I felt this was a resilient city .. notice the plants, the fabulous architecture, the iron work and the electricity wires like zentangles across the blue skies.

visit me at www.fadwas-inspirational.blogspot.com to see more.

Something to share

"The truly creative mind in any field is no more than this:
A human creature born abnormally, inhumanly sensitive.
To him...
a touch is a blow,
a sound is a noise,
a misfortune is a tragedy,
a joy is an ecstasy,
a friend is a lover,
a lover is a god,
and failure is death.
Add to this cruelly delicate organism the overpowering necessity to create, create, create - - - so that without the creating of music or poetry or books or buildings or something of meaning, his very breath is cut off from him. But that's another story. There were a lot of army clad, weapon carrying men - not as handsome as the army clad, weapon carrying security at Rome, boy these Romans are handsome, but that's also another story.

We arrived at the hotel, located in central Beirut (in Arabic Ras Beirut - literally Head of Beirut). The hotel was OK, except for a tiny problem .. when I switched on the light, the light bulb started to smoke and drip water, simaltaneously. The electrician came to fix it, but could not. Solution: use the other smaller, dimmer light above the mirror. To be fair, this was not a 5-star hotel, just your regular run of the mill hotel owned by Syrians, run by Lebanese and with Palestinian illegal employees. You see, Palestinians still live in refugee camps in Beirut and they are not allowed to live or work outside those camps .. but, again, that's another story. (Through my lens: rooftop view of refugee camp and one of the narrow passageways all around the camp).

visit me at www.fadwas-inspirational.blogspot.com to see more.

My Trip to Beirut

As some of you may know, I recently visited Beirut for the first time as an adult. I was there as a very young child and I don't really remember much. Please remember these are my observations and personal thoughts on my own experience. I do not intend to generalise, but rather to tell you a story though my eyes and with tongue in cheek :-).
Episode (1)

We took Fly Dubai; the price was amazingly cheap and the service was reasonable for an economy flight. But I had a strong feeling that I was in a bus not a plane. There were many empty seats. People walked up and down the isle freely, stopping to chat here and there. Children also roamed the isle just a little more freely than their parents.

At first one poor baby could not stop crying and I thought that was going to be our inflight entertainment for the next three and a half hours.

As it turned out, the real inflight entertainment was people watching :-) .. and the best episode we saw was of this man who was chatting up a woman in a tight and short dress as an older lady who sat next to her, and who I assumed was her mother, was piously covered up.

The man 'subtly' inched his way up the isle until he found a seat opposite hers.

He smiled and said "Bonjourek," the very creative way the Lebanese have of conjoining French and Arabic. 'Bonjour' French for good morning and 'ek' Arabic suffix meaning to you/feminine. (In Amman, Jordan, they have their own way of conjoining Arabic with English - and the youth speak Arabeezi prounced in Arabic it means Arab(ic)-(Eng)lish.

"Bonjourak," she replied. Don't you just love the scent of orange zest? And what about the orange blossom? In April, in Spain, the whole atmosphere is scented with orange blossoms; it's highly intoxicating.

I drew the Rose bottle on a separate piece of paper; I liked it, so I cut and pasted it into this page. I felt the background, texture and colour evoked the feel and aroma of the zest and blossoms of oranges, so I did not want to add anything else. I just wrote 'be inspired' around the edges and created a simple border.

I will start posting photos, journal pages and thoughts about my trip to Beirut soon, meanwhile I will share with you the final pages of my recently filled-up journal.

visit me at www.fadwas-inspirational.blogspot.com to see more.

Another Dubai Skyline

There are just so many sky scrappers here, with so many different designs. There's also an amazing dancing fountain which sways and undulates to the traditional Gulf music of this region and to classics and opera, too. It is a stunning sight (I could not draw it - maybe I will try to capture it on video to share sometime). Sometimes I cannot make up my mind about whether or not I like manmade canals, waterways, souks, etc .. sometimes they seem too fake. Yet, if I surrender to the feeling of pleasure when I am within such surroundings, the pleasure is innocent and sincere. Is it truly 'fake' because its manmade? Or is it all the more creative because it was created by the hands of man?

visit me at www.fadwas-inspirational.blogspot.com to see more.

Release

Sometimes, when things get too much, the best thing to do is just release -let them all go.
