World Youth Chess Championship

The World Youth Chess Championship is a chess competition for girls and boys under the age of 8, 10, 12, 14, 16 and 18.
The first predecessor of the youth championship was the Cadet Championship. It started off unofficially in 1974 in France for players under 18. The 1975 and 1976 editions were also for U18. The 1976 featured very young players such as Garry Kasparov and Julian Hodgson (12+) but also players slightly older than 18, but younger than 19 such as Louis Roos. It was recognized in 1977 by FIDE as the World Championship for Cadets for players under 17. In 1981 the age limit was reduced to under 16, applicable at the start of the year the championship is played in. It was also the year in which the first women's championship for U16 was played.
In 1979, International Year of the Child, the first edition of the World's Children's cup was played for U14. This cup had four editions, 1979, 1980, 1981 and 1984. In 1985 the U14 edition was included in the first edition of the World Youth Chess Festival for peace. Subsequently, the age categories U10, U12 and U18 were introduced. In 1987 the festival included the sections U10, U12, U14 and U18, while the U16 was help separately. In 1988, U16 was incorporated, but U18 was held separately. It was not until 1989 that the festival included all five age categories. Later, the U16 and U18 were sometimes played at separately from the U10, U12 and U14, as was the case in 1990, 1991, 1995 and 1997. In 1997 the name of tournament was changed to the World Youth Chess Championships. The under 8 category was first introduced in 2006. The next World Youth Championship will be held in Haldiki, Greece.

The World Chess Championship 2010 match pitted the defending world champion, Viswanathan Anand, against challenger Veselin Topalov, for the title of World Chess Champion. The match took place in Sofia, Bulgaria from April 24 to May 13, 2010, with a prize fund of 2 million euros (60% to the winner).^[2] In a dramatic finish, Anand won the match 6½–5½ to retain the title.
The match was to be twelve games,^[3] with tie-breaks if necessary, the same format and length as the 2006 and 2008 matches.

The start of the match was delayed one day due to air travel disruptions caused by the volcanic ash emissions from Eyjafjallajökull. Anand was to fly from Frankfurt to Sofia on April 16 and was stranded because of the eruption. He asked for a three day postponement, which was refused by the organisers on April 19. Anand finally reached Sofia on April 20, after a 40-hour road journey.^[4] The first game was consequently delayed by one day.^[5]

The move 16...Nc5 removing White's blockading knight was much better for Topalov, with Black doing well after 17.Nd6 b6.^[23] Anand noted that Black started to lose his grip on the position after 25... Ne3?^{[citation needed]}

14. ... Rg8! Black plans Bd6, Ke7, f6, Rgc8, Bg8, etc. White actually has to hurry up and do something against it, which is not easy, since his knight on c3 is misplaced.
20.b4! Topalov actives quickly before Black manages to get all his pieces into play.
32. ... Bb5! Anand manages to neutralize his only weakness, the pawn on a6.^[24]
There was no handshake at the end of the third game. At the press conference both players admitted that they simply forgot to shake hands.^[25]

10.Na3! Is a strong novelty. Anand just wants to develop without winning back the pawn. Now, in order to protect the pawn, Black is forced to place his pieces in awkward positions. The day before the fourth game, the 10.Na3! novelty was independently found by team of Levon Aronian, who was at that time carrying out a training camp in Armenia.^[26]
At 15.d5! Anand is finally ready and starts his breakthrough attack.
21. ... Qa7? A decisive mistake. Now the queen is saved, but the king is not. 21...Qg5! was already the only way to stay in the game. Anand quickly found the proper reply with 22.Ng4! starting the final attack on Black's king.^[24]

Anand repeated the Slav line with which he defended in game three. He deviated with 15...h5 to avoid having his light-squared bishop boxed in.^[27] The event suffered a power outage for thirteen minutes while Anand contemplated his 17th move;^[28] the organizers later apologized for this mishap, which was caused by an electrical system failure in central Sofia.^[27]

