Atlanta Rug Market 2012- Welcome Back Color!

It has been over a week since I returned from the Atlanta Market with a camera full of pictures. I have just now had time to download them, and I am excited to share them with you. Consider it a mid-winter treat. This year's trip was short and sweet -- with just enough time to find some new rug importers, a handful of fun accessory and furniture lines, and, of course, to be inspired once again.

Lamb stool - fun, chic and reasonable.

The above lamb stool is one of my favorite finds. I have seen several versions lately in all my favorite
magazines, but this one has an added edge with the chrome legs. I envision it sitting beneath my dressing table in my new closet or under my sofa table to add a bit of glamour.

3x6 one-of-a-kind oushak

I grabbed this unique oushak which would be perfect for an entry hall. It is unusual to find an oushak with a soft white gray background and soft pink and blue accents. Most oushak rugs have a yellow cast, making this one a real treasure. As such, I snatched it up knowing I would be able to find it a perfect home.


Overdyed solid rugs in turquoise and purple.

Over dyed rugs are still gaining strength and seem to be here to stay. The beautiful thing about over dyed rugs is that they are all unique. I found a rug importer that had the most beautiful over dyed rugs. Many of his rugs were vintage, but they all looked antiqued. I love this faded look with the pattern coming through. This particular importer explained that the process he uses to dye his rugs, allows for them not to bleed (a major concern with over dyes in the past).

This little gem just arrived via UPS the other day. I can't wait to display it in the showroom.

This splatter rug - completely one of a kind - is all the rage. I can't wait to see a room decorated around it.


This Union Jack rug is available in all colors. They are a combination of the over dye rugs and pattern.

The Union Jack rugs are also rising in popularity. We did order a few of these but they will not arrive for another month or so. Available in all colors, as well as the traditional (below). What a great conversation piece.

I can see the above Union Jack in a study with rich leather, as well as a sitting room with all white fabrics and this as the focal point.

One of my favorite things at market is to meet the designers that design for rug, fabric, and furniture lines. The above designs are by Jakub Staron of J.D. Staron Carpets. His sense of style and color is exquisite, as are his designs. The above designs are all made to order and available in any color.

Lastly, my current great obsession -- the Moroccan rugs. The one below is one of a kind by J.D. Staron and will soon be at Eatman's for all to see.

A Touch of Green

Elle Decor 2011

My friend Hattie, hates the color green. She doesn't like any shade of green. From chartreuse lime to a rich velvet olive, it just puts her in a bad mood. But for me, it is the perfect color. It breathes life into a room, just like fresh cut grass brings that perfect manicured lawn alive. In my opinion, every room needs a touch of green. It reminds me there is life outside. During these cold January days, we all need that reminder. Life (and spring) are just around the corner.

The fresh green hydrangea's make the room complete.

2011 Holiday Doors -- Is One Yours?

One of my favorite things to do at Christmas time is to ride around and get inspired by holiday decorations. For the last two years, I have photographed and written about my favorite doors. The response has been so overwhelming, I am making it an Inspire Me Christmas tradition. So once again, I invite you to scroll through my favorite doors. Is one yours?

The simple red ribbon speaks volumes.

I love these wreaths with the gold crosses hanging in the middle. 'Tis the reason for the season.

My Christmas List

We have been receiving packages daily here at the store. It is like Christmas morning, as I open up the boxes of items I ordered months before. At this fall's furniture market, I was a bit preoccupied with lighting, primarily due to the fact that my own home needed a lighting updo, but also because our clients had expressed a variety of lighting needs. I tend to purchase things for the store that I would like in my own home or I can envision in the homes of my friends. That said, with every delivery to the showroom floor, I am giddier than before. These delights may just be better than what I remembered. Perhaps, I should make a new Christmas list of my own.

Dear Santa,
Should any of the following treats end up under my tree or in any needy corner of my home, I promise to be a very good girl all next year...

