For decades, the most beautiful Asian models were invisible, ignored by fashion in favour of other ethnicities. Now things are changing for these women. By Ben Arogundade, author of the book Black Beauty.

MANY FASHION FANS PRESUME that the first non-white beauty to break into mainstream fashion was African American. The truth is, she was actually a beautiful East Asian woman namedChina Machado. Discovered by photographer Richard Avedon in at a New York runway show in 1958, he made history by pressing for his images of the Shanghai-born beauty to be included in the pages of fashion magazine Harper's Bazaar. It was the first time they had ever featured a non-white model.

THE FIRST EAST ASIAN BEAUTY: Chinese-born model China Machado was the first non-white beauty to crossover into mainstream fashion, courtesy of photographer Richard Avedon, who took this shot for Harper's Bazaar in 1958.

Although there was rejoicing amongst Asian women that one of their own had suddenly been brought into the fold, there was resistance to this bold new diversity from within fashion. Robert F. MacLeod, the magazine’s publisher at the time, told Avedon, “Listen, we can’t publish these pictures [of Machado]. The girl is not white.”

Today, the beauty landscape is very different, with a plethora of East Asian models such as Sui He, Fei Fei Sun and star of The Wolverine film Tao Okamoto holding their own amongst the most beautiful white and black women in the cat fight for work. Chinese beauty Liu Wen is currently ranked at number five in models.com'sworld listing, standing out as the first Asian face of Estée Lauder, and with multiple Vogue China covers and campaigns for clients from Calvin Klein to Lane Crawford.

It is a far cry from the racism experienced by China Machado just half a century earlier, and although the inclusion of the most beautiful Asian women models within fashion is partially driven by China's rise as an economic superpower, nevertheless, these new girls look here to stay.

THE STORY OF HOW Tao Okamoto found modelling is a classic. “When I was in junior high I was walking down the street and this guy just came to me,” she recounted to Stylecaster.com. “Then I thought like, oh, maybe I can do something to use my height and looks.”

Born on May 22, 1987 in Tokyo, Japan, Okamoto, plucked off the street like countless other beauties before her, sought the approval of her parents before she took the plunge. After being taken on, Tao worked in Japan for five years before moving to France in 2006, where she made her debut on the Paris runways for Ungaro and Martin Grant.

In 2009 the Japanese native became the face of Ralph Lauren, and in November of that year VogueJapan dedicated a whole issue to her.

Currently ranked at number 30 in Models.com's hot girls, Okamoto recently branched out into film, reaching the Hollywood heights as the character Mariko Yashida, Hugh Jackman’s love interest, inThe Wolverine, in which our hero travels to Japan to train with a samurai warrior.

Okamoto, who remains cagey about who she is currently dating, confessed that when she was younger she once had an English boyfriend while studying as an exchange student, who was less than comfortable with her interest in Jackman. “He was very jealous that I liked Hugh Jackman so much,” she recalled.

Something you don’t even know you are. Beauty for me comes from within, and those people who possess that are capable of radiating their inner beauty outward. These people vibrate at a different frequency and if you pay closer attention to what happens around you, you will notice it also. If you make the inside beautiful, the outside will be beautiful, but if you harbor pain, hate, anger inside you, don’t expect the outside not to be affected by that. I do believe in inner beauty.
I have personally seen people who went from beauty to ugliness because they became so hateful, so bitter, jealous and resentful toward those around them. I call it the loss of innocence. These people change their pure and innocent mind and heart,with a polluted mind and a cold heart.

For example, there is this person whom I met a few years ago. She had a sweet face, nice hair, and a beautiful smile, and now, today, I can tell you that she looks like a totally different person. We don’t interact that much now, I would say once a week, and every time I see her, I am amazed of how much she has changed. She is constantly looking for ways to blame others, she is always so loud and mean with those around her, and she loves to criticize. A lot! I always say that the way you look on the outside says a lot about your insides, and in her case I would have to say that, because of her constant need to put others down, because of her need to compare herself with others, because of her lack of self-confidence and self-esteem, her outer beauty is fading.

