Sustainable shopping isn't always easy. In fact, it can be decidedly difficult. With fast fashion brands spending billions of pounds every year to entice us with their affordable clothes, quick trends and 'limited time' offers, staying on the sustainability straight-and-narrow can be a challenge. But it's one worth stepping up to.

The first thing to accept is that making the switch to slow fashion is a process. You might not get it right every time, and you might fall off the wagon in spectacular style more than once. But who can expect anything less from us mere mortals when our internet searches chase us around the internet with the persistence of a wasp? Have faith though. Fast fashion will only sting if you let it. You're in control of this one.

One thing I've found really effective when it comes to resisting the pull of a transient trend or an ASOS spree is to head to Depop instead. Not only is Depop equally as fun to scroll, but it offers ten times the satisfaction when you find a piece you love. Not only this, but buying items second hand is far better for the planet than supporting big brands with dubious ethics and even more dubious sustainability credentials. The best way to make a statement against the bad practices we know are rife in the fashion industry is to simply say no to brands who are not doing enough.

I appreciate that Depop's wealth of sellers can be a little overwhelming at first glance. So to get you started on your journey to second hand enlightenment, here are a few of my favourite accounts. Next time you're tempted to cop a new outfit from a fast fashion brand for that party or event, check out some of these sellers instead. You might find something you love that suits your sense of style and has its own little history. You definitely won't find someone next to you on the tube the following week wearing the exact same thing.

I Thought I Was A City Girl - Until Living in Devon for Lockdown

I never used to understand why people would choose to live in the countryside. I didn’t exactly grow up in a metropolis, but living just past London’s green belt with a 20-minute direct train to King’s Cross made the city feel like home. Everything I needed – or thought I needed – was just within reach. Shops? Check. Jobs? Check. Watering holes? Triple check.

I couldn’t fathom a life without stuffy tubes to everywhere, dirt in my pores and countless options for dinner and drinks. Not to mention the friends in every corner: familiar little pins on the map of my world. Beaches and rolling hills were the stuff of holidays only, not the backdrop of a real and prosperous life. And anyway, what would I do for work if not commuting an hour each way to sit in an office?

As I squeezed through a packed pub on a Friday night like the last dregs of toothpaste in the tube, I’d look around smugly and think ‘Who wouldn’t want this? Everyone is here!’ as a stray elbow sent half my pint onto my shoes. My friends, standing sparely in the corner, would be shouting themselves hoarse above the din, looking happy but not quite relaxed. With coats over forearms and bags in hand, they remained alert and ready to pounce should an elusive table make itself free. This was what I knew and loved.

When COVID hit the UK with full force, I was with my boyfriend in his family home in Devon. He’d recently quit his job in London to move back home for a few weeks, as we were set to move to Singapore at the end of March. But with international travel firmly cancelled and our Singapore dreams dramatically dashed, I’d gone down to join him on the quiet South Coast so we could wallow in our shared self-pity.

Space was limited at his house, so we made plans to rent a cottage from a friend just down the road. I felt grateful to be somewhere so beautiful, but also cast adrift, with no map and definitely no anchor. We’d been days from flying to our new life in the world’s most thoroughly modern city, but now found ourselves in the depths of Devon – and I only had enough clean knickers to last a week.

More memorably, I was frightened. The unpredictable and as-yet unknown coronavirus seemed to lurk on every surface and in every public space. Like much of the world I'd never felt so worried for my friends and family, nor so distant and unsettled. Lockdown was happening, people were dying, and I soon couldn’t think of anywhere I’d least like to be than halfway across the world, quarantined and jobless in a foreign city. I felt grateful, then, for the stroke of good fortune that had brought me to Devon in the nick of time. Friends in gardenless London flats were already climbing the walls. You could see the beach from ours.

We couldn’t go far but our daily walks along the coast were stunning and refreshing. The people were lovely too, nodding and saying hello from a safe distance wherever we met them. It helped that my boyfriend knew almost everyone in sight, having grown up just a few minutes down the road. His easy familiarity with people and place – and acute radar for anyone who ‘clearly wasn’t from around here’ – was comforting. This was a community where everyone knew everyone else and people felt safe, at a time when the world seemed anything but. I, in turn, began to relax.

I was hardly a local myself, but quickly grew accustomed to coastal life. I’ve always adored the sea, but never imagined it could become as familiar and omnipresent a part of my day as my local train station. Life became a pattern of working from home, walks, runs and dinners on the patio, the salty sea air filling my lungs and slowly stealing my heart.

This village I’d visited just twice before soon started to feel like home. I’d buy essentials from the local shop and chat to its friendly keeper about the weather and the rule-bending second homeowners (never mind that I'm a tourist myself). I’d take my coffee to the beach in the morning and drink it on the sand, listening to the waves gently lap against the shore. We’d walk a quick but beautiful 1.5km loop around the headland in the evening just as the sun was setting, watching the new born lambs play then scatter as we approached.

When lockdown restrictions eased we made even better use of our surroundings. We'd take the paddle boards down to the sea to escape and explore the rugged coast. We'd pack a backpack and stop at secluded beaches to eat precariously transported picnics. We'd play bat and ball for hours on end and go for early morning swims. Not a packed pub, sweaty tube or sticky floor in sight.