Apparently someone else had these on their list too, as they were out the door within hours of being put on the showroom floor. But never fear, I can order more and in other colors as well. (They come in black, navy and blush. I will let you know when they arrive, or contact me if you would like to place a special order.)

Also on my wish list is this Jonathan Adler Meurice Sconce, which just arrived. It is shown below as a sconce. However, if Santa comes through for me, I will use it as a ceiling flush mount in my guest room.

Another Jonathan Adler creation that I'd like to call my own are the Parker sconces. These would work beautifully in a hallway, bath, or even above fireplace. I am thinking about using these in one of my client's master closets.

This art deco flush mount looks like it is already wrapped up for Christmas. What a sophisticated piece! And it also provides excellent light for any room. A wonderful price point, as well -- $385.

I must confess, I could not wait. This Lawrence flush mount by Visual Comfort is already hanging in my home, but I did get one for the store too. It comes in two sizes, so it can work in any size room.

I love this Saarinean side table with marble top we just received. At 20" wide, it is small enough to be placed beside a club chair and large enough to sit beside a sofa.

The tulip chair below is standard with a round black cushion, but I would cover it in either a hide or a bright colored fabric - as I have shown roughly below. Santa should know that I bought this one for the store and one for myself. (Positive thinking never hurt any girl inspired.) This will make the perfect desk chair in my daughter's new room.

This floor lamp below is one of my best finds, and you may just need to add it to your own wish list. It is a simple, yet stylish and hits the perfect price point of only $250.

But I saved the best for last. The Alder Bond Desk below with burl top and lucite legs is by far my favorite thing in the store at the moment. I love a writing desk that looks sleek and sophisticated, yet is still functional with self closing front drawers. In one powerful, bold and sleek stroke, it adds a punch of modern to a traditional setting. And, it affords the perfectly stylish (and functional) place to sit with pen and paper to list your resolutions for 2012.

Big-Boy Rooms

Aside from my recent detour to all the new finds of Market, my focus lately has been on children's rooms. I am currently working with several moms to transition their nurseries to big boy and girl rooms. There are so many directions to take in making this change that it can be overwhelming. I always like to have photos of inspiration at my finger tips to show clients what can be done in an effort to define their goals. Luckily, I have files and files on hand in anticipation of such projects.

Here are some of my favorites for big-boy rooms.

Twin beds are always my preference in children's rooms. There are so many things you can do with them. This photo is from Alessandra Branca's book, New Classic Interiors. I love the canopies, toile wall paper, and striped fabric. A wonderful throwback to Mary Poppins.

Another inspiration from Alessandra Branca's book New Classic Interiors. This English look is timeless. Notice the shades on the floor lamps are made to look like drums. And the sconces are tin Napoleonic hats!

Every child seems to love bunk beds. And for those lucky kids that get to share a room, they are perfect space savers. The design team of Nathan Egan Interiors helped a New York City family save a bit of space all while adding entertainment with the bunk bed puppet theater!

This little boy's room is decorated with a extra large size world map by Hammacher Schlemmer. This is also a great way to disguise boring closet doors, as well as learn geography! I wish I had one of these when I was growing up.

This nursery can definitely grow with the little boy. The wall paper is a photograph taken by the little boys father, photographer Pieter Estersohn, while in India. I love the antique rug and light.

Domino, the book of decorating

This urban cowboy themed room by decorator, Vesta Fort, is a fun mix of vintage items. The cowboy curtains set the stage for the old west decor. I like the unexpected zebra headboards, the dark wood floors, and vintage twin beds.

At the end of the day, there are lots of possibilities for your little man. Make it a fun project -- use your imagination, factor in his interests and let be inspired!

The vanCollier Debut Collection

Katie Koon, myself, and Beth Collier of Van Collier.

It was two years ago that my dear friend Katie Koon introduced me to her childhood friend, Beth Collier. The three of us sat in my conference room discussing the direction of my family business and vanCollier's development as a wholesale furniture design business. I had been itching to move Eatman's into a more designer-centric showroom, where designers would showcase their work. My vision was that Eatman's would be a destination where designers and homeowners alike would come to be inspired. About this time, Beth, a seasoned interior designer and art major, and Chris, her husband, himself an antique and furniture aficionado, had decided to start designing furniture to the trade. She needed a platform - a store to display her new designs and ideas. I needed something unique, exclusive and exciting to display in my store. It was a perfect fit.

