After settling in my nice cozy apartmenr, which I share with 4 more class mates, I have been trying to invoke my explorer sense, which has kind of got very rusty. More than 2 years since I went for a good trekking. Though I visited Newyork alone, My GPS has overtaken my explorer sense. So now in this land of so many Medievial buildings, every building almost looks the same. A little variation in colours, a little variation in height of buildings, other than that I don’t think there is predominantly different in buildings. For people like me, who I so used to keep buildings as landmarks, it’s a little difficult to move around. Maps are great, but I hate the big long sheet of map in my Hand. Costly phone charges have forced me not to use internet in my phone. Worse part of this place, people are so bad in telling directions. Can’t blame them also, people are so used to maps, nobody asks for directions around here and hence nobody seems to have got the chance of telling somebody else any direction.

MBA studies have made me little lazier, especially in doing my pre-work, before going out anywhere. Probably it’s a little mental stress, which I haven’t got since I left TATA Elxsi. I have become more and lazier working with GE. Reduced stress, reduced importance of work, has made me more and more lazy and I could feel that now. All this combined, every time I go out, I end up staring at myself for some time, before figuring out the direction. Having a mental model of the map in your mind, before you go out is little not so used to for me.

Now winter is starting and I guess, Its going little more difficult for free roaming, however, planning to roam around this Christmas time around Copenhagen, in my bike. Hoefully, I would be able to revive back my explorer sense.

It has been simple and easy to use from day one. Still they hold the same simplicity and easy to use as their key selling point. log size of 100 was the only thing that makes me unhappy with the statcounter. But that had never stopped me from using it. Their business model is still the same old "limited capability for free and pay for more". With advent of Ad networks and Ad platforms, Analytics have become a side dish, which comes free of cost for Ad publishing or Advertiser accounts. Google Analytics is a classic example for this. I am a great enthusiast of Google products.

More recently I came across an very interesting company called expo-Max. This Canada based company is a ad network-cum-analytics provider. They also believe in the same mantra of communism (get the money from rich (read advertisers) to poor people (read publishers) like us) - No offences meant to the communists. I am impressed by the simplicity in which expo-max provide analytics. A clean dashboard, shows only what needs to be shown. You are automatically provided with publisher as well as advertiser account. Similar to Google Ads, you can customize the presentation of Ads, in your website. If you want to place an Ad in the Ad network, it provides the same simple and clean environment. since its contextual text ads, it can be useful, just like Google Analytics. But not as heavy as Google analytics.

I am not switching from statcounter, but using it along with statcounter. expo-max for me lies in between the statcounter and google analytics, but definitely not superior to Google Analytics. I would recommend this, if you re looking for simple analytics provider.

First thing i did was redesigning my blog theme. After this I took up the long pending work of varnam.net, which we have been holding for more than 5 years now. this was a long pending job. Still its not complete, However the main design page is over. Three things I had in my mind while putting this together are

Simple Design

Bold Colors (as the varnam name suggests) and

Iconography (I like Icons rather than typography..I suck at typography)

Another long pending work is my home page xability.net. People who know me well know what went behind that name. That page is half done and still in beta stage. But I like the design some how. Again things i had in my mind are

Vibrant Color

Symmetry (this one i messed up!)

Iconography (as usual)

This sudden surge for webpage came after, i was forced to move to my new host stablehost (the guys behind editdns). These guys are good. An irresistible offer of 50% for life (use code WHT50) made me switch to these guys. Anyway it was time for renewal with my old host . As of now support seems to be pretty fine and site response is faster as well. Hope they continue to provide this.

I have been thinking about cloud as a potential opportunity for Chrome OS to really excel. With media going frenzy over the word "cloud", Corporates are start looking Cloud as not just "passing cloud" but as a potential area of focus. It seems more of sense, If Chrome is to be a potential Cloud platform based OS. With Enterprise as a potential customers, It can actually soothe a lot of IT issues enterprise world faces every day. For me it looks to me look Managed hosting brought into enterprise computers. With a lot more control on the cloud and whats hosted there, One can actually avoid all those hotfix downloads and security patches and its issues compatibility of already installed applications.. to a great extend

Another conflicting thought is where the hell is Android going? With fuzzy lines existing between mobile and computer OS (Especially with the netbooks entry), I am seriously expecting possible confusions about the direction of ChromeOS and Android. My guess is its not long, before both gets merged or one gets dissolved into other. As of now, for me Android and ChromeOS are two initiatives that would be trying to get into mainstream OS market. One trying to expand into PC from Mobile and other trying to enter mainstream directly.