I’ve noticed myself gradually begin to unwind over these weeks, a slow but sure unfurling of mental and physical tension. Here by the coast, where space is ample and villages small, the anonymous veil of London is lifted. I was noticed at first, then recognised, and am now spoken to daily by locals and neighbours. Imagine! An unsolicited approach from somebody you've never met!

At first I found the openness of strangers unsettling, but now I see the value in letting down your guard and lacking guile. The friendliness of others has forced me slowly outwards, where I suddenly have a brilliant view of all that I have missed whilst nursing my cold little London shell. I’ve made connections, chatted without second guessing my every word and started to realise what the world can offer when you have the space to stop and look.

It’s funny how the life you lead can leave you blinkered to the possibilities that lie just beyond your frame of reference. I already knew I loved Devon, but having only visited for the odd weekend I’d never envisaged a life here. Or at least, not one for myself. I thought I thrived in the busy city with its never-ending possibilities, but I think I just liked having somewhere to hide. Nearly three months into lockdown and we’re still here, with physical and mental space and a thirty second walk to a beach more beautiful than many I’ve seen abroad. I’m all for it.

Living here these past few weeks I’ve enjoyed the sort of break and space that I was seeking from Singapore. I’ve lived by the coast and breathed clean air and felt the sun on my skin. I’m all too aware of how lucky we’ve been, when so many people across the world have lost loved ones, lost jobs, lost businesses and struggled to make ends meet due to the indiscriminating force of the pandemic. But the world works in mysterious ways and for all the horror, the heartache and the loss, we swapped Singapore for England’s South Coast and gained something that cannot be taken: unforgettable memories of three peaceful months in paradise.

We’ll return to London when all this is over as our jobs and routines demand, but who knows? Perhaps one day we’ll be back – and for good. I miss my friends and the hustle and bustle – hell I even miss the office – but my perspective has definitely changed. I'll never forget this time and this place; or the crucial lesson that relentless busyness isn't always best.

I realise now that this isn’t the middle of nowhere after all. It’s right here. And what a wonderful place to be.

I love a good tan all year round, and Tan-Luxe The Face is without a doubt the best way to get a glow without streaky mitts, messy sprays or foams that aren't really primed to go on your face. A few drops of this in your moisturiser in the morning or at night and you'll have the perfect natural glow, and can probably opt for lighter makeup as a result. I'd love to trial the body version, but it is quite expensive... Nevertheless, a total game changer and well worth the money!

I'm not one for thick foundation as it clogs up my pores and causes break outs. Instead, I prefer to opt for light and buildable tinted moisturisers; and Charlotte Tilbury's Healthy Glow is a firm favourite. It's still a little on the heavy side, so I mix some of the product with my usual daily moisturiser as soon as I've washed my face for a lighter finish and seamless application. The product comes out white, but once applied blends to match your natural skin tone with a little added glow. It lasts all day and has a natural, healthy finish.

Brows: Anastasia DipBrow Pomade

Easy to apply and impossible to smudge, the Anastasia DipBrow is the most durable brow product I've ever used, making it an absolute winner if you're looking to give your brows that extra oomph. So this is ideal if you want full brows that will last for hours, even through a sweaty hour at the gym.

I switch up my moisturiser depending on how my face is feeling each day, but the Effaclar Duo is a constant. It doesn't do a great job at moisturising on its own (it's more of a serum) but it does an incredible job of keeping spots and redness at bay. As soon as I get a breakout I use this morning and night and it gets my skin back on track. How To Spend A Weekend In Salcombe

The British seaside is great: there's no doubt about it. Fresh sea air and ice creams and pasties and cute puppies and happy Brits aplenty. But I must admit, there's something about the seaside on a grey winter's day - when there are just a handful of people around and hardly a holidaymaker in sight - that feels extra special and peaceful.

My boyfriend grew up in South Devon, so we're lucky enough to spend lots of time by this beautiful stretch of coast. In the winter the waves crash noisily against the cliffs and the sea looks icy and uninviting. I find the drama and hostility of the seaside in the winter truly invigorating.

Whatever the season, this is fast becoming one of my favourite parts of the world. If you're considering visiting Salcombe and Devon's South Coast any time soon, here are a few things I highly recommend you put on your 'to do' list. Maybe I'll see you down there!

North Sands, Salcombe

1. Go for a stroll or a paddle board on North Sands

North Sands is Salcombe's prettiest beach. In the summer it's always packed with tourists, so I'd recommend visiting out of season if you want to experience it when there's peace and quiet. I wouldn't suggest paddle boarding in the winter, but if you're heading to Salcombe in the spring or summer this is a nice place to do it. The sea is relatively still and there are some lovely views along the coast line when you get past the outcrop of rocks.

2. Have a mooch around Salcombe's shops

A trip to Salcombe wouldn't be complete without a stroll down the main thoroughfare and a mooch around the shops. There are lots of nice independents as well as a couple of chains (the likes of Fat Face and Joules): more than enough to wile away a couple of hours.

3. Try a pasty from The Bake House

The Bake House sell the best pasties in Salcombe without a shadow of a doubt. I love the cheese and onion one, my boyfriend is a fan of the beef. On a busy weekend you should get down there early as sometimes they do sell out! But whatever you do, don't go home without trying one! The cheese straws are pretty great, too.