We sanctioned off an area for vanCollier to display all their beauties in my family's store. With the help of this blog and your loyal following, we began to get the word out of the new furniture/accessory designer. While Beth and Chris painstakingly went through the process of finding manufacturers for their designs, I welcomed any and all prototypes to our store.

After two years, vanCollier made its official debut last week at the High Point Furniture Market as a wholesale design business. I am so proud of them and excited for their future that I can hardly contain myself. What a testimony to hard work, perseverance, friendship and being inspired!

My all-time favorite vanCollier item, the Ginkie Martini Table. This collection was inspired by a magnificent Ginkgo Tree on the lawn of the Collier's home. I have ordered one for my new sitting room, and I can't wait to get my hands on it. The prototype still sits in our store, but the finished product is on its way.

The Malcolm Collection is made up of tobacco sticks from North Carolina tobacco fields. I love the coffee table, chandeliers, and chair & ottoman. I am ordering a coffee table in gilded gold finish for my showroom. Any finish and any size available.

Candy Colored "Silver" Tray

I love the above candy colored "silver" tray. Available in red, blue, black and clear. An original and exclusive design from vanCollier. I predict it is destined to become one of the next "IT" items, following the over dyed rugs and piece tables.

Ginkgo Bren wall brackets flank original work by famed artist Marcus Reichert. Beth met the artist when she was working at a North Carolina museum where his art was on display. They became great friends, and she has a collection of his amazing artwork.

High Point's Top Ten

I am just now catching my breath after returning from High Point's Furniture Market this past week. Each year I wonder if I will find anything new and exciting. And without fail, I come back inspired and eager for our new products to arrive. This year, I was specifically thrilled to find several new sources for lighting, rugs, and home accessories. Although most of my photo's are still in the editing stage, I managed to choose my top ten favorites. Enjoy.

1. Van Collier's Greek Key Ottoman shown here covered in cow hide. Base available in black, white or custom colors.

2. Marble Top Extension Table. What a great conversation piece! You can push it together to compact it into a coffee table or extend it out such that stands as a linear bench. So functional, so unique, and so sophisticated. (Each piece spins, as well. Perfectly playful!)

3. Beeline's new Piece Table. Each piece can stand alone or together. We saw a variety of piece tables in different show rooms. I love the classic clean lines of this one. (This concept is great for homes that need to shift from functional to fancy, depending on if the kids are in bed.)

4. New "Murano-like" Chandelier at an amazing price point of $999. Normally these run around $2500 or higher. I ordered one for our floor, and it should be arriving any day. Can't wait!

5. Chevron Over Dyed Rugs & Ikat Rugs. Last year the patchwork and solid over dyed rugs made their debut. This year, it is the chevron over dyed. Available in any color. See swatches below.

Following the Ikat fabrics from last year, the Ikat rugs debuted this year. I love the multiple blue shades and cream in the rug above.

6. Unusual Art Pieces. I am always looking for art work that can make a room. I love this contemporary piece. I bought it as well as its mate and will hang it in our store above an antique dresser. Or...just maybe... it will end up in my home.

7. Johnathan Adler made its first appearance at High Point this year. I was thrilled to see the collection, as I have always loved his style. The products and price points are reasonable, and I decided to pick up the line for Eatman's as a dealer. This means we will have the line for you to see in person and purchase at the same price as online or in an Adler store.

8. Gilded Mirror. I am always looking for good mirrors. This seems like a basic mirror that would be easy to find, but it is not. The finish is perfection, and it can go either traditional or contemporary. Very versatile, I see it in a bathroom, a bedroom or a foyer. Very elegant.

