HOLIDAY DOORS 2017

noreply@blogger.com (Betty Eatman Nelson) — Tue, 26 Dec 2017 21:48:00 +0000

This time last year, we were a bit busy. After 45 years of hanging our hats in one place, we found ourselves in the midst of moving our family business from one location to another right during the Christmas Holidays. Dwelling in a 26,000 square foot facility for so many years makes for a lot of stuff. Sifting through several generations of records, samples, and merchandise, packing it, moving it, up fitting a new space - all while trying to conduct business as usual in the midst of the hustle and bustle of Christmas - was (needless to say) a unique experience.

Everyone would ask, "How is it going? I just can't imagine..." The truth is that it was like giving birth, dying, getting married, and moving all at the same time. Needless to say, I did not really savor the beauty of the holiday season.

It is now a year later. I am so grateful for the new beginning of our new location, for our faithful friends and clients, and for the joy of working among such beautiful things and people. One of my favorite Christmas traditions is taking in all the creative decorations in our city, particularly the holiday doors. And while last year forced me to take a year off, I am thrilled to return to the wonderment of the decorations of this season. With that, I offer up 2017's Holiday Doors, Is One Yours?

I just love this!

Enchanted by the curved opening, lattice door and double wreaths.

This is one of my favorites. Just simple and gorgeous.

Regal.

Fretwork. White Bow. Pretty.

Chippendale door, greenery and red bow.

Magnolia leaves and berries.

The ivy growing up the brick front, the magnolia garland and wreath. It's perfect.

I love the rich blue color of this door!

Beautiful!

Gorgeous rich silk deep apricot bows.

Merry Christmas!

The Magic of Designer/Client Partnership

noreply@blogger.com (Betty Eatman Nelson) — Thu, 11 Feb 2016 04:10:00 +0000

Ashlyn & John Whitford built their dream home a few years ago. As with any smart homeowner, she relied on interior designers to help her make her decisions throughout the building process. However, when it came to the interior of the home, one artist/designer friend seemed to really "get" her style.
As she began the process, it was clear they were a match! Both client and designer began pulling pictures from magazines, and it turned out they were dog-earing the same pages. It was clearly a match made in home design heaven, and Ashlyn hired Sloan Ward to help make her make the interior of her home exactly the way she wanted it. The pictures speak for themselves. Lovely in every sense of the word. One cannot help but be inspired. Well done, ladies!

Who wouldn't want to work in this office? I adore this light fixture which adds a bit of modern edge to the Palm Beach vibe. The cane chairs were the client's, but Sloan had them upholstered in fabric with trim.

Love the West Elm Parson's desk, the Megg Braff wall covering and the regency bookshelves.

Stark antelope rug and Palm Beach ceramic pieces are timeless.

Note the details: cording on chairs, trim on panels.

Back hall has same antelope runner by Stark.

David Hicks wallpaper with custom window treatment in half bath.

The family room off the kitchen is stunning! A great example of how you can be glamorous AND functional at the same time.

Love the triple gourd silver lamps by Julian Chichester, the regency mirror, and custom pillows on the sofa. The mirror is Celerie Kemble, and the pillows are custom Madeline Weinrib and Manuel Canovas. Parsons side tables were the clients own. The table is a vintage Mastercraft.

Custom chair in gold velvet with Brusnschwig & Fils "snow leopard" pillow.

A view from the rear.

Again, its all in the details. Sloan went through tons of purple fabrics to find the right hue. Color is crucial.
The elephant side tables were found on one of their shopping trips and add the perfect touch of Palm Beach glamour.

A Seamless & Classic Renovation

noreply@blogger.com (Betty Eatman Nelson) — Sat, 09 Jan 2016 04:14:00 +0000

A friend and her family recently moved back into their home after a long renovation. From the beginning, this two story brick colonial had great bones. However, the rooms were a bit small, and it was hard to fit extended family and friends into any space to entertain easily. In addition, this home (and its owners) were just itching for a first floor master and a larger updated kitchen.

One of the greatest challenges in renovations is how to make the new blend in with the old. The word every architect, designer and homeowner strives for is SEAMLESS. A prime example of this is when original ceiling heights are lower and the newer ones seek greater heights. In this home, the 8' original heights needed to transition to 9' new heights. With the clever collaboration between the owners and architect, a plan was hatched to widened the hallways and doorways to give the appearance of a taller ceiling height in the original spaces as they moved into the newer ones. It worked! The final result is, indeed, seamless.

Here is a peak inside this beautiful home.

The front door changed from a single to double doors. The hallways and doorways widened and created a much larger feel for a more inviting entrance.

My friend also chose custom wool ribbed runners for her foyer and three adjoining hallways furthering a seamless transition.

Expanded living room. Great for entertaining.

The use of a white, cream and natural palette gave an consistent openness to the home.

Long, wide hallways off the main foyer create a bigger more open space.

A new custom family room, kitchen and porch.

Another great space for entertaining and enjoying family.

This porch is simply wonderful in every way.

Kitchen and breakfast nook.

Clean lines in lovely kitchen. The custom hood sets the tone.

The butler's pantry sits off the kitchen where everything is easily accessed.

Love the half bath - the wallpaper, the vanity, everything!

A view from the back hallway.

I love that the owner paid attention to the details of the front door. It is a wonderful place to splurge!

2015 Holiday Doors, Is One Yours?

noreply@blogger.com (Betty Eatman Nelson) — Tue, 22 Dec 2015 19:30:00 +0000

This season's erratic weather does not make outdoor decorating easy. Rainy days can wreak havoc on silk bows, and warm temps does nothing to help our greenery. Nevertheless, Raleigh has come through with some gorgeous doors. I couldn't be prouder of my town and the fabulous design talent we have right here in our midst. Our doors are simply lovely.
And so, without further delay, I present this year's Holiday Doors. Is one yours?

