Title: Under The Rose-Tainted Skies
Author: Louise Gornall
Publisher: Chicken House
My ratings: 4 out of 5 stars
Released: 7th July, 2016
Agoraphobia confines Norah to the house she shares with her mother.

For her, the outside is sky glimpsed through glass, or a gauntlet to run between home and car. But a chance encounter on the doorstep changes everything: Luke, her new neighbour. Norah is determined to be the girl she thinks Luke deserves: a ‘normal’ girl, her skies unfiltered by the lens of mental illness. Instead, her love and bravery opens a window to unexpected truths …

An important and uplifting debut from a British author, which tackles mental health issues such as agoraphobia and OCD.

If you are not intrigued yet, I have another card up my sleeve. I have managed to score a snippet of Louise and it is from when Norah first meets Luke. Read on.

***

'Can I help?' I can’t look up to see who’s talking to me because anxiety has my chin stapled to my chest, but when I flick my eyes left I can see his reflection in the window. It’s New Boy from next door. He has dimples, and a mop of shaggy dark hair falls casually over his left eye.

His feet meet, four steps, and my focus is free, running wild like a liberated stallion.

‘No. No, thank you.’ In context, this might be the dumbest thing I have ever said. ‘I mean . . .’ Deep breath. ‘I mean . . .’ What do I mean? I feel flushed, like I’ve just dipped my face in the centre of the sun.

Another breath as I stand up, back up, and steady myself against the door frame. I straighten my sweater, pulling it down and trying to cover everything above the soles of my feet. No amount of hugging my torso can hide the two giant teddies.

I can feel his eyes on me. Probably curious about my attire. Definitely confused as to why I’m fishing for grocery bags on my front porch.”

***

I warned you, you will be left asked for more. Well if you are, I have great news for you. I am giving away a copy of Under the Rose-Tainted Skies by Louise Gornall. UK Only. Enter away.
Title: These Shallow Graves
Author: Jennifer Donnelly
Publisher: Hot Key Books
My ratings: 4 out of 5 stars
Released: 5th, May 2016

I had been eyeing this book for a while as it has been
making the rounds on social media. Set
in Victorian New York it tells the story of Josephine Montford, whose gilded
world comes crashing down when her father is found dead. Belonging to an old
family, she is expected to marry the most eligible bachelor in New York. But
she simply can’t let go of the suspicious circumstances of her father’s
death. With the help of a young,
handsome reporter, she starts investigating her father’s death.

For some reason, I was expecting some paranormal elements in it and this book has none of it. However it ticks all the boxes. I really enjoyed the setting of the dark, gritty underbelly of Victorian New York and the contrast it set against the rich and influential world of Jo. The author expertly, was able to show the suffering of the poor but also life of the rich who had their own suffering but just hidden under the carpet of their beautiful mansions.

The romance was a slow burn and I was pleased how it did not take over the plot itself. My favourite part of the story was the main character, Jo. She is one who sees the most changes around her. Her father is dead, possibly murdered and she is determined to uncover the truth behind it. But the more she ventures in the world of the other half the harder she finds to shake it off her person. I simply loved how this experience changed her, evolved her into someone with a backbone of steel.

The only criticism I have for this book was that it slowed down in parts and being a nearly 500 page long book, it left longer. Oh and also, I had figured out the killer from the beginning of the story. Oops!

I would recommend this book to all fans of YA who like a thriller but this one is with a difference and a completely new flavour.

I’ll confess while I have read Nalini Singh’s Guild Hunter series, I have never read her more popular Psy-Changeling series which put her on the PNR map.

When given a chance to read this series, I grabbed this chance. I went in a little wearily as I’ve been burned by highly hyped books before. However, I’m pleased to report that no such thing happened with Slave to Sensation. I adored this book.

I really enjoyed the world building which was complex and intriguing. I was expecting a half-baked world which will help to bring the two main characters together. But what I found was beautifully done. The changelings and Psys came with their own society and social systems.

The chemistry between Lucas and Sacha was off the charts. Even from the first scene sparks were flying left right centre. Their chemistry and their push and pull relationship kept me glued. Plus their smexy scenes were hot. I mean fanning myself hot.

