbage, smetana, rassolink, spices and other vegetables like lemons, tomatoes, capers, olives, pickled and salted mushrooms to produce a very salty and sour soup base.

Cold Russian soup

One of the popular types that are eaten cold with sour milk or kvass is Okroshka. The principle ingredients with both of these soup types are vegetables combined with cold meats or fish that have been boiled.

Vegetables that are added to this type of soup can make it spicy or neutral. For a spicy flair, you can add dill grains, green onion, celery, chervil, parsley and tarragon. For the more neutral variety add potatoes, carrots, rutabagas, turnips and fresh cucumber.

As far as the sour milk that is included in some of these cold soups, it is natural sour milk that has been well shaken and combined with seed oil, pure water as well as ground garlic. You can often replace the sour milk and use kefir instead, but many cold soup purists say that it changes the taste of the traditional okroshka.

To conclude, if you want to really experience the country's cuisine, you need to eat the many varieties of Russian soup that are available with every meal. You can be rest assured that almost every meal that you eat will include some form of soup. It's the way of traditional cuisine and is very good for you to boot.
If you are looking for a good homemade dressing for your favorite green salad, try this Homemade Celery Seed one.
GINGER NOODLE SALAD
4 oz dry whole-wheat spaghetti or linguine
Cook pasta according to the package directions. Toss with the dressing below:
NOODLE DRESSING:
1 tbsp minced ginger
3 tbsp Splenda granular
1 tbsp catsup
1/4 cup lite soy sauce
1/4 tsp Chinese chile paste*
1 tbsp water
2 tbsp lime juice
1 tsp canola oil
2 cups mixed salad greens
4 lime wedges for garnish, if desired
In a medium saucepan combine the ginger, Splenda, catsup, soy sauce, chili paste, and water. Bring to a simmer over medium-low heat and simmer for 1 minute. Remove from the heat then add the canola oil and lime juice. Using a wire whisk, blend well.
Add the cooked and drained noodles to the dressing and stir in well to coat.
To serve, divide the salad greens evenly among 4 salad plates. Top with the noodles. Garnish each with a lime wedge, if desired.
*If you don't have the Chinese chili paste, substitute a small amount of crushed red pepper to taste.
BROCCOLI RAISIN SALAD
1 bunch fresh broccoli, broken into florets
1/2 cup golden raisins (omit if necessary)
1 small red onion, chopped
1/2 cup fat-free mayonnaise (not salad dressing-too sweet)
1 tbsp vinegar
2 tsp Splenda granular
3 strips cooked bacon, broken into bite-sized pieces
2 tbsp toasted sunflower seeds
Combine the broccoli florets, raisins-if using, and onion in a large bowl.
In a small bowl combine the mayonnaise, vinegar, and Splenda until well blended. Pour the dressing over the broccoli, toss to coat, and refrigerate until serving time. Before serving, toss gently and sprinkle with the bacon pieces and sunflower seeds.
HOMEMADE CELERY SEED DRESSING
1 garlic clove
1 tsp salt
2 tbsp lemon juice
1/3 cup olive or canola oil
1/2 tsp celery seed
3/4 tsp dry mustard
1/2 tsp paprika
1/4 tsp Splenda Granulated
1/4 tsp black pepper
1 small jar with a lid. A jelly jar works well.
In a jar mash the garlic clove with the salt. Add the lemon juice, oil, celery seed, mustard, paprika, Splenda, and black pepper. Place lid on jar and shake well to blend.
Refrigerate.
Shake well before using on your favorite salad.
Yield: 1/2 cup
Enjoy!
The Paleo Diet, also called the paleolithic or caveman diet, consists of recipes that are natural such as meat, fish, fruit, vegetables, and nuts. These were the foods that sustained people for years and kept us healthy, physically fit and full of energy; people were strong and thriving. But, something happened that caused our eating habits to change.
Agriculture was introduced to your lifestyle. With the introduction of agriculture, came the introduction of sugar laden, highly processed foods such as wheat flour and high fructose corn syrup. The fast, convenient foods that we are so used to eating, are toxic for our bodies and cause many diseases such as cancer, diabetes, auto immune diseases and more.
Paleo Diet recipes only include food combinations that are natural, tasty and without toxins including the following:
Have you heard about the health benefits of flax, but don't know how to add it to your diet? Do you love bread but not the spike your blood sugar takes from breads made of flour? Tired of buying large loaves of bread when you want it to be fresh all the time? If you've answered yes to any of these questions, this recipe is for you! It's really too good to be true. I have to admit, I saw a recipe similar to this online and wondered:
1. Could I make it really healthy? and
2. Would it taste any good?
This is one you just have to try to believe. Don't let the ingredients scare you off. This is bread and it's quick, easy, cheap, and full of important nutrition. This recipe substitutes flaxseed meal for flour. Flaxseed is rich in those elusive omega-3 fatty acids which fight inflammation in your body. It's high in most of the B vitamins, magnesium, and manganese, fiber, and antioxidants. This bread will not spike your blood sugar and will fill you up. Best of all, this bread tastes great! I just made this, and topped it with a bit of almond butter - delicious!
FLOURLESS MUG BREAD
¼ cup ground flaxseed meal
½ teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 large egg
1 tablespoon unsweetened applesauce
Put the flaxseed meal, baking powder, and cinnamon into a microwave-safe mug. Stir together until well mixed. Add the egg and applesauce. Mix until smooth. Microwave 2 minutes. Allow bread to cool slightly and remove from the mug.
NUTRITION PER SERVING (1 serving)
calories = 226
saturated fat = 1.6 g
sodium = 83 mg
fiber = 9.5 g
protein = 12.4 g
VERSATILITY
You can substitute the egg with egg substitute.
Add mashed banana, zucchini, oats, dried fruits, nuts, cocoa powder.
Try slicing and toasting the bread.
COST
I actually had all these ingredients in my kitchen, but I estimate this recipe would cost about 50 cents per serving.
The elegant, sumptuous vanilla-infused custard with asweet caramel top layer is absolutely an ultimate dessert to finish off a meal. The coconut version of the flan, as telecasted on a food show of my HD television connected to Dish TV Offers tempted me to make the original classic Mexican dessert that has been passed on from generations to the family. This simple creamy custard dessert serves as a finest portion of a meal and is a favorite among those who has a sweet tooth. Flan is a slow cooked dish and is normally made with whole eggs, cream or milk with a caramel coating and appropriated flavorings that includes vanilla, almonds, pistachio, lemon, pumpkin and various other fruits. The various flavors relate to the creation of different types of flans like Asparagus Flan, Sweet Potato Flan, Coffee Flan, Chocolate Flan, Cheese Flan and Sweet Corn Flan and other fruit flavored ones.