Sophisticated gray and gold.

Nothing like double pink loopy bows for southern Christmas charm.

Handsome design here with square wreaths and natural tones.

A welcoming entrance.

Another double wreath combo and this time with classic red.

Simply elegant.

I wish my lighting was better here. The off center tartan bows are so charming!

A great example of what great lighting does for a door.

Fabulous combo of greenery. Adore the magnolia up top.

This has a easy elegance to it that makes me want to pop in for a visit.

Merry Merry!

I could go on and on... the woven ribbon, the cross, the woodwork...

Big bow!

The perfection of these clean lines is dreamy.

The Nutcracker soldiers are a fun touch.

Putting a wreath in an unexpected place is always clever.

Lots of depth and sophistication in this design.

The owners recently moved into this home, and I love that they wasted no time getting their holiday decor in full swing.

A classic door.

A sweet cross.

A Vision Fulfilled

noreply@blogger.com (Betty Eatman Nelson) — Wed, 21 Jan 2015 18:38:00 +0000

Josie & Will Tattersall scoured Raleigh Neighborhoods for just the right home for their family of five. "We really wanted to be nestled back in a private neighborhood where our kids could ride bikes and play with neighbors in the streets," Josie said. They found that perfect neighborhood, but the dream house was not within sight. Their desire for open space, a large, life-friendly kitchen, and more bedrooms could not be met in the homes they saw. So, they decided to build. A dream home for their family to create memories for a lifetime.

To decorate the space and make the new structure the home of their dreams, they enlisted designer, Mary Beth Paulson with Landor Interior Design.

Here are the lovely results...

Family Room with Arteriors Sputnik chandelier in gold.

The ottoman's are covered in a geometric fabric by Kravet.

The black coffee table found in our showroom was a perfect fit for this large space.

Velvet quilted fabric by Thibaut.

Mary Beth & Josie decided on this Stanton wool sisal due to its softness and ability to clean.

The three pendants are from Hudson Valley.

When asked which room is her favorite, Josie immediately replied, "The kitchen is a perfect place for family to gather and such a peaceful, beautiful room." I couldn't agree more. The stark white decor against the dark floors is always a beautiful statement.

Pillows are custom, and the fabric is by Scalamandre (Bamboo Grove).

I adore this Cole & Son paper in the half bath above & below. The chandelier is by Currey & Co.

Master Closet (above & below) has a vanity with lambskin stool.

There are several things I love about the study. The color, for one. The walls are painted a rich gray by Benjamin Moore (Kendall Charcoal). Second, the unique torches on either side of the sofa. Third, the blend of traditional and contemporary touches. I love family portraits. The one above the sofa is of Will's great grandfather, from England.

A red Currey & Co. lantern hangs in the center of the room and adds color	.

Visual Comfort library lamps are placed over the bookcases, adding character and light.

Geometric stair runner by Stanton.

Above and below is the kids playroom with a fun, patterned carpet by Milliken.

The Map Fixtures were a great find from Form & Function.

I love these adorable bunk beds off the playroom. What a fun place for a sleepover.

I am a huge believer that good art work can make a room. This makes my point.

Holiday Doors - 2015

noreply@blogger.com (Betty Eatman Nelson) — Sun, 21 Dec 2014 16:22:00 +0000

December days are special in so many ways. There is an excitement in the air that is almost tangible. Granted, as mothers, the excitement can swing slightly toward manic anxiety; but even with the mile-long list, there remains a joy to the busy-ness that is special to these December days. An air of celebration seems to override the stress of the to-do's, and life itself sings a joyous song.

As a member of the design world, I have a special adoration for these December days. Every home shines a bit brighter, every table is set a bit grander, and, indeed, every door dons a splendor of its own. Whether fancy enough for a palace or the simplest evergreen, holiday doors are amongst my very favorite things. Each and every one touches my heart, as I see the inner designer of every homeowner decking her door. It is as if everyone is celebrating the joy of design and decor, if only for a month. But oh, what a sight!

And so, without further delay, I offer you these Holiday Doors. Could one be yours?

Decor in double. Simple green on evergreen. Elegant.

This bow! Even with the poor lighting in my photography, this bow is fabulous.

Handsome coordinating garland and wreath.

The placement of this bow is dynamite.

Another double. The gold bows are perfection.

Oh joy! The bows, the three elements, the symmetry. Delicious design.

The original use of garland makes such a clever presentation here.

A whimsical use of color that is so inviting.

A classic. Evergreen and red bow.

Wreaths on lanterns are simply wonderful.

I applaud the way the wreaths are hung with the double bands on top which makes the colors pop.

Another double wreath beauty.

Simply lovely.

Another classic.

Darling.

The way this pops against the white door - I could not love anything more.

An inviting entrance.

Pretty in pink.

Magnolia speaks for itself.

Green on green. The imperfection of the boxwood makes this so alluring.

High Point Highlights

noreply@blogger.com (Betty Eatman Nelson) — Mon, 03 Nov 2014 14:32:00 +0000

Twice a year we attend High Point Market to view all that is new in the design and home industry. People always ask me what was 'the big thing' or what was 'HOT' this year? This year, there were definite answers to these questions.

For starters, NAVY & GRAY were strong colors for fabrics, rugs and paintings. GOLD is still a hot metal, but SILVER is making its way to the top. I saw lovely and dramatic uses of shiny silver. Geometrics and modern designs are still on trend, and I am seeing a rise of YELLOW in fabrics and rugs.

A pictures is worth a thousand words. So, here is a run down of what we saw over a four day period and some of my personal High Lights from High Point.

Kelly Wearstler, the well known designer with an edge is now designing fixtures for Visual Comfort. It did not disappoint. Drama!