If I have to create a term for this, i would call it "cascade market entry strategy"! (don't ask me why I called it so! To be frank, haven'nt seen any Hindi movie worth comparing with this one. Though the main story line revolves round the Chola-Pandya Kingdom's rivalry, its definitely not one of those studio-decorated old history movies. It has a touch of today with a swirl of History. One thing, in order to enjoy the movie, you need to reset your expectation level. Dont even buy ticket with an expectation of watching a normal masala Tamil movie.

Looked to me like, the director is great addict of English movies. The movie gave an impact of watching multiple Hollywood movies in one shot. Yes! many scenes gave me dejavu. It starts like one of those Indiana Jones movies, then moves to goes onto give a feeling of the Anaconda movie. Then quickly it reminded me of some scenes of mummy movie. Then again came the Indiana Jones adventures for some treasure hunt. By the time you feel that, the movie is finished, there comes intermission. Seriously I thought movie was over!!

After intermission, You would be reminded of the movie Apocalypso. Guess, the director has got a hell lot of inspiration from that movie. However, must say the dresses and the locations are so great, that you really feel lo like lost in some world of tribals. Some sort of scary feeling will creep into you without you knowing. You will have your Journey through Gladiator movie scenes, and also the last Samurai scenes. Some fights will give you a feeling of crouching tiger hidden danger! Though I felt the movie is mix of multiple Hollywood movies, director was able to capture the emotions so wonderfully, you really feel that you are a part of the movie. If you know history, you will really appreciate the plot.

I felt the movie is spot-on different from any other tamil movie. It's a real cocktail movie. And a much watchable movie, but not for those faint hearts and under age people.

Pros:

Movie Direction and stunning visuals

Parthiban's acting

Cons:

Fight Scenes should have heard better graphics. Many time i felt People are hanging in the ropes. or graphics were not just right. Could have been better.

Rating:

7/10

I am little bit surprised by web giants like Google taking transliteration as an option to get into Indian market. Not just Google, there are some other Indian companies like quilpad are also which are taking this route. If we really look at the segment of people whom this could be helping is the people who already know English and well versed with the English keyboard. If an ordinary native Hindi guy from Uttar Pradesh or Tamil guy from Tamil Nadu is trying to type a mail in his language, he would really find it difficult to use, because most of the people anyway dont know proper English. People might recognize alphabets but to spell even tamil word in english, Its going to be hell. Finally, you ll end up helping the guy, who actually knows english pretty much. In reality you are complicating the matters by making "aam aadmi" (ordinary person) to learn and spell proper English in order for him to write in his language. I seriously doubt about this route's capability in helping Internet to reach the ordinary person. Associations like NASSCOM and CII should have been lobbying strongly for sops for companies which promote multilingual keyboards. I dont know why even regional political parties are not worried about this? I guess everybody would agree with me if I say onscreen keyboard sucks when compared to the physical ones. If tamil or malayalam language keyboard is there, a native would be more happy about using it rather than typing in his native language, then typing in english and then trying to make sense of it.
With the rise of touch screens, I think there is huge chance for native keyboard layout to find its way into the main stream. Then, only you and me, who are comfortable with typing in English would end up using translitteration while the ordinary native user would type in his language in the native keyboards. I feel in order to effectively increase internet penetration in rural India, you should actually be using native keyboard layouts, rather than transliteration.

Governments are spending fortunes on updating the defense equipments. Unfortunately governments are failing to realize the fact that economic war strategies could be the most devil of all. It could be slow but definitely aggravates the frustration in people, leading to internal cracks, which will ultimately crumble by itself. Cold war US tactics were in the similar lines. These economic centers are getting more and more connected to the network. In the need for providing simplicity and transparency, we are getting and more and more vulnerable to cyber world thief and goons. Most of the companies these days are connected and exchange information through the connected terminals. Most of the listed companies for that matter, the issue is the same. Most of you would have heard of the Google - China episode. If one of the giants like Google' most secured infrastructure could be targeting, how long will it take for such an coordinated attack to take place against say stock market infrastructure or the banking infrastructure. A short bursts of irregularities changing numbers is enough to create havoc. How much time it takes against a company CEO's or an ordinary employee's PC/laptop? You might have all those antivirus and antispywares and anti malwares and firewalls and the list might grow on. The so called experts might talk about "layered security" or "complete protection" etc. But in reality none of these experts could help you in a worst case scenario.
Forget about coordinated complicated attacks, Indian government websites are vulnerable to more simpler "out of the book" example attacks. See this or this or this. Government Cyber cells might be possible to identify or track back to the source of the attacks, but wont be easy to stop such things happenings against economic value centers. Even with so much of IT brain in India, India still looks towards the west for any kind of help. Recent 26/11 Mumbai attacks, India had to get US expertise help for tracking the VOIP calls source. Unfortunately Government has yet to for rapid response team or rapid response architecture to stop any kind of misuse or any kind of cyber attack. Though great Firewall of China might be a devil, it lays a foundation for government control in the case of an emergency. Though there might some kind of research work going on universities, but the will to convert these research into usable product is still not there.