A coffee flan is a great variation of the Spanish flan and a cheese flan is similar to cheesecake but has a more refined texture. Mexican flan is very similar to the original Spanish flan recipe but with a hint of chocolate and vanilla. The English custard flan has a unique crust but is otherwise similar to the Spanish style flan. Flan is very simple dessert and easy to make and there is nothing like devouring a tasty, delicious flan that indulges you into a sweet world.

Though it is a popular dessert in Spain and Mexico, where it is a staple dessert and is famous in the kitchens of the rich and the poor, its origin can be traced to the ancient Rome. It's believed that, in Rome, the abundant and surplus food commodities like eggs and with the infusion of Greek's knowledge of the art of cooking led to the creation of a custardy concoction known as flan. Originally a savory dish like an eel flan, it was later concocted into a very nice sweet flan with honey flavor. Unlike in Rome where the citrus and almond flavor became a hit, in Spain it became sweet custard generally made with caramelized sugar. With the discovery of Central and South America, the richness of the flan was introduced to the people by Christopher Columbus who brought the delicious dessert to these lands which underwent various twists in its various custardy forms. In the European region, it was famous as a crusty dessert, with their love for pastry crusts. This one makes use of a pastry shell with an open top filled with custard and often mixed with nuts or fruit. This simple economic dessert appeals to all classes and masses without any distinction.

