My Favorite Cabinet Hardware Sources

Cabinet Knobs and Pulls.... Today I am going to break down the good, the bad & the ugly on cabinet hardware. Plus I will be sharing all of my favorite sources for practical to fabulous knobs. So this will be your cheat sheet of sorts on where to save or splurge or choose form over function.

Tip 1 // Choose Quality, especially in a high functioning area.

Like most of you out there, I have picked up the multi pack of knobs because they were the most economical. Now granted, I tried to choose the "fanciest" of the economical option. As I am sure you did as well. Unfortunately, whenever I have made these decisions I am stuck replacing defective knobs six months later. Either the finish rubs off, or even more frustrating... the knob breaks. So I do recommend investing in a quality knob or pull up front. You will save money in the long run by not having to reinvest in new knobs every year or so.

I find this to be most true in high use spaces: kitchens, bathrooms, dressers... especially dressers in kid's rooms or for those of you with tough husbands. For these areas I look for a solid body, meaning one solid knob or pull with the only other part being the screw that attaches them to the drawer or cabinet. Nothing that can potentially come apart into multiple pieces or parts. This will automatically extend the chances of longevity for your pulls.

For example, we used these knobs & these pulls in #ProjectFamJam's kitchen last year.

Tip 2 // Go ahead, get fancy.

There are some absolutely beautiful knobs out there. Special decorative pieces that can stand alone and almost become a piece of art. For these knobs, I recommend using them in places that don't see much physical action, but look good just being there. For example, I used these gorgeous quartz knobs in our living room. This is a removable panel that hides all of our tv components. Because we have installed some inferred cables for our equipment, we no longer need to access this space for our components anymore. This gets opened maybe once every few months, but is right in the middle of the living room. So this was the perfect opportunity to showcase some killer knobs.

Consoles, Nightstands, Guest Room Dressers... these are all great locations to have some fun with a more decorative knob as they receive less use.

Tip 3 // You can always change the hardware.

Just because you bought a piece of furniture, does not mean you are stuck with the knobs/pulls that came with it. Often times, a quick swap can completely transform a piece. And they aren't permanent! So go ahead and experiment with the looks you can achieve.

Tip 4 // It is all about options!

A lot of stores have stepped up their hardware in a big way. So it is easier than ever to find the exact look you are going for. So when I ordering knobs or pulls online, I order one of each that I am interested in. It is all about options!! This allows me to inspect the quality and scale in person before investing in 20 knobs upfront and not being thrilled. Most stores have great return policies, so I just ship the knobs I don't want back and order the winner, having full confidence in my purchase.

Here are a few of my go to online retailers for knobs and pulls.

CB2 // Decorative and functional. Their new collection of hardware is on point and right on trend.

Anthropologie // Mostly decorative, but they always have great options.

World Market // Again, mostly decorative than your standard workhorse, but you can get the Anthro look for less here.

Hobby Lobby // Another great source for the Anthro look for less, especially if you use that 40% off coupon.

Rejuvenation // Quality pulls and knobs that are built to last. Plus all in stock items are 25% off through this weekend!!

Wayfair // Great for those who know what they want or aren't overwhelmed easily. There can be tons of options, so depending on personality this could be a pro or a con. I personally love it.

Also, some brands that seem to be reliable and are often sold at some of the larger stores are Atlas, Liberty Hardware, Rocky Mountain Hardware and Colonial Bronze Co.

Custom Cabinetry // My Custom Finish Revealed

Early last Fall, myself along with talents Simply Grove & Sugar & Charm were all approached by Omega Cabinetry to create our very own custom signature finish for their beautiful cabinetry line. My own custom finish?! Um, yes please! They walked each of us through their process on custom finishing (a process available to anyone, btw) and whether it is a fabric sample, a stain on a vintage piece, a wallpaper sample, specific paint color or a pantone color they strive to match the color exactly! You can even add your own glaze, sheen, etc... I immediately knew what I wanted!

Now, as this was last Fall, this was before the whole color of 2017 being Greenery, and while my color choice is a bit more dramatic, it still falls within that color category. I choose a deep dark green in matte for my signature finish. It is a classic and sophisticated tone that has more interest than your basic black finish, yet doesn't scream green when you enter a space. I am having dreams of seeing this finish gracing a mudroom with a graphic floor pattern. It is a color that can go modern, traditional and all realms in between. It is a color I am naming Emerson, a family name that seems to have some soul and strength to it.

