Satpati Lighthouse is located in the fishing village of Satpati which is near Shirgaon in the Palghar district of Maharashtra.

The Satpati Lighthouse is around 35metres tall at little shorter than the one at Arnala. Infact the lighthouse is so tall that I could be seen from a distance. The lighthouse is painted white and red from the outside. The directions to it are tagged on google maps.

There is a fee of Rs.10 for Indians and timings to visit the lighthouse. The lighthouse is not open to public in the afternoon. We paid the fee and visited the premises. A spiral staircase, next to the walls of the circular lighthouse leads us to the top. the spiral staircase might give vertigo issues at it is quite tall.

Finally we were atop the lighthouse, a balcony there provides one with a 360 degree view of the sea (horizon) and the land around. The cool breeze blowing was also refreshing. One is not allowed to go near the lamp of the lighthouse.

We then headed back to the base of the lighthouse.

We traveled by car to the lighthouse. The ST bus stand and rickshaw stand is very near to the lighthouse premises. As there were no ST buses there, not sure which buses come to Satpati. There is provision for food and refreshments near the ST bus stand.

Arnala beach is located in Arnala near Virar in Maharashtra. Arnala Fort is located very close to the beach.

We decided to travel to Virar station by a local train and from there board the State Transport bus to the beach. One can also travel to the beach via a private vehicle or rickshaw. Directions to Arnala beach are tagged on google maps.

Refreshments are available near the beach premises.

We reached the beach around 5 PM like always. The sun was shining with cool breeze blowing. The waters appeared like glittering gold due to the sun. There were a couple of locals who were out for a swim in the waters. We didn't venture in the waters.

Sad to say but there was a lot of garbage on the shores of Arnala Beach. Hopefully beach cleaning needs to be undertaken. i guess it was high tide due to which the garbage would have landed on the shores.

Arnala is a black sand beach. We clicked a couple of photos and then waited for the sun to set. Got some wonderful photos here. We could see the island of Arnala which houses the Arnala fort in a distance.

We then decided to head back home.

Suruchi beach in Vasai near Mumbai in Maharashtra

As we (Fathima and me) stay in Vasai, we traveled by rickshaw to the beach premises. Pls note: The rickshaws don't run on meter here and hence they will charge a lump sum amount. We were charged Rs.150 but post negotiation the rickshaw driver came down to Rs.100. There is a rickshaw stand near the beach premises. Else the closest State transport bus stand is around 45 minutes away from there (walking). The best form of transport is private vehicle here.

At the beach premises there are plenty of places to eat and drink.

By the time we reached the beach it was around 5PM. Though the sun was beating us down with the heat we kept going due to the breeze.

Suruchi is basically a black sand beach. We walked to the stretch near to the boats anchored in the water (Bhayandar side) as it was less crowded there. Fathima decided to build her sand castle. Here is the pic of her castle.

We walked on the sand hand in hand with our footprints in the sand which were soon to fade away with the next wave lashed on to them.

Not sure if you feel the same, but when we go to the beach, it brings the child back in us. We play in the sand, build castles in the sand and finally dip our legs in the waters.

We didn't bathe in the waters as most do, as the water color was not very appealing.

We then sat and watched the sun go down the horizon. Soon it was starting to turn dark and we were being attached my mosquitoes so decided to head back home.

Dahanu Beach in Dahanu in Maharashtra

Dahanu Beach is located in Dahanu in Palghar district in Maharashtra.

If you wish to drive down then instructions for the same are available on google maps. Public transport is available from Dahanu railway station. There are plenty of places dine and stay near the beach premises. Rents may vary depending as to how far or close you are from the beach premises.

Dahanu Fort is located very close to Dahanu Beach.

By the time we reached the beach premises the sun had already set, but the skyline was beautiful. We enjoyed the view sitting there till the mosquitoes came around and started to buzz us off. There are plenty of fast food stalls at the beach, there are also camel rides available at the beach premises.

As the tide was low, children were playing football on the beach. The health conscious were on their evening walks on the beach.

It is very relaxing on the beach, no matter how tired you are. The sea somehow calms one down. We stayed at a friends place and then headed to the beach the next morning. Again the tide was low. We felt calm and relaxed on the beach.

We then headed back home.

Vandri lake and dam in Maharashtra

Vandri lake is located very near to Mumbai in Maharashtra. The directions to it are tagged on google maps. Not sure if public transport is available to reach it, we traveled by Manohar's car.

It took us around 40 minutes to reach the lake premises. 40 minutes from Vasai Phata. We left early in the morning as we wanted to reach there before sunrise. The roads near the lake premises are narrow and winding so drive safely there.

Finally we were at the banks of the lake. The sun had just risen from behind the hills. The view was just amazing. the rays of the sun on the clouds formed an amazing pattern in the skies, the reflection of the sun on the glittering lake waters was nice too. The hills ranges in distance we created a nice picture.

Manohar put his hand in the water and it was not cold at all. We could see steam in a distance not sure the reason for the same. The locals around didn't know the cause of it either.

The men from the village would come there, to brush their teeth and finally have a swim or should I say a bath in the waters before they head for their daily chores.

The women would sit at the banks of the lake and wash the clothes. No wonder the the white clothes worn by the villagers are so white. LOL.

The quite lake, the sound of the birds was soothing to my ears. Though we sat there just staring at the rising sun, we felt so relaxed and stress free. Though we are so close to the city of Mumbai, it felt like we were somewhere in the wilderness.

The villagers had instructed us not to visit the dam, so didn't go. Also there is a board at the entrance of the dam stating "No Trespassing."

We sat there for sometime and then headed to our car. We then noticed a huge tree. Maybe 2 to 3 stories high with a 360 degree leave cover all around. Something we rarely see in Mumbai. We then headed to the tree trunk. The green cover was dense. It would provide good shade and breeze in the hot summers.

