Organic Grain Storage

Grain storage is the main problem of the farmers in the agricultural village of Sindh, Pakistan keeping the grain or other agricultural crops un- properly will deteriorate the quality and taste of the crops. Pest usually attacks grains and crops that causes the lost of freshness and good taste of it, Farmer’s were facing a lot of challenges on this matter.

Organic Grain Storage in Sindh, Pakistan

One of the Villages in the Sind Province of Pakistan had developed an Organic Grain Storage though this is not new method but it was not popularize in other areas. This storage keeps the freshness and minimizes the presence of pest with out using chemicals for a period of 3 to 6 months. It is made from mud, designed similar to pyramid for preservation purpose, it was proven by ancient people that pyramid or creating upper build up will somehow has preservation effects on the things being kept inside.

Construction of organic grain storage is not that costly and the amount of grain that you can keep will depend on you I mean it counts on the size of the storage you had constructed. This is a primitive method of organic grain storage no modern technologies needed here. They just mentioned when I asked the person visited this place share this story to me he said, “first they will fill the container with grain then cover up with a leaves of Neem tree, and a small hole down for taking out grains when ever they need it.

This kind of storage convenient for the farmer’s, as it mitigates the pest attack to the grain during storing and preserve the high quality of the crop as well.

Tips for Report Writing

I had collected some tips on report writing and I would like to put it here in my blog so that it will be visible to the readers. I had read a lot of tips but it seems all of those have the same outputs and so far, these are the sum up of among those I had gathered. I hope this will give some ideas to those individuals seeking knowledge on report writing. I got this tips from “yourdictionary.com” it mentions here that;

Tips for Better Writing

(1) Keep the tone of your writing positive.

(2) writes in an active voice instead of passive voice because, active voice gives impact to your writing and makes sentences easier to understand.

(3) Use transitions between paragraphs so that, the writing flows are unified. (4) Use different kinds of sentences, like compound, complex, interrogative, and others to make the reporting comprehensive. Try not to start them all in the same tone.

(5) Avoid using same words refers to thesaurus for similar meaning. This will make your report interesting.

(6) Make it concise and direct to the topic.

Tips for Good Writing

These tips are according to Phil Bartle Ph.D, a well known Sociologist; here are some tips for good writing;

(1) Keep it simple. Do not try to impress rather try to communicate. Keep the sentences short and direct to the point. Avoid going into a lot of details unless it is necessary. Just mention words that will contribute to the purpose of the writing.

(2) Use an active voice rather than passive voice. Active voice makes the writing smoothly and easy to understand.

(3) Good grammar and punctuation is important. Let someone proofread your writing, keeping in mind computer can not check all the mistakes, especially with words like “right, write” or “there, their” or “red, read”.

How to write a progress report

Working in the NGO is a challenging job especially for the new one ; report writing skill is one of the keys in acquiring a good position with a good salary as well. For those who intend to work in the field of NGO they have to enhance the writing skills to be able to prepare a better project report and this will be their edge.

I have done my research on how to write a report because, I wanted to improve my writing ability and I found out they have almost the same tips on writing which I’ll mentioning here in my blog. There are different kinds of reports but I’ll take the first one the Progress Report.

Progress Report refers to any routine progress write ups which can be done in a monthly, bi-monthly, quarterly, bi-annually or annually. This report is different from a situation report (sitrep), situation report merely indicates what had happened and what was done about it at the time of reporting.

According to Phil Bartle Ph.D, a well known Sociologist, the most important source of information about any project is the routine monthly progress reports, if they are written in a right way. The donors, the headquarter of the implementing agencies, the leaders in the target group, the authority monitoring the project and administering the donor’s fund, all need to know how well and how much the project activities led to reach the project goals and objectives.

The important differentiation of progress report is to determine between: the project activities (inputs), and the results of those activities (outputs) or, the effects on the target beneficiaries. Even though progress report differs from among format but, the general design is the presence of two major headings which are the (a) activities, and (b) results, for each project objective, bring out a section for (a) activities and, (b) results of those activities.

A good progress report is not just a descriptive activity report, but it must be thoroughly analyzed the result of those reported activities. The analysis must answer the enquiry of “How much the project objectives have been reached? So, since you are the resource person of the project you can go beyond just the description of the activities in your progress report.

Tips:

Always review the project objective before writing any monthly progress report. Project objectives can be found in the “Project Document”. For analytical factor of progress report, list down those objectives, each as a separate section with separate sub title, and make an analysis of how well the project current activities towards achieving each objective. Determined where the project objective have not been reached or if it is over reached, or any quantitative aspect of it, includes an explanation of WHY.

