‘Reach Within to Embrace Humanity’ is 2011-12 RI theme.

RI President-elect Kalyan Banerjee will ask Rotarians to Reach Within to Embrace Humanity during the 2011-12 Rotary year.

Banerjee unveiled the RI theme during the opening plenary session of the 2011 International Assembly, a training event for incoming district governors.

He urged participants to harness their inner resolve and strength to achieve success in Rotary.
"In order to achieve anything in this world, a person has to use all the resources he can draw on. And the only place to start is with ourselves and within ourselves," Banerjee said.
Once Rotarians find their inner strength, he continued, they can accomplish great things in their communities and around the world.
"Discover yourself, develop the strengths within you, and then unhesitatingly, unflinchingly, go forth and encircle the world, to embrace humanity," he said.
Banerjee emphasized the family as a starting point in serving others. "The communities we live in are not built of individual people but of families -- families living in homes together, sharing their lives and their resources and their common destinies. Good families lead to good neighborhoods, and good neighborhoods build good communities."
Rotarians can focus on projects that support families, such as those that provide safe housing or improve maternal and child health, he said.
Continuity in Rotary’s work, including polio eradication, is also important, Banerjee said. "There are so many things we are indeed good at: working for clean, safe water; spreading literacy; working in so many ways with the New Generations, our youth, in our newest Avenue of Service and assisting them to become the leaders of tomorrow."
Citing Mahatma Gandhi’s call to "be the change you wish to see in the world," Banerjee said Rotarians should also focus on change.
"If we wish for peace, we start by living in peace ourselves, in our homes and in our communities," he explained. "If we wish environmental degradation to stop, if we wish to reduce child mortality or to prevent hunger, we must be the instrument of that change -- and recognize that it must start within us, with each of us."
The theme inspired the roomful of Rotary leaders, including Jogesh Gambhir, governor-elect of District 3250 (India).
“It is a touching theme, but also very purposeful and meaningful,” said Gambhir. “I’m sure we can inspire the clubs into action to solve the problems in the community. That’s the ultimate goal of Rotary.”
“There are no words for me to describe how remarkable it was. To me, he was right on and weaved everything together beautifully," said Jane Millar, governor-elect of District 6290 (parts of Ontario, Canada, and Michigan, USA). "I am so thrilled to be a district governor when this man is president.
“I loved the focus on family, continuity, and change," she added. "Family is the center of everything, and not just our immediate family. It’s also about the family of Rotary and the world as one big family."

2011 registration

For most categories of attendees, the base price for the convention is US$300. Registration for a preconvention event will entail an additional fee; however, you no longer need to register for the convention in order to register for a preconvention event.

Deadlines

15 December is the first registration deadline. For most attendees, the convention registration cost increases to $340 after this time.
31 March is the second registration deadline. After this time, the convention registration cost increases to $380.

2011 host event tickets

Local Rotarians on the Host Organization Committee (HOC) have arranged several cultural excursions and host hospitality events to help visiting Rotarians enjoy their stay in New Orleans. International RYLA 2010

The RYLA Committee is currently accepting applications to the 2010 International RYLA for youth participants. This special event will be held 17-20 June in Montréal, Canada, immediately preceding the 2010 Rotary International Convention.
The International RYLA provides participants with a unique experience to learn advanced leadership techniques through group discussions and training, as well as offering them the unique opportunity to meet and network on an international level with other exceptional young leaders from across the world. More information on this meeting can be found by downloading this online guide document .
While the deadline to apply to attend this event has passed on 15 December 2009, applications are still being considered on a rolling basis as space is available. Eligible participants include those between the ages of 18 to 30 who are not Rotarians, but who have extensive experience with any Rotary youth or educational program. This includes alumni from Interact, Rotaract, local district RYLAs, Youth Exchange, and Ambassadorial Scholarship programs. Please note that Rotarians, as well as past International RYLA alumni are ineligible to apply as participants for this meeting.

After taking the stage to the tune of "California, Here I Come," RI President-elect Ray Klinginsmith announced the 2010-11 RI theme, Building Communities -- Bridging Continents, during the opening plenary session of the 2010 International Assembly .

By attending the International Assembly in January, incoming district governors are getting ready for the new Rotary year, which begins 1 July.

ROTASIA is a Conference of all the Rotaract members from South East Asia, particularly Zone 5 and Zone 6 of Rotary International. It includes Rotaract clubs of Asian countries India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Bhutan etc.

ROTASIA will be organized from 28^th January 2010 to 31^st January 2010 at the historic city of Aurangabad, Maharashtra, India. The very place which witnessed the thrill and enjoyment of, ROTASIA 1994.

Valentine's Day History

There are varying opinions as to the origin of Valentine's Day. Some experts state that it originated from St. Valentine, a Roman who was martyred for refusing to give up Christianity. He died on February 14, 269 A.D., the same day that had been devoted to love lotteries. Legend also says that St. Valentine left a farewell note for the jailer's daughter, who had become his friend, and signed it "From Your Valentine". Other aspects of the story say that Saint Valentine served as a priest at the temple during the reign of Emperor Claudius. Claudius then had Valentine jailed for defying him. In 496 A.D. Pope Gelasius set aside February 14 to honour St. Valentine.
Gradually, February 14 became the date for exchanging love messages and St. Valentine became the patron saint of lovers. The date was marked by sending poems and simple gifts such as flowers. There was often a social gathering or a ball.
In the United States, Miss Esther Howland is given credit for sending the first valentine cards. Commercial valentines were introduced in the 1800's and now the date is very commercialised. The town of Loveland, Colorado, does a large post office business around February 14. The spirit of good continues as valentines are sent out with sentimental verses and children exchange valentine cards at school.