Although several other manufacturer's carry a sputnik version, Kelly's design is a true replica of the original and the finishes are spot on. She also designed a flush mount and pendant version.

A funky and simple Wearstler pendant. Perfect for over a long kitchen island or in a stairwell.

Black and white marble cylinder lamp.

There she is - in the flesh. A delight even after greeting hundreds of fans.

Geometric chandelier, available in several finishes and size. Fabulous.

Niermann Weeks also joined the VC team. Here is one of his creations below:

A Palm Beach inspired fixture. Sure to be a hit. Available in several sizes.

Visual Comfort lamps. Note silver.

Good News! Wallpaper is here to stay. Let's all rejoice. Phillip Jeffries has always been my personal favorite, especially with regard to grasscloths and textures. Below is one of his superior offerings:

The Tempaper brand of designer temporary wallpaper has been out for a few years.

The patterns have gotten better and edgier. These are great as you can apply them on your own and change them out when you tire of the design or are ready for a change. A great way to add a strong punch in bathrooms, on ceilings or on an accent wall.

I love RUGS! I love the textures, patterns, designs, colors and feel. Here are some of the new ones and my favorite finds. Sari Silk Rugs are still IN! Love the turquoise and purples in this one below:

Oriental hand-knotted in rich charcoal, navy and light gray accents. The detail is exquisite.

Tibetan rug in gray, blue and yellowish gold. A bold statement.

Moroccan-like designs shown in flat weaves in softer colors. Coming to the showroom soon!

Note the color. The original designs were in cream backgrounds, now available in gray ground.

Of course Van Collier is always on my list, and each year Beth & Chris deliver with perfection.

vanCollier ginkgo 3 leaf table.

Etagere with Greek key design. I want this in silver.

A FEW MORE LIGHTS....

These Italian Glass lamps make my mouth water! They are coming soon to our store.

Italian glass cylinder lamp with speckled gray/gold. Gorgeous!

This painting says it all: blue and modern. That is a trend that seems destined to stay for a while.

Post-It Note Art.

Silver and lucite coffee table. Also available in gold. On the way to the store. I adore!

Some fabric swatches from Cotton and Quill. Coming to our store soon.

House of Landor

noreply@blogger.com (Betty Eatman Nelson) — Tue, 29 Apr 2014 23:10:00 +0000

Mary Beth Paulson is busy these days. Launching her vintage clothing business called House of Landor only 8 months ago, she can hardly believe how quickly it has taken off - and soared. (Trina Turk just called her to purchase a piece, for goodness sake.)

A local interior decorator, Paulson has been styling homes in the Raleigh area for the past few years. Her look, like her House of Landor logo, is vintage with a twist of contemporary. Last year she decided to combine her passion for clothing with her love of design to launch this new venture. She hand picks vintage clothing that ranges from a 1960's ball gown to a 1970's Chanel pantsuit. All items are sold for reasonable prices. And the icing on the cake is she will completely style you for the evening (earrings, shoes, hand bag - the works!)

Mary Beth opened up her home to show us her style in interiors and in fashion. It was surely an inspiration to me. Enjoy.

Standing her in closet, Mary Beth models a 1960's unlabeled silk dress, BCBG sweater and a one of a kind necklace. (All from House of Landor) .

If anyone needs a big closet, its a vintage clothing designer. Who can argue with that?

Her living room is simple with a classic herringbone sisal, a tufted white couch and a touch of modern with the glass coffee table.

I love the vintage horn lamps and bright colored oil painting. Very fresh.

Little vintage silver boxes lying on side table.

The dining room has pale grey walls with one wall papered in a Cole & Son's textile. Touches of vintage are displayed in the lighting and sideboard.

I love the artwork in Mary Beth's home. Each one has a story to tell. This framed piece to the left is actually a cloth garment by Joseph Nechvatal. Mary Beth's late sister, an avid dancer, wore it during a performance. Mary Beth had it framed and it now hangs in the dining room as a remembrance of her life (below).

The large sun room which leads to the patio is a great place to entertain with several seating areas. The "rattan nest" chandelier by Clayton Oxford hangs to the left.

The bar area, wallpapered in tree trunks, also has a bit of glam with the vintage knobs and glasses.

Mary Beth, in St. John belt and Ungaro top, stands in front of a cobalt blue velvet sofa. The framed print on the back wall looks like a contemporary painting.

Up close, it is actually random ink letters and numbers on a plain piece of paper. She found it at a flea market for a steal!

I love her kitchen. It is very vintage modern with the hanging lucite chandelier and the punch of color in the painting by Kyle Highsmith. The Paulson's loved the rich colors and the fact it looks so different from Kyle's normal work.

One constant throughout the home is the sisal and natural fiber rugs. A great example of how you can use these natural fibers anywhere and in any size. Above and below.

These choices allow for a clean slate in any room. In design, you can dress up or dress down a natural fiber. It just works with everything.

The den also has a really interesting painting over the fireplace. Contemporary flash among the antiques and French feel.

Another mix of vintage (the lamp) and modern (coffee table).

The framed art above the sofa is another unique piece. Up close, it is actually a used calendar with post it notes. From afar, it is a funky picture. Love the creativity here.

The newest House of Landor Employee.

Thanks Mary Beth for allowing us to tour your home. If you want to catch up with her (and her clothes) you can contact her at MBPaulson1@gmail.com. She also has many items hanging in Evie Dixon's store, The Finds.

HOLIDAY DOORS 2013

noreply@blogger.com (Betty Eatman Nelson) — Tue, 24 Dec 2013 14:38:00 +0000

It is that magical, wonderful time of year. Spirits are bright, hearts are merry and love is all around. I am in awe of the beauty of the season. As part of my family tradition, we always take time out to drive around and take in the splendor of the season -- the lights, the greenery, and yes, the Holiday Doors. It is my favorite time of the year.

