Britain's most successful football manager calls it a day: Sir Alex Ferguson RETIRES after 27 years at Manchester United

2013-05-08T05:04:00.000-07:00

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson today announced that he will retire from the club at the end of the season after 27 years in charge.

The 71-year-old clinched his 13th Premier League title with the club last month, but that will be his last hurrah as manager of the Old Trafford club.

Speculation had been rife that the fiery Scotsman would end his long tenure at the club, but Manchester United chiefs had refused to comment.

Sir Alex said in a statement that it was important to him to leave the club in the 'strongest possible shape.'

He said: 'The decision to retire is one that I have thought a great deal about and one that I have not taken lightly. It is the right time.

'It was important to me to leave an organisation in the strongest possible shape and I believe I have done so.

'The quality of this league winning squad, and the balance of ages within it, bodes well for continued success at the highest level whilst the structure of the youth set-up will ensure that the long-term future of the club remains a bright one.'

Sir Alex will remain part of the set up at Old Trafford despite stepping back from on the field matters.

He will take up a role as director and ambassador for the club when he retires after Manchester United's game with West Brom on May 18 - his 1,500th game in charge.

He said: 'Going forward, I am delighted to take on the roles of both Director and Ambassador for the club. With these activities, along with my many other interests, I am looking forward to the future.'

He paid tribute to the support of his friends, colleagues and family throughout his career, in particular his wife Cathy.

He said: 'I must pay tribute to my family, their love and support has been essential.

'My wife Cathy has been the key figure throughout my career, providing a bedrock of both stability and encouragement. Words are not enough to express what this has meant to me.

'As for my players and staff, past and present, I would like to thank them all for a staggering level of professional conduct and dedication that has helped to deliver so many memorable triumphs.'

Ferguson has had a career the like of which will never be seen again.

He won his 49th trophy by winning United's 20th league championship and seemed set to extend his career into next season, confirming as much in his programme notes ahead of Sunday's encounter with Chelsea.

Instead, with a hip operation booked in for August, this weekend's Old Trafford encounter with Swansea, followed by a trophy presentation, will be his last home game in charge.

Manchester united Chief Executive David Gill described his time working with the manager as the 'greatest experience' of his working life.

He said that the club have been planning for Sir Alex's retirement on and off the pitch.

He said: 'I've had the tremendous pleasure of working very closely with Alex for 16 unforgettable years - through the treble, the double, countless trophy wins and numerous signings.

'We knew that his retirement would come one day and we both have been planning for it by ensuring the quality of the squad and club structures are in first-class condition.

'Alex's vision, energy and ability have built teams - both on and off the pitch - that his successor can count on as among the best and most loyal in world sport.'

Ubingwa wanukia Yanga

2013-03-11T00:06:00.001-07:00

Yanga: Ally Musa, Godfrey Taita, David Luhende, Mbuyu Twite, Kelvin Yondan, Athuman Idd ‘Chuji,’ Simon Msuva, Frank Domayo, Jerry Tegete/Nizar Khalfan, Hamis Kiiza na Haruna Niyonzima.
Toto: Erick Ngwege, Erick Mlilo, Robert Magadula, Erick Kyaruzi, Everist Maganga, Hamis Msafiri, Severine Constatine, Emmanuel Swita, Chika Olugbe, Musa Musa/Simba Boaz na Mohamed Jinga/Hery Mohamed.

Simba mwaka wa taabu, Azam FC yafanya kweli

2013-03-03T23:22:00.000-08:00

Is this the way to White Hart Lane? Wilshere and Walcott show off matching Ferraris

2013-03-02T01:46:00.000-08:00

Jack Wilshere arrived at Arsenal's training ground on Friday in a flashy Ferrari to match team-mate Theo Walcott's wheels.

The 21-year-old sported the same model of the famous Italian car as Walcott did last week as Arsenal fine-tuned their preparations for the north London derby at their Colney base on Friday.

The Gunners make the short trip across north London on Sunday to take on their arch-rivals Tottenham in a potentially make-or-break clash.

Arsene Wenger will hope Wilshere's performance at the weekend is just as impressive as his car if the Gunners are to pick up three valuable points in the race to secure Champions League football next season.

The way Gareth Bale is playing, Arsenal might need these Ferraris to keep up with the rapid Welsh wizard.

Last month, Manchester United players arrived for work in a fleet of brand new Chevrolets as part of a £357m sponsorship with the American car giants.

