Importance of Ascendant and Arudha lagna in prediction

S N Rao

The birth
ascendant is the sign of the zodiac that was just rising over the eastern
horizon at the moment the native is born. Eg. If you were born at sunrise, your
birth ascendant would be the same as your sun sign. Your birth ascendant is
important for two reasons. Firstly your birth ascendant determines your
personality, or what you show the world as you deal with it. Secondly, it
establishes the position of your house in the horoscope. That's because the
birth ascendant marks the beginning of your first house. The birth ascendant changes
signs roughly every two hours.

Because the
Ascendant Sign is specific to the time and place of the individual birth, it
represents the self and personality of the individual. Ascendant is the sign rising at the time of birth. The sign rising
influences the individual with certain inherent characteristics. The
lord of the sign resides somewhere in the chart. The lord of this sign is the ascendant lord. Its placement influences the above
characteristics and modifies them to a certain extent.

The term Arudha
means mount and represents the image of the individual. It indicates how the
subconscious mind of the native works and his likes and dislikes. Arudha is based
on the placement of lord of the sign. It is computed using the following
method:

(1)
Rule: Measure the number of signs from the house of interest to its lord.
Measure the same number of signs from the lord. The resultant sign
contains the Arudha of the house.

(2) Exception:
Arudha of a house cannot be in the 1st or 7th from the house. If the Arudha computed
above falls in the 1st or 7th from the original house then the 10th house from it
becomes the Arudha.

Birth Ascendant and the
position of Arudha lagna is very important and significant in understanding the
true nature of a person. Using the
above information I have tried to analyse the nature of individuals having the
same birth ascendant sign with different Arudha’s.

Example
1:

Lagna is in Aries
and Mars is in Aries.

Here the birth ascendant will be Aries and
Arudha lagna will be in Capricorn.

The
general characteristic of a native with Aries ascendant will be present in the
sense that the native tends to be energetic, active,quick-tempered,
aggressive.

However the influence of Mars in Aries will
imply that the Arudha lagna will be Capricorn. Hence the above qualities will
get modified. The relation between Mars in Aries (Capricorn Arudha) will
enhance the strength of Mars and increase its energy. (This is because Mars
gets exalted when it is in Capricorn). Hence the placement tends to provide the
maximum positive energy to the native. The native tends to be highly ambitious
and craves for power, recognition, distinction, and status. The native is
interested to become a leader in his surroundings. If the energy of Mars receives affliction from
a malefic planet either by conjunction or association or by aspects then it can
make the native appear ruthless, manipulative and bull-dozing over anyone who
stands in his way. He is likely to become tenacious career oriented in his
resolve to feel successful.

The
focus of the native in his life will be achieving success and having a higher
status in life(the influence of the 10th house). The native is
likely to be stern, more serious and hard working (the influence of Capricorn
sign). Mars is the karaka for physical strength and courage. This placement
will help the individual to display his physical strength and courage at his
work place. Usually this placement gives a high ranking position in the army,
police force.

Mars
is the karaka for younger sibling. The 3rd house is seen for younger
sibling. The sign Gemini happens to be the 3rd house. It is ruled by
Mercury. Mercury and Mars are inimical towards each other. Capricorn happens to
be the 8th house from the 3rd house. This placement shows
troubles and causes difficulties for the native in getting along with his younger
sibling.

Mars
is the karaka for land and property. The 4th house is seen for land
and property. Capricorn happens to be the 7th house from the 4th
house. It shows that the native would get benefits in property through
partnerships / marriage.

Mars
here will give the native positive energy, independence, will and self
confidence. He would have good logical ability and scientific bent of mind with
good administrative qualities.

(--
to be contd--)

Except for Sun and the Moon, all
planets become retrograde once in a while. Rahu and Ketu, which are not
physical planets are always in retrograde motion. The Panchanga / Almanac
provide the details whether the planet is retrograde or not on a particular day.
It is usually identified by a suffix R in the birth chart.

When a planet appears to be moving in
the opposite direction as compared to its normal movement, it is called a retrograde
planet. In Vedic Astrology all astronomical observations are done considering
the earth to be the reference point. This system of observation is called
'geocentric'. This may be likened to everyone's common experience while sitting
in a moving train. If the train you are sitting in passes by another train
which is moving in the same direction, but slower than your train, this other
train seems to be moving backwards against the backdrop of distant trees. This
is so because you consider yourself to be the reference point and hence
stationary. Largely, a similar phenomenon takes place with the planets also,
when they appear to be moving backwards. In our solar system, the planets are
orbiting around the Sun with varying speeds. The earth is also doing likewise.