Shelter support to the IDP of District Jamshoro, Sindh, Pakistan

Oxfam GB ORG in partnership with SAFWCOwill implementing WASH and shelter support project. This is under the early recovery assistance to the IDP of SAFWCO DRR sector the project main objection is to contribute and assist on the recovery of flood affected families .Project intervention will focus on water, sanitation, hygiene (WASH) and shelter support in the returnee villages of District Jamshoro, Sindh, Pakistan. Target beneficiary will approximately 8,000 house hold and 300 of this will be put on the shelter support assistance as well.

Shelter support project is what the IDP needed most because some of those IDP were completely wash out, with this shelter support they can again built up what ever left in their houses. WASH project is indeed a great advocacy as it assists the basic needs and creates awareness on the sanitation and hygiene practices of the IDP.

There is a saying, " Man by nature has no satisfaction" we human being always finds something is missing or feeling incomplete. It's like when ever we see opportunity we sometimes think of consideration even though we had have enough opportunity in hands. Yes everyone looks for opportunity because good opportunity comes once in a life time.

Oxfam GB Pakistan Consultation meeting with my ORG

I’m glad I was present during the consultation meeting of my ORG with the Oxfam GB Public Health Country Representative by a person of Dr. Kausar Iqbal, Oxfam GB Pakistan is actively working in helping the flood affected families, they always make it sure that the partner NGO is working efficiently in implementing their funded project, and for certainty the vulnerable families will be able to have access to the facilities that they had provided.

March 10, 2011 Oxfam Novib Public Health Country Representative and her team visited the project site which is in District Dadu. Unfortunately I missed the trip because they left from the office earlier and I came a bit late. I hope next time I’ll be able to visit the project site as well.

My ORG visions, missions and objectives are clear enough to our Donor’s they keep working with us continuously, my ORG works are visible and ultra poor people are beneficiary the most. Project sustainability and quality are primarily considered during project implementation.

Construction of Latrines & bathing facilities in an IDP camps of District Dadu

Construction of latrines and bathing facilities in an IDP camps solve the excretion problem of internally displaced people (IDP) living in a camps of District Dadu somehow. It brings comfortability to have a proper place to do the call of nature shall I call it, because if your in a call for excreting it’s hard to ignore this you must give way anyhow considering camps has no any kind of latrine and water as well. It was indeed an answer prayer to the IDP as it helps those people avoiding possible diseases due to unhygienic living condition and no proper waste disposal too.

Projects such this kind has to be implemented properly and keeping it as one of the main focus aside from water, and food distribution.

Orientation of WASH-ON-ECHO Project, Sindh, Pakistan

Upon the completion of team Oxfam Novib-ECHOWASH project at last on February 28, 2010 Water Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) project for the 3 Districts namely, Thatta, Matiari and Khairpur Mir under the financial aid of European Commission on Humanitarian Aid & Civil Protection (ECHO) through Oxfam Novib in partnership with my NGO conducted a project orientation to the whole team. The General Manager of Disaster Disk Reduction (DRR) was the resource person; he welcomes every one on board and invited our CEO as our guest speaker and inspirational talks as well.

The primary objection of the project is to provide water, sanitation and hygiene facilities to the 17,000 flood affected families of Sindh province. Installation of hand pumps and water purification are under water supplement activities. Environmental cleaning, proper wage management, installation of pit latrines and bathing places are the main concerns of sanitation work plan. Personal hygiene and hygiene awareness campaigns are conducted by the Public Health Promoter to enhance the knowledge and awareness of the flood affected people of Thatta, Matiari and Khairpur Mir.

It was a fruitful event, DRR GM had brought up the projects title, target beneficiary, objectives, duration, responsibilities of public health promoter (PHP), public health engineer (PHE), introduction of Project District Manager, and clarification of other related issues to the projects during question and answer session.

The meeting lasted more or less 5 to 6 hours and every one concerns was addressed and cleared. The District Managers had finalized the staff and the PHP are now ready to go for the field works as well. Good luck to the whole team of Oxfam Novib-ECHO WASH project.

Temporary Learning Ceneter (TLC) healed my son mental depression

Mr. Khalid Masood a resident of UC Qazi Arif, Tehsil Mehar, District Dadu was one of the family experienced the worse flooding in the history of Pakistan. Mr. Khalid son Mansood had seen and experienced the actual tragedy during the inundation of the entire areas of their village. When the water suddenly flowing out from no where Masood together with his family were trying to save their life but Masood was extremely terrified and shocked that cause him to stumble on to the rock and hurt his head so badly, fainted and bleeding. Masood mother run after him took him into her lap and yelling for help but no one in a position to give them helping hand everybody is desperate. Masood Family managed to get into the safer town somehow.

After 15 days Mr. Khalid had managed some amount to bring his son to the Doctors for treatment the Doctor cured the physical wound but not the mental depression and the trauma he got from the tremendous flooding. Masood suffers from mental disorder that he keeps doing unusual activities like hitting his head to the wall and shouting saying save your life from the flood. His parents were worried and lost hope for the recovery of Masood suffering considering they are now a flood survivors and no enough money for the treatment.