Patrice Evra, Jonny Evans, Antonio Valencia and Tom Cleverley took delivery of their 184mph Chevrolet Camaro while Javier Hernandez acquired a Corvette.

Hakuna dalili uwanja wa Yanga

2013-03-02T01:45:00.000-08:00

“Bado hatuajaanza kukusanya fedha.

No passport required: Suarez won't leave even if Liverpool miss out on Europe completely, insists Rodgers

2013-03-01T02:46:00.001-08:00

Brendan Rodgers is adamant Luis Suarez will stay at Liverpool even if they miss out on Europe.

Liverpool are in danger of failing to qualify and they need to finish fifth to guarantee a Europa League place next season.

Rodgers is unconcerned that Suarez will demand to leave if they fall short and says the striker’s agent has told him he is happy at Anfield.

“There’s no getting away from it, Luis has been brilliant this year, but I haven’t seen anything different that would make me feel he wouldn’t be here,” said the Reds boss.

“I had a great conversation with his agent a couple of weeks ago. He came in and rolled it out that he was so happy here and he was keen over the next couple of years for the club to progress.

“I’ve made him sort of my architect within the group. Him and I communicate a lot so I get a feeling. It’s not like I don’t talk to him.

“Is he deserving of that Champions League level? Of course he is, but I would be confident enough that he will be here because he is enjoying his football.

“He’s playing well, he’s doing really well. Hopefully we continue to keep a great player like that.”

Rodgers is delighted with the 25-goal Suarez and claims the Uruguayan star remains as committed to Liverpool as he was last summer when he agreed a long-term deal.

“Luis has been phenomenal, and that’s not just the opinion of his manager,” he said.

“His desire is to see Liverpool progress and that’s why he signed last summer. I don’t feel, or see, anything different that would change my mind.

“This is a club that he loves. He is enjoying working this way. If we can keep supporting him and getting the team moving forward, then he seems happy and content.”

Yanga extend lead

2013-02-28T01:49:00.000-08:00

Young Africans continued their inexorable quest to win this season’s Mainland premiership title after beating visiting Kagera Sugar in their return leg match played at packed National Stadium in Dar es Salaam yesterday.

After a barren first half, Yanga managed to notch their all important goal after 21 minutes of the second half through their Rwandan import Haruna Niyonzima.

However, Yanga would have been two up had Didier Kavumbagu not missed a penalty midway into the second half.

The closely contested encounter attracted huge number of fans despite a midweek fixture when most of the people are busy.

After Yanga’s goal the visitors who won the first leg at their home ground in Bukoba last year by the same margin, played an enterprising soccer but would not find an equalizer.

The victory was a sweet revenge for the premiership pacemakers who are now focusing on sealing off the scudetto.

Yanga have now attained 42 points to open a six point gap over second placed Azam FC in 18 appearances. Yanga have eight games in hand before winding up the season and are massive eleven points clear at the top of the standings table over archrivals and holders Simba.

Both Simba and Azam were not in action as they gear up for CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup return legs against Libolo of Angola and Al Nasr of South Sudan this weekend.

Most of the Yanga fans who were interviewed at the stadium have been relieved of the pressure to hunt the title as they believe Kagera Sugar was the side that would have challenged their team.

Yanga’s next match in the league is against visiting Toto Africa at the National Stadium in Dare salaam on March 9.

Toto have no record to beat Yanga in Dar es Salaam though they have managed it last year in Mwanza when they were in search of points to save them from the relegation chaos. Toto are also in trouble to avoid relegation this season as well.

In Tanga hosts Coastal Union battled to a barren draw with visiting Ruvu Shooting in a match played at the Mkwakwani Stadium.

Costal have so far attained 31 points top tie with holders Simba.

Heading a football 'can cause brain damage and affect thinking'

2013-02-28T01:43:00.002-08:00

It is well known that playing the beautiful game can increase fitness.

But heading a football could in fact cause brain damage, scientists are warning.

Researchers at the University of Texas say that a header is classed as a 'minor sub-concussive blow' and have found that young people who play football are less able to perform tasks requiring basic thinking skills than those who avoid the game.

In a series of computer games, the scientists pitted female secondary school students who play football against those who did not.

The results, which were published in journal PLoS ONE, showed that the players were ‘significantly slower’ at a task that required pointing away from an on-screen target than non-players.