Inner and outer planets: The planets
that lie between the Sun and the earth are called inner or inferior planets.
These are Mercury and Venus. They can never go too far away from the Sun.
Mercury can go a maximum of 27 degrees form the Sun and Venus cannot go beyond
47 degrees from the Sun. These two planets retrograde when they are between the
earth and the Sun. Since Mercury and Venus are always quite close to the Sun
(as viewed from the earth) it is difficult to know from their position in the chart
alone when they are retrograde.

The planets whose orbits lie outside
the orbit of the earth are called outer or superior planets. These are Mars,
Jupiter and Saturn. The extra-Saturnine planets, i.e., Uranus & Neptune are
also in this very category. Outer planets retrograde when the earth is between
the Sun and the planet. The outer planets are definitely retrograde when they
are in the 6th, 7th or 8th house from the Sun. Sometimes they are retrograde
even when they are in the 5th or 9th house from the Sun, but not always.

Vedic astrology has given a lot of
importance about the position (longitude) of a planet in the zodiac as far as determining
the strength and delineation is concerned. That is the reason we have detailed
descriptions of deepest points of exaltation, debilitation, own rashi
placements and velocity of the planet. Velocity has two components, one is
speed and the other is direction. When a planet increases the speed, it becomes
atichari. It is termed Vakri when retrograde. Cognisance of velocity of a
planet has been taken in Shadbala which is the actual strength of a planet
arising out of six difference sources. Out of these six sources, one is termed
Cheshtabala. A retrograde planet gets full 60 shashtiamshas as its Cheshtabala.
All other states of motion get 45 or less. This strength is added to the
strength of a planet derived through a host of other sources. Thus its relative
importance is very low in Shadbala. In practice it tends to affect more on the
mental plane rather on the physical plane. According to Shri Mantreshwara of
Phaladeepika a retrograde planet has the status of an exalted planet. However
there are not many takers for the above statement. In Sarvatha Chintamani the
results of the dasha of retrograde planets, as under:

The Sun and the Moon are never
retrograde.

Mercury: In the dasha of retrograde
Mercury the native gets happiness and good luck, prosperity from wife &
children. He would engage himself in acts of charity and would be highly
religious.

Venus the native gets much honor from superiors / government. He would get
happiness from vehicles, fine clothes and ornaments. He would benefit from
female company.

Mars in retrogression, the native will be full of fear. He would face
opposition from enemies, thieves, fire and animals. He may fall from the
position held and may live in solitude.

Jupiter: The dasha of a retrograde
Jupiter bestows on the native much knowledge and benefits from friends and
society. He would be satisfied and content and would be prosperous.

Saturn: Retrograde Saturn in its dasha
causes failures in actions, frustrations in undertakings, sorrows and loss.

Analysis of Muhurat time – Modi
undertaking as PM

S N Rao

The
political scenario in the Indian subcontinent has taken everyone by surprise.
Although everyone expected the NDA to win the elections, no one expected that
they would win by such a huge margin. Mr Modi and his team are now gearing up
to form the next government. What’s more
interesting is the timing of these events being unfolded in the current Indian
political situation and the haplessness of the opponents who are in total
disbelief. It is a win for the world’s largest democracy and the people of
India. The world is now looking up to us to create an impact on bringing business confidence back. The stock markets
appear to have been buoyed by the results, because of the sizeable majority
taken by the BJP, which has now created certainty and hopes of stability in
India’s leadership.

The
Indian government ruled by the Congress has lost the faith of the common man. This
is probably the first time in the history of Indian independence that Congress
has received such a poor response and so few seats. The aspiration of the common
man has triggered a possible revolt which can be foreseen from the Indian Independence
day chart. Sun Maha dasha – Ketu antardasha activates a new change in
rulership. Mr Modi will take the oath on May 26th at 6.00 pm.

Analysing
from the developments through Vedic astrology in the muhurat chart, the
ascendant is Libra with exalted Saturn and Rahu. The common man is represented
by Saturn. The exaltation indicates the massive mandate given by the people
given to the party. The transit Saturn’s placement in Libra will give strength
and belief to the common men. It gives the common man just the right dose of
energy to demand justice from the government.

