Mabul is an island off the south-eastern coast of Sabah in Malaysia. It first became popular due to its proximity to Sipadan island.
Few years back, it has gained its recognition as one of the best "muck diving" sites in the world. Mabul Island is a small oval shaped island surrounded by sandy beaches and perched on the northwest corner of a larger two square kilometer reef.
It is more correctly recognised now that the reason for the quality of the MUCK Diving is simply a result of overfishing uses of cyanide and dynamite by the local people of this area.
The reef is on the edge of the continental shelf and the seabed surrounding the reef slopes out to 25 to 30 m deep. There are several dive resorts operating on Mabul island.

Mabul is arguably one of the richest single destinations for exotic small marine life anywhere in the world.[citation needed] Flamboyant cuttlefish, blue-ringed octopus, mimic octopus and bobtail squids are just a few of the numerous types of cephalopods to be found on Mabul's reef.
Many types of gobies can be found including the spike-fin goby, black sail-fin goby and metallic shrimp goby. Frogfish are everywhere -giant, painted and clown frogfish are regularly seen along with the almost the whole scorpion fish family.

Take the North-South Highway to the South and exit through Segamat. From Segamat, continue your journey to Kluang and from there you can go to Mersing.

Take North-South Highway, head south towards Johor. Exit at Ayer Hitam, after toll gate, take a right turn at the traffic junction and head towards Kluang. Before entering Kluang town, there’s a roundabout, take 3 O’clock. Follow signs to Mersing.

KUALA LUMPUR, March 11 (Bernama) -- Firefly Holiday, a subsidiary of Malaysia Airlines (MAS) was launched in Berlin Wednesday, upon the opening of Malaysia's booth at ITB Berlin, the world's largest tourism trade fair.

Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen launched Firefly Holiday, Malaysia's first full-fledged travel portal, offering worldwide packages with a "Do-It-Yourself" feature.

"Firefly Holiday is ideal for general travellers as it offers convenience from the time of booking to the point of arrival at preferred destinations.

"It provides tour operators one touch point of arrival for all-in-one ground arrangements," said Dr Ng in a statement on Thursday.

To date, Firefly Holiday has expanded its services to more than 100 MAS' worldwide destinations via its international holiday packages.

The Firefly Holiday international packages also complement the services offered by Firefly under a code-sharing agreement with MAS, the statement said.

"Through this, the travel portal can pair up its ground packages with international flights," it added.

The Sibu Archipielago lies only 30 minutes from the east coast of peninsular Malaysia. In the northeast of Borneo, in the borderland between Malaysia, Indonesia and Philippines there are three world-class dive destinations located within sight of each other. Sipadan is the legendary island of the turtles, Kapalai with a resort built on stilts in the middle of the sea, and Mabul - an enchanting island where every coconut tree has its own number.

The international famous island of Sipadan lies five degrees north of the equator in the Sulawesi Sea (Celebes Sea). Sipadan is an oceanic island and was formed by living corals growing on top of an extinct undersea volcano, which rises 600m from the seabed.

More than 3000 species of fish and hundres of coral species have been classified in this richest of ecosystems. Sipadan is well known for its unusually large numbers of green and hawksbill turtles which gather there to mate and nest and it is not unusual for a diver to see more then 20 turtles on each dive. Another unique feature to dives visiting Sipadan in the turtle tomb, an underwater limestone cave with a labyrinth of tunnels and chambers that contain many skeletal remains of turtles that became disoriented and then drownrd.

The residential schooling barracuda and big-eye trevally are one of the highlights on every divers wish-list which often gather in thousands forming spectacular tornado-like formations. With thepossibility of seeing pelagics such as mantas, eagle rays, scalloped hammerhead sharks and whale sharks, each dive at Sipadan is a highly anticipated event.

Its not only the big fish that amaze divers coming to Sipadan, the marco life is equally mesmerizing. Garden eels, leaf scorpionfish, mantis shrimps, fire gobies and various pipefish are guaranteed at various dive sites. Pulau Kapas means Cotton Island and is located about 5 nautical miles or 6km off the shore of Marang, Terengganu. This island is a place where many locals and backpackers go due to its fast accessibility from the jetty. You will be able to reach the island in 10 minutes time by speed boat from Marang Jetty. Marang is located 18km south of Kuala Terengganu, the capital of Terengganu state. Do not confuse this Marang town with Merang town. Merang town is located north of Kuala Terengganu.

