Art, Collecting,Home Decor are the expression of your own individual creativity or imagination.We See Things As We Are...This allows the individual to express things toward the world as a whole.The " visual arts" at its simplest, is a form of communication....it may seek to bring about a particular emotion or mood, for the purpose of relaxing or entertaining the viewer. Art moves people. It stimulates and motivates the viewers. Look at how simple posters were used to promote propaganda during the war years. Look at how advertising uses visual images to market products.Art can stimulate conversation. It can stimulate thought. It can make people take pause, think and ask questions. It can even cause people to question what they think and change the way they think.. Art draws people. People travel around town and around the world to see art. It promotes tourism. It even attracts business and consumers.Art has been perceived by some as belonging to some social classes and often excluding others but this is no longer true today.With widespread use of the World Wide Web a much broader spectrum of artists entered the field, often completely independent from art institutions....

Let me start off by saying that everything I talk about in this website comes from first-hand experience. I have been collecting a variety of art pieces for the last 10 years. I am a passionate art collector with a fondness for the unusual and the weird and they range widely in style and format. I am not passionate about art as an investment, I love having art in my life.Art Collectors usually don’t conform to fads and crazes; they buy because they enjoy the relationship with art that transforms a part of their lives. They do not buy for investment purposes; they collect because they have discovered a certain appreciation for a particular artist, a certain media, style, process, subject matter or other value they find in an art form. A happy collector seeks information and insight. Of course I have too much but I am reluctant to part with most of them.I still consider myself a novice art collector..

Most people will not trust their own judgment as to what is art. They believe people whose job is to criticize art . These critics tell you when a work of art is good, when it is bad.Art is too personal to rely solely on another person´s judgement. One must experience art first hand, not solely through the point of view of someone else.The second that anyone tries to place a strict definition on art, art itself is destroyed but pointing out shapes and images of a work is possibly helping others to understand the work. Collecting is about using visual art to explore feeling and emotions.....it’s about seeing feelings, making them visible to yourself and others.The collectors who really matter are not necessarily the very richest or even the ones with the most pieces.....They are those who encourage interest in the art they collect and share their treasures with the public....

Starting Your Art Collection

Art collections can be started simply from the need to fill blank walls.The art work, by its very presence, lends a sense of place to a space and that this sense should be one of beauty and balance to the casual viewer. I like a variety of items so I have no preconceived notion of what art is.A first time buyer has to develop an eye for art..I did a lot of research before deciding to do this and discovered I was very passionate about it.Whenever I visit someone's home, the first thing I notice is whether or not they have original artwork displayed. Sadly, in most cases, they do not. It's a shame...

I started out just decorating my home with original art then I branched out to my relatives and friends homes. It got to the point my family and friends were always anxious to see just what new treasures I had discovered.It was like a treasure hunt when they came to my house.My take on this is I just buy what I like. If it just sits on the wall and no one notices it then it's wallpaper, not art. If the artist does not feel a passion for his works, that fact will usually be reflected in the art.If it moves me spiritually then I will want to look at it frequently. There is always continuous feedback between the collection and its owner. ...

Most people I encountered buy art,sculptures and other collectables with the hope that it will be valuable someday.Collectors also like to make their own rules.The number of items, quality, time period or medium for example, are all personally determined by the individual. The art collector has to own the work, not just observe it. That way they can look at it over and again at their leisure because each canvas has a soul that can only be appreciated in person.I also like to touch the art.The brush stokes give me a sense of the emotional state of the artist.Heavy paint gives me a sense of intense and strong emotions while light brush strokes(mostly in watercolors) gives me a feeling of happy,light and carefree.

A completist, unlike a collector, gathers without meaning and indulge obsessions past any reasonable point. The tasks and trophies have meaning only in the completion of the task itself.It is about satisfying a deep desire to have the complete collection of a particular set of items.Money is of little concern to the completist and they will travel to the ends of the earth to find what they are looking for. ? It’s a harmless enough urge, maybe even a healthy one, until it becomes so intense that it comes at the expense of other experiences or people.....I have decided this is not for me...Isn’t it a little sad when the collection is complete and you discover there’s nothing left to find?