During the creation process, I sent Omega Cabinetry a paint number of Pratt & Lambert's Sierra Night and requested the matte sheen. In a few weeks, a partial cabinet door arrived on my doorstep finished in my moody finish. Oh, and it was love at first sight! Now at this point had I wanted any tweaks, we simply would have made them, but my shade was perfect. So I signed off on the color and then choose three door styles from their extensive collection to show off how versatile it is. I choose Clio, Brentwood, and Beckwith (shown above from left to right).

New cabinets are an investment, so why have something everyone else has?! Having the option to create something custom through Omega Cabinetry allows you to express yourself and your personal style even more. The possibilities are limitless.

While I love color, I am craving neutral right now! Not just your basic linen, but texture & tones of greige. I have loved our antelope wallpaper ever since I installed it two years ago & feel most at home in that space. Lately I have found myself interjecting more of these neutrals around my own home. I have added a large jute rug under my daughters green leopard Kate Spade rug to tone the space down a bit, included this large tassel from Tuesday Morning on our door knob, and just ordered a new toned down vintage runner for our kitchen.

I have a neutral, texture filled pseudo diy happening for you tomorrow. Pseudo as in you might have to tie/glue something... easy, but impactful. No power tools required.

Dresser Nook with Black Shiplap

I had mentioned about this time last year that we were working on the opposite side of my stepson's room, the side I intentionally never showed you because it was basically ignored. The nook area was originally built out to be my daughter's changing pad/dresser when it was her nursery, but being that it was now for a 17 year old boy it needed to function a little better.

He had mentioned the idea of some shelves, in theory my initial thought was great! But the execution was never up to my expectations & they just became a landing pad for everything... this is #reallife people, lol. Product, cables, wires & loads of empty boxes/envelopes for when he might potentially sell an article of clothing he is tired of.

I basically ignored it, because lets face it, he was happy with it & I rarely saw it... but then BHG called & said "we are coming to do a shoot!!" & I said "Awesome!" followed by, "Oh. No." ha. I tried working with it, but never really loved it. It just didn't fit with the rest of his space. So a week before our photoshoot (Thanksgiving week to be exact!) I took on the task of ripping these particle board shelves that were bowing & falling apart & started over. Literally.

Unfortunately, the woods wallpaper was now toast. It was covered in holes from the previous shelf install. So, with time not being on my side I covered it in black shiplap.

And the existing dresser... was my husbands as a child and has been about every color stain/paint in the book. The size was never quite right & it was never very masculine. So I turned to AVE Home and their line of RAW unfinished furniture. (Remember, I used their Bar Tray for the cousin's One Room Challenge?!) Well, they have two options of primed and ready to go campaign dressers. I incorporated two of the smaller versions side by side to create one larger dresser. This was also a better solution as once the desk top was placed on top it was actually desk height now! Not an in-between height no chair ever really worked with.

Now he had more storage in terms of drawer space, bonus for clothes and "product". And we moved the printer into our hallway closet, which is much more convenient for the rest of us when we need to print something, or C needs paper to color. At least now she isn't just bounding into her big brothers room uninvited.

For the shelves, I used the same wood technique for his headboard with some scrap pieces lying around and used some brackets from World Market... FYI... the holes in the brackets are not the same on each bracket!! So don't assume that they will be... lesson learned.

And last but not least, we finally replaced C's old crystal nursery light fixture with this stunner from Rejuvenation!!! We added the ceiling medallion to be consistent with the rest of the house & I just love the juxtaposition of the classic & modern together. Plus, this fixture will transition well down the road.

Favorite Wood Dining Tables Under $1K

For 2017 I am still loving rich stained woods in all forms... and especially on dining tables. We are scheming up ways to get our dining room back over here, so I have dining rooms (and other spaces!!) on the brain. Incorporating a beautifully stained dining table adds a touch of warmth and luxe & mixing in other wood tones and finishes only adds to the feel. As always, my advice is to stay away from the "set". You will get more longevity out of pieces bought individually. And if you already have the "set", try adding in different head chairs or replacing two of the side chairs with an upholstered bench.

Christmas Tree 2016

So I have some very exciting news to share... Right after Thanksgiving, Better Homes & Gardens came and shot our home!! So instead of focusing on dinner, I was busy finishing little details that have been on my to do list for months now!! And as exciting as it was having them back in our home for a few days, I wasn't allowed to put up any of my holiday decor 😳 Normally, the tradition is for the tree to go up Thanksgiving day in our home. And it has been known to go up as early as October for certain campaigns I have done... I am not going to lie, I didn't mind not having it up that early. But once December had hit I was feeling the urge to get that tree up!! But with the shoot, and completing my father's seven weeks of Radiation all around the same time, the tree made it up a little late this year.