The question is not how good the TV experience is but are we really ready to upgrade? While half of the world is trying to adjust with HDTV upgrades, 3D TV upgrades looks little far away. Just like Color TV did and what HDTV is doing, there is a need for upgrades and investments across the media Continuum. From Video capture devices to end consumer device, you need to upgrade everything. So that raises a question on whether the timing of 3D TV is right?
While definitely there is a lot of opportunity to enhancing the user experience, the question is on the content. Its like a chicken and egg problem. Also, a consolidated effort seems lacking at this point. A consolidated standard committee initiative(ITU) or government push needs to be created or revamped and hence a long way to go for 3D TV become day to day reality. TI's DLP or samsung recent effort, all could have the end result of showing content in 3D, but it will still remain as a premium product. At this point I would like to just pass on 3D TV as the "Peak of Inflated Expectations" of the Gartner's Hype Cycle. Its a very expected move with so much hype in the Mobile Ad market after Google's acquisition of Admob. Looking at the history, its not Google which started this, Nokia had earlier acquired Enpocket. Not sure how much money its generating for Nokia. According to Yahoo, which has been running its own mobile ad network, Mobile Ad spending would go up to 19Billion USD by 2012. Lot of other survey put the figures between 6 Billion to 19 Billion. Given this figure and the number of players, I am not sure what is the real carrot, companies are looking at. Its understandable when Google acquired admob, atleast some synergy is out there in terms of Adsense.

In case of Apple, the carrot seems to be at any cost keep Microsoft out of the bay as far as Iphone are considered. News about Microsoft partnering with Quattro or Microsoft even searching for opportunity in Iphone would have really troubled Apple. Any way Apple didn't had a proper platform for Ad delivery. Quattro serves that purpose. Acquisition is more of defensive move rather than a "Copy Google" move. Any way lot more companies still available in the Mobile Ad network space.

When IBM in 2005 did the same by releasing a set of patents to open source. If you look at its mostly the Application patents, where IBM has been facing strict competition. Looks like Google is taking the similar approach in fighting Microsoft's OS near-monopoly. The question is will the idea sell? While Google looks at advertisement as the key cash flow channel, Microsoft looks at OS and Office suite sales for cash flow. In other way, Google is taking Free TV channel approach where as Microsoft takes pay TV channel approach. Interestingly Most of Microsoft profits comes from OEMs and Enterprises, while a lot of individual users use those pirated versions. Though some what serious Microsoft seems not very serious about tackling this problem. This being the situation, who is Google targeting? Enterprise or Individual users? Linux has been trying to enter enterprise market for quite some time but with little success. The mantra of service-based pricing has not really been taking off with linux for some reason. Even Google Enterprise is also not a big hit enterprises. So Google might not be betting big time on the Enterprise sector. Here Google plays a very interesting game of targeting the mobility machines (netbooks/laptops). This is the only world where OEMs really make money. Branded PCs face a very strong competition from custom assembled PCs. Laptops or netbooks don't have such a competition. So bundling the OS price into End product is the best option to make money. So OEMs would be one channel of making money for google. Penetration into individual customer is again another tougher battle for Google. Here it battles Apple, Microsoft or the closer alternative Linux. However the difference here is Chrome OS is trying to make PC as webclients, with most things hosted some where in the cloud. Just like TV, but an extreme interactive one. Probably with a lot of Ad powered free applications, thus changing the meaning of free and premium applications. Advantage is the portability of your data as well. However the disclaimer is you got to pay for internet. ISPs would have great advantage of making more money. This restricts a normal user in some or the other way. \

Media has made so much hype that the word "Social" is being observed as online. All this days man is being seen as social animal, now he is being perceived as online social animal. I wont be wrong, if I say online OS could bring in more virtual Social Animal attitude to man.