Saturn
rules the 10th house, the house of rulers in the Indian independence
chart. Saturn is the significator (karaka) for justice and the common masses. This
is probably the reason why we are the largest and effective democracy in the
world with over a billion population. This also explains the belief and regards
the common men have in this country towards the constitution. The transit of
Saturn will be in Libra till Nov 2014. Libra sign rules justice and fair
judiciary. It indicates that the new government would be strict and may take
tough decisions with regards to law and order, judiciary. We can expect some harsh
actions against the corrupt and the guilty. This transit of Saturn is likely to
make the Judiciary and the judges more important. Very soon we may see them
take very tough decisions which may change the political landscape of this
country.

Jupiter
occupies Libra in the Indian Independence Day chart. The transit of Jupiter in Gemini
with a strong Mercury is likely to activate the planet in a manner that senior
religious, industrialists, economists and IAS oficers would be involved in the
decision making process. We can expect a solid foundation being laid for
revisiting the economics of our country. New initiatives and policies with
regards to FDI, GST is likely to make a difference in the attitude of the
government. Real GDP growth could be boosted by
the results as the BJP had promised to prioritize economic growth in their
election manifesto.

Sun rules the government in astrology. The activation
of Sun in Taurus is a sign of practicality and stability. The sign Taurus rules
economy and finance. It indicates that the priority of the new government will be to conduct and carry out reforms needed to improve
India’s business environment. The expectation of the common man from the new
government can be seen from the placement of Moon in Aries with Venus and Ketu.
This position will give the common man high expectations and belief that the new government
will fulfill its promise. High hopes and sudden results in
spheres of growth can create changes to the existing Tax and labor market
reforms. If backed by a gradual opening up to foreign investment it would seek
to create additional jobs.

Importance
of Debilitated planets in Astrology

S N Rao

According to Vedic astrology all planets get
exalted and debilitated when placed in a particular sign. The significance
given to such planets decide the delineation of the horoscope with regards to
the level of impact in the life of the native. Exaltation and debilitation of a
planet simply means that the strength of the planet is strong or weak in the
birth chart. Any planet exalted in the birth chart means that the planet is
very strong and is capable for giving its implied results in a maximum manner
to the native. It has got no relevance to the benefic or malefic impact to the
native. An exalted planet does not mean that the planet is positive and will
give benefic result to the native. Similarly a debilitated planet does not mean
that the planet is malefic and will give negative results to the native. This
point is not clearly understood by many laymen and it creates confusion in
their minds while analyzing the horoscope.

The basics has been clearly defined in Vedic
astrology texts which gives the exaltation and debilitation points of each
planet. It is provided below for easy understanding

While delineating the horoscope it is important to
determine whether the concerned planet is a benefic or malefic planet in the
birth chart. The nature of the planet, the house in which the planet is posited
and the karakatwa it belongs to plays an important role to understand how the
planet will behave. The planet will give its result only if it is activated in
the maha dasha / antardasha / pratiantardasha / transit periods. Hence all the
above factors need to be clearly understood to decipher the result of the
debilitated planet.

Eg. For Aries Ascendant Jupiter is the lord of the
9th house and the 12th house. Jupiter is a benefic planet
as it rules the trikona house. Jupiter is the karaka for knowledge. When
Jupiter is debilitated due to its placement in Capricorn, it influences the 10th
house, the house of karma. When Jupiter is activated in the life of the native,
it gives the native high integrity, ethical, maturity, disciplined and organized
behavior at the work place. However it causes restriction to the native to rise
ahead in his career and achieve a high position. He may be highly
knowledgeable, but he may not be able to use his knowledge to his advantage in
the work place. The rulership of Jupiter over the 12th house gives
him miserly qualities and sometimes he can make foolish decision which has a
negative impact on his career and resulting in losses. He would like to work
alone and can get lost when placed in a large team.

Eg. For Gemini ascendant Jupiter is the lord of the
7th house and the 10th house. Jupiter is a malefic planet
as it rules the kendras. When Jupiter is debilitated due to its placement in
Capricorn, it influences the 8th house. The karakatwa of Jupiter to
give knowledge makes the native highly intelligent. It makes the native curious
to understand the mystic science and matters regarding life and death. The
rulership of Jupiter over the 7th house makes the native independent
in relationships. He would not be too emotional in love and relationships would
be more subtle in nature. However he can be manipulative to get his work
carried out by his partners. He would be lucky and benefit in receiving wealth from
joint investments, inheritance, business dealing or married partner. Due to the
rulership of Jupiter over the 10th house, He would feel restrained
at the work place and would not get job satisfaction.

