TWENTY DAYS

Each group or solo artist records with Lundy at Shangri-la Studios, focusing on a single piece of music over two days' time. As the artists experiment with musical arrangements and explore modern and vintage sound techniques, Lundy works across the ten songs to craft a continuous record. The organic process affirms each group’s distinctive songwriting musicand al roots, and at the same time paints a broader creative landscape.

ONE PLACE

Once a month, Ten in Twenty releases a single audio track from the Shangri-la sessions, with photo and video extras online. The collection of recordings—in a limited edition vinyl album and online—will provide a rich sample of the varied influences and styles of modern songwriters in the heart of the Bluegrass state.

Fifth on the Floor - Distant Memory Lane (Official Video)

The Lexington, KY based band Fifth on the Floor,
publicly invited fans, via the band's twitter feed (@FifthontheFloor), to head over to YouTube and view the new official music video for song,"Distant Memory Lane", from the album "Dark and Bloody Ground."

The video, directed by Blake Judd, edited by Jacob Ennis, and produced by JuddFilms and Tuckywood Productions, was filmed at various sites in and near Lexington, Kentucky, including The Green Lantern. is definitely worth a viewing. Likewise, "Distant Memory Lane" is worth more than several listens itself; as it certainly embodies that, energized country/Americana roots-rock sound, that Fifth on the Floor has truly honed into a sound all their own.

Ryan Adams' new album, Ashes & Fire, comes out Oct. 11.

You never know which Ryan Adams you're going to get. Is he crooning, or is he raging? Is the music metal, or twangy country? He can successfully crib just about any style of popular music he chooses: the Dead, the Stones, The Flying Burrito Brothers — it's all in his wheelhouse. You can't help but ask: Will the real Ryan Adams ever stand up?
Now, throw into that complex mix his recent marriage to Mandy Moore, a two-year hiatus from music (long for him, certainly), and a chronic and painful inner-ear affliction called Ménière's disease, which apparently causes him to hear strange tones and fall over things. No, it's not the drink or drugs: He says he's clean and living healthy. In a recent interview, Adams said he's had to completely relearn music because of the Ménière's.
This time out, we have a happy (we hope) and clean (we'll take his word) Adams, making perhaps his sparest, mellowest record to date. His wife makes an appearance, singing a lovely, high harmony, and his friend Norah Jones pitches in, too. At the controls is the venerable Glyn Johns (father of Adams' sometime producer, Ethan Johns), who, at nearly 70, has records to his credit by The Who, The Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton and more.
The result, Ashes & Fire, is soulful and low-key; not without edge but certainly more lean and hushed than, say, Easy Tiger. The lyrics are considerably softer — "I will shelter you with my love and my forgiveness," he sings, later adding, "Do you believe in love?" — but he's allowed to have a honeymoon record, right?
It helps that Ashes & Fire, out Oct. 11, features the delicious work of keyboardist Benmont Tench, on loan from Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers. Tench adds color and character, particularly in "Dirty Rain." It's not his first time working with Adams, and here's hoping it's not the last.

On Record Store Day, Phish will release TWO SOUNDCHECKS, a Limited Edition 7-inch vinyl record that will be available exclusively at participating independently owned record stores across the country. TWO SOUNDCHECKS marks the band's first ever live vinyl release and their first release in conjunction with Record Store Day.
This 7-inch is limited to 2,000 hand-numbered copies, and once they are gone they are gone. The A-Side is an instrumental jam culled from the soundcheck of Phish's third show of a sold out three-night stand at the Greek Theatre in Berkeley, CA. The B-Side is an especially exotic soundcheck from Hartford, CT in 2009 (with just Trey on bass, and Fish on drums). This Limited Edition 7-inch was created exclusively for Record Store Day.

"Headtronics is an electronic project from DJ Logic (Medeski, Martin and Wood; John Popper Project), Steve Molitz (Particle; Phil Lesh and Friends) and local bass prodigy Freekbass (Bootsy Collins; Buckethead) that has already received national attention though the artists have only performed a very limited number of dates.