So if you call yourself a PNR fan and never read this series then I urge you not to be an idiot like me and pick this series. If you are not a PNR fan, but like smexy alpha males, then do yourselves a favour and pick this book. Better yet, read it, come back and tell me how much you liked it.

To make things even easier, (thanks to Orion Books) I’m giving away a copy of Slave to Sensation to get you started on your Psy-Changeling journey. Unfortunately, this is UK only. So start entering.
Series: Darkest London
Author: Kristen Callihan
Publisher: Piatkus, UK
My ratings: 5 out of 5 stars
Released: 26th August, 2014
Being quite particular about my Paranormal Romances, every time I pick a Darkest London Book, I know I will enjoy it. Kristen Callihan is my auto buy author and her Darkest London Books are PNR gems. (Read my review of Firelight, Moonglow and Shadowdance here, here and here)

Evernight is no different. Holly Evernight is a SOS operative with a genius and inventive mind. But her past catches up with her in the form of Will, the man whose heart she replaced with one of her inventions. While she is suffering from the affects of her abduction in the previous book, the deranged Will is determined to kill her. With a set up like this, how could I not be invested in this book.

This couple had been hinted in the previous book and even then I was rather intrigued by Will, the Sanguine Demon. Needless to say that he completely won me over in Evernight. He had a dirty mind and even dirtier tongue. Someone like him paired with the prim and composed Holly, promised to have fire and it delivers. I loved the fact that the only way Will could stave his madness by physically touching Holly. Ha! From the get go we had a touchy feel-y couple who almost hated each other. Filled will palpable sexual tension which will have you licking your lips, Evernight was extremely enjoyable.

I am amazed at how deftly Kristen Callihan has expanded the Darkest London world. It is even more incredible that it all started with a mysterious man with a mask. Archer will forever be my favourite hero written by her, even if Will came close, Archer will always have a special place in my heart.

If you a fan of Paranormal Romance, the Darkest London series is a must read. In fact if you haven't read a single book in this series I would ask if you have been living under a stone? Evernight has toe curling romance, awe inspiring world building and character who are not only complex but broken and real. Do yourself a favour and pick this series.

Released: 30th June, 2016
R eading Seed by Lisa Hetfield had been an experience and an eye opener for me. Tugging at my heart string the ending had left me wanting more. So I went in to Paper butterflies with a little trepidation and hope that she will blow my socks off with her writing. And I’m pleased to report she successfully does.

Paper Butterflies is the story of June who lives with her step mother and stepsister along with her busy father. On the surface it may look like a happy family, but it’s hiding dark secrets just under its surface. Amongst it all June’s ray of light in her life is Blister, her secret friend who belongs only to her and is untainted by her life.

I adored this book, in a way even more than Seed. It is clear that Lisa Heathfeild is coming into her own with her writing because each book is getting better than the last. I left the premise vague as I believe some of the emotions you feel from the plot is derived from the slow unveiling of June’s life.

Paper Butterflies is not for the faint hearted as it deal of a lot of issues life, racism, abuse, bullying and neglect. At many instances I found myself tearing up and getting angry, balling my fists and ready to exact some revenge on June’s behalf. I’m a person with coloured skin but fortunately I have never experienced racism or bullying yet.

But what is so special about this book you ask as there are a dime a dozen books with address similar themes you ask? Well, it’s the authors writing. She writes with such gentleness for her characters that I feel, she genuinely cares about them. Horrific events may occur to these characters but not once do I feel that the author is using it as a plot device instead she imbibes them with so much innocence despite the cruelty around them that it tears the reader apart. I truly feel that she is an expert in ‘showing’ instead of ‘telling’ and that is what digs a hole in your heart.

Overall, a fabulous, heart wrenching, throat clogging emotional storying which hits you where it hurts. A must read for anyone and everyone.
Title: The Problem with Forever
Author: Jennifer L . Armentrout
Publisher: Mira Ink, UK
My ratings: 4 out of 5 stars
Released: 1st June, 2016
T
he Problem with Forever is the story of Mallory and Rider. Having been grown up together as foster kids in a house where they were regularly abused and Rider was the one friend Mallory relied on. He saved her time and time again, getting the beatings himself, but saving Mallory each time. However, the two kids are separated and with a stroke of luck, Mallory is snow is a loving family who have adopted her. Now she is ready to finally start school again but fate has other plans and she ends up meeting Rider again on her first day at school. Now that they have reunited, how will Mallory and Rider’s lives pan out from this moment on.