Going up a little later, and focusing on the rest of my home for the shoot, left little time for me rethink the idea of new and innovative decor this year. And honestly, how many of you really switch up your decor that much from year to year?! So this year, I went with virtually the same decor as last year in our living room. White Tree (which I am still so in love with!), simple navy satin bows, and touches of sparkle here and there. My only new addition came from an idea my daughter had. I removed my black and gold urchins from our mantle to make room for the garland & she took one and placed it in the tree... ummm, that works! So I quickly hopped on Target.com and ordered a few more boxes of urchins to add to the tree. And bonus, the set of three were on sale.

Our custom made stockings from MindaHome once again made their return & are waiting to be filled with little trinkets and sweets. And a few real gifts have made their way under the tree as well. Normally my pictures have empty packages wrapped for "styling" purposes, so I had to laugh when I had real ones this year!

I'll share C's mantle tomorrow, it turned out pretty darling if I do say so myself!

In the midst of all of the One Room Challenge madness, I decided to put more on my own plate... for absolutely no reason. Does anyone else do this?!! I get an idea & simply must act upon it, immediately! Well, I am glad that I went with my gut on this one. Even though I had absolutely zero "extra" time to do it.

A few years back now, I wallpapered our little awkward hallway. Which resulted in pretty pictures for my site. Behind the scenes however, while I was hanging the paper, we got a very personal, life altering call. One of those calls that rips you to the core. And from then on, the light and bright pretty wallpaper has retained those deep and dark memories. So it eventually got to the point where I simply said, no more. I recreated a wall treatment that I had done in our home years ago. I had loved our wall! It had brought me joy every time I looked at it, and knew that if I painted these walls in the same manner, the constant memory would dissipate. And I was right.

While the memory remains, I am no longer literally walking through it daily... It may seem silly to some, but to me it feels like a breath of much needed fresh air.

For the paint, I went out to our shed and pulled out a few leftover cans... I used Behr's Whisper White on the walls (the same white that is in the rest of our home), and Farrow & Ball's Borrowed Light for the brush strokes. I simply dipped my brush and painted. The paint led the way. The ceiling also took on a new color, Pratt & Lambert's Thyme Green. So at the cost of some time & leftover paint the walls (& ceiling) were complete.

I kept our antique brass quilt rack, aka or towel rack for the adjacent bathroom, and added some new art & lighting.

The artwork is a print by the talented Hayley Mitchell. You can find these prints on Etsy and even Anthropologie! (congrats to that Hayley!!) The colors spoke to me and tie the entire house together, which is nice as this is the very center of our home. I could have gone with a standard white frame which would have been lovely, but rather I sent her off to my friends over at Framebridge and they framed her up in some burled wood loveliness!!! I loved her before, but now 😍 she is a stunner!!

If you are not familiar with Framebridge, they are one of my favorite online resources for custom framing. You upload and image of the piece you want to frame, choose your size & then choose your frame and matting options. You can then ship them your piece using your own packaging or they will even ship you one if needed. Then they frame it up & poof! It is back at your door step to hang on your walls.

A Night In

Popping in for an unexpected evening post thanks to the generous invitation to participate in A Night In, a new blog series hosted by Chris Loves Julia & Yellow Brick Home. They have asked a few of us this evening to take a look into our own home at night... a rare occurrence here in blogland where let's face it, pretty pictures happen during the day. But this evening, I am bringing you all into our kitchen & sharing a pretty typical evening (if the husband is home!).

In the early evening hours, our nook is typically filled with 1st grade homework, sight words to study & if I'm being honest a wine glass for me.

After homework is completed, our little lady likes to stay here & color while my husband & I work on dinner.

I love how all of the different surfaces and artwork in the kitchen sparkle at night when all of the lights are on. And the warmth that comes into the kitchen as well. While a small space, we all tend to congregate here regularly.

Now that there is finally a slight chill in the air, even though it is still unseasonably warm in Atlanta, we are excited to start having some of our favorite comfort foods again. Some foods just scream Fall & my husbands Brasied Short Ribs are no exception. While I don't usually share recipes, it just felt natural to share these tonight.

