Maybe it is an aging thing, but whatever it is I don't like it. Either way, we are again just over 30 days away from the Cycle Oregon 2012 route announcement party. I am still trying to determine if I will be eligible to go - there may be... complications for me to pull it off this year schedule wise. I guess the announcement will be the real thing to determine how hard I push for it. I am hopeful...
New resolutions. New goals. Time to dust off the rides and start getting ready to hit the road again...

Given that two months have passed since I last sat on a bike of any kind, I am feeling a bit out of touch. Through CrossFit though, my fitness has remained higher than ever so I do not fear to sit in the recumbent pilot seat... its just the same old "I need to find the time" excuse. Over the next few weeks I have some work to do on the rides, a the last season and epic Cycle Oregon week ride were not too kind to the trike. Loose spokes abound, chain just about at the wear limit, seat pad worn badly... the rehab for the trike itself needs to be done.

Is this a year to sell off the QNT and try for a new upgraded trike? Perhaps. Parting would be hard but there are some enticing trikes out there now for 2012. Sigh... we will have to see how that pans out. I know that I dare not test ride a new trike and risk getting bitten by "the bug" of the new.

For 2012 though some goals needed to be set. I decided to sit down and outline a simple riding goal that will keep me on the road more consistently.

1. At least one decent ride per week. This does not have to be century status or a specific mileage. Just get out and RIDE.

... and...

Well thats it, for now. K.I.S.S. is my thinking on this. Riding should be fun, just more consistent. Since I am not training for anything specific (other than to have fun more) then this should do it!

Ride on!

Evolve Trikes has built what appears to be the niftiest folding trike in the universe. One of the major concerns and comments I get with out current trike stable is, "how do you carry those around?" Evolve Trikes seems to be solving that problem.

Check out the video below of this trike folding in record time and being placed into the back of a SMART CAR! Gimmie, gimmie, gimmie one!!! Sadly this trike is not in production yet, but I am really hoping it makes the leap soon - this one is a must have for a family of trike riders.
Just in time for riding in the Portland fall rain - HA!

New countdown timer up - 128 days until the announcement of the 2012 route! With rumors afloat of "the most climbing ever" it will be interesting to see:

1. If that hold to be true, and
2. How that affects the sellout time

Well, I don't plan on sitting on the laurels. It's hard to believe that this is the last day. Today we a relatively easy cruise with a few short and crazy steep grinds - thrown in as a reminder of what has come before. Cruising into the finish is always hard. On one had it is a relief that its all over. On the other the sadness really starts to set in that until 2012, this is it.
The day everyone was talking about. After all was said and done though, it turned out to be one of the best days of the week. Yes it was slow. But the scenery and serene quality of being out on this day's epic journey was too awesome to deny. The last half of the day was nothing but a great cruise down some incredible downhills with a smooth flow into Riddle.
Mild rollers ruled allowing for an amazing maintenance of speed the entire way. Along the way we rolled along grassy meadows and in between tree covered mountains dotting the sky. The morning started out a bit misty, but that only made the scenery more serene and incredible. And as always, the welcome at the finish line put on by the residents of Powers did not disappoint.

When the scenery is this awesome you simply must stop to soak it all in. If you don't then you really are missing the point.

Speeding along to Powers - I spied with my little eye a fellow trike rider passing by!

Fresh coffee brewed at rest stop # 1 straight off the coffee cycle? Yes!!!!

Scenes from just off the road on Cycle Oregon.

Fresh strawberries, watermelon, cantaloupe, and fruit of all kind greeted riders at the final rest stop. Served with a smile by a ton of amazing volunteers while Jhonny Cash blasted in the background. Awesome. Didn't stop at the last rest stop (only seven miles from camp in Powers) because you were in too much a rush? Ohhhhhhhhhh...

Camp in Powers. Pristine as it gets. If you spy the ideal campsites in the distance you win.

We opted to stay in town and see what Bandon had to offer. We were not disappointed.

What an incredible little town with an amazing boardwalk, art galore, and some of the best seafood around. This is to say nothing of the
Beach in Bandon, which is breathtaking to say the least. Having been to Canon Beach several times I have to say - if you think you have seen awesome then you need to make a trip to Bandon.

Camp in Bandon. Very close to the massage tent, which can be very handy.

Bandon beach = all kinds of epic awesomeness.

Hidden coves and treasures abound at Bandon beach.

This is typically the day where you wonder what the heck you signed up for. Today however, even with a wet wet wet AM of the typical Oregon coast, was an epic ride. After an early camp tear down, we headed out along highway 101. After many a mile of face blasting mist from passing logging trucks, etc, the air cleared a bit and the rest of the day was a roller coaster treat on the way to Bandon.

Stopping for local fare is one of the great treats of Cycle Oregon. When else can you ride, ride, ride and pull off at the Fisherman's Grotto? Well, we decided to sample some seafood in Carleston Oregon for lunch and it did not disappoint.

