After operating a vintage online clothing store for over a decade while starting out on EBay and realizing the fees were astronomical and eating just about all profits, we launched our web store. It was a huge endeavor and unbelievable amount of man hours we put into it, but once again it is time to re-evaluate. Last week we emailed our customers and asked them to take a simple 7 question survey.We had a great response and great insight, and it is greatly appreciated. With our customers in mind we have once again made some changes to our online business.

Vintage Clothing Comparison Shopping

As a vintage clothing dealer both locally in a brick and mortar store and also online for the entire world to view and shop from I do a pretty good bit of comparison shopping. Let's talk about comparing shopping prices for online vintage clothing stores. I must say that with some of them I simply marvel over there prices! For example the well known company "Free People" has added a section to their online store, Vintage Loves. Go ahead take a peek! My first one would have to be this 30’s bias cut slip, so gorgeous this could be worn as a dress if desired.

Next I would have to go with this 60’s Roger’s slip, too pretty to cover up!

2) Lace trim or chiffon trim? What’s your favorite?
I am a lacey kind of gal.

3)Colors or neutrals, whats your preference?

As you can see with the two I have above, I am all about color.

4)Favorite label in vintage lingerie?

I absolutely love the 30’s and the older vintage lingerie, but for more 40’s 50’s labels�
I would have to go with the vanity fair, gossard, movie star.

6)Slips worn as dresses in public?..yea or nay?
Well looking at the two above that I have chosen as my favorites, looks like in some people’s fashion it is accepted today!

Cherry any one? This fabulous 50's cherry necklace with matching earrings is to die 4! Not literally though, of course.

Definitely chocolate, as a kid I got sick on strawberries one time, I guess I never got over the mental anquish! Although I collect strawberry china, go figure!

Charlie boy, I am a child at heart.

Colour My World – What’s Your Favorite?

1) What is your favorite color?
Ohh maybe the rainbow? No that is not fair, so if I have to choose one, I would have to say purple!

2) What is your favorite brightly coloured piece in your inventory?
At the moment a 50’s Suzy Perette Swing Dress, look at those daisy’s!

3) What is your favorite way to add colour to an outfit?
I love to dress up my wardrobe with vintage costume jewelry. The jewelry speaks volumes about a lady, and her tastes of fashion.

4) What is your favorite colour to wear?
I love pink, it looks great with my skin tone.

5) What colour are you wearing right now?
Pink!

6) What colours do you decorate with?
Mostly a soft creamy yellow, it brings sunny bright cheerfulnesss to add to my home.

Is the vintage loves REALLY affordable?

The love for vintage clothing is on the rise. While some may view it as clothing that is gone out of style it definitely is not! Not to mention that vintage clothing is classic and fashion repeats itself, but when you have a major corporation like Free People carrying a Vintage Loves category on their website then one must pay attention to the increase of desire. For many Free People is about unique style, and online shopping. While they do offer classic styles, the question is raised, is it affordable? After viewing comments on Free People's FaceBook fan page it seems to be not affordable to everyone.

While browsing through their vintage collection inventory, I do see some spectacular pieces of vintage. As you can see from the above picture, but I must admit as a vintage clothing dealer myself, I am glad to see the $548 prices on the vintage prom dresses! It let's my customers know what a bargain my prices are!

Measuring Vintage Clothing Is NOT Really a Puzzle!

Learning how to measure vintage clothing is not really a puzzle and it is something that you will want to learn as a consumer if you are going to purchase a piece of designer fashion for your wardrobe from an online store. Here are some tips that will definitely save you a headache:

1) This one is the one step that everyone seems to want to skip, and thinks there is no way that it applies to them, but it is the most important step! Go to your closet, yes I said your closet, and get a similar piece of clothing, similar style, cut. Make absolutely sure that it currently fits you.

2) Take that piece of clothing whether it is a dress, blouse, skirt, jacket, etc. button it up, zip it up, do whatever needs to be done in order for it to look like it would if you were wearing it! Lay it on a flat surface.

3) Now that you have it laying on a flat surface. Measure from underarm seam to underarm seam, and multiple the number by two. (18x2=36 for example).

4) Follow the illustration above for the waist, length, sleeve length, etc. measurements.

5) Once you have collected this information find your item that you are looking at purchasing, possibly this vintage dress, compare the measurements you have from your similar style dress you have measured to see if it will fit. For example:On your garment is you measured a 38" bust, then the particular dress will not fit and you can search for more vintage dresses. But is your dress from your closet measured a 42" or even a 40" bust, then this one will fit!

6) Enjoy your vintage clothing find and order before it becomes a part of the recently sold category and no longer available!