Eg. For Virgo ascendant Mars is the lord of the 3rd
house and the 8th house. Mars is a highly malefic planet. When Mars
is debilitated in Cancer it influences the 11th house. This
placement makes the native highly ambitious. Mars is the karaka for action.
This placement reduces the physical action for the native. It gives the native
calm strength and determined patience to achieve his goals and targets. He is
likely to be a schemer and plotter. He would not be able to have a large friend
circle as this placement would make him highly moody like the phases of the
moon and tends to make him a critic. However friendships are not taken lightly
and he would be loyal and emotional to his trusted few friends. Leadership
qualities are a natural to him and it will help him to take bold and risky
decisions to achieve his objectives. He may not be able to understand the
delicacies in life and would be too blunt in matters regarding relationships
and raising children.

The shadvarga charts are also very important for
delineation. The navamsha chart in particular. If a planet is debilitated in
the birth chart and is exalted in the navamsha chart then the planet needs to
be treated as an exalted planet and results modified accordingly.

In my experience debilitation of a benefic planet
reduces the good qualities of the planet, however if there is a cancellation of
the debilitation then the native achieves great heights in his life. The
debilitation of a malefic planet causes many untoward incidences in the life of
the native, however if there is a cancellation of the debilitation then it
improves the qualities of life which the planet is a karaka of.

Raja Yoga Manifestation – Vedic Astrology

How a raja yoga in a vedic chart is going to manifest
itself is always hard for anastrologer to predict especially if he is not
acquainted with the owner of the chart whichhas a raja yoga in it. While it is
very easy to predict the time when such a raja yoga willshow its effects,
especially by using the Vimshottari Dasha, it requires more than just acasual
glance at the chart to explain the nature of the raja yoga.Raja yoga means a
conjunction of at least two plants that produce success, wealth andgood fortune.
When a lord of a Kendra and a Trikona combine in a house or aspect
eachother, a raja yoga is formed. Such combinations however are very common and
foundvery often in the charts of famous as well as ordinary people. While a raja
yoga combination is always favorable when it appears in a chart one should be
cautious while interpreting it. Astrologers should verify whether planets that
form araja yoga are strong or not. This is usually done by studying the
position of the concerned planets in the Navamsa chart first or by
calculating their Shadbala. If the planets involved are strong enough one can
expect good results during the periodsof the planets. But this is only half work
done. While a raja yoga promises good fortuneand success during its period, how
and from where success is going to come is thehardest to predict. The houses in
which raja yoga is formed give us some idea about the area of success butthen
again the planets themselves are indicators of houses they own and have to
give their effects. In such a scenario it becomes extremely difficult to
predict the exact nature of effects. Some astrologers see a raja
yoga conjunction in the 9thhouse and then and there predict
success, fame and fortune in foreign lands which the 9thhouse rules, when in
fact the
9th house also rules spirituality and religion. Hence one
may become just a verydevout monk! That does not mean we just consider a house
in interpreting a raja yoga combination. Alot also depends on the houses owned
by the planets forming the raja yoga. In the chart below, the 5th
lord is
conjunct 7th lord in the 9th house. During the major
period of the 7th lord and the sub period of the 5th lord the person fell in
love with a highly educated woman and soon thereafter married her. The 9th
house rules
higher education also. The fifth house rules love affairs and the 7th
house rules
marriage. The planets thus during their time produced the results of all threehouses
at the same time. This peculiar combination of three factors or what is commonwith
these three houses is how the manifestation of a raja yoga took place in
this case.Although it is easier to understand this, it is always difficult for
an astrologer to find thesemanifestations. For example the 5th
house also
represents fame, while the 7th house represents fame and
honor in foreign countries while the 9th house also represents
fameand foreign countries. But the owner of the chart below has never been
abroad. As
can be seen, it is always difficult for the astrologer to find exactly how the
raja yoga isgoing to manifest itself and familiarity with the owner of chart is
very often helpful in giving accurate predictions not just about raja yoga combinations but any other auspicious
or auspicious
combinations.

Third House and Career – Vedic Astrology

The third house in Vedic Astrology deals with all art related matters. Painting, singing, writing, films, dance, drama are matters which are governed by the third house. In the charts of famous actors and singers we very often see a strong third house or many planets placed in the third house. We even see a strong third house in the charts of archeologists, journalists, and people associated with the media industry.

Venus is not the karaka of the third house but Venus represents art and all the third house matters indicated above. When Venus gets connected with the third house either by ownership, occupation or aspect, it gives a boost to the third house matters.

Those who are looking for a career where glamour and public attention are involved need to have a strong Venus and a strong third house.

Together with Venus other planets will produce different artists when placed in the third house.

Mercury indicates writing and when a strong Mercury gets associated with the third house a career in writing is indicated. If not a career in writing, then a person may have good writing skills. This is seen in the charts of journalists and writers.