11. ... Bd7 is a novelty, as in Gelfand-Ivanchuk, Amber (blindfold) 2010, Ivanchuk had played 11...Ba6.
At move 21. Kh1 Anand finally managed to push Topalov out of his prepared line, having spent over an hour on his clock compared to Topalov having spent only 3 minutes.
25. ... Bb4! 26.Ra1! Topalov played a poisoned move and Anand finds the only response. Other moves such as 26.Ne4 would fail to 26...Bxc3 27.bxc3 f5 28.Nd6 Qc5 29.Rxg7+ Kxg7 30.Nxe8+ Kf7^[29]

Black's 54... Bc6?? was a blunder that removed the possibility of Black protecting the h7 pawn with his bishop. The move 54... Bd3 would have been an easy draw.^[30]
Though the game appeared to finish early, it might have concluded: 56.g4 Bd7 57.g5 Be8 58.Bg7 Bd7 59.g6 hxg6 60.Kxg6 and Black is helpless to prevent White from penetrating, for example: 60...Be8+ 61.Kf6 Bd7 62.Ke7 Bc6 63.d7 Bxd7 64.Kxd7 Kxg7 65.Kxe6.1–0^[31]

Anand moved 40. Rh8+?, hoping to repeat moves in order to make time control. However, this a mistake that lets the Black king escape. It was better to play 40. Re4 b4 41. Rxa7 b3 42. Rb7 b2 43. Kh2 Qc1 44. Ra4 Nd7 45. Rab4.
Anand missed a chance to win when he played 64. Kg3?. A winning move was 64. Rdd7 a3 65. Kg3 Qa1 (65...b2 66. Rc7+ Kd8 67. Ra7 Qd5 68. Ra8+ Qxa8 69. Rg8+ Kd7 70. Rxa8) 66. Rc7+ Kb8 67. Rb7+ Ka8 68. Nxb3.^[32]

This was the only win for Black in the match. Anand's choice of Lasker's Defense in the Queen's Gambit Declined appeared to signal his willingness to accept a draw, which would have tied the match at 6–6 and forced a rapid chess playoff. Most people believed that such a playoff would have greatly favored Anand, due to his superior rapid chess resume, and Topalov in the postgame press conference noted his desire to avoid a rapid playoff,^[35] given his loss in the World Chess Championship 2006 playoff to Vladimir Kramnik.^[36]
Consequently, Topalov chose to play for complications, but Anand's 16...Nf6!? allowed Anand active piece play in return for his weak pawn on c5.
After Topalov responded to 30...f5! with 31. exf5? e4! 32. fxe4??, Anand decisively seized the initiative. Topalov admitted he had overlooked Anand's strong reply 34. ... Qe8!^[22]

Algebraic chess notation

Algebraic chess notation is used to record and describe the moves in a game of chess. It is now standard among all chess organizations and most books, magazines, and newspapers. In English-speaking countries, it replaced the parallel system of descriptive chess notation, which became common in the 19th century, and which was sporadically used as recently as the 1980s or 1990s. European countries, except England, used algebraic notation before the period when descriptive notation was common.^[1]

Algebraic notation is based on a system developed by Philipp Stamma. It exists in various forms and languages, as will be described below. Stamma's system used the modern names of the squares but he used "p" for all pawn moves and the original file ("a" through "h") of the piece instead of the initial letter of the piece.^[2]

[edit] Naming squares on the board

Each square of the chessboard is identified with a unique pair of a letter and a number. The vertical files are labeled a through h, from White's left (i.e. the queenside) to his right. Similarly, the horizontal ranks are numbered from 1 to 8, starting from White's home rank. Each square of the board, then, is uniquely identified by its file letter and rank number. The white king, for example, starts the game on square e1. The black knight on b8 can move to a6 and c6. Chess notations are a way to determine any unique point on the board.

Each type of piece (other than pawns) is identified by an uppercase letter, usually the first letter in the name of that piece in whatever language is spoken by the player recording. English-speaking players use K for king, Q for queen, R for rook, B for bishop and N for knight (since K is already used). S was also used for the knight in the early days of algebraic notation, from the German Springer (this is still used in chess problems, where N stands for the popular fairy chess piece, the nightrider).
Players may use different letters in other languages. For example, French players use F for bishop (from fou). In chess literature written for an international audience, the language-specific letters are replaced by universal icons for the pieces, producing figurine notation.
Pawns are not indicated by a letter, but by the absence of such a letter—it is not necessary to distinguish between pawns for normal moves, as only one pawn can move to any one square (captures are indicated differently; see below).

