I haven't decided yet if she's there to be close to me, or because the chair is covered with a snuggly soft fleece, and the space heater is spitting out heat directly onto my Bug. I kinda think it's the latter! It's hard for me to believe that I brought her home over 2 1/2 years ago. When I first saw her, she was alone in a cage because according to NOAH, she didn't get along with other cats. She was a beautiful orange tabby. When I talked to her, she came over to the front of the cage, and allowed me to pet her. Her fur was so soft!! I read her chart and saw that she had been returned by her previous owners and had been on medication for anxiety. I knew that she would not be easily adopted, but I also knew that I wasn't sure if I wanted the responsibility and the cost of buying medication for her. I asked the staff if she was still on medication. They weren't sure. So I left and thought about her that night. I went back to NOAH the next day and found out that she was no longer on any meds. I knew then that she would be coming home with me. I've never regretted that decision, but in hindsight, if I had not adopted her, I would have missed out on so much love, laughter, and joy that she brings me every day. There is a part of me that sees the stories of cats that need to find a forever home and part of my heart and soul wishes that I could open my home to some of them. But then I look at my Bug, see how content and safe she seems to feel, and I know that bringing another cat into our world would not be fair to her. While I hope I have many more years with my Bug, I also know that the next time I adopt, I will be looking for a cat with some special needs, a cat that is not so adoptable as the cute playful kitten, a cat that will fill my heart and home with love in much the same way my Bug has.

Odd day today

So today I'm hanging out with Bug, and looking forward to attending a friend's wedding tomorrow. I decided that I want something cold for dinner. So I found a recipe for spicy peanut noodles that can be served hot or cold. As I was in the kitchen getting everything ready and prepared I had one of the Comcast Music stations on. So there I was, attempting a new recipe, enjoying the day, and feeling pretty good. Then Alan Jackson's song "Where were you when the world stopped turning" came on. From the very first time I ever heard that song, it has always brought up many memories and emotions. And it did today too. I stopped what was I doing and just listened to the song. I still feel lucky to have the friends that I do, a safe place to live, a job, and of course, my Bug. But I also feel sad that there is so much violence, cruelty and hatred in the world. So after the song ended, I put my noodles in the frig and then went and irritated Bug by forcing some love on her. I used fresh ginger for the first time today, and I think Bug likes it. She wouldn't stop licking my hand. I hope everyone has a great day.

My Bug

My Bug decided that she wasn't getting enough attention from me lately. Today, twice she came into the bathroom with me, went to her litter box, squatted like she needed to pee, but nothing came out. Even though I had already scheduled an appointment for next week for her annual check up, I called the vet, explained what happened, and they said that they needed to see Bug today. So, off we went. Now Bug has been to this vet twice before, once after I adopted her, and then again to gt her teeth cleaned. So I had an idea of how she acts at the vet's. That was NOT how she acted today. Now since today's appt was unexpected, I didn't spend a lot of time telling Bug what would be happening. Call me crazy, but I will not make that mistake again! When I picked her up to put her into the carrier, she fought me. Then on the way to the she cried, but thankfully no peeing. But it was how she acted once we got there that surprised me the most. The last time I took her in, she wanted to stay as close to me as possible during the exam. Today, she tried to jump off the table, she was shedding a lot, the vet commented on how big her pupils were, and she was shaking and her paws were sweaty (the vet's term). When the vet left to run the tests, Bug seemed to be trying to make herself as small as possible. I talked to her, and tried to pet her, but when I touched her, she turned away from me, and started staring at the wall. It broke my heart! I sat and wondered if these was the behavior that her previous owners saw that prompted them to put her on anti anxiety meds. If she acted that way at home, I would be tempted to put her on medication too, for her sake. The vet said that she did see a tiny amount of blood in her urine, which could be a couple of different things. She didn't see any bacteria, and she won't have the results of the blood work until Saturday. On the drive home, Bug lifted her head once when got into my parking lot, like she was beginning to smell familiar smells. Once we got inside, she checked everything out, then settled in on my lap. Looking at the paperwork the vet gave me didn't help any. Since Bug is 10 yrs old, they ran a "geriatric" panel of tests. they think my Bug is old!! Don't they know she's my baby Bug? I hope everyone has a safe and happy 4th!