Professors and teachers are seen from Jupiter’s occupation, aspect or ownership of the third house, as Jupiter being Guru governs teaching.

Saturn in third house, career-wise, gives an interest in philosophy. If a person is a writer, his writings will be philosophical with Saturn in the third house; if a movie director, then he will make movies that have a philosophical outlook.

Ketu and Rahu if aspected by a benefic will give glamour and the struggle for it.

Mars indicates courage, as does the third house and its relationship with the third house can give a career in fields like police and defense.

Sun placed in third house is the same as Mars in the third house and will give courage.

Moon in the third house career-wise indicates an interest in psychology.

The third house governs will power and concentration powers as well. With strong willpower a person can achieve many things easily in life. Afflictions to the rest of the birth chart but a strong third house at the same time can give a person what he wants through willpower. Also, with strong concentration powers a person can focus all his energies on the desired objects and achieve them easily.

A natal chart or
birth chart is a view of the sky from the exact place and the exact
time of a person’s birth. Personality, emotions,
and priorities can be observed through astrological aspects between the
placement of planets in the natal chart. The Sun sign is the constellation
the Sun is in at the exact time of birth. The Moon sign is the Zodiac
sign the Moon is in at the exact time of birth. The Rising sign or
Ascendant is the Zodiac sign on the eastern horizon at the exact time of birth.
Add 12 houses and 10-11astrological planets to the mix, all representing
different areas of life, and the beginning of an individual
personality can be seen. The Aspects are how all of the above relate to each
other. Positive and negative, weak and dominant, aspects can skew the original belief
of astrological representation. For example, if there is a conjunction
including Venus and the Moon in Aries, it will strengthen the need for love
and beauty, feeding on the energy of Mars, Aries’ natural ruler.

A Conjunction is the most powerful aspect. When a natal
chart shows two or more astrological planets within 10 degrees of each
other, the significance of the planets is combined. When a Conjunction appears,
you can expect a double amount of energy from both astrological planets’
influences. Such as, the previous example with Venus and the Moon; love
(Venus) and emotions (Moon) are doubly displayed.

Sextile

A Sextile is the opportunity
aspect. When a natal chart shows two or more astrological planets near 60
degrees of each other, there is a small possibility for opportunity in theareas
the planets represent. This aspect is positive in nature, however, not
very dominant. In fact, many other influences in the chart may over ride
any of its contributions.

Square

The Square is a negative aspect causing one to learn a lesson
by challenge and difficulty. Once again, if two or more astrological planets
are near 90 degrees of each other, it mayprove a bit of difficulty in
the areas the planets represent. It could possibly cause a much needed
change, and if one is aware of this in the birth chart, it can be dealt with. A
square often indicates internal conflict.

Trine

If two or more astrological planets are near 120 degrees apart,
they create a Trine. This could be a major influence on harmony and
communication concerning the areas the planets represent. The Trine is a
great aspect to have. It helps to ease any differences between the two
planets. This aspect is a peaceful aspect. Too many Trines is a person’s
natal chart can cause them to be weak in character since they won’t experience
the normal amount of hard knocks life dishes out.

Opposition

An Opposition in a natal chart occurs when two or more
astrological planets are near 120degrees apart. This aspect is known as the
second most influential aspect. When an Opposition appears in a birth chart,
you can expect exactly what it’s named for; obstacles, and unresolved
issues.

The zodiac is divided into 12 sections, called signs by astrologers. Each sign is identified by unique characteristics.
The Sun in astrology is said to represent a persons personality, their identity, ego or basic mode of
expression. It is one of the most important factors in a persons chart and most people will identify with their
sun sign descriptions to some extent. The strength of each person sun can only be determined by looking at chart as a whole

Your Moon in sign describes your emotions. Especially your emotional reactions. The sign your Moon is in gives a clue as to what you need to feel emotionally secure and right within yourself.