The activities that you can do on this island are swimming, snorkelling, scuba diving, windsurfing, fishing, kayaking. Motorised activities such as bannana boats are not allowed here. As you dive or snorkel, you will be able to see colourful fishes, corals, turtles and other marine creatures within the vicinity of the island. The Duyong was once spotted on this island as well. Divers, take note that there is a World War II shipwreck north of Gemia island where you can go for your diving activity.

What Time To Go

If you would prefer to have a time of tranquility and peace alone on this island, the best time to go is during the weekdays when most of the locals are working. Due to the monsoon season, most resorts will be closed from November to February. Hence, the best time to go will be during the months of June, July, August and September.

A smaller island beside Pulau Kapas, called Pulau Gemia or Gem Island is located just north of the main island. There is only one resort in Gem Island known as Gem Island Resort. The standard room rate starts from RM207 nett per night onwards depending on the seasons and time of your booking. This is an exclusive island and the facility here are only accessible to those who are staying at the resort.

Accommodation

As it only takes 10 minutes by speed boat from Marang Jetty, most of the locals just go for a day trip to the island. If you do not want to rush, you can stay at the resorts in the island. Getting Here

Once you are in Marang, follow the sign board Jeti Marang and you will arrive here in 5 minutes. There are plenty of car park bays available for your use.

White sandy beaches, crystal clear blue sea, brilliant underwater world..... Redang Island is located at 45 km offshore of Terengganu. Redang archipelago comprises 9 islands, the Lima Island, Paku Besar Island, Paku Kecil Island, Kerengga Besar Island, Kerengga Kecil Island, Ekor Tebu Island, Ling Island, Pinang Island and Redang Island. This archipelago is abounds with marvelous marine fishes, turtles and coral reefs, ensuring a great snorkelling and scuba-diving experience. Redang Island which is approximately 7km in length 6km in width, is the largest of all other islands in the Marine Park.

The Redang archipelago has been designated as Pulau Redang Marine Parks Malaysia as to conserve the islands’ unique ecosystem. There are 500 species of live corals, more than a thousand species of invertebrates and almost 3000 species of fishes which includes manta rays, stingrays, sharks and whale sharks, all living in harmony in the reefs fringing the islands. It is a real heaven for divers.

Diving enthusiasts and underwater photographers will definitely be entranced by the sights of the islands, which are ranked among the best coral reef in the world. Among the attractions at the twenty over different diving spots, there are shipwrecks near Pinang Island, black coral garden as well as the mysterious submerged chamber, both located in the vicinity of Lima Island. And not Forgetting is the Mini Mount situated between Kerenggan Besar Island and Kerenggan Kecil Island. Redang waters also contains two historic shipwrecks. The H.M.S Prince of Wales and H.M.S. Repulse were sunk here during the WWII, setting the stage for the Japanese occupation of Malaya.

Garden Under The Sea

As the largest island among the Redang Archipelago, Pulau Redang is not only made famous by its white sandy beach but also the world lying beneath this crystal clear water which, is not only paradise for marine life but also for natural lovers. Snorkeling or diving in the sea around Pulau Redang is a breathtaking experience where, the water surrounding Pulau Redang is home to some 3,000 species of fish, 1.000 of species of bivalves and 500 species of reef-building coral.

Coral reefs are found in the shallow as well as the deep water around the islands. They are formed by gradual accumulation and transformation of tiny soft-bodied animals, closely related to sea anemones. One of the very common coral found in the waters of Pulau Redang is Staghorn corals. This reef-building corals are often found in shallow areas. They are green, brown or yellowish in colour and they provide shelter for a variety of small fishes and other sea animals.

In the deeper water there are sea fans, soft tree corals, cup coral and several species of nudibranch. Some deeper rocks are covered with leathery soft corals with some soft tree corals, cup corals, tunicates and sponges. Large giant clams are often found here.

Then on the sand itself are larger soft corals and sea fans, whip corals, table corals, mushroom corals, boulder corals, nudibranch, sea stars, cushin stars and sea urchin.

Perhaps you will agree that the glory of this underwater garden will eclipse if without the existence of fish. Fish chasing each other in the coral or swimming in groups in the dark blue sea like a group of patrolling soldiers, making this garden as fascinating and as colourful as the colour palette of an artist.