After lunch we hit the seven devils. These hills lived up. To their reputation - some stiff climbing awaited us! We ticked them off one at a time though until the last devil was conquered.

After a cruise into Bandon, we were greeted with the usual small town welcome. After setting up camp we checked out the town for some dinner and a bit of fudge from the local candy shop. What a place. yes this will be a great place for the layover day.
That's what happens when it's a 90 mile day with a lot of elevation gain and you linger too long at the rest stops. And have to deal with flats. And stop a lot to take pictures...

Still it was a great day. Killer downhills. Steady climbs. The road wound through. The forest for nearly the entire time. At one point we were quite alone on the road and we simply stopped riding to listen to...nothing. Complete silence. Simply a day that, if not for being on Cycle Oregon, we would never have had. Awesome.

Flying through the trees on a trike - an experience that has to be had to be appreciated.

The heat ramped up throughout the day to around 90 degrees! Luckily we were done with the ride by then - chilling at the beer garden. Tomorrow will be a long day, but the route promises some fast descents, amazing roads, and a great trip through the forest to Reedsport.

A few great downhills today netted some perfect HD video - tune in after the ride once the week trip video is complete! In the meantime, here are a few shots from today. Time to shower up and have another beer!

OK folks,

Has everyone done the following? They come in order and 'tis required to "be ready" for CO:

Five Days to Cycle Oregon:

1. Set up tent at least 4 times in living room - you know - to make sure all the poles are there, etc.
2. Pack duffel.
3. Unpack duffel.
4. Repack duffel.
5. Unpack duffel because you forgot to pack "___" in the big ziplock and that ziplock was at the bottom.
6. Repack duffel.

Four Days to Cycle Oregon:

7. Checked weather forecast.
8. After checking weather forecast subsequently unpack duffel.
9. Repack duffel with items swapped out based on weather forecast.
10. Weigh duffel.
11. Take a HUGE sigh of relief that the duffle is packed and ready to go.
12. Realize suddenly that the tent is still set up in the living room.
13. Unpack duffel.
14. Take down tent.
15. Repack duffel.

Three Days to Cycle Oregon:

16. Have spouse mention, "Hey did you remember to pack your ______?"
17. Look everywhere for "______" mentioned by spouse.
18. Unpack duffel.
19. Realize that "______" is already in duffel, at the bottom.
20. Repack duffel.
21. Make determination that if it is not in the duffel by now, you can buy it from the Bike Gallery or Cycle Oregon retail tent and all is FINALLY good.
22. Crack open a beer to celebrate that the packing is now DONE.

Two Days to Cycle Oregon:

23. Look for parking pass in house.
24. Scour car for parking pass.
25. Unpack duffel.
26. Find parking pass at bottom of duffel.
27. Repack duffel.
28. Put parking pass in glovebox.

Late Night - Final Day to Cycle Oregon:

29. Check to make sure parking pass is still in glovebox.
30. Move duffle and all related gear to "pole position" by the front door.
31. Move cleaned and ready bike to the front door - ready to go.
32. Look for helmet.
33. Look everywhere for helmet.
34. Unpack everything in duffel.
35. Look up to see helmet sitting on kitchen counter.
36. Swipe helmet off counter into the duffel.
37. Repack everything back into the duffel.

Final Morning - Leaving for Cycle Oregon:

37. Scour house for anything forgotten. Find nothing. (Yeah!)
38. Move gear outside on porch.
39. Enlist help of family to get gear loaded.
40. Load bike on rack.
41. Load duffel in car.
42. Say goodbyes to everyone.
43. Reach for keys in pocket - just as you remember setting them in your helmet the night before...

It is finally here. The home stretch. Less than a full week before leaving for Cycle Oregon. It's all about the packing and monitoring the weather from here on out. Oh, and the excited sleepless nights. And also checking for the fifth and sixth time that the parking pass is still in the glovebox. Might have to set the tent up in the living room, just in case. OK, so the last one is a stretch (looks over at bag packed with camping gear...)

Not sure what it is, but not too many trips elicit a response like going on a week long Cycle Oregon. Sure other vacations are exciting, but something about a supported bike tour like CO is just different. It's going to be fun. All vacations (hopefully) fit that bill, of course. But Cycle Oregon is going to be fun AND hard. Fun, hard, AND sweaty. Fun, hard, sweaty, AND sad. Whole ranges of emotions come with the territory. One day you are zooming along in the perfect weather, the next you are in a downpour of your life wondering if you will EVER make it to camp and wondering if your poor bag is sitting in a mud pool. Yes, it can happen. There will be the day a climb comes and you wonder halfway up - if you should just ditch it off to the side, pull some branches or grass over yourself and wait for the wildlife to carry you away. Luckily these things do not happen often so life should err to the "fun" side 90% of the trip. But to know those moments will come and still be excited to go? That is a true testament to the power of goodness that comes from experiencing this trip.