Apart from the above, planets are classified as favourable and adverse based on
births under the 12 different ascendants. These are narrated below:
Aries: Pure benefics are Jupiter and the Sun. Malefics are Saturn, Mercury and
Venus. Venus is the prime killer. Jupiter will give inauspicious results if he is
conjunct an adverse planet. However when with Saturn he is not wholly adverse.
Taurus: Saturn and the Sun are benefics and can cause Rajayoga. Jupiter, Venus
and Moon are not auspicious and may prove death inflicting palnets. Mercury can
cause some Yoga.
Gemini: Venus is the only benefic. Mars, Sun and Jupiter are inauspicious. Saturn
and Jupiter together behave in the same manner as for Aries birth. The Moon is the
prime killer. (Some replace the Moon with Saturn).
Cancer: Mercury and Venus are malefics. Mars, Jupiter and Moon are auspicious.
Mars is a supreme Rajayoga karaka. Saturn is capable of inflicting death and is
Maraka lord.
Leo: Inauspicious planets are Mercury, Venus and Saturn. Mars, Jupiter and the
Sun are benefics. Jupiter with Venus cannot give fully benefic results. Saturn is
Maraka and the Moon’s effects depend on her association.
Virgo: Mars, Jupiter and the Moon are adverse. Venus is the only favourable
planet. Mars is a Maraka lord.
Libra: Saturn and Mercury prove auspicious. The moon and Mercury and capable
of conferring great benefits and position. Jupiter, the Sun and Mars are
inauspicious. Mars is a Maraka lord. Venus gives balanced results for this
ascendant, if unafflicted by others.
Scorpio: Jupiter, as well as the Moon are benefics, the Moon and the Sun are
Rajayoga planets. Mercury and Venus give inauspicious effects. Saturn gives mixed
results . Jupiter if illrelated will become a Maraka. Mars is of mixed nature.
Sagittarius: Venus is adverse. Mercury, Mars and the Sun are yogakaraakas. If the
Sun joins Mercury he will also become a Rajayoga Karaka. Saturn is a killer apart
from Venus.
Capricorn: Mars, Jupiter and the Moon are inauspicious. Venus and Mercury are
benefical. Saturn is not a Maraka lord, while Mars etc. may prove as killers.
Aquarius: Jupiter, Moon and Mars produce adverse results. Venus and Saturn are
exclusively benefics. Mars and Jupiter are killers. If others are related to one of
these two, they will also become adverse.
Pisces: Saturn, Venus, Mercurry and the Sun are classified as unfavourable. Mars
and Moon are auspicious. Mars and Jupiter are Yogakarakas. Saturn and Mercury
are Marakas.