The key success to any recipe is to follow exact and precise measurements and paying attention to all the details as in the case of flan. Read on below for the recipe of this delectable treat. All you need to make a delicious flan is a tart mould or a tart pan or molds fitted with a lid that clips on securely. First pre-heat your oven to 325 degree and then start to assemble the ingredients. Prepare the caramel by adding one cup of sugar into the pan and stir until the sugar turns brown into caramel. Add this to your baking tart pan or mould. For the custard blend six large eggs and 4-ounce can sweeten condensed milk and 2 13-ounce cans evaporated milk, slowly incorporating half-a-cup of sugar and then vanilla into a smooth mixture. Transfer the custard to the mould, place it in a baking dish filled with water and bake for 45 minutes. Enjoy your custardy caramel dessert!
Sourdough bread is different from normal bread. It is more nutritious and since the sourdough starter can reduce down the gluten, some people who are glucose intolerant can eat sourdough bread made from wheat flour. Another big advantage of making sourdough bread machine recipes is that it can be stored for a long period of time. Here is a simple sourdough bread machine recipe that you can prepare from scratch and enjoy at home.
What you will need:
- Bread machine flour or wheat flour - 3 ½ cups
- Granulated sugar - 2 tablespoons
- Active bread machine yeast - 2 ¼ teaspoons
- Salt - 2 teaspoons (this regulates the rising of the bread)
- Warm fresh milk - ¾ cups
- Butter (softened) - 1 ½ tablespoons
- Homemade sourdough starter - 1 cup (recipe given below)
To prepare:
- Clean out your bread machine and check the settings. Mark the settings on basic bread cycle and the type of crust you like for your bread.
- In the clean bread pan, mix 1 cup of the flour, sugar, salt and yeast (do not use the warming cycle).
- While the cycle is still running, slowly add the milk and softened butter.
- While the machine is still running, add the sourdough starter.
- Now add the rest of the flour (do not mix) and close the lid of the bread pan, then let the machine run for its full cycle.
- Once the bread is done, let it cool on a wire rack before serving.
Sourdough starter: The sourdough starter needs to be at least a week old before use. Since it does not go bad, it can be stored in the fridge. Given below is a simple recipe for sourdough starter to make at home.
What you will need:
- All-purpose flour - 2 cups
- Sugar - 2 teaspoons
- Dry active yeast - 1 packet
- Warm water - 1 cup (115F)
Preparation:
- Mix the yeast with warm water and let it rest for some time until you get a frothy liquid.
- You will need a deep glass jar to keep the mix in as the starter rises with time.
- In the jar, mix the flour and sugar and whisk in the yeast.
- Cover the jar with a cheesecloth or a cling sheet and let it ferment at least overnight.
- Stir the starter at least 3 times daily and you will know it is ready to use when the bubbling stops.
- You can keep the starter in the fridge when it starts fermenting.
- Before using the starter, measure out one cup and let it come to room temperature before using.
- Sourdough bread's sourness will depend on the days of fermentation and the temperature of the starter.
This bread can be served with soups, salads and gravy dishes.

Honey mustard

Steak sauce

Thousand Island dressing

Cheese sauce

Gravy

Tomato or marinara sauce

Alfredo sauce

Serve with side dishes such as:

Steamed vegetables

Macaroni and cheese

French fries

Sweet potato fries

Tater tots

Mashed potatoes

Pasta salad

Raw vegetables (carrots, cucumbers, broccoli, etc.)

Potato salad

Healthy Substitutions
Make your chicken tenders a little bit better for you with these healthier substitutions:

Whole wheat flour instead of white flour

3 egg whites instead of 2 whole eggs

1/2 cup egg substitute instead of eggs

Ground oats instead of breadcrumbs

Extra virgin olive oil instead of vegetable oil

Bake at 400 degrees for 15 minutes, instead of frying

Recipe Variations
Try out these yummy variations to give your chicken tenders a little extra kick!

Mix in 1/2 cup shredded cheese with the breadcrumbs. Cheddar and parmesan work well. This will give the chicken tenders added flavor and an extra crunchy texture.

Bread the chicken tenders with crushed crackers instead of breadcrumbs. Plain crackers, such as saltines, work best.

Experiment with different seasonings, other than Italian seasoning. Cayenne pepper will make the chicken tenders spicy, poultry seasoning will give them a more subtle taste.

Cut the chicken into little nuggets instead of strips. This will make it easier for little kids to eat them.

Bread and fry other meats or vegetables in the same way. Sturdy vegetables like eggplant work well.