October 15, 2010 my ORG with the financial help of UNICEF-EDUCATION implemented a project which is scaling up Temporary Learning Center (TLC) in IDP camps of District Dadu and Jamshoro. Mr. Khalid relay the story of his son to the TLC staff and gets the admission of Masood for this project

After sometimes of TLC participation Mr. Khalid observes his son is improving and getting well Masood starts to interact and interested in studying his lesson. Masood forgot the tragedy he had experienced his parents as well were so happy seeing the positive development of their son.

When the TLC project was about to end Masood Father had narrated the whole story to the TLC staff with his tears form his eyes remembering the hardest days in their life and appealing to my ORG and UNICEF EDUCATION he says, “Please don’t close the TLC, the learning activities conducted healed my son mental depression”.

Non food item (NFI) distribution to the flood affected people of Mehar, District Dadu

My ORG with the financial assistance of Oxfam GB distributed non food items among flood affected population of Meher Tehsil, District Dadu, approximately 3,000 families has been benefited.

The non food items contained kitchen utensils, blanket, and other basic necessities to be used by the IDP’s in their daily life activities. The IDP are blissful to have all those things as it helps them a lot considering that they had not able to safe things during the occurrence of flooding in their areas.

My ORG would like to thanks the endless efforts of Oxfam GB to provide financial assistance in implementing the relief intervention smoothly and successfully.

Temporary Learning Center (TLC) in the IDP Camps of District Jamshoro & Dadu

My ORG with the financial assistance of UNICEF-EDUCATION had implemented a project which entitled “Scaling up TLC in IDP’s camps in Sindh Province”. UNICEF has been our regular partner in working out on the humanitarian endeavors with in the Sindh Province specifically. The Scaling up of Temporary Learning Center in IDP shelters of Sindh, Province, aims to provide basic education to the 2,500 children of flood affected families of District Jam shoro and Dadu by establishing 50 TLC in IDP Camps in those two Districts.

It is one of an immediate response of UNICEF to the flood victims, during the project implementation; it was indeed a cherishment to the condition of those children somehow. The children were very happy and excited with activities they are involved with; they are interacting with the other children as they’re happily doing the school like activities.

Children are the one who’ve been severely affected indeed in this tremendous calamity and yet voiceless for their sufferings at least with this kind of intervention that addressed their basic rights of education it gave they hope in life.

I hope there will be a continuation program in Education for IDP’s camps in Sindh Province as the children specially is able to read and write. I believe education is one of the keys for development in the country.

Clean Drinking Water to the Flood Affected Families of Districts Thatta & Dadu, Sindh, Pakistan

Districts Dadu and Thatta are among those Districts have been inundated thousands of families affected and the internally displaced people are camping everywhere. My ORG with the financial supports of Community Development Program, Planning & Development Department, under Government of Sindh had implemented an immediate response to the flood affected families of Districts Thatta & Dadu. The main objectives of this project is to provided clean drinking water to the affected families living in the camps and villages of the above mentioned 2 Districts through installation of water filtration plant with in the severely affected community.

There are 45,000 families targeted as the beneficiary from among IDP’s living in the camps and villages as well. This projects has started on the October 2010 and the had been ended, it was 3 months project duration but my ORG and the Donor’s had renewed and extended the project duration to another 3 months in order to accomplished the targeted number of filtration plant to be installed.

The project had been very much helpful to the flood victims; they are able to have an easy access to clean drinking water considering the water quality of Sindh Province in particular is not drinkable without being purified and had avoided possible diseases can be found in non purified water.

Our CEO given away Roses today

Today is Valentines day as I arrived to the office I started to great my colleague of HaPPy Valentines!!.. My senior college told me that usually girls in our office a bit hesitant to say Happy Valentines to the male office colleague specially, I asked my senior why, he doesn't know the reason behind, for me this maybe Pakistan some of the people are not aware of sweet occasions like Valentines.

When I started to do my office routine works after few minutes I was delighted when I heard the voice of our CEO and I heard him saying Happy Valentines to each and everyone, when he is coming towards our area I saw him giving away sweet red roses to everyone, I really touched with how my CEO treated us he indeed a great leader, because to be a good leader you have to love the people working around you. He's such a humble and concern CEO.He himself has handed the roses to us, he was indeed a CEO worth remembering as he is kind, down to earth and always thinking in helping vulnerable communities in Sindh, Pakistan.

WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) project changes IDP life style, Sindh, Pakistan

District Jamshoro inundated area

Last August 2010 the greater part of Pakistan “unexpectedly” inundated, what I mean for “ unexpectedly” is that the flow of the water from the Indus river was dried for more or less 10 years, since, there was no water flowing in this site the people established houses on this site and resides in the riverside as well.