Shoaling fish such as jacks and snappers and rabbitfish, or groupers silver barracudas, clownfish, triggerfish, parrotfish, stingrays, hammerheads and Green turtles etc. is always surprises the divers. There have been a few times when divers have spotted a whale shark at Big Mount, one of the popular dive sites in Pulau Redang. And if you are lucky, you might spot a cuttlefish, squid and/or Eagle ray while snorkeling.

The best location for snorkeling on this island is found at the southern coast around the Pulau Pinang and Pulau Ekor Tebu. Below sea level, you will get to see some of the more beautiful sea creatures including the batfish, angelfish, boxfish and butterfly fish. There are also many multicolored creatures that eat off anemone, sponges and bivalves. For diving enthusiasts, there are about 18 dive sites around Pulau Redang, each has its own way to surprise the divers.

Conservation has been taken place by gazetted this island as one of the marine park in Malaysia in order to protect the marine life in this marine paradise. Activities such as fishing, collecting corals and marine life, and anchoring boats directly on the reef are prohibited within two nautical miles of these islands.

Bioluminescent Ostracods (also know as Firefleas/Sea firefly) Found at front beach of Redang Reef Resort, The guide call as blue sand. Ostracods are microscopic crustaceans, typically 0.2mm to 2mm long but are readily fossilised and can occur in enormous numbers in some sediments. Ostracods inhabit in aquatic environment use bioluminescence during mating where the males will attract females to them. Males ostracods flash in a sequence as they swim to attract females. Bioluminescence is blue colour because all colors of light do not transmit equally through ocean water, so if the purpose of bioluminescence is to provide a signal that is detected by other organisms, then it is important that the light be transmitted through seawater. Blue light transmits best through seawater.

Be extra careful when buying tour packages, advises Matta president

KUALA LUMPUR: Be extra careful and read the fine print when purchasing tour packages that promise the perfect holiday.

This is the advice given by newly-appointed Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents (Matta) president Datuk Mohd Khalid Harun.

“Whatever excitement you are offered, please be a little bit cautious and pay attention to the details of what you are getting into,” Mohd Khalid told The Star yesterday.

“Make sure you observe the terms and conditions of the package and acknowledge them accordingly.”

He said this after receiving a copy of a police report lodged on Tuesday by a group of 23 holiday-makers who claimed that they were not given a full refund totalling RM24,220 after their tour to China was cancelled due to “technical errors” on not being able to secure air fares for the group.

Group member Cheryl Lim said they accepted the deal at the previous Matta Fair but claimed that they were not shown the special terms and conditions of the offer.

Mohd Khalid said he would investigate the matter further but advised consumers to know what they are getting when they paid up.

“Ask your travel agent for a complete payment itinerary and ensure that nothing is hidden,” he added.

Asked on what would Matta do if such a case was reported to it, Mohd Khalid said there are mechanisms to ensure consumers are protected.

“If we find out there is a case for the customer, then the agency have to make a refund. Failing which we can cancel their membership and in serious cases, have their licences revoked upon recommendation to the Tourism Ministry,” he said.

He added that Matta would call the travel agent who also happened to be an exhibitor in this up-coming Matta Fair to show cause why they should not be barred according to the association code of ethics.

Those with complaints are advised to call Matta at 03-9287 6881 or lodge a complaint online at www.matta.org.my.

The Matta Fair will be held from March 12 to 14.

Langkawi island is an archipelago of 104 islands lying in the north western coast of Peninsular Malaysia. The exact location of these tropical islands is at the site where the Straits of Malacca meets the waters of the Andaman Seas.

Langkawi is coined from the Malay words Lang and Kawi. Lang is a brown eagle and Kawi is a local manganese stone.The ancient fishermen must have seen eagles flying clutching the manganese stones! The main tourist attractions of Langkawi Island is its virgin white sandy beaches.The beaches have very gentle continental slope and the water is crystal clear.

The Langkawi Islands lie in the Andaman sea, just 30 kilometres off the Kedah coast.There are 105 islands in the Langkawi group, most of which are uninhabited or sparsely populated.

The largest and most developed island -known as Langkawi- is the focal point for most visitors. The island is 487 square kilometres in size, with a growing population of around 62,000 people, most of whom live in small villages, dotted around the countryside.

Most development is centred in the South East corner around Kuah, the islands main town. Just a few years ago Kuah was a sleepy backdrop, with a single main street and a few places to shop, stay and eat.

However in 1987 Langkawi was awarded Duty Free status, and the town has since grown to become the primary business and shopping centre on the island.