Enjoy my new found favorites of 2013.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all.

Adore the over sized wreath, the twin trees, the whole bit.

Gold wreaths against orange double doors.

This historic home with its long doors and beautiful triple wreaths caught my eye.

Gorgeous gray bow.

Fretwork door and pretty pink bow and wreath. Great combo.

These angel's moved to a new home with a new door. Still love them.

Ice Skates and snowflakes.

The setting of this door reminds me of a New England home. Love it.

Magnolia leaves, natural vine, and simple green and red wreath. Love the small simple berry wreath.

Worthy again.

High Point Market Highlights

noreply@blogger.com (Betty Eatman Nelson) — Mon, 11 Nov 2013 13:56:00 +0000

My High Point Highlights are finally revealed. Every one keeps asking what was new, what was the 'it' thing, the 'must have'... As always, there is so much to see, so much to take in, and so much by which I am inspired. It is one of the great gifts of my job - that I get to see art and design in the making. This year, High Point did not disappoint. Beauty abounded, and I was, indeed, INSPIRED. I hope you will be as well.

The "Must Have": Anything from Tommy Mitchell

My big treat this year was meeting local artist and furniture designer, Tommy Mitchell. His pieces have been in Bergdorf's and have been placed in various designers' homes. Each piece is hand painted and unique. Art at its most inspiring.

Above and below: Tommy's martini tables, which are works of art. Consider them a bit of jewelry for your home.

A sampling of wall hangings.

Color Trend: PINK

There was a lot of PINK in rugs. Hand knotted, flat weave, over-dyed. You name it - it is available in PINK.

A Designer's Own - When Beauty Finds a Home

noreply@blogger.com (Betty Eatman Nelson) — Sat, 19 Oct 2013 21:10:00 +0000

There are beautiful homes everywhere. Blogs, magazines and coffee table books can entice us with the unique allure of a well-decorated home. All the pictures in the magazines and all the books cannot conjure JOY or a life happily lived within the walls. Such is the case with this designer's home in Raleigh's Hayes Barton neighborhood.

Designer Molly Painter has taken the last 18-months away from her design business to focus on her family and oversee this project. With a heart determined to merge beauty and design with the bustling lifestyle of a vibrant family of five, Molly's most cherished project to date is an inspiration to us all. Thanks to architect Richard Hall and Joel Williams of Williams Realty & Building Company who did much to make this dream a reality.

Molly graciously agreed to answer some questions about this project.

What was your main reason(s) for renovating? We wanted a downstairs master bedroom and bath. (And we didn't want to share the Jack and Jill bath with our youngest child as she got older!) We also wanted/needed more closet space. But the real thing that got us started was when the plaster ceiling in the living room collapsed. This forced us to replace all plaster ceilings downstairs with sheet rock, and in doing so we were able to replace wiring, plumbing and HVAC in the old part of the house while the ceiling was open.

What is your favorite room now? The kitchen and patio.

What has been best part of renovation? Working will Joel Williams (builder) and Larry Irwin (superintendent).

Where do you spend most of your time? Kitchen/den as a family and master bathroom/bedroom for my sanity.

Is there anything you would have done differently? And/or what advice would you give someone starting the process? We were fortunate that we could live in the house for 5 years prior to the project and see how we wanted to improve it based on how we used the space. At the end of the day, it is about living well within the space. The decoration and design must all work toward that end. So, my advice would be to design the space around how you're going to live in it.

What was the inspiration for your cobalt blue lacquered family room? My inspiration for the blue lacquered den which also flowed into the entire house was the Tory Burch Store in NYC. I love how she used bright color in a very traditional space with lots of textures on the wall and ceiling. I wanted to preserve the Georgian style house while hoping the interiors would reflect a fun spirit. I do have 3 young daughters and a puppy to consider!

When designing a room, what do you start with first? A fabric, paint color, rug?
I start with one main fabric (usually a print or geometric), then I choose a rug, paint and, last, coordinating fabrics and trim. However, when I start from scratch, I usually have the whole idea in my mind.

Do you find it more challenging to design your own home vs. that of your clients? On the one hard, it was very hard to design my own house, because I see so many choices daily. It is hard to make finite decisions for myself, as I am constantly aware of 'something else' that could work and look great. It helped to get lots of opinions from my designer friends along the way. On the other hand, it is easier because I could try metallic paint, lacquer and other non-traditional elements without having to convince the client they would work. Luckily, my husband, Michael, was supportive of my vision [almost] every step of the away.

Breakfast nook with Arteriors Sputnik lighting.

Fabulous kitchen gathering place with lucite stools.

Fun and spirited lacquered blue den.

Several conversation areas in the living room is much needed for a family of 5 with lots of guests.

I am a huge fan of white walls, particularly lacquered or high gloss. It creates a rich sophisticated
back drop for beautiful art work and accessories.

The walls of the front foyer are covered in an Osborne&Little paper, and the stair runner is a simple yet elegant wool/sisal flat weave.

One of Celerie Kemble's wallpapers for Schumacher covers the walls of the back foyer.

The mud room has plenty of storage and a chalk board for Mom to write love notes to the kids.
This geometric wallpaper by Romo adds a touch of color to the mudroom.

Organized cubbies for each child occupy one wall.

Jonathan Adler's Meurice Chandelier hangs over the bed and a
double gourd lamp rests on the bedside table. A picture perfect teenage room.

The fabric for the headboard and pillow is by Designer's Guild.

The Heritage Floral fabric by Lilly Pulitzer was used to make the custom bed skirt and Roman shades in one daughter's bedroom. The painted chest is by Painted House Studio.

The half bath off the kitchen is truly a gem! The wallpaper alone with its raised texture gives the everyday a bit of glamour. The hanging glass fixture hanging above makes life simply divine.

