I asked my son the other day, “Son, what do you think I’m an expert at?” He replied, “You are an expert at creating something from nothing.”

What he meant was; His dad has struggled for years to find out how to make money online and even in my sleep, all with little or no money to invest. Yes, I did it the hard way and No money wasn't even the hardest part.

The most difficult part was, I didn’t have a coach or mentor to show me the way. In fact, I failed for years because I didn’t know how. But you don’t have to.

There are 4 reasons why entrepreneurs and home business owners fail:

They don’t have the right mindset
They don’t know how
They don’t how to market their product or service
They don’t know how to sell

The good news is, all of these skills can be learned so you can prosper! That’s where I come in. As a motivational speaker, author and business coach, I have studied hundreds of high achievers and millionaires.

I’ve even read over 300 books in the area of success and personal development and the ONE THING that almost every high achiever has in common is that they all believe in the power of a having a coach.

How to Become an Awesome Employer

Being an employer is not an easy job. As a matter of fact, it has been one of the toughest positions that I have ever held. However, after 13 years of being an employer, I have learned how to be an employer that my employees love to be around.

A phone call that I received the day that I wrote this blog post, inspired this post. One of my relatives called me about an uncomfortable situation that she encountered with her boss. In fact, as I listened to her tell me what happened, I immediately recognized a lack of leadership in her employer.

I coached her through how to restore her relationship with her employer and how to keep peace until she can find another job.

My Journey as an employer has been filled with negative and positive situations. However, the most important thing is the fact that I have grown as a business leader and I have learned how to be an Awesome Employer. In fact, I have learned how to lead effectively and show people that I really care about them.

As I was preparing this blog post, I asked my Face book friends to describe an Awesome employer and here are some of the responses that I received:

They should be a people person on some level
Understanding but firm and not show favoritism.
Love what they do
Always be willing to do any task you expect them to do
Show kindness 365
Be an advocate for your employees, especially in times of trouble. An employee wants to feel like his or her boss has their back at all times
Be sure to tell employees when and what they do good and Thank them often.

I thought those were great responses and they are all so true. If you do not love people, being a boss is going to be a place of misery for you; understanding the people that you lead is very important along with being firm and not showing favoritism. Most of all, you must love what you do or your employees will notice it and they will not enjoy working for you.

After years of supervising employees, with the help of reading many of John Maxwell leadership books, I have discovered many ways of becoming an Awesome Employer.

Today I am going to share with you, 7 -Steps to becoming an Awesome Employer:

You must develop the leader within you by reading leadership books (see recommended resources)
Show people that you care for them.
Get to know your employees. Find out what they love.
Be a good listener
Lead by example. Model the behavior that you want to see.
Praise your employees, it just might make their day.
Allow them to communicate openly to you with respect and be sure that you establish reasonable personal and professional boundaries.

Is This the Year You Decide to Finally Start Your Business?

Here are some questions to ask before you start your own business:

I. Would my product or service add value to the market? Let us face it: the start-up phase in starting a business is time consuming. You will find yourself questioning whether you have made the right decision, especially when the hours are long and the initial profits (if any) are lean. Starting a company from the ground up is no get rich quick thing. As the business owner, you are also the number one salesperson for your organization. Your enthusiasm for your product or service- whether it is health products or international business consulting- is often the difference that brings purchasing customers, lands deals and attracts investors. It is unwise to start down the path of entrepreneurship unless you have got a zeal that will get you through rough patches and keep you interested long after the initial enthusiasm has faded.

II. What is my IQ (I Quit) Level? Whether it is resigning from your day job or opening a store front office, nothing about starting a business is for the faint of heart. This is not for the employee minded or those looking for a steady paycheck. Business consultant Deborah Black-Francis tells aspiring entrepreneurs that you have to "Take action, and be willing to jump off the cliff and figure out how to fly on the way down." There is no guarantee of success, or even a steady paycheck. If you are risk-averse, entrepreneurship probably is not the right path for you. Stick with your day job.