But this year I am on to it. I am not going to discuss any resolutions here or how I am going to achieve it, but am hoping to keep up to the resolutions.

Top 10 Things that I would like to have to make my life more simpler are..
1. Unified Bill Format across all super markets in India.. Would be good if its direct software readable. But great if they could email my bill directly in qif or some other standard format. I can track my expense with much ease.
2. Sub 20$ PC to TV wireless connectivity. Sick of burning CD/DVD or copying movies to my USB. If I have a overlay of TV with PC functionality on TV then nothing greater than that. infinite possibilities. Currently thinking of connecting Mac Mini to TV. But its a damn costly solution.
3. Sub 20$ accelerometer based universal remote for my TV/DVD/STB/....or whatever I have.
4. Slick LED/LCD display on the back of my car with voice recognition for input. Educated people here drive more crazily than uneducated here. Seems need to change to definition of "educated".
5. Low cost Small flying ambulances/emergency vehicles. A must in places like India, where cars are status symbols and not necessities. I think Tatas need to think beyond vehicles on roads.
6. RTI (right to Information) was the great first step in India. But now govt agencies are saying they cant handle so many querries. Solution for this problem is to make details available online proactively. Digitize every government agency workflow. Make workflows more transparent. I think government needs to mandate this.
7. Realtime location sensing inside home. Next time I lose my car key, I should be able to search in my PC and it gives me the location. UWB..rfid..looks can have wonderful opportunity.
8. A cheap light weight e-book reader. ofcourse must have pdf reader. Sick of converting pdfs into multiple formats for multiple ebook readers.
9. A non power hungry fast Virtualisation base OS. Which can load any mobile OS with wine-like application, which can run any cross-OS applications. Thats what I call My mobile.
10. I need to have more ideas :P

The most frustrating thing about this is crazy file size limit message that pops up after you upload the file. This is mainly because, scripting languages, especially Javascript, which is the most widely used, does not have the capability of checking the file size. Hence programmers always implement the file size check at the server end. While looking for solutions for implementing file check in the client side, I cam across this interesting implementation.

http://digitarald.de/project/fancyupload/3-0/showcase/attach-a-file/

This is a very neat way of addressing the problem. It took most pain out of me. Its so customizable, that it blends into most of the websites out there. Hats off to the developer! The best part is it is available in MIT license!! (Just Now got my Patent Information Specialist certificate from WON)

Share this post :

No wonder Amazon introduced Kindle and forayed into CE market. E-book readers are good, but when connectivity is also incorporated, it becomes cool. This is what exactly Amazon did with Kindle. Now Sony with their new device bets on wooing customer to “not to kindle”. the strategy is very clear, while Amazon tries to be more on propitiatory standards, Sony is betting on open standards (or the so called one). While it supports most ebook formats available out there, Obviously it fails to support the Amazon format, raising the question whether “customer is the king or content is the king?”.

Whatever it is I am as of now happy with reading on my Laptop. Though, it was a great experience reading using kindle.

Share this post :

This is a great delight for most of the Indian ATM users, as they dont have wander looking for their bank ATMs.

This welcome step of RBI has completely different opportunity hidden, that is nothing but the business of white label ATMs. Most of the times, in tier two cities in India, ATMs take a additional role of being a landmark. Think about this as a an opportunity for advertisers and other value added service providers. Though it might seem funny to hear "Coke ATM or kingfisher ATM at the corner of the road"..that provides a perfect replacement for those big hoardings. It can also provide opportunities of point of sale for various commodities. Another avenue to reach out to your customers.

While the content owners are going gaga over the opportunities online medium provides, this could be an additional revenue opportunity for distribution of content. Talking to some friends in Indian finance industry, i understand that the industry is preparing for the worst and hoping for the best. The tension is all gone. Every body is in "come what may" attitude. There is an unusual calm in the Indian IT industry. Though the senior managements some times come out and speak alleviating words, They also very well know and very cautiously waiting for the storm to come. Govt. is trying all possible ways to reduce the ill-affects of the coming storm. This is really the feeling, a feeling of sinking, but not yet sunk. Feeling of failure, but not yet failed. Expecting the worse with watchful eyes....of man that's triggering my poetic subconscious!

