My boy, Isaac, is TWELVE on December 2nd. I can't believe he is only 12. Why do I say that? This boy, Isaac, has always acted so grown up and mature and for him to be only 12 amazes me. He and I have had adult conversations even before he hit kindergarten! He can give great advise (I have needed it more times than not, trust me!) Don't get me wrong. He has had a LOT of kid moments in between, but he is such a great intellectual...and I have a lot of fun with him too! He is the only one I can ask, "does this outfit look o.k.?", or "do these shoes or these shoes look good?". He gives it to me straight, and I will go upstairs and change.

So, Happy Birthday to my 22-going-on-12 son! I love you so very much!

Hey All!

Happy Birthday to me, Happy Birthday to me, Happy Birthday Dear Leah, Happy Birthday to me (last part in four part harmony!). Yes, I know I am singing to myself while typing but who could wish me a better Happy Birthday than the very person who has lived these thirty someish years? ME! So here I am at 4:00 a.m. singing to myself (yes I need therapy, are you offering?)

My birthday is in all actuality on November the 26th (BLACK FRIDAY) and I am going to be shopping till I'm dropping, so I am celebrating a little early. I love having my birthday on and around THANKSGIVING. This season of thankfulness is a treasure to me...I know Christmas and the shopping has been crowding in (but do you blame the retailers in this sluggish economy?) on our pure, undefiled Thanksgiving, but just because that happens doesn't mean that I am any less thankful or blessed. I am what I choose to be (choose you this day whom you will serve: as for me and my house we will serve the Lord) and thank you Lord for my birthday and how it falls around Thanksgiving each year. It is a great opportunity that I have to be around my whole family, and yes it is just one day so we can all get along great. I get to kill two birds with one stone!

I know I didn't buy any Christmas flavors, but I can't get into the pine and tree smells...I am sorry, they just make me gag just sniffing them a few seconds. I was going to get the Christmas Cupcake, but the Vanilla Cookie smelled stronger, so I went for the Cookies! These are the first Yankee Candles I have ever bought, they make my house smell like Martha Stewart and Paul Deen's house all rolled up together in a sweet little glass jar, ya'll. Sorry, I was in my Paula Deen groove.

So Happy Thanksgiving and Happy Birthday to me!

A Fire During The Rain

She looks good until...

Wednesday morning I got a call from Mom. I could tell from her voice somthing was wrong. She told me that she had just called the fire department and that Dad's John Deere Combine was on fire! I was pacing around not knowing what exactly to do. I told Mom that I would go over and see if I could help.

I turned on to road 1075 and I could see a huge ring of smoke...That was not comforting in the least! I got there, and there was only smoke, Dad got the fire out....He had to use 3 or 4 fire extinguishers! I directed the volunteer firefighters where to go. After a while I walked up there, and one of the said, "I don't think we can save this one." See, this was the third combine that caught on fire! I was about to loose my breakfast and I hadn't even eaten! What I didn't know, the fire started sometime in the night and it was on fire all night and the morning!

So, Dad talked to his insurance company, and he got another combine. It arrived today! The kids are loving on her! They love the new steps, they are a lot easier to get up and down on! The auger is huge and higher than the 4200.

We celebrated Noah and Abigail's birthday. To make this banner, go here. They were both born in September, so we always have them a big party...together. Isaac and Caleb get a little party because they were born in different months...how is that fair?!?!? (btw, I have got to do something differently about that. let me add that to my Mommy-To-Do-List!)

Uncle Curt also has a September birthday, so I decided to make a cake with all three. I am trying to get better at making cakes. I like to do all kinds of crafts and projects, but the cake is the hardest for me to master. I am making great strides, but I am still wet behind the ears!

We had a lot of food and had a great time. It is so much fun to see them look forward to their birthday party's. I hope they remember them forever. You have to have a lot of food at a birthday party, am I right?

Hello all!

I have had a blog for several years now to express how I balance being a stay-at-home mom to four children, a preacher's wife, a homeschool teacher, and a crafter. I also have a blog * A Butterfly In My Stomach* for crafting, repurposing, reinventing, cooking, and any other compulsion that flys by! I have tried to stay away from crafting but the need to beautify my home and the total lack of funding for this has revived my love to craft. So when I get a butterfly in my stomach, I just take off. I study out a project in my mind (who writes anything down, anyway?)for days or weeks at a time and then I just do it. My chaos and compulsions make for a creative journey. God has a wonderful journey for us all...(I remind myself *and sometimes he reminds me* that I have to open my spiritual ears to hear him). God bless you all on your journey too!

