தல வரலாறு:

இப்பகுதியில் வசித்த வணிகர் ஒருவர், வியாபாரத்திற்காக அடிக்கடி மதுரை சென்று வருவார். மீனாட்சியம்மன் பக்தரான அவருக்கு குழந்தை பாக்கியம் இல்லை. மீனாட்சியம்மனிடம் தனது குறையைத் தீர்த்து அருளும்படி வேண்டிக்கொள்வார். ஒருசமயம் மதுரையில் இருந்து ஊர் திரும்பியபோது, வழியில் ஒரு சிறுமி யாருமில்லாமல் தனியே நின்று அழுது கொண்டிருந்தாள். அவளை பரிவுடன் விசாரித்தவருக்கு, குழந்தை இல்லாத தனக்கு மீனாட்சியே குழந்தையாக வந்ததாக எண்ணி மகிழ்ந்தார். குழந்தையை தன்னுடன் அழைத்து வந்தார். இங்குள்ள குளக்கரையில் குழந்தையை அமர வைத்துவிட்டு, நீராடச் சென்று திரும்பினார். அப்போது, குழந்தையைக் காணவில்லை. இதனால், மனம் வருந்தியவர் வீட்டிற்குச் சென்று மனைவியிடம் நடந்ததைக் கூறினார். இருவரும் தங்களுக்கு கிடைத்த குழந்தையும் சென்றதை எண்ணி உறங்கச் சென்றனர். அன்றிரவில் வணிகரின் கனவில் தோன்றிய அம்பிகை, தானே குழந்தையாக வந்ததை உணர்த்தினாள். மேலும், கற்றாழைக் காட்டில் ஓரிடத்தைச் சுட்டிக்காட்டி அங்கு தனது பாதச்சுவடு இருப்பதாகச் சொன்னாள். அதன்படி அங்கு சென்ற வணிகர், சுவடு இருந்த இடத்தில் மண்ணை பிடித்து வைத்து, கோயில் எழுப்பினார். பிற்காலத்தில் இவளுக்கு சிலை வடித்து கோயில் பெரியளவில் கட்டப்பட்டது. அம்பிகைக்கு முத்து மாரியம்மன் என்ற பெயர் சூட்டப்பெற்றது.

தலபெருமை

கன்னி அம்மன்: முத்து மாரியம்மன் நான்கு கரங்களில், உடுக்கை, கத்தி, சூலம், அக்னி ஏந்தி நின்றிருக்கிறாள். தலையில் அக்னி கிரீடம் உள்ளது. சிறுமியாக வந்ததால் இவளை கன்னித்தெய்வமாகவே பாவித்து வழிபடுகிறார்கள். எனவே, திருமண பாக்கியத்திற்காக தாலி அணிவிக்காமல், தாலிப்பொட்டு செய்து, அதை பாதத்தில் வைத்து பூஜிக்கின்றனர். சுற்று வட்டாரத்தில் உள்ள இருபத்து இரண்டு கிராம மக்களுக்குள் அம்பிகை, தாயாக இருந்து அருள்புரிகிறாள். இதனால், தாய்மங்கலம் எனப்பட்ட தலம் பின் தாயமங்கலம் என மருவியதாகச் சொல்கிறார்கள்.

பங்குனி மாதம் 15ம் தேதி காப்பு கட்டி விழா துவங்குகின்றனர். இதற்கு முந்தைய ஒரு நல்ல நாளில் கோயில் வளாகத்தில் கைப்பிடியளவிற்கு மண் எடுத்து வைத்து, அதையே அம்பாளாகப் பாவித்து தீபராதனையுடன் பூஜை செய்கின்றனர். இங்கு முதலில் பிடிமண் வைத்து வழிபாடு துவங்கியதன் அடிப்படையில் இவ்வாறு செய்கின்றனர். இதனால், விழா அம்பிகையின் அருளால் குறையின்றி நடக்கும் என்பது நம்பிக்கை. பங்குனி 19ல் பூக்குழி வைபவம் நடக்கும். விழா நாட்களில் அம்பிகை ஒவ்வொரு வாகனத்தில் புறப்பாடாவாள். பங்குனி 23ல் தேர், 24ல் பால்குட ஊர்வலம், 25ல் தீர்த்தவாரியுடன் இவ்விழா நிறைவு பெறும். நவராத்திரி விழா அம்பிகைக்கு விசேஷமாக நடக்கும். இந்நாட்களில் வரும் செவ்வாயன்று அம்பிகைக்கு 108 குட பாலபிஷேகமும், வெள்ளியன்று விளக்கு பூஜையும் நடக்கும். ஆடி, தை வெள்ளிக்கிழமைகளிலும் விசேஷ பூஜை உண்டு.

நேர்த்திக்கடன்:

அம்பிகைக்கு தானிய காணிக்கை செலுத்தியும், அங்கபிரதட்சணம் செய்தும், பால்குடம் எடுத்தும் நேர்த்திக்கடன் செலுத்துகின்றனர். குழந்தை பாக்கியம் பெற்றவர்கள் கரும்புத்தொட்டில் கட்டுகின்றனர். அம்மை நோயால் பாதிக்கப்பட்டோர் ஆயிரம்கண் பானை எடுத்தும், அக்னிச்சட்டி எடுத்தும் வழிபடுகின்றனர்.

பிரார்த்தனை

விவசாயம் செழிக்க, குடும்பம் சிறக்க அம்பிகையிடம் அதிகளவில் வேண்டிக்கொள்கின்றனர். பிரகாரத்திலுள்ள வில்வ மரத்தில் திருமண பாக்கியத்திற்காக தாலியும், குழந்தை பாக்கியத்திற்காக தொட்டிலும் கட்டுகின்றனர். வயிற்று நோய் தீர மாவிளக்கு எடுத்தும், கண் நோய் நீங்க கண்மலர் செய்து வைத்தும், அம்மை தீர அபிஷேக தீர்த்தம் பெற்றுச் சென்று சாப்பிட்டும் வழிபடுகின்றனர்.