As far as foraying into YA contemporary books goo, it was a good attempt. With a solid plot with characters which grow through the course of the book. The plot never slowed for me and Mallory’s struggle with herself felt genuine and real to me.

While the whole abused foster kids struggling to cope as teenagers premise sounds familiar if not clichéd, the author still managed to keep my attention in the book. It was not simply about what had happened to these children but how they slowly growing up and getting over what was done to them. While some tragic events happened I felt that not only Mallory but Rider did a whole lot of maturing.

Jennifer L Armentrout writes sexual tension like no other and The Problem with Forever was no exception. On a side note, what is the trend with strange character names? Who is called Rider these days? Unless, I’m totally out of it? Also, there is also a prospective romance between Ainsley and Hector which I am curious about.

Over all, it was a solid, heart-warming contemporary romance book, which despite having the neglected foster kids arc, managed to hook me in to the very last minute.
Author: Stephanie Kate Strohm
Publisher: Sky Pony Press
My ratings: 3 out of 5 stars
Released: 5th April, 2016
Ihonestly requested this book because I loved the cover and the premise seemed entertaining. And I'm pleased to say that's exactly what you get. Cass loves acting and performing. When she gets the chance she goes on a summer camp/ stage performance stint on Shakespeare's Taming of the Shrew.

I adored how the writer was able to recreate the story by Shakespeare and build it within the modern world. With the progression of the stage performance the romance between Cass and Drew develops. They have a bad start. Cass thinks that Drew is a a horrid piece of work, obnoxious and annoying, so to teach him a lesson, she decides
to re-enact the play she is doing in real life and Tame Drew. However, fate has other plans and soon Cass' feelings towards Drew changes.

It was a light, fun and entertaining read. It did not delve into anything deep but that's what I was looking for at that time.It was hilarious at some points and had me chuckling away.

Over all, a sweet read which will make the time fly and make your heart lighter.

Title: Flamecaster
Series: Shattered Realms
Author: Cinda williams Chima
Publisher: HarperCollins, USA
My ratings: 4 out of 5 stars
Released: 5th April, 2016
After reading so many reviews about Cinda Williams Chima, I was on tenterhooks to find out what the fuss was about. Flamecaster is a spin off series from her hugely popular Seven Realms series. Unfortunately this ignorant and busy reader hasn't had the time to read it. In fact this was the first time I've ever heard of it.

Regardless, I started this book with high hopes and was pleasantly surprised at the writing and the plot. The book starts with some shocking events (especially for fans of the Seven Realms) in our protagonists young lives which shapes them as young adults. Ash is determined to assassinate the King and Jenna is desperately trying to hold the rebellion against the King. The story is more complicated than that but it was not boring one single point.

The world building is all consuming and has all the hallmarks of a seasoned writer who knows it inside out. The characters multifaceted which kept the story moving. I was also surprised how much I was enjoying the book even without the essential (at least for me) romance. In fact my main complaint is about the romance. I'm sorry to say that it has insta-love of the worst kind. Believe it or not they were kissing by their second meeting! That had me shaking my head as I did not expect an acclaimed author taking that route. I felt they had absolute no chemistry. In fact I felt that Ash and Lila had more chemistry.

All over it is a treat for any fantasy fans with plenty of fantasy elements, evil kings, mysterious foreign ambassador, assassins parading as healers, mages and dragons.

Title: And I Darken
Series: The Conquerors Saga
Author: Kristen White
Publisher: Penguin Random House, UK
My ratings: 5 out of 5 stars
Released: 7th July, 2016
A And I Darken, is one of those rare breed of YA stories that makes you sit up and pay attention. Set in Eastern Europe in a time where not many books are set, it is more of a re-imagining of historical events than actual fantasy.

Imagine if Vlad the Impaler was not a man but a woman. How would the events unfold. We have Lada who is brutal, hard and vicious. And a delightful main character. I love this trend of dark heroines which brings a new flavour of heroines who are not just kick ass but are harsh and not afraid of embracing the darker side of life.