Giving a different twist to the traditional combination of sausages and bread, here is a mouth-watering Italian sausage bread recipe that you can prepare at home. This bread recipe uses prepared pizza dough, but if you have more time on your hands you can prepare the bread dough as well.
On your shopping list, you will need:
One regular pizza dough
1/2 kg of Italian sausages
1 teaspoon, or about 5 grams, of red chili flakes
5 grams of diced parsley leaves
5 grams of diced thyme leaves
150 grams of chopped onions (1 cup)
10 grams of yellow cornmeal
5 grams of chopped garlic
350 grams of grated mozzarella cheese
1 normal egg
2 tablespoons of water
5 ml of olive oil
Salt to taste
Prepare your oven before cooking the stuffing:
Preheat the oven to 180°C.
Take an 8x12 inch baking pan and bread sheet, and dust half of the cornmeal inside it.
To prepare the stuffing:
In a non-stick pan, heat the olive oil on medium heat (you could use regular refined oil, but Italian and olive oil sort of go together).
Put the sausages in the pan and let them cook for some time so that they are cooked from the inside and brown on the top. Keep turning in between to let them cook evenly.
Add the onions and let them cook for a few minutes until they are soft and translucent.
Add chopped garlic and let it cook for a few minutes.
Add the chopped thyme and parsley leaves to the mix and let them cook for a minute.
Add some salt and mix well so that the sausages are coated with herbs.
Add the red chili flakes, mix and take the mix off the heat.
Let the mix cool before using.
For the bread loaf:
Thaw the pizza dough.
Sprinkle the remaining cornmeal on a flat surface and knead the dough over it to a 10x14 inch rectangle.
Mix the egg with water.
Use this mix to brush the sides of the dough (one inch on each side).
Sprinkle half of the mozzarella cheese on the prepared dough.
Spread the sausage and herb mix on the cheese and sprinkle the rest of the cheese over it.
Roll the dough over the mix in a jelly roll style and seal the edges well.
Brush some of the egg white on top.
Bake in the preheated oven for about 40 minutes until the top crust is glossy golden brown.
Cool on a wire rack and cut in slices to serve.
You can serve this bread with butter, salsa and even as a side dish with gravy.
Can you Make Your Own Soda, and save money at the same time? Absolutely! Did you know that it's really simple to make your own beverages at home? Just like with anything new there will be a slight learning curve as you learn which flavor combinations work best or how much of a particular ingredient you will need. Have fun with it, make healthier drinks, make fun flavors, and cut back on plastic and aluminum usage a little in the process. Are you ready?
Why Make Your Own Soda?
As you may already know brand name sodas are packed with calories and tons of high fructose corn syrup which is kind of unhealthy for you. In addition here are some other great reasons to Make Your Own Soda:
- Less usage of plastic bottles and aluminum cans
- Complete control over ingredients
- Many different flavor combinations
- You can use "Real" fruit instead of artificial flavors
- Ability to control the taste
- And much more
Last but certainly not least it's just downright fun to make your own soda creations. Drinking the same old boring name brands gets old. Do you remember when the gourmet soda company Jones Soda came out with a flavor called "Turkey & Gravy'? Yes now you can create the next crazy flavor
It Can't Be That Easy...Right?
When it comes to soda there are undoubtedly many flavors on the market, If you have ever watched one of those shows about "how things are made" and caught the one about the soda factory you will probably believe that only major corporations can churn out great tasting soda. Even though there are literally hundreds of different flavors of soda the truth is that most sodas share the same core parts of carbonation, flavor and sweetness. That's it really. Of course how great your soda will taste will depend on what method you use, and a few other factors such as how fizzy (carbonated) you like your water and how flavorful you like your soda.
Gettin "Fizzy" with it!
In order to have a great tasting soda you will need carbonation. To keep it simple there are two ways to achieve carbonation that won't break the bank. The first option is to simply buy a bottle of seltzer water from your local grocery store and mix it with your chosen ingredients. It can't get any simpler than that. With that said this method can add up over time. If you plan on making soda more consistently you may be better off utilizing a machine that can carbonate your plain tap water instead. You can also carbonate with dry ice, but we don't recommend this method as it can be very dangerous if not done properly.
Here Comes The Brand New "Flavor" In Your Root Beer
Ok so now that you have your carbonation method it's time to start thinking about different ways to flavor your carbonated water. First start with a simple syrup mixture consisting of one part water and one part sugar. You can then add at least two parts of your flavoring or more depending on your desired taste. Heat this combo up until it starts to boil then turn the heat off. Let this sit for about 30 minutes then transfer to another container and stick it in your refrigerator. As far as the ratio of carbonated water to flavoring you will have to decide by taste but 2-3 ounces of syrup to 12 ounces of carbonated water is a good place to start. The key here is to experiment with different flavor combinations and see what you can come up with. Make it fun, and who knows maybe you will come up with the next great soda flavor.
If you would prefer to have someone else be the mixologist then you can try using a premade flavor instead. This will shorten the learning curve and you can certainly still experiment and come up with many different recipes.
Just to give you an idea of what you can do with premade flavors here are a couple of recipes that you can create using SodaStream SodaMix flavors to get you going in the right direction:
Shirley Temple
8 oz. SodaStream Ginger Ale
1 1/2 oz. Grenadine or maraschino cherry juice
Maraschino cherries
Pour Grenadine or cherry juice over ice. Add Ginger Ale and serve with a cherry on top!
Berry Dream
4 oz. SodaStream Cranberry-Raspberry
2 oz. Light cream
1/4 cup Strawberries, raspberries or blueberries in syrup
1 cup ice
In a blender, puree ice, cream and berries until smooth and creamy
Pour into a cup and stir in soda
Extra special treat: Serve in a martini glass, garnished with a sprig of mint and fresh berries.
This is just the tip of the iceberg! You can make many more tasty drink recipes and the possibilities are truly endless. Whether you make your own flavors or opt for premade flavors learning to Make Your Own Soda will be fun, good for the environment, and very yummy for your tummy. Cheers!