Soft leather and lucite chairs from Eatman's were placed at the end of the bed. Custom faux leather headboard by Melanie St. John. The fixture over the bed is by Oly, the fabric for the bed skirt and panels is by Cowtan &Tout and the wool and viscose rug is by Antrim.

The Master bath in shades of gray.

And finally, the veranda! An outdoor custom-sized rug by Stanton was made for the covered porch area.

What a treasure. A stunning house and a warm and vibrant home. And good news for you, I hear Molly is coming out of her work hiatus. Her keen eye and gracious heart will be collaborating again, and in our midst! An inspiration, indeed.

The Last Hurrah (In Isle of Palms)

noreply@blogger.com (Betty Eatman Nelson) — Fri, 06 Sep 2013 21:56:00 +0000

For our last hurrah of summer, my husband and I traveled to Isle of Palms with some wonderful friends. It has become an annual tradition, and one for which I am so thankful.

The home in which we stay is the gathering spot for their extended family and is rich with inspiration. I have always adored this house. It reflects the home owners' personality and sense of style.
My friend, who has a degree in interior design, has similar taste to her mother; and, together, they have fun updating the family retreat when the whim or need arises.

This ocean front home is uniquely beautiful inside and out. Part Charleston, part Palm Beach, part elegant cabin, it is both casual and sophisticated - striking that magical balance that makes nights spent within its walls both indulgent and restorative. It's warmth and aesthetic are a perfect match for the temperament of this busy and loving family.

Here is a peek for you to enjoy...

Shell stepping stones greet guest as they walk up to the back door.

The back of the home is just as beautiful as the front.

Driving up, we are instantly relaxed as we see the Palm trees and luscious green ground cover. The homeowner painted the house this fresh, peachy pink shade a few years ago. It just oozes happiness.

Inside the home, the family room is located in the middle of the house between the kitchen and the porch. The light paneling and stone brick fire place gives the feel of a mountain cabin. Meanwhile, the double story room with its long windows, ocean views and Charleston-style furnishings, keep us from forgetting where we are at all times.

My friend and her mother just recovered two barrel back chairs in a bright green and blue fabric (pictured below), and purchased new sofas in a pale blue linen The room is accented with sea green accessories reminiscent of the exterior surroundings.

The walls that are not paneled are painted bright lime green.

The loft area upstairs doubles as a sitting area and a kids play area.

A nook beneath the steps show remnants of a busy day at the beach.

I love the open railing going up the stairs. At the top landing is a stain glass window.

A hidden bar for thirsty adults.

Several places to dine. Indoor (above) or out (below).

The screened in porch facing the ocean is the gathering spot for the entire household.

The View.

The Front.

Farewell Isle of Palms and thank you, dear friends, for your gracious hospitality!

Elegant Outdoor Spaces

noreply@blogger.com (Betty Eatman Nelson) — Thu, 11 Jul 2013 15:09:00 +0000

Outdoor spaces are no longer for just basic backyard barbecues. They are now beautiful extensions of the home and a place to get away from the world around you - even if it is just a few steps behind you.

Take a look at some of my outdoor inspirations. I can dream that my patio will look like one of these one day. I am not even going to add comments. The beauty speaks volumes on its own.

Stairway to Heaven

noreply@blogger.com (Betty Eatman Nelson) — Fri, 28 Jun 2013 01:14:00 +0000

I tend to get my inspiration from projects on which I am currently working or from things about which I am daydreaming for my own home. As we have just had our stairs installed (they are still fresh wood with no paint or stain), it is time to focus on what I want to do for my runner. Here are a few inspirations I have in my (bulging) daydream folder, as well as from some recent client installations. Be inspired, and enjoy!

As seen in Kelly Wearslter's book HUE

Although my stair case is not as grand as this one at the Hillcrest Estate, I love the look of the custom black and white runner. Kelly custom designed this through Patterson, Flynn & Martin.

Still love the black floors and the zebra printed hide.

One of my favorite geometric carpets by Rosecore. The Cite Square Pattern is unique with its high/low texture. It mimics sisal while offering the allure of wool. I have used it for area rugs and runners for several clients.

Love this simple horizontal elegant stripe as seen in Elle Decor. The silk-like texture, which is normally wool and viscose, is a huge hit this year. Just have to make my clients aware that just like silk, it will lay down. To me, this makes it look like a luxurious antique runner.

From Jonathan Adler's book ON HAPPY CHIC COLORS

This original design by David Hicks is one of my all time favorites. There are now several manufacturers that carry similar less expensive versions, but I adore the wilton by Stark and Prestige. My staircase looks similar to this one with a foil-like paper. I might try this in black and white.

Speaking of Happy Chic...look at this colorful staircase that we just installed a few months ago. The homeowner (who should be a designer in her next life) wanted something fun and bright on her steps leading to her basement. We discussed stripes but with the many turns on her steps, we settled on a fun, less expensive version that looks amazing!

The owner contemplated which color she wanted on each step to give the most pleasing look. I think she succeeded!

As seen in Glamorous Rooms

Another geometric runner makes a statement when you walk in the front door.

I still think sisal looks great as a runner. This herringbone design was used throughout

a Raleigh home with multiple sets of stair cases.

As seen in New Classic Interiors
Striped runners can be traditional and classic like the one above.

As seen in Defining Luxury

This pinched leopard product - similar to a Langhorne we have on the showroom floor - is gorgeous. Timeless and beautiful, it goes with all types of decor.

More animal prints. Beautiful zebra runner as seen in House Beautiful.

