Fuel usage in automobiles refers to the fuel efficiency relationship betweendistance traveled by an automobile and the amount of fuel consumed.Fuel economy and fuel consumption are reciprocal quantities.

The importance of fuel economy is simple - it saves you money. The way that you drive and maintain your car can also affect its fuel economy.

If a driver who travels 15,000 miles (24,000 km) a year switches from a vehicle with 10 mpg to 12 mpg average fuel economy (0.10 gallons per mile to 0.083 gallons per mile), 250 gallons are saved. A similar 20% improvement in exchanging a 30 mpg for a 36 mpg (0.033 gallons per mile for 0.027) vehicle saves only 83 gallons. Because mpg and fuel consumption are inversely related, both can be misinterpreted.[6]

For example, 20% lower l/100 km does not mean 20%, but 25% more distance. This comes from the following calculation: 20% is 0.8 times less fuel, therefore 100% / 0.8 = 125% of the original distance, or 25% further on every litre. Changing from 14 to 20 MPG saves twice as much fuel over a given distance as the improvement from 33 to 50 MPG[7]).

A measure of gallons per mile (GPM), such as gallons per 100 miles, provides a one-for-one comparison of the consumption for a given distance of driving. Unlike MPG, the GPM of one car can be subtracted from the GPM of another car to get a direct measure of fuel savings. Inversely this becomes a moot point to the driver who wishes to get the most traveling out of a tank of fuel. Here the MPG values give a clear measure of "bang for your buck" and are directly comparable; an improvement of 20% MPG means 20% more traveling for any car. In this case comparing the difference in GPM values would be misleading. (e.g. an improvement from 0.2 to 0.1 GPM gets the driver twice as far on a tank, but an improvement of 0.3 to 0.2 GPM only gets the driver 50% further.) Since many people do not know how far they will drive, but know how large their fuel tank is, the MPG value remains more useful to them.

Why fuel economy is important

The importance of fuel economy is simple - it saves you money.

A fuel efficient car makes personal sense. The less fuel you use, the more money you save. The way that you drive and maintain your car can also affect its fuel economy.

At the moment, most vehicles run on either petrol or diesel (fuel that is also known as 'fossil' fuel). There isn't an endless supply of 'fossil' fuels and this is a problem given the high energy use of the transport sector: transport makes up 44% of national energy consumption. Of this, passenger transport makes up 57%.

biofuels (alternative fuels produced from renewable resources) are becoming available at the fuel pump. (Check with the manufacturer to see whether your car is compatible.)

Materials Needed
-small bolt, about 1.5-2" long
-small nut for the bolt
-drill
-drill bit (around the same same size diameter as the bolt)
-Honda recommends the trim clip pulling tool, but you can really just pull on the door panel instead and the clips will pop out

Procedure:

1. First, you need to remove the door handle from the car. You'll need to remove the door panel to get to this. For these steps, follow these instructions:

(note that some things might not apply such as the window handle if you have power windows. del Sols will have slightly different instructions but the concept is the same and once you get inside the door panel the rest is exactly the same.)

2. Now, you will need to drill a hole through the center of the broken plastic circle on the back of the handle, and a hole through the rivet where the mechanism attaches to the plastic circle.

3. Assemble the handle spring and mechanism (look at the pictures below to see how it's assembled), and while holding it together put the bolt through the hole you drilled and the nut on the other end and tighten it (not too tight, but tight enough).

Manufacturers recalls Toyota Tacoma, Camry and Venza for electronic defects

Toyota is recalling about 500,000 Tacoma pickup trucks from model years 2005 to 2009.
News monitored reported the company saying the vehicles manufactured between September 2004 and August 2008 might have a problem with steering-wheel vibration.After a long use the vibration could affect the spiral cable assembly adversely, also known as the clockspring, which powers the driver's-side airbag module. If the cable is damaged, the airbag might be deactivated thus risking the driver's life in incidents.

At the same time, Toyota has issued a recall for about 70,000 Camry and 116,000 Venza models to replace the stop-lamp switch. The vehicles are from the 2009-11 model years.

Toyota says that during the installation of the lamps at the assembly plant, silicone grease might have reached the inside of the switch. If this occurs, warning lamps on the instrument panel could light up, the vehicle might not start or the shift lever may not move from the “park” position.

Toyota is expected to notify owners of both problems in the beginning of April. The parts will be replaced free of charge, and concerned owners can call Toyota at (800) 331-4331 or visit www.nhtsa.gov for more information.

Hydroplaning
Hydroplaning can occur when the car drives through puddles of standing water. If the water cannot squirt out from under the tire quickly enough, the tire will lift off the ground and be supported by only the water. Because the affected tire will have almost no traction, cars can easily go out of control when hydroplaning.
Some tires are designed to help reduce the possibility of hydroplaning. These tires have deep grooves running in the same direction as the tread, giving the water an extra channel to escape from under the tire.

Fill up your vehicle with a lower-octane gasoline. Buying the lowest grade or octane of gasoline that is appropriate for your car can save tons of dollars, check your car's manual if it requires premium gasoline, filling up your car with high-octane fuel is a waste of money.