4. Visit The Winking Prawn

The Winking Prawn is a characterful little cafe / restaurant on North Sands. You can sit outdoors in the summer or indoors if it's chilly. They have a huge menu featuring lots of fresh fish and locally caught crab. It's a lovely little place for lunch or a coffee. The crab baguette is my fave.

5. Cosy up with soup and scones at Sailor V

Another recent discovery of ours was Sailor V, which is incredibly cosy and welcoming with a great menu, too. If you're looking for somewhere in Salcombe to sit with a book and cuppa for an hour or two, this is your haven. I'd also highly recommend the scones.

6. Head to Bantham for a beautiful beach stroll

Bantham is just twenty minutes' drive from Salcombe, and is home to a huge stretch of beach that's great for a walk and some salty sea air. It's dog friendly too, and a great place to let the doggos run free. If the weather is good, take a picnic (and your surfboard if that's your thing) and make an afternoon of it.

7. Take a day trip to Dartmouth and walk to the Castle and Sugar Cove

Dartmouth is a little further afield - around 45 minutes in the car from Salcombe - but if you're in South Devon for a long weekend and fancy a change of scene, Dartmouth can make for a pleasant day trip. It's a little bigger than Salcombe with lots of nice shops, cafes and restaurants to pop your head into. You can also do a lovely short walk from the centre of town along the coast to Dartmouth Castle (English Heritage) and Sugar Cove, where you can grab a coffee or a hot choc before strolling back.

8. Visit Kingsbridge for tapas at The Old Bakery

Kingsbridge is another lovely tourist hub nearby Salcombe, home to great pubs and a pretty stretch of estuary. If you fancy heading somewhere different for a tasty meal, look no further than The Old Bakery. It's a beautiful old building with wooden beams and a cosy, romantic feel in the centre of Kingsbridge. The tapas are to die for and the staff are lovely. Book ahead as the restaurant is only tiny. You don't want to risk being disappointed.

9. Explore Dartmoor National Park

Last but not least, one of my favourite parts about this part of the country is the sprawling and dramatic moors of Dartmoor. It's very Great Expectations. If you have time and the weather isn't too wet, head to the moors for a drive, a walk and a climb (clambering up the tors is a lot of fun). You might be lucky enough to spot some wild ponies, too.

6 Books That Will Help You Fall Back In Love With Reading

Reading has always been something I've loved; but when I graduated from uni in 2017, it took me ages to get back into reading for pleasure. I was so used to reading tricky, heavy, knotty books, and analysing every word on the page, that reading for reading's sake felt impossible.

If you too have fallen out of love with reading, the below six books could be your saving grace. They reminded me that truly great reads don't have to be tricky and deep, highly literary, or well worn classics. They need only be thoughtful and well written: and a great story helps.

Here are six stellar books that will help you fall back in love with reading if you're struggling to get into the groove again. I'd highly recommend you give them a go!

1. Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty

If you're after a serious page-turner, Big Little Lies is your book. Liane Moriarty writes suspenseful fiction in such a clever way that it doesn't feel dumbed down, overly dramatic or in any way predictable. As soon as I started reading this I was hooked, and couldn't put it down until the last page was turned. I love how she compiles a story in episodes from various characters' perspectives. If you want something quick and easy to read, yet incredibly compelling and well-written, give Big Little Lies a go.

2. Educated by Tara Westover

After I'd finished Educated I found it incredibly hard to find something quite so fascinating and original to read next. In it, Tara relays what it was like growing up in Utah in a fiercely Mormon family, and coming to realize that the worldview passed down to her might not be as accurate as she'd been led to believe. Her stories are often shocking and inconceivable, as at such a young age she was exposed to immense danger and horrific abuse. You can't help but feel her pain as she's forced to make incredibly difficult choices. Educated is easily one the best things I've read all year, and is a testament to the resilience and strength of human beings; as well as our utter fallibility. I'm already looking forward to reading it again.

3. Normal People by Sally Rooney

Normal People is another really easy read, that has you rooting for the two protagonists from the very first page. Sally Rooney writes incredibly well, with loaded sentences that leave plenty of gaps for the reader to fill. I like that you can take this book at face value, or dig a little deeper into what's implied and what's left unsaid. Her characters are incredibly relatable, yet incredibly complex, making this a refreshing read that stirs complicated emotions as Sally slowly reveals her character's issues and flaws. If you enjoy this, you should definitely try her debut hit Conversations with Friends.

4. The Tattooist of Auschwitz by Heather Morris

This book tells the true story of Lale Sokolov: a Slovakian Jew who was taken to Auschwitz-Birkenau near the beginning of the Second World War, and tasked with tattooing his fellow prisoners when they arrived. Lale fell in love one of the inmates, and it's against one of the darkest backdrops imaginable that their uplifting tale is told. Lale's story is unforgettable, and shows humanity at its very best and its very worst. The whole book is a lesson in beautiful storytelling, and is a captivating read.