The active art collector Buys all the time, no matter where they are or what they are doing..They tend to go to and own art museums and galleries and have traveled widely . Finding the best art means learning who the best most qualified dealers are, and understanding how to interact, communicate, and negotiate with them to Get pointers on art dealer etiquette, how to spot the best dealers, who to trust, and who to watch out for. Casual art collectors tend not to go looking for specific artwork and often find it while out looking for something completely different. Paintings and prints are sold in a variety of places from garage sales to malls to antique shops to auctions and street vendors.I fall into this category.Color catches my eye first, then shapes and form in art.. Art collecting is more of a favorite pastime for me and therefore no pressure.I can take my time and look..if I don't buy no big deal ....maybe I will the next time..it just depends on what mood I am in and if I find art that really moves me.The most important point to remember if you fall into this category of collector is to buy what appeals to you.

Have you ever explored other forms of art besides drawing/painting?I have...I still have the same

philosopy when it comes to buying...I buy what like....I do tend to gravitate toward unusual shapes and sizes.Make sure to examine the piece very carefully for cracks and missing parts.I bought this handmade piece simply because I LOVE the abstract design, it's so unique, fresh and beautiful to look at! ...it is also a great conversation piece and there are lots of places to put it in my home due to the neutral colors....I do have some with a lot more color but this is one of my favorites...

Sculpture is one of the oldest art forms. Sculpture is the branch of the visual arts that operates in three dimensions. A three-dimensional object is solid rather than flat, because it can be measured in three different directions, the height, length, and depth.Since the surface is not flat like a painting it can be viewed from front,back and side. This allows for a 360 degree thought process when interpreting it.

It is a type of visual art, produced by carving and modeling materials such as stone, metal, wood and clay.
Sculptures often show historical figures as well as figures from myths and stories, but they can also be abstract shapes and forms that don’t represent a particular object, but instead may represent the artist’s mood or feelings. Sculpture in stone survives far better than other works of art because the materials used are usually hard therefore most sculptures that stood the test of time are made of stone. Most ancient sculpture was brightly painted, and this has been lost due to time and the elements.

Stone carving

The earliest forms of images were carved onto rock surfaces.This technique is the process where natural stones are shaped with controlled movement. The surface is removed with processes such as pecking,carving and abrading. Architects sometimes like to include stone carvings in the structure of the building.This gives the building a very unique and artistic look. This form is called hard stone carving and makes use of stones such as jade, rock crystal or carnelian.This is a form of public art.

Bronze sculpture
The metal content of bronze in fine art sculptures is generally an alloy of around 90% copper and about 10% tin. Small percentages of zinc and lead may also be added to improve strength or handling in the casting process. The most important element is the combination of skills related to creating a final work.

Patina is the surface coloring applied to the finished bronze, generally an acid treatment applied with heat. This duplicates the natural oxidation which occurs over many years of exposure to air. Bronze is a popular and valuable choice for cast metal sculptures due to its property that its alloys expand slightly just before they set in a mold, thus filling the finest details. Bronze sculptures also have great ductility and strength which makes them an ideal choice for making sculptures that are to be placed outdoors.

Wood carving
This technique involves a wood piece being carved and cut into a desired shape to make a sculpture. The tools used to make the cuts in wood sculpturing are usually handheld and can also be powered. Such sculptures are typically used for decorative purposes indoors. Some wooden furniture may also have such carvings formed out on them, to give them an authentic and artistic look.
Carving is the act of using tools to shape something from a material by scraping away portions of that material. The technique can be applied to any material that is solid enough to hold a form even when pieces have been removed from it, and yet soft enough for portions to be scraped away with available tools. Carving, as a means for making sculpture, is distinct because the skill requires much more work including a steady hand.

Today sculpture is still the leading method of expressing and commemorating both historical figures and events.Most new buildings today have some kind of sculpture in front of it.The best examples of long-established form of public art can be found in many of the best art museums.