However, this story is not simply about Lada, but also follows her younger brother, Radu who is everything that Lada is not. Their relationship between them is convoluted and complex. Their love hate relationship had me on tenterhooks. Bring in Mehmed. Another complexity to these three peoples relationship and it is a recipe for the most festering, gritty and tortuous relationship I have ever read.

The story was a car crash I could not stop reading. The fierce wild Rada opposite the delicate, sly Radu set in an ever changing world of new religion and kingdoms, their abandonment shaped them as children and love and hatred kept changing them as adults.

This book explored so many aspects of life in the 500 years ago. What it means to be a woman? Is being physically strong the only way you can be powerful? Can you fight battles from court rooms? And what does it even mean to be an emperor? We had Rada hating her gender and trying her best to remove any form of feminity and loved that she discovers that sometimes being a women is how you fight your battles. While Radu was struggling with his own identity, his faith and his loyalties.

I hated the self-righteous Mehmed and I cannot explain the details without giving spoilers. What I can say is that this is one of the must read YA releases this summer, pushing the boundaries of YA story telling which will have you transfixed to the pages.
Title: A Court of Mist and Fury
Author: Sarah J Maas
Series: A Court of Thorns and Roses
Publisher: Bloomsbury Books, UK
My ratings: 3 out of 5 stars
Released: 2nd May , 2016
This is going to be my difficult review to date. And furthermore, this will contain spoilers for the previous book and this book. So if you don’t want to be spoilt, look away now. This could have possibly been the best book I've ever read but I have such mixed feelings about the events that took place in this book.

So in this edition, our newly changed Fae, Feyre is back in Spring Court but still reeling from the events in ACOTAR. She is suffering from PTSD and unfortunately so is Tamlin. While they are suffering the threat of Rhys coming to make good on this bargain with Feyre looms over them.

*Start of Rant (spoilers ahead)*

Right now comes the rant, so while Feyre and Tamlin are struggling, instead on talking they start drifting away. Feyre being the whiny person she is, starts resenting Tamlin his happiness of being reunited with his family and friends. He tries to protect her from dangers around her, which I admit he goes about the wrong way of doing, pisses Feyre off and she decides to leave for the Night Court.

My rant aside, the rest of book from this point is beautiful. I think S. J Maas is an author who really listens to her readers and tries to fulfil their requests. Unfortunately in this case, she changed the love interest. I had suspected something like this may be pulled off in this series as hints were scattered in the first book, but the way it was done, so quick and brutal that it left me feeling jarred. In the book, it occurs in the course of 5 months but while reading the book, it all happens in the first 15% of the book. For readers who loved ACOTAR, which was more romance than fantasy and especially if you reread it before ACOMAF, then it hurts. S. J Mass sold the whole story of the first book on the romance between Tamlin and Feyre and suddenly both of them behaving so out of character was not only disappointing but made me angry. SO angry that I had to stop reading for 2 days to give myself time to get in terms with it.

ACOTAR was sold to me as the TRUE LOVE story based on the Beauty and the Beast and it was delivered. Then it takes a U turn and goes in a completely new direction. Needless to say, I was really annoyed. In fact I was more than annoyed. Secondly , the new love interest is portrayed in a holier than thou light and it takes away all that mystery and edge that I loved in the first place. Worst of all, it was achieved but putting the first guy in a negative light. This is what annoyed me the most. Why does Tamlin have to be suddenly the bad guy? Why can’t they just drift away rather than make Tamlin act in way he never would have! At one point, I was ready to give up but with the hype surrounding it, I gave it a try and didn’t regret it.

*Rant Over*

It was everything and more I could have asked in a fantasy adventure. It was so beautifully written, with nee exciting characters and old characters given new dimension. Rhys was portrayed in a completely new light and the romance of utterly toe tingling. The chemistry between Rhys and Feyre was OFF. THE. CHARTS. The flirtations, the sexual tension, the interaction, the little notes, I died with pleasure each time (even if a little part felt unfaithful to Tamlin).

The new characters introduced added a wonderful layer to the story and as the story unfold, so does Feyre’s world and the Fearie World unveils more of it’s secrets. I also enjoyed how much more background information was included giving every character nuances which were lacking in the previous book.

If I’m honest most of the book lacked a solid plot and until the very end, not much really happens unless you count the amazing sex scenes. Yes, ACOMAF is not a YA and I’d definitely call it NA. S. J Mass outdid herself.