Feeling patriotic

So, I just read a story about a man who lives in an apartment complex in Webster Texas. He has an American flag flying on his balcony. He has been asked to remove the flag, not because it violates the complex rules, but because it is "a threat to the Muslim community". Really? In America, someone sees the American flag as a threat? Perhaps those people are living in the wrong country! What is going on in this country when people can wave the Mexican flag on Cinco de Mayo. but the American flag can't be displayed? I'm feeling sad and angry because it seems like the very freedoms that people came to this country to enjoy, are the very freedoms that they are now trying to change! There's a part of me that is relieved that I won't be around in a hundred years to see what our great nation has changed.

I can't believe it will be 2 years this July 4th that Bug and I met. She still makes me smile every day with her playfulness and demands for love. The owner of the Clippers has a bi-racial girlfriend. If I understand things correctly, the girlfriend took a picture of herself with a black man and posted the picture online. The Clippers' owner, her boyfriend asked her not to post the pictures online or bring black men to the game with her. This conversation was a phone call that just happened to be recorded (apparently without the boyfriend's knowledge) and then the tape was released to the press. Now the media is in an uproar, the NBA has banned the owner for life, and is going to try to make him sell his team. For what? For a supposed private conversation he had asking his girlfriend not to do something? This was a (supposed) private conversation. He (as far as I know) has not danced around in a white sheet with the KKK. What happened to freedom of speech? Or is it now only freedom of politically correct speech? And what about people like Michael Vick, who tortured and killed innocent creatures, and is still allowed to make millions playing football? Yes, the owner of the Clippers may be racist. Now, granted, my views tend to lean towards the liberal side, but even so, it's still hard for me to wrap my brain around her logic. She is opposed to paying men and women equally for doing the same job. Her reasoning? According to her, if a woman makes as much money as a man, it will greatly decrease her chances of finding a husband, since men "prefer to be the higher earning partner in a relationship". (As if the only thing that all women dream of is finding a husband!) She also stated that women do not deserve equal pay because they "work fewer hours per day, per week, per year” and “place a much higher value on pleasant working conditions: a clean, comfortable, air-conditioned office with congenial co-workers.” Schlafly concluded that the best way to empower women "is to improve job prospects for the men in their lives, even if that means increasing the so-called pay gap." Please excuse me if I don't want that type of empowerment! I would hope that whoever I did choose to marry would want the best for me, including being paid fairly for the work that I do.

Another story that had me shaking my hear happened in Pakistan. I have not been able to find out exactly what happened, but from what I have been able to read is that in a town in Pakistan, there was some sort of confrontation between police officers and people in a neighborhood. The confrontation was over the electricity to the neighborhood being shut off. Not just to one house, but to the whole neighborhood. So at some point during this confrontation, the police officers felt threatened enough that they decided to actually arrest (as in take to the station and fingerprint) a 9 month (yes, 9 MONTH) old child. The charge was attempted murder. But wait, it gets better (or worse maybe). Not only was the toddler arrested and fingerprinted. Apparently they also booked the baby into some sort of holding facility, and bail was set. Really? Like the baby was a flight risk?? Hang on! Let me jump on my Big Wheel and flee the country! The baby even had to appear before a judge. The judge appears to be the only public official with any common sense, since the judge threw the case out of court, dismissed the charges and recommended an investigation and discipline for the police officers involved.

