Two years ago, I decided to paint a view from my window. It was a colorful painting of Fall's color. I hung the painting at the hall way until I sold it to a customer last month.

So I decided to paint another one, same window, same view, even in a same season. But my feeling at the moment was changed, so did the second painting...

I was reading a Chinese novel this morning. I found a meaningful word that I cannot stop myself to share with all of you.

怯 qiè

Pronounce "qie".

First, let us take a qiuck look about this chinese word. This word is a combination with "忄" and "去". In Chinese, "忄" means heart; and "去" means delete or gone. So we can read the meaning of this word simply by itself: A incomplete heart or without a heart, which means frighten, scare, terrify, shy, cowardly or weak.

If you have two days to visit New York City, what would you do?

Well, my two days? are all about eat, play, and eat...

Day 1.

0900: (Just woke up from the lovely bed.....)What? It's alreadly 9am?!!!! I got to be hurry up.

1020: Ah~ What a great breakfast. Now I have energy to begin my first day in New York City :)

1045: OMG! So many people in the line! I better get the ferry ticket first.....

1100: $13 for a round trip to Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island? What a great deal~

1110: The line is so long.....

1150: Still in the line :(

1220: Still.....

1240: Finally.

1710: Oh~ the museum will closed at 5:45pm. But the good news is, I am free to visit the museum from now till 5:45pm.

1810: If I took the subway-Green Line 6, I could straight ahead to Canal Street Station, which is the station to Chinatown and Litte Italy.

1820: The subway is so crowded. Guess it's the peak time.
1850: Oh! There's so crowded in Chinatown! That "Noodle Village" looks great. Let's try!

1900: Can I have pan fried chive dumplings, noodle soup with handmade fishball, fish porrige, steamed crabmeat dumplings and spicy calamari. Please?

2000: Ah~ What a wonderful day with a great dinner. Now I should order some dessert to go :)

2040: The night of Chinatown is so beautiful. I can't believe I am now in USA, it seems more likely in Hong Kong.
2050: Ah.....follow to Mott Street from Chinatown, take about 5 minutes walk to north is Little Italy. I can smell the coffee now! Too bad I couldn't fill in anything more~ Maybe next time.

2130: Am I just been China and Italy? It seems like I was. Ho HO HO :))

2140: It's time to get back to hotel, I am kind of tired.

0850: AhhhHHHh.....Good Morning New York City.
0930: I really like this hotel, It serves great breakfast. And its location is very convenient. About 1 minute walk to subway station, 1 minute walk to Museum American Indian and 5 minutes walk to Wall Street Bull. Got to come back to this Double Tree Hotel in Stone Street, NYC next time.

0940: This is Charging Bull huh?! Amazing to see so many tourists waiting to get their picture taken with the bull.

1040: St.Paul's Chapel opens in 1766. It now knows as "the little chapel that stood" because it survived a second brush with destruction on Sep 11,2001, when the WTC buildings collapsed just across the street. And there was no damage to the church.

1130: Oh! There so many people in 9/11 Memorial Preview Site! Luckly I've reserved my visitor pass online yesterday.

New WTC in construction.
Reconstruction will near completion around 2014 at which time all four sides of the Memorial will be accessible to the public.

The names of every person who died in the 2001 and 1993 attacks
are inscribed into bronze panels edging the Memorial pools.

Admission is free, but timed pass is required for entry into the 9/11 Memorial.

Aloe Vera

Aloe Vera

Aloe Vera is also known by the commom name of "burn plant" or "healing plant". They are commonly grown in kitchen gardens to help with minor burns, minor cuts, scrapes, insect bites and other skin problems. Aleos are easy to care, they need lots of sun, warmth and minimal amount of watering. They have bright green stalks that grow up 1 foot long and up to 2 inches thick and usually have creamy stripes or dots along the leaves.

Soil: Well drained, sandy potting mixture.