High Point Market Finds -- April 2013

noreply@blogger.com (Betty Eatman Nelson) — Wed, 08 May 2013 01:58:00 +0000

High Point Spring Market always seems to give me a jolt of excitement. There is nothing like seeing all the new designs, colors, and styles unveiled for the first time. Although this market trip was quick and condensed into only a few days, we did find fabulous things. All such delightful treats are on order and will shortly be on their way to the showroom. I look forward to sharing them with you. In the meantime, I am offering you a little eye candy. Enjoy.

One of my favorite things was Aerin Lauder's new line of lighting through Visual Comfort. Beautiful and timeless, like the designer, the line is flawless. I have included my top picks below.

Aerin's gold table lamp with white shade. Simple, yet sophisticated.

Very Palm Beach, this chandelier is available in gold or white.

A sconce version of the above chandelier.

This floor lamp with impeccably clean lines.

This ottoman is from a brand new company. Note the straight brass legs and sleek design. I have ordered one for the floor in rich, hot pink velvet. It is available in silver and any fabric or hide. What a great way to add a touch of modern sophistication to a room.

A very exciting find. Wonderfully priced, contemporary fixtures from a collection you will love.
Perfect over a dining room table or in a large foyer.

Indoor/outdoor chevron collection from Dash&Albert. Several sizes available. All on order.
The 2x3 is only $44.

More indoor/outdoor rope-like rugs with fabulous texture.

Finally, a reasonably priced patchwork hide! Chevron ivory patchwork hide. 5x8 $980. On its way to the showroom floor.

Below is an over-dyed Moroccan style rug we hand-picked from Market Specials and brought back with us. We can re-order in several sizes and 3 colors. The price point is amazing. Three possible colors: purple, ivory (below) and green.

Over Dyed Moroccan style 8x10, $1100

Another market special that ended in my trunk. This wool and silk flatweave rug in 6x9 for only $599.

We had to have this! So, we bought it. It's coming soon.

Reasonably priced silver arc floor lamp is also coming soon. $650 retail.

The "Delilah" lamp from Robert Abbey. Available in emerald green, cobalt and white. Only $299 retail.

Although the pouf is a bit overdone, I liked this one in polished silver metal. Great for a stool, side table or even two put together as a coffee table.

Taylor Burke is another new line that got us excited. Adore these chairs.

The Kings Grant chair is available in ANY pantone color.

Of course, my High Point Market trip would not be complete without mentioning the new introductions from vanCollier. Their Etta Headboard hit off 2013 with a splash after being featured in Gun & Garden. This year, they got "Style Spotted" by the market press for three items, all of which I love.

The Silver Ginkgo makes its debut and earns a "Style Spot"!

This fun side table is available in any color.

Very chic outdoor chair - comfortable and cool. Note the Greek Key arms. It also earned a "Style Spot" this year.

Are you excited yet? Feel free to email me if you have any questions about the new items en route to Eatman's. Additionally, you can follow our Facebook page for all new arrivals.

VANCOLLIER HOT IN 2013

noreply@blogger.com (Betty Eatman Nelson) — Sat, 19 Jan 2013 19:29:00 +0000

It was quite some time ago that we first introduced vanCollier on this blog. From that time, the husband/wife design duo have made great strides toward international success. While maintaining their interior design business, the two launched their own furniture line featuring unique pieces that beautifully walk the line between classic form and current vision. Drawing from North Carolina's natural and cultural history, we find everything from tobacco drying sticks to ginkgo leaves as inspiration for their forward-thinking pieces.

While I have always been a fan of their work (and the designers themselves), it gives me a warm feeling all over to think that the world is taking notice too. See below praise for their designs in both Garden&Gun and British Home and Garden.

Please come to the showroom to view these gems in person. Eatman's is the only vanCollier retailer in the state. Lucky me!

The Brown House

noreply@blogger.com (Betty Eatman Nelson) — Sat, 29 Dec 2012 19:39:00 +0000

Katie and Robert Brown have finished their 4th renovation, and just in time for the holidays. Their first two were on their previous home, and the last two have been on their current home. This last renovation was especially poignant as it bridged history -- taking the home of Katie's great grandfather and architecturally bridging the past to the present, where she lives now with her husband and three children. The house was built by Katie's maternal great grandfather, Hill Carter Linthicum, in the mid 1940's. Linthicum was a prominent architect who, along with his father, was instrumental in founding the AIA of NC. This is the house in which her grandmother lived, her father grew up and the house she knew she would one day call home.

The original layout of the 1940s home included a kitchen, a den and bedrooms. The dining room, piano room and upstairs area were added in the 1950s. Then, Katie and Robert purchased the home in 2006 and began another addition out the back encompassing a large custom kitchen, family room, and master suite. They originally moved into the home to take care of Katie's grandmother, Diana Skipwith Linthicum Coley, who still lived in the original layout. When she passed away a few years ago, Katie knew she needed to rework the entire space to compliment her growing family. And 14 months later, it is finally complete.

She was generous enough to let me work my way through the lovely home and to share the photos with you. I know you will enjoy... and be inspired.

The Great Room, that lives up to its name.

The great room (above and below) is a large room with 3 seating areas. Inspired by the Pavilion at the Angus Barn, the cathedral ceilings and dark floors give the feel of a resort lodge. Originally, this one room was Katie's grandmother's den, bedroom and kitchen. It is now one large area perfect for entertaining.

Katie, who earned her design degree at Meredith, used three large Visual Comfort chandeliers in the great room. She prepared three seating areas using tufted leather sofas, orientals and shag rugs.

On one end of the great room, a paneled study waits for a guest.

On the other end, a mirrored hall leads to the great room.

The right side of the hall is a panel of custom mirrored doors that open to a small bar.

The Piano Room

The piano room was added in the 1950's and was originally Katie's grandmother's dining room. Mrs. Coley had exquisite taste and carefully chose quality textiles that would stand the test of time. The fabric used in the panels and in the back of the book case was hand-printed in Greece.