9. Mary MacDonald Table Lamps. This was one of my favorite finds this year. Available in peach, cream, and soft pale pink. I love the pink and, of course, purchased it for the showroom. It will be a few months before it arrives, but I will be sure to let you know when it gets here.

10. John Rosselli's New Chandelier. Absolutely love it, and it will be heading our way sometime early next year.

Big Girl Room

Style and Substance by Margaret Russell

My little girl is growing up. At 51/2, she is already showing signs of amazing creativity. As I watch her grow, I try not to squelch her creative spirit, even when our tastes do not fall in line with one another. With eyes trying not to scrutinize, I even allow her to dress the way she likes (within reason). It has taken me time to actually appreciate her choices, and now I see them, through her joyful eyes, as an expression of her beautiful imagination.

This life-as-a-parent lesson has served as a gentle guide as we make decisions for her Big Girl Room as part of a small home makeover. As I have reviewed magazines and design books for ideas, I have been greatly inspired and 'nudged' by this sense of independence, of a girl's need to be creative, and ultimately of that special place in the heart of a girl to be GIRL.

We should all embrace this spirit as we create our homes and our spaces. Enjoy.

I marked this picture for several reasons. Our little attic renovation has small nooks in which I envision the bed to fit. I love the use of the three-light sconce over the bed. It is perfect when you do not have a lot of space for tables and lamps. I also like the bright pops of color in the walls, curtains, and on headboard.

I love this picture - partly because it reminds me of an old farmhouse bedroom, and partly because I love the excitement in the eyes of this little girl. The use of wallpaper on the ceiling plays to our imaginations, and the clothes line holding miniature bears speaks volumes to the joys of childhood.

This room is definitely more 'tween. The use of vintage pieces and bright colors gives the room vitality while still keeping it interesting and grounded. The bed is definitely something this young girl could take with her through life.

This London bedroom of Jimmy Choo's granddaughter was decorated by Martyn Lawrence-Bullard. I have used this photo in an earlier blog but wanted to share it again. This bedroom could go from child's room to guest room in a matter of minutes. I love the rug hanging on the wall behind the day bed, as well as the beautiful blue glass lamps.

Another sconce! This time a 4-light vintage sconce by Jean Royere. I must like this look. I hope my daughter does too. Note the the fashion sketches by Bill Blass to the right of the bed. I do plan to take some of my daughter's sketches, matte and frame them and hang in her new room.

Because I have decided to allow my 5 year old to help decorate her new room, I am pretty sure it will have a style all its own. And though it may not have the glamorous components of those featured above, it will be beautiful nonetheless. I can't wait to show it to you.

The End of Summer!

Labor day weekend comes to a close, signaling the end of summer. As I logged on to start writing, I realized that I failed to publish a blog the entire month of August.

This past month all my time has been confiscated by deadlines at the office, juggling of childcare, and handling a tiny renovation in our home (that has since exploded). As you will notice by the photo's below, my focus has been on white rooms with lots of color. We are renovating our attic to make some breathing room for our 5 year old daughter. My plan is to paint everything stark white and give our new kindergartner some (carefully guided) choices of fabrics and artwork in her favorite colors. I can't wait for you to see the final result.

In addition I am overflowing with excitement of things to come in the next few months. A child's haven, an office renovation, and a master closet/dressing area are among the upcoming post that I can't wait to share with you.

For now, please enjoy some of my favorite ideas and inspiration for our little project.

I love to see the creativity of young designers. After creating a sticker wall covering for her senior thesis in college, Payton Cosell Turner, was asked to create something for a small Manhattan Art gallery. She caught the eye of several designers and created the above bedroom for Carol McFadden. I can't believe she used over 5000 stickers of anything from bugs, candy, and popcorn bags. How much fun!

What a great idea for a 5 year old's bedroom, or at least inspiration for yours truly!

Bahamian Cottage

Some of my fondest childhood memories are summers spent in my grandmother's cottage in the late 1970's.

As I was researching for a project, I came across this article in the February 2011 issue of Coastal Living Magazine. Although my grandmother's cottage was not quite as glamorous, the article reminded me of those beautiful summers.