Using our Cobalt Blue Anolon Cast Iron skillet and Brasier for the first time this season, the entire street smelled good! I drove up after running an errand & was welcomed by the smell of deliciousness. The beauty of open back doors & cool Fall nights... Free smells at the Jackson house.

A quick rundown of the Short Ribs is to start off with a hot cast iron skillet or pot. Then add vegetable oil, or you can be like us and use bacon fat... because why not. Once melted, sear the Short Ribs on each side until brown & then place in the braising pot.

Then add some roughly chopped onions (we used four vidalias), an entire head of garlic to the pot & then four cups of beef stock. Place it all in a 350 degree oven & cook for about two and a half hours.

We serve ours of my famous mozzarella grits & green beans with parmesan.

Striped Bar Tray

This Butler Tray turned out better than I could have imagined. It was one of those projects where I called upon my go to design girls Gwen & Grace about whether or not the stripes would be too much or so much it was good. My gut said good, but they reaffirmed my thought. Always good to have a backup support system!

It all started with this Butler Tray from AveHome. They have a gorgeous line of furniture that is finished and ready to go, but they also have an entire line called AveRaw. Each piece is constructed to a high standard of quality & design, but as the name suggests, they arrive as raw, unfinished wood. And for those of us that enjoy the occasional DIY, or if you are looking for a piece but the color or stain just isn't right, you can customize your own piece!

Now here is where it got tricky... and mostly because I had the flu & was dizzy in the first place. Doing math with a fever is not my strong suit! So I literally just started taping off freehanded with my 1/2" blue painters tape. And wouldn't you know, that it all lined up perfectly. I would obviously suggest measuring first! But sometimes the DIY stars align.

Once I taped it off I did realize that I should have painted the white first (again, blaming the fever) so here is the correct order to duplicate this look:

Prime the wood with a good primer such as Zinsser.

Paint the entire tray white once the primer is dry.

Allow the base coat to dry completely! And apply a second coat if needed.

Again, let dry completely!!

Tape off the stripes and use a small craft paintbrush to dry brush the tape lines... This means getting just a small amount of your white paint on your brush & brushing it over all of the places where the tape meets the wood. This will create a sealed barrier for your tape ensuring that the black paint will not leak through &you will receive a crisp straight line every time.

Paint your black stripes and apply a second coat if needed.

Seal your project.

I would normally use an oil based paint on a project like this, but as there was white paint involved, I wanted to avoid the inevitable yellowing over time. So I choose to use simple acrylic craft paint and I sealed it with this Martha Stewart High Gloss Finish.

And since this bar will be seeing a lot of action, I have also suggested my clients have a piece of glass cut to set into the tray for an added level of protection.

Tassel Butterfly Chair

Thank you for all of the kind comments about this One Room Challenge space!! (If you missed the full reveal, you can find it here.) We had a bit of accent chair drama... Three choices were backordered after the orders were placed and the fourth option arrived but unfortunately was just not right. With a week to spare, my clients had expressed interest in a butterfly chair.

When sourcing the chair I was looking for two important factors: 1. Something in a warm leather 2. Price. Some were gorgeous, but a little outrageous for what it is... and some were a little too college dorm room. Wanting some detail and depth, I landed on this one from Wayfair. And with free shipping and a price tag of only $104, it was a definite yes.

It arrived the day before I took my pictures, so it was cutting it close!! Once in the space, I knew the leather was just what the space needed but had an idea to personalize it a bit more. I ran to the local craft store after styling the space and picked up four bolts of black suede cording. And a mini glue gun... I got back to the house and began making tassels.

I am no stranger to tassels, and use them frequently. I even did a research paper on them in college, for real. So I whipped up four 8"tassels using this tutorial I shared a few years back and held them up to the chair. Yep, just what this chair needed!

To attach them, I choose to use hot glue... The leather flaps on these chairs is super thick, and rigid. I knew that the heat of the hot glue wouldn't affect the leather at this thickness. And as they are placed in the corners, they will not get a lot of abuse.

I was so pleased with the result and think the chair was taken to an elevated level. A little more luxe.

One Room Challenge Week 6 // The Reveal

Week 6 of the One Room Challenge is here! Even though I have been taking my father to radiation treatments daily and have had the flu (twice) during these past few weeks, I miraculously made it to the finish line and I am so happy with the outcome of #ProjectFamJam's new Living Room!!! I took a long narrow space with only two ottomans and a table and have turned it into a fully livable and functional space filled with layers of pattern, texture and lots of black and white accents.