This video below presented by OPB (Oregon Public Broadcasting) is a few years old now, but it covers it quite well. Given the hard economic times, it feels very very good to be part of CO this year bringing at least a bit of economic spark to the towns that play host.

Highly recommend taking it in. Even better, gear up for 2012 and be prepared to sign up. This years ride has not even started and I am itching for February already!

Two weeks for any last bit of training and one week of packing and pacing. 19 days before heading to Sutherlin. 9 days left before the "10 day forecast" can be checked and re-checked ad nauseam.

Cram it in!!!!!

Hopefully you have made that appointment to have your bike serviced (unless you do it yourself) and have ordered anything you need online to ensure you get it. It looks like a few of the LBS in Portland have begun to put out some of the cold weather gear, so if you need those replacement arm or leg warmers - there are probably some better choices at the local shops than a month ago.

Tick-tock!!

Alas - Cycle Oregon 2011 is now 31 days away. The final sprint is now ON!

This last month you may find yourself doing a lot of frothy pacing - just eagerly awaiting the time to arrive! These last thirty days will travel quickly, so it is time - today - to put together the "must do this month" list so that come the morning of September 10th, all there will be to do is toss your bag into the car, strap the ride to the roof, hit the local coffee place for a jolt, and get thyself to Sutherlin STAT.

Over the years my list has evolved a bit, but here are 10 critical items that need attention in the next 30 days (some sooner than others):

1. Preview the weather

Yes, I realize predicting this a month out is near impossible around here, but you can take a look at the years past for a sense of what to expect. Look for patterns of weather in each town around the time the ride takes place. Use this information to narrow down/expand your packing/shopping list.

2. Make a shopping list and get 'er done

Need a new duffle? Need to pick up a wool jersey? New arm warmers? Leg warmers? Make a list now and start shopping. Buying online? Do it soon to ensure the gear you need arrives on time and you have a chance to exchange if needed.

3. Go over your ride of choice for mechanical issues

If you do your own maintenance, now is time for the 100% go-over. Fine tooth comb your steed. Check the tires for embedded glass, etc that can cause a flat. Need new tires? Get 'em now. Mechanically check everything. Check headset tension, pedals, fasteners, cables, etc. Better to do it now than have something fall out and cause a failure on day 1. Clean and lube your chain. If you don't do your own bike maintenance, get your bike to the local shop for a full tune ASAP as they can be busy this time of year.

4. Replace your patch kit(s)

If your patch kit is old, get a new one for the week - just in case.

5. Do a "test pack" of your gear

Bought a new duffle? New tent? Sleeping pads, etc? Make sure it will all fit in your duffle. Get together all the gear you want to take and pack it. Still not sure what to bring? Cycle Oregon has a great packing list you can print out. Edit it as you see fit for your needs. Weigh your bag to make sure you are not over the 65lb limit.

6. Make your duffle unique

There will be hundreds and hundreds of duffle bags in camp each day that all look (or are) the exact same. Yes, you will have your rider number tag on the end of it - but so will everyone else. A better way to play the daily "I spy with my little eye" duffle hunting game is to attach something colorful and/or garish on the outside handles like ribbon, duct tape, etc. Have a ridiculous looking tie you will never ever wear? Cut it in half and tie one section each to the ends of your duffle in tight knots.

7. Visit the bank

In camp there will be locals selling things. There will be handy local kids willing to carry your bag for a tip (Sherpas). The beer garden. Pizza. Local eateries, shops, and tours. Smoothies. Etc etc. Bring some cash in small bills for these things. Particularly for the sherpas - tip well. They pool tips for things like school equipment, etc. Plus getting up a 6AM to haul many 60 lb bags among a lycra clad crowd deserves a handful of bucks!

8. Assess your training

Time to face the mirror about your fitness. Are you there yet? Time is just about out. You do not want to do a lot of heavy riding and tearing up your legs the week before the ride. That is the rest week. Your fitness is not just about "I rode hundreds of miles" on a bike. Anyone can ride along for a lot of miles. What about other training you have (or planned on being) engaged in? If you are "there" with your fitness, great - you will do fine. If you are not - well believe it or not you will do fine too. Maybe not as "fast" but hey - this is vacation and not a race. If you feel the need to step it up a notch - you have three weeks left. Don't hurt yourself in the final week.

9. Stock up on spare tubes and maybe a spare tire

Run a special tire size other than 700c? Get a spare and bring it in your duffle. If you are riding ISO 349 or 406 or 650c size tires - or anything other than the "typical roadie" size - spares will probably NOT be available to you on the ride should you need one. Ditto that for tubes. Recumbent riders - unless it is a 700c wheel equipped recumbent you are likely ON YOUR OWN for spare tubes and a tire should the need arise. Plan accordingly.