III. Am I an effective decision maker? No one else is going to make decisions for you when you own your own business. You can not call mommy. Consider how you might handle these early decisions: Do I incorporate? Do I get use a Corporate Tax Id or my Social Security number? Do I use my hard earned savings or get a loan? Do I work from home or do I purchase office space? Do I hire employees? Do I pursue high-end clients or sell to the masses? Do I advertise? Keep in mind that the decision-making process only gets more complicated as time goes on, once you have employees or clients depending on you. The choices you make can lead to success or failure, so you must feel confident in your ability to make the right call.

IV. Am I willing to be The CEO, Manager & Employee? While a corporate employee focuses on a special skill or role within the larger corporation, a business owner must contribute everything to the business. Start up entrepreneurs in particular must be versatile and play a number of roles, from chief salesperson and bookkeeper to head marketer and bill collector. If juggling many roles does not suit you, entrepreneurship probably will not either. The recent economic downturn has made it more important than ever for business owners to have a good working knowledge of their companies' finances. While you will undoubtedly learn much on this topic from actually doing business, the more knowledge you have in advance, the better prepared you will be.

V. Will I go the distance? Working six days a week, not on a 9 to 5 schedule, losing touch with friends, abandoning old hobbies and interests and not making time for loved ones can quickly lead to doubts and fears, in the midst of starting up- and ultimately to business failure. "No one wants that." This is what happens to many entrepreneurs across the country. Many first time entrepreneurs says they did not know any better when they started their first company, they worked as hard as possible, for as long as possible, until their creativity, enthusiasm and energy were sapped. By sticking to better habits to maintain work/life balance, such as not working on Sundays, making time for hobbies such as reading and watching a good movie, and building close ties with other business owners through a faith-based support network life as an entrepreneur can be rewarding and most importantly fun.

Take some time to seriously answer these questions, do some soul-searching, and then if you think you have what it takes, go for it.

Does Your Business Have a Tumblr Page?

As I write this blog post, I reflect on how I used to actively blog on my Tumblr page, then I stopped blogging at Tumblr to build my word press blog.

In fact, I decided to stop using the Tumblr blog, because it just did not seem to be a popular social media platform. However, I loved having a Tumble page, because of all the cool apps and the option to schedule post and link your blogs to your Tumblr page.

Recently I received The Website Magazine in the mail and I stumbled across an article that was titled, "Tumblr 10 billion strong!" I thought, Wow! Thank God I did not delete my Tumblr page. In the article the author wrote: " Tubmlr, the internet's leading micro blogging website, reached it's 10 billionth post in early September 2011.

In the early part of September, Tumblr even surpassed WordPress in both page views and revenues, despite having fewer bloggers and visitors." The article also indicated that, major media companies such as: Rolling Stone, New Yorker and NPR are utilizing Tumblr to grow their audience.

Business 101: What inspired you to start TheCEOMamma Network?

Tamyka Washington: I was inspired to start TheCEOMamma Network as an extension to TheCEOMamma Blog. As my readership began to grow, I would often receive regular emails from women entrepreneurs thanking me for the information I was sharing in my posts and how much it was helping them with their business.

I began to recognize that an even better way for me to empower more women entrepreneurs was to create a space exclusively for them to connect, build and grow together, which is TheCEOMamma Motto.

Business 101:I have watched your network grow into such an empowering network. In fact, you are paving the way for many others that may want to start their own online network. What advice would you give someone that wants to start their very own online network?

Tamyka Washington:The advice I would give someone that wants to start their own online network is to first, understand the time commitment and work it will require to build it. When I first started, for weeks, I spent time personally inviting each of my Facebook friends whom I thought would bring value and benefit from being a part of my network.

You also need to know that it helps to have followers already who like, trust and believe in what you are doing to come along and support you in spreading the word and attracting new members. The network you design should be focused on creating community and meeting the needs of its members. Also realize that you are the force behind the network and it is primarily up to you to make sure there will be ongoing activity, value, growth and moderation.

Business 101: Have you invested any of your own money to launch or maintain TheCEOMamma Network?

Tamyka Washington:In the beginning back in 2009, I started TheCEOMamma Network using the free Ning platform which has recently converted to a paid service. Soon after, I invested in purchasing my own domain name to further brand the network. Early on, I did choose to monetize the network by offering affordable paid advertising options to members in combination with hosting Google Ads.

