Social networks like Facebook is supposedly killing the art of blogging. Still, I think there's a place for blogs in cyberspace and that which neither FB nor any other social network sites can replace. So, for those of you who have blogs, keep blogging...

Until I get around to "resuscitating" this blog, you'll find me on the other side of cyberspace called Facebook... :))

Hector Olivera

I don't think I can find the right word or enough superlatives to describe this man. Prodigy? Musical genius? Amazing? Seems inadequate to describe a man that's truly God's gift to the music world.

I had the privilege to attend a workshop conducted by Mr Hector Olivera at the Roland Training Center this afternoon and came away with the utmost respect for him. Even after many decades of performing to tens of thousands of organ and keyboard fans and enthusiasts, he is still as passionate about his concerts as day one. This man is not slowing down even a wee bit. Hector, who was a special guest on NTV7's Breakfast Show this morning, said that he especially loves to perform to children.

During the workshop, Hector took us on a journey and explored the Roland Atelier organ. We learnt so much from him and discovered so many new features of the organ. His pure, unadulterated technique, style & arrangements make him one of the very few organists who takes every concert to a level that only a genius like him can. He makes the organ sound good, not the other way around. Listening to his orchestral arrangements played on the organ is like listening to a live orchestra! I was truly blown away!!!

Yet, this man, who likes to use analogies and with lots of humour thrown in for good measure, is unassuming, down-to-earth and "pooh poohs" the standing ovations that has become part and parcel of his concerts. We talked like we are old buddies.

So, I'm soooo looking forward to the concert tomorrow (Sat). Actually, I can hardly wait for it... really. If Roland promises to bring him here again next year, I'm going to book my ticket now :-).

"The World's Greatest Organist" - live in KL

November 1st is going to be a very special day in the history of live organ concerts in KL. Never before have we had an organist of this class perform in Malaysia. One who is called nothing less than "The World's Greatest Organist"!

What a privilege it is to have an internationally-acclaimed organist coming here to entertain us. And that person I'm raving about here is none other than Hector Olivera.

"Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Hector Olivera's first musical studies began with his father. He started (aged three) playing the pipe organ, was appointed organist for the Church of the Immaculate Conception two years later and, at six, entered the Buenos Aires Conservatory to study harmony, counterpoint and fugue. It was here that he began to develop the art of improvisation and, by the age of nine, had composed a suite for oboe and string orchestra t hat was performed by the Buenos Aires Symphony Orchestra.

He entered the University of Buenos Aires at age 12. By 18, he had performed over 300 concerts throughout Latin America and had appeared frequently on national radio and television. During this time, he also served for three years as the senior improvisational accompanist for the Collegium Musicum in Buenos Aires, a role credited as being a major building block in his noted improvisational abilities.

In 1965, he was offered a scholarship to the prestigious Juilliard School of Music in New York and moved to the United States. Three years later he won the National Improvisation Contest sponsored by the American Guild of Organists and began a concert career that spans decades."

So, finally, the man himself is really coming to KL. Certainly a concert not to be missed because we don't know when he'll be able to perform here again. Just checked Hector's concert schedule on his website and he's already booked through October 2009!

Thanks to Roland Asia Pacific again for bringing us another great concert performer. And I could not believe that tickets are going for only RM50!! For a Hector Olivera concert? Must have been heavily subsidised by Roland.

I know that this blog has not been updated for a loooong time. My apologies if you've been dropping by and hoping for something new to read and have been disappointed.

Anyway, I've got a couple of videos for your viewing/listening pleasure. I was at the Roland organ workshop today conducted by Ryoki Yamaguchi (who was also here last year). Check out my previous post here. This time around, Roland's newest organ, the AT900C was featured. Being the flagship model of the Roland Atelier range of organs, this model has tons of features that'll amaze any organist.

Ryoki's workshop is a prelude to the concert that he'll be performing in this Saturday 23rd August. Organised by Roland, it's called "The Night of the Keys" because besides the Organ, other keyboard instruments like the Accordion, Harpsichord and Pianos will also take centre stage. Indeed a rare opportunity to witness such a concert, especially the Accordion and Harpsichord.