There are no hotels around this location, so do carry food and water and please keep the lake and dam premises clean.

We then headed back home after enjoying the early morning sunrise.

Mangad fort is situated in Borwadi in Mangaon taluka in Raigad district in Maharashtra. The base village for the fort is Mashidwadi.

The directions to this fort are tagged on google maps. There are signboards on the road to, so you sure that you don't go off track.

We parked the car near Mashidwadi. Mashidwadi is a small village comprising of around 20 to 30 houses. It is also the base village to Mangad fort.

By the time we reached Mashidwadi village, it had already started raining. The time was now 3:30 PM on watch. We didn't get any rain cover, but that didn't stop us from visiting the fort premises.

There are signboards on the way, but we still managed to get lost uphill and were travelling in the wrong direction uphill, finally

Dominic took a de tour and met a villager and then we traveled via the stone boulders to reach the Temple of Goddess Vinzai. The villager had informed us to keep the gate of the temple closed else the monkey's go enter the temple premises.

From the temple one has to travel via the stone cut rocks , walk on a tall grass patch and again on stone cut rocks to reach the Main Entrance of the fort.

As it was raining, the stone was wet and had turned slippery due to which we were not able to get a good grip on the rocks, there was also moss growing on the rocks which was making the journey difficult.

Dominic went uphill, he then motivated Manohar and Me to join him, we finally gave in and managed to climb the fort.

A orange painted sculpture of Maruti (Hindu God) is present here. There are a couple of water tanks (water is not portable) and a cave on the fort premises. The cave can be used for lodging purposes.

The thick vegetation atop the fort premises and the rains made travel difficult for us. We then made our way and reached the orange colored flag posted on the fort premises. The view from here of the neighboring forts and valleys is just amazing. I am just hoping that my phone doesn't get too wet in the rain and stop working. Still managed to get a couple of shots.

Ideal time to climb up the fort is around 45 minutes, 20 minutes to see the fort and another 30 minutes to return to base.

By the time we reached the base the time was around 6 PM.

We had one more fort to conquer, the Surgad fort near Pali, but we decided to skip that fort as we were running short of time, we then decided to head back to Mumbai.

On the outskirts of Mashidwadi village we noticed the remains of the Mahadev Mandir, the podium of the temple is made of black stone. Nothing much remains except for the statue of Nandi.

Out of all the fort we saw today, Avchitgad and Talagad was the best as it had a lot of ruins atop of it, Birwadi fort just had the Main Entrance which was intact, felt sad as we couldn't explore Ghosalgad in entirety, Kude Caves no doubt were a good and clean set of caves, the actual adventure part was when we climbed the Mangad fort.

The entire journey starting and ending at Ghatkopar Station, inclusive of food, stay and travel cost us just Rs.2155 each.

After visiting Kude caves we traveled for around 12 KM to reach Tala Village.

We asked the locals for directions to trek up to the fort. Watch out for this signboard at the village. Note there is no provision to park vehicles here, but food and water provision is available in the market area.

There are no steps but the stones are placed like steps to climb up the fort premises. Now watch out for this second signboard, the way up the fort leads from here.

We walked over loose soil and small stones to reach the fort premises.

As we get near to the entrance of the fort, the climb becomes a bit tricky, the rock cut stairs get narrower and to top it they were wet. Which made or climb difficult. But we still managed to reach the main entrance.

At the main entrance, there is sculpture of Maruti (Hindu God) Painted Orange. Near is a cave. Currently water is filled in the cave premises, but it can offer refuge when dry.

We then walked to one of the bastions of the fort. The bastion offers a fantastic view of the surrounding. As there was little to no wind and hot sun, we decided to go up to the top most point of the fort for exploration.

From the bastions a series of steps takes one to the top of the fort.

Atop the fort are placed a couple of water tanks (water not portable), broken structures and a Shiv Temple.

There is no shade atop the fort, no trees up here.

Atop one of the bastions sways the orange flag, we then crossed the water tanks and walked to the other end of the fort.

We were not able to spot cannons atop the fort.

The fortification is not intact and broken in certain places.

It took us around 30 minutes to reach the top, 30 minutes to explore and another 20 minutes to reach the base.

History doesn't state as to who built this fort, but Adilshah of Bijapur, Shivaji Maharaj, Siddhis of Janjira, Peshwas and finally British had control over this fort.

The time was now 11:30 AM on my watch, we braked for lunch at Indapur. There we decided that we would travel to Nizampur from there inorder to see the Mangad Fort.

The journey offered breath taking photos of the surroundings. the hills in a distance capped with due, the long winding roads were just amazing to travel on.

One has to park the car on the main road and then walk on the muddy road to each the caves premises. The road comprises of loose soil and small rocks and it is uneven, so it is best not to get a vehicle here, else the tire can get punctured. After walking for 30 minutes we then get a glimpse of the caves.

History states that these caves were built in the 1st century.

The caves looked identical. The first cave, had a Stupa within its premises. At the entrance we could see coconuts broken and kept and some garlands, meaning that the villagers offer prayers here. We also saw inscription on the cave walls, not sure what they meant though.

The small water tanks near the caves, had gigantic frogs sitting next to them, they didn't even budge when they saw me coming close to them to take a photo. The water from the water bodies doesn't seem portable.

The cave which had the face of the elephant, was the best amongst the caves. It had sculptures near the elephant head, artwork at the base of the cave, writings on its walls, sculptures within the cave and also a Stupa. I am guessing that this was the main prayer hall.

I find myself at peace here. There is no noise in the caves, total silence. Hence caves were built by the monks in the wilderness.

Some caves are located on base level and a few caves are located on the first level, a series of steps takes one to the first level.