So, the total amount of monetary maintenance of my network is paid for via those avenues and any additional required investment is solely that of my time.

Business 101:What is your ultimate goal for the network?

Tamyka Washington: My ultimate goal is to continue to provide a safe, valuable resource filled community for women to network with one another and learn how to build and grow a profitable business online.

I’m also committed to expanding with the growth of our current members by providing small business services, partnership and income opportunities as well as an Inner Circle Mentoring Program, launching in early 2012, for the women who would like more personalized coaching and training to reach new heights within their business.

Business 101:If you could do it all over again, would you do it differently?

Tamyka Washington: If I had to do it all over again, I don’t think I would do anything differently other than maybe establishing a dedicated team to help with marketing, and membership care.

Tamyka Washington: I must say, our network is known for a number of genuine relationships and business partnerships being established because of the integrity and level of professionalism amongst our members. Mentoring and Coaching 101

One of the things that I love most about being an employer, business consultant and a parent, is the opportunity to be a coach or mentor. In fact, if you are in a position where you are leading others, you have an opportunity to mentor those that follow you.

Dictionary.com defines a mentor as a wise trusted counselor and a teacher. Mentor is also defined as a senior sponsor or supporter.

To assure that you are successful in the area of mentoring, your employee(s), team or clients they must like you! If they do not like you, they will not be willing to learn from you and this will slow down the mentoring process.

This is why it is vital that you build a relationship with anyone that that you mentor or coach!

My experience with mentoring and coaching

I have been an employer for 13 years and I have learned that when your team knows that you care, they will follow your mentor ship. Moreover, I have learned that, when you have an employee that may not like you for whatever reason that they may find, it will be very difficult to mentor that employee.

However, when you have an employee, client or team member that likes you, respects you and wants you to pour your experience and knowledge into them; that will be the best mentoring experience that you have ever had. In fact, it will give you the fuel to become better at mentoring and coaching others!

Be selective at whom you mentor or coach

As I write this blog post, coaching and building teams is very popular today. In fact, almost everyone needs a business coach or a coach to help them succeed in some area of their life. What ever your platform for mentoring or coaching may be, choose people that are committed to you equipping them.

The book that is inspiring me to become a better mentor

In December 2010, I stopped by a book store at the local mall and I browsed through the business book section. I discovered a book written by John Maxwell titled, " Mentoring 101."

I purchased the book and I have been using the book as a reference as I need inspiration to become a better mentor or employer. I must add that the book has been a great resource and teaching me so much about mentoring others.

How to Get Rid of Nervous Energy Before Public Speaking

According to Ed Wolmuth, author of , The Overnight Guide to Public Speaking, "stage fright is normal, and for some people it is actually exhilarating. Your big problem is nervous energy, because that shows. And if you let it get out of hand, it can seriously detract from your performance."

Public speaking is among the top fears in the world. When I was growing up in school I world pray that the teacher would not call me to speak. In fact, when I heard my name called, a rush of nervous energy would rise up in me and cause me to freeze up.

I was forced to get rid of a fear of public speaking when I entered the business world. In business, you must be a confident communicator if you want to get results. So, throughout my journey of being an employer, I developed my speaking skills and learned how to reduce the nervous energy when it was time to speak in front of groups or at my employee meetings.

Can you imagine listening to a boss that was nervous at a meeting? People follow confident and effective communicators. So, it's time to get rid of that fear and the negative energy that causes you to walk in fear!

Wolmuth recommends the following.....

"Go to a toy store and buy a kid's rubber ball that's large enough to cover most of your palm. On the morning of your talk, start walking around with the rubber ball in your hand, squeezing it vigorously all the time. Now shift it to your other hand and do the same thing. Now back again. Keep it with you constantly until it's time to leave for the function. Then put it away. Its job is done.

"From then on, the minute you feel the nervous energy start to mount, just think of the rubber ball. Curl your fingers around it and give it a good mental squeeze. That'll do the trick. I don't know why, but it works for me, and it works for anyone I have taught it to."