Joining Ryoki, who's from Japan, will be Ludovic Beier from Germany (Accordion), Lynn Kang (Piano & Harpsichord), Ko Chuan Li & Kong Su Mei (Champions in this year's Roland Piano Fest in both the Classical & Jazz categories).

If you've already bought tickets, see you there. If not, you're going to miss a great concert :-(

As you know, Jazz and Musicals are two of my favourite genres of music and that's what you're going to hear in these videos. By the way, what you're going to listen to is only a little of what the Atelier AT900C can do. I know Ryoki is going to spring a few surprises this Saturday.

Abdullah's Bible

Abdullah's Bible

For a country that is not exactly known for its reading habit, we seem to be grabbing a lot of books lately. Or to put it more accurately, we seem to be confiscating and detaining an awful lot of books.

For reasons best known to themselves, the benighted authorities in this land of ours have been vigilantly manning the outposts on the frontier lest we, while sleeping, are caught unawares by the legions of dog-eared tomes that are – at this very moment – surreptitiously on their way to this country to ‘pollute, corrupt and confuse’ our minds. The list of banned books grows ever longer; and the outrages continue unabated. The latest fiasco was when thirty-two Bibles were confiscated by customs officials from a Malaysian Christian on her way back from the Philippines, to be submitted for inspection by the Ministry of Internal Security. Strange that Bibles are now seen by some as a potential ‘security threat’ that need to be confiscated upon entry into the sacred precinct that is Malaysia. But Bibles? A security threat? To whom?

All this talk of ‘dangerous’ texts and potentially dangerous Bibles in particular reminds me of one particular edition of the Bible that caused quite a stir when it first came out. In fact so controversial was this particular edition that it almost never came out at all. For here I am talking about Abdullah’s Bible; or rather the translation of the Bible by none other than Munshi Abdullah Abdul Kadir, who is universally regarded as one of the forefathers of modern Malay literature.

Now those of you who remember what you were taught at school (and believe me, as an academic I am all too familiar with the phenomenon of selective amnesia among students), will also remember the name of Munshi Abdullah. He was the Peranakan Muslim scholar and translator who served both the early British colonial administrators in Singapore and Malacca as well as the various Malay courts during the opening stages of the 19th century.

Abdullah wrote his ‘Hikayat Abdullah’ which stands until today as one of the most honest accounts of the state of the Malay world at that crucial juncture in the history of this region. Abdullah was of course a key figure in the exchange of letters between British colonial administrators like Raffles, Farquhar, Minto, et al. and the Malay nobles and kings. The Hikayat of Abdullah was unique for its pointedly frank observations about all that was wrong with the world he lived in then, though perhaps one of the most interesting and touching episodes in the Hikayat is where Abdullah describes his quarrel with his father, who was afraid that his son might be tempted off the right path by the ‘deviant teachings’ of the English missionaries he was working with.

The thorny issue that was being debated between Abdullah and his peers at the moment was his role as translator for a particular text that many of them were reluctant to touch: The New Testament.

Abdullah had been approached by some English missionaries and commissioned by them to translate the New Testament into vernacular Malay, which was to be used at Church as well as the modest missionary efforts among the colonial subjects of the Crown Colonies. As Malay was the lingua franca of everyone who lived in the straits then (including the Peranakan Chinese, Indians, Eurasians and even the British and Dutch), it was deemed appropriate to have the Bible translated into Malay as well.

Munshi Abdullah who regarded himself primarily as a professional translator was prepared to do the job that scared off all other contenders; until his father came into the picture, spewing steam and hot curses, and swearing that his son would never be converted by the heathen missionaries. In a touching passage of the Hikayat Abdullah describes how he appealed to his father’s own sense of values, and in particular to his father’s own love for knowledge and languages in general. His father was further persuaded by the appeals of the priests Milner and Thomson, who promised that they would respect his father’s wishes and refrain from offering any religious instruction to Abdullah. In the end, Abdullah notes how the appeals eventually won over his father’s consent and he was allowed to continue his study of this foreign language called English. The result of Abdullah’s efforts came in the form of one of the first vernacular Malay translations of the New Testament, the Kitab Injil al-Kudus daripada Tuhan Esa al-Masihi.