5. The Wrong Knickers by Bryony Gordon

If you enjoyed Dolly Alderton's 'Everything I Know About Love', you really need to read this. Bryony Gordon's first book is hilariously funny and incredibly honest, as she talks about finding her feet in her twenties, and the trauma, hilarity, chaos and connection that ensued. The book's general air of comedy doesn't take away from the seriousness of some of its subject matter. She writes openly about her struggles with depression, alcohol and drugs. But for anyone riding the roller coaster that is being a twenty-something in a big city - juggling life, friends, relationships and fledgling careers - this is an absolute must-read.

6. Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

Americanah charts the journey of a young Nigerian woman named Ifemelu, who immigrates to the United States to attend university. At its core the book is a love story; but it also explores Ifemelu's experience of America as a non-American black woman, the commodification of race in America, the vacuousness of the American Dream, and the emotional and psychological fall-out of her quest to escape the 'choicelessness' of Lagos. This is an incredibly important book that completely changed the way I thought about race, and is one that everybody needs to read in their lifetime.

8 Sustainable Fashion Brands That Are Worth The Investment

It's no secret that the fashion industry is in need of a change up. Not only is the production of clothing extremely water-intensive, but it's also responsible for 1,715 million tones of CO2 emissions (and this is expected to increase 63% by 2030). That's a lot of CO2.

The good thing is: all is not lost and it's completely within our power to change the way we shop. Best for Bags That Won't Break Us: Greater Goods

Greater Goods is a London based design project dedicated to sustainability and upcycling. They use reclaimed materials to show the importance of recycling in the current climate. From practical totes made from damaged North Face jackets, to bottle bags made from Gore-Tex offcuts, Greater Goods is making upcycling and recycling as cool as it can get.

Best for Sustainable Statement Pieces: House of Sunny

House of Sunny is an independent label founded by Sunny Williams in 2011, which produces small sustainable runs of killer collections, acting against fast fashion. Producing two seasonal collections a year sets the design team at a slower pace, allowing them to research and source sustainable fabrics and manufacturing methods.

The team are also making an effort to reduce waste by using leftover materials and garment waste to create accessories, care labels and swing tags. House of Sunny miraculously delivers style, quality and sustainability, without compromising on affordability. If you're looking to make a sustainable statement, you need look no further. Best for Do-Good Denim: E.L.V. Denim

E.L.V. Denim is an innovative zero-waste brand, taking stocks of discarded denim that would otherwise be destined for landfill, and transforming them into fresh pairs of jeans. The entire collection is designed and manufactured in East London, minimising the brand's waste, water and energy footprints. The straight leg style, with its high waist and contrast washes, is super sustainable and super flattering.

Best for Guilt Free Outerwear: Lindex

Lindex is a big European chain with over 480 stores (including in both London Westfields) although I hadn't heard of it until just recently. They're committed to sustainability, with 96% of their cotton coming from sustainable sources and 16 million PET bottles recycled into polyester for their pieces last year.

They're dedicated to having 80% of their garments made from recycled materials by 2020, which will be no mean feat. I'm a big fan of their outerwear: it's affordable, functional and has sustainable credentials, which is more than can be said for the majority of our big high street players.

Why I Rid My Instagram of Influencers - And Maybe You Should Too

The influencer marketing industry is on track to be worth up to $15 billion by 2022 (up from as much as $8 billion in 2019) according to Business Insider Intelligence. 76% of brands predominantly tap up Instagram for influencer campaigns, compared with Facebook (46%) and YouTube (36%). So every time we scroll through Instagram, nearly 4 in 5 brands are vying for our attention, and have paid big money for it. Tired of the relentless sell, I recently unfollowed almost every influencer on my feed. It may have been the best thing I've done all year; and I'd recommend you give it a go.

My Insta-fatigue hit its peak over the summer, when I realised I was spending too much time scrolling through photos of models and influencers with lives and wardrobes that were unattainable. Whilst commuting to a full time job (and feeling guilty for snoozing my 6am alarm to sleep instead of gym) I'd waste precious free minutes looking at photos of beautiful people I don't even know (most of whom were at the damn gym). It was making me feel worse about myself, even if I didn't realise it right away.

I also found that Instagram was costing me money. Almost every time I went on there I felt compelled to buy something: one influencer's necklace, another's trainers, a really cute dress from a well-targeted ad. Even if I didn't buy the stuff I was seeing there and then, I often started to think that certain items were things I really needed, and would add things I couldn’t afford to baskets or wishlists. I could probably track a solid 70% of my fashion purchases over the last year back to something I saw on Instagram - maybe even more. Losing time and money and seemingly all sense of reason to a damn app is not cool.

I know I'm not the only one. Over 57% of millennials admit to making unplanned purchases due to things they've seen on social media, and 49% say social media has influenced them to spend money on experiences like holidays and meals out. Numerous studies have also evidenced the negative impact social media has on mental health and body image; with Instagram pipped as one of the worst culprits. Despite this, Instagram recently revealed that the average user under the age of 25 spends over 32 minutes on the app every day, which equates to almost four hours a week. Imagine what we could achieve with this time?!

That’s why last month, I decided to have a total Instagram overhaul. I unfollowed every fast fashion brand whose cheap clothes and bad ethics I didn't want in my peripheral vision. I unfollowed every model or influencer whose digital currency was narcissism and consumerism rather than positivity and empowerment. I kept my friends, a few celebs and influencers whose style or values I admire, and the brands I respect. But I culled the rest and cut my feed by around 150.