[edit] Notation for moves

Each move of a piece is indicated by the piece's letter, plus the coordinate of the destination square. For example Be5 (move a bishop to e5), Nf3 (move a knight to f3), c5 (move a pawn to c5—no initial in the case of pawn moves). In some publications, the pieces are indicated by graphical representations rather than by initials: for example, ♞c6. This is called figurine algebraic notation or FAN and has the advantage of being language-independent.

When a piece makes a capture, an x is inserted between the initial and the destination square. For example, Bxe5 (bishop captures the piece on e5). When a pawn makes a capture, the file from which the pawn departed is used in place of a piece initial. For example, exd5 (pawn on the e-file captures the piece on d5). The x is often omitted: ed5. A colon (:) is sometimes used instead of an x, either in the same place the x would go (B:e5) or after the move (Be5:). When it is unambiguous, a pawn capture is often indicated only by the files: exd or ed.
En passant captures are specified by the capturing pawn's file of departure, the x, and the square to which it moves (not the location of the captured pawn), followed by the a suffix of "e.p." to indicate an en passant capture.^[3]
Some texts, such as the Encyclopedia of Chess Openings, omit indications that a capture has been made.

[edit] Disambiguating moves

If two (or more) identical pieces can move to the same square, the piece's initial is followed by (in descending order of preference):

the file of departure if they differ;
the rank of departure if the files are the same but the ranks differ;
Both the rank and file if neither alone uniquely defines the piece (after a pawn promotion, if three or more of the same piece are able to reach the square).

For example, with two knights on g1 and d2, either of which might move to f3, the move is indicated as Ngf3 or Ndf3, as appropriate. With two knights on g5 and g1, the moves are N5f3 or N1f3. As above, an x may be used to indicate a capture: for example, N5xf3.

[edit] Pawn promotion

If a pawn moves to its last rank, achieving promotion, the piece chosen is indicated after the move, for example e1Q, b8B. Sometimes an "=" sign or parentheses are used: f8=N or a1 (R), but neither is a FIDE standard. (An "=" is written on the scoresheet next to the move to indicate an offer of a draw, but this is not part of algebraic notation.^[4]) In Portable Game Notation (PGN), pawn promotion is always indicated by a suffixed "=" and the piece chosen. Pawn promotions can also be found with a "/" symbol in older books. For example g8/Q could be used to indicate promotion to a Queen.

Castling is indicated by the special notations 0-0 for kingside castling and 0-0-0 for queenside. Note that while the FIDE Handbook, appendix E-13 uses the digit zero, PGN requires O-O and O-O-O instead, using an upper-case letter O.

A move which places the opponent's king in check usually has the notation "+" added. Some use a dagger: "†". (Sometimes ch is used to indicate check.) Double check is sometimes represented "++". Checkmate can likewise be indicated "#" (some use "++" instead, but the United States Chess Federation recommends "#"). Sometimes the double dagger ("‡") is used. The word 'mate' written at the end of the notation is also acceptable. The Encyclopedia of Chess Openings does not indicate check.

The notation 1-0 at the end of the moves indicates that white won, 0-1 indicates that black won, and ½-½ indicates a draw. Often there is no special indication of how a player won (other than checkmate, see above), so simply "1-0" or "0-1" may be written to show that one player resigned or lost because of time control. Sometimes the word "Resigns" (or "White resigns" or "Black resigns" as appropriate) is used to show this.

Lists of moves are generally written in one of two ways.

An ellipsis is also used when a score starts with a Black move (when the score is not of a complete game but starts from a given position). However, helpmates usually use an opposite convention; Black moves first by default and White moves are indicated with an ellipsis if no Black move precedes.

