Creating a Sitemap

A Google sitemap is an XML file that contains all the links/pages on your site. It's a great way to keep Google abreast of all your pages. It will also help your pages get indexed faster too.

I want to clarify that submitting a sitemap and getting your pages indexed/spidered does not guarantee good rankings. It will just ensure Google is aware of all your pages.

Creating a Sitemap

- If you have a WordPress blog, there are a few SEO plugins that will automatically create and submit a sitemap for you. I use the All in One SEO plugin and it works great and so does Yoast.

- If you have a Blogger blog, your sitemap is already created for you. Just create a Google Webmaster Tools account (login with your Google/Blogger details), look for the Sitemap link and follow the instructions.

- If you have a static website like this one then you'll have to manually create your sitemap or use a sitemap generator.

Don't forget to create a Google Webmaster Tools account first because you will need to manually submit and verify your sitemap the very first time you submit it.

How to Submit Your Sitemap

Create and login to your Google Webmaster Tools account and select the site you want to add the sitemap for.

Now click "Sitemaps" under the Optimization Menu.

Now click the Add/Test Sitemap link.

Next, enter the filename of your sitemap. It may be something like sitemap.xml.

If you are using a WordPress plugin to create and manage your sitemap, go to the plugin settings in the admin panel. You will be able to find the name of the sitemap there.

Finally, submit the sitemap and you are all set! Now Google has an up-to-date listing of all your pages.

You don't have to come back to resubmit your sitemap. Google will automatically recrawl it.

Bing/Yahoo Sitemaps

You will find that Bing and Yahoo will bring you significantly less traffic than Google, but it's still not a bad idea to create a Bing Webmaster Tools account and also submit a sitemap there too.

Mainly websites are hosted in a computer that is called a server. This server has an IP address like 216.239.51.99 –this is the address of google.com. But the problem is for a user like me and you; it will be harder to memorize the IP address of different websites. This is why domain names have been invented to make it easy to use the internet and websites.

So now that you know the basic concept of what a domain is, now let’s go even further. As I said it is a unique address, this means there is no duplicates. Two people cannot register the name at the same time.

The Domain Extensions

In the early days of the internet (in the 1990s) the first 3 versions were the .COM, .NET and .ORG. These are called top level domains or TLD. Dot Com stands for company, communication, community or commercial entity. This is the first domain extension and right now it is most popular having 95.5 Million registered names as of 2011 (source: Internet in numbers)

Dot Net stands for network & internet communication websites but right now only the most technology savvy people use this domain name extension.

Dot Org stands for no profit organization and the least popular among the original trio of domains. However a website in an .org extension receives trust as being a non commercial identity in the eyes of a web visitor.

After the introduction of the 3 domain extensions, there have been more TLDs such as the .BIZ –for business sites; Dot Mobi for mobile websites; and .info for information website. Again the Dot Com ruled because more and more regular users know about the .COM as the internet, without caring about other extensions.

Then there were more extensions for every country and territory, called the Country Code Top Level Domain names or ccTLD. For an example United Kingdom uses .co.uk, while in the United States, they have .us. Network Solutions –another reputed domain name company allows the user to register a domain name for up to 100 years. Well it is not recommended that you register a domain name for that long because who knows what will be the future of the internet.

You are also allowed to transfer your domain name from one registrar to another using your domain pin number.

Before the domain name is about to expire you have to add more years to it by renewing the name. A good practice is to register the web address for longer period (like 2-5 years).

Domain names start with just one letter and it can be upto 67 letters. But a wise thing is to keep the domain name as short and easy to type as possible. Domain names can have letters (A-Z) numbers (0-9) and hyphens (-)

Alltop: This is a list of online blogs in category. It has sections and under the sections you can find blog articles. To submit your blog, first sign up for a free account. Sometimes if you get lucky, one of your blog articles will be featured in your category. This will result in additional flow of visitors.

Bloggers: Is a directory for bloggers. Basically you have to sign up as a blogger and then submit your blog. You have to add their badge in your site to verify your blog. Bloggers has a community of bloggers and it’s a fine way to reach other people who blog and read in the same topic as you do.

Blog naming is a big topic. A lot of people obsess over naming their blog. No doubt about it, blog names are very important. What you call your blog matters.

A bad blog name? Well, it can position you poorly, seem unprofessional, be hard to remember, even be offensive to your target market and readers, and perhaps worse, you may hate it.

These five tips should help you choose an appropriate blog name.

1) Give your blog a reasonable name. Avant-garde names are very popular now, for example, Boing Boing and icanhas cheez burger are extremely popular blogs, but do you want a "strange" name for your blog long term? 4) Get a domain name to match your blog name if you can. You don't want a URL like myblog.typepad.com or myblog.blogspot.com. For example, Seth Godin, the New York Times best selling author, blogs at sethgodin.typepad.com and when I asked himif there was one thing he could do differently if he started blogging today, he had to think a bit, but he said he probably should have used his own domain and put his blog under sethgodin.com.

One good exception is if you use company domain name or a sub-domain for your blog.

5) Your blog doesn't even NEED its own name.

You could just use your own name on the blog. This is a very valid approach when it's you that you're branding and promoting though the blog, as opposed to a product, company, or idea, etc. For example I could start a blog that just said "Ted Demopoulos" in the header, perhaps together with a picture or some graphic.

6) There is no such thing as a "perfect" name for a blog, and if it were perfect today, it probably wouldn't be perfect tomorrow. It's best to pick a great blog name, knowing that there will most likely be compromises in naming your blog, and just get on with it.

7) Relax as you can always change your blog name. Hyper popular blogger Guy Kawasaki has changed his blog name several times with no adverse efforts.

Blog names are important for sure, but don't let choosing a name slow you down. These tips should help you choose a good blog name and get started blogging. You can't have a successful blog unless you start, so just do it.