As I turned the pages of the magazine, I felt like I was walking back in time. I instantly fell in love with Bahamian shop owner, Marcie Bond's 1963 cottage. Her charming home, renovated in 2005, is located in New Providence Island.

Marcie collaborated with decorators, John Fondas (her brother and shop owner) and friend Amanda Lindroth. I love the fact that they used retro pieces and fabrics all in keeping with the era in which the cottage was built.

This year, this will have to be my virtual vacation spot!

The majority of the furniture pieces date back to the 60's & 70's. The scale is just right for a small cottage. Love the white lamps with the pink shades.

I love how she used tourism ads from the 60's & 70's as artwork in her banquet area. The hot pink matte and bamboo frames really stand out against the white walls. Coastal Living, February 2011

The canopy headboard hangs over a mirrored lattice headboard. The China Seas fabric used for both canopy and bed skirt has been in the line since the 1960's. The silver garden stool and floor lamps keep in line with the era.

The Color Purple

I must admit, purple is not my favorite color. In fact up until recently, I truly detested it. I am not sure why. Maybe it has something to do with an early childhood memory. Was it that awful purple jumpsuit I received from Santa that year when I really wanted a puppy? All I know is that I have never used purple in my home and it has never filled my wardrobe. Sure, an occasional piece of clothing here or there but only a tiny bit and it must be a particular shade.

This is not to say that I don't admire the color purple on others or in their home. I do see the need for it. I can even appreciate it. After all, it is the color associated with royalty.

When you have a child, things change. My 5 year old daughter LOVES the color purple. Ever since she could pick up a crayon or marker, purple has been making its way into our home. In fact, I have a beautiful work of art drawn directly on our bedroom door in various shades of purple crayola.

My fondness for this color is growing and I catch myself looking at fabrics and paint colors with a new light. With my daughter in mind, I have been researching some options for a purple room. Here are some rooms and fabrics that have not only inspired me to like the color purple, but to use it too!

All about the BLUES!

Last week I was inspired by all things white, but this week I am all about the BLUES! And it seems everyone else is too! From the classic navy blue and white to cobalt and turquoise, blue is everywhere. I am finding blue in new fabrics, carpets, rugs, and even accessories. For years, little girls all over the South were taught by their prim and proper mother's to wear white ONLY between Memorial Day and Labor Day - the true summer months.

These rules have now gone by the wayside and many of us (myself included) pull out our skinny white jeans at the first sign of spring. However, I still feel a bit of relief when Memorial Day hits and I can wear those white items with out wondering if I have insulted my mother or grand mother.

As I was riding back from the beach this past Memorial Monday, I received an email alerting me of a shipment that would be arriving this week. These beautiful white speckled Italian Glass lamps I ordered months ago are finally here just in time for the summer (pictured below). Thankfully, in the design industry, white is a color we use year round! I decided to share some other white hot items that I love for summer and all year long.

Decorating with white can brighten a room, highlight everything around it, and helps to open up the room to create the illusion that the room is larger. Whether you're painting your walls white or using white accessories, it creates such a fresh look. The key is to not obsess about matching your whites. White works great with any style room, whether you're going for a traditional, soft look or a more edgy, modern style. Warm whites soften the room and add a sense of comfort and charm, while bright whites create a modern and minimalist look.

Kelly Jones - An Updated Portfolio

Local designer, Kelly Jones, has been busy over the past few months. With spring settling in and summer fast approaching, clients are once again ready to brighten up their living spaces. Whether it is thanks to a punch of color in a pretty painting, the boldness of fresh floral fabrics, or vibrant accessories that make a statement -- clients seem to be saying 'see ya later' to the neutrals as color swoops in to steal the show. And what a show it is!

Two of her clients have graciously allowed Jones to share some photos with me. Homeowner Elizabeth Merritt, enjoys the designer's pops of color in her family room. (Shown above and below.) Here, the floor is covered by a flat weave reversible rug by Surya. This is a wonderful choice for any home, but especially those looking for fun colors, interesting design, reasonable pricing and ease of living for a family. (This rug and all the flat weaves are available in my store.)