KARAKAS IN VEDIC ASTROLOGY
The student of vedic astrology comes across the word „karaka‟ quite often in various contexts. In fact most standard texts devote an entire chapter for the „karaka‟ . For instance Parasara‟s magnum opus the „Brihat Parasara Hora Sastra‟ has an entire chapter titled „kaarakaadhyaaya‟ . Even the dasa delineation depends on how accurately one identifies all the karakas involved. Every prediction is based on these karakatwas. In fact any successful astrologer will tell you that your understanding of the chart is directly proportional to how thorough your knowledge of the karakas and their appropriate use is.
The word Karaka means a „significator‟ or “one who causes”. Karaka of a matter is the significator of that particular matter and signifies / causes events related to that matter. Significators can be classified according to various criteria.
Significations may be Natural or Acquired
Natural significations of planets are permanent or fixed in a way and are based on their innate nature. For instance Sun is the karaka for the soul, Moon for the mind, Mercury for the intellect, Mars for courage and Jupiter for children. The detailed natural significations for various planets are given elsewhere.
Planets acquire the power to signify a matter by virtue of their lordships and positions too. These significations are Acquired and change in each chart. For instance the lord of the first house (who ever the planet maybe) acquires signification over all the matters governed by that house. Likewise the second lord acquires signification over matters governed by the second house such as speech, possessions, food/diet etc. The detailed l significations for various houses are given elsewhere.
Acquired or Temporary or Variable karakatwas of planets are defined in another way too in Jaimini system. The Charakarakas of Jaimini are discussed elsewhere in this article.
The above is the simplest and most basic approach to a karaka. As the student progresses, he/she will come across a more in-depth approach to the concept of karakas.
In accordance with tradition, Somanatha Misra writes in Kalpalata (his vrtti on the Jaimini Sutras ) that Karakas are of many kinds ( Kaarakaa bahu vidhaah ) and then deals with the following
Five kinds of karakas
• Karaka
• Atmakaraka
• Swakaraka
• Dasakaraka and
• Bhavakaraka.
Among these five, Jain astrologers are said to favour Atmakaraka and Swakaraka . Atmakaraka is the most favoured planet in Jaimini system and its extensive use is a unique feature of Jaimini astrology.
Swakaraka is the most dependable of all in determining the results of a chart though one should study the chart with reference to other kinds of karakas too. I will deal with the „swakaraka‟ later. First let me define each of these karakas.
ATMAKARAKA
Atmakaraka is the planet that has advanced to the highest degree in any sign. I have written more on the charakarakas and atmakaraka elsewhere in this article.
DASAKARAKA
Dasakaraka is the planet whose influence is prominent during a particular dasa. The lord of the dasa (in a planetary dasa) is the single most influential planet for that particular dasa. But planets conjunct or aspecting or aspected by the dasa lord too influence the dasa. In a rasi dasa, planets in that rasi as well planets involved in aspects with the rasi also determine the results. All such planets become the Dasa karakas in some manner though the Dasa lord is the single most influential planet as the Dasakaraka. Simply put for most practical purposes Dasakaraka is the planet whose dasa is operating.
BHAVAKARAKA
Bhavakaraka is the significator of a house. Bhavakarakas are of two kinds:
Permanent ( Nitya ) and Temporary ( Anitya )
Nitya (Permanent) bhavakarakas :
The permanent significators for the twelve houses are fixed for all charts. Hence the name Nitya indicating „permanent‟. These are:
1 st house: Sun
2 nd : Jupiter
3 rd : Mars
4 th : Moon, Mercury
5 th : Jupiter
6 th : Mars, Saturn
7 th : Venus
8 th : Saturn
9 th : Sun, Jupiter
10 th : Sun, Saturn, Mercury, Jupiter
11 th : Jupiter
12 th : Saturn
Though the above list is supported by standard works such as Phala Deepika, Sarvartha Chintamani, Jataka Parijata etc, Parasara mentions only one planet as the significator for a house. According to the BPHS only Moon is considered for the 4th house, Mars for the 6 th , Jupiter for the ninth and Mercury for the tenth. Who is correct? Depending on the context both versions are correct. For instance Mars is the significator for the sixth if one is referring to enemies. But for other general indications Saturn is also appropriate.
Anitya (Temporary) bhavakarakas:
As already stated a temporary significator of a bhava (house) is a planet that acquires the power to signify matters governed by that house by virtue of its lordship, position, aspects etc in the chart under question. So the lord of the second house, planets in the second house and planets aspecting, all these become the bhavakarakas for the second house in a particular chart.
STHIRA & CHARA KARAKAS
Jaimini makes a distinction between Sthira (Fixed) and Chara (Variable) karakas.
STHIRA KARAKAS
As indicated by the name, these significations of a planet are fixed or permanent in nature. For instance Sun is the karaka for the soul, Moon for the mind, Mercury for the intellect, Mars for courage and Jupiter for children. These are to be learnt from other standard texts. Most texts agree on a majority of the common significations in a general way. The detailed natural significations for various planets, based on standard texts, are given in another article. Here I will confine myself to a few important differences.
Generally it is acceptable to take the Sun as the karaka for father and Moon for the mother. But certain authorities make a distinction between night and day births.
In Brihat Jataka, Varahamihira suggests that Sun is the significator for father and Venus for mother in case of day birth. Likewise Saturn is the significator for father and Moon for mother for night births. Parasara has something else to suggest though it has no distinction between day and night births. The stronger one between Sun and Venus is the significator for father, while the stronger one between Moon and Mars is the significator for mother.
One thing should be kept in mind though. In spite of considering Venus and Saturn too for the mother and father according to day or night birth the general signification of Sun for father and Moon for mother should not be ignored. It works well in practice.
Venus is the significator for „shukla‟ or „semen‟ and in that sense indicates the male fecundity factor. Likewise Mars is the significator for „sonita‟ and in that sense indicates the female fecundity factor at least. Perhaps this may have a bearing on the conception chart.
It is accepted by all that that Venus is the karaka for „beeja‟ (seed) and Mars for the „kshetra‟ (field), a concept that has been used by Mantreswara in calculating the „beeja sphuta‟ and „kshetra sphuta‟ in assessing the fecundity/fertility factor. The sphuta is calculated in a male chart by adding the longitudes of Sun, Venus and Jupiter. In a female chart it is done by adding the longitudes of Moon, Mars and Jupiter. Jupiter is the fixed karaka for children for all charts. Additionally Sun, Venus for males and Moon, Mars for females are taken by Mantreswara in accordance with the above mentioned logic. Parasara‟s suggestion too could be founded on a similar principle and could be useful in a different context. But for all general purposes SOME believe Varahamihira is more acceptable while the standard significations of Sun for father and Moon for mother should be kept in mind at all times.

Revelation on the Dilemma of Different Systems of Astrology

There are two different Zodiacal systems which are used in Astrology. Western Astrology uses Sayana type Zodiac (Tropical Zodiac) and the Vedic Astrology uses Nirayana type Zodiac (Sidereal Zodiac). Since there are two different systems being used confusion naturally arises as to which is to be used.