This is Kasparov versus the World, a game played by Garry Kasparov (as white) over the internet against the rest of the world (playing black), with the World's moves being chosen by popular vote under the guidance of a team of grandmasters. How to Learn Chess Endgame Strategies

Accept that the endgame is less available for memorization than the opening. Because you cannot predict exactly which pieces will be on the board and where, you won't be able to memorize a stock position and moves. Instead, understand that the endgame is flexible and requires different learning methods.

Realize that, while you can't memorize a bunch of endgame moves, you can learn strategies to move amongst 4 or 5 pieces (rather than all 32). By evaluating your own strengths and the value of your opponent's pieces, you can assess the situation and decide what course of action to follow.

Know your strongest pieces. While the bishop and knight are equally valued, know which one you are more comfortable using. If you can retain at least one of your strongest pieces for the endgame, you may secure a distinct advantage.

Maintain the defense of your own king as long as possible. Especially if your opponent has fewer pieces than you do to protect his king, don't neglect your own defense. In the end, you may require all of your pieces, but give yourself time to strategize by preserving your own defensive structure as long as possible.

Research and practice special cases, such as situations where single pieces are pitted against one another. While you can't memorize entire endgames, you can learn how to take advantage of certain pairings.

Learn how to take advantage of a pawn in the endgame. While promoting the pawn is a great goal that can lend extreme advantage, if you focus all of your energy on promoting you may actually give up the advantage before you achieve the promotion. Learn how to use the pawn, both by promoting it while still maintaining your defense, as well as by using it as a defensive or offensive piece itself.

First, you have to understand two things. A) This is only an opening strategy, and is more of a defense oriented than attack B) It will not win every game of chess for you, especially if its all you know how to do, or are against a skilled opponent. This is for people who have other strategies to use as well. The whole point of this is to put your king into the best defensive position possible.

Assuming you're the white side, start by moving your Pawn at D2 to D4.

Next, move your Kings Knight from G1 to either F3 or H3, this is solely preference.

Now Castle your King with your Rook. This should leave your Rook at F1, and your King at G1. Your King is now in an excellent defensive position, and so ends this strategy.

It’s actually not that hard to think a couple of moves ahead in Chess, even for a beginner. A player should always make a move that gives them a strategic advantage.

This also goes for your opponent. Let’s say an opponent moves a piece into the firing line of one of your pieces. Do not quickly assume that your opponent is an idiot, and take the piece. Think to yourself, why did they do that? Is it a trap? If I don’t take that piece, can I make a better move that would give me a better strategic advantage? If you’ve answered yes to any of these questions, you have actually thought a number of moves ahead.

The video above shows just how important strategy can be at the elite level.
Chess strategy is the difference between a good chess player and a great chess player. There are many books, videos, tutorials and websites that focus solely on chess strategy. Some can be found here.
There are a couple of concepts that the beginner should take time to learn:

Protect your King.
When checked, you will most likely be forced into making a move you weren’t planning on making.
Advance your pieces.
Every move you make should be aimed at placing a piece into a better attacking position. If you attack, attack, attack, your opponent is forced to defend, defend, defend/
Own the center.
If you can place some pieces into the center of the board, and defend them with other pieces, this effectively gives you control of the center. Your opponent will be limited to advancing down the sides, thus limiting the effectiveness of any attacking piece.
Sacrifice if required.
This sounds counter intuitive, but it may be of strategic advantage to relinquish a piece to bring an opponents piece out into the open.

Just when you thought we’d finished covering piece movement, a couple more rise from the deep. There are a couple of advanced movements that can be performed.

Pawn Promotion

Remember that a Pawn can only move forward? What happens if a Pawn reaches the other end of the board? Actually, the Pawn can be promoted to any other piece, other than a King. The Pawn is removed from the board, and replaced with another piece.
Some people play a rule that states a Pawn can only advance into a piece that has already been taken from the board. This is generally played as most chess sets do not have spare pieces.

Castling

Castling is often used to provide additional protection for the King, or to bring the Rook into a more offensive position. Beginners may avoid castling for there first few games. To paraphrase the narrator of the video, Castling involves one Rook and a King. Both the King and the Rook must not have moved. There must be no pieces between the King and the Rook. When castling, the King must not be in check, or pass through check.