The coffee table setting is actually two end tables by Bungalow 5, also available at Eatmans. This is a clever way to add versatility to a room without losing functionality. The fabric on the club chairs is 'Aga Reverse' by Quadrille. The bright floral pillows on the sofa are in 'Anichov' by Designer's Guild. The painting above the sofa is a custom for the homeowner by Raines Thompson.

Below are photos from the home of Corey Monk. Again, Jones used rich browns with green accents, but with a completely different effect. In the living room, Jones used 'Granny Smith' velvet by Dogwood Fabrics combined with a cream leather ottoman by Lee Industries. The sofa and its pillows compliment this pairing by adding an ikat fabric by Lee Industries and a Greek Key pattern by Duralee. The overall effect is handsome, yet very comfortable. The use of green adds the pop and the strong neutrals keep it grounded.

Monk's foyer has an easy elegance about it. Without trying to steal the attention away from the living spaces, the foyer serves its purpose beautifully as it welcomes anyone to the home. This sunburst mirror which is of a good quality and finish is timeless. The console is by World's Away.

A Mighty (and Magnificent) Fortress

On the heels of the Royal Wedding with fairy tale feelings floating through the spring air, I was touched to hear of another little dream come true - right here in our home town. The story begins where most "house" stories begin. That is, a couple begins a search for the place that is to be their family home. The place where memories will be made, friendships formed and a life lived out. For Jimmy and Anna Goodman, the search led them back in time.

After looking around the area, Jimmy's parents offered the couple the opportunity to buy the empty lot next to his childhood home. It was a piece of property decorated by an amazing azalea garden, views of a private lake, and most importantly, one that housed Jimmy's childhood fort. After considering the opportunity, the couple accepted the gracious offer and set out to make that plot of land (and fortress remnant) a home of their own.

The couple enlisted architect, Rodney Ward, of Ward Design Group to help them with their plans. Although Anna and Jimmy have their own sense of style, they augmented their vision with the help of interior designer, Laura Ward. Laura facilitated in making the numerous decisions required when building a custom home.

The dream became a reality. The fort is now a home, and a gorgeous one at that. I was lucky enough to receive an invitation to see the fairy tale in real life. And what a gift it was! Enjoy.

This foyer is gorgeous with wood paneled walls, a beautiful staircase, and a wonderfully unexpected chandelier.

You can never go wrong with the classic leopard wool runner.

One of my favorite things about this house was the hardwood herringbone pattern on the floor stained in dark chocolate black.

To the right is the entrance to the living room.

I love the coffee table and the lime green lamp!

Walking into the family room, which is also open to the kitchen, the Goodmon's chose a combination of traditional and contemporary pieces. Note: the rug on the floor is by Stanton carpets and a great choice for a high traffic area.

Love the simple neutral colors with splashes of turquoise and green.

Windows line the back of the house for the perfect view looking out onto the lake. Who wouldn't love this view?


The kitchen in all white and black with simple pendant lights is clean and classic. This unique back splash in the butler's pantry reminds me of glass bubbles.

I love Anna's choice of table, chairs, and chandelier. This Nuevo Chandelier is such a great statement piece, and the table is sublime!

Bright orange and tangerine colors are so perfect for this house. Anna took some of her parents' dining room chairs and stripped and painted them herself. Brilliant! And I love the two pendant chandeliers hanging over the dining room table.

If I lived in this gorgeous home, I would spend many hours in the sun room (below). What a perfect little sanctuary!

Not Your Average Split Level

Until I was 5 years old, I lived in a split level house. Think shag carpet, dark paneled walls, and plaid, plaid, plaid. When I drive by a split level, I always revert back to my childhood and envision the design of old.
That was then. After my most recent 'split' encounter, I now have a new vision for such homes. A friend invited me over to see her home and offer some suggestions for lamps for her den -- an invitation I accepted happily. She had just purchased one of my favorite coffee tables from our store, and I was eager to see it in its final setting. The owner/friend is an interior designer on hiatus while she raising her two precious children, so I knew her house would be great. I drove up to a lovely split level home - painted brick, long front porch. I stepped inside, and let's just say it was no place like my home of old.