**I mixed mine with 1/2 of potting soil, the other 1/2fill with sand, peat moss and perlite.

Light: Aloe doew best in light or dappled shade on the porch or on the windowsill in the kitchen. Aloe is even reliable in dry shade. They require bright light for the winter months, in either a sunny window or under fluorescent light. Outside for the summer months, few hours direct sun light in the morning, and place them under the shade in the afternoon will make them happy. If dark brown or orange spot shown on the leave is a sign of sunburn, they mignt need to have some shade for protection.

**Aloe is especially sensitive to sunlight and if transitioned outsidetoo soon, it will easilly burn.

Water: Do not over-water your plant. Give it a good watering every couple of weeks. Let the soil dry out completely before watering again. Water thoroughly about once a week during summer; once a month in winter, or when the stalks looks shriveled.

Temperature: These plants are not cold hardy, they need to be kept indoors int he winter.

** Aloe Vera plants can be toxic if ingested by small animals. If you have pet, be cautious and aware of plant placement.

Project #012. Abstract Jewelry Tree Stand

Things You’ll Need:

Steel Wire: 12 gauge x 72", 16 gauge x 36"
Bend-nose Pliers, Round-nose Pliers, Wire Cutter, Gloves, Tape Measure or Ruler.

**The wire I used in this project was wrapped with a layer of green plastic, I bought it at Ace Hardware shop. You may use other type of wire, just be sure to choose those material which bendable and strong enough to hold your lovely accessories.

Instructions:

1. Cut 16 gauge wire into 24" x 1 piece(for overall strengthening use); 8" x 1 piece(for strengthening the leaves) and 4" x 1 piece(for strengthening the root)

2. Cut 12 gauge wire into 12" x 6 pieces.

3. Use 24" wire to tie the rod firmly.

5. Use 4" wire to give the roots extra strength.

6. Use round-nose pliers to bend the roots as tree stand. Make sure their are stable. At least 2" wide for the tree stand, you are free to adjust the wide if needed.

7. Use same technique as making the roots to bend the leaves. You may create any shape that you want to especially to your accessories. Remember to use the 8" wire to strengthen those leaves, so they can hold your precious well.

8. Now you have your jewelry tree stand done :) CHEER~

Succulent Plant 101

If you like a plant that has an interesting shape or great color. And... No time to fuss over prissy plants. Congratulation! Just like me, Succulent Plant may be the best choice for you. Here are a few of the plants I'm growing in the Missouri US and tips on how to grow and care for succulent plants.

What is a Succulent Plant?

Succulent (Latin: succos = juice, sap) plants from more than 60 families and 300 genera have evolved special water-storage tissues in thickened or swollen leaves, stems or roots as an adaptation to arid environments. They are native to places like South Africa, South America and the arid Southwest. By making the most of scarce available moisture, succulents can survive in habitats that are far too dry for most other plants.

Succulents are equipped to store water in their leafs and stalks so that they can survive long periods of drought. They love heat and sun, need very little water and always look green and lovely. Small succulent plants are nice for container gardens indoors, on the patio or as ground cover.

Soil:

The preferred soil for succulents is light and fast draining. Succulents potting soil can be found in some home and gardening retailers like Lowe’s or Home Depot. Or you can simply just create your own special mixture for your plants.

There are some basic characteristics that a potting mix for succulents should possess: The most important thing is that the soil should drain very well. The best way to achieve this is by adding horticultural-grade sand and grit/pearlite/porous gravel or lava fines to the compost component of the soil (Do not use the potting soil with added fertilizer as it can be too 'rich' for succulents.) Many believe that a good starting ratio for the mix's components are 1/3 compost, 1/3 horticultural-grade sand, and 1/3 grit. But there are no hard and fast rules for potting mixes, so you'll need to experiment with ratios. The above ratio of components represents a good starting point.

Watering and Fertilizing:

Most cactus and succulents have an active period about 1/3 of the year. During this active period watering can be frequent and fertilizer applied. The most active time for most cacti is during the spring and early parts of summer. As this period passes, it is best to reduce the frequency of watering as winter approaches. They require very little water during the cold months.

