Bye bye!!

Hi there! It's been a while since I posted something here. I've been busy drawing and working on my portfolio site which has taken up all my spare time.

Besides that I've decided not to put a lot of effort in this blog anymore. The Turning Pages blog was my personal space on the internet where I showed my portfolio, where I collected inspiration and where I archived my vintage stuff.

All of that has changed:

- I have a portfolio site and blog

- I collect my inspiration on Pinterest

and... I've decided to stop collecting vintage stuff... My house was getting too cluttered!

I hope to see you on Pinterest, Instagram or any of the other social media.

I hope you enjoyed my blog, I know I did :-)

I recently found this treasure at a flea market. Unfortunately just the board. It's definately old, but I was not able to determine the year it was published. The illustrations look rather victorian. Anyone have a clue?

The weirdest thing, I don't remember any particular books or stories from my childhood. What I do remember are illustrations in books and I especially remember certain illustration styles. This book is a good example of an illustration style I clearly remember. The softness, the use of colour and most of all how the girls and the goose are illustrated.

Illustrated by Belgian illustrator Marcel Marlier.

I have a few more vintage postcards which I'd like to share!

I always look for the postcards which were actually sent and have text on them. This one is particularly sweet. A mother writes to her son who's away from home for the holiday.

This children's book from 1958 learns kids to tell time.

Cute stories by Clinge Doorenbos, however it's a bit disturbing that these children have to take care of themselves ;-)

Someone else's vintage photos

I bought these photos and negatives the other day. It's always a bit puzzling how these photos end up at a flea market or in a thriftshop. As if no relative was interested in holding on to these photos as a memory. A bit sad actually.

I was happy to have found them, though!

Oracle for women

This collection of books is an ABC for women, I bought it at a flea market. Unfortunalely, one part is missing. It's an encyclopedia from the fifties, the pictures and illustrations are truly hilarious. I just love to browse through them and read the patronising text.

Sunhil soap by Unilever published these books. An absolute must have for vintage lovers!

Two vintage games

The vintage version of well know sliding puzzle. I had a few of these small plastic puzzles. With a company logo or an illustration. I was never able to solve these unless the pieces were numbered.

This game is from 1950 published by Jumbo. I love the small box and the beautiful typography on it.

This game was far from complete when I bought it. All the game pieces were missing! Don't know why I bought it at the time...

It's a game from 1973.

Crochet for kids clothing

I never got the hang of crochet, knitting was more my thing. But I love these old needlework books. I actually have quite a few in my collection. All beautiful ones with wonderful graphic illustrations and - sometimes - hilarious pictures.

I'm always on the lookout for vintage books about dogs, about different breeds or about raising dogs. The vintage photos can be so hilarious at times!

Emily Barletta

Emily Barletta's (recent) work is amazing. It reflects what I love; repetition and stitching. Especially the way she uses colour in her work is very inspiring to me.

Garage Gallery:

'Barletta’s repetitive gestures, marks, and shape building techniques accumulate and combine in mass to create larger works. Each object she makes is to be viewed as a physical container instilled with the memories and experiences that occurred while it was being made. Through her art she builds imaginary machines that organically grow to reference patternmaking, weaving, flesh, blood, cells, plants, topography, molds, and diseases.'

I once set myself to do a stitching project as well (absolutely no comparison!). I loved doing it, but it was extremely more time consuming than I thought when I started out. So I can only imagine how much work Emily Barletta puts into each piece.

I bought this lovely book at a flea market at a church. I bought it by judging the cover. At home I realised just how wonderfully illustrated it is. Especially the last story about the fish (please scroll down!). The stories are written by Godfried Bomans, a well known Dutch writer, the illustrations are by C. van Velsen. The book is from 1954.

Linn Meyers

Linn Meyers' work revolves around drawing. Each dense and intricate ink line drawing is the result of a nearly meditative process by which Meyers lays down consecutive lines into largely organic forms, creating rhythmic repetitive patterns. Working in a range of scales, Meyers has in recent years moved from the page to creating site-specific wall drawings. Ambitious in scale and labor, these drawings can take several weeks to complete, their shapes responding to the architecture of the space and the surrounding elements.

Her work inspires me because it's quite similar to my way of working. I recognise the mediative process and the rhythmic repetitive patterns. I would love to work on a larger scale than 100 x 70 cm!