Market is always exciting, albeit a bit stressful. I am like a kid in a very large candy store! Fortunately, my mother & business partner, Gay Eatman, travels with me and keeps me in check. We spent four long days scouring buildings looking for new lines and products. It has taken me days to get all my pictures downloaded and I want to share a few of the high lights. From antique & contemporary flat weave rugs to new chandelier designs and sconces to some of my favorite consoles....I'd say the trip was a success!

Thankfully we were INSPIRED by all our new market finds and hope you will be too. Most of the items pictured will be trickling into our store over the next few weeks and months. But let me know if anything strikes your fancy and you will be the first to know when the truck pulls up!

Over-dyed production rugs were all the rage this year at market. Hand knotted rugs dyed in bright colors such as fuschia, canary, and cobalt blue.

New 2011 Kravet Fabrics!

Holly Halterman with Kravet Fabrics stopped by Friday to show us a few new fantastic introductions for 2011! If you have not already heard Kravet (who also owns Lee Jofa & Threads) just purchased Brunschwig & Fils. This expansion allows the company to offer even more high end textiles.

Through out all the Kravet lines, the trend seems to be bold designs, stripes, florals, and the use of bright colors such as orange, pinks, greens, and yellows.

For all those music lovers...take a look at the new woven panel of the Beatles designed by Andrew Martin for Kravet. What a great way to make a statement in a fun room!

vanCollier Designs

It has been some time since I have updated you on our recently showcased designers. Hard at work, Beth and Chris Collier have launched a line of home accessories that is in production at present. Inspired predominantly from the larger-than-life Ginkgo tree in the courtyard of their historical residential development in Washington, NC, each piece takes what nature did to perfection and makes it permanent in the form of gilded sconces, coffee tables and lighting. As spring tempts us from just around the corner and the trees all about us seem eager to burst forth in their own leafy color, there could not be a more opportune time to showcase vanCollier's designs.

Most of these items are in the store, so please come view them in person. They are simply sublime.

Big City Comes to Town

Last week I had the pleasure of visiting the home of Ashley and Bonner Gaylord. I had never met Ashley, but we share a mutual friend who insisted that I must see her home and feature it on the blog. And while I am usually hesitant to make introductions like this on my own, I ultimately took the plunge and made the phone call essentially inviting myself to take a peak around. She graciously accepted my self-invitation, and the rest was love at first sight.

I pulled up in the driveway and took in the traditional architecture. Elegant. Classic. Ok. I get it, I thought. And then I stepped inside. To say I was awestruck is an understatement. To say I fell in love, maybe closer to true. It was like walking through Palm Beach, New York and LA all at once. And it ALL FLOWED beautifully! Both husband and wife worked together to decorate this unique masterpiece, and their individual marks on the home make the perfect statement. In a society where everyone is striving a house 'just like that one', it was truly a gift to see a home so loved and adorned by its owners that it told a story all its own. And it was beautiful story. It is a house that is decorated from within. Exactly the way a home should be.

I am so inspired, and I hope you are too!

The foyer sets the stage for a home filled with a unique twist of contemporary & traditional pieces mixed with splashes of bright colors.

The white and black walls in the foyer are hand painted by local artist Raines Thompson. To the right is the office which is also photographed below.

The husband's office is filled with objects of his desire. I love the surf boards and deer head.

One of my favorite things in the house is the unique bookshelves designed by Bonner Gaylord.

I love the simplicity of the bold orange round mirror hanging over the Chinese hall table.


The living room off the foyer is a combination of Palm Beach and New York City. The chandelier and lucite coffee table are perfect pieces for this room. Notice the mirrored wall with fretwork mimicking bookshelves in office across hall.