It felt great. At first I thought I might miss knowing what Kim, Kylie and Sofia Richie were up to on their yachts. But as it turns out, as soon as someone’s off your feed they're off your radar, and you never think about those people or how they look or where they are. It's refreshing.

I totally understand the value of Instagram, and that for many it has been a vehicle for hugely successful careers and unprecedented opportunities. I also know that lots of people can check out Instagram before cracking on with their day unscathed. I know not everyone has the tendency to compare themselves to others, and that not every influencer is bad news. Far from it: there are some incredibly inspiring people out there spreading great messages and sharing great content online. But I do think there's huge value in assessing what you're looking at on your feed, and thinking about how it's making you feel, and whether you want to be spending upwards of half an hour every day looking at it. Because that's a lot of time to be focusing on things that might not be adding that much value to your life on the daily; and could in fact be having a negative impact (when you stop to think about it).

After the cull I started following other types of accounts. Illustrators whose work I liked, businesswomen and start-up founders who I find truly inspiring, hilarious women like Celeste Barber whose posts make me cry with laughter, accounts that share adorable photos of puppies, and sustainable brands and influencers who are making a positive difference.

I feel a lot happier now. This is down to a whole smorgasbord of things, but I'm sure my Instagram overhaul has something to do with it. People say you should surround yourself with friends who love you for you, support you, make you chuckle and make you feel great about your life. We should view our social media platforms in the same way. The accounts and people you follow, who you're spending so much time with every day: do they make you laugh out loud? Do they make you feel good about yourself? Or do they make you feel not good enough? If your answer is the latter, you know what to do. One little button can change it all.

How To Spend a Weekend in Prague

Just recently, my boyfriend and I spent a long weekend in Prague to celebrate his birthday: and boy did we fall in love (with the city). Not only was it the perfect time of year to visit - with the leaves just on the turn and the air crisp and fresh - but the city itself has everything you could ask for during a relaxing long weekend. This was easily one of the best weekends I've had all year.

From great food and cheap drinks, to stunning views and a fascinating history, here are my tips on how to spend an unforgettable weekend in fairy-tale Prague.

1. Stroll along the river and take it all in

There's no better way to start a long weekend then with a leisurely stroll that helps you get your bearings. The Vltava river winds through the centre of Prague, so is a great place to begin your trip if you want to get an idea of where everything is.

We stayed in Andel, towards the South of the city, so once we'd dropped off our bags we walked North towards the Charles Bridge. Wherever you stay though, following the river will take you to the centre of Prague. Stop off for a beer at one of the riverside pubs or boats, and take in Prague's beautiful architecture.

2. Eat at Sangam in Karlín

When you think of Prague you may not immediately think of Indian food; but trust me, this place is incredible. The setting is lovely, the chairs are incredibly comfortable, and the Indian food was some of the best I've ever tasted. Be sure to book ahead, as this place gets busy! And if you're stuck on what to order, ask the waiters for their recommendations. They know their stuff.

3. Learn about Operation Anthropoid at Saints Cyril and Methodius Cathedral

If you're into your World War II history (or have seen the film 'Anthropoid' because you fancy Cillian Murphy) the story of Operation Anthropoid is one that you'll never forget. The assassination attempt on a high ranking Nazi officer named Heydrich in 1942 marked a seminal moment in the Czech Republic's history, and is as inspiring and moving as it is tragic and horrifying.

Visit the Cathedral and Crypt where the Nazis eventually found the assassins in hiding, and learn about the mission they carried out; and its aftermath. It's an incredibly important part of the city's history and is well worth a visit.

4. Grab a quick lunch at one of Prague's Farmers' Markets

There are a number of great Farmers' Markets to explore in Prague, each on different days of the week. We went to the one on náplavka Rašínova nábřeží, which only runs on a Saturday morning and sits on the bank of the river. It's a testament to the market that we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves, despite torrential rain!

If you do find yourself there, be sure to hop on the boat bar Imago Mundi for a drink. It's the cosiest little boat that serves a great gin and tonic; as well as teas, coffees, and hot apple with rum (which smelled pretty great). The waiter was fab and had an adorable dog, which helped.

5. Explore the Old Town Square

A trip to Prague isn't complete without a stroll through the Old Town - but do beware, it's the busiest part of Prague and is pretty tourist-heavy! It's beautiful though, with colourful buildings on all sides, ornate fountains, and the legendary clock that makes it onto all Prague travel guides.

Despite being a beautiful square and a great base from which to explore the city, the Old Town isn't the best place to eat or drink. As with most central hubs it's really overpriced compared to the rest of Prague. We found ourselves strolling through a lot, as it's right at the heart of the city and is nearby lots of the nightlife. But if you're looking to avoid the tourist traps when grabbing a drink or dinner, it's worth heading further out.

6. Catch a show at the opera

Prague is famed for its State Opera, and is home to a number of beautiful theatres. There are plenty of cheap seats available for £15 or less if you're happy to sit up in the gods. It's a great way to spend an evening if you're after an excuse to dress up and experience some culture!

We saw Lolita at the Estates Theatre. As operas go it was quite heavy, but we were really glad we went. I'd highly recommend checking out what's on if you're headed to Prague.