Sometimes you will find it necessary, when you are cooking or baking, to substitute one ingredient for another. These baking substitutes can be very useful and can help save your recipe if you are lacking an ingredient, or if you want to substitute an ingredient for taste or health purposes. Before you use any baking substitutes, like the ones described below, test the taste yourself and make sure it will be appropriate in your recipe. These substitutes may change the taste or the texture of the baking, so you should use them with care. The following baking substitutes are suitable for your baking recipes, and you can try them out when you are baking your next cake, bread or dessert.

If you are told to use an envelope of yeast, you can substitute this for one cube of fresh yeast. One tablespoon of corn starch may be exchanged for two tablespoons of flour this is used for thickening, and the extra bulk of the flour helps to carry out corn starchs thickening role. If you dont have any self raising flour, use one cup or all-purpose flour and add one teaspoon of baking powder to give the rising effect. Add a pinch of salt as well. If you need to use buttermilk or sour milk, use regular milk with a tablespoon of lemon juice or vinegar. If you are stuck without baking chocolate, use three tablespoons of cocoa along with one tablespoon of oil or some melted shortening. To make your own almond paste, use one cup of sliced almonds blended with a tablespoon of granulated sugar toast the almonds first for a better taste. Bread crumbs could be replaced by crushed cracker crumbs, or crushed cornflakes, or even ground oats. For brewed coffee substitute instant espresso power dissolved in hot water (dont use much hot water, make a thick paste.) For clotted cream you can use mascarpone cheese and for heavy whipping cream use a smaller quantity of whipping cream plus buttermilk or yogurt. If you havent got vanilla extract you can use other extracts such as lemon, orange or almond. For ghee, try clarified butter and for ginger root you can try ground dried ginger plus lemon juice. Of course, you can also substitute fresh herbs and fresh peel for dried herbs and peel. This may make the recipe taste different, so be aware of this before you make the substitution.
The importance of choosing the right food for you
Doing research about the food that you are going to buy is one step of making sure that you are only buying the food that is right for you. With research and knowledge, you can see the substances that make up that food that you are going to buy.
Food such as red meat which is high in saturated fat and cholesterol could cause heart diseases and high blood pressure while dairy products can lead to weight gain, stomach cramps, diarrhea, and vomiting especially when you are lactose intolerant. Take note that you should not avoid them as they have some positive effect as well.
Eating leafy green vegetable and high fiber food can help cleanse your digestive system. Living a healthy life means eating the right food and avoiding the food that is not good for you. Although many people ignore these cases and eat food that are high in fats and cholesterol as they please, the consequence may come up sooner or later without them noticing.
So before going to a market or grocery, we should segregate the food that we are going to buy and not buy. Since you already did some research about the food that you listed, you would likely avoid the food that is not good for you, thus making you chose the right food for you.
Also when you are on a diet such as HCG, the most important thing that you need to do is follow a strict HCG diet plan which involves eating foods that are low in calories but with high nutrient values.
Eating the right food will not only make you feel healthier, but it can also help you lose weight as most healthy foods are usually low in calorie and fats but high in fiber and rich in antioxidant.
So if you are very serious to walk to a path of a healthy lifestyle, choose the right food and combining it with an exercise will be a great combo. With this method, you will significantly see and feel the improvement of your health in no time.
There are various amazing advantages in motivating your kids to be involved in the preparing of family meals. Kids are more likely to accept and take pleasure in the food when they have been included in the planning, as they can appreciate the actual procedure and what ingredients go into the meal and also how the food is created. It can give the children a very good feeling of excitement and they also will see the entire process through from beginning to end. Cooking with children will mean that children are going to discover more about a variety of foods, textures, colorings, tastes, nutrients in addition to nutritious methods for cooking. In addition, its entertaining!

