Kaniez Abdi specialises in innovative textile designs and products for both the fashion and interior design industry.

Also attending 100% Design were Dina and Oliver, from Morocco, representing designer Mark Finzel, supplier of distinctive fabrics, laminates and wallpapers.

I thoroughly enjoyed my time with Dina and Oliver. However, I talked to Oliver for 15 minutes, during which time he continually smiled and nodded his head, when it suddenly became apparent to me that he didn't speak a word of English. Luckily Dina was at hand to translate.

Chichi - The Rocking Piano

Sarah Davenport and her mum 'Mig' worked tirelessly throughout the show, presenting Chichi - the Rocking Piano. Chichi was reintroduced to Designersblock following a two year travel around the country and originates from Nottingham.

A wide variety of visitors were allowed free reign to rock and play the piano and over the 4 days a fantastic atmosphere was created within Designersblock.

Whilst characters Betty Draper & Joan Holloway will inspire new ladylike fashions (note to self: buy a pill box hat!)…the powerful 1960’s New York backdrop will be sure to inspire interior design schemes and product styling.

Todays interior trend for Autumn/Winter 2009/10 offers an abundance of fabulous patterns inspired by the reworking and recolouring of classic floral patterns, forest & field inspiration and classic men’s suiting fabrics e.g. tweed, herringbone, plaids and most importantly Houndstooth!

Influences: Looking back over recent history to identify a period of economic hardship that swept across Europe our minds turn to World War II and 1940’s rationing. It is a period that serves to remind us of people’s determined resilience and that we are often at our most innovative, creative and resourceful during hard times.

The spirit of the Women’s Land Army and the creativity of the average woman in the home in the 1940’s is central to this trend. Their inventiveness reminds us that simplicity and practicality does not have to come at the expense of style, as we plough through the current period of recession and continue our efforts to monitor consumption and consumerism.

All of these aspects inspire an colour palette that is refreshed during Autumn/Winter 2009/10 by the inclusion of ginger, whilst mossy greens now have a slight blue tint reminiscent of the blue spruce tree. Shades of beetroot, rich soil and sweet potato return us to the land.

Eastern Mosaics

Kevin Dean is a graduate from the Royal College of Art. He has illustrated numerous publications, designed textiles, murals and decorations for architecture.

Working with Fantini Mosaici of Milan, Kevin has created a unique floral design for the marble floor of the 18,000 sq m Sahan or courtyard in The Grand Mosque Abu Dhabi. He also designed other large floors and archways within the mosque in collaboration with the international architects Spatium, Milan. The Grand Mosque opened in March 2008.

UPDATE

On the 6th September at London's Soho Theatre, it was announced that Kevin was one of the short-listed winners for the prestigious 2009 LICC (London International Creative Competition). Kevin will now be included in LICC's book, which is due to be sold worldwide.

ENAMELLED WALL ART

Ruth Ball's changing cityscape is the influence behind her latest series of enamel artwork. The images are currently based on landmarks and areas of renovation in and around Liverpool. Regeneration in the city, constructional structures, and architectural details are all the focus of attention. Even the incidental sections of man-made marks on walls & street pathways, provide an inspiration.

Ruth Ball utilises the fusion of glass on metal to produce a diverse collection of products, ranging in scale from contemporary jewellery & small objects, through to wall based art works. Pieces are made as "one-off's" or in small batches as limited editions, which are made to order.

Ruth is an active member of the British Society of Enamellers, and also involved with her local group Merseyside Jewellers and Metal Artists Network. Ruth regularly exhibits her work both in national and international exhibitions. As a self-employed designer enameller, she is skilled in all aspects of champleve, cloisonné and painted enamel. In conjunction to producing her own designs, she undertakes trade work, commissions, and is an experienced teacher at Further & Higher Education levels.