Now contrary to the fears and doubts of his friends, Munshi Abdullah was not secretly converted to Christianity as a result of translating the Kitab Injil al-Kudus. No magic Christian pills were plopped into his tea behind his back while he was working in the missionaries’ quarters; nor were there any reported attempts to lure him to the Church by offers of money, promotions or package holidays. As he stated from the outset, he was professional through and through and he carried out his translation work in a scrupulous and objective manner, to the satisfaction of all.

Today one can only wonder aloud about the fate of such a text, should it find itself before the customs officials or immigration desk at KLIA or the Golok crossing up North. If Bibles from the Philippines can be detained upon arrival, what then would be the fate of Abdullah’s Bible, born and bred (or translated and bound) right here, in our dear ‘ol Malaysia? And how would be take to Munshi Abdullah, ‘father’ of modern vernacular Malay literature, pioneer of the vernacular autobiography and realist writing; who also happens to be one of the first translators of the Bible? Or have we, in denying the religious complexity and pluralism of Malaysia today, also closed the door to Malaysia’s past where Muslims seemed less easily spooked by books of whichever tongue?

Coincidence or not?

It was a Friday just like any other. I had a good workout at the gym and even had time to enjoy a sauna session and then relax in the steam room. After a nice refreshing shower I proceeded to have lunch at the Oasis food court. From where I was seated, I could see The Gardens through the glass wall of the food court area and was reminded that it's time for my two-year-old pair of Reeboks cross-trainers to be "retired". I thought that I would take the recently completed overhead bridge and go across to check out the shoes at the New Balance shop over at The Gardens.

I've been there once and found that I can a get pair of cross-trainers for around RM200 which I thought is quite reasonable. Besides, anyone with a valid gym membership card gets a 20% discount, anytime. The owner himself is a really friendly and helpful guy. But suddenly, memories of Christmas eve came flooding back. I shall not digress, but then again, I already have.

Well, like I mentioned, it was Christmas eve and I had some very last-minute gift-shopping to do. After lunch, I decide to use the bridge to get across to The Gardens. It's the most convenient way as it's located very near the Oasis food court. The skies had opened up and was pouring cats and dogs as I made my way to the glass-paneled bridge. I was barely a third of the way across when I realised that water was gushing in from the top of the side glass panels. What was shocking was that water was coming in from the entire length of one side of the bridge. Shoddy workmanship? You bet! The entire floor started to flood faster than you can say "Jeepers creepers, mah shoes gonna git wet!" I had to run, no, hop on the parts of the floor that had not been flooded yet to get across. Phew! Made it. Barely. The maintenance crew were quickly summoned to close the bridge and the "big boys" were brought in to suck up the water. And so, the bridge had to be closed for a few days for repairs to be done and people had to use the lower ground tunnel instead. What an adventure! :-)

Okay, I have really, really digressed. That was not the story I started out to write about. Anyway, to cut a long story short, it started raining again that day so I decided not to go over to The Gardens and will leave my gym shoe shopping for another day. Instead, I went over to Watsons Pharmacy to get a couple of things before going home.

After picking up the stuff I needed, I decided to just browse around the pharmacy looking at some new items. Big mistake! All of a sudden, this lady appeared in front of me and started rambling about this product and about how good it is. She went on about it's proven efficacy, the country of origin, etc, etc...

Lady promoter: Have you heard of Esberitox?

Me: Er, no I don't think so.

Lady promoter: The moment you feel a cold coming, take this and you'll stop it from happening.

Me: Wah, really ah?

Lady promoter: Yes. And it's safe because it's all natural. Made from herbs. Does anyone from your family frequently gets the cold?

Me: No, not really.

Lady promoter: You should keep some handy at home. You can catch a cold anytime, right?

Me: How much is it?

Lady promoter: Seventy-five ringgit for a box. There are five strips.

Me: Wah! Seventy-five ringgit ah?

Lady promoter: You can buy just one strip first (and proceeded to pull out one strip from the box). It's only fifteen ringgit.

Me: Well, I don't want to buy something that I may not use as my family and I hardly ever catch a cold.

Lady promoter: Wah. Your body resistance must be very good then (twitching her eyebrow).