7. Visit Prague Castle and soak up the views

No trip to Prague would be complete without a visit to the Castle, which stands sentinel over the city. It's really pretty up there, with incredible views across the whole of Prague. It's also completely free to have a look around the grounds (but you do have to pay to go inside). It's a beautiful area to explore, so definitely set aside a morning or afternoon to head up there.

8. Climb Petrin Hill and sample traditional Czech food at the top

Adjacent to Prague Castle is a big hill, where you'll find Prague's bizarre miniature of the Eiffel Tower and some really nice beer gardens. We went to Klášterní pivovar Strahov - a 17th century brewery - for some drinks and food, and ended up staying for hours! The food was yummy, and I'd recommend it if you're looking to sample some traditional Czech fare (pork features heavily, so it's not ideal if you're a veggie like me, but they also do some really nice cheese dishes).

If you head up Petrin Hill during the afternoon, stay until the sun goes down to enjoy stunning views of Prague's city lights. The walk back down the hill, across Charles Bridge and into town is particularly pleasant in the evening.

9. Head to Andel for affordable pubs and breweries open late into the night

Our Airbnb was in an area of Prague called Andel, which was incredibly well connected (the tram service in Prague is amazingly quick and cheap) and was great for pubs - many of which stayed open til 4am on the weekends! My kind of night out.

Drinking and eating round here was far more affordable than in the centre of town, so it's a good place to head should you fancy a quieter evening away from the main tourist thoroughfare. Pints were around £2, and there were some great, unpretentious restaurants full of locals. Always a good sign!

I'd also highly recommend our Airbnb, which exceeded our expectations. It was one of those rare apartments that was actually better in real life than it looks in the photos! Check it out here.

Literally haven't written a blog post in months, so this is exciting! Life lately has been pretty damn busy - not least because I got a proper adult job working in PR which is a lot of fun, but also leaves little time during the day for lurking on street corners having pics taken. C'est la vie!

I went to soak up some culture at the National Gallery last weekend with one of my friends, and I asked her to take some photos afterwards because I'm obsessed with my new Converse. They are so delightful. The National Gallery was also alright but we basically just chatted the whole way round and I don't remember much of what I looked at, so maybe I should go back. Our intentions were good, but gossiping held my attention more than the Monet. Sorry Monet.

Very much enjoying spending some proper time in London though now that I'm back here for good and actually have (some) money to spend. Recommendations on funky exhibitions and things to do and see are always welcome!!

thoughts on blogging in 2017

I started a new job up in London last week, and its got me thinking about where blogging might fit into my new routine over the coming months.

I don't blog as much as I used to these days, and only do so when I really feel like it. I used to focus a lot more on the number of followers I had on all platforms, but now I don't feel so worried about having a huge presence in the blogging world. It seems to have become increasingly difficult to stand out unless you are willing to open a massive window into your life for your audience to peep through. So many of my favourite bloggers seem to live and breathe social sharing, which I know is necessary to stay relevant. But this is definitely something I struggle to do myself. Trying to curate my life for the entertainment of others on social media, whilst I'm still trying to work out what I want that life to look like in actuality, is not an easy task; and isn't one that I think I will ever be totally willing to undertake.

Not only that, but so many parts of blogging have become such a minefield recently. As much as I love blogging and sharing pretty snaps on Instagram, some of the fun seems to have been taken out of it slightly. I'm constantly reading tweets pondering how we can beat the Instagram algorithm, and how much we should be paid to work with brands. The relate-able element of blogs seems to have disappeared slightly, as bloggers have become potentially hugely influential international celebs with agents and rates and media packs and professional photographers. It all seems to have become so, well, serious.

Don't get me wrong - there are so many career bloggers out there whose posts and feeds I absolutely love, and who I know put so much work into making their content interesting and original. The sudden professionalism of blogs is for many an extremely positive and career-defining opportunity. But it is a big transition to make for those who, like me, never had their sights set on the big time. It has become all too easy to become totally irrelevant unless you can fully keep up with the biggest and the best, and there doesn't seem to be much space in between for the small to medium bloggers to keep it real (and slightly sporadic) yet still enjoy some influence and retain a captive audience.

Could it be the case that in a few years' time, the less-polished authenticity of the micro-bloggers' voice will win out over the well-planned and professional voices of the biggest influencers? Is there room for both in what was once such a tight-knit and supportive online community? I certainly hope so.

I don't want to sound bitter in saying all this. I am all too aware of the distinct lack of time and effort that I put into growing my blog consistently, so am completely not expecting tons of people to read it and for lots of big brands to want me to work with them. Not only that, but I realise there is a lot more to gain from blogging than just paid work and a dedicated social following. But part of me wonders whether my own lack of consistent interest in blogging recently is partly a result of the fact that I know how difficult it would be to really get myself noticed these days unless I seriously stepped things up and committed lots of time and effort. It is difficult to stay motivated when the bar has been set so high.

Ultimately though, if you're in the game for the right reasons this shouldn't matter too much. I am definitely not out to bash the hard work of those at the top who have paved the way for bloggers' being extremely well-respected for producing high quality digital content. If the bar is high and people want to reach it, they've just got to up their game. And doing some hard-work to get where you want is never time wasted.