The trio was birthed from a collaborative effort during last summer's Universal Church of Love and Music Funk Festival in PA. Afterward, Freekbass said, “It turned out to be one of those magical musical moments, so we decided to play some full shows together.” The accolades and influences of the individual artists of Headtronics ranges from funk, to rock and roll, to hip-hop, but together Logic, Molitz and Freekbass create electronic funk that appeals to fans of all genres. "

Local Lexington band, Shemale Fiesta, are opening things up and there is no one who doubts their ability to get the crowd hyped. (There last performance in Lexington back in Nov in support of Gene Ween solo acoustic show morphed into one of the wildest shows of 2010 hosted by Cosmic Charlies.

So, if your not already down there...then its time to get up and start moving.

Moon Taxi, the Nashville Tenn. rock band, released one more year end news update of 2010 this evening. Album Review: Night Torn Mad - Release "1.21"

Night Torn Mad, the Louisville, KY based band, started off the week with the release of their first record "1.21" on Little Heart Records and is available on iTunes The band will be closing out the week with an album release party tonight, 10/23/2010, at Scull Alley.
Night Torn Mad consists of Kris King (vocals, rhythm guitar), Jeremy Heyer (drums, percussion), Aaron Williams (bass guitar) and Matt Thomasson (lead guitar), whom all of which are in no way new comers to the Louisville, KY music scene. Kris is a former member of Mr. Blonde and current member of The Villains. Jeremy is a founding member of the the band Furje and also a current member of Double Down. Aaron Williams is former bass player for Mr. Blonde and current member of Double Down. Matt Thomasson is current member of Double Down.

With that being said, what can one expect from "1.21'? Well , with influences ranging from The White Stripes/Raconteurs, Pearl Jam, Kings of Leon, The Strokes, Radiohead, Bob Dylan, and Levon Helm, their is a bit of everything. However, its undeniable that the unifying theme and overall sound of the record is undoubtedly what lead guitarist Matt Thomasson described simply as "Red Blooded American Dirt Rock." With, a description like that one may still be asking what exactly that entails.
Thomasson, accustomed to playing heavily influenced prog/psych rock, went on to say, that "That 1.21 is a collage of 4 talented musicians, from different walks of life collaborating with each other, and growing together. Night Torn Mad is an equal distribution of creative input. None of it is technically difficult" (although one would be hard pressed to to just up and nail Thomasson's leads in my opinion). When speaking of 1.21 Thomasson added, "we consciously chose to make music that was fun to listen too. The lyrics are art, for the listener to determine, with the songs written so the listener can make their own. The lyrics may seem vague, or unclever, but they are designed so people can easily digest them, and make them a part of themselves."

On 1.21 these goals are achieved with flying colors through its entirety. The record's ripping opener "Escape From Mars", serves as a blueprint for the criteria stated above from Kris King's sing along chorus, Heyer's faux garage rock drum beat, Williams' undistorted driving bass line, complete with a drop out-low end,bridge setup, for a ripper from Thomasson. The elements are there and they work perfectly. The song "No Fame" definitely serves as a cornerstone of the entire record, with its Tom Petty esque riff and infectious chorus it achieves pure rock n roll without coming across as cheap. Not to mention the added bonus of Thomasson really strutting out on the track as he fully displays his signature no holds barred lead guitar style. The record includes the ballad "Throw me in The River", with a quintessential KY rock sound and lyrics to match. The record's closer "Fall of Rome" is something else in its own right, Williams' driving bass groove pairs perfectly with Thomasson's infectious lead theme guitar lick, mixed with a guitar tone and vocals from Kris King reminiscent of early 90's Dinosaur Jr.