Closer to home, I had to actually go into the office last week, for a mandatory meeting. When I got home, the first thing I did was go in and use the bathroom. Normally my Bug follows me in and asks (ok, demands!) attention. But she didn't do that. So I finished, and came out of the bathroom. Who do I see up on the kitchen counter, staring right at me to make sure I saw her? Some cutie patootie orange kitty! That's like only the third time I've ever seen her up there. And she jumped down as soon as she knew that I had seen her, like she had made her point. She then spent the rest of the evening snuggled in on my lap. I think she missed me while I was gone.

Hard to believe

It was a year ago today that a dear friend of mine passed away. The zoo killed a 2 year giraffe, because of concerns about inbreeding. According to the article, whatever birth control methods can be used on giraffes can also cause damage to their internal organs. The article goes on to say that several other zoos in Europe were willing to take this giraffe, but those offers were declined. There was also an offer from the private sector to pay the zoo $68,000.00 to give the giraffe a home elsewhere. That too was declined. The reasons stated in the article for declining these offers was that the zoo was worried about the conditions that the giraffe would be living in at some other place. So, this morning, the zoo killed a young healthy giraffe with a bolt gun. I'm not sure what that is, but it doesn't sound pleasant. The zoo then decided to allow visitors, including children, watch as the zoo skinned the giraffe, and fed it to the lions. Now, I know that lions eat giraffes in the wild. I'm a meat eater, so I understand that animals get killed every day for food. I don't like those facts, but I can't deny them. I guess what really bothers me in this case, is that there was no real reason for the giraffe to die. The lions would not have starved if the giraffe wasn't fed to them. There were places that would have taken the giraffe and allowed it to live. Why kill it? Allowing children to see the giraffe being skinned and then fed to the lions, I don't know. As a kid, even as an adult, I don't want to see that. Would viewing that make the children more sensitive or less sensitive to the fact that animals are living creatures? I don't know. But this story bothered me. A lot. Now I need to go give my Bug some extra cuddles.

Super Bowl Sunday

I hope everyone has a great Super Bowl Sunday. I will be going to a friend's house. I've discovered that my Baby Bug doesn't like it when I get too excited and yell at the TV! She tends to go into the other room. She still gets nervous sometimes when she hears unexpected noises but I think she's also starting to trust that she's safe here. She has started coming out to the living room while I'm working and starts rolling over on her back and meowing at me. I've cautiously tried to rub her belly, and she's not overly keen with that, so I'm guessing that when she's meowing at me, she's telling me that I need to adore her and tell her how cute she is. So of course I do. I'll be rooting for the Broncos today. I've had fun with people at work the past couple of weeks who are rabid Seahawks fans. So tomorrow at work, it's either going to be a great day for me, or I am going to get so much ribbing all day....But either way, I'll enjoy it. Go Broncos!!

A lazy Sunday

So, I am "working" today, though there is about 15-20 minutes between calls. This is really confusing my poor Baby Bug. She feels if I'm not talking on the phone, then I should be adoring her. I decided to open my balcony door for her. It's still a little chilly, but she does like the fresh air. Today she's decided the thing to do is to go out on the balcony until she gets cold. Then she comes in and jumps on my work desk and settles in for some snuggles. Once she warm, off she goes to the balcony again. Then back to my desk. She's done this 5-6 times already. She has a bright pink bandage on her front paw from where they gave her IV fluids. I've tried to take it off, but Bug is too busy checking things out to make sure everything is still here. Since she couldn't have any food after midnight last night, when I let her out of the carrier, she went straight to her food dish. Once I make sure she's settled in, I'm going to go out and get some fresh grass for her. As the vet tech was going over the after care instructions, she told me that Bug did fine after they put up a little privacy curtain in her cage. That way she could peek out, but still have her own space. And I'm sure she tells this to everyone, but she said that Bug was everyone's favorite today. She said Bug was so cute, and just has this mischievous, devious look in her eye like she's always up to something. She said Bug was cooperative and gentle with everyone. That's my girl! I just dropped her off at the vet. This was the first time she's fought getting into her carrier. I trust my vet, and know that physically she'll be fine. But I still don't like the fact that she's in a strange place with strange noises, smells and people, in a cage, alone, probably thinking that she's been abandoned again. I'm already wishing that she would come trotting out of the bedroom, jump into my lap, and snuggle in for a nap! 3:30 is when I go pick her up, and it can't come quickly enough! Since they have one of those icky dog creatures, I spent the nights at their house, so Baby Bug was alone at night. Last night was the first night I slept at home for a while. So this morning before my alarm went off, my Bug decided it was time for me to wake up. She jumped on me, and then started licking my face. I started petting her, and when I stopped, she started nudging my hand so I would pet her some more. And as if my face wasn't wet enough from her licking, as I was petting her, she started drooling. She's much nicer to wake up to than an alarm clock! She's not happy now since there are loud thunderboomers going on. She doesn't like thunder at all! According to the article, denying them a permit would violate the ADA. Now I know that some people who are legally blind might be able to see well enough to aim and shoot at something. But someone who is blind? That thought makes me uncomfortable. Where is the line between political correctness and common sense? We are required (at least in theory) to pass a vision test to get a driver's license. Is it too much to ask for someone to pass a vision test to own a firearm? At what point do the rights (and perhaps safety) of the many outweigh the rights of the not quite so many? It took her until Wednesday to start purring again, but now she's back to her usual playful self.