7) And there is a WARNING if you click on the above measuring tape, it is a jigsaw digital puzzle and it will take you to a site of literally 100's of other puzzles and it is ADDICTING! Remember I told you so! Enjoy!

Favorite Maxi Dress in Your Inventory?

Well hello there baby! It would have to be this Roses are….red, pink, by Malia, Honolulu, Hawaii. I absolutely adore this dress.

As a Trend will it be a Hit or Miss?
Ummm, in my personal opinion I think that it will be a hit, maybe not for the young teenage generation that prefer the short, short but for the more mature ladies that like to leave something to the imagination.
Do you wear Maxi Dresses or Skirts?
Although I am only 4′13″ (some of you will catch that) I try to stay away from the maxi, but I simply cannot resist! So yes, sometimes.
Pros and Cons?
Pro ~ For the length if you think you have legs that you don’t want other people to see a maxi length is the way to go.
Con ~ Some of the designs may be to bold for your personality and you would look like a walking billboard!

Vintage Clothing Re-Design: Fashion Student Program

What is vintage redesign? I get asked this question at least once a week! As owners of Sydney's Consignment Boutique of Auburn, AL we have watched students, and other customers, come into our local storefront for almost three years, trying on vintage for fitting and making comments about how cool it is, the fabrics are fascinating, the construction of the pieces are incredible and just one great comment after another. But some of the comments were negative about some of the pieces, therefore I started dreaming, if only I could sew!

Yes I do "own" a sewing machine but have not a clue on how to use a sewing machine, maybe a need a "How to Sew book for dummies", but I really don't think that would help me at this stage of my life! Anyway, I kept pondering the idea, then it hit me, here I am, one block off Auburn University campus with one of the nations best fashion design schools available. Why not see if they want to get involved? After several weeks of throwing ideas around with my husband that is when we came up with the Sydney's Couture Re-Design Clothing. Basically fashion design students and other talented women in the Auburn / Opelika area take existing vintage from my inventory, use their creative mind, re-design it and put it back in the inventory to re-sale. In doing so these students get the experience with hands on, using their talents and ideas, plus when the item sells they get 50% of the sale price of the item! Some other merchants have stated that is a very generous offer to make for them at 50%, but the way I see it is, I can't sew and without their help and expertise there would be no re-design program!

Let's talk a little about the pieces modeled here:

This vibrant hot pink Hawaiian psychedelic dress is simply adorable. It is a 70's dress that was originally a maxi dress with long sleeves. Look at what the fashion artist did with this!

Here you will find a vintage 60's dress with soft lilac flower bouquets in the print and lace down the bodice of the dress. In the photo shoot we added a vintage 80's wide belt that matched perfectly! Adds class and style!

On this piece it was salvaged. This 40's crochet lace neckline was simply too gorgeous to throw out but the bottom of the dress, was totally shredded and ready to dispose of. I showed it to one of the fashion designers and she was thrilled to get her hands on it, and re work this piece. She added a deep navy blue silk bottom, very much like the original piece, elegant and classy!

I will go ahead and state it here, I am very careful on what I give to the students to re-design, and yes I am very concise to the fact that each garment is a piece of history! Keep in mind while shopping you are helping a design student with their career!

Paul McDonald Top 24 American Idol

American Idol! One of the most watched TV shows, One of the most loved TV shows, and NOW look who is one of the TOP 24 contestants! Paul McDonald

Paul is from Huntsville, AL, you know the rocket place in northern Alabama, just a little south of Nashville, Tn. He studied at Auburn University, yeah you know War Eagle Baby! That is how we met Paul, a little over two years ago in our vintage clothing store, he and the band High Tide Blues (now The Grand Magnolias) walks in one day and needs some "band gear"! (as most bands do that play in our local college town). Along with Paul were two more of the band members Jonathan Pears & Cragon Sims, all are cool top notched guys looking for cool shirts, etc.

This began a regular little habit of these guys, come by Sydney's when you are back in this neck of the woods, she has got the gear! There is one thing I will say about Paul, only knowing him in the store, however, he is humble, and appreciative. That says a lot for a lead band singer, no matter where you are on the charts!

Well look at him NOW, top 24 American Idol! Some may say, unbelievable, nah man, when a talent is given, it can be recognized, but use it wisely! Paul here is a shot out from Sydney's Vintage Clothing in Auburn, AL, we wish you the best, and we hope you go all the way!