Me: I guess so. Thank you for sharing about this product. I'll keep it in mind should I feel a cold coming on. Thanks.

Lady promoter: You're welcome.

End of story? I wish! That very same night, my throat started feeling sore, then the "achoos" came and my whole body began to feel like it's breaking down. By Saturday morning, my nose was running and I was coughing and coughing and coughing! But I had a whole teaching day ahead. I wanted to cancel my classes but thought that I should try and get through the day as best I can. Besides, I had arranged for a potential new student to come for an assessment that morning. So, I went to work as usual. By evening, my head felt like it was going to explode as I began to experience sharp piercing shots of pain each time I coughed.

On my way home from work, I stopped by the traditional Chinese medical shop to see if I could get something for this cough. I was prescribed a cough and cold concoction to boil and drink to rid me of the cough and phlegm. It actually did help as it greatly reduced the coughing and phlegm. But there was this bit of gooey stuff that refused to budge no matter how hard I tried to cough it out. That made breathing very difficult. I could not lie down to sleep as I was literally gasping for air like a goldfish out of water. That night was probably one of the longest ones I've ever experience as I did not get to sleep at all.

I was disappointed to have had to miss church on the very first Sunday of the new year. I was supposed to play the organ for the service too. I hope the congregation did not have to sing A cappella that morning!

All this while, that little encounter with the Esberitox lady never even crossed my mind until late Sunday evening when I reached for something in my waist pouch and saw the flyer she gave me still in there. I recalled the conversation and what I had said to her. Especially the part about me hardly ever catching a cold. And the way she responded accompanied by the I-don't-really-believe-you eyebrow twitch.

So now I'm thinking. Should I have bought at least one strip from her?

Was this all a coincidence or... well, you decide.

The next time you bump into the Esberitox lady you could...

.. RUN FOR DEAR LIFE!!!

Concerts

The year end school holidays usually mean that there will be lots of concerts to take advantage of the children's free time. It's a good and healthy way for them to occupy their time. They get to expand their knowledge and savour new experiences.

Recently, some of my students at the music school got to experience performing in public. The students' mini concert held at the school allowed them to show off their talent and at the same time, parents are able to see their children's progress. Most of them were playing to a big crowd for the first time and understandably, "butterflies in the stomach" and jittery hands and feet were the order of the day. A few though, took it all in their stride and performed like "old-timers".

One of my young students, 9-year-old Cheng Yen, played the song "Sing" beautifully and I thought I'd share this with you. I absolutely love this song and I can almost hear the Carpenters version reverberate in my head even as I watch this video.

If you're in the mood for something "heavier", then let Benjamin entertain you with the fusion rock piece "Night Rider". Definitely concert material with lots of effects created to give it that ooomph... with a touch of attitude thrown in!

They are young, talented and passionate. And they are called The KLPac Sinfonietta.

"Great Themes from Film & Stage" was what they presented just hours ago in the final performance of their 4-day run. It was a delightful concert performed with gusto. As expected, they have improved much since their inaugural concert a year ago. Under the capable hands of Music Director/Conductor Brian Tan, they are poised to be one of the best home-grown orchestras.

It was 1½ hours of non-stop entertainment from this young orchestra as they served up a full ten-course meal. From Broadway showstoppers to selections from the movies and finally ending with "Sleigh Ride" as the encore.

Kudos to Brian Tan and the KLPac Sinfonietta! Great show. Looking forward to next year's performances.

Orchestra or puppets?

Hmmm... choices, choices! Why not go for both?

The orchestra I'm referring to is the KL Performing Arts Centre (KLPac) Sinfonietta.

I was at their inaugural concert last year themed "Candlelight Christmas". For a young orchestra, I think they performed pretty well. Since the theme was Christmas, they played mostly carols and favourites from Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker Suite. The finale was the powerful "Hallelujah Chorus" from Handel's "Messiah", performed with the 30-member guest youth choir "La Voce". They received a well deserved standing ovation at the end. I'm sure they would have gotten even better since then and I'm looking forward to next month's concert. This time around, they'll be playing music from blockbuster musicals and movie themes.

Sasaki & friends jazz it up!