Study author Dr Anne Serrano said impacts such as those experienced by heading a football during a match could be responsible for the difference.

She explained: ‘Tasks that involve pointing away from a target require specific voluntary responses, whereas moving toward a target is a more reflexive response.

‘We think that sub-concussive blows to the head may cause changes to certain cognitive functions.’

However, it was not all bad news for footballers, as results also showed they were just as capable at a task which required them to point at an on-screen target.

Dr Serrano hailed the findings as a means of identifying possible neural disorders caused by playing sport.

She said: ‘The app used in our research may be a quick and effective way to screen for and track cognitive changes in athletes - it could also have broader applications in clinics or out in the field.’

This study comes just months after an extensive study of the brains of American football players showed than the majority had signs of brain damage as a result of repeated head injuries.

The study, carried out by the Boston University School of Medicine, posthumously tested the brains of 50 footballers.

It found a link between head injuries suffered in the heavy-impact sport and degenerative brain disease.

The study, which included stars such as Dave Duerson, Cookie Gilchrist and John Mackey, found widespread evidence of chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE).

The disease can lead to sufferers experiencing memory loss, dementia and depression.

Messi and Ronaldo are the best... of enemies. Like others before, their rivalry drives them on to greater things

2013-02-27T03:33:00.000-08:00

They are the best players in the world but they will never be best friends. When Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi go head-to-head on Tuesday night, there will be a brief acknowledgement but nothing else.

Really, though, they should go out of their way to thank each other. Every time Ronaldo sparkles for Real Madrid, Messi inevitably tries to go one better for Barcelona. The results have been spectacular and it means Spanish football is now essential viewing.

But watch them in the second leg of the Copa Del Rey semi-final – and again on Saturday in la Liga – and you will see nothing more than a cursory handshake. You don’t need to be a body language expert to appreciate there is no love lost between these two.

Kocha Azam afungiwa kwa kumwaga radhi dimbani

2013-02-27T03:32:00.000-08:00

Arsenal fans up in arms about unspent £123m cashpot while rivals leave them in the dust

2013-02-25T22:52:00.002-08:00

Arsenal chairman Peter Hill-Wood has attempted to head off a backlash from fans after new figures confirmed that the club have a cash pot of £123.3million.

Hill-Wood insisted the club’s board are aware of the need to win trophies despite the latest accounts showing large interim profits based on the sale of their best players.

He warned shareholders that the ‘self-sustaining’ model was here to stay as the Gunners recorded pre-tax profits of nearly £17.8m for the six months to November, yet claimed the club remained ambitious on the pitch.

‘Our desire is to make everyone connected with Arsenal proud of the club,’ he said. ‘We know that comes through winning trophies but also through the way we do things and that will remain our constant guide.

‘While we have our sights set on a 16th straight season in the Champions League, our ambition is to win trophies. Nobody is more focused on that than our manager Arsene Wenger, majority shareholder Stan Kroenke and the board. It is what we work towards every day.

‘Let me be quite clear that our intention is to keep our best players and recruit new talent to make us stronger.’

The latest figures include the sales of Robin van Persie to Manchester United for £24m and Alex Song to Barcelona for £15m. Figures for 2011 showed pre-tax profits of £49.5m, which included the sales of Cesc Fabregas, Samir Nasri and Gael Clichy.

Arsenal’s property portfolio is performing well, and as well as the massive cash reserves, there is a new Emirates partnership worth up to £150m over the next five years and an improved TV deal about to kick in this year.

They also charge among the highest ticket prices in the country but have not won a trophy for eight years.

Fans are fed up with seeing the owners and well-paid executives bank the proceeds of their loyalty. They also question the board’s ability to supply the necessary expertise to improve Wenger’s team, even if the money is available.:

Roger Federer rallied past Tunisian wild card Malek Jaziri 5-7, 6-0, 6-2 Tuesday to reach the second round of the Dubai Championships.

The second-ranked Federer is looking for his sixth title in Dubai. He next faces Albert Montanes or Marcel Granollers.

Federer was playing the 128th-ranked Jaziri for the first time and had said he expected a "tricky'' match.

The Swiss star was proved right in the first set when Jaziri broke serve to go up 6-5 and closed it out with a backhand down the line.

The 17-time Grand Slam champion dominated from that point on, racing through the second set in 23 minutes and breaking Malek twice in the third set.

Poor start

"We were both not playing really well in the beginning. We were both missing a lot of first serves, or him in particular,'' said Federer, who served 10 aces.