The caves are being looked after, there is no graffiti nor litter around the cave premises. Guess what I found a Swachh Bharat Abhiyan banner here.

It too us around 30 minutes to see the caves, post that we walked for another 30 minutes to reach the car. We then headed over to see the Tala Fort located near Tala Village.

Tala Village in Raigad District of Maharashtra.

Tala Village is around 16 KM away from Ghosala base village for Ghosalgad fort. Directions to reach are tagged on google maps.

By the time we reached Tala Village, the time was around 730 PM. The village has shops on either side of the road, selling fresh fruits and vegetables, fish and chicken broilers for meat lovers, there were sweet shops, clothiers and footwear shops too. It was like a mini market. There is BOI branch too.

The village also houses a petrol pump and motor repairs shops. The petrol rate is Rs.2 higher than the price in Mumbai.

There were many tum tum here. There is also a small ST bus depot here. Buses ply to Roha from here. No buses go to Murud. We were amazed to hear that buses ply to Mumbai too from here. Time table of the bus depot attached. The time table is subject to change.

There is also a Sulabh Sauchalaya in Tala Village, it is next to the tum tum stand, from the outside it looks shabby but the toilets are clean within. Urinal free and stool is Rs.5. Rates subject to change.

Now we had to find a place to stay for the night, we learnt from the locals, that there is just one hotel in Tala. MTDC hotel (Shinde Plaza) located on the outskirts of Tala Village. The rooms were not that great, they quoted a price of Rs.1000 for Non AC and Rs.1700 for AC rooms. The rooms have hot water facility and western toilet. One cannot make choices as it is the only hotel. We managed to get a room here. We did try negotiating but were informed no negotiation.

Beer is available near MTDC hotel. Though we didn't have Beer, this is FYI.

We had Indian Chinese cuisine for dinner and it was finger licking good.

The next morning, we woke up, had breakfast in the form of vada and kanda bhaji along with tea at Hotel Sai Kripa and started our journey to Kude Caves located around 12 KM away.

Ghosalgad Fort located near Roha in Raigad District in Maharashtra

After visiting Birwadi Fort, we traveled for another 32 KM to reach the Ghosala Village, the base village for the Ghosalgad Fort.

There is no information, as to who built this fort, the villagers were not aware of it either, all they knew was that Shivaji Maharaj had ruled over this fort.

The time was now PM on my watch. we parked the car at the entrance of Ghosala Village and then asked the locals about the whereabouts of the fort, they pointed to the hill behind the village, saying that is Ghosalgad fort. They informed us that the trek route starts from the temple located a couple of feet up.

We reached the temple, there is a small trek route between the temple and the water tanks, if you travel by this route and check the trees for arrow marks then you will reach the top.

As it was the end of the rainy season, we were not able to see the route and hence we started climbing via a small path, which is not the route to the top. We stumbled upon loose soil, thick vegetation on the way. Finally in about 30 minutes we were at the top.

Note, there is no Main Entrance to visit the fort, one reached the fort premises by crossing the broken fortification, the steps near the fortification are quite tall, but due to the thick vegetation growing around it, we were hardly able to see it.

Now, how do we go about was the next question, we saw a small cave here and also the Chor Darwaza. Once you enter the Chor Darwaza a steep descend takes you down the hill. Is this all that the fort had to offer. NO. As I saw a lot of fortification, on the blogs I had read, Dominic tried to check for trails to lead somewhere on the fort premises, but sadly we were out of luck, due to the thick vegetation, that made travel even more difficult.

After spending a couple of minutes there, we finally decided to head back as it was 6PM on my watch and that we had to be down before sunset.

On our return we two villagers near the temple, they informed us that the way up the fort is via the second wall, on which a banyan tree is growing. we did see a banyan tree there, but were not aware that we had to climb it to walk on the fort walls to reach the top.

They informed us that there is nothing much to see up there apart from water tanks, a cannon and some fortification. They informed us that the entire fort premises can be seen in 30 minutes time. They also informed us that a steep climb, takes one to the top most point of the hill, the view from there is amazing.

We then walked down to the base village, there is provision for food and water here. No hotels for accommodation though. We saw tum tum plying people but there was no sign of a ST bus.

The village premises were decorated for celebrating Navratri in the night.

We then decided to travel to Tala Village, the base for Tala Fort.

Birwadi Fort is located very near to Chanera in Raigad District of Maharashtra. Jai Bhawani Mata Mandir (Birwadi) is located very close to the fort premises. After exploring Avchitgad Fort near Medhe village, we traveled to Roha, as it was afternoon we decided to break here for lunch.

The distance from Avchitgad fort to Birwadi fort is around 25 KM away. The directions are tagged on google maps.

Around 3PM we were at the entrance of Jai Bhawani Mata Mandir (Birwadi), if we climb up the steps we reach the temple. we met a villager there, we asked him for directions to visit the fort, he informed us that there are two ways of reaching the fort premises, the tricky one is from behind the temple premises, he requested us not to go via that route and instead walk on the green grass to the left of the temple. He informed us to walk till we see a farmhouse on our right, from there onwards start climbing the fort premises.

Again, the trek route consists of loose soil, small boulders which are slippery, so we had to travel with extreme care so that we don't slip. Mind the tree roots on the way, finally we saw two bastions on either side of the main entrance. The bastions had banyan trees growing over them. That all the fortification that is left.

We saw a water tank on the fort premises (water is not portable). It took us around 20 minutes to reach the top. 15 minutes to see. Not sure if we missed anything on the fort premises as we were surrounded by thick vegetation.

Again the fort premises offers a fantastic view of the hills, valleys, fields, cluster of houses. The greenery around was soothing to my eyes.

It's been a long time, since I had been on a trek. By trek I meant climbed a fort, as of lately I have been visiting land forts around Maharashtra, so I decided to do some easy treks between Roha and Mahad in Maharashtra.