Watering: During growing period, succulents should be watered at least once a week. Allow soil to dry between thorough watering. Do not mist spray plants as this practice encourages shallow roots and weak plants. When the weather cools and day-length shortens, plants enter a rest period. During that time, increase the interval between watering, and let the potting mixture dry out between watering.

**About water…Tap water contains high concentrations of dissolved minerals. Such minerals can build up in the plant's 'soil' over time, causing harm. Rain water is preferable to tap water, if you can manage to collect and store it. Some people added a cup of vinegar to a gallon of tap water for lowering the pH of the water (Acetic acid is in low conc. in vinegar) and increase soil acidity. Just remember, you do need to significantly water down the vinegar, because vinegar used straight or in too high of a concentration will kill plants very quickly.

Fertilizing: During the growing season, a balanced fertilizer, which has been diluted to 1/4 strength, can be added to the water for each watering. (A balanced fertilizer is one that has roughly equal proportions of Nitrogen, Phosphorous, and Potassium. A 10-10-10 fertilizer diluted to 1/4 strength is ideal.) Do not fertilize your plants during dormancy.

**Tips for homemade fertilizing…

I use egg sheels, used coffee grounds or rice water

as my “secret recipe” for watering my succulents and indoor plants once a month. It’s organic and natural, my plants seem happy with it :)

Light:

Most succulents like bright light, but not all can tolerate intense, direct sunlight.
They are already accustomed to a warm, dry environment, but they do need bright light. Indoors, most succulent plants can take sun near a window, or bright light. As a general rule of thumb, if there is enough sunlight for you to read, there is probably enough sun to make your plant happy. For best result, 5 hours of direct morning sun daily, or place it at southern window. Avoid direct sun from midday sun.If new growth on your plant is pale green and elongated, it needs more light. If the side of your plant facing the light source is yellow, tan, red or indented, it is getting too much light.

Succulents do not like stagnant air. Provide good air circulation for your plants.

After some online classes and searching. A website called "Etsy" finally became my priority choice. This is a great website for trading art and craft business. The most I like about this website is its reasonable fees and easy to set up a new shop. And of couse, their supporting group is strong.

Simple Succulent Art

Succulent plants offer a wide variety of sizes, shapes and colors. They are easy to manage and give your home or office space an instant natural green art. By using succulent to an art project could result an amazing effect. And it could be very fun tough.

I will show you a simple project step by step below:

Graptoveria Succulent Plant

Things You’ll Need:

Succulent plant, 2” plastic container with good drainage, Ceramic pot/mug/bowl that big enough to fix 2” plastic container, Soil mixture, Stone/sea glass/gravel/marbles for top dressing.

Instructions:

1. Mix the soil. Succulents grow in mineral-rich soil, but not in pure sand. Soil should be porous and quick draining. Add ¼ to ½ coarse sand, crush lava rock or perlite to your potting mix for porosity and aeration.

2. Cover the drainage hole at the bottom of the plastic container with a piece of plastic screen or coffee filter, to prevent soil from escaping through the hole.

3. Fill the plastic container with ¼ soil mixture. Place the succulent in the center of the container, and fill the surrounding with soil mixture. Be sure to position the plant so the foliage extends outward.

4. Now, place the plastic container in the ceramic mug.

5. Sprinkle a thin layer of crush rock over the top of the soil for decoration effect. Make sure the crush rock covered the edge of the plastic container.

6. You have just made yourself a wonderful house/office plant. Yeah~

Tips:

WATER: Allow soil to dry between thorough watering. Do not mist spray plants as this practice encourages shallow roots and weak plants.

FEED: Little fertilizer is needed. Once every month.

LIGHT: Not all succulents are sun-lovers, but non do well in subdued light. Place them near the west window is a great idea to give them a morning “sun bath”. For best result, give them 5 hours of direct morning sun daily outdoor. Avoid direct sun from midday sun.