Employ these very simple actions to get your children in the kitchen:

1.Ask them to assist you make one of their most favorite family meals. Just how could they refuse that!
2.Make something for someone else i.e. cookies for school friends or a dinner for their grandparents. Your children should have a great sensation of accomplishment once its done plus they are going to experience the happiness of sharing and doing something wonderful for other people.
3.Persuade the children to taste and smell completely different ingredients as you go along. You will certainly be amazed at the foods they find delicious and yukky.
4.Have them involved in the complete process from buying the ingredients with you, to weighing up, stirring and mixing, setting tables, serving the end product and naturally cleaning up. Youngsters will soon realize there is a lot more to a family meal than only eating it!
5.Provide them with safe responsibilities to perform. Keep very dangerous tasks for instance chopping with sharp knives and dealing with the oven and stove off limits. Be sure the duties you allocate are age-specific. A young child as young as 2-3 can help you to do straight forward things along the lines of stirring a mixture or cleaning veggies in the sink. As the child ages you could start to present them harder tasks, for example, measuring out ingredients, spooning mixtures into a pan and also serving the dish.
6.As children become older, you can even get to a stage where they're going to be responsible for choosing and organizing a whole family meal on a specific night of the week (with a little help from mum needless to say). How fabulous would that be!

Culinary arts carry on growing in popularity. Today, a lot more people engage in cookery demonstrations to discover new dishes. Others attend culinary institutions to find out the basic principles of food preparation. The planet has advanced significantly since the days when individuals only learned cooking skills from their mothers. There's a wide selection of ways for you to learn this ancient art. How can you determine which of these choices satisfy your learning style?

Below are several popular methods people utilize in learning the skill of cooking. They teach individuals different levels of food preparation. Combining these items may help you learn faster and enable you to turn into a better cook.

Cookery Demonstrations

Our planet's best chefs tour different countries and give various cookery demonstrations to eager audiences. Their audience are homemakers and beginners who currently have basic kitchen skills. You can enjoy when they start to prepare easy dishes while explaining the procedure step-by-step. They will ask select members of the crowd to try making the dish alongside them if they're teaching bigger groups. Smaller groups will get to attempt making the dish alongside these chefs themselves.

What makes these demonstrations popular is that you get personal interaction with an expert and see how to make a particular dish firsthand. Additionally, they give tips and suggestions on ingredients, cooking strategies and pairing options during the session. These courses are readily available as they often come as promotional programs for several products. In case you already have a basic working familiarity with kitchen skills and want to study new recipes, it is the perfect chance for you.

Culinary Schools

People who attend culinary schools don't automatically desire to be chefs. Formal cooking institutions offer basic classes for those who are just setting out to explore the kitchen. They offer an arranged program where you will find out different skills in a given period. You will begin with knife skills and basic cooking techniques to recognizing ingredients and their flavours before moving forward to creating different dishes.

Most people choose this since they receive training from expert chefs. The combination of hands-on experience and classroom lectures lets you master the basic principles under the guidance of chef instructors. You'll also have your classmates for support. They will help you take a look at lessons and exercise your skills. Together, you'll be able to exchange ideas on dishes and learn new dishes from each others' cooking experiences. This is well suited for those who want a more structured method and those who learn faster with a support group.

Personal Chef Service

Individuals who have the resources go with personal chef service. You can actually hire chefs not only to cook for you, but to teach you how as well. You'll work with your very own chef one-on-one. The chef will offer his undivided attention and answer all your questions as you learn skills at your own pace. There aren't any structures and schedules for these sessions since you also dictate these factors. You can demand your own chef or set your very own time. You can also choose specific skills you would like to gain. Busy people and those who learn faster in hands-on sessions will benefit from this method.
Photo: rawfoodnation.org