Decorating With Art

I enjoy decorating with my collected art.I have made many changes over the years as I gain in experience.The first thing to remember is that you don't have to show off everything all at once. It is more fun to display part of your art collection and change it every once in a while especially if you change your color scheme or theme. The wall color should not interfere with your display. Busy wallpaper, for example, would distract your attention from the object you're trying to highlight. Most often, a soft, solid color serves best as a background, though a bold color is in order if the object is pale.I have learned to group like items and even to stand some of it up on the floor against the wall and use easels.

Modern Gallery Look: this is particularly nice in hallways, lobbies and stairwells, give each piece ample breathing room. I put small pictures on narrow walls like hallways and stairwells.

Above a Sofa use large pictures on a wide wall and place the art at eye level.

Cluster Arrangements: Tightly group an even number of pictures together to give a statement or a focal point. This works on either large or small wall spaces, depending on the look you want.

White space is good and it makes the art you do hang stand out.Art is supposed to be eye level.Like paint color, artwork can immediately establish or change a room's mood. Not only can it pull the room together, but you can use it to create a style uniquely your own.

The most interesting collections are built around a theme, reflecting the vision of the collector .

Entertaining Rooms should include bright colors both in the art and on the frame.

Modern Rooms Use striking black and white photos are a natural choice for a modern and sophisticated look.

Calm Retreat: To reinforce the mood of a nestled, cozy retreat, use artwork with neutral, earthy colors and a horizontal landscape subject.

You can even mix and match different styles to create a unique style of your own....I think this style is referred to as Shabby Chic...

Present one large focal point that can make a lasting impression. The proper use of impact pieces is a popular idea...When someone views your art , you will be able to talk about your collection and perhaps get them interested in similar items or starting their own collection.

Prints and canvas reproductions of masterpieces are wonderful additions to any home, but they fail to deliver the depth and texture that connect us emotionally to the artist.I am very fond of partial abstract canvas art.

The Holiday season is upon us once more.Holidays are magical times, full of happy thoughts that shine in our memories forever.Holiday collectors love this time of the year.They get to bring out all of those holiday special pieces they have been saving for years.....some passed down from one generation to the next.I have none so I had to start my own tradition...Here are some of my treasures....I love these Christmas boxes.I have had them for about 5 years now and I still love them as much as when I first bought them.They are steel boxes with lids that open and very elaborate christmas scenes craved over the entire outside of the box.The holiday season is a special time to cherish fond memories and make brand new ones. Holiday collectibles are wonderful mementos of each passing holiday season, and they're a lovely way to evoke special memories and reminiscences with your family and friends. You will probably find your collection of holiday collectibles growing each year.

Abstract Art

I must admit I am still trying to wrap my brain around abstract art.Some of it I am drawn to though.Abstract art uses a visual language of form, color and line to create art which exist without any reference to known images in the world.Abstraction is completely void of reality in depiction of imagery in art. This departure from accurate representation can be only slight, or it can be partial, or it can be complete.
Partial abstracts alter for instance color and form in ways that are obvious but you can still recognize shapes,images.Total abstraction bears no trace of any reference to anything recognizable.Three art movements which contributed to the development of abstract art were Romanticism, Impressionism and Expressionism...
Although Cubism ultimately depends upon subject matter, it became, along with Fauvism, the art movement that directly opened the door to art abstraction in the 20th century.There is an anything goes attitude that prevails for abstract art with no firm and clear direction.The marketplace is the judge of merit and price.

Abstract paintings are different. They have designs, shapes or colors that do not look like specific physical objects. As such, abstract paintings are a lot harder to understand than classic paintings. When you look at abstract art, you often have no idea what it is you are actually seeing.Every painting is created within a particular environment, and if you do not understand that environment, you will never be able to appreciate what the artist has to offer you.Anyone can create an abstract art painting because it is the most forgiving style of all, because anything goes, as long as your abstract artwork can give you the feeling you have expressed yourself.What you see on the canvas reflects the environment in which the art was created. Most of human life exists unconsciously, below the surface of perception and beyond the reach of voluntary, purposeful thinking.

