Cables Do Matter? Let Me Explain...

I thought I would take you behind the scenes of the recording process. When recording your album you want to have excellent, clear sound. As some of you may know I just graduated as a Recording Engineer and I love recording. I am here to say that cables do matter.

During one of my recording sessions, something not so great was happening. My vocal recordings sounded thin and tinny...Gahhh!! What was happening. I was using a high quality mic and equipment. My voice doesn't sound thin...so what was going on. The only thing that came to mind as the weak link in the chain was to swap the cheap cable. Yes you heard me..."Swap the Cable" Sometimes recording can be like detective work....ahahahahha At times problems will pop up and you have to find the culprit.

I went out and bought some quality thick cables and OOOO Man what a difference. Some people will say they don't notice the difference but I do. My ear seems tuned to hearing off notes and noises etc. The results were really amazing. It didn't really enhance my voice but it sounded more of the way I do in real life. The problem was resistance in the cable.

Think of it like water hose. If you have a water hose that has a something in it partially blocking it in some way you are only going to get some of the water coming out at the other end. This is called resistance. Cables have resistance, some more than others. Especially cheap cables. Resistance in a cable can be caused interference such as radio frequencies, cross talk and electromagnetic interference.

I don't want to bore you all the details but you want to get a cable that is insulated and grounded against this kind of interference so you are not losing most of your data due to resistance in your cable.

Have You Heard??...More Music

I have more music for ya. For those of you who may not have heard these songs as yet that are posted on my website...here they are.

This song is called "Stay" I recorded this in the studio. Recorded, produced and vocals by me.. Rap and Rhymes by my friend Andrew Phillips. How did it all happen you ask? Good question. I was just laying down some beats and some cool lyrics came to mind. Andrew liked it and wanted to drop some rhymes. I recorded both of our vocals and this is the result. I love how it sounds.

Do you like Roberta Flack??....so do I. That's why I did a cover of her song "The first time ever I saw your face". Have a listen. My friend Leo played the piano part as a guide track for my vocals but the result was very sloppy. The beauty of a midi keyboard is the information or data rather that is sent to the computer shows up in your recording software as a visual like this.

I could then move the notes, delete notes, add notes, even lengthen or shorten the amount of time notes are played. So the piano part went from sounding like "Chop Stix"...lol to something beautiful. O how I love Pro Tools and Logic Pro...*sigh*

Noodling on the Guitar

I thought maybe you would like to hear the song writing process...at least for me...lol My friend Chris and I got together to jam and here's what we came up with. He's a talent guitar player. In these 2 songs he would play a little something and then I would sing lyrics that would pop into my head. I could hear and direct the song and the tune using my voice and he would follow me with the guitar.

Writing songs with someone can be super fun. Everything in these 2 songs are completely improvised not rehearsed. Looking forward to finishing up these songs so that you can hear them in their full glory. Enjoy and Happy Friday.

Finally!! The weather was so warm and beautiful today. I swear everyone was out and about. I did a little antique window shopping. I saw one of those retro rotary phones, an old futuristic tube television and so many other cool stuff.

I think I may do some busking on the boardwalk this summer as I did once before. It was sooo much fun...you should come :) Hope you are all having a great day. So tell me..what have you been up to?

It's been a while my friends. So many new and wonderful things have been happening for me. How about you? What's new? How has 2012 and been treating you. I hope you are doing well. Happy belated Valentines Day...I missed you. What have you been up to? How has the new year been treating you? I'm still here and I hope you are too. 2008 You Will Be Missed But Bring On 2009

Happy New Year! Did you have fun last night? Did you ring in the New Year with the Jonas Brothers? lol Well 2008 will be missed but HELLO 2009. Let's make it a year of change. Maybe instead of resoultions we can take steps on our own personal journey and be part of the changes we want to see in the world and in our life. Maybe we can take small steps, make a check list, change our routine, do something different, face some fears, have some fun, challenge ourselves and as we go along enjoy and be sure to stop and smell the roses from time to time. Maybe we can create more, give more, take more time if needed. Maybe we can laugh more, slow down more, love more, share more, feel more, hug more, smile more. Not only will others feel great but you will feel great most of all.

What do you want to see for 2009? I am already seeing the changes I want to see for 2009. Nearing the end of 08 I heard about a dog that saved another dogs life. So I had to have you see this for yourself....I was shocked. I don't think it's a trained dog and even if it was how did it know to wait for the traffic and bring the other dog to safety. I must say we don't give animals the credit they deserve. We are use to believing that dogs don't think and have a very short term memory....I must say something is very different here.

I want to send you off to a great start of 2009...so enjoy firewire celebrations of last night from around the world.

Indonesian children bathe in drums filled with waste water as that is all that's available in their Jakarta slum. Song Writing or Squirrel Watching...Same Thing?

So today I sat down to finish writing the rest of the songs for the Album. It seems every time I try to complete a song a new song pops up...lol. How do I complete a song you ask...well let's see...I must first prep the area to get me in the mood for writing. Make sure the area is clean and organized with my guitar in hand, tuner, lyrics, paper, pen, chord book and mini tape recorder. Then I need to focus on writing lyrics for the verses. I then experiment with what the chorus and bridge will sound like then I write more lyrics to complete the song. I have to discipline my mind during this process because suddenly I'm thirsty or hey Oprah's on or isn't that squirrel outside my window eating that nut really cute. So I'm here to say that yes that squirrel was really cute he really was but I'm giving up squirrel watching next time so I can finish the songs and record them for you to listen to soon. I'll keep you posted.

Hiya, I am just checking in on you to see how you are doing? Did you have a busy week? My week has been good. Hey it's Friday and it's a long weekend so that should make your day. Last week I performed a few of my songs in Toronto....wish you were there....maybe I will get a chance to perform for you soon. Currently I am working on my other songs which I love just as much as much as the other songs I have shared with you. I am also working on getting some photos taken and will be putting together a Myspace but I will post them all here first.

I came across a video called "Jessi in India" Jessi Cruickshank is an MTV Host and Free the Children ambassador, to the city of Udaipur where she explores its culture and learns about the issues affecting the youth in the surrounding tribal communities.