TEMPERATURE: 65^oF – 85^oF

For me, the most challenging part of making a linoleum block printing, is how to present the design/image on the block. Linoleum block print is a good experience to duplicate an image into difference colors. It is really a pleasure to learn about block printing, all you need is just some patient and passion @(^^)@

The first technique that I learned from printmaking class was monoprint. I think monoprint is the easiest one among those printmaking techniques, yet it is fun and just needed a few tools.

The printing process involved in making a monoprint is named such because only one print is made at a time.

Things you'll need: Plexiglas, brushes, wooden sharp tools like tooth stick, pencil or sharp branches), watercolor paper/card stock, printing ink, roller and wooden spoon/press machine.

Multi-purpose glue

How to make it:

1. Prepare 12 pieces of same size recycle papers. Fold it into horizontal.

2. Repeat it until the thickness of the coastal that you wanted.

3. For the last fold, please reference the step as the pictures below :))

4. After finished all the paper strips, you may start to design the pattern of your first handmade cosatal.

Project #004. Paint With Soft Pastel And Color Pencil

Paint with pastel is a little bit messy, but faster than oil paint and acrylic,

yet the effect is good.

This project is to emulate a painting from great artist, with soft pastel.

How to do it:

Sketch the figure with blue color pencil.

Start from the face, then the body. Use color pencil to draw the detail.

Fill the background with soft pastel, then the figure. In the same time with applying pastel, you may need some tissue paper or your finger to assist you to get a better effect. Be careful of each applying color. Apply the brighter color first, then the darker one. This will help you to control the effect more confidently.

Well, it's easy and fun, right?

Project #003. Decorative Lamp-Blossom

Blossom Lamp

I wonder if I could make a special decorative lamp for Christmas. This will have more fun and increase the joy of this season. So I decided to use some simple material to make a unique decorative lamp. The whole idea is come from the shape of flower, that's why "Blossom Lamp" is named.

Things you'll need: 4 Branches (30" long), 12 steel wire (30" long), teflon tape, a box of mini-lights.

How to make it:

Let's make the stand of the lamp first. Wrap the whole branch with teflon tape. Repeat the step for the rest. Arrange the four branches as able to stand itself and tie them with teflon tape.

2. To make the lamp shade. Bend the wire into round shape and wrap with teflon tape. Repeat the rest. Make 12 similar circles. hold them together and tie the center with teflon tape. slowly spread each circle in clockwise direction until it looks like a flower shape.

3. Put the "flower shade" on the stand.

4. The last step is to put on the mini-lights, you may tie the mini-lights on the stand when needed.

Tips:

Mini-lights is easy to get during Christmas season, and that's many options in types and colors.
You can replace teflon tape to floral tape.

You may adjust the length of the branches. It depends you want a table decorative lamp or a floor decorative lamp.

Project #002.CD Coastal

This project is fun yet easy. From impressionism, abstract to modern art.

Let's your imagination begin...

Things you'll need : old cds, acrylic paint, brushes, hot glue, grove.

How to make it :

Clean the surface of the cd.

Use the non-shiny side. Warm up the hot glue before starting to draw with it. slowly applying hot glue on the cd, imagine you are using a pen to draw some nice drawing on the cd. Be extra careful of the hot part of the glue gun, wearing grove is a good idea to protect your hands.
When the glue dried. Apply acrylic paint on the glue. Adding water is not necessary during cd painting, two or three layers may apply as your desired. leave it aside and let it dry for about 60 minutes. In the same time, you may start to draw another master piece.

Hot glue is another idea as a support of the cd. Just apply a small amount of hot glue on the bottom of the cd (as picture shown). You may measure 4 equally angle to get a good balance of support.
Repeat for the remain cds, so you'll have a series of your own collection coasters.

Chicken wire is a well-known marerial for the use of sculpturing beautiful artwork.