The shelves we built in Week 5 really were the missing link between this space and the kitchen and dining room we finished earlier this year. And after a few coats of Farrow and Ball's Pitch Black paint and a little styling, they truly came to life. The addition of the sputnik lighting from Lucent Light Shop and the curved ottomans and tulip table have given this library wall purpose and allows for an additional seating area.

In between the library wall and the main seating area, we had to add in a little bar action, because cocktails and entertaining are a must in this house! This entire wall was designed around this Marc Jacobs photograph by the artist Camilo Him. My cousin won it at a Silent Auction a while back and we both new it had to live right here.

I searched high and low for the perfect bar cart and landed on this stunner of a butler tray from Ave Home. The really great thing about this piece is that it arrives unfinished and you can stain, paint, seal however you want. I suggested black and white stripes (kind of a bone inlay inspired feel) and got the immediate go ahead. (tutorial found here)

We filled the bar with bourbon, vodka and the best Moscow Mule cups I have ever seen.

I also added this killer brass art lamp from Bellacor. I love how substantial this one is and the brushed brass ties in all of the other light fixtures in the space.

The main seating area is focused around the largest purchase, the West Elm Peggy Sectional. It is large enough to fill the space without feeling overwhelming as some sectionals tend to do. But at the point the sectional was ordered, we had a gray sofa, and two gray ottomans... we needed some color. Having the navy kitchen island and some DIY bleached denim seats in the dining room, the space was feeling a little cold. Incorporating this burnt orange Aztec rug from Dash & Albert by Annie Selke instantly warmed everything up. The orange and rust tones accented by grays and blues helped to pull the entire living room, kitchen and dining room together.

Needing another accent chair in the space, my cousins had expressed their interest in a leather butterfly chair. After we got it into the space, the leather was right, but I felt it was missing something... So naturally I made my own black suede tassels and added them to the chair. lol! It was a complete last minute addition, but a detail that gave the piece a little more personality. (tutorial found here)

Speaking of hand made, so is this custom, gold rimmed, graphic beauty from Jill Rosenwald. The perfect size for sharing popcorn.

And here is the other view of the space, including the double sided fireplace that opens up to their dining room. The mantle was created using an old attic beam that was removed during the demolition. And the two sconces were major finds at our local Habitat ReStore. They are Currey & Co. sconces that were missing their shades. We decided we liked them better for this space without them & at $33 for the pair, vs. $600 a piece... we were really fine without the shades!!

Instead of traditional end tables and lamps, I opted for two floor lamps from LampsPlus that provided a more sculptural feel. Their adjustable heads make reading on this sectional the perfect spot. Unfortunately, they are currently out of stock, but be sure to check out their other options.

The space is completed by this amazing artwork by artist Kate Roebuck from Minted. The design process for this home has been almost completely through text. I would find an inspiration image and immediately text it over for thoughts... and sometimes the exact same image would come back with a note "I had that saved too! hahaha" or she would send me an image & I would respond "I love that too, you have $6000 for that wallpaper?!? haha!" So as soon as I saw this piece, I just knew it was right. It summed up how much fun we have had bringing this house into a new century with a new family to create their own memories.

What I have learned as a designer is that I do not want every space I complete to feel like my home, I want the space to feel like their home. So I incorporate aspects of their style along with little bits of my own aesthetic. And in this space, I feel this aspect most comes into play in the pattern mixing and use of space.

There are 19 different patterns in this space!! But layered correctly, they do not feel overwhelming. It just feels right. It feels like them.

One Room Challenge Week 5 // The Shelves are Up!

So last week I had this genius/insane idea to build a 12' x 8' wall of built in bookshelves with two weeks left of the One Room Challenge. No big deal, right?! It's only time. Well, they are up and in record time! And here is a breakdown as to how we went about getting them up.

I started off with a plan. With these types of projects I have learned the hard way that a well thought out plan and purchase list are key!! Knowing the exact amount of lumber and cuts helps on both time and money. We ended up being $14 under budget and only had ten 9" pieces of scrap wood left. I consider that to be a well planned project.

I worked on numerous layouts for the shelves, but after measuring the space and working with standard widths of lumber we ended up with nine columns of shelves that are 16" wide. Each column then has offset shelves. We stuck with this plan and moved forward to begin building.

Once we had the pre primed lumber from The Home Depot, and gathered up our nail gun and radial arm saw, we began framing out the shelves. We blocked out the height of the existing baseboard, knowing that we would be adding a final piece of matching trim to finish off the bottom.