The Akio Sasaki Jazz Organ Trio was another great concert organised by Roland. It was a memorable night for jazz organ fans (and of course, fans of Sasaki san). Most of us who play the organ would have, at some point in time, played Mr. Sasaki's jazz arrangements. He has published quite a few books of his numerous arrangements of popular jazz compositions.

So, we finally got to see and listen to the man himself. Still in his element though in his late 50's, he thrilled us with his ad libs and improvisational style.

Teaming up with Mr. Sasaki was jazz guitarist Tatsushi Shibata and drummer Hisanori Tsunekawa. Mr. Tatsushi was not only adept at playing the guitar, he took the limelight on two songs playing the harmonica. Not to be left out, Mr. Hisanori showed us his skill by performing a couple of solos on the TD-20K Roland digital drum kit.

The concert ended with "Take the 'A' Train" as the encore. Mr. Sasaki used the jazz scat voice (real human voices) to play this piece. The voices are so amazingly real and the organ intelligently "scat sings" the correct syllables according to the touch (pressure on the keys). Earlier, he also used it on "Satin Doll". Now, if you're hoping to watch videos of the concert, I'll have to disappoint you because I did not shoot any. This time, I just wanted to enjoy the concert. I did not want to keep staring at the camera LCD screen all the time. And it ain't easy trying to keep the camera steady as your arms start to tire after 15mins or so.

Thanks to Roland again for all the great concerts so far. They've promised more goodies next year. One of them would be in the person of Hector Olivera. He is considered one of the world's greatest organists. Who wouldn't be, if you are able to play "Flight of the Bumblebee" with your feet! It would be a real coup if Roland is able to bring him to this part of the world.

Akio Sasaki Jazz Trio

Jazz organ music enthusiasts please take note. Roland will be bringing the Akio Sasaki Jazz Trio to Kuala Lumpur next month. Tickets are priced at only RM30.

They will be performing at the KLCC Plenary Theatre on the 9th of November at 8pm.

Leggy models

I'm talking about those of the six-legged kind. Somehow, windows are one of the favourite "rest stops" of birds, insects and what-have-you. They too, I guess, need to break journey and rest their wings from the long trip to wherever they are going.

Recently, "Mr Bee" stopped by and was busily inspecting my window. I quickly grabbed my camera and went up really close to snap a picture of it. Rather than flying away, it actually stayed long enough for me to shoot a few more photos. Was it too "preoccupied" to notice I was just a hair's-breadth away or was it posing for the camera?

A few days ago, another visitor decided to drop by and this time it was "Mr Fly". Sticking to the window like Garfield on your windscreen, it too, like Mr Bee, did not fly away even when I got really close. My camera lens barrel was touching the glass pane and it would have felt the vibration from the shutter. Even if it didn't, the compound eyes would have easily detected my presence. But no, it decided to pose for the camera.

A stroll @ The Gardens

The Gardens @ Mid Valley, that is. This new mall opened today and I decided to pop over after gym to check it out. So, here are the very first impressions of KL's newest shopping landmark.

This was what greeted me the moment I stepped into The Gardens. Loose wiring hanging everywhere. Exposed fluorescent light tubes still without their panel covers. Doesn't look like they're ready for business as there are still a lot of renovations going on everywhere. Sounds of hammering, soldering and nail guns firing can be heard all over the mall.

Some shops, though open for business, are still without signboards and employees can be seen unpacking stuff and putting up their window displays.

The layout reminds me a lot of Suria KLCC. The one uncomfortable thing is walking around a mall that is covered in dust from the renovations. I had to walk cautiously as the dust made the floor slippery.

The thousands of sparkling lights on the left wall makes them look like twinkling stars in the night sky. Interesting light displays are projected on to the huge panels on the right.

So, there you go. Not too pleased with what I saw today but I'm sure when everything is in place, it'll be another shopping paradise. If you got the dough, that is.

Swingin' & Jazzin' with the MPO

I know I'm a little late in posting this as it happened about a month ago. Anyway, just to break the long silence...

The awesome Petronas Twin Towers that once held the honour of being the tallest building in the
world, is home to Malaysia's very own symphony orchestra, the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra.