A great thing about the internet is that there is space for everybody, no matter what you're there for. Maybe in a few years' time I'll eat my words as I get a redesign and try to make it as a big-time influencer... but until then, amymace.com will remain my small internet space that I will use in whichever way I see fit, regardless of the size of the audience my sporadic blog posts attract... and I think that's alright.

Summer 2017 has been a busy one; and all the more memorable for it. I will be putting my first foot on the career ladder on Monday with the start of a 'real' job so it feels like summer is coming to an end; I am inevitably saying goodbye to the unadulterated and prolonged freedom a university summer offers! However I did make a conscious effort to make the most of the last few months of my relatively responsibility-free life, and here are a few of my favourite snaps from my travels.

the perfect pink trouser

Yesterday was my brother's birthday, so we went for a bite to eat at Saffron in Clifton before soaking up some rays at a nearby rooftop bar. If you're ever in Bristol on a sunny day I would highly recommend Saffron for some tasty Moroccan vibes and The White Rabbit for some beers (and table tennis if you're into that). Can't beat a mid-week pint in the sun!

These trousers were a recent Topshop purchase, and (now seemingly ludicrously) I was initially unsure as to whether I'd get much wear out of them. A few weeks down the line and I've worn them constantly - rest assured that cost per wear figure is well down. They brighten up any look (as well as my life) and are just so so comfy I almost feel like I'm in PJs. Since getting these I also seem to have bought about a million other things that are this exact colour - they are influential and stylish. Hot pink is fast becoming the shade of the summer for me.

Teamed with some wardrobe staples - a pair of white converse and a baggy breton tee - I was definitely prepared for all the drinking, eating and strolling that defined yesterday. Today is a great day because I bought a new phone after two weeks of being phone-less (completely self-inflicted - lost it at a festival, oops). The initial psychological benefits of such an online disconnect were huge, but after two weeks of missing important calls and forgetting things because I couldn't add them to my to-do list, the novelty was starting to wear slightly thin and it became a total inconvenience. Massive respect to those people out there who choose not to have smartphones. I have learnt that the to-do list on my phone is pretty much the only thing that keeps me organised and mentally tidy! Sad but true.

In this post I really want to talk about finishing uni because, well, I just did. The time that I've been slightly dreading ever since starting at Bristol three years ago is upon me, and it's a real heady mix of emotions to be quite honest. Three years studying one subject is pretty intense, so to be free from that routine is quite exciting. By the same token, the job hunt looms and makes my belly flip if I think about it for too long at a time.

It's quite strange how, having been on the straight and narrow education train for so long, life opens up as soon as you get off after uni. This should be a really exciting thing that inspires hope and excitement about the opportunities that are out there, but there seems to be something about peoples' attitudes towards young graduates' futures that is just so pressurizing and critical and frustrating. Obviously we all need to work, but what on earth is the point in scaring us into rushing into a job that we might hate, at a point in our lives when most of us are genuinely happy and young and at our social and intellectual peak? Leaving uni has made me feel super grateful and proud of the amazing friends I've made and all the successes we've shared over these three years. The last thing any of us want is to have this sense of fulfillment undone by the dissatisfaction of a rushed and heartless job hunt.

(I don't know why I'm laughing, it's not that funny)

In my (limited yet thought-provoking) experience, I think the most valuable thing a recent graduate can foster right off the bat is patience and an open mind. Like a lot of people at this stage I have an idea of what I want to do in the next year, and a vague plan as to how I could go about getting there over the next few months. And I also know that the plans I have may not be possible right away because I've booked up some fun things to do this summer which will make 24/7 job searching an impossibility. And this may not please my family or anyone else who thinks I could do 'better'. But what is better? And realistically, what's the rush? Earning money will obviously be a necessity very soon for me and any other graduate, but I think it's important not to let that nasty post-uni pressure about the 'right' ways to do it get in your head. I also refuse to feel guilty for wanting to actually relax and have some fun this summer. Not to do so would be counter-productive, stressful, and would probably wind up with me making some rushed decisions about my future that I don't really believe in.

Real ambition and inspiration rarely come to fruition in moments of high stress and panic, so I think it's crucial that we try and leave it out. If anyone, like me, experiences occasional floods of future-fear, have a little faith in what you've spent the last three years working for and who uni has made you, and just chill out and take some time to reflect on what you've achieved. Embrace the uncertainty because it's not going to last forever - try not to take this small period of your life super seriously if you know that that attitude is going to stress you out and impact your happiness in the long-term. We've all worked bloody hard and have no doubt developed different ideas of what success looks like, so as long as you stand by yours and do the right thing for yourself, I don't think you can go far wrong at this point.

Here's to the future in all it's unknown and unstable glory! I don't know who you are or what you look like but I think we'll get along just fine.

Before I begin, big shout out to my big brother for resuming his role as my blog photographer (if under duress). He has moved back to Bristol and so is now available to be pestered by me for pics again - hurrah!
I'm writing this in the library which pretty much defines how life is going at the moment. It's a Saturday for crying out loud!! Procrastination levels are definitely high at this point but university is almost over... two more week til I can kiss goodbye to the essay writing forever.
In terms of my outfit, I think it's fair to say that I'm a big fan of the frills thing that seems to be everywhere at the moment; in fact, I'm a fan of all the big trends that are gracing our high street and draining my student loan this Spring. Pink? Tick. Pastels? Tick. Embroidery? Tick. Frills? Big tick. I'm just looking forward to when the weather heats up and my summer wardrobe can really rear its head. Bring on the travels, the tans, and the day that I will never have to study ever again!!