Gazpacho originated in southern Spain. It is a cold soup and requires no cooking. Moreover, it is cholesterol free, low in calories and high in vitamin C.
The main ingredient of Gazpacho is tomato, which grows in abundance in southern Spain. But as you might imagine, being Spanish in origin, it also contains onions, garlic and olive oil. Again, these are readily available and, of course, inexpensive.
Tomatoes provide the sweetness, as well has being high in vitamin C, and paprika gives the soup a bit of spice.
The ingredients are:
25 g fresh breadcrumbs
2-3 tablespoons virgin olive oil
1/4 teaspoon paprika
225 g tomatoes
3 spring onions
small clove of garlic
1/4 of a large cucumber
1/2 red pepper
1/2 yellow pepper
Juice of a lime
450ml tomato juice
salt and freshly ground black pepper
Method: Boil 150 ml water and add to it the breadcrumbs, oil and paprika in a bowl. Remove the skins from the tomatoes by dipping them in hot water. Cut the tomatoes in half so that you can remove and discard the seeds. Then chop the flesh. Trim and dice the spring onions, and peel the garlic and cucumber. The peppers should also be diced. Keep back some of the diced vegetables to place in the middle of the soup when it is ready to be served.
Blend together until fairly smooth the mixture of breadcrumbs, cucumber, peppers, onions and garlic. Stir in the lime juice. Then add this mixture to the tomato juice and chopped tomatoes, season and chill for at least an hour.
There are different ways of making Gazpacho and this is likely to vary from region to region. I suspect this recipe is quite a modern variation on traditional ones as I have had Gazpacho in Marbella on the south coast of Spain and I am certain there was no bread in it. Nevertheless, this is a tasty, healthy and inexpensive dish with plenty of vitamin C, not only from the tomatoes but the peppers too. Red and yellow peppers contain four times as much vitamin C as oranges. Garlic is good for many things including the immune system and circulation, infections and so on.
As regards where the word Gazpacho comes from, this is more vague. I once read it was to do with "edible treasures" but apparently it comes from the pre-Roman Mozarab word caspa, which means "fragments" or "flakes", as in small pieces of bread.
Hard boiled eggs have been a staple in households around the world for decades, if not longer and for good reason. Not only are eggs a healthy food choice they are generally cheap! If you have been searching for a few good recipes for eggs, you have come to the right site. Here are few easy to make recipes.
Egg Salad Sandwiches
This is a recipe for eggs that has been as many variations at the people making it. Some swear by adding onions, herbs and even avocado's, but these are definitely not mandatory. A simple egg salad sandwich recipe would look something like the following:
2 hard boiled eggs
1 Tbsp. mayonnaise (salad dressing works as well)
1 tsp. Dijon mustard
Dash of pepper
Dash of salt
½ tsp. red wine vinegar (optional)
Finely chop the eggs, add mayonnaise, mustard, pepper, salt and red wine vinegar. Mix thoroughly and serve on your choice of bread.
Tuna Egg Salad
Other recipes for eggs often include various meat additives, including tuna.
Can tuna
4 hard boiled eggs
1 ½ tablespoon of mayonnaise
½ cup chopped celery (optional)
Pepper and salt to taste
Tuna in water is the healthier recipe for eggs but that is often a matter of personal preference. Drain oil or water, mix remaining ingredients and serve on favorite bread. (Wheat, white or multi-grain)
Deviled Eggs
12 hard boiled eggs
½ cup mayo or salad dressing
1 tsp. dry mustard (yellow mustard can also been use)
1 tsp. white vinegar
½ tsp. black pepper
Salt to taste
Peel the cooked eggs and rinse thoroughly. Slice it in half, longwise is most popular. Gently scoop out egg yolk and set aside in med mixing bowl. Mix mayonnaise, egg yolks and rest of ingredients together in bowl. You can use a hand mixer for extremely creamy filling, but hand mixing works fine as well. With a bakers bag or teaspoon refill egg white cavity with mix and garnish with paprika. Serve and enjoy the recipes and share it to your family and friends.
Conclusion
As you may have noticed, each of the recipes for it may differ slightly from the way you or grandma did it! Egg salad, tuna salad and deviled eggs are classic recipes for hard-boiled eggs that have been tweaked to personal taste about a thousand different ways. You may have eaten shrimp in your way as served in many popular restaurants. But, the Japanese have their own style of eating shrimps. They simply prepare in their own way and the actual size is a little larger than the popular available variety.

Their smaller cousins are more easily available but the larger ones are more favorable and really tastes good. The smaller varieties of shrimps are generally available as frozen foods. You could find them in regular grocery stores. One of the most popular dishes is the Trio, a common Japanese menu and it is also very popular. You can find it in most of the restaurants.

Can you imagine a seafood treat without lobster, will it be enjoying? Yes, you can start with crab cakes accompanied by buns and rolls will certainly be wonderful. But, there is nothing comparable to lobsters. It gives you a feel of happening seafood and it could be one of the favorites as dinner a platter. But there is hardly anything like the Maine lobster, which really tastes delicious. If you choose this, then it will be really the most happening seafood party for a long time to come. So, if you plan to have lobster for your lunch or dinner, then Maine is the right answer.

Well, returning to the Japanese shrimp dishes, apart from the Trio, there is another one which is mixed with spices and sauces and the shrimp is included with beef, chicken, scallions and a type of homemade Teriyaki blended secret sauce. This makes up the bulk of the main course of the menu. The smaller shrimps are more suited for salads and sandwiches and they are generally found in the cold waters. For rare occasions shrimp salads are ideal for family get-togethers. It will also help to spend your time with extended family or Thanksgiving or Christmas holidays.

Maine is said to be the most mesmerizing seafood destination of America, since it is also the lobster capital of the world. Whether you order face to face or through online, you will get that same taste of the world famous Maine lobster. Whether you plan to cook all by yourself, then you should follow some simple tips, like cooking it immediately neither it will rot. Your memories may have gone to childhood; some of the favorites were Moms apple pie and Grannys shrimp salad. Yes they were really delicious and the taste is still encapsulated in the taste buds.