The inundation happened in just a few hours and lasted almost a year, millions of families are internally displaced, and, millions of crop, livelihood had been damaged. Some families who still have something to recover when the water subsided they gone back to their houses but those who are severely affected by the flooding, as their houses are completely gone with the flood they resides in the Camps, non functional institution, old building just to have place to live.

The local and international donors are now giving assistance to the IDP in the entire affected area of Pakistan. WASH Intervention is one of the immediate responses conducted by the Oxfam GB and my NGO is their partner in implementing the project effectively.

Water is a basic need of everyone and in the Sindh province especially the water quality is not drinkable with out purification. Under WASH project intervention their aim is to provide clean and drinking water in the IDP camps, water rationing through the use of truck to the IDP camps, water tanking by installing a portable tank in the IDP camps.


WASH Sessions

Under sanitation sessions they are carrying out activities which are concern on the Hygiene and sanitation awareness campaign among IDP like giving a demonstration regarding basic sanitation such as hand wash with soap after defecation, nail trimming, tooth brushing, cleaning their surroundings, and distribution of Hygienic kits among IDP camps in Sindh province, Pakistan.

During the implementation of the projects my NGO conducted an interviews how this WASH projects changes their lives, some of the beneficiary said, “It’s indeed a great help to them and it even changes their life into a healthy means as they become aware on the sanitation and Hygiene in their day to day life, they can even share those gained knowledge to the other family as well”.

My inspiration..My NGO

I had not been into NGO (Non Governmental Organization) before I mean to be employed in any NGO; this is so far my first experience. If we talk about NGO the first things come into our mind is the humanitarian work, yes definitely, it usually deals towards betterment of certain community in a certain society through humanitarian works intervention. This is how I define NGO’s based from the experienced.

Every project that my non profit NGO is undertaking it aims towards betterment of vulnerable people in a sustainable basis. As I had seen the tremendous situation of vulnerable community and the suffering of community woman I always feel blessed and thanks Allah from the deep of my heart and mind for all the blessings Allah showered to me. The physical impressions I had seen from the vulnerable people it gives me inspiration in my daily lives, it inspire me in a sense to work hard so that, someday somehow I’ll be able to share some of the blessings in a simple way or help them to have a profitable income to at least mitigate their financial suffering.

My NGO also inspires me a lot, our CEO is a self made man, and I had read the struggles he has been through to be able to establish a prominent NGO as my NGO now. Pakistan has hundred of NGO working in different geographical location in the country with different missions and visions as well, that’s why, it was indeed a blessing in disguise to get a first legitimate project funded by the international organization or shall I say to stand out from among those hundred of existing NGO right now. Despite of the trials and consequences along the way he’s NGO still remain the prominent one from the eyes of Local and International Organizations. I admire and salute our CEO transparency to help the poor people because, I’m saying this statement based from the implementation of every projects, he makes it sure that the beneficiary of the projects are the ultra poor people and keenly monitoring the proper implementations of every projects.

CIDA in partnership with Local NGO implement projects for IDP in Sindh, Pakistan

CIDA (Canadian International Development Agency) it was basically created by Canadian Government in 1968 to carry out foreign aids to the developing country specially and in collaboration with Canadian private and public organization as well as international to administer aid effectively. CIDA is now working almost around the globe within the broad context of humanitarian activities.read more..

Local and international Organizations are welcome to work as partnered with CIDA in implementing same visions and missions to help the developing country. CIDA’s program and projects, working with CIDA’s and other related information regarding CIDA’s are available in their websites.

CIDA has been working in Pakistan for quite long time and they had added Pakistan as one of their country in focus with in Asia Continent. Pakistan just recently inundated and put millions of people lives in a tremendous situation and internally displaced people are still squatting everywhere cause some of them had no place to go. It was indeed a devastating calamity that put some parts of Pakistan in a completely disaster zone. Because of inundation occurrences majority of the international donor’s together with local partners had been giving an immediate response focusing on the IDP’s concern.

CIDA is among of the Donor’s giving immediate aids to the IDP’s in Pakistan as a whole. Just recently CIDA had signed an agreement in partnership with the prominent NGO’s in Sindh Pakistan to implements projects under Agriculture and Mother and Child Health caring. Under Agriculture assistance CIDA together with the Local partner are giving seeds for small farmer for them to start farming activities and for Mother they are conducting a marital safety awareness session among IDP’s woman and including the Child health caring activities.

I would like to thanks CIDA for implementing projects in order to uplift the current situation of the IDP in Sindh Province specifically. I hope they will continuously assesses and monitor the basic needs of the people and keep on implementing projects that address to that necessity based from the research conducted.