This butlers pantry off the living room showcases another hand painted wall by the talented, Raines Thompson.

Fresh fruit and a contemporary painting sit on the kitchen counter.

The kitchen is simply divine with the clean crisp white cabinets and white marble counter tops.

Ashley and Bonner have a gift of combining contemporary and traditional pieces. The painting and light hanging over the robins egg blue dining table and chairs is picture perfect.

The family room off the kitchen holds a sectional sofa with clean lines. To the right are 4 floral panels Ashley made herself from sheets found at a flea market!

The galley kitchen with all its white, is a great back drop for masterpieces by their 3 yr old daughter, Gigi.

I love the master colors! You can never go wrong with a white tufted headboard and white gourd lamps.

The master bath follows the flow of the house...clean lines and bold accent colors.

At the top of the stairs, a tricycle parked in the corner is a great reminder that this is not only a house, but a home!

A Daly Renovation

Renovate or move? It is a question that many a homeowner faces as families grow and house requirements change. And it is not an easy dilemma. Uprooting a family, changing neighborhoods and finding a house within your budget that also meets your family's needs is not an easy proposition. Similarly, working through the details of planning a renovation, making all the home selections and living to tell the tale is no walk in the park either.

Most people say they like their house, but they need extra closet space, a larger kitchen, a playroom for the kids, an outdoor living space - or some combination of these things. After careful thinking Julie and John Daly decided to renovate with the help of Dempsey Hodges Construction. The outcome was exactly what they needed.... a little extra space in all the right places.

The Dalys were gracious enough to allow me to come walk through the final product and snap some photos as I toured. Perhaps, they will inspire you as much as they did me.

The original foyer (gray slate) was removed and new hardwood floors were installed to match those existing throughout the home. The warmth of the wood layered with the beautiful oushak rug make for a perfect entrance.

The breakfast area and sitting room added living space to the kitchen and are both used daily!

I love the ivory and tan cowhide she chose for the sitting area. The pony leg stool is a unique piece which makes a statement with out being over the top.

Every home needs a desk near the kitchen for the mail and computer. This room serves as office and mudroom.

A perfect place for hats, gloves, shoes and jackets!

The master bath was added complete with double sinks and a walk in closet (below).

Every woman needs a walk in closet like this!

Perfect for entertaining, the enclosed outdoor porch serves as an extension of family room and dining room.

Did you know the color pink is the universal color of love? Pink is often chosen for a room to present a sense of positive energy and relaxation. While red is often a color chosen by extroverts, as well as being a top choice for men. We often associate red with passion and love. My Sanctuary

A bedroom should be your sanctuary. It is the first thing we see in the morning and the last thing we see each night. A bedroom is personal, and should be a reflection of us. It is said that we spend about one-third of our existence in our bedrooms. So attention must be paid when it comes to decorating it. My husband and I decorated our bedroom over six years ago, when we got married. It is beginning to look a little dated, and could use a pick-me-up. Lately I have been drawn to all things bedrooms! I love getting new ideas, and I hope to use some of this inspiration for my own bedroom.

One baby is a blessing. Three (at once) is triple the joy! Local interior designer, Kelly Jones, hosted a baby shower for friend, Kathleen Fisher, and thoughtfully shared a few of the pictures with me. I loved the ideas Kelly used to decorate for the shower...everything was three times the fun! Kelly also included a few pictures of her house, which I thought you'd like to see. Enjoy!

I love the walls in Kelly's dining room. At first sight, the walls look like they are covered in De Gournay wallpaper, but they were actually hand painted by Kelly's friend, Raines Thompson (http://www.mekdesigns.com/)

Flowers always make a powerful statement.

The shower invite was framed & placed on the mantle in the den.

Such a creative idea! Nests with three eggs were placed in the room to signify the triplets!

This sitting room is my favorite...blue and white with a touch of gray!

Kelly's daughter, Ella, has the room of a princess! I love the classic look.

I am now itching to redecorate my 5 year old's room.