Did you know it is possible to make healthy comfort food? Spaghetti has always been one of my favorite meals to prepare for dinner or lunch, and I am so excited to share with you a recipe that will satisfy your hunger for a tasty and complete meal! Organic raw vegetables and fruits add numerous vitamins and minerals into the diet, which provide lasting energy to keep you going throughout your day.
I recently discovered a kitchen tool called a spiral slicer. This manual hand turn crank device is actually quite fun to use, and once you practice a couple of times it is super easy to make raw noodles from several different types of vegetables. I purchased my spiral slicer online for around twenty dollars and have found it to be very durable throughout the past few years I've used it. My family and I have really enjoyed using this creative kitchen device. Its durability has also proven to be cost efficient. My favorite vegetables to spiral slice into raw pasta noodles are zucchini and yellow squash because they have a slightly neutral flavor that easily absorb flavors from other added ingredients, herbs, and spices when combined together. If you do not have a spiral slicer, you may use a cheese grater to create a shredded noodle that is also enjoyable to prepare.
You will need the following ingredients and items on hand to complete the preparation of this recipe.
Spiral vegetable slicer or cheese grater.
Food processor.
Two large evenly round organic zucchini or yellow squash.
Ten sun-dried tomatoes soaked for twenty minutes until soft.
Half cup organic pine nuts.
Four medium organic tomatoes.
Four organic basil leaves.
One clove organic garlic.
One tablespoon fresh chopped organic oregano.
One teaspoon sea salt.
One teaspoon organic freshly cracked black pepper.
Half teaspoon organic chili powder.
Half cup organic extra virgin olive oil.
One cup purified water.
Once you have all your ingredients, you may begin the preparation of this delicious meal. First, use the spiral slicer to make spiral pasta noodles from the zucchini or yellow squash and set aside. Next, place the remaining ingredients, except pine nuts, into your food processor. Pulse until smooth, but slightly chunky. Be sure not to over process, unless you desire a completely liquified sauce. I prefer a slightly chunky texture in my spaghetti sauces, as I find it adds to the enjoyment of all the distinct flavors in this gourmet meal. Then, place desired amount of zucchini or yellow squash noodle pasta into separate serving bowls. Now, pour the processed sauce over the servings of noodles. Finally, sprinkle the raw organic pine nuts on top of each bowl. The pine nuts add delicious flavor and make a beautiful and edible garnish. Now you can satisfy even the biggest of appetites as you enjoy devouring this tasty and healthy recipe! Making healthy dietary choices has never been this easy before, and it starts with one healthy choice! I love preparing delectable organic raw vegan meals for people, and I know you will too! Now you can create a whole new experience in your kitchen, and even enroll children in the process as well. Kids have so much fun knowing they are helping make this delicious meal the entire family will love!
1/4 cup flour
2 cups scalded milk
2 cups cooked ham cut into cubes
1 can whole kernel corn, drained
1 cup cooked diced potatoes
1/4 cup minced fresh parsley or 1 1/2 tablespoons dried parsley flakes
1 tablespoon finely chopped onion
1/4 teaspoon paprika
1 cup shredded American cheese
Melt the butter and add flour. Blend until smooth. Add scalded milk and stir until boiling. Combine other ingredients, except cheese, in baking dish. Pour the sauce over the ham mixture and top with cheese. Bake in 350 degrees F. oven for 30 minutes. Feeds 4 to 6.
CABBAGE AND GROUND BEEF DISH
As I have said repeatedly, I love these old recipes. When I was a child my dad planted 3 or 4 gardens. He loved to garden, he loved having the vegetables, and he loved giving to others. For many years he was the local township trustee. Part of his job was giving out subsidies to those who qualified. He often gave them what the county allowed then sent them home with bags of his garden produce. The one vegetable I anxiously awaited was the large cabbages. I think I like cabbage anyway you can prepare it! Almost every time I buy a head of cabbage I think about the large ones dad grew in his gardens.
1 small head of green cabbage, cut in chunks
tea kettle of boiling water
1 onion, diced
1 lb ground chuck
1/4 cup raw rice (not instant)
1 can tomato soup
1 soup can of water
Place cabbage in a large pan or heat-proof bowl and pour the boiling water over it to wilt; drain.
Brown the ground chuck with the onion, adding salt and pepper to taste. Cook until the meat is no longer pink and the onion is tender; drain well.
Mix the drained cabbage with the ground beef/onion mixture. Stir in the rice, tomato soup and soup can of water until mixed together well. Pour into a greased casserole dish.
Bake, covered, at 350 degrees for approximately 1 1/2 hours.
Enjoy!