Foyer portrait of Katie's paternal great grandfather, Silas Bodie Coley, Sr.

Mr. Coley (above portrait) was Katie's paternal great grandfather, a farmer but also a business man. He was an insurance salesman and later established Durham Life Insurance Company. The farm land property he owned stretched from Vick, Glen Eden, Lake Boone and Ridge Roads. This land was then developed into what we now call Coley Forest.

The hallway that leads to the foyer has brown and white tile.

The Foyer holds a large Christmas tree reaching to the second floor.

Brown and white marble tile greet guests as they enter the home through the foyer. Standing in the foyer, you see the separate entrances to the piano room, a hallway, the study and the dining room. Looking above, the grande curved staircase melts into the room.

A view from above.

The bottom of the stair case yields into the foyer. To the right is the dining room (below) which was originally Katie's grandmothers living room.

The new dining room has two french doors that open out to the front patio. The panels were Mrs. Coley's living room draperies. Katie modified them to make them longer and more current.

The dining room walls are covered in a rich chocolate suede to create texture and warmth.

The dining table is uniquely perfect in several ways. It seats 14-16 (depending on the chairs) for dinner parties and holidays with extended family. It, along with the kitchen island (below) and 3/4 of the paneling in the oak room were all quarter sawn white oak that was milled from 8 trees on their property.

The extra large custom refrigerator (left) looks like a piece of furniture. The sculley (below), a room in itself, holds all the serving trays, plates, buffets that any large entertaining family might need.

One of the powder rooms (below) is awaiting a fabric installation. However, it is a tradition to sign the walls before the textile is installed. At a recent gathering, a few friends placed their John Hancock on the wall.

I love the sink purchased at Ferguson's. It reminds me of a collection plate. I am sure the Browns would not mind if guest left a few coins behind.

Twin girls share a suite which was part of this last renovation. A small hallway leads to the girls' double room. To the left is a mirrored bathroom with a pair of sinks.

Mirrored walls make it easy for girls to see their pearly whites and, in later years, apply make-up to their pretty faces.

Entering into the suite are two separate doorways into identical rooms on either side. In the middle is a huge pocket door that can be closed when they want some space from each other.

I love the double closet doors in the corners of the room. A great way to utilize space. Katie hired family friend and architect, BA Farrell. "We worked closely together in all the interior planning/design phases. It was a wonderful partnership. I can't give him enough credit!" Katie says of her long time family friend.

Pink Cheetah Carpet.

The pink cheetah carpet in the girls room adds a playful touch and can grow with their changing taste. The nylon printed pattern also has an appealing price point.

The right side of the suite is a carbon copy of the left side, with the exception of added details on the closet doors and a few stuffed animals.

The Brown's mind the details in the exterior too. The tall columns supporting the covered patio were milled from cypress trees. The patio leads to a pool where the family relaxes regularly.

The covered porch which sits to the left of the patio was part of the first renovation. I love the moss growing on the brick, which gives it an aged appearance.

Thank you Katie and Robert, for allowing us to tour your home and for sharing your unique family history.

HOLIDAY DOORS 2012

noreply@blogger.com (Betty Eatman Nelson) — Wed, 26 Dec 2012 02:38:00 +0000

It has become a tradition to photograph local Holiday Doors that Inspire me all around town. As usual, this year they did not disappoint. We also traveled to Charleston, South Carolina for Christmas and I couldn't help but add a few of their holiday doors. I hope you enjoy this years version of Holiday Doors, Is one yours?

Merry Christmas!

The entrance. The greenery. The ribbon. Complete perfection.

This home was recently renovated and I always looked forward to the single door that was there before. However, I love the elegant double doors and the homeowner's choice of gold ribbon.

Another one of my favorites doors. I love the Christmas colors against the blue green door.

Boxwood garland and wreath mixed with magnolia leaves stands out on this canary door.

Double red berry wreaths is all this front entrance needs.

A simple white wreath and a purple door.

This gold painted magnolia wreath with turquoise bow is one of my favorites.

Another gold painted magnolia leaf against a peach door.

You can't go wrong with the star of Bethlehem and a navy lacquer door.

A hand woven basket with ribbon and greenery is just what this southern home needs.

Red, white, and blue. A patriotic Christmas.

Red ribbon and greenery are well suited for this black door.

Beautiful and elegant natural wreath.

English Country. Pretty.

Cream Brick. Simple Green's. Blue Gray bow. Love it all.

Table Talk

noreply@blogger.com (Betty Eatman Nelson) — Tue, 20 Nov 2012 22:05:00 +0000

I adore Thanksgiving! It is a time for friends and family to gather around the table and thank God for our many blessings. Many a memory is made around the dining room table in celebration of this annual meal - and though the decor of these rooms may change over time, the memories are set in stone.

As I wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving, I thought I'd share a few of my favorite dining rooms.

The above restaurant dining room was designed by Kelly Wearstler. The photograph is my favorite photo from her book, Hue.

A West Palm Beach dining room, designed by Meg Braff. Photo courtesy Meg Braff's website.

A Steven Gambrel designed dining room I came across on Mrs. Blanding's blog.

I like everything about this dining room. The chairs, the rug, the fixture, the combination

of traditional and contemporary design -- it's all fabulous.

A New Orleans couple show their home in the September 2012 issue of AD.
I love the soft wool silk rug. Very sleek and elegant.

Black and white dining room by Allan Reyes. Love the dramatic rug and walls.

Love the framed art on the white all, the floor lamp, the sputnik and the Dash & Albert Rug. Mostly, I love the fact that it looks like the room was decorated over time.

Dining room seen in Lonny Magazine. The designer painted white paint on the floor to give the room an edge. Love the eclectic mix, the dark floors the chandelier, and library lights.