A 40's Vintage Dress Can Wake You Up in the Early Mornings

How many of you are addicted to FaceBook? Better yet how many of you are addicted to Vintage Fashion? I have viewed the Vintage Life magazine website a couple of times in the past year, but not until today did I subscribe! Something caught my eye as I was looking at the news feed on Facebook this morning and realized, I have seen that dress! Yes I recognize that dress, I sold that dress, who's profile picture am I looking at? Okay so like it was five something in the morning when I discovered it, give me a break. But it woke me up, even before my daily cappuccino!

After clicking on the picture and making it larger, then I was clear, that is the 40's dress with the floral and butterfly print, it was splendid! I am loving the model on the front cover of the magazine with the red hair and curls! Here is the dress when I had it pictured in my online store for sale.

It is neat to find out where you actually ship a piece of vintage to, who wears it, what was it for, every day use? Costuming for theatre? A collector? A movie set? It is inspiring to me to see pictures of what happens to a piece after it leaves Sydney's Vintage Clothing online store.

Looking forward to seeing the entire issue with the cover front! Love it!

Red Carpet Runway with Sydney!

Recently I hosted a Girls Night Out Fashion Show four our local Auburn store. The models were selected and the preliminary planning began. In the planning of the show, as owner of the store I allowed the models to choose what they wanted to wear on the runway! These models browsed the store, scanned the racks for their sizes, and went to the dressing rooms. Majority of the models chose vintage! I say that surprisingly because 95% of my Auburn boutique is modern day designer labels! Why did I let the models choose their own clothing for my show? I wanted to see what appealed to them, see what they thought is high fashion for today! Take a look at some of the fashion that came down the red carpet runway!

Down the runway is Emmie in a vintage velvet and front corset tie Gunne Sax dress!

Vintage 1950's white peek a boo strapless wedding dress with tulle netting and built in crinoline. Accented with a netted hat! Madje wore cowgirl boots underneath! This strapless wedding dress has a bustle in the back as well....simply GORGEOUS!

Courtney modeled a 1940' wedding gown with a sheer neckline ans long sleeves. Ivory satin, Hollywood Glam style for sure! Long train on the 1940's wedding gown with a bustle in the back. This wedding dress is gorgeous as it is, or you could meet with one of our fashion designers and it could be re-designed to meet your needs.

Stephanie wore a Shimmering Turquoise Beaded Halter Prom evening Dress with matching set of rhinestone jewelry.

Chocolate brown Cache strapless semi-formal modeled by Jessica with a vintage wide brim hat accented with flowers.

Modeled by Heather is one of our classic vintage re-design's. This piece is a 1940's crochet around the collar and the original silk was shattered and not wearable. One of our design students from Auburn University added a deep navy blue silk back tot he dress to make it wearable today, very much like the original design. I absolutely love how these students are designing and learning how to make some of the vintage pieces wearable again and save them!

Local Artist Will Paint Your Pets!

I think it is incredible when you see people with talents and they use them. This is definitely the case with one of Auburn's local artist, Toby Hanna. I met Toby and his wife, Mary in a local small group, soon realizing the talent he had. After viewing some of his art work, I knew that he was a person that I wanted to tell about on my blog! Why? He is using his talent! Simply put.

Recently in downtown Auburn had it's 4th Annual Summer Night Art Walk, co-sponsored with the Auburn Downtown Merchants Association and the City of Auburn. Toby was one of the artist set up at this event. I visited his booth set up, the one picture that amazed me so was a collage of cardboard! I will not describe it here, I will leave that for him to post on his Face Book page, it is really incredible!

I encouraged him to write our a biography about his talent, his experience, how he became an artist, etc. Here is what Toby had to say:

"I've been drawing and painting for as long as I can remember. I had no formal art training until I got to Auburn so I guess you could say I'm self taught. I mainly paint in acrylics though I have done watercolor and am looking into trying my hand at oils. I also like working in pastels and colored pencils. My paintings tend to be loose in style. I don't know if you could call them abstracts though. I like experimenting by adding textural elements to allot of my paintings. I feel like (no pun intended) they give and the way textures seem to take a life of their own. A lot of times I start with an idea and halfway through get taken in a completely different direction. That spontaneity is another of the things I love about painting."

"As far as a subject matter, I tend to paint things that have meaning for me. I guess that's why so much of my work deals with religious subjects, since my spirituality is a big part of my life. My painting is a way to try and capture my feelings and expand on what I see in God's creation and His word. It's my way of honoring Him and the gift He's given me."

"As far as my animal portraits go, I've always drawn them in one way or another. Most of my recent ones have been commissions by pet owners. There is such a special bond between pets and their "parents" and I enjoy when I get to celebrate that with a portrait of a "special family member". Here are some examples of what he has done for pet owners!