En Passant

En Passant may be invoked when a Pawn moves two squares on the first move. If the opponent has a piece attacking the first square the Pawn moves through, the opponent can remove the Pawn and place the attacking piece in the first square. Sound a bit confusing? As a beginner, don’t worry too much about this. Beginners have the unwritten right to to not play any rules they do not understand.

A Chess Myth or Two

Let’s start off by exposing a few myths that often stop beginner chess players from picking up their first pawn:

Chess can only be played by tea-touting, IQ celebrating, super brains.
Chess only has a few basic rules and beginners generally find it easy to learn. Chess is however hard to champion as mastering strategy is often a life long endeavour. In later lessons we introduce basic beginner chess strategy, so don’t worry too much at this point.
Chess is soooo boring…
Actually, a great game of chess is both extremely exciting and nerve wracking. Beginners with a heart condition have been warned.
A single chess game is so long that play is normally passed down from generation to generation.
A chess game is as long as you want it to be. You can impose time limits or resign at any point. Most beginners chess games will last no longer than half an hour.

It’s A Beginners Chess Game

Beginners should try to find another beginner chess player to learn chess with. Once the rules are learned, and some basic strategy imprinted, mano-a-mano of the beginner kind is much more fun than taking on a chess champion.

So What’s the Aim of Chess Anyway?

The aim of chess is to force the King to surrender. This is often achieved through diligent use of strategy. Beginner beware… the aim is not to kill as many of your opponent’s pieces as possible.
Every move, every piece taken, every trap set, every piece lost should be part of an overall strategy. In a good game of chess, moving without purpose is often cruelly punished. We’ll introduce you to beginners basic strategy a little further on.

The King can move one square in any direction. The diagram on the right shows the Kings starting point and all the possible positions he can move into. Note that the King is white. If any of the marked squares are occupied by another white piece, the King can not move into it. Two pieces can not share the same square. This is true for all pieces. Beginners may note that the King is one of the weakest pieces on the board.

The Rook can move any number of squares in the horizontal or vertical direction. It is moved by sliding it along the board in the chosen direction. Beginners must move in one direction only. The Rook may move into any of the marked squares, however, a Rook can not jump over another piece.

The Bishop may move any number of squares diagonally in any direction. Think of the Bishop as a Rook tilted 45 degrees… all the same rules apply. Beginners may note that being stuck on a 45 degree angle means that the Bishop must always remain on the same color.

The Queen can move any number of squares horizontally, vertically, or diagonally. A Queen can not jump. It is easy to see that a Queen is one of the most prized pieces. The beginner chess player should always try to safe-guard their Queen, as she is often called upon to defend the King. It is tempting to use the Queen as a powerful offensive piece, but this puts her at considerable risk.

The Pawn can only move one square forward at a time. However, to speed up the opening game, pawns are allowed to move two forward squares on their very first move. They can not jump another piece however during this move.

The Knight is the only piece that can jump. It can not move in straight lines though. A Knight must move in an L-pattern. Beginners often find this is a bit tricky to grasp. Knights move two squares up, then one square over, or two squares over and one up, or any combination thereof. A Knight must land on a different colored square. The beginner chess player is advised to practice moving the Knight. Memorize the picture to the right.

Whose Turn is it Anyway?

So now you feel like you are most learned beginner in the world. You know the name of each chess piece, how each chess piece moves and where each piece is initially located on the chess board. You have an opponent (preferably another beginner), and you are rearing to go. So now what?
White always makes the first turn. If you are not white, don’t worry too much as it has been proven that starting a chess game has no significant advantage. To play a turn, you simply move one piece. Your turn ends when you have finished moving that one piece. Your opponent then takes a turn and so on until the game ends.
There are a couple of rules that some people like to play:

As soon as you touch a piece, you must move that piece if you can legally do so. A legal move is of course a move made by a piece that it is allowed to do.
After you lift your hand from the piece, and you have made a legal move, your turn ends.
Once your turn ends, you can not ask to take your turn back.