You should see the look on her face whenever people start paying her attention. She needs that, she needs other people’s approval and attention in order to feel good about herself, in order for her to feel validated. That is the problem with those who don’t really know who they are, who don’t know their real value and who need others to tell them just that. They don’t know that they are great, that they are beautiful, worthy, smart, intelligent and with great potential.

They don’t know that, and that’s exactly why they need other people to tell them wonderful things to feel good about themselves, that’s exactly why they need only expensive clothes, expensive cars, expensive everything to raise they value. Don’t get me wrong, I have expensive things also, but not because they make me feel more of a person but because I appreciate beauty. I don’t buy things based on their price but rather on their beauty, and I don’t go around telling everybody how much I have paid for this or that. Yes, there are people who give you this information without you even asking. That’s what I call a cry for help.

Try to watch those around you, observe them, observe their random acts of kindness and the way they talk with and about others, observe those people who are gossiping all the time, blaming and condemning, judging everybody around them and tell me if you don’t see the difference.

Another thing you can do is to try noticing those people who, even though they aren’t really that “beautiful”, they have something that makes you like them. They have something that makes you want to be around them and spend as much time with them as possible. I call this inner beauty, and I see these people as having a pure and clean heart, while on the other hand, there are those people who, even though they have really beautiful features, beautiful skin, hair, eyes, etc. , because of the hate that they have toward others, because of their jealousy, their envy and because of their constant need to compare themselves with others, their beauty is fading, their beauty is being transformed into something not really pleasant to the eye. Who wants to be around people like that? Who wants to be around people who lack self-esteem, who complain a lot, who judge and criticize all the time?
These people suck the energy out of you and they aren’t a great company for anyone. People want to be around beautiful, loving, caring, joyful and positive people, not around hateful and resentful people, and you will see how, the moment you change the inside, the moment you make it beautiful, the outside will also become beautiful.Of course not to forget that if you possess both external and internal beauty, feel blessed .Just try your own mind concentration.

Fashion Art becomes Double Standard as Inspiration and Imitation

Many people don't know the history of runway modeling, although modeling is one of the most popular professions. The exact origin of modeling is largely unknown, but we do have evidence that suggests how and where runway modeling began. The runway is a decidedly Parisian idea, forming in 19th-century France. During this time in France, couture salons in Paris hosted events to showcase certain fashions. These shows were considered "fashion parades." An illustrated book from 1885 called "Art et la Mode" depicts four women modeling fashions. In the beginning of runway modeling, only a small and select group of people were invited to the show. In fact, photographers weren't invited to fashion shows until the late 1940s. The lack of photography evidence is one of the reasons why we have little information about the origins of runway modeling.

Through comparing fashion and art, I also look at fashion photographers today whose work is similar to their predecessors. Fashion photography typically represents scenes of life, most often orchestrated but based on reality. There are similar fashion photos because they are similar female scenarios. But there are photographs that have become iconic. I try to support the historic photographers and reveal that postmodern photographers of today who sample the existing lexicon. Yet fashion is less restrictive than art, it is a system of endless inspirations from other creators, from life, and without ownership. Is there ever a line between inspiration and imitation in fashion or fashion photography?

Runway modeling came to America during the early part of the 20th century. American department stores began hosting their own runway shows, modeled after their French counterparts. These shows were targeted toward women. As runway modeling became more popular, department stores all over the country hosted their own fashion shows. These shows featured a narrative of a specific theme, such as Parisian or Asian. Early runway shows were known for their flamboyance and storyline.

When I first started looking at the intersection of fashion and art in photography, I discovered many doubles. There is a precedent of duality throughout art history. In fashion photography, the contemporary double suggests the practice of imitation, the exploration of the other self, sexuality and much more.