This past weekend I played cards with some friends. Someone mentioned that she thinks about the condition of the planet, and what shape it will be in for future generations. Someone said that he does not believe that humans have an impact on the planet, and that there is no proof of global warming. And it is also his belief that no matter what we do, we can't change the world. His statement was that he knows he's not that important. My view is that I may not be able to change the world, but maybe I can make a change in my little part of it. I realized just how different my view of the world is from his when I used Baby Bug as an example. I didn't change the world by adopting her. But I did change HER world. And by changing her world, I also changed my own world. His response was "it's just an animal". I'm always a little sad when I realize that someone hasn't known the love and joy that I share with animals. And I also believe that if no one does anything to change, or take responsibility for trying to make things better, then of course nothing will change. Do I think I can change the world? No. Do I think that if everyone does a little bit to change their part of the world that change will occur? Yes.

Tuesday for Baby Bug and me

I think Baby Bug and I have survived the dreaded Tuesday. It wasn't easy for either of us!

It started this morning. My shift starts at 10:30, and a co worker was nice enough to pick me up. She starts at the same time. We didn't discuss what time she would be picking me up, other than she would text me when she was on her way. That's cool. From my place to work, with traffic it would take at the most 30, maybe 40 minutes. At the most. Usually closer to 20 minutes. So in my head, I'm thinking if she picks me up sometime between 9:15 and 9:30, that would get us there in time to get settled in, and start work at 10:30. Apparently she had a different idea. I get a text at about 8:30, saying she's on her way. Then another text about 8:45 that she's downstairs waiting for me. Really? 8:45? OK. I sadly lock Bug in the bedroom with her food, water, and litter box, and tell her goodbye.

We get to work at about 9:10, an hour and 20 minutes before we have to start!! So there I am, wasting time at work, when I could have spent another 30 minutes with Bug. Ok. Deep breath. I'm an adult, she did me a big favor and in my head, I know that Baby Bug is safe.

So, we start work. I can't remember the last time we were so busy! Calls holding all day until a 10 minute break at about 6:15, then it starts up again. But, on the bright side, it did keep my mind off my girl. So after work, I check my messages. There's a message from my landlord. During the painting, they put new doorknobs on the doors, and the lock on my door was so old, they couldn't line it up with the new doorknob. So guess what? They rekeyed my apt. It is now after 7:00pm, the office closes at 5:00. So I leave a message on the emergency maint number saying that I just got off work and that I would be home between 7:30 and 8:00. So during the drive home, I'm checking my messages. Nothing. So, then I'm hoping that the maint guy will be waiting for me at my apt. When I got home, no maint guy, and no msg. Only Baby Bug crying at me thru the window. Can my heart break any more? Turns out it can, because when I wasn't coming inside to her, Bug tried to squeeze thru the window to me, and got her head stuck for an awful minute or so. I kept thinking, I can't do anything for her, since I can't move the window. Thank God that she was finally able to free herself!! Talk about feeling totally useless!!