First lets start by setting up the chess board. There are eight white pawns and eight black pawns, line them up on the second and seventh rows of your chess board. Now the rooks, there are four of them, two white rooks and two black rooks, and they go into the four corners. Now the knights, there are four of them too, and they get placed next to the rooks. My son Andrew was interested in chess when he was a bit over 5 years old and at that time my chess knowledge was zero. I thought it was an interesting project if I could learn chess together with him so I went to the Vancouver library and borrowed a few chess books and started to teach him chess by reading those chess books.

Once he learned chess moves, we played games together. Perhaps it was because I could teach end game in separate and independent topics, Andrew learned the end game first. Initially I had to study the moves of all kinds of end game tactics first before I could teach him, but gradually I could not study fast enough to teach him so I had to ask him to study with me together by using a method that is I read the book and he made all the moves according book instructions, the end result was often he understood the meaning but I was still trying to piece all the information together.

Now I have taught many young children chess and many of them are even as young as 4 years, I was able to observe how Andrew or some strong players behaved differently form other weak players at the very young similar age. My personal observations of strong young players are they possess the following characteristics:

1.     Can grasp the chess ideas very quickly whether it is theory or tactics.
2.     Incredible good memory and can remember the variations of opening lines very deep.
3.     Are very much interested in playing and thoroughly enjoyed it.
4.     Have a sharp eye in seeing tactics and also the results of what if etc.
5.     Have patience in finishing playing a game from the beginning to the end despite the end result might be a loss.
6.     Is more willing to think alternate moves before making a move.

Only after learning chess a few months, Andrew was able to make fast progress and at that time I knew I need someone else to help him to advance to a higher level. At the same time, I was trying to find him a chess clubs but in the 1990’s era, there was no junior chess club in Vancouver so I had to bring him to the Senior Chess Club in Kerrisdale. A few of seniors showed some discomfort in playing such a young boy although a retied medical doctor showed tremendous interest in playing Andrew and the doctor took all the time he needed to make a move (no clock was used) when played against Andrew. Perhaps because of this, Andrew was trained to be patient when playing chess at such earlier age – Andrew was a bit over 6 years old.

Quickly we realized that we need to find a place so Andrew could continue to hone his skills, UBC (University of British Columbia) Tuesday night chess tournament was a perfect place since he gained so many points by going to UBC Tuesday night and played against adults. At this point, there was no benefit for Andrew to play against other children since Andrew was already in different league.

What troubled me the most was I could not find anyone who I personally feel could teach Andrew to bring him to the next level or perhaps to the world chess competition level. The problems I found with most the chess coaches at that time were the following:

1.     They all had their pet openings in mind and could not teach other lines well if Andrew was interested in learning other lines, so it might be beneficial for Andrew just to buy chess books and learn from books.
2.     Most teaching are not structured well enough so Andrew could see the whole picture, instead a piece meal fashion way of teaching was conducted so the effect is Andrew would not be well and thoroughly trained.
3.     No experience or idea on how to train a young child to bring him to the world stage.
4.     No training plan is in place but rely on casual presentation of personal past accumulated chess knowledge or experience.
5.     No analysis on what opening style is suitable for Andrew to play.
6.     Most chess coaches did not even prepare for the lesson but were only interested in playing a few games.

After going to a few different chess coaches, I was at loss to find a way to educate Andrew so he could continue to progress. One day, an idea clicked in my mind, that is if those chess grand masters are so good in chess and their games are all publicized then why don’t I analyze their games and study what opening lines they used and Andrew simply could learn from those grand masters by using the criteria of how they play well or not when using those lines?

Without a chess coach, how did I train Andrew to reach the world competition levels in 1990s? Not meant to exhaust listing my ways of helping Andrew, I did all the followings:

·       Bought chess video tapes.
·       Corresponded with some retired chess grand masters.
·       Studied on how Chinese trained their young chess players by reading Chinese chess magazines.
·       Subscribed all major chess magazines.
·       Analyzed how some grand chess masters became masters and how they were trained when they were young.
·       Bough all good chess books on openings which I though will be good for Andrew.
·       Bough computer chess software and PC so Andrew could play and practice chess 7/24.
·       Browsed on internet to find out how other countries trained their young chess players.