Dining/Library Combo as seen in Lonny.

Again Lonny comes through with an amazingly unique dining room. The chairs are upholstered in vinyl snakeskin and the ceiling is draped in a tapestry. The rug is a wool velvet.

The most beautiful tables are not those filled with things, but those that are surrounded by laughter and joy from those you love. May your Thanksgiving be a blessed and happy one this year!

White Wonderland

noreply@blogger.com (Betty Eatman Nelson) — Fri, 12 Oct 2012 21:35:00 +0000

It can be argued that white is not a color; but, in fact, the absence of any color at all. Though this may be true in the most basic way, to the eyes of many designers - and to me especially - white is simply a wonderland. When I think of white, I think "clean" and "pure. And with each passing year, I seem to be drawn to this sensibility and aesthetic more and more. No longer tagged with labels like "sterile" and "cold", white, in its simplicity, has become the ideal and most welcoming canvas for art work, sophisticated design, and, indeed, inspiration.

Enjoy!

Summer in Aspen

noreply@blogger.com (Betty Eatman Nelson) — Tue, 14 Aug 2012 03:12:00 +0000

An invite from some dear friends, a much needed family vacation, and a free place to stay landed us in Aspen, Colorado over the week of July 4th. And what a gift it was! I had no idea what to expect as I could only envision Aspen in the winter -- snow covered mountains, ski resorts, elaborate homes, and fine dining with celebrity sightings. So, what does Aspen look like when it is not all decorated in white?

In a word - SPLENDOR. In another word - BEAUTY. Aspen in the summer is a magical place. There are still luxurious homes and celebrity sightings, but what I could never have imagined was the glory of the colors of nature's beauty painted on the summer landscape. It is simply exquisite. The rich blue sky seemed to be changing in the depths of its rich hue all the time. In magnificent juxtaposition, creamy white clouds sat like poufs in the brilliant sky. Green leaves of thriving trees reaching for the sky. The rich salt and peppered colors of the Aspen tree's bark. Vivid flowers everywhere. And those mountains! Glorious. For all of us design junkies, it is a humbling and inspiring thing - to take a step outside and see what nature does all on its own.

In addition to the majestic scenery, Aspen was filled with art galleries, unique shops, restaurants, hotels and, of course, an old fashioned 4th of July Parade. Here are some photo's of our trip. Now, I can't imagine not going in the summer.

Enjoy.

Ahhh, to wake up to this every morning. What a dream.

One thing I adored about Aspen is the liberally planted flowers everywhere.
In front of almost every home in town, homeowners planted flowers (outside their gates) next to the sidewalks for all to enjoy. The flowers were all colors and kinds and were intentionally planted to look like wildflowers.

At times I felt like I was in Switzerland.

The trees lining the brick walkways provided beauty and shade.

This stream running through the town kept our kids entertained for hours. Yellow ducks, hair bows, and shoes all dropped in to see how far and fast they would go.

Getting ready for the 4th of July Parade.

Old timey car to go with Old Fashioned Parade!

Kids & parents alike took to decorating bikes for the parade. The best bike wins!

All aboard the parade. By bike, by foot, or by kayak!

I love the red mullion's on this cabin-like home. I wonder if they paint them green on St Patty's Day.

One of the town parks. Perfect and pet friendly.

During our trip, I wandered away to scout out the decor of some of the hotels & restaurants. The Little Nell is a boutique hotel that has that cozy feel with all the needed luxuries. The Sky Hotel is supposedly the Hot Spot to see and be seen. The decor is very hip and modern.

Foyer of the Little Nell Hotel. Love the single piece wood console.

Artwork inside siting area of Little Nell.

I loved this piece. The artist used several different hides for texture. Perfect for an elegant mountain villa.

The foyer of the Sky Hotel.

Love this custom runner in the lobby of the Sky Hotel.

After a day of hiking and site seeing, we had to take a rest and rehydrate at the Sky Hotel Bar. Of course, I loved the sputnik chandeliers. The Ajax Restaurant was one of our favorite spots. Located in the middle of Aspen and at the base of the mountain, it is a great spot to people watch.

The last day our host took us to the Pine Creek Cookhouse for lunch. Located in the Ashcroft Valley in the White River National Forest, the views were breathtaking.

Although I recommend outdoor dining for the views, the inside was very Aspen!

Gallerie Maximillian, one of the many art galleries in town.

I had to stop in at Daniels Antiques. Unique antiques from all over the world.

McHugh Gallery was my favorite design spot in Aspen. Filled to the brim with unique accessories, paintings, and furniture. Loved his style. Want the coffee table below.

After I make my millions, this will be one of my vacation homes. This lovely estate over looks downtown Aspen with clear views of the surrounding mountains.

Complete with pond, a guest house, and stables.

But, the spectacular view was priceless.

Dear Friends, thank you for the gracious hospitality and fond memories. We are forever grateful!

Farewell Aspen!

Jonathan Adler Fabrics

noreply@blogger.com (Betty Eatman Nelson) — Tue, 31 Jul 2012 13:58:00 +0000

Today I met with one of my textile reps who showed me the new Jonathan Adler fabric line. After one look, it was clear - I had to have them all. I ordered every single sample for our showroom. The designs and colors are classic Adler - bold chevrons, modern flame stitch, funky patterns and bright colors. And just to make it all the sweeter - the price points are unbelievably reasonable. They will be arriving this week for you to touch and feel for yourself, so please make a point to come visit. And until I see you face to face, enjoy the preview below.

Linen with a punch. I would love a pillow out of this fabric.

Cut velvet fabrics in cool designs and colors.

The perfect scale of chevron on linen. The colors are good. (Very similar to the Quadrille line, but much less expensive.)

Everyone could use a touch of Adler to add some fun in the home!

Peace!