As I was the man in charge of the itinerary, we decided to visit Avchitgad Fort, Birwadi Fort, Ghosalgad Fort, Kuda Caves, Tala Fort, Mangad Fort and Surgad Fort in a three day trip.

It had not been raining for the last couple of days, so we were hoping that it would be dry and sunny on the trip. Fingers crossed.

There are two ways of reaching Avchitad Fort. The directions to the fort are tagged on Google Maps. One can either travel via the Mumbai Pune Expressway (Toll Road) like we did, exit at Khalapur and from there crossed, Durshet, Pali, Bhise and finally Medhe the base village for Avchitgad Fort.

The other route is the Old Goa route, from Panvel, cross the Karnala Fort, Pen Nagothane , Bhise and finally Medhe the base village for Avchitgad Fort.

We reached Medhe Village around 10:15 AM. The reason why it took us time, is because we braked for breakfast on the way. Parked the car near the temple. Inquired with the locals regarding the directions to the fort.

It was a sunny day, we decided to carry 2 liters water to quench our thirst, after all we were climbing hill forts after a very long break.

History states that Avchitgad Fort was built by the Shilahar Dynasty. It was later taken over by the Nizam of Ahmednagar, Shivaji Maharaj, the Peshwas and finally the British.

Though it was not raining that they, it might have rained before as the soil was damp.

We crossed two wells made of black stone, the water in it is not portable though. The trek to the fort leads from here. One has to travel on loose soil, small boulders to reach the top. To top it we had thick vegetation and mosquitoes for company as we were wearing shorts.

Midway up the fort, we saw a couple of stones placed near each other. One of the stones had a garland placed around it. As stone had the word "Veergali" written on it in Marathi (local language). Maybe it is created in remembrance of soldiers who died fighting on this fort. Here, we saw another route which leads to the fort from Pingalsai Village.

We took a couple of breaks midway, finally in about 50 minutes we were at the top of the fort. How do I know, I saw the bastion (though it was not intact, it had banyan tree growing over it).

We crossed the Maha Darwaza, there were no wooden doors, just a arc shaped entrance to visit the fort premises. Next to the Maha Darwaza we spotted this animal inscribed on the rock. Not sure which animal it is. If you know then please mention in the comments below.

The fort offers a fantastic view of the surroundings, blue skies, white clouds, shades of green on the hills and valleys below, the closest railway station Nidi (Konkan Railway), cluster of houses in a distance. The view was just amazing.

We wasted no time, we started exploring the fort, on the fort are placed three cannons at different locations, the first and the third can be easily located. I want you to visit the fort and find the second cannon.

We then saw a octagonal shaped pond, it has steps to reach the base of it, it was filled with water, the water is not portable.

There is a Shiv Mandir in the fort premises, with a statue of Nandi, Ganpati and another two deities (not sure who those deities are)

There are a series of water tanks, placed near each other (water is not portable). There is also a stone carving (that of a God, not sure the name of the God)

There is fortification within the fort premises, though the exterior walls have broken down. There is a flag hoisted near one of the bastions of the fort. Some more water bodies on the fort premises.

It took us around an hour to see the fort premises. The wild vegetation made it a bit difficult for us to travel on the fort premises.

The sun had now hid itself behind the dark clouds, we decided to descend the fort, before it starts raining.

As we were descending the fort, we met a couple of trekkers who too had come to visit the fort premises.

In about 35 minutes we were at the base (temple, where the car was parked).

There is no provision for food and water at Medhe Village, if one comes to the main road, then it is available.We refreshed ourselves and then headed to visit BirwadiFort.We did see buses playing from Roha and Pali on the main road.

Dharur Fort is located in Dharur city, in the Beed district of Maharashtra.

After exploring Dharmapuri fort, we travelled via Ambajogai to reach the fort. Directions to the same are tagged on Google maps, the road that Google maps had selected was superb, though the distance between both forts is around 72 KM, we still reached Dharur within 1 1/2 hours.

The village is located very close to the fort premises, there is provision for food and water in the village.

The fort has a long history, it states that there was a old fort here called Mahadurga, the fort has been conquered by mains rulers in the past.

Look at this pic, doesn't the fort fortification look amazing. the bastions also look good.

What we did notice is that, work is being carried on the renovation of this fort, which is good. But it was dusty in the fort premises.

What we did come across is that this fort is a mix of land fort and hill fort, its main entrance is via land, and has got valleys on the other three sides. A very strategic way of building a fort from defense point of view.

At the entrance there are two huge bastions. As the fort walls are low in height, there are holes in the walls, used to fire at enemy soldiers.

This fort has got plenty of bastions within its premises.

The renovated fort walls are broad at certain places, if there was a ramp leading to these walls, we would have got the car, Hehe.

There is a water body both within and outside the fort premises, water is not portable.

There are a couple of structures within the fort premises, there are no signboards stating what historic significance they hold.

There is also a Pit (Muslim saint or holy man) in the fort. The walls of its enclosure are painted white.

There are a couple of tombs in the fort premises. Not sure who they belong to.

Within the forts there are many broken walls and Darwaza.

The view of the three valleys around the fort walls is amazing.

This fort is huge, it took us around an hour to explore it. We were not able to see any cannons on this fort.

Next what, we again had lunch (chinese cusine) at a local streetside eatery and then headed back to Mumbai. Mumbai was around 450 KM away that is roughly travel time of around 12 hours.

This trip was different from our regular trips, some of the land forts we explored on this trip were outstanding. though we didn't have to climb, we just loved to get lost in its abundant history.

Dharmapuri fort is located very near to Ambajogai. It is on the road which leads to Ahmedpur from Ambajogai. Directions to the same are available on Google Maps.