After did all the above, I concluded that Andrew must be so good at some open theories that he could perhaps claim to be an expert in some opening lines. So what the chance an average chess player could beat a player who is more or less an expert in some opening lines when the average player is “forced” to play the expert’s open line? This had become Andrew focal training point without hiring a chess coach. The beauty is this training method can be done anywhere and anytime as long as there is a computer and chess book around. At competitive level, if one could win at the opening, basically it is a boost psychologically.

When training Andrew, I faced another difficulty that is to try to find the answer for “what if” question at the opening. Too much time is wasted to find a solution when facing an unfamiliar opening line. Because of this reason, I studied all the opening lines by using 2 most popular chess openings books in the earlier years of 1990: Modern Chess Openings and Batsford Chess Openings 2 to find all the main variations that Andrew would play when facing different openings. The end product of his opening lines is all variations were drawn on a sheet with the area size covering the surface of an office desk. In Andrew’s mind, he has a repertoire of what he will do if his opponent plays certain lines. He is so well prepared on “what if” variations of opening.

Andrew was one time dubbed as “terminator” if he played his pet opening since most chess players in Vancouver just did not have the expertise when facing the openings which Andrew has trained to play.

Am I advocating to teach children to play chess without a coach? Certainly not. A good coach will save one’s time and the road to success is actually shortened. But on the other hand, what if one just can not find a good coach? In this condition what can a child do if he or she would like to become a chess master? My way of training Andrew so he later became the youngest Canadian Junior chess champion and a FIDE chess master and a Canadian chess master could be a way of training a child to become a chess master.

What would I do differently if given the time machine to revert back? What I would do is perhaps not to spend so much time to train Andrew chess to the world stage to compete, instead take some time away to also advance his math knowledge. By doing this, math will help Andrew in his academics directly and all the way to university. This is also one of the reasons that I got into math and chess integrated teaching and also founded math and chess learning centre so children could learn chess and math at the same time.

Checkmate! Played by humans and computers, in person and via correspondence, chess is one of those games that takes a minute to learn, but a lifetime to master. The first step on that lifelong journey is learning the basic rules of chess. More advanced rules and tactics are built on that foundation.
The Setup:
Two players face each other on opposite sides of a chess board. Each color has sixteen pieces: eight pawns, two rooks, two knights, two bishops, a queen, and a king. The object of the game is to capture enemy pieces while protecting your own, all in the effort to 'checkmate' the King.
Each player places all his pawns in his second row. The rooks are placed on the corners, followed by knights, and then bishops. The queen is placed 'on her color,' and the King is placed in the final spot.
The Moves:
White starts first. When white moves one piece, it is black's turn, and so on. Each piece is restricted in its movement. A piece (except the knight) cannot move through any other piece, nor can it end its turn sharing a space with a friend. If the piece ends its turn on an enemy's square, that enemy has been 'captured' and removed from the game. The capturing piece then replaces it.
Pawns: The pawn is a special piece. On its first move, a pawn can move either two or one spaces. On all other moves, it can only move one space forward. However, it can only capture diagonally. It also cannot move backward. Thus, if the pawn is blocked, it can no longer move forward. If a pawn moves to the last row on the opponent's side of the board, it is 'promoted' into any other piece (except a King).
Rooks: The rook can move any number of spaces forward, backward, or to the side.
Bishops: The bishop can move any number of spaces diagonally.
Knights: The Knight has a unique movement pattern. It moves in "L" shapes - various combinations of two spaces and one space. For example, a knight could move two to the left and one up; two up and one to the right; or one to the right and two down. The Knight can also jump over any pieces to reach its destination.
The Queen: The Queen is the best piece, as it can move any number of spaces forward, backward, to the side, or diagonally.
The King: This piece must be protected at all costs. It can only move one space in any direction. If the King is placed in 'check,' (i.e. the opponent is threatening to capture this piece next turn) you must move it or otherwise disrupt the check. If the check cannot be broken, it is a "checkmate," and the attacking player wins!