The more abstract a work of art, the less preconceptions it evokes in the mind of the beholder. Abstract art gives us a way to get in touch with the unconscious part of our existence and evoke deep seated feelings and emotions and keep the conscious distractions to a minimum. , even if we don't realize what we are doing.... This personal take on art will naturally enriches a viewer's experience of an artwork.Understanding abstract art does not come naturally for everyone.Abstract art is not "about nothing". It is about form, color, line, texture, pattern, composition and process and whether or not all this things when mixed together will produce something pleasing to the eye and mind..................

Shock Art

Shock art is modern art that USES disturbing images, sound or scents to create a shocking experience and it is an increasingly marketable art. Shock art is a hot sell among high-end collectors, galleries, auction houses and museums. I have some forms of shock art but I have my limits as to what I will collect.

I like this picture but on some level it disturbs me and would never have in my bedroom or any other room I visit frequently.It is a source of controversy and some people might find it offensive.I bought it because it makes me think about my mortality and how we are all connected in one way or another.I also like the artist style and depth..I think the artist wants you to think…….......

If you concentrate on the shock value of anything too much, you don't get beneath the surface to the more important issues that are trying to be raised ... Sometimes shock value is what the artist uses to get you to look at the work, but then they also expect you to dig deeper. Sometimes it is to show that life isn't always beautiful. Shock art” clearly isn’t shocking to the artist who made it. He or she isn’t offended by what they’ve created, or else they wouldn’t have made it in the first place….right?????
What makes you think? All too often we live our lives with little or no time for pondering the information that is penetrating our brains and our souls. All media is designed to influence your thinking. Even art.

One can't help but wonder if the fascination with the shocking is merely a novelty to get people in the doors or if it represents where the art world is heading. Throughout history, artists have created works that confront viewers and seem shocking in their efforts to make a statement about society.
The purpose is simply to disrupt and destroy convention in order to explore and understand but with the purpose of building something better or laying the framework upon which someone might build something better.The only justification for art that shocks, in my opinion, is that it reveals a shocking truth and that the artist is sincere in wanting to express that. Shock art should stir up emotions you didn't even know you had!" What could be more shocking than that?
Great works of the past are works to which you can return time and time again. They renew themselves before your eyes. They're unlimited, and that's what makes them great.
Today, these works are considered masterpieces and are worth millions of dollars. Who's to say the same won't happen with the art of today?

Such art exhibits are becoming more common among artists, who correlate fame to the amount of press coverage they generate. Most Shock art seems designed purely to shock. Shocks wear off, just as consumer wants and desires do, and repeatedly getting this shock value requires increasingly higher voltage of shock. They use things which many people don't even recognize as art, and subjects which to many ordinary people are extremely offensive.
Some people thrive on being controversial. for many, it is the only way they can make a living. The more controversial, shocking and outrageous they are, the more attention they get, and often, the more money they can make. . They are getting rich by offending the sensibilities of many.

I personally do not think that the average America can ever live with this kind of art work. "They can see it as a novelty or as social commentary ... but it's not something anyone is comfortable living with. This isn't the kind of art that people feel good about. It isn't soothing or contemplative Would you like a painting of a crucifix submerged in a urinal hanging on your living room wall?I think not…. it would be fun to speculate as to just what these artist were "on" when they created these pieces. We constantly chose and evaluate but are afraid to admit it.You think of your home as place of tranquility where you can leave the world behind.We don’t want the outside world invading our space.
A moral code limits our possible art choices down to a certain level. Shock art affects us in the way that it does because it shows that someone can disregard our own moral code with no serious consequences. We want a bit of nonsense and shock, but we also want some order and familiarity . Many people of faith believe that there will be consequences for these actions in the afterlife. They believe they are witnessing someone condemning him or herself to an eternity of torment and punishment.

Social commentary and shock art play the same role: They evoke thoughts and deep emotion about something, but I still think the average person will not put this in their homes even though it clearly illustrates something we Americans cherish highly …freedom of expression..........