Two Ways to Tap into Your Creative Mind

1. Quiet the Mind with Meditation. According to Dr. Dyer, this is a great way to give yourself access to your creative mind and eliminate unnecessary, unwanted and superfluous thoughts.

2. Using Positive Proclamations. Dr. Dyer wrote: " Rather than allowing your thoughts to insist that something is wrong or missing, retrain your conscious creative mind with beliefs such as these:

I have discovered that daily proclamations or affirmations keep you focused in your mind and it attracts to you want you really want and not what you don't want.

Have your own style.I was recently watching the BET Music awards and I noticed how every singer had their very own style. Moreover, having their very own style caused them to stand out from one another and for some singers, standing out caused them to receive a music award.

A salon that stood out from the crowd. Six months ago one of my customers referred me to a hair salon. This hair salon definitely stood out from the crowd. Upon arrival, the customers are greeted in a warm manner and offered a glass of water or soda. I have been to many hair salons, but never a salon that offered the customers "Free" refreshments. In fact, in most hair salons, you must buy your drinks from a vending machine.

Share Your Business Journey With your Children

I started my childcare business in my home when my daughter was only three and my son was six years old. I am still sharing my business journey with my children. In fact, we decided that this summer my daughter would spend 3-days a week at my childcare center with me. She helps with the children, food service, housekeeping and even goes with me on my weekly business errands.

Now my son (20 years old), prefers to do maintenance work, he does not want to help with the children. He prefers to help keep up the outer appearance of the building including; washing the van, sweeping the parking lot or helping to wax floors when needed.

I was inspired to write this blog post, because I recently caught a glimpse of my daughter (15 years old) watching me while I was reading email several days ago. I thought to myself, wow my daughter gets to experience what it is like to operate a business and I am excited to be the one to teach her.

It is my goal to continue to show my children how to operate a business and my dream is that they would be successful business owners someday. Do you have children? If so, I hope that you are planting seeds of entrepreneurship in your children at an early age by inolving your children in your business endeavors.

Ways to Share Your Business Journey With your Children:

Take your teenagers to networking events with you
Place entrepreneur books and magazines where your children can see them
Ask your children for their business advice

During the summertime, I love to take vacations. Doing State of the Art Business

This year I set a goal to take my business to another level. My goal is to do business on the state of the art level. I believe that there is always another level to go to in business. In fact, doing business on the state of the art level simple means that you are doing business on the highest level possible.

In fact, I believe that when you do business on the state of the art level, that you will "Wow" your customers and they will keep coming back for more.

Several months ago, one of my customers referred me to a hair salon that is about 30 miles from my home. I decided to visit the salon.
I was impressed at the state of the art service that was delivered. The stylist were very professional. In fact, upon arrival you will be asked if you want something to drink. I always say yess, because I love to sip on water from an elegant glass. Not a water bottle...but a Champaign glass!

The salon is decorated with a very festive look; the environment is filled with plants, soft music playing in the back ground, the sylist only use quality products, there is no long waits and it is a great place to shop.

My experience with the stylist and the enviornment of the salom, keeps me coming back for more!

I was recently on a weekend retreat with my staff members. We spent several hours at the Lodge of The Four Seasons Spa Shiki.

I was impressed from the time that I walked into the door all the way to the locker room where we changed into our robes. The employee that greeted us was so polite, well spoken and she seemed delighted to show us around the spa and serve us.

Every detail of the visit was state of the art. The robes were quality, the soap in the showers was excellent, the place smelled like lavendar, the salt water pool was luxurious and they even offered us gourmet tea while we relaxed.

This inspired me to talk to my employees about the importance of professionalism. I asked my employees, How did that service make you feel? They all enjoyed their visit to the spa and they were still talking about the spa visit on monday morning.

Do you have employees? Are you building a team with a network marketing company? Do you work alone? Whatever your business structure may be, it is vital that you evaluate every aspect of the service that you are delivering to you customers. Moreover, evaluate the feeling that your customers get when they do business with you.

Customers and prospects want an experience not just another sales pitch, or not just another company to do business with. In fact, many customers buy from you because they like you or simply because you made them feel good.

I inspire you to stand out from other business owners. Here are a few evaluation questions to get you to thinking about how you can get started on the road to state of the art business.