Same trousers, different day! Sort of wishing I was looking and feeling as fresh as I did when we shot these photos last week right now... instead, I'm curled up in bed ft. PJs and dressing gown feeling extremely sniffly and more than a little sorry for myself. But never mind, life is a game of ups and downs after all! And it's a Sunday, so if it's ever going to be suitable to be sickeningly lazy it's today I suppose.
Sometimes a good outfit is all you need to sort yourself out when you're feeling rubbish. Being a uni student I too often find myself throwing on the comfiest, easiest thing going; but in reality, getting a little bit dressed up is a great remedy on those down days. If you look convincing, chances are you'll feel it, too. Maybe it's time to take my own advice and get out of these PJs..

Happy 2017 everyone! First blog post of the year and I'm sporting some new purchases thanks to the ASOS A-lister vouchers. I'd racked up a fair few over the last few months of 2016 which says a lot about how much money I spend on ASOS...but at least now there are rewards!
We braced the Bristol cold to snap some pictures earlier; you know you have good friends when they'll wait out in the drizzle holding your coat whilst you pose for some blog pics. All very glam. I tried to smarten up my sweatshirt with these tailored trousers I picked up in a charity shop last week for a mere £4. Couldn't possibly leave them behind! Really enjoy a bit of sportswear but don't always want to be looking like a) I just got out of bed or b) I am on my way to the gym. Enter, the trousers!
We also had to make the most of actually getting dressed and getting out today by taking some pics. Everyone's in exam mode at the moment, and despite the fact that I have no exams and handed in my dissertation last week, I've been fully making the most of the chill time before my final term at uni EVER really gets going. 2017 is going to be the year of my graduation and initiation into proper adult life. 100% terrifying but also pretty exciting. Bring it onnnnn.

So glad Converse have made a come back lately. They make me feel like a big kid again and who doesn't love that? I remember saving up all my pocket money to buy a hot pink pair when I was about eight, then threw them out a couple of years later because I thought they were sooo uncool. Little did I know that I'd be back on the bandwagon ten years down the line! Love the 90s vibes with these straight leg Zara jeans, too, which I pretty much live in these days. Super caj, super comfy, win win.

Last weekend my girls and I thought we'd treat ourselves to a nice lil' saturday brunch. There are so many lovely brunch spots in Bristol so choosing where to go is always a struggle, but we'd heard so many great things about Pinkmans that we thought we'd give it a go. It only opened at this time last year, but I can totally see why its got such a great rep already. The food was delish; I had the shakshuka and it tasted just as good as it looked. We also got some of the fresh pastries to take away. Peanut butter and grape jelly doughnuts? Would've been rude not to. They made the perfect post-brunch library snacks. Because we go the library on Saturdays these days, oh the joys of third year.

bristol textile recyclers

Last month I was invited down to Bristol Textile Recyclers vintage warehouse for their monthly fashion salvage kilo sale. They collect 20 tonnes of textiles daily, picking out the best of their vintage pieces for the public to rummage through once a month, and at only £6 per kilo it's a pretty sweet deal. They even had tea and coffee making facilities in case all that rummaging gets too much. I had a lot of fun searching through the containers for some gems, one of which was this lil' pink suede number. Such a winner, I was so chuffed when I spotted it! I also got a few other bits and pieces which I'm sure will make their way onto here in the coming weeks. In the meantime, check out BTR's Facebook page for details on when their next sale is; it's so worth a visit if you're in Bristol!

In July I spent three nights in Rome, the beautiful and bustling eternal city whose mention will always first and foremost make me think of the Lizzie Maguire Movie. Bloody love it. It is a beautiful place to be: the food was tasty, the sun absolutely scorching, the Birra Moretti ice cold and super refreshing (Aperol Spritz's on the other hand, not so much.. anyone else think they taste like children's medicine?).

Rome was a great introduction to Italy and I can't wait to return after my first encounter with its capital. Bring on Florence, Como, and the Amalfi Coast...maybe in a few years.

It comes as no surprise that Zara have nailed it once again this season when it comes to fulfilling all of our funky trouser needs. Frills, flares, asymmetrical hems - you name it they've gone and done it, and quite frankly they've done it better than any other high street shop (it's a big claim, but I'm sticking by it). Never did I think I'd be able to wear a frill without looking and feeling like a total frump, so thank you Zara for making frilliness cool again. My bank account may not be thanking me, but my ankles definitely are.

A trip to Barcelona wouldn't be complete without a few things: Sangria, tapas, one euro Estrellas and little bit of Gaudi. One of our favourite mornings in the city was spent on a Gaudi walking tour, a great way to learn about and therefore fully appreciate the breathtaking architecture. I can't wait to return and see what we missed.

MONKI CULOTTES // TOPSHOP TEE // VANS TRAINERS

I bought these culottes in the summer after much deliberation, and I'm bloody glad I did. Denim has got way funkier these days and I like it. Gone are those basic, black, slightly thinning, super skinny, pretty-much-leggings jeans of my teens, thank goodness. I think a Gucci-style embroidered pair should be next on the agenda.