Sadly, in most cases, they do not. It's a shame...

I bought this piece of art at a yard sale while out looking for something else which I did not find.
It is a calm setting of a farmhouse that could be located anywhere.The artist is not famous but he is to me.
I grew up on a farm .The nearest neighbor was about a mile away.It was very quiet and the air was fresh and clean.We had few toys so we used out imagination and the great outdoors.It was great!!!!Most of the time I did not want to come in until I was called at dark.There were games like kick the can,hopscotch,tag..etc.It is funny how you take these things for granted until you no longer have them.

I now live in the city where there is lots of noise,dirt,smog and I can reach out and touch my neighbor.I rarely go outside except to go to my car..partially because I am scared to death of some of my neighbors..mostly their children..some are criminals who would not hesitate to knock me in head and rob me.Outside exercise is out of the question.Your best bet is to go to a gym..at least you are in a controlled environment.When I was young the city life appealed to me very much mostly because that is where my friends were but as I got older not so much any more.I guess I have gotten tired of it.I long for the country again.I miss the peace and quiet and fresh air.

This painting reminds me of this quiet place and it inspires me to find a way to get back there because I now realize that is where I belong…I take frequent trips on the weekend to my family home in rural America and most times I just walk and smell the flowers..even the weeds smell good....It's funny how Things have a way of coming full circle…Who Knew?

Great way to get away from the old fashioned “names and dates” method of teaching history, right? Add some visual art and people are interested in history again!

What materials would have been available and used for different timelines of history?What was in style?Understand the world they lived in. Most think of art as part of the present—as something people can see and touch.One or more artists made a piece of art at a certain time and in a specific place, even if no one now knows just who, when, where, or why. Although created in the past, an artwork continues to exist in the present, long surviving its times. The first painters and sculptors died 30,000 years ago, but their works remain, some of them exhibited in glass cases in museums built only a few years ago.Art appreciation and collection does not require knowledge of the history of an artwork but Art history does.

The aim of art history is to determine the original meaning of artworks. Art historians seek to understand why the art look the way it does but also of why the artistic events happened at all. What unique set of events gave rise to a particular piece of art.Art objects are historical documents that can shed light on the peoples who made them and on the times of their creation in a way other historical documents cannot. Art history is constantly expanding and now includes, computer-generated images, whereas in the past almost anything produced using a machine would not have been regarded as art.The material used for a statue or painting—bronze, plastic, or oil-based pigment etc... may not have been invented before a certain time.A painter might have painted a person or a kind of hairstyle, clothing, or furniture that was in style only at a certain time.

One thing I have noticed over time is people are very visual.Most scientists agree that about 75% of your learning occurs through your vision..Most would rather look at a picture than read about it. People like using the part of the brain that is emotional and creative to organize information in a personal and simultaneous way.
They visualize an image of something in their mind when trying to remember it.It is said The greatest form of art appreciation is imitation. These visual learners may also be artistic and enjoy visual art and design,have a strong sense of color, and is very color-oriented. The online environment is well suited for this type of learner because graphical representations of information can help them remember concepts and ideas. With exposure to art periods, styles and various artists, you can develop a greater understanding of composition, line, form, and other creative elements.

I use this when looking at art and it helps me to determine if the art is good or bad ....therefore making it a personal experience.

It’s great to see something beautiful out of a piece of wood that had its own life once but can still be used for something else.

I personally do not have a tattoo but every time I see one I want to ask ....why do you do that to yourself?" The responses were simple ...I love art - of all kinds.I thought it was the most exotic and beautiful medium I had ever seen. Most get tattoos based around things like: fairies, butterflies, dragons and flowers . Tattoos are special not only for the designs, but also who designed them.
I appreciate the artistry of tattoos but also enjoy the mystery of learning about someone without having to talk. We all judge, and first impressions probably carry more weight than they should. Whatever your feelings are about tattoos, one thing is for sure: There's definitely more than meets the eye.