I also love homeschooling my children. Our school name is Children Are A Heritage Academy. The kids wanted "ACADEMY"--it sounds so sophisticated! We have a great time at homeschool. There are ups and downs but that is just part of our journey. They teach me a lot while I am trying to teach them!

We use Abeka spelling for all. We have I's spelling, but N and A's spelling books are still in the mail. SO, I found a website that has Abeka's spelling words. I have the entire list for 2nd and 8th grade! Spelling City even allows the kids to learn how to spell and can even test them on a certain list!

What a Day!

Our days of homeschool are different everyday, but we have a certain schedule we follow...LOOSELY;-)

All of us:
1. Read a passage from the Bible
We have calendar time (What is the date, upcoming activities for the week, etc...)
What is the weather? (Have a K-gartner!)
Recite our address and phone number (stop when they know it)
States and Capitols (do a few each day until they know them all!)
Bible drills (10 commandments, 12 sons of Jacob, 10 plagues, 12 disciples, books of Bible...)

2. Each child (except K-gartner) has 5 folders. I have written what they are to complete each day for each child. They love reading what I have written to them! When they are done with each folder, they put a "check mark" after the assignment and they lay them facedown in their own "cubby". I then review them and stand them up in their favorite cereal box. Their assignments are waiting to be completed for the next day.

3. First they work on spelling
Second, they work in math
Third, writing
EACH CHILD HAS A DIFFERENT ASSIGNMENT IN THESE AREAS.

4. History (ALL)
We read the American Creed
We say the pledge of allegience

We discuss American History (explorations to the New World)
After notes, they copy neatly to pages for NOTEBOOKING. I like doing something concrete so they can go back and see their work.

GEOGRAPHY - we get the map out to show where countries, islands, oceans, seas...are at.

5. Science (ALL)
We learn a bird a week
We study all their characteristics
They draw the bird and then write neatly to pages for NOTEBOOKING.

We are also studying parts of insects and we have catepillars that are about to morph into moth's.

They do all of this before lunch! After lunch they have reading and exercise. Then they have free time for video games or just play.

We also have chore schedules. They do dishes, trash, clean rooms, etc...

I am going to make a schedule for hygenie. I am telling four children all day long "brush teeth, wash hands, take shower/bath, put deoderant on, clip nails, clean ears, etc..." The repeating of this mantra is a little too much!

We also explore in the woods and other things outdoors, but no picture to show.

Swimming Lessons June 14th-25th

We enrolled the kids in swimming lessons. We live right by a pond, so I wanted the kids to know how to swim. John really insisted!

Noah and Isaac graduated and can doggy paddle very well. Next year they are going to learn the back stroke and more.

Abigail and Caleb are still learning so they will remain in the level 1-2 class.

They have the floating move down pat.

Church Campout

John was in charge of coordinating a campout for all the kids (ages 4-80 ;-) @ Pleasant View. We all had a great time. The date was July 16th and let me tell you it was a scorcher! We were all very sweaty, so we were all glad there was a lake close by.

Mary and Freck fried fresh fish, John grilled, and all the ladies brought sides and desserts...We had plenty of food.

We had an activity (boys vs. girls, of course) where the kids had to find an item that was mentioned in the bible. They had a really good time playing....It was a close race but the girls won. The boys (Noah and Isaac) opened up and testified, Abigail led the singing (she was very shy, but came into her own after "I'm bound for that city"). Then John preached a message. We had a very good time.

Lastly, the kids went swimming. We had a cabin (thanks to Bro. William and Bro. Marvin) so Abigail, Caleb, and I slept in a very comfortable bed while the guys had to sleep on the ground in tents. Needless to say, John, Noah, and Isaac slept the next day....all day!~

We had such a good time. So glad with what God has blessed us with.

Homeschool is Cool!

School started at the Geary's August the 2nd. Pictures were not taken until a week later...we don't dress up for school, so when we go out, that is when the camera starts rolling!