"We are at a point of excess with imitation. Everything can be duplicated and imitated. Whatever it is that we have culturally considered with virtual reality, the simulacra, the mirror image, the other, has been made even more apparent and mundane by something like reality tv where we watch reflections of 'ourselves.'"

"But what we imitate is not so much one another, or even the culture industry. We are imitating indeterminate images, fantasies really, and those images are an imitation of real life itself - that is the rupture to imitation. Reality inspires the mirage and we imitate the mirage to bring it back to reality."

Early history: Artists fist began using live models for drawing the human form. Waist to hip ratio was used to determine "ideal proportions" for sculptures.
1391: Queen Isabella of Bavaria gives a life-size doll to Queen Ann of Bohemia to show clothes on a human form. Later called “model dolls,” they became popular gifts among aristocracy and are used as tools for designers.
1852: Charles Worth asks a shop girl to demonstrate designs and she also becomes his wife
Early 1900s: Young girls in good form are used to display clothing but not regarded as socially significant. Lady Duff Gordon of Lucille's begins to groom these girls.
1924: Opening of first modeling agencies.

Late 1940s: Dior’s New Look. Top 12 models all resemble this aesthetic eg. sophisticated, mid-thirties.
1950s: Chanel’s Total Look. Chanel uses herself and family members as models or young aristocrats styled on the designer’s looks and attitudes.

Late 1950s: ready-to-wear (prêt-à-porter)industry begins. New class of clients means models no longer corresponded to high society looks. Mass produced clothes of prêt-a-porter lines homogenizes ideal body type thanks to ready-made patterns.

1960s: Models/photographers are new elite of beautiful people. “natural” models ie. sexy, friendly and relaxed. Opposite to earlier “haughty” unrealness of couture models. Exotic models used.

1970s: The economic recession changes model fees incorporated into the advertising budget. Naturalism and androgyny trends rise. First appearance of Californian look ie. tanned, “natural,” healthy.

Mid/late 80s: Supermodels. Huge fees but safe-bet as represented global ideals of beauty. Surge in media attention of fashion industry.

1990s: Displacement of natural, healthy looks. Grunge style, waif, blasé attitude= Anti-fashion statement. Adolescent body type becomes the ideal, modeling careers started much earlier.
Late 1990s: Trend of modeling with “real people,” those with interesting lives or “unusual “ features.
2010: Revisionist aesthetics, the woman's body is back.

Above the feature in US Vogue, December 2009 considered Lara Stone larger than sample size and stated that she represents a shift in model type.

At a 2010 conference Anna Wintour said: "Each and every one of us needs to realise we are all responsible for models' health," Wintour said, via WWD - adding that designers will have to help end the "tyranny of [sample] clothes that just barely fit a 13-year-old on the edge of puberty.” Wintour went on to say that unhealthy body standards have meant that the past decade couldn't create supermodels, like the kind we saw in the '90s. And so: "Most [models] work only when they have the uberslim physique of the very young, stop getting jobs when they fill out and hence don’t last long enough to develop public personalities, like the '90s supermodels did. As a result, more magazine covers and lucrative beauty contracts have gone to singers and actresses," she observed.

Asian Models Faces Living In Western Countries Were Presented At Tokyo Motor Show 2012

Actually I am busy with my current job and Technology based blogging so a little time to give the update of fashion blog.The Tokyo Motor Show,the 44th edition of which is currently being held at Makuhari Messe,were called the Tokyo Camera Convention,it's doubtful anybody would think it strange.From the lowliest mobile phone cameras to the high powered,geared out dSLRs,plus everything in between,everybody had one in hand with the purpose of photographing two things:girls and cars,and basically in that order.Actually it was no contest.Cars alone gathered modest crowds,but when they brought out one or more models to pose with the cars, the hordes gathered en masse,jostling,elbows out,scrabbling for the best position.And yes,our team were right there with them including me.