Reducing the bank rates or repo rates are definitely not helping the situation, but is increasing the sense of insecurity, gives the feeling of the storm coming nearer and echo can be heard more louder! I hear from my business development friends about the difficulties in getting new businesses. Every one has the one answer "recession and nobody is giving business!" Especially those in the IT outsourcing industry. US has been traditionally the biggest market for outsourcing industry in India and thats why the industry is thinking of ways to interpret Obama's words, which might give them some hope of continued revenues. But they have to face the fact, that their sales folks are ultimately going to blame the recession for not achieving targets! How much can the senior management push! How many heads can roll? End of the day every body works for shareholders and thats is the truth and that is the bigger picture! and is the foundation of the whole business system.

As the whole world tries to alleviate the effects of this storm, I strongly feel, the focus should not be on the short term targets, but on the long term. What we need is the innovations in business models and not in the product pricing. Especially the Indian IT industry should be focusing on building relationships and helping the customers weather the storm. Everybody is sure, that the revenues are going to get hit. Then why should we focus on targets and shareholder value for short term. Share holders definitely wont be interested in killing the ducks which is seen to lay gold eggs. This year you may survive, what about next. and what about next to next. We should accept the fact that this is not just alow point in the economy curve, but a reset. Whether you get revenue are not, this is the time to focus highly on holding your customers. Sales folks is known to keep the contacts floating, but corporate wide movement to keep the focus on engaging customers, should be the priority of the time. Whether it be internal IP development or cost cutting initiatives, go out the help the customer. Help them to position your IPs strategically. yes I mean that Your IPs. Help them enter New markets proactively. This is a great opportunity to build stronger ties with these companies and the industry. This is not the time to move up your value chain creating competitors out of customers, this is the time to bring more value to the value chain and there by building relationships through out the value chain, which will definitely help in your company vision. This is not the time to expedite your company goals, but to defer your thoughts on that. I would caution and say this is not the opportunity to splash your reserve to enter a new territory. Save every penny, innovate around business models to bring most value to you customer in his time of need. T&M and Fixed bids are not the only options. Try to think beyond those. "Defer", "IP Lending" etc are some of the keywords, you can think of...Better luck!

Share this post :

Every phone manufacturer have their own style of charger. Nokia makes one...no two ..no i dunno how many :). Sony Ericsson have its own style and every manufacturers their own. Some have usb charging and many more.

Slashdot reports, EU commission has waken up on this issue and wants a standard charger for all mobile phones. Looks like EU commission don't like the existence of companies like Juicejack and igo. Soon EU will ask for standard laptop charger, then standard charger for portable players and finally standard charger for all devices!. When adwords try to fill the coffers of Google, youtube is like big hole in the bottom of the coffer. Looks like youtube is trying to prove wrong the unsaid law of web advertising which goes like this.." Revenue through a Web site is directly proportional to the popularity of the site". This law holds pretty much good for most of the common web sites, however, one needs to be extremely careful, when it comes to video related web sites, especially the ones thrive on User generated content (UGC). from bandwidth costs to fighting copy right issues, it takes away the best of your cash bandwidth (If you have one :) ).

Google has been trying its best for monetizing youtube. Recently Google launched its TV version of youtube. www.youtube.com/tv . If you have a PS3 or Wii, you can try this one. Opera also will do the trick. Its quite good layout fitting those small screen which has been dominated mainly by the soaps and ofcourse games in some devices.

Some time back I wrote about the there could be a possibility of Google venturing into IPTV. However in that post, I missed the very fact, that Google is more interested in acquiring/aggregating content rather than the devices. So the best approach, I could think of today that Google can get into is tie up with box vendors, to get Google into the homes. tag TV shows real time, mix TV channels with youtube channels. Push advertisements into the boxes, analyses the usage patterns, push content more appropriately etc etc.

But the only issue I see here is the broadcasters, who are in a world of cut throat competition. They wont be interested in letting anybody eat the little pie they are getting. Till then Google had to live with youtube and see different ways of monetizing. However www.hulu.com has learned from the youtube mistakes,. Looks like this kid, who is only available in North America is making enough revenue.

Share this post :

He was said to have played a major role in sending terror emails to the media and police before the recent bomb blasts in India. Media claimed that this engineer played a mojor role in hacking Wifi networks of people to send emails.
The truth is terrorists used unsecured wifi networks to send emails. Indian police think, it needs to extra brilliance and engineering degree to access the unsecured Wifi networks. They think you need to be a wifi expert to do this. Come on man this is barely hacking..a pure insult to hacking community. And Indian media also added fuel to the fire by coining terms such as "techie terror" and "wifi hacker".