After visiting Nanded Fort, we decided to take rest at Ambajogai. So we decided to first check out the Govt Guest House, if we could get a place to stay there, we were lucky to get a place to stay for the night, at a cost of Rs 400 for two. Dinner was again Chinese cusine at a local streetside eatery.

Ambajogai, is a small town, which has got provision for food, hotels,banks and ST bus stand.

It was at Ambajogai Govt Guest House that we learnt that there is a Fort called Dharmapuri nearby. We were informed that the fort is around 30 KM from here on the way to Ahmedpur. I immediately started by research on the internet to check as to the whereabouts and also the looks of the fort. The fort looked appealing as the fort walls were intact.

The next morning, Manohar and me had to take a call whether to see the fort or not, as Dharmapuri Fort is around 30 KM away. But after exploring the fort, we had to again travel via Ambajogai to reachd Dharur Fort. Nevertheless we still decided to visit the fort.

Due to a wrong selection of roads, thanks to Google Maps, it took us little less than 2 hours to reach Dharmapuri Fort, the road was so bad that we had to drive at speed of 20. It even affected the car suspension.

Finally we were able to see a glimpse of the fort in a distance, the fort bastion looked amazing. We parked the car in the base village and from there walked up to the fort. Please note that there is provision for food and water in the village.

After climbing a series of steps we reached the fort entrance. There was wild vegetation growing all around the fort and to top it, the locals also come here for their nature calls. Shameless people.

Not much is known about the history of this fort.

There used to be a Maha Darwaza to enter the fort once apon a time, currently it is filled with rocks and only a small portion is kept open, like a Chor Darwaza to enter the fort premises.

It was a small fort which could be done in around 30 minutes.

There was plenty of wild vegetation within the fort premises.

Like always we decided to climb on the walls and then try exploring the fort. As it is a land fort the walls are not very tall in height, they would have been a storey or two high.

What should I say, the fortification of this fort is intact from the outside. The bastions are really big and offer a fantastic view of the surrounding. There is a lake nearby the fort, we could see women washing clothes by its bay.

On one of the bastions is a "Pir" (Muslim saint or Holy man). after walking on the fort walls, we decided to get down and explore the fort in the wild vegetation.

We were able to see this inscription on the fort walls. Not sure what it meant,a s there were no signboards around. We also saw different types of stone fitted into the fort walls, these stones didn't belong here and were bought from elsewhere.

There were two rooms in the fort premises, the entrance to them was via the Chor Darwaza. Nothing in them. But above the Chor Darwaza was a inscription on the room wall.

There is also a big well in the fort premises, but due to the thick vegetation, it is a bit difficult to reach it.

After exploring the fort premises, we heard children screaming, it was then we realized that there was a monkey in the fort and that the children were trying to get rid of it.

We then headed back to car, to see the last fort on our itinerary, Dharur Fort.

Nanded Fort in Nanded district in Maharashtra

Nanded Fort is located in Nanded district on Maharashtra. It is located very close to the River Godavari.

We parked our car near the main road and then walked it out to the fort. There is provision for food and water here.

Nothing much to see in the fort premises. The fort offers a fantastic view of River Godavari.

The two huge yellow painted water tanks, provide water to the neighboring areas.

There are a couple of new built structures, but they are not open to public, not sure if they are Govt offices. The watchman was not aware of it either.

Sadly the Nanded Fort didn't meet our expectations after exploring fantastic forts like Paranda Fort, Ausa Fort and Udgir Fort.

We then set our GPS to Dharur Fort, it was around 165 KM away from Nanded Fort. The time was now 5PM on my watch, we decided to brake for the night at Ambajogai.

Kandhar Fort is located in Nanded districit in Maharashtra. After exploring Udgir Fort we traveled with the directions provide by Google Maps to reach here. We drove around 65 KM that is around 2 hours to reach this fort premises.

Again this fort too has a moat around it. Something similar to Paranda Fort, Ausa Fort and Udgir Fort.

The fort is open from 9AM to 5PM all days. There is no entry fee.

The design of this fort is very similar to Paranda fort. On certain wall there are inscription in arabic. I am guessing. But it is translated and put up in English for understanding purposes.

One has to go through a series of Doors or should I say Darwaza to enter the fort premises.

This is perhaps the smallest Masjid I have been too on my trips. its the Masjid E Mohammadi. Please refer to this fort for more info on the structure. It had three arch doors and two thin minarets atop it. Next to it is small grinding circle with a shivling and a grinding stone in the middle.

This fort too has two levels of fortification for defense purposes. The inner wall which is heighted has been renovated but not the outer wall. It is still in ruins.

What we did see is this small tomb, painted white on a podium. It lies in the moat area. So it might have either been submerged in water or wild growth.

The bastions of the fort had cannons of different shapes atop them, These cannons too were huge. Being a land fort it was required for defense purposes.

Udgir fort in Latur district in Maharashtra

Udgir Fort is located in Udgir city, in Latur district in Maharashtra.

After visiting Kharosa Caves we traveled after taking directions from Google maps to reach, Udgir city. It took us around 75 KM i.e around 2 hours to reach Udgir city. The time was now 8 PM on my watch. Now we had two things on our agenda. Place to sleep and eat for the night.

Udgir city was like a oasis for our trip. it was self contained, there were banks, shops selling articles, eateries, hotels, railway station and ST bus stand here.

Sadly it was a night before Holi (Indian festival of colors), due to the Govt. Guest being full, we couldn't get a place to stay there and hence we had stayed at Sai Residency. We paid Rs.800 for non AC rooms.

We then had dinner (Chinese Cusine) New Famous Hotel. The food was just perfect for us. After the Wai roadtrip, this is the second time we have had fantastic Chinese food on roadtrip.

Like Paranda fort, Ausa fort, Kandhar Fort, Udgir fort too has a moat around it.