I would like to introduce another material - aluminum foil. By wrapping aluminum foil on the chicken wire, we can create a fresh image of a sculpture.

This project is simple, yet fun hobby. The necessary materials are cheap and can be obtained at most hardware or home improvement store.

Are you ready? Let's start the project now~

Project : Sheep

Things you'll need:

1"-or 2"-gauge chicken wire.

Wire cutters.

Flat nose pliers, round nose pliers, chain nose pliers.

Nail and hammer

Working gloves

Hot glue gun

Foam board (this is use as the base of the artwork. Use wood base for better support if you plan to create a bigger artwork).

Aluminum foil (I use 66.66yd x 12"aluminum foil here), select those for more durable and stronger aluminum foil will be more easy to form the shape.

How to make it:

Use wire cutter to cut a piece of 8"x10"chicken wire( I use 1"x1" hex chicken wire here).

Form the chicken wire into a oval shape. Twist, bend and wrap the wire around each other by using pliers. (Please visit http://www.ehow.co.uk/how_5663990_make-wire-art.html for more technique of bending chicken wire).

Now the body of sheep had form. Remember to built a leg for the sheep, it is important to create a space for a nail, you may need to fix the sculpture by pounding it on the wood.

Cut a piece of aluminum foil to wrap the whole sheep, some area may use more layers(for better effect, you can create some texture by simply using hands before wrap the aluminum on the sheep). Use hot glue to firm the aluminum foil.

To create the puffy effect of the sheep. Cut the aluminum foil into pieces of 2"x2" size, roll into ball shape. Stick all the aluminum balls on the sheep until cover up the whole body.

Now you have your sheep done~

Tips and warning: Be careful of the sharp edges of the cut wires as they can cause painful scratches. Wear gloves and long-sleeved shirt when using chicken wire.

Introduction

Can you imagine a world without colors? It will be boring and lifeless. Color can attract or repel. It contains emotion. There is no doubt that color can affect us psychologically.

White color plays a main character in this sculpture. It brings out a harmony atmosphere between the sculpture and the environment.

By applying primary colors: red, blue and yellow, partially on the objects will provide a better rhythm and increase the balancing among the whole sculpture.

The use of irregular shape and grid in the framework gives different perspectives by looking at different angles as you walk around the sculpture.

A little bit of comic, a little bit of color, and a little bit of abstract.

How to obtain the desired color

A particular color is defined by three aspects that define it: tone/hue, saturation, and value.

Tone, is the quality of the color. It defines the color's position in the color wheel: green, blue, violet, yellow, and so on. Changing the tone or hue describes the direction in which the color goes in the wheel, making it bluer, redder, more orange...

Saturation, describes the intensity of the color. A saturated color does not have any presence whatsoever of either its complement or black. It is a pure color. on the other hand, when the chromatic intensity is reduced, we say that the resulting color is neutral. A neutral color is a passive color that has a grayer tone, which is created by mixing a color with its complement.

Value, defines the degree of luminosity. White is added to make a color lighter without changing its tone, and black, or its complement, to make it darker.

Complementary And Adjacent Colors

There are two types of relationships between colors in the color wheel: complementary and adjacent. Two colors are complementary when they are located opposite each other in the circle - green and red, blue and orange, yellow and violet. Adjacent colors are those found next to each other - red and orange, yellow and green, and so on. These two relationships are the foundation for mixing colors; that is, they tell us how to change the color hue, making it darker or grayer.

Have you ever think about having your own gallery in your house?

You know, you can make this come true. All you have to do is simple, start now! In action!

I re-arranged my basement into gallery last winter. It was simply to complete this 3- steps:

1. Paint all the wall in white color (white is the best background to highlight your artwork).

2. Take an accurate measurement of each of your artwork that you want to present.

3. Mark on the wall as how high or the distance between the artworks you want it to be, and set up all hangers or nails on the wall.

Now you are free to decorate your gallery ^!^