We crave individuality and self expression. And now many people wear their artistic expression. We are having more trouble communicating with each other than ever before. So, it's not surprising that there's a growing trend toward communication via body ink. We don't have to talk, we just have to look.

I chose not to have a tattoo because the beauty of life is that it's unexpected and we change with our experiences. What we stand for and believe in at 18 is very different than 35 or 60. If we stood for one thing in life and it never changed, then this would be a very boring place to be.
Entranced as I am by the strange beauty of blue, green and red limbs,I cannot imagine getting a tattoo myself.
It all hurts,but some tattoos hurt more than others.The more extensive, rich, careful and beautiful the work of art that is pounded by a needle into your body, the longer you have to endure that pain.
The images created in tattooing may seem permanent ,but it is generally limited to the life of the wearer, which is often shorter than that of conventional drawings and paintings.The prospect of preserving skin seems morbid, it’s worth acknowledging that similar preserved tattooed canvases are available for viewing at medical museums.

It’s a form of expression and art,I think you should get a tattoo that you know would be timeless, that you will never regret and that you’ll look at and always appreciate.You find yourself ignoring clothes and looking at an inky foot, a spider-web neck, a dragon shoulder. The decorations shine up skin, make it different and mysterious. artists trained in traditional fine art are beginning to take on tattooing and brought with them all sorts of tools and techniques. Tattooing is recognized by government agencies as both an art form and a profession and tattoo-related art work is the subject of museum, gallery art shows across the United States.

People who are into tattoos know that it's an art.For most people, collecting is a simple hobby that produces enjoyment. People may collect anything from dolls, to stamps to bottle caps, literally anything. But in some cases the need to collect can become a compulsion. Never put a collectible plate or other item in the dishwasher — most are not dishwasher safe. Porcelain collector plates may be carefully washed by hand with a mild soap, and spray-rinsed. Most porcelain figurines may be lightly dusted or spray-washed and rinsed with mild soap and a gentle spray of water. Do not immerse figurines in water. To avoid problems with dust and dirt, many collectors favor frames and display cases with protective glass, especially for valuable or intricate items.

If you are not sure how to clean an antique or collectible item the best advice is do nothing.What took nature hundreds or thousands of years to create can be destroyed by you in a moment of carelessness or impulse and can never, ever be restored.According to statistics, more paintings and art works are destroyed each year by inept art restoration and cleaning than by accidental burning or fire.

Collectors who have already narrowed their collecting horizons to the creations of a particular producer may want to join a club that focuses on this producer's work. A potential collector may wish to chat with collectors with similar interests in specialized forums via the Internet. The Antique Roadshow is a favorite public tv program of mine because it lets you see what other people have collected ,history of the items they have collected ,how the owners use them in their everyday lives and last but not least what the experts think about the items (this includes appraisals,history and quantities.etc).The experts will also give you some good information about collecting,art and other related topics.

Many collectors enjoy making a plan for their collections, combining education, stimulation and experimentation to develop a personal collecting style. And even those who reject the notion of "planned collecting" can refine their "selection skills" with some background information on the how-to's of collecting.

The most popular fields in collecting have specialized commercial dealers that trade in the items being collected, as well as related accessories. Many of these dealers started as collectors themselves, then turned their hobby into a profession. There are some limitations on collecting, however. Someone who has the financial means to collect stamps might not be able to collect sports-cars, for example.
I tend to visit local artist shops,yard sales,secondhand shops,,street vendors for my artwork.They seem to have a better and greater variety of subject matter.There is also the cost.They are much cheaper than art galleries.I tend to relate more to the local artists than faceless museums.I get to talk to some of the artists and see their new work as they become available.I have been to museums but the "unknown" artist appeals to me more.
When I go out of town whether on business or social visits the first thing I do when I have time is visit the local art fairs,shops.street vendors..maybe a museum to look for art pieces I want.Discovering artists local to the region you are visiting can be a fun purpose when looking for that special reminder of your holiday travels. It seems as if any area you visit has its own style of art to offer.Often you can see features in paintings that are representative of the locale.I never know beforehand what the art piece might be that moves me ...I just know it when I see it.