And once the exterior box was up, the vertical boards went in. Using a nail gun, we toenailed the boards into the bottom and top of the framing checking to make sure everything was level.

At this point all of the vertical boards were in and my husband was unexpectedly called into work. Ummmmm, it was time to get creative as a second pair of hands would have been super helpful!

I had gone ahead and cut down all of the actual horizontal shelves and they were ready to be nailed in. But since my second pair of hands were gone, I cut down an extra 2x4 into two supports that were the height of my shelf. Then I simply placed these two boards onto my shelf, placed the board I needed to nail in on top and nailed it in. This acted as a stand for my shelf and kept the board straight and level for me to attach. It also insured each opening was the same size.

This process also made the work go pretty fast. No need to stop and measure.

The shelves were all in and the final trim boards were attached. Sucker was done!! And with no time to spare. I am off to finish caulking and then paint. I am going to leave you with a little more suspense on the color, but the Farrow & Ball cans are ready and waiting and I promise it will be dramatic!

Custom Roman Shades

There are so many details about this One Room Challenge space that I am adding in a few extra posts over the next few days to help get all of it in before next weeks reveal. I shared last week a sneak peek of the roman shades we installed from The Shade Store and I wanted to talk about the custom process they provide.

We have four windows in this space, and as a reference again here is the before.

Priority one after construction was window treatments! The house sits on a main road and you can look right into the space from the street. We discussed drapery panels, but decided that Roman Shades would better suit the needs of my clients better on this side of the house. But the issue we ran into was that these are the original windows and they are non standard sizes. Enter in The Shade Store and their countless custom options.

We knew going in that we wanted a simple white Flat Roman Shade with a black border to reinforce the newly painted windows. (They look so good black!) And since these were a fairly simple custom order, as far as window coverings go, I took the measurement process into my own hands. But don't worry! If you don't feel comfortable taking the measurements, The Shade Store will send someone out to measure everything for you to ensure the final product is a perfect fit.

After measuring the inside of the frames for an Inside Mount install (that is literally where the shade goes inside of the window frame) I hopped on their website to order.

FYI, we ordered the flowing:

Flat Roman Shades in White Cotton with a 2 1/2" Noir Cotton Border with privacy lining.

The great thing about ordering custom is you can label each treatment and specify which type of cording you would like & it's placement. For example, I labeled them like this:

Right Short Window with Right Handed Cord

And when they arrive, they are each designated with that label, making install pretty fool proof.

Again, I have installed numerous shades before and felt quite comfortable with the process. It was literally two predrilled holes and two screws per shade... but they do offer install services as well!

I followed the simple instructions & had all four shades up in about 20 minutes. Boom.

They all look so good in the space & were a perfect fit. So if you are in the market for some custom shades, drapery panels, etc... be sure to check out The Shade Store. One Room Challenge Week 4 // Call Me Crazy

So, normally by week 4 of the One Room Challenge things are coming together and most of the big stuff is complete or close to it, right?! Well, call me crazy, but I have decided to add a twelve foot wall of builtins onto my to do list. Easy right?! ha

The original plan for this room was a little different, but as soon as we learned that this drop ceiling had to happen, for structural reasons (darn you practicality!) this area has become a focal point structurally and not necessarily for a great reason. So my thought was that by adding a full wall of interesting builtins covering the entire span of the ceiling drop it would result in a more purposeful focal point and could be something quite amazing if we execute it.

The other issue is that this is a young, newly married couple, who have not accumulated years of books and accessories that a twelve foot wall of bookshelves needs to be filled! This in mind, I am planning a layout of the shelves that celebrates some of the negative space and will be graphic enough on its own rather than just horizontal rows.

That being said, we do have to add in some great accessories, so these are going to be making their way into the space very soon!!

And luckily, the rest of the space is really coming together quite well thanks to some major deliveries. We finally got the sectional!!

The custom shades from The Shade Store are up and looking good! (I will have more info about the shades in the next few days.) And two of our floor lamps arrived from Lamps Plus. And I am glad we snagged them when we did! They are out of stock at the moment, but should be back in stock soon.

One Room Challenge // Week 3 Freak Out Point

In One Room Challenges past, I have been pretty cool calm and collected about my space. Lets just say that is not the case this go around! There is a lot of real life happening around us at the same time & I am just trying to keep my kids fed at this point! lol

For those of you that have been following along awhile will know that my father has had some health issues the past year. Well, after a lot of planning and searching these past few months we have rented him a home 5 doors down from us!!! It will be such a blessing to have him so close, but we are moving him (& his 150 bottles of bourbon) at the same time I am trying to finalize my ORC space. So if I seem a bit scrambled this go around, this is why.