How do I look when I meet with clients?
Do I talk more about myself or the client?
Is my business catered around the needs of the clients?
Are you following the leading experts in your field to get new ideas?
How do you feel when you walk in your business? Do you like what you see?
Are your business cards and brochures up to date?
When was the last time you sent a high- end card or gift to your customers?
Visit a state of the art hotel and take notes. What details did the hotel pay close attention to?
Send a survey to your customers and ask, " How does my service make you feel?"

This is just a small list of ideas to get you to thinking about how you can do business on a state of the art level. If you are going to do business, it might as well be "State of the Art!" How do you plan to improve you business and wow your customers?

Doing Business with Diligence is a vital trait in successful business owners. In fact, when you are diligent about your business, you are focused and you persevere through the hard times. Moreover, you are stedfast in your purpose.

There will always be distractions and set-backs, however, you must strive to be diligent about the success of your business. Here are some tips to help you to become more diligent in Business:

Sort through information to see what is worthy of your attention
Be careful and be on guard with every business transaction and plan well
Finish Strong...be sure to finish task that you start
Be strong in the face of unexpected situations and don't focus too long on distractions

In summary, if you are someone who is already diligent about your business, keep up the good work. Diligence takes much practice and when you consistantly focus on being diligent in your business endeavors, you will accomplish much in business!

Doing Business With Loyalty in Mind

Without Loyalty the Very Fabric of Business Unravels

You may have noticed that many of the post on this blog are about doing business with character. I decided to change the theme of this blog to "Doing business with character," because I believe that many businesses have failed because of a lack of character.

It is character that will help you to become a great business person, not the amount of money that you make in business. Moreover, you will be known and respected by the quality of your character.

This week's post is about, Loyalty! In the book, Character Matters, Mark Rutland wrote: " Loyalty is the willingness, because of relational commitment, to deflect praise, admiration and success onto another. Moreover, loyalty will edify and bless its object."

Wow! That statement has inspired me to ask myself, " Am I truly loyal to my customers and employees? When was the last time I blessed and edified a customer or employee?"

Mark Rutland has inspired me to show more loyalty, expect loyalty from my employees and look for loyalty when I hire new employees. Moreover, to edify and bless my customers every chance that I get.

When a customer does repeat business with you, that demonstrates loyalty and we must return loyalty by being committed to our customers. Also, if a customer refers a friend, that is loyalty at the highest level and it must be honored.

Having loyal employees or team members working with you is a noble experience. When your team members or employees are loyal, they give so much of their gifts and talents.

I recently inspired my staff to get creative in their classrooms and they delivered, BIG TIME! Their performance demonstrated loyalty to my business and I was so humbled. In fact, I was so impressed by their loyalty that, I went shopping over the weekend and bought them gifts of appreciation.

This has not always been the case for me; I've had my share of disloyal customers and employees. Disloyal employees will only do the bare minimal and if you fail to motivate the employee to demonstrate loyalty...it will affect other employees.

Disloyal customers, will complain to other customers and this is why it is vital that you must model and express loyalty on a regular basis. Tell your customers that you are committement to them and you want to meet their needs. When they know that you are loyal to them, they will gladly return a favor to you by sending more customers.

I hope that you have been inspired to do business with loyalty in mind and remember...Loyalty is the fabric that holds your business together!

Attitude Determines Success or Failure

Have you checked your attitude lately? Do you deal with situations in your business with a postive or a negative attitude? Periodically, ask your self these questions and write down your response. The response that you see will help you to determine if you are moving forward successfully or not. Your attitude is a vital part of your success as a business owner and it must be checked on a regular basis.

In the book, Attitude 101, John C. Maxwell wrote: "Our attitude is the primary force that will determine whether we succeed or fail. For some, attitude presents a difficulty in every opportunity; for others it presents an opportunity in every situation. Some climb with a positive attitude, while others fall with a negative attitude."

Our attitudes are formed in our childhood, however, your attitude can be changed in the following ways:

1. Reading books that change the way that we think
2. Hanging around positive people
3. Looking for the good in every situation
4. Reading positive affirmations daily
5. Making a choice everyday to be positive, because your success depends on it!