So now, the adult side of me is nowhere in sight. The only thing I want to do is get inside my apt. I call my friend Dave's house to see if he can come break into my apt (which he's been able to do before). But his wife lets me know that he's camping. So she calls another friend Matt to see if he could come help. So while I'm waiting for Matt to call, the maint guy comes (FINALLY!) with my new key. I got into my apt, let my friends know how thankful I am for them, and that life is good again.

I let Baby Bug out, and she of course yelled at me, then proceeded to check out the entire apt to make sure that everything is back to normal. I have a feeling it was a pretty stressful day for her too, since I found 2 spots in the bedroom where she threw up, and she's thrown up again since I've been home. She's restless, and can't seem to relax. Normally, she will settle in on my lap after work. Tonight, she's been jumping up, staying for just a few minutes, then she jumps off again. She still seems to be checking everything out. I am so thankful for friends who were willing to come help, and that Bug and I have the next 2 days off to recuperate from today!

Not my favorite thing to hear. But at least a coworker is willing and able to pick me up and drop me back home, so I get to avoid taking the bus. Yippee! So, while I'm still not happy about having to go into the office, I realize that it's only one day. I was doing ok with it. Until today. Today, as I'm taking my garbage out, I see a note on my door left by my landlord. According to the note, they are going to be repainting my building. Cool so far. The repainting is going to be done on Tuesday. Still good, since I won't get home until after 7 anyway. Then I see that during the painting, they have to prop open my apt door to allow the paint to dry, and that all pets should be secured somewhere so they can't get out. Poor Baby Bug. Not only will I not be home on Tuesday, but now she also has to be locked in the bedroom all day! And it's not even a day when I'm working from home, so can let her out as soon as the painters are done, or go in and talk to her during the day. I am NOT looking forward to Tuesday at all!! Please send some positive thoughts to my Bug on Tuesday so she'll know she's still loved! That means that Baby Bug has been alone more than she's used to. So when I do get home, most times, she is trying to climb on me while I'm still trying to sit down. So I think she missed me a little bit. So today I went to the pet store and got a water fountain, since Bug seems to prefer to drink moving water, and a cat mint plant. The plant's instructions said to water it 2-3 times a week, and give it fresh air. So, I watered it (it had wilted somewhat in the hot car) and put it on a plate on my counter, and started doing other things. I turned around and who do I see up on the counter, trying to eat the plant? In the year that I've had her, I've seen her on the counter maybe 3-4 times. But she sure smelled that plant and went right after it! I put it on the floor, and she was sticking her nose into as far as she could, rubbing her chin on the plastic holder, and then rolling around on her back. I think she liked it. I put the fountain together, added some water (I threw in a couple ice cubes) and turned it on. She came right over to investigate, and after watching it for a few minutes started to drink. So I think I did good for her 1 year anniversary. Now she's on her scratching post by the balcony door, soaking up the sun, and watching the world go by. So I think her life is good again.

Happy July 4th

It's hard to believe that it's been almost a year since Baby Bug came into my life. So I fix my dinner, sit down and settle in with Bug. Soon after I sit down, I hear Safeway knocking on my door. Only about 30 minutes early. So I throw Baby Bug on her head, get up, bring in my groceries. As I start to put things away, I realize that there are several frozen dinners in there that I did not order, and the frozen dinners that I did order, as well as some beef and chicken that I ordered are not here. First time it's ever happened. So, now my dinner is cold, I haven't see much of the game, Baby Bug is extremely puzzled and pissed that I am once again at my work desk on the phone. I've been on hold with Safeway for over 20 minutes now. I'm not amused. But on the bright side, this is the first time I've ever had a problem with them. I have a feeling that I'm not the only one calling Safeway tonight. And how was your evening?