Some astrologers may consider one to be the true zodiac, the other to be in error. Some may consider both to be valid but to different degrees. Some may try to use both together. If we are unbiased, I believe that we can find examples of accurate astrological readings using either of these systems. This may depend more upon the practitioner than the system. Some say that the Tropical system is for westerners, as it was developed there, and that the Sidereal system is for Indians, as it originated from here. The method to predict is different in both the systems and Vedic astrology can give good and accurate readings even for westerners who believe in the Tropical system. Western astrologers can make sense of the Vedic Charts.

Meaning of Ayanamsa

When a Western astrologer says that the Sun is in Aries, he does not mean that the Sun is in the fixed stars of the constellation Aries. He means that it is in the First of a twelvefold division of the zodiac based upon the position of the Sun at the vernal equinox which is usually around March 21st. Similarly, when a Vedic astrologer says that the Sun is in Aries, he means the fixed stars, not the tropical division. The Sun usually enters the fixed star Ashwini around April 14th.Though both astrologers use the same terms, they refer them to different portions of the sky based upon two different ways of dividing the sky. The difference of approximately 23-24 days / degrees between the two systems is termed as Ayanamsa.

Importance of understanding the two Zodiacs

As Vedic astrology is sidereal and based on fixed stars, this means that the signs will change in the Vedic chart from what we find in the Western chart. A person with Taurus Sun sign in Western chart may find their Sun in Aries in the Vedic system. This shift of positions naturally causes some confusion, particularly for those who are not so familiar with Astrology. Hence it is crucial that we understand the two zodiacs and their differences so that we don't confuse one system with the other or try to judge one according to the standards of the other.

To understand this concept we have to visualize the motion of Earths path around the sun. There are a number of fixed stars which the sages have named (Ashwini, Bharani Revati). These constellations are called the Nakshatras and for all practical purposes it may be said that they occupy permanent or fixed positions in the sky. This circle is divided into twelve sections and starts with the first degree of Aries when the Sun crosses the vernal equinox (at equator). Due to the wobbling motion of the earth at the poles the sun does not cross the equator at the same time every year, but it shifts backwards at the rate of about 50.1 seconds per annum, 1 degree in 72 years, 1 sign in 2156 years, completing the circle of 12 signs in about 25,868 years. This backward movement is called "precession of the equinox."

The Sidereal zodiac (Vedic System) is probably the original zodiac historically. The zodiac was invented long before the time when the vernal equinox was in Aries (i.e about 2000 years ago when the sun entered Ashwini Nakshatra). It must have originally been based upon direct observation of the stars. When the sages spoke of the sign Aries, it must have been the fixed star (Nakshatra).

Origin of Astrology

Astrology came originally from India and its astrology has remained fixed throughout its long history. Ancient cultures within us, which maintained the continuity of their civilizations over thousands of years, would quite naturally have to reckon with the precession of the zodiac. This is why the ayanamsa is deducted from the Western chart to determine the positions in the Vedic chart.

Wonders and accuracy of the Systems of Astrology

Western astrology can be accurate. To analyze a Western chart the principles mentioned in Western Astrology needs to be applied. The degrees of a planet in a sign have a special meaning to read the charts. Vedic astrology considers the Sidereal zodiac to be more important as it has existed for over many thousands of years and also predictions using dasa system are based on the constellations. From my personal experience both the systems are correct and can give amazingly accurate results. I usually try to confirm the results from both the methods before deciding the outcome of the prediction.

There are said to be seven main chakras in all; four in our upper body, which govern our mental properties, and three in the lower body, which govern our instinctual properties. They are:

According to Vedic teaching all the chakras should contribute to a human's well-being. Our instincts would join forces with our feelings and thinking. Some of our chakras are usually not open all the way (meaning, they operate just like when you were born), but some are over-active, or even near closed. If the chakras are not balanced, peace with the self cannot be achieved.

Colors have been an important part of human history right since the ancient ages. Each color has its own distinct effect. Some colors encourage excitement, whereas others make a person angry and yet other colors give a person a feeling of peace and gratification.

From the ancient time 7 prime colors have been considered important. The 7 horses in the chariot of God Sun, represent the 7 colors or the 7 rays of light. A rainbow also contain 7 colors. These 7 colors are linked to the 7 chakras (energy centers) of our body. Each color is related to an individual chakra. The weakening of an individual’s energy center denotes the deficiency of that particular color in the body.

Click on the chakras to determine the colours that need to be activated in your body.