"My favorite piece so far as to be "Full Armor", a work I did based on the chapter of Ephesians that talks about putting on the full armor of God. It's done in acrylic and collage with the collage part being board, tacks, screen and the other stuff I had laying around my studio! It is actually 6 12" X 12" paintings that I attached together in the form of a cross then framed art."

As you can see for yourself Toby is using his talent and it has been proven a winner, he recently received one of the nine merit awards for his "Evening Tide", that was displayed in the Jan Dempsey Community Arts Center. Dancing Through The Decades

As the owner of a local business in Auburn, Alabama we have the opportunity to help the local schools, theatres and other businesses in the community. This past school year one of the local school's performed Dancing Through The Decades for their spring music dance performance. I must admit as the owner of Sydney's Vintage Clothing in downtown Auburn, I was thrilled to get to help with the costuming.

Vintage Clothing Store: Mannequin May Be Fired!

Hooked on Vintage! I love when ladies or gents shop the online store or the Auburn, AL store location and they absolutely love vintage clothing!! Over the past 9 years of selling vintage clothing online, I have built a great customer loyalty, and you know who are, while reading this blog, and I want to say thank you. Without customers this job, business, would not exist. So a big shout out from Sydney and her family, Thank You!

The customer pictured here has sent pictures two times of the vintage she has purchased from the online store. Folks I must say, she is made to wear vintage! She added yellow shoes to go with this 60's aqua and white geometric design dress. Which looks splendid!

One may think with the picture below that it was a photo from back in the day, with the older house. I am loving' it! Reminds me of old TV shows!

After seeing pictures again of a satisfied customer dressed in vintage, purchasing an item from our online store, from a picture of a mannequin, I really want to fire my mannequin! It still amazes me the difference a garment can make on a human body versus a plastic mannequin or a wooden store hanger. Ladies & Gents remember this while you are shopping locally, take time to try the garment on, you just might be surprised at how outstanding you would look! Also nobody else in your community will be dressed like you, be unique wear vintage today!

So now the dilemma, Do I fire the mannequin or keep her? Please leave vote and leave comment!

The Vegabond's Classic Music & Vintage

As the owner of a local Auburn, AL store we often get music bands shopping for stage gear. Recently The Vegabonds visited our store to get ready for a photo shoot. I must proudly say they are looking sharp from our vintage men's clothing selection!

The Vegabonds formed in 2009 in where else?, Auburn, AL! They started as a combination of two bands and two newcomers and they have not stopped since. Influenced mostly by The Black Crowes, Gov't Mule, Kings of Leon, and Led Zeppelin, The Vegabonds feel like they are a different sound than heard before. The Vegabonds pride themselves in putting their own twist to every cover song they play, making each song sound like you just heard it for the first time, again.

Mostly performing throughout the Southeastern part of the USA, catch them on one of their scheduled tour nights. Let us know what you think! I am sure you will enjoy! Thanks again guys for your continued business.

Yet Another Satisfied Customer Wearing Vintage

It is simply A M A Z I N G to me the difference of a vintage clothing piece hanging on a wood hanger from our boutique, modeled on a plastic mannequin or on a beautiful person! Once again a vintage dress comes alive!

This dress was only listed in our online vintage clothing store for about two weeks before it sold. Kara, pictured above purchased this dress along with another treasure. After she was pleased with her order I received an email with her photo of her wearing this dress. Isn't she gorgeous! And I must say the vintage hat really tops it off, great choice!

As the owner of Sydney's Vintage Clothing in Auburn, AL customers often enter the store, never having ever worn vintage clothing except maybe playing dress up with grand ma's closet. Once they find the garments they like, enter the fitting room and see themselves in the mirror, I must say most of them are amazed! Once again, learning how to wear a vintage dress, is all it takes! Wedding Engagement Dressed in Stylish Vintage

It is thrilling to me to see local customers that are well pleased with the service and quality of vintage clothing that they purchase in our local Auburn, AL store. Angela wanted a vintage dress for her engagement photo announcement and she found a fabulous semi formal deep purple evening dress. She added a vintage cameo brooch to the strap of the dress for a more vintage style.

Several weeks later she brought John her fiance into our store to find him a suit. We did not have one in stock to fit him, but we got his measurements, and told him of our warehouse of approx. 8000 pieces of vintage. We made them an appointment of when they could come back and view what we had found. I must say he looks sharp!

Why am I telling the world about this? It thrills me to see satisfied customers, to know that they chose Sydney's Vintage Clothing, for a photo event that they will cherish the rest of their lives! Not only to have satisfied customers, but I love when customers send me photos of them in the vintage they have bought from me. It announces to the world, vintage fashion is totally in-style & cool!