So in the meantime, I am tracking packages, unwrapping furniture & stuffing tons of pillows with down inserts! We have both rugs down & the sectional is finally getting delivered today (after being lost in the freight warehouse for two weeks!) Plus, we made a trip to a new local spot, Read Shop (see image above) & have all been inspired to incorporate a few more elements into the room. Which leaves me simultaneously excited & terrified. But the whole vibe in there is on point!

So for now, here are a few more items that have been finalized for the living room.

Easy Room Refresh with One Item

I cannot believe I am saying this, but the Holidays are rapidly approaching! Don't worry, I am not sharing any Christmas Tree ideas (yet) but I am sharing a tip for the upcoming entertaining season.

Around this time, every year, clients and readers alike tend to get ~~paranoid~~ excited about redoing their Living Room or Dining Room in order to have a fresh space to share when hosting parties. My personal opinion as a Designer and also as a real life person is don't cause added stress redecorating your entire room now!! There are so many other things happening in the next few months that you don't need to worry about replacing everything. But for those that do want a new feel, there is one thing (okay, maybe two) you can change that can impact the entire space instantly. A new area rug.

By changing out our bold traditional rug for a graphic geometric in a completely different color way, the room takes on a completely different feel. The only other change I really made was switching out a few pillows, but those are simply pulled and swapped from other areas of the house.

So by changing one major piece, your entire room is refreshed and ready to celebrate the season in style.

One Room Challenge // Week 2 Design Plan

Week Two is already here! And I have been busy scheming and planning what this living room is exactly going to be. As this space spend up into the previously completed kitchen & dining room it obviously needs to fall into the same design vein. This means accents in white, black & shades of blue. But wanting to warm up the area a bit, I wanted to bring in a little more color.

My clients love southwest patterns and accents (not my typical expertise... I love a challenge), so as soon as I found this burnt orange aztec inspired rug from Dash & Albert by Annie Selke, we had our jumping off point. It brought in the pattern they desired as well as the blues and gray tones found in the rest of the space & solved my desire for another color. Done. Ordered.

Now we have a rug & a sofa... the Peggy Sectional pictured above, upholstered in that yummy textured fabric swatch on the mood board. But this space is quite long & narrow, so one area rug just felt a little underwhelming. I decided to layer in another rug with even more pattern and texture. This one, from ATG Stores, helps to soften the space while still providing visual interest. It also ties in beautifully with the rug in the dining room.

So now the once nearly empty floorplan is filled and ready to turn into a real life design.

Not only were the rugs ordered and on their way, pillows are headed our way as well! While my personal style is not typically southwest or boho leaning, I can incorporate my love of pattern mixing when it comes to this space. Fortunately my client loves pillows & pattern as much as I do! So we have stripes, aztec & mud cloth pillows all on order & en route. All of which reinforce the denim color of the kitchen island & the diy upholstered seats I created for the dining room.

Bathroom Shower Track with Ball Chain

I wanted to answer some questions about one of my favorite elements of this space, the shower curtain track. When trying to determine the perfect curtain rod, I knew I wanted something that would draw the eye up. I considered a custom full length shower curtain, but felt that with these clients I could try something a little unexpected.

After some research I came across Trax and knew that this would be the ideal solution. This product comes in a multitude of shapes and is also available in custom sizes. The slimline track simply screws into the ceiling (using the proper anchors) and comes with glides that allow for some customization.

After we received the track, I played around with the glides and learned that the components are easily separated allowing for new ball chain to be connected. You must use a #10 or 4.55mm ball chain.

If you are looking for their standard ball chain, you can order the glides with a custom length of silver ball chain directly from Trax. But I was looking for the perfect gold to go with our faucets and hardware. Fortunately, I stumbled upon this Antique Brown ball chain on Amazon ( I ordered two 10 foot lengths) and took the risk... hoping it would match. It was perfect!

Using wire cutters I cut 18" length pieces and attached the existing hooks to the new gold chain using the metal couplers that came with the chain. After they were hung, a few needed trimming but it was a relatively quick and painless install. The entire project took about 30 minutes.

Now I am off to take some measurements of the living room for the ORC!!! I hope you all have a great weekend!!