I never let myself get in the thick of the crushing mobs of Japan if I can help it,but I wanted to work on my people(meaning female models)photography skills as it's an area where I don't have much(read none)experience.
This beauty was modeling for the Korean carrozeria company CT&T,which makes those tiny electric cars.

I'll be honest,I've never really had the intense interest in cars that a lot of guys seem to have,but as I was there I took a few car photos just for,you know,balance.The rear wheel drive Toyota FT-86,highly recommended by one of my students as a car to watch out for. Will be released in two years time.

I went to the show with MJG and Dale,which in the absence of fearless leader Jason,are my two current photography cohorts.However upon arrival we pretty much split up and did our own thing.

I for one had a great time. It was just like how Colin James put it:'chicks and cars and the third world war',(just without the third world war part).These two girls were helping out Daihatsu.There was even a guy model with them, maybe to attract more females? Sadly,the lenses mainly ignored him.

The Lexus LF-Ch. A great looking car in need of a name upgrade.

I started out shooting with my 50mm prime, then switched to the 11-16mm Tokina for some car shots, but in the end my 80-200 telephoto lens saved the day.

This girl modeling for Subaru was the most popular model there as far as I could tell, maybe it was the leather.Hordes of camera wielding geeks mobbed her,but somehow I made it to the front.

Another Lexus,this time the LFA.Although there were lots of hybrid and family-like cars on display,I focused on the sports cars.Someday when I'm going through my mid-life.I'll no doubt be driving something like this.

Some of the girls were modeling,and others were telling us why we should buy their cars.

Overall it was a good photography exercise.The light was good but the intensity was different depending on which display I was shooting so I was constantly having to adjust the ISO and shutter speed,not something I really need to do much when I'm hiking and the light is fairly constant.other Subaru model.

Cosmetics giants Este Lauder and Maybelline are adding Asian faces to their brands in order to appeal to the fastest-growing market in the world, reports the fashion blog Fashionologie.

Liu Wen, 22, is the new face of Este Lauder and the company's first Asian model.
"China is our fastest-growing market," Este Lauder's global brand president, Jane Hertzmark Hudis, told W magazine. "What better way to honor that than to hire a native of the country?"
The 5'10 Wen was also the first Asian face to walk the runway for lingerie giant Victoria's Secret in 2009. She is already a star in her own country, gracing many pages of Vogue China. She appears in September's U.S. edition of Vogue.

Jayapradha burst into Hindi films in the early 1980s about the same time as Sridevi, her 'South Films' compatriot. They actually co-stared together in a half dozen films where Jayapradha often played the older sister to the younger Sridevi.

Her breakthrough performance in Hindi Cinema came opposite Rishi Kapoor in "Sargam" [1979]. Jayapradha's portrayal of a mute who is in love with dancing (and Rishi Kapoor) connected with the public and was a big hit. The film is a classic of late 70s and early 80s Bollywood.

During the 80s Jayaprada had a successful film couple pairing with Jeetendra. They churned out a number of masala tear jerkers that portrayed her in film after film as the tough, dutiful and all-enduring wife. These films endeared Jayapradha to the traditional conservative section of filmgoers. It was an image that would serve her well when she started a new career as a politician.

Jayapradha began her political career as a celebrity campaigner for the Telugu Desam Party. She was drawn to the political arena because of her interest in the rights of rural woman and that cause has been the focal point of her agenda. Jayapradha eventually held a seat as a Member of Parliament, a post that she is now retired from. Still outspoken Jayapradha currently runs a charity involved in setting up computer centers to educate girls in the Andhra Pradesh. By her own accounts over 180 such centers have been set up so far.

The acting bug is still with Jayapradha and she is still active in Telugu Cinema. Currenty she is planning a Telugu verison of the Bollywood film "Satta" that is a film about a woman who is compelled to enter politics. It would be a role almost hand written for the actress. Whether this star of the South film industry who has made over 250 films in 6 languages will make another Hindi Bollywood film is yet to be seen, but whatever you do, don't count Jayapradha out.