10. Schedule your massage

A real treat while on Cycle Oregon - getting a massage. You may not know, but you need to schedule this NOW if you want a massage. If you think you can do it once you arrive in camp - think again. Take a look at the maps and decide what days you really might want the luxury that is a Cycle Oregon massage - then go here and send a few emails to set up a time. You can always show up and maybe someone will have cancelled or you can get in for a no-show... but it's a gamble.

Well, those 10 cover the main ones. Here's to counting down the days!

Decided to put a word here for anyone looking at finalizing a tent choice for the week ride. I feel we have now landed on what could be the most amazing tent we have ever seen.

One thing I have learned on all my CO trips to date: the choice of home away from home is VERY important to your overall enjoyment.

Over the weekend ride, we used a new Coleman 6 man tent - the Naugatuck 6 - and we were somewhat disappointed for many reasons, even though it is a nice tent. But it just did not suit the needs for our family. So it went on Craigslist as soon as it had dried out and the search for the ultimate week long Cycle Oregon tent resumed.

Today in the living room after making plenty of space I did a test setup of our new Marmot Limestone 6. We decided to buy this one after seeing the video at the link. If you are looking for a tent - this is the one in my opinion. It could be the last tent you ever buy. This thing is HUGE due to the design of the dome with vertical walls provided via "brow poles" that sit up top. There are near 3 foot vestibules on each end. This is indeed a first class tent that packs to a reasonable size. It is a Cycle Oregon castle!

There are several words that can easily describe this tent: Simple setup. Massive. Tall. Full fly. Ventilation. Storage. It seems the Marmot folks have thought of everything. Another bonus is that it is a freestanding design that goes up fast - even in the confines of the living room it went up in less than 10 minutes. Given another 5 for fly attachment and staking this tent could be up in 10-15 minutes tops without even rushing. Hot.

We are very excited to give this a shot here in September. Yes it seems odd to post a tent review before its actual use outdoors - but having camped for several years and sampled many tents this one takes first prize and I am sure it will fare well.

Seven (7) flats on the Greenspeed Scorcher tires was more than I could bear. The Marathons went on without hassle (no tool install - YES!) and looks pretty darned good. Reflective stripes on the sidewalls = bonus.

Earlier this month I took the opportunity to get a new skill by taking a wheel building class through Sugar Wheel Works. Building wheels has been the holy grail of skills for me in the cycling world - I just love wheels and find the entire process fascinating.

These are replacements for the single wall stock rims on the B1 (stocks will serve as back up set) and I decided to go with:

Aeroheat 406 rims
SRAM X7 hubs
Black straight gauge spokes
Blue anodized nipples

Instructing the class was wheel builder extraordinaire Jude Kirstein. What a great class! They are small and it is like having a personal 1 on 1 expert session. It cannot get better than that. I have now had some time to roll around on the wheels and have to say - riding around on wheels that you have built yourself is an interesting feeling. I am not sure any other cycling "cycling mechanic" activity has been as satisfying. It's one thing to make a repair - or even build up a bike from a frame, but riding on personally built wheels is really cool. The SRAM X7 rear hub is near silent, which is a very very nice thing to have on a recumbent and when you would rather enjoy the sounds of nature versus the clacking of the hub while coasting. In fact, I am thinking strongly about riding this rear wheel on the QNT for Cycle Oregon as it is soooooo quiet!

The build process was not near as scary as I thought - quite methodical and step by step really. Follow the process. Tweak it down to the fine detail at the end. Don't skip steps or cut corners. Excellent. It was a lot of fun and the tedious portions at the end of the truing process are the best - you can feel the wheel getting dialed to perfection!

Here are some shots of the process and the finished wheels. Anyone looking to gain a new skill should check out the classes offered at Sugar Wheel Works!
Not near as many pictures on this ride, but that was particularly hard to do on Sunday with all the drenching rain. Captured the essence of the trip though. Enjoy!
Man it was a strange one. A bit of the good weather, but the second day was as wet as I have ever been while riding. Here at home the drying out of gear continues...

At the final water stop the inside of my raincoat sleeves were full of water - ugh! Knock on wood but I am really really hoping for some more mild weather for the week ride. I realize it is on the coast so all bets are off, but wetness like that is hard to deal with for more than a single day.

The calendar as of today puts the week ride 52 days away. The time is now going to hit warp speed and September will be here before the blink of the eye. In the meantime, here are a few images from the last weekend. Also pleased worth the mount I had rigged up for the GoPro camera. It should prove to be very useful on the week ride for some great downhill footage.
A bit of rain in the AM but then it cleared up to a perfect partly cloudy day!

Had plenty of time to practice tire changes this time around with three flats! Yikes. Heard from course support that there were a lot of flats on this route.