The beautiful Dewan Filharmonik Petronas (DFP) sits nestled at the podium level between the soaring towers. For the past ten years, those who were privileged to hear the orchestra play would readily agree that the MPO is certainly of world-class standard.

Recently, I had the chance to hear the MPO perform when they celebrated their 10th anniversary with a birthday bash of six very appetisingly-priced concerts.

No, I did not go for all six concerts. However, I did go for two of them though. All because they played two of my favourite kinds of music.

The first one was themed "Symphonic Broadway" and the musicals from Broadway filled the air of the DFP. The MPO brought to life the music of the likes of Gershwin, Bernstein, Rodgers, Ellington & Strayhorn.

They showed their versatility in performing the musicals superbly even though they are a classical orchestra. From the soothing oboes and mellow bassoons to the thundering timpanis and clashing cymbals, the orchestral arrangements were simply magnificent.

The highlight had to be " That Doo-Wah Thing" or otherwise known as "It Don't Mean A Thing If It Ain't Got That Swing". That hip-swinging, foot-stomping piece almost brought the house down! If only it was a dance hall...

Two and a half weeks later came THE concert that I was really looking forward to, the Latin Jazz Fiesta. I almost couldn't get tickets as they were sold out before I could get my hands on them. Thankfully, they released the reserved Corporate Suite seats for sale. These premium VIP seats were going for only RM80!!

This time around, the MPO had a guest conductor, the Portuguese-American Jacomo Bairos. But the person everyone was there to see and listen to is none other than the very special guest flutist, the famous Puerto Rican, Nestor Torres.

He played the flute like it was an extension of him. The way he blew the flute, literally blew us away.

The whole atmosphere of the DFP was like that of a Latin Jazz club. Flashing coloured lights (yes, you read that correctly) and people were swaying and gyrating to the rhythmic sounds of the bongos, congas, maraccas, guiros, marimba...

Again, the MPO lived up to their reputation as a world-class orchestra, handling the Latin Jazz style with ease. From the slow tunes to the heart-pounding and breathlessly fast ones, not a note was out of place. Or at least I did not detect any!

Some of these are very familiar songs but they've been given a breath of fresh air. I must say that these were the most awesome arrangements I've ever heard!

For instance, we are quite used to hearing Besame Mucho in a moderate to lively tempo. Mr Torres however, turned it into a slow, orchestral-style arrangement that made the performance a very moving experience. Almost brought a tear to our eyes.

Three top Malaysian jazz musicians were invited to join the MPO for this concert. They are John Thomas on drums, Eric Li on piano and Fly on bass guitar.

The best part of it all was we were seated just above the stage looking down at the strings and percussion section. We could almost read the music scores from where we were. The gallery we were in had only 8 seats. Each gallery section had their own adjoining suite complete with plush sofas and butler service with tea & coffee provided.

However, the strict dress code was a little damper to an otherwise unforgettable evening of mesmerizing music. The people in DFP need to know when to enforce and when to relax the dress code. Wearing a lounge suit to a Latin jazz concert just doesn't make any sense at all.

And guess what? When the MPO stepped onto the stage, they were in colorful Hawaiian floral shirts. Some of the ladies wore spaghetti strap tops. One had a red flower in her hair. There was this French Horn player in shades, yes, dark glasses. So cool. How he managed to read the music is beyond me! From where I was sitting, I could see that the drummer was actually playing barefoot. If only cameras were allowed, I would've had a field day shooting loads of interesting pics!

So, you see how silly we all felt in our lounge suits and long-sleeved batiks!

These have been two of the best concerts I've attended in a long while. Hoping that there will be more great performances like these and affordably-priced too.

Let's hope we do not have to wait another 10 years...

An enjoyable concert

Yes, there's been a lack of postings lately due to time constraints. There are lots of stuff I'd like to blog about but I think that'll have to wait until things cool off a little for me.

Anyway, I was at the Roland organ concert a week ago and thoroughly enjoyed it. Ms Kanako Kumanomido played a mixed repertoire of songs that spanned the Bach era all the way to the modern day anime music... and (almost) everything else in between! There was jazz, big band, latin, the musicals, and of course, Disney movie themes to whet the appetite of the young ones. And she sings too! And all that for free! What a great way to spend a lazy Sunday afternoon. I just love those Roland people.