Feeling like a proud mama tonight

So, just to remind you of Baby Bug's history, as told to me by the wonderfully great people at NOAH, she was adopted and returned by at least 3 previous owners before I met her. During that time, she was declawed, put on anti-anxiety meds by at least 2 of those other owners. So fast forward to tonight. My apartment complex has smoke alarms in all the apartments. The alarms are wired into the Bothell fire department, so when one of the alarms go off, a fire truck soon arrives. So the alarm goes off tonight, and as always is loud and annoying. Baby Bug did wake up, and was uneasy. Then the fire trucks arrived. Since my windows were open, it was easy to hear them. Baby Bug tried to settle in on me, and did for a while. Now I'm not sure if there was a problem with the alarm or what, but the firemen stayed longer than usual and there was more noise than usual. Then it sounded like someone dropped a large metal pipe out in the parking out. It startled me and Baby Bug. She sat up, and I thought sure she would run into the bedroom, where it's quieter. So imagine my surprise and pride when she went over to the open balcony door, and actually went partway outside to investigate!! She was so brave!! It made my heart so happy! She just keeps finding ways to do that! I thank her previous owners often for giving me the chance to meet this wonderful creature!

Baby Bug's visit to the vet

So Baby Bug survived her visit to the vet. Thank you Uncle Dave for playing chauffeur! Unlike her last visit, she did not go potty either in her carrier, or at the vet's. We're home now, and she is still letting me know that she's not happy with me. But I think (hope) that making it to the vet and home again without any potty issues is a sign that she knows that she has found a forever home, and that I wasn't taking her there to dump her off. The vet said that it wouldn't hurt to get her teeth cleaned, but it also wouldn't hurt to wait a while either. They took blood and I will get those results tomorrow. She has gained 3 lbs and is up to 12.2 lbs now! So I guess she's eating something! lol Please send some good thoughts for good blood work. But I do have to admit to making a special trip to get Baby Bug some fresh wheat grass. And I was late this morning because as I was trying to get ready to leave for an appointment, some cutie with orange & white fur thought it necessary to try to get on me every time I sat down so she could get snuggles. I also received an email from Baby Bug's Uncle Dave saying he would be in my neighborhood on an "emergency humanitarian mission". He and Bug's Auntie Teri are her paper suppliers. Bug loves her paper and it was like a kitty Christmas today due to a new supply of paper that was dropped at our door. Thanks Uncle Dave and Auntie Teri! Since I was unavoidably detained this morning, I missed the bus I wanted to catch. So I caught the next one. We were traveling down Bothell Way when we come to a stop in an area that there's no intersection or lights. I look out my window, and see a Bothell police car in the other lanes, and he had traffic stopped. So I'm reaching for my phone, thinking there was an accident, and that I would be even later than I originally thought. Then I notice people on the bus aren't upset, or grumbling. Some are even smiling and pointing. So I look again. We weren't stopped for an accident. The cop and 2 women were escorting a mama duck and her 6-8 adorable ducklings across the busy street. We were stopped for about a minute, then back on our way again with everyone seeming to be just a little bit happier. I'm home now, the sun is out, and I have a very loved, very tuckered out kitty snoozing on my lap. It was a very good day off!

Happy Sunday

So, I am finally working from home again. I do have to work the weekends for a while. But at least I'm home! I think Baby Bug really did miss having me around. I started working from home again on Friday. She has been like glue trying to be on me whenever I'm sitting down. She is making me feel quite loved, the sweetie!

I read an article about school officials in Portland Oregon talking about how teachers should not mention peanut butter and jelly sandwiches in class. Why? Apparently talking about sandwiches is a form of racism, since some students may not eat sandwiches but eat "torta" or pita instead. Really? Now we can't even talk about different types of food without offending someone?

If you google peanut butter + racism you will see a few articles about this.

Have a great day!