The next morning, we left for Udgir Fort. We reached the fort premises around 8 AM. As it was Holi (Indian festival of colors) the fort was closed. We were not aware of it. Once you enter Fort Maha Darwaza, there are two ways there, one leads to the fort (has metal Darwaza but under lock and key), the other leads to the Samadhi of Udgir Maharaj. The Samadhi is around 60 feet below sea level. There is a series of steps that lead to it. There is a small cave here and a huge well next to it. We were accompanied by a bunch of Police Inspectors and they advised us not to photograph the place.

As there is a temple in the fort premises, entry to the temple is only allowed. We did check with a florist, he said to wait till 9 AM and check if the fort caretaker comes around. We might get lucky.

The fort is open from 9 AM to 5PM all days. There is no entry fee. If it is a festival then need to check if the fort would be open.

Luck was by our side, the caretaker did come, we checked with him, he informed us that the fort would be closed as it was Holi. Bad news again. We did ask him, if we could make a exception for us as we had come from Mumbai to see this fort. To which he said that he needs to check with his Supervisor. We understood that we would have to bribe our way in the fort premises.

Luck was by our side again. We paid him Rs.100 to see the fort. We had the entire fort to ourselves.

Like Paranda and Ausa fort, this is a land fort with a moat around it for defense purposes. The fort has got two levels of fortification.

History states that this fort was built in the12th century by the Bahamani rulers. It has changed hands a couple of times after a series of battles.

We like always climbed up the walls to see the fort in entirety. The fort is in very good condition. Not sure if maintenance work has been carried out or not. There are a couple of structures within the fort premises also. They are not named nor the caretaker aware of their historical significance. The structures within the fort have grafitti all over them. Why do people love to spoil history, is something which I am not to get an answer to?

We also saw this structure which was painted white in color. It had Mughal styled architecture within it.. Sadly the white was covered with graffiti.

The fort has got wells within it. Water from the same is not portable. We were also able to locate this miniature version step well. I have seen a similar step well at Badlapur too.

Another interesting find was this structure painted in white, when we went inside, we understood that it was a Pigeon House. Meaning, pigeons from the areas around were kept here. When some news needed to be sent to the neighbouring areas, a pigeon which belonged to that area, was sent with the message tied to its leg. This is faster than POST too. This makes me think, how fast our ancestors were, we are smart today only due to technology.

After paying the bribe and taking a few group photos we then departed to see the next fort, Kandhar Fort. Udgir fort took us around 45 minutes to explore.

There is no provision for food and water on the fort premises, but it is available in plenty in Udgir city, a couple of minutes away from the fort.

After exploring the fort we departed to Kandhar Fort.

Kharosa Caves are located near to Kharosa village which is in the Latur district of Maharashtra, One has to travel on the Kharosa Leni road to reach the caves.

After travelling for around 25 KM from our last pit stop, Ausa fort, we finally saw a glimpse of the caves, high up in the hills. The sunlight flashing on them, added a golden shine to it.

There is a narrow tar road that leads to the entrance of the fort. After parking the car there, we finally decided to walk to the caves.

History states that these caves were built around the 6th century.

We started exploring the caves, as we still had sunlight around us.

These were Buddhist Caves, there were 12 caves in all. Some of the caves had beautiful sculptures on them. Some of the sculptures have eroded over time. One of the caves also has a huge Shiv ling placed inside with sculptures around it. There is also a sculpture of Ganesh on the cave walls. Maybe some of these caves are converted into Hindu Caves.

One of the caves is converted into a temple, it has a small Shiv Ling placed in its premises. The temple premises only is painted white. There is a metal gate to access the Shiv Ling, which is under lock and key. It has beautiful sculptures around its walls.

After these exploring these caves, we sat near the caves to have some fresh air, as we have only been traveling so far.

We then decided to travel to Udgir, as we had to see Udgirfort there.

After visiting the Dharashiv Caves we traveled per directions provided by Google maps to reach Ausa Fort. We traveled for around 70 KM to reach Ausa Fort base. We parked the car near the main road and from there walked to the fort premises.

There is no entry fee to see the fort, but the fort timings are from 9 AM to 5PM.

Similar to Paranda Fort and Fort Aguada, Ausa Fort too has a moat around it due to the short height of the fort walls.

The fortification near the Main Entrance of the fort is very unusual. A ramp has been created of stone so that one can reach the Fort.

The fort walls have got small openings in them, I guess it was used for defense purposes. The Main Darwaza or Door has been redone, the varnish on it is so bright that it stands out.

A tiny passage surrounded by fort walls with Jarokha (overhanging enclosed balcony) lead one within the fort premises.

A couple of broken stone sculptures and cannon balls can be seen on the way.

On a podium are placed 9 small sized cannons. There is a cannon ball in the mouth of one of the cannons. After crossing another Darwaza we finally enter the fort premises.

Not sure what this structure painted in white is near the fort bastion.

The fort is under renovation, as there are people working within the fort premises.

Like always the best way to explore the fort is to walk on the fort walls. We did the same. The fort walls have also been redone.

The fort bastions have cannons placed on them. Each of the cannons are unique as they are of different sizes.

The fort has two levels of fortification, the outside wall is smaller is height in comparison to the inner walls. There is no maintenance work carried out on the outer walls.

Within the fort premises is a huge well and unknown structures apart from the thick vegetation.

The entire fort can see seen in 45 minutes. Not much is known about the history of this fort.

Please note that there is no provision for food and water in the fort. Also I am not aware of the public transport system. But there are people staying outside the fort premises.

Dharashiv Caves are located in the Balaghat mountains in the Osmanabad district in Maharashtra.

After visiting the Paranda Fort, we took directions from google maps and reached here after travelling for around 75 KM.