The organ? Well, the Atelier AT80SL is an amazing piece of instrument that you have to listen to, live. And if you're an organist, you'd definitely want one. The price? Well, like they say... if you have to ask, then you probably can't afford it! :-(

Global vote picks new seven wonders of the world

LISBON, Portugal: Monuments in three Latin American countries were named among the new seven wonders of the world Saturday.

Brazil's Statue of Christ Redeemer, Peru's Machu Picchu, and Mexico's Chichen Itza pyramid were chosen alongside the Great Wall of China, Jordan's Petra, the Colosseum in Rome and India's Taj Mahal.

The sites were selected according to a tally of around 100 million votes cast by people around the world over the Internet and by cell phone text messages, the nonprofit organization that conducted the poll said.

Among the places left out were the Acropolis in Athens, Greece; the Statues of Easter Island, Chile; Cambodia's Angkor; Turkey's Hagia Sophia; and Russia's Kremlin and St. Basil's Cathedral.

Those major attractions were on the shortlist of 21 before the announcement of the results at a ceremony in Lisbon, Portugal.

The Great Pyramids of Giza, the only surviving structures from the original seven wonders of the ancient world, kept their status in addition to the new seven.

The new architectural marvels were presented during a show which included appearances by American actress Hilary Swank, Indian actress Bipasha Basu, and British actor Ben Kingsley, as well as performances by Jennifer Lopez and Jose Carreras.

Macchu Piccu's award was picked up by a Peruvian man in national costume who held the award up to the sky and then bowed to the crowd with his hands clasped, eliciting one of the biggest cheers of the night.

Many in the 50,000-member audience at a soccer stadium jeered when the United States' Statue of Liberty was announced as one of the candidates. Portugal was broadly opposed to the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq.

Swiss adventurer Bertrand Piccard, pilot of the first hot-air balloon to fly nonstop around the world, announced one of the winners and briefly hijacked proceedings when he made an appeal for people to combat climate change and stand up for human rights before being ushered off the stage.

The campaign to pick the seven new wonders was begun in 1999 by Swiss adventurer Bernard Weber. His Switzerland-based foundation, called New7Wonders, received almost 200 nominations from around the world. The list of candidates was narrowed down to 21 by early last year. Voting took place over the past six years, but gathered pace only in recent months.

The organizers conceded there was no foolproof way to prevent people from voting more than once for their favorite. They claimed votes came in from every country in the world.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, or UNESCO, keeps updating its own list of World Heritage Sites, which now totals 851 places.

However, Paris-based UNESCO distanced itself from the seven wonders ballot, saying it reflected only the opinion of those who voted.

Weber aims to encourage cultural diversity by supporting, preserving and restoring monuments, and inspire people to value their heritage.

His foundation said it would use 50 percent of net revenue from the project to fund restoration efforts worldwide. One of them is a mission to rebuild the giant Bamiyan Buddha statue in Afghanistan, blown up in 2000 by the Taliban regime.

Weber said he was starting a new campaign Sunday to choose the new seven natural wonders of the world.

"If you want to save something, you first have to truly appreciate it," he told the crowd.

The original list of seven architectural marvels was collated by a variety of observers of the ancient Mediterranean and the Middle East.

However, the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, the Statue of Zeus at Olympia, the Temple of Artemis at Ephesus, the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus, the Colossus of Rhodes and the Pharos lighthouse off Alexandria in Egypt have all vanished.

"This is probably a conspiracy against Egypt, its civilization and monuments," wrote editorialist Al-Sayed al-Naggar in a leading state-owned daily. Egyptian Culture Minister Farouq Hosni said the project was "absurd" and described its creator, Weber, as a man "concerned primarily with self-promotion". Nagib Amin, an Egyptian expert on World Heritage Sites, has pointed out that "in addition to the commercial aspect, the vote has no scientific basis."

After the complaints from Egypt, the pyramid was given special status and removed from the voting list. From the Web site: "The New7Wonders Foundation designates the Pyramids of Giza — the only remaining of the 7 Ancient Wonders of the World — as an Honorary New7Wonders Candidate, and removed it from the voting."