Here at Switched, we love things that make noise. And when it comes to noise-making, few names have a stronger pedigree than Moog. The granddaddy of electronic music has released Filtatron, an iPhone app based around the classic Moog Ladder Filter that gives the company's analogue effects and synths their distinctive sound. You can use the digitally modeled classic filter to manipulate input from your iPhone's mic, recorded audio samples or the built-in oscillator. Filtatron even has a small bank of effects for adding distortion or delay to your sounds. While the preset samples and sound settings are fun to play with, you really unlock the power of the app when you start processing tones from the oscillator and your own recorded clips by manipulating them with the pads. You can change practically any settings or levels using the pads, allowing you to sweep through delay levels, play the oscillator or pump up the distortion. The pads are split in two so that you can alter two settings at once.

In our short hands-on with Filtatron, we were impressed with its responsiveness and the quality of the sounds it produced. Our one complaint is that some of the controls were tough to manipulate on the iPhone's tiny screen. (An iPad version should help to alleviate that problem.) Sam Bush Band treats Lexington to More than Just a Free Show

The Sam Bush Band took the stage Friday evening, October 8th, 2010, at the Courthouse Plaza in Lexington, KY performing as part of the city's Spotlight Lexington which coincided with The Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games.

The crowd greeted the designated "Father of Newgrass," and Kentucky Music Hall of Fame member, with a roaring welcome. Without hesitation, the show was under way as Bush, backed by a four piece band - banjoist Scott Vestal, guitarist Stephen Mougin, drummer Chris Brown and bassist Todd Parks, got right down to business and into the jams. The first hour was spent visiting hits, old and new, with "Ridin' That Bluegrass Train", "Blue Mountain", and even threw in a cover of Bob Marley's "One Love" for crowd pleasing good measure.

The second half of the show, Bush and company began to stretch out musically with a selection of songs possessing much more complex arrangements. Several of, in which, he laid down his trusty mandolin, picked up the fiddle, and in turn leading into several darkly themed movements for a portion of the set, including "The Ballad of Stringbean and Estelle".

Bush returned to his trusty mandolin, leading the band towards the deep, gritty, funk-induced mandolin chops that make up what is none other, than the fabled and unmistakable sound of Sam Bush "Newgrass". The band kept the intensity at a constant increase, only taking pause before playing "Howlin at the Moon" in order for Bush to dedicate the song to good friend JD Crow; fellow bluegrass legend and Lexington native, who had performed with his band J.D. Crowe and the New South earlier that evening at 6pm on the same stage.

Just as it seemed that the time had come to begin winding the night to a close, Bush and the band actually took it one up one more notch in an onslaught of prog-rock to the highest degree, featuring Bush and Mougin both on electric instruments, which was nothing short of mind bending. The band then brought the evening to a close which included a cover of "Cripple Creek" (Levon Helm) and Bush's solo performance of "Girl from the North Country". Once the band had left stage for the night, there is no doubt that the crowd in attendance collectively shared the same sentiment of awe and disbelief, that the evening's show had indeed cost zero admission.

iTour: Phish Fall Tour Planning on your iPhone

It’s no secret that Phish tour brings out the best of the technology we have surrounding our lives these days, and this technology landscape just got a bit more targeted for the Phish fans that are tweeting setlists updates from their iPhones.

iTour is an free iPhone app that is designed specifically for Phish’s Fall Tour and is programmed to provide the details, maps and info that any fan on fall tour would need at their fingertips. Mr. Miner posted on this earlier this week but I’m just catching the news now; he’s given the app a run-through over at his Phish Thoughts blog…

Integrated with Google Maps on your iPhone, simply click on one of seven categories per venue, and iTour flips you to a map with your locales of choice already pinpointed. Choose from “Venue,” “Hotels,” “Restaurants,” Gas,” “Groceries,” “Liquor,” and “Campgrounds,” and the application will inform you of the nearest facilities around the venue. Perfect for both on-the-fly adventure and advance tour planning, iTour is the touring companion that has been begging to be made since Phish and iPhones collided.

I could have used this big time when I did my seven show run during 2009. Here’s more info on the app from the developer:
