Dala'il al-khayrat

Dala'il al-khayrat
Muhammad ibn Sulayman al-Jazuli, who died in 869/1465, was a member of the Berber tribe of Jazula in southern Morocco. He wrote the Dala’il al-khayrat with the help of books from the library of al-Qarawiyyin, the celebrated mosque and university at Fas (modern day Fez) in Morocco; the library was created in 750/1349 by the Marinid sultan Abu ‘Inan Faris.
The Dala’il al-khayrat is a collection of prayers for the Prophet, including a description of his tomb, his names and honorary epithets, and a host of other devotional material. The Dala’il became the centre of a popular religious brotherhood, the Ashab al-Dalil, whose essential function revolved around the recitation of this book of religious piety.
There are two manuscripts of this text in the Library’s collection.
The first, copied in the 13th/19th century, comprises ninety folios written in a bold, vocalised African naskhi hand; the opening page of the manuscript is shown here.
The second manuscript, which is also a 13th/19th century copy, is written in fine, maghribi script and includes two illustrations, one representing the great mosque of Mecca, the other representing the mosque at Medina and the tomb of the Prophet; the opening page with an illuminated headpiece, and the illustration of Medina are shown here.

The newly-formed Ismaili Community Ensemble dazzled audiences with rousing performances in celebration of Mawlana Hazar Imam’s Golden Jubilee. The spectacular concerts were held during the course of three nights from 28 February – 1 March 2008 at the Ismaili Centre in London.
The Ensemble, which is made up of 30 talented musicians and vocalists of all ages from the Jamat, collaborated with musicians from the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Fusing original classical and modern music with inspiring lyrics from the East and the West, they successfully created melodies expressing the pluralism and richness of traditions within the Jamat.
The pieces drew upon a range of traditions, including a musical interpretation of Ibn Hani al-Andalusi’s poetry entitled You are the one. Vocalists in the Ensemble performed a powerful three-part harmony, beginning with a simple melody set to the word Bismillah and its English translation. They also rendered a composition set to the words of the poem The Rising of the Sun by Ra'is Hasan.

The Historic Cities Programme launched the Canadian tour of its exhibition in Montreal on 1 April 2008. It will travel to Toronto, Vancouver, Edmonton, and Calgary in the coming weeks. The exhibition is an initiative of the Aga Khan Trust for Culture, commemorating the Golden Jubilee of Mawlana Hazar Imam. It showcases five projects located in Egypt, Syria, Mali, India, and Afghanistan, providing a unique lens on the role of culture in development.
For the past 25 years, the Historic Cities Programme has promoted the conservation and re-use of buildings and public spaces in historic cities in the Muslim World. Its projects are designed to bring about social, economic and cultural development, while building community participation and training local professionals and institutions.

Inspired to give in service to others

Each year, out of hundreds of individuals who volunteer in Calgary, the YMCA identifies, selects, and recognises only 13 by naming them Volunteers of the Year. Ruhee Ismail-Teja, a vivacious and inspiring 14 year-old, became the youngest-ever recipient of the award in 2007. The prestigious award is based on a comprehensive nomination and selection process which takes into account a wide range of criteria. These include the volunteer’s contributions in helping Calgarians to realise their potential, the length and frequency of their service, and their efforts in recruiting additional volunteers. Although she did not expect to be recognised for the work that she “just did in order to help others,” the award was an honour for Ruhee and her family.
Volunteering requires hours of thought, commitment and effort, not to mention the sacrifice of other extra-curricular activities. Ruhee’s volunteering efforts include participating in the Mayor’s Youth Council (which she was invited to co-chair this year), the Youth Foundation, the Calgary Girls’ School Senate, the YMCA Kids In Motion Program, and the Ismaili Junior Volunteer Corps. Since the age of seven, Ruhee has also served as a volunteer at her Jamatkhana, and has now become a role model for younger volunteers.

With seven years of volunteering under her belt, Ruhee enjoys motivating and guiding the younger generation towards volunteering because she feels that “everyone should have the opportunity to enjoy the wonderful experiences volunteering has given me.” In addition to the Junior Volunteer Corps, she is actively involved in the Jamat as a mentor with the Teen Masti programme and a youth coordinator for several of the ongoing Golden Jubilee programmes and initiatives.
Being passionately involved in so many volunteering endeavours is not for the fainthearted. It requires balancing a large number of academic, extra-curricular and social activities, which can sometimes be overwhelming. However, Ruhee seems to have found a happy balance between fulfilling her desire to volunteer and excelling in her education. Often waking-up at the crack of dawn, Ruhee starts her day with homework, which she seldom has the time to complete at night. After an intensive day at school, she heads off to one of her many volunteer activities. Her most recent voluntary position allows her to connect with the youth and to hold discussions on the importance of having their voices heard in the political world.

Ruhee believes she has been especially fortunate in life; her motivation to volunteer comes from her desire to give back to society. This aspiration is enhanced by the enjoyment and satisfaction she receives through active involvement and teamwork. Volunteering, she feels, has contributed to her growth as a person. Ruhee cites her mother as her role model, whom she describes as an “amazingly balanced person.”. Her family has greatly aided her to balance her volunteering with her schoolwork, by being encouraging, supportive and understanding.
She also feels that Mawlana Hazar Imam’s guidance has fuelled her passion for volunteerism. Ruhee’s own convictions and outlook reflect comments about the ethic of volunteerism in the Ismaili tradition made by Princess Zahra during the 1998 World Volunteer Conference in Edmonton: “Voluntary service to others, is viewed as an integral part of daily life, never as a burdensome obligation or an elective activity. Service is a means for each individual to actualise Islam's ethics of inclusiveness, of compassion, of sharing, of the respect for life, and of personal responsibility for sustaining a healthy physical, social and cultural environment.” Fundamental to this concept, she continued, was “generosity of material resources, of time, of thought, and of knowledge.”
Ruhee’s advice to young people wishing to get involved in community activities is to start as soon as possible, but to always aim for equilibrium between volunteering and education. She urges her peers to think about what inspires one to volunteer, how it can be done effectively, the importance of a good support system, and the benefits and recognition that can potentially result from giving time and knowledge in service to others.

Abu Ya‘qub al-Sijistani was among the eminent early Ismaili da‘is of Persia in the 4th century AH /10th century CE. His contributions to various philosophical and cosmological doctrines of the Fatimid Ismailis can be traced through his numerous works, of which at least a half dozen (not counting minor epistles) are extant.

The title Kitab al-yanabi‘ or simply al-Yanabi‘ translates as The Book of Wellsprings or The Wellsprings. Yanabi‘ is the plural of yanbu‘, meaning spring, source, fountainhead, or wellspring. The work, in 40 chapters, is organised as a collection of themes, each individual theme being the subject of its own section or chapter, a yanbu‘. The Kitab al-yanabi‘ presents a theory of knowledge that accounts for the totality of the cosmos, seen by al-Sijistani as a macrocosm, and of humankind, as its microcosm.

The main body of al-Sijistani’s writing dates to a period just prior to 361 AH/971 CE, and an approximate date of 350 AH/961 CE, falling within the reign of the Fatimid Imam-Caliph al-Mu‘izz, seems reasonable for this treatise.

Nearly a thousand years separate the time of composition and the date of this manuscript. Written in bold black naskhi script, this manuscript is one of three copies of this work in the IIS Library’s collection.

Divan-i Nasir Khusraw

The prominent eleventh century Ismaili da‘i Nasir Khusraw is acknowledged as one of the foremost poets of the Persian language. It was in the valley of Yumgan, a remote mountainous region of Badakhshan, that Nasir Khusraw composed most of his works, all of which are written in Persian. The Divan, a collection of his poetry, includes close to 11,000 verses on personal, ethical and religious themes. This manuscript, written in clear nasta‘liq hand, is preceded by a short autobiographical account of the poet.

Imam ‘Ali’s aphorisms and wise counsels inspired the spiritual life of Muslims through the centuries and in many different lands. His words were thus translated into numerous languages across the Muslim world. The Kalame Mawla is a moving poetic rendition of his teachings in Hindustani. The work exhorts the believers to observe virtues such as brotherhood, honesty and generosity. This manuscript, written in a beautiful Khojki hand in Mumbai (Bombay), contains a few choice couplets at the end, including a verse of the famous Persian poet Hafiz.

Coinage of the Fatimids

“Coins and the discipline of numismatics which deals with them, lie at the crossroads of so many historical, cultural and artistic concerns that hardly anyone studying a traditional civilization or an earlier period of history has been able to avoid handling or dealing with these thousands of small gold, silver or copper objects. Economic historians see in them the abstract standards used for maintaining regional or international exchanges, and draw from them important conclusions about inflationary practices, or the presence or absence of gold and silver. To political historians the primary interest of coins derives from their official character. Manufactured under strict governmental control in state-run mints, coins exhibit signs of power and authority, and changes in those signs usually imply major political or ideological changes. Historians of art have many reasons for being fascinated by coins, but a methodologically important one is that most are dated and thus provide benchmarks for the art historian’s maniacal passion for chronological sequence. In addition, coins are visual messages carried to a vast public, and their sheer number gives a sense of what was meant to be part of the natural visual language of a culture or of a historical moment. Social historians and ethnographers know how much coins were part of the complex system of gift-giving which characterises any human group.”

The Fatimid caliphate was established in 909 in North Africa, and soon extended into Sicily, Egypt, Palestine and Syria reaching the peak of its power during the long reign of the 8th Fatimid Imam-caliph al-Mustansir bi’llah (d. 1094). During this period of almost 2 centuries, the Fatimids created a prosperous state with a remarkable intellectual, economic and cultural vitality.

Developed in consultation with National Councils globally, the Ismail Economic Forum (IEF) is a Golden Jubilee International Programme that seeks to provide a springboard for increased collaboration among Ismaili entrepreneurs, strategic business alliances, Jamati institutions, and AKDN institutions. The IEF will formally launch with an international conference in Dubai, from April 26th – 28th, 2008. This first conference will focus on value creation through the formation and strengthening of strategic business alliances.

A rich history of the Scout Movement in Portugal

Founded by Lord Robert Stephenson Smyth Baden-Powell in 1907, Scouting is a worldwide movement with the aim of supporting young people to play a more constructive role in society by investing in their physical, mental and spiritual development. The current Ismaili Scout programme in Portugal can trace its origins to the Mozambique Jamat having been introduced by Akbaraly Nordin and Gulamali Rawjee in 1934. In 1974 the Group was discontinued with the migration of the Jamat to Portugal, although the Scouting spirit never ceased. In April 1976, led by Scout Chiefs Nizarali Guiga and Nurala Nurdin, the tradition was revived with the establishment of Group 36 of the Portugal Scouts Association, .

The youth in Portugal were immediately drawn to Group 36, committing time and effort to community activities, serving both the Jamat and wider society, and contributing to a sense of unity among young people in the Ismaili Jamat. The movement grew so quickly that for years, Group 36 was one of the largest Scouts groups in the entire Portugal Scouts Association. In May 1999, having further grown in number and scope, the Ismaili Scouts group was given a home-base in the Ismaili Centre, Lisbon. Today, Group 36 is the second largest Scouts group in all of Portugal.

The Scouting Organisation and Group 36 enable young women and men to work together in order to learn new skills, achieve personal growth, and realise their full potential. Khairunissa Jafar, an active member of the group, explains: "Each person that has to take-up a task gets the chance to acquire skills in the areas of their personal interests such as learning how to conduct first-aid, handle tools, and take inventory. Every scout learns to manage, lead a group and provide for the development of the people under their responsibility. Each one of these tasks brings a lot of responsibility and commitment, which are critical features for the development of a Scout and a citizen. The Scout motto Be Prepared reminds us to always be prepared to work, to learn, and to serve."

Since their formation more than 30 years ago, Group 36 has supported numerous events including the opening ceremony of the Ismaili Centre, Lisbon; several Portuguese Scouting gatherings at the International Scout Camp of Caparica; the Euroventures Conference; and Mawlana Hazar Imam's recent visit to Mozambique. In addition, they have been regular volunteers at the Aga Khan Foundation, Portugal’s fundraising event "Marcha Por Uma Causa" (Walk for a Cause) where they have assisted with logistics, organisation, and implementation. More recently, the members of Group 36 helped victims of the aftermath of the Seia wildfires, travelling to the region and distributing emergency rations and care packages.

The Scouts played an important role at the Euroventures Conference held at the Ismaili Centre, Lisbon in October 2007. In addition to welcoming the conference participants, speakers and distinguished guests, Group 36 also provided participants with information about Portugal. Impressed with the Scouts dedication to service, Prince Rahim Aga Khan, who attended the Euroventures Conference, signed the group’s Book of Honour and accepted the Group 36’s kerchief as a token.

The motivation and dedication of Group 36 has not gone unnoticed by the Portuguese Scouts Association. Recently, three members of the group were awarded the prestigious title of Escoteira da Patria, the highest honour possible among the Portugal Scout Movement. The recipients - Shirin Bhaloo, Khairunissa Jafar and Sofia Remtula - were recognised for their individual and group achievements in contributing to society and the people around them.

Khairunissa Jafar, reflecting on the honour she received, explained the value of her Scouting experience: "Scouting strengthens the values of sharing, friendship, and how to give and how to receive. It also teaches us self-reliance, how to act and to manage our available resources. The Scouting process enables us to overcome difficulties and not only learn how to survive, but also how to live. It teaches us to lead, to be responsible, and to do our best in a thorough way."

The Scouts in Portugal celebrated their silver or 25th anniversary in 2001 at the International Scout Camp of Caparica, taking part in special event discussions on the new opportunities within the European Union. The event was attended by over 600 Scouts from across Portugal and Europe.

Of all the Islamic art forms, calligraphy, the age-old art that combines the written word with visual imagery is perhaps the most revered. The Quran-e Shariff itself emphasises the importance of the written word endowing the art with transcendent significance. Over a span of 1 400 years, Arabic calligraphy has evolved to include many different scripts and styles, appearing not only in the written form but also adorning architecture, sculpture, ceramics, textiles and glassware.

The Ismaili Council for the Southwestern United States in collaboration with the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston and the Asia Society, Texas Center, hosted an educational programme entitled, “The Living Art of Islamic Calligraphy” on 28 October 2007. World-renowned master calligrapher, Mohamed Zakariya, who embraced Islam at the age of 19, spoke about the historic roots and religious significance of the art of calligraphy. Over the last five decades Zakariya, a native of California, has traveled extensively in the Muslim world in pursuit of the venerated Islamic art form that became his métier. He has studied with A.S. Ali Nour in Tangier, Morocco, at the Research Center for Islamic History, Art and Culture; and in Istanbul with two celebrated Turkish calligraphers, Hasan Celebi and Ali Alparslan.

Zakariya spoke at length about the early development of the Arabic language and its calligraphy, highlighting the influences of various geo-political forces on the development of the different Arabic scripts: Kufic, Thuluth, Naskhi, and Maghribi. He also noted that Arabic, in its written form, was distinguishable in both a rough form used for daily purposes and a more formal and embellished art form which later developed into calligraphy.

“Proper calligraphy is supposed to expand your heart to the meaning of a text,” clarified Zakariya, as he went on to show that the form of a word should follow the course of the speaker’s breath. "The writing should flow in a way that is natural and easy to read. The challenge is to present the great truths in a manner that, while remaining loyal to the traditions of the past, is new, fresh and vital. In this way, the ancient texts can speak for themselves, revealing their meanings spontaneously to the viewer - sometimes gently, sometimes grandly,” he mused.

The event drew a diverse audience from various cultural and religious backgrounds eager to learn more about this often under-represented tradition of embellishing the written word. “Listening to Zakariya describe the centuries-old Islamic art of calligraphy in such exquisite detail was as much a spiritual experience as it was a glowing tribute to the historical patronage and evolution of this great art form,” observed Dr. Ahmad Durrani, a professor at Rice University. “I believe that there is no better way to promote trust and understanding of Islamic values than through the universal languages of music and art.”

The reed and pen of Islamic calligraphy are imbued with manifold spiritual meanings, creating a direct link between the divine inspiration of the holy word and the writer as the agent through whom that word is made manifest. Hence the calligrapher’s tools are as important as the skill of the writing itself. Zakariya therefore, true to the traditions of the ancient masters of Baghdad, Cairo, Herat and Istanbul, takes the time to make his own instruments, thereby heightening the intimacy and strength of his composition. He carves his own pen and mixes the inks in his backyard. He believes that pen, ink, and paper should all be in harmony with the artist to create compositions that are truly sacred forms of art. Zakariya, who also designed the USA Eid stamp issued in 2001, is currently based in Arlington, Virginia, where he teaches calligraphy and holds workshops and exhibitions across the country.

During a reception held after the workshop, audience members who had been inspired by the creative spirit of the talk, had an opportunity to try their hand at calligraphy; others mingled while they observed the master calligrapher at work. The keen interest, curiosity, and reverence shown by the audience proved to be solid testimony to the belief that art transcends cultural barriers.