I have done some major planning this year, and the kids love it. We are using a color-coded folder system. The latest homeschool trend is work boxes, so I used the folder system instead.

Each child has five different color folders for each subject. On a piece of paper I write what they must complete for M-F. I have a box at the end of each task that they check off. They love it and the day flies by. It also gives more time to bible reading, music, flash cards, you name it!

We are also notebooking. We write notes, then we have pages printed out for NEAT writing. They are doing well with this too.

Caleb has started Kindergarten. He thought that he had to learn to read the first day of school. He puts his hand to his head, and says, "Lord, give me strength." I then told him that Kindergarten is easy. Well, we went through the days lesson and now he tells everyone that school is so easy ;-P

Three educational philosophies by Karen Sargent

We live in a world of three competing educational philosophies: Greek, Roman, and Hebrew. It's vital that you know the difference.

In the Greek model, knowledge was the highest good. Socrates said, "There
is only one good—knowledge, and only one evil—ignorance." One need not look far to see that model in popular homeschool curriculum choices, authors, and convention speakers.

In the Roman model, power and entertainment were the prizes that life had to offer.
For Caesars and citizens alike, to rule the world and then enjoy the spectacle of gladiators and lions in the Coliseum was the highest goal. One need only look at
popular American culture to see that the Roman model is alive and well today.
● ● ●

Never doubt that we are making disciples through the process of education. So are private schools and public schools. The only difference is which master each disciple will serve.

We all serve a master—
and so will our children.
● ● ●

The Hebrew model placed the highest value on the dual objectives expressed by Jesus when asked what was required to have eternal life. “Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind” and “. . . Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.” (Matthew 22: 37, 39b)
In Hebrew thought, having a vital relationship with both God and our fellow man was the highest priority. The Bible goes on to praise knowledge. Proverbs 18:15 exhorts us "The heart of the prudent getteth knowledge; and the ear of the wise seeketh knowledge." In Colossians 2:2-3 Paul says, "That their hearts might be comforted, being knit together in love, and unto all riches of the full assurance of understanding, to the acknowledgement of the mystery of God, and of the Father, and of Christ; In whom are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge." Did you follow that? God says if we're wise and discerning we will acquire knowledge; we will seek it out. But He also tells us that the treasures of all wisdom and all knowledge are hidden in Christ. If we're to acquire wisdom and knowledge, Christ must be a part of our homeschool planning process, because all wisdom and all knowledge are hidden in Him. And if our ultimate goal is to produce disciples of Him, we must teach our children to love God and to love their neighbor.

Which philosophy are we to embrace: Greek?
Roman? Hebrew? As Christians, I trust most of us can agree that the Hebrew model ought to be the basis of our educational philosophy. Power and entertainment are passing pleasures of this world which serve no eternal purpose. Knowledge for the sake of knowledge, the Bible says, simply makes us proud and arrogant. In 1 Corinthians 8:1 Paul says, "Knowledge puffeth up, but charity edifieth." Both the Greek and Roman models are hollow.

Your Child's Love Language

Determining your child's love language will enable you to achieve family closeness and provide a solid emotional foundation for your child while homeschooling with your curriculum from Alpha Omega Publications®. One simple test you can use to find your child's love language is to ask your child this question:

"If I was gone on vacation for several weeks, what would you like me to do when I returned home?"

• Tell you how much I missed you. (words of affirmation)
• Bring a gift back for you. (gift giving)
• Spend the day playing together. (quality time)
• Make your favorite meal for supper. (acts of service)
• Give you a big hug and kiss. (physical touch)

Although your child may say he would like you to do all of these, ask him to pick out the one action he thinks is most important. This will allow you to pinpoint his particular love language and enable you to communicate your love to him more effectively.

So, what are some practical ways of meeting your homeschooled child's need for love? Depending on your child's particular love language you might do the following:

Words of Affirmation - Mean what you say. No flattery allowed.
• Write encouraging comments like "great job" on daily papers.
• Offer sincere compliments when he demonstrates positive character qualities with siblings.
• Be polite and use "please" and "thank you" liberally.
• Praise him verbally as often as you can for both his efforts and successes in school.
• Pray aloud with him daily and ask for God's blessing on his life.