Naldurg is another fort in Osmanabad district known for its fantastic fortification.

NOTE - There is no provision for food and water here. Only mode of transport is private vehicles.

History states that these Caves were built around 5th to 7th century. They were discovered in the 10th century, by the Rashtrakuta Dynasty. These were originally Buddhist Caves which were later converted into Jain Caves.

A tar road, leads to the caves entrance.There are two sets of caves on two hill ranges, facing each other. We decided to start exploring the caves near the temple premises.

There is grinding stone at the entrance of the temple premises.

The temple wall looks like a fort wall, made of small sized rocks. There are two small entrances to enter the temple premises. The temple kalash (top of temple) had beautiful artwork on it. The temple is dedicated to Shivguru and had beautiful paintings on the inside of soldiers at the entrance of the Shivguru.

The caves are all of different sizes. Grafitti artists have left their impression on the cave walls.

Some of the caves were huge, they has symmetrical carved pillars within them. with a sculpture of Buddha within it.

The cave premises have been re worked upon as certain caves have been painted and also the pillars have been redone.

There are sculptures on rocks all over the place.

The caves, which were later converted to Jain Caves, have statue of Mahavir within them and they are under lock and key. so one can only take photos from outside.

We then visited the caves on the other hill range, which are not in very good condition. I guess no one is looking after their well being. Though these set of caves looks more rustic in comparison to the ones near the temple, some of them have beautiful artwork near their pillars.

Both set of caves offer fantastic view of the surroundings, there is no civilization in a distance. No wonder the monks decided to mediate here.

Paranda land Fort is located in Paranda a small town in the Osmanabad district in Maharashtra.

After visiting the Karmala fort, we took directions from google maps and traveled for around 40 KM to reach the Paranda Fort.

Another amazing land fort we visited in Osmanabad district is Naldurg fort.

The entrance to Paranda fort is very near to the Paranda ST bus stand. The fort walls can be seen from the ST bus stand. One can board buses plying to nearby cities here. The ST bus stand also has a Sulabh Sauchalaya (wherein one can attend to nature's call and bathing)

As the fort is near the ST bus stand there is provision for food and water near the ST bus stand. But not inside the fort.

Paranda is a land fort, the fort bastions and fort walls were intact, which made me even more eager to visit the fort from the inside.

As Paranda is a land fort, the walls were a little more than a storey tall, so how would they protect the fort from the enemies. They built a moat around the fort premises.

History states that this fort was built by Mahmud Gawan of the Bahamani Sultanate in the 15th century.

The main door of the fort has been redone. Once you enter the main door, you have walls on either side and they have jarokha (overhanging enclosed balcony) from wherein one could see whoever is entering the fort premises.

A little history of the fort.

The fort has got two walls for fortification, the outer wall is slightly smaller in height in comparison to the inner wall. Need to say that the walls and bastions are intact. There is a newly constructed Shiv Temple between the fort walls.

We decided to climb over the inner wall to get a good view of the fort both from inside and outside. Placed on each of the fort bastions are these beautiful cannons. The cannons had beautiful art work on them.

The cannons at Uparkot Fort in Junagadh, Forts of Daman and Diu, Solapur Fort, Murud Janjira, Daulatabad Fort, Ausa Fort, Kandhar Fort and Udgir Fort too have beautiful cannons.

As it is land fort, the fort area is not much, the entire fort can been seen in entirety in around 45 minutes.

We then got down from the fort walls and decided to take a stroll within the fort premises, there were a couple of unnamed structures, not sure what they were.

We can across this storage room for ammunition, it housed cannons and cannon balls. Interesting. Haven't seen that before in the forts I have visited so far.

There is a huge water well in the fort premises. The water is not portable. But one can go a level below ground level via the stairs.

There is also a Masjid in the fort premises, It is under renovation, not sure if it is still in use.

Looks like the Govt or the ASI has finally taken some initiative to look after the maintenance of the fort.

We then headed back on the road, our next pitstop was Dharashiv Caves.

After exploring Bahadurgad Fort aka Fort of Pedgaon aka Dharmaveergad and Unknown Tombs near Jagdamba Devi Temple in Rashin we traveled here. Directions to the fort are tagged on google maps.

From a distance I saw a bastion, it was in good condition, but I was not able to see fortification near it.

We then asked the locals the way to enter the fort premises. They kept asking us as to who we would like to meet in the fort premises. I told them that we are here to see the fort and not meet anyone. To this they replied that the fort is occupied by people and that there is nothing much to see apart from the bastions, broken fort walls and the main entrance.

They were right, the fort has houses all within, I guess people have made it their home. Not sure how someone can built a house within the fort premises. Government property hai. Looking at the condition of the houses looks like they have been settled here for decades.

As Karmala fort is a land fort, It too has a main entrance to enter its premises. It has two bastions near the entrance. The door of the fort is made of wood. It had nails on the door and also a chor darwaza within it. There is also a temple just outside the entrance of the fort.

The fort walls are not intact either, they are collapsed or are on the verge of collapsing at certain places.

As Karmala is a city, it has plenty of hotels for refreshments and stay, it has a ST bus stand and also rickshaw stand nearby the fort premises. Walking distance.

History states that in the 18th century, this land of Karmala was given to Rao Rambha Nimbalkar as a jagir. He settled here later. He also built the fort and temples in the nearby areas.

The time was now 6 PM on my watch, we had to search for a place to stay. We got lucky and got a place to stay at a Govt Guest House at the cost of Rs.200 each. This is one of the best Govt Guest House I have stayed so far. As the directions to the same are not located on google maps, just to inform you that there is a huge ground near it.

We then had chinese cuisine for dinner, at a local eatery in the Karmala market.

The next day we had Paranda Fort on our itinerary.

Solapur fort and Akluj fort are the other forts we have explored around Solapur.