Can anything really be learned by having a student play chess against computer opponents? Many people believe that playing chess is a purely human skill. After all, the ability to formulate a plan and execute it against thinking opposition is one of the primary markers that defines us as human, or Homo Sapiens. The problem with this idea is that the top chess grandmaster in the world (Gary Kasparov) was beaten by a computer several years ago. The idea that computers have nothing to teach us about chess is quite wrong. While computer chess programs have as yet quite poor strategic thinking, they do excel in tactical awareness. For a player under a playing strength of Elo 2000 tactical awareness is probably one area in which they can gain the most benefit from the least effort and as we have already seen chess programs are already stronger in this area than any human teacher.
Playing strength in chess is determined by many things but at the lower end of the spectrum it is largely dictated by two factors only - tactical awareness and avoiding blunders. Of course knowledge of opening theory plays a role but please note that I do not here say that opening knowledge is important - opening knowledge is a different thing altogether. Far too many beginners spend too long attempting to memorise openings by rote with little understanding of why the pieces should be moved in a particular fashion already. If a beginner develops sound tactical awareness and avoids blunders they will grow in strength rapidly.
Providing a beginner has knowledge of basic chess tactics such as pins, skewers, overloading and so on, then a chess program can teach them to improve and develop this aspect of their game in a rapidly increasing manner. Some programs will show pieces under threat whilst playing in tutorial mode, others will allow takes back of poor moves or open a window where an electronic coach will offer "hints" to the player so they can avoid a poor move and so on.
The really great thing about a chess computer though is that it can often be set to play at a particular level of ability and will play like that relentlessly. If the machine is set to play slightly stronger (roughly 100-200 Elo) than the player then it is still possible for the player to win, but only if they concentrate and avoid blunders. This will focus the mind wonderfully and it will also instruct the player rapidly as they will always be playing against stronger opposition.
Overall a chess computer can be an exceptionally useful instructional tool, but only if applied in the correct fashion. So, is it possible to improve tactical understanding by playing chess against computer opponents? Of course and today even the grandmasters are doing it.

1. Double Threat

One of the most important ideas in chess is the double threat. Generally speaking a double threat is any move you make that presents your opponent with two problems at the same time. Since each player can make just one move per turn, your opponent only has time to address one of the threats you have made.

On your next turn you execute the other one. Maybe your first move checks his king and attacks another of his pieces at the same time; or maybe you threaten one of his pieces and are building a threat of checkmate elsewhere. The result is the same: your opponent has to spend his next move dealing with your threat against his king, and then you get to take the other piece you were threatening.

2. Loose Piece

Another key idea in chess is the loose piece. A loose piece is simply a piece that has no protection. It is common for players to leave pieces unprotected here and there; as long as they aren't being attacked, they look safe enough. But loose pieces make perfect targets for the double threats described a moment ago.

Suppose your queen performs a fork, attacking your opponent's king and one of his rooks at the same time. He moves his king. Now you can use your queen to take his rook-if it is unprotected. But if the rook is guarded you won't be able to take it because the cost will be too high: your queen will be captured afterwards.

We can turn this point into advice for practical play. You want to be aware of loose pieces on the board at all times. Any piece your opponent has left unguarded is a possible target for a tactical strike; any piece of yours that is left unguarded is a vulnerability. Indeed, you want to not only notice loose enemy pieces but also look for ways to create them.

3. Forcing Moves

Checks, captures, and mate threats therefore are known as forcing moves. In other words, they are moves that force your opponent to pick from a small set of possible replies. They are the essence of tactical chess; they allow you to dictate your opponent's moves and thus control how the board will look two or three or more moves from now.

Sometimes in chess you do whatever you want to do and then your opponent does whatever he wants to do. Other times it's different: if you capture his knight with your bishop, for example, he pretty much has to recapture your bishop; otherwise he simply is short a piece and probably will lose. (The other pieces belonging to both sides gradually will be exchanged away, and you will end up with the only attacking piece left on the board.)

Another example: If you check your opponent's king, he can't do whatever he wants in reply; he has to either move the king, block the check, or capture the piece you have used to make the threat. And if you make a move that will enable you to deliver checkmate on your next turn-a "mating threat"-your opponent likewise will have to address it immediately.

These are just a small few tips and tactics to help you play better chess. So next time you get into a game with your buddy, try to employ these and you might find yourself with a win under your belt.