Gift Giving - It doesn't need to be expensive, just thoughtful and age appropriate.
• Purchase items (favorite candy bar, coloring book, etc.) from dollar-value stores to use as daily rewards on schoolwork.
• Choose a gift or plan an activity he has been wanting and give it as a reward for a successful school year.
• Create a surprise love bucket. Each week, fill the bucket with educational items like art supplies, an educational computer game, a new reference book, a new notebook, or other study items.
• Make homemade gifts. These gifts may even spark an interest in carpentry, sewing, photography, gardening, and other life skills.

Quality Time - Undivided attention required. No multi-tasking allowed.
• Cherish learning together. Don't hurry through school lessons.
• Take all the time necessary to work through questions he doesn't understand.
• Plan an individual homeschool field trip covering one of his subjects.
• Skip school and plan a regular date once a month to do something fun.
• Watch a movie, play a board game, or read a book together.
• Play a seasonal sport activity together for physical education class.
• Work together on a hobby he enjoys.

Acts of Service - Be creative. Go beyond the normal duties.
• Help him paint and redecorate his room.
• Plan a special party or activity for his homeschool friends.
• Wash and wax his car.
• Volunteer to help in his Sunday school class or youth group at church.

Physical Touch - Warning! This love language is not for young children only!
• Give kisses and hugs without measure!
• Cuddle in a chair while you share a book.
• Give a backrub while he is studying at the computer or the table.
• Give a pedicure or manicure as you study lessons on health.

Winter Wonderland

We had a fun time in the snow...The wind was brutal so we didn't stay out too long!

Caleb brought his push mower out to "mow" the snow. It was a hard job!

Noah loves playing with Buttercup, Peebles, B-dog, and RoseBud! Such an animal lover!

Cute...Skirt refashioned into an apron dress for Abs

I had a skirt that was just too high above the knee for me (yes folks it is possible), so I refashioned it into something for Abigail. I just cut a backward "C" on both sides. Then I made a very long bias of a coordinating fabric and I sewed them to each side. I added a pocket as an embellishment...Abigail loves the pocket. This looks cute with jeans or leggings underneath. The dress can even be used as an apron....I keep all kinds of old clothing around...you never know when a REfASHION will hit you!

Here is a complete layout of the skirt-turned-into-apron-dress. I cut each side for the armholes and just made bias for each side....Had all the material...yay!

Hey all! I have been making pies, pies, and pies. I have made beef, chicken, apple, and even fried apple pies. Making your own crust is so inexpensive...and it tastes so good. I made this chicken pot pie with my oldest son, Noah. We had a good time..his favorite part is the egg wash at the end!

3 cooked chicken breasts cut up
1/2 onion, cut up
1 carrot, cut up
1 stalk celery, cut up
1 clove garlic, cut up
1/2 cup of peas
4 tablespoons of butter
2 tablespoons of flour
1/2 tsp of poultry seasoning
1/2 tsp of salt
1/4 tsp of pepper
1-2 cups of milk

Pie ingredients
1-1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/3 cup shortening
4 to 5 tablespoons cold water
1 egg, whisked

Saute the onion, carrot, celery and garlic in 2 tablespoons of butter. Cook on low until it is translucent. In another skillet, melt 2 tablespoons of butter. Once melted, add 2 tablespoons of flour. Make a rue. Gradually add in milk until it is the consistancy of cream or gravy. Add the chicken, sauted vegetables and the thawed peas to the cream mixture. Preheat oven to 350.

While oven is preheating and the chicken/cream mixture is congealing, make the pie crust. Stir together flour and salt. Using a pastry blender, cut in shortening until pieces are pea-size. Sprinkle 1 tablespoon of the water over part of the mixture; gently toss with a fork. Push moistened dough to the side of the bowl. Repeat moistening dough, using 1 tablespoon of the water at a time, until all the dough is moistened. Form dough into a ball. On a lightly floured surface, use your hands to slightly flatten dough. Roll dough from center to edges into a circle about 12 inches in diameter.

Get your 9-inch pie plate and spray with cooking spray. Place chicken cream mixture in the pie plate. To transfer pastry, wrap it around the rolling pin or fold it twice. Next, place the pie crust on top, being careful not to stretch pastry.
Fold under extra pastry. Crimp edge as desired. Next, with cooking brush, brush the egg on the top for a golden crust. Cook for 30 minutes and you have a wonderful meal coming your way!