As we were travelling from Bahadurgad Fort to Karmala Fort we came across these Unknown Tombs near Jagdamba Devi Temple in Rashin.

Though we didn't enter the temple premises, I did go to see the three tombs. Tombs were made of stone. Some of the tombs had beautiful artwork near the dome. There was artwork near the entrance and also on the walls of the tomb.

Currently the tombs are used as a dumping ground, also there is no signboard as to who these tombs belong too. I did ask the shops on the main road, they told me that they migrated here from the nearby villages and towns for business purposes and were not aware of the history of the tombs.

Bahadurgad Fort aka Fort of Pedgaon aka Dharmaveergad are located in Pedgaon village in the Shrigonda Taluka of the Ahmednagar district of Maharashtra.

Chand Bibi Tomb, Ahmednagar Fort, Damadi Masjid, Faria Bhag Palace and Cavalry Tank Museum are some of the historic structures I have visited in Ahmednagar before.

It was just the two of us (Manohar and Me) I prepared the itinerary and Manohar took care of the driving. We planned to cover Karmala Fort, Paranda Fort, Dharashiv caves, Ausa Fort, Kharosa Caves, Udgir Fort, Kandhar Fort, Dharmapuri Fort and Dharur Fort on this roadtrip.

As decided we met at Ghatkopar Railway station on the eastern side around 5:30 AM. The directions to Bahadurgad Fort are tagged on google maps. Bahadurgad was around 250 KM away, we were sure that we would reach the fort by afternoon taking breaks into consideration.

We had breakfast in the form of Vada's at Joshi Vadewale in Pune.

By the time we reached Bahadurgad Fort it was around 12 PM. There is a village near the entrance of the fort premises. NOTE - There is no hotel here for refreshments. The villagers informed us that we can take the car and travel within the fort premises.

There is a Darwaza (Door) to enter the fort premises. It has a orange colored flag atop it swaying in the wind. The fort walls are not in good condition and have collapsed in certain places.

History states that Bahadur Khan was the administrator of the fort. Not sure if he built the fort. When Shivaji Maharaj got the news that around 200 Arabs had come there, he wanted to plunder their wealth. he made arrangements and was successful in plundering the Arabs of their wealth.

Once we entered the fort premises, we saw this temple. Shri Bhairavnath Mandir. By the look of it, it was an old temple, painted in vibrant colors. We also met a local sitting in the temple premises. Sadly we were not able to understand the information he was providing us with. He was definitely not speaking hindi or marathi. I am sure he might he speaking shuddh marathi, which is difficult to understand.

Around the temple premises is placed a diya stand. The stand made of rocks was painted white. Near the diya stand are placed small sculptures of Gods. Not sure as to who are those Gods.

The temple premises and the huge tree near the temple are the only source of shade on the entire fort premises.

There is a muddy path via which one has to travel to reach the different monuments within the fort premises.

On way, you will seen sculptures carved in the stone scattered across the ground along with stones used in the construction of structures in the fort premises.

We parked the car near Rameshwar Mandir. A little information on the temple in Marathi. Rameshwar Mandir, was built entirely of stone. The temple premises had sculptures of Gods within them. Also the entrance to the temple has sculptures around it.

We then moved to see the Malikarjun Mandir located a couple of feet away. A little information on the temple in Marathi. Again this temple was built of stone. It had carved pillars at the entrance. Sculptures of Gods within them.

We then moved to see the Daru Kothir, Not sure what it meant. there was an old structure here, completely in ruins with wild grass growing all around it. the structure had a small Moorish Dome atop it. Possibly a store room.

We saw this Bastion in the middle of the fort premises.

Finally we reached the main attraction of the fort, Lakshmi Narayan Temple and Baleshwar Temple, these beautifully crafted temples at the banks of River Bhima.. Remember River Bhima, we had traveled on it to reach the Palasdeo Temple, located in the water.

The artwork though similar on both the Lakshmi Narayan Temple and Baleshwar Temple left me speechless. It reminded me of the Shiv mandir in Ambernath.

We then visited the Pataleshwar Temple, the temple is still in use, it had a Shivling, statue of Nandi and sculptures places near it.

We then walked to the bastions of the fort. The bastion was at the banks of the River Bhima and offered fantastic view of the river. Due to wild vegetation growing within the fort premises we couldn't see much inside the fort.

We visited the final structure in the fort premises. It had its own Darwaza and walls around it. Though certain portions of the walls have collapsed, but the Darwaza is intact. It has two orange colored flags swaying in the wind atop it.

We then headed over to see the ruins at the banks of the River Bhima. Graffiti artists had been here before me.

Though we initially thought there was nothing much to see in the fort premises, the artwork of the temples was just amazing.

We then headed over to see the next fort, Karmala Fort.

Return journey to Mumbai from Jungadh in Gujarat

We had booked tickets from Junagadh to Mumbai by a AC sleeper bus belonging to Mahasagar Travels Limited. This was the third time I was travelling in a sleeper bus. AC first time.

All private buses belonging to Mahasagar Travels Limited plying to other cities depart from the Majevadi Bus Depot located very close to the Majevadi Gate.

The Depot, houses a waiting room, restrooms and cargo outlet. Our departed around 2PM and we reached Mumbai around 6 AM the next morning.

Due to the AC the bus gets a bit too cold, so one has to take the blanket and sit/sleep in the bus, again, there is less food and water intake but plenty of output as one has to frequently go to pee. Luckily the bus makes a couple of halts for the same.

Finally another journey to the land of the Nawabs of Junagadh comes to an end. Rich in architecture, Fort, Tombs, Vav's , Caves in Junagadh, Science Museum, Dam, Zoo and Gates to the city and to top it Vegetarian Thali and buttermilk. What a wonderful experience.