"I think because I couldn't take advantage, I went from 'not so good' to really 'not so good' - and then he got better naturally.

"For me, it was important to sort of react and make sure I don't panic.''

Seventh-seeded Andreas Seppi of Italy swept aside Paul-Henri Mathieu of France 6-3, 7-5, and eighth-seeded Mikhail Youzhny of Russia came from behind to beat Blaz Kavcic of Slovenia 1-6, 6-1, 6-3.

Coming off a quarter-final loss to Julien Benneteau in Rotterdam, Federer said the tight match would serve him well for the rest of the tournament.

"It was good in terms of nerves, getting out there and having to survive difficult moments,'' Federer said.

"Moments like this where you're just not feeling quite right but you get it done. Then all of a sudden you feel like now you're in the tournament.''

It was Jaziri's first match of the year because of a knee injury.

"I give everything today. I did my best,'' said Jaziri, who has never beaten a top-10 opponent.

Top-seeded Novak Djokovic opens Wednesday against Viktor Troicki in an all-Serb match. But he got a workout Tuesday, teaming up with brother Marko in doubles against Nikolay Davydenko and Dick Norman but losing in a champions tiebreake

Simba win at last as Azam close the gap

2013-02-22T03:23:00.000-08:00

Dar es Salaam. Hamis Mcha hit a brace to lead Azam FC to a 4-0 thrashing of clueless JKT Ruvu in a Vodacom Premier League match at the Chamazi Stadium yesterday. The victory takes the Chamazi moneybags level on points with league leaders Yanga who have 36 points, but have a game in hand.

John Bocco and Abdi Kassim scored other goals to leave the army owned outfit cutting frustrating figures at the end of the game.In Mbeya, Simba bounced back to a winning way, albeit with a wafer-thin victory of 1-0 over hosts Tanzania Prisons at Sokoine Stadium.

Simba, who struggled throughout the match to contain the spirited wardens, held on to the solitary goal scored by Amri Kiemba in the 26th minute. This is the second victory for the Msimbazi giants in four outings, which takes them to 31 points, five adrift of Yanga and Azam.

At Chamazi, Azam had no mercy on relegation threatened JKT Ruvu with Mcha registering his name on the score sheet barely two minutes into the game.

The Zanzibar striker lashed onto a Hamid Mao’s cross to coolly slot the ball past a hapless Shaaban Dihile.
Azam continued to haunt the visitors with an attacking brand of soccer, but a counterattack in the 10th minute gifted JKT Ruvu a penalty after goalkeeper Mwadini Ali fouled Samuel Kamuta in the area.

However, hopes of a quick equaliser went up in smoke after Kisimba Luambano fired straight to the shot-stopper

.
The visitors gained momentum after 15 minutes, but their attacks were well dealt by Azam defenders.

JKT Ruvu had a lion’s share of possession midway through the first half with Mussa Mgosi missing a host of chances.
In the 34th minute, Mgosi went close to drawing parity after being set up by Luambano, but with Ali to beat, he lofted the ball over the crossbar.

JKT Ruvu paid for their profligacy in the 45th minute when Humphrey Mieno threaded the ball through to Bocco and the latter planted it home with ease.

The teams went to the breather with the home side enjoying a 2-0 lead. Azam picked form where they had left and took the score beyond JKT Ruvu’s reach in the 46th minute through Mcha.

After the goal, JKT Ruvu came into the game with some telling attacks, but kept missing the target through Samwel Kamuta, Mgosi and Hussein Bunu.

In the 72nd minute, Azam sealed the score through Kassim whose long range screamer gave Dihile no chance.
Azam face a test of character on Saturday when they face Yanga at the National Stadium.
Yanga, who have enjoyed relatively easy fixtures over the past two weeks, had their coaches Ernie Brants and Fred Minziro at Chamazi.

Now the world's best footballer has his OWN range of boots (but perhaps Messi could have done with them in Milan...)

2013-02-21T04:19:00.000-08:00

Maybe Lionel Messi could have done with a pair of these last night. Here are the new signature boots - designed by the world's best footballer - that he will debut in the Spring.

But by then it could be too late to see them in the Champions League. The Argentine superstar had a rare off-night as Barcelona suffered a last 16 first-leg defeat by AC Milan.

Now they need to overturn a two-goal deficit against the Italian side when they meet again on March 12 at the Nou Camp.