One Room Challenge // Week One

Surprise!!! It is One Room Challenge time again!! Last time, for those who may be new around here, I helped my client's recreate their bedroom in dreamy blues. And while those clients lean a little more traditional, this round will be a little bohemian and a little glam.

I will be working on a space that you all are very familiar with by now, #ProjectFamJam! Here is a little recap of what we have accomplished over there so far & what we are planning on doing next.

But as you can tell from the floorplan above, these two spaces open up to the living room, so this will be the space I will be tackling over the next six weeks!

Here was a before shot when the house was purchased.

And this was mid construction, so fortunately this part is done! Don't you just love that fireplace?!

While we do have a West Elm Sectional on order, currently, this is the total amount of furniture sitting on this side of the space. Needless to say, it is nowhere close to complete.

One challenge during construction was that we had to drop the ceiling in this area due to some structural issues. (for reference, the kitchen is directly open to the right of this image) So one of the projects during the ORC I will be addressing is this ceiling change in order to give this space a little more purpose. But I am very happy with the little sitting area we have started! This metal tulip base table & these half moon ottomans from World Market paired with this knockout trumpet chandelier from Lucent Light Shop already have my mind stirring with ideas for a backdrop.

And while there will be lots of black, white and blue... we are looking to warm up the space a bit with some texture, pattern and color. And fortunately, after completing their guest bath in that yummy green, they are starting to embrace a little more color.

#ProjectFamJam // Bathroom Renovation

When first discussing paint colors for #ProjectFamJam, the initial client's desire were white walls and black windows throughout. I agreed that for the newly opened floorplan, that the same paint throughout would help to make the space feel more cohesive. But when it came one space in particular I felt I had to convince them to change their minds. I often think that if you want to ever experiment with color, that a powder room or guest bathroom is a great opportunity for change. So I proposed the plan above for the guest bath.

Moving in, the original bath was something that I am sure someone loved, once upon a time. However, the new owners did not, so the space was completely renovated.

I think that the original pink tile with powder blue paint initially scared my clients from color and they thought a swath of white paint would instantly erase this image, which it would have. But after some persuasion and a promise that if they did not love the color I selected, I would personally go in and paint the space white they agreed to classic tile and Thyme Green (16-19) walls (a new favorite color of mine by Pratt & Lambert). And in the end, everyone is glad they did!

Gone are the cotton candy hues, and now rather a sophisticated green covers every inch of the walls and trim. Keeping the paint color the same in a smaller space allows the space to appear larger as it is not broken up visually.

We used Pratt & Lambert’s Accolade Interior Premium Paint & Primer in velvet for the walls. This paint is both stain and scrub resistant and is formulated to go on smoothly with just one coat making it perfect to cover up those powder blue walls. It is formulated to provide a rich, luxurious finish and looks perfect with the black and white tiles.

Going with a more saturated wall color and wanting to maintain the original request of black and white, we kept the tile selections classic with a simple white ceramic hex mosaic on the floor and a beveled subway tile in the shower. Both are accented by charcoal grout to give them a little more presence.

The gold tones of the modern fixtures really plays off the green well and added a layer of luxury to the space. I even continued the gold into the shower curtain by using a ceiling track system adorned with an antiqued brass ball chain. This unexpected treatment gave the simple linen curtain a little edge. Originally a vanity was desired, but we decided upon a classic pedestal sink with a recessed medicine cabinet above for storage. This again gave the illusion of a larger space. Utilizing a small mango wood table for towel storage brings in both warmth and function to the room.

And as I have said before, lighting in this home has been a special project all on it's own. Each fixture is so unique. I loved that the one we landed on in the bathroom isn't your standard vanity sconce. It is a little industrial and a little glam... both elements my clients are drawn to.

Another favorite of my client's is black and white portrait photography. I love their collection (and have more to show you in future spaces!). When discussing art for this space, I thought that Roger Moore enjoying a few vices was a fun little conversation starter. And I love once we got him up on the wall he appears to be taking a peek out the window, or maybe he is eyeing that custom roman shade from Tonic Living?!!!

I love that I selected the fabric and knew immediately there would be a yes at the end of my proposal. There are just certain patterns that are made for certain people. And this was a match made in flocked flamingo heaven.

The fact that this space is separate from the rest of the home, lends itself to being treated as a separate space. The use of the Pratt & Lambert Thyme Green really set this room apart, where the finishes selected to compliment the space help to tie it in to the rest of the home.