Regardless of the above issues and Feyre’s annoying habit of changing her mind and turning Rhys into another tortured hero who needs the right woman, the book was fabulous. It was excellent, addictive, exciting and delicious. It was book which compelled me to keep reading and while I wasn’t I occupied my dreams. How I wish, Tamlin was not declared the ‘True Love’ in ACOTAR.

ACOMAF is a must read for all fantasy fans. Hell, it’s a must read for all reader who love a great story which will have your running to the bookstore to the next book.
Title: Resurgence
Series: Silver Blackthorn

Author: Kerry Wilkinson
Publisher: Pan Macmillan, UK
My ratings: 4 out of 5 stars
Released: 5th May, 2016
A fter being impressed by the first two books in the Silver Blackthorn Trilogy, I was really looking forward the finale of this action packed, thrilling adventure.Read my review and blour tours for Reckoning and Renegade here, here and here.

The events in Renegade had the set up for Resurgence pat down and it was a fast paced adventure. Silver becomes the unlikely hero of these subjugated people while she is internally struggling with her own role in this rebellion. Her life has changed so much and it is evident as we see lots of character development.

What I enjoy most about this series has always been the friendships between the teens who suffered under the deranged king and his castle. Not just the friendships, but the relationships good or bad are nuanced and layered and a treat to read.

Some dystopian authors shy away from brutality and this fails to convince of the unfairness of a cruel regime. But I think this series is not only brutal but it encapsulates the misery and suffering of people so well, that the reader really starts rooting for this rag tag bunch of kids.

Of course, there is a vague love triangle but I was sure from the start, who the eventual winner of Silver’s heart was.

Kerry’s writing has always been spot on and he is quite clever with his plot devices and I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I will definitely recommend this series for readers who love dystopia and looking for a fix.
Series: The Winner’s Trilogy
Author: Marie Rutkoski
Publisher: Bloomsbury Kids, UK
My ratings: 5 out of 5 stars
Released: 24th March, 2016
S ince the day I read Marie Rutkoski’s The Winner’s Curse, I knew all her books were going to turn out as gems. I am smitten with this series and all her books in this series simply too good to be missed.

As this is the last book in this trilogy, the stakes are high and the tension is intense. With the ending like in The Winner’s Crime, I was hanging on edge for The Winner’s Kiss. I am pleased to say that this book was one of the best out of the Trilogy. It was beautifully written and the plotting was perfection.

One of the strengths of this book is its main protagonist Kestrel. Set in an imaginary waring world but with no magic or fantasy elements, I never thought I will enjoy a heroine who couldn’t fight in an essentially fantasy story. Smart and beautiful, I love the fact that even if she cannot fight, she can still defeat her enemies with just her wits. She goes to hell and back and yet her inner courage shines through.

Her romance with Arin is beautiful and touching. While the first book was romance focused and the second book more about Kestrel’s life at court and The Winner’s Kiss has equal measures of romance and action.

I’ll admit it’s a long book, and usually long books give me hives but on this occasion I wanted even more. I adore how Rutkoski uses such gentle approach to storytelling. A little is always more and I simply couldn’t get enough of Arin’s and Kestrel’s interactions like an artist’s soft brush strokes coaxing colour on to his painting. On the action front, I cannot tell you how good the climax was. The interchanging scenes between Kestrel and Arin struck all the right cords for me. Each of them facing their enemies when the consequences of losing were dire.

Overall, this book is utterly unmissable. With characters that will stay with you, plenty of plotting and scheming, a truly heart rendering romance and tension and thrills aplenty. I whole heartedly recommend this book. Don’t think twice, just try this book!
Title: Gameboard of the Gods
Series: Age of X
Author: Richelle Mead
My ratings: 4 out of 5 stars
Released: 4th June, 2013
Anything that Richelle Mead writes has always been enjoyable to me. However, mixed reviews for this series made me hesitate. I shouldn't have, as she reinstilled my faith in her. Gameboard Of the Gods is Mead's new adult series which I think has been her most ambitious yet.

While I have enjoyed her YA Vampire Academy series, I have always preferred her adult series. Georgina Kincaid series was my introduction into the world of urban fantasy and I never looked back. That series will always hold a dear place in my heart.

Gameboard of the Gods has an elaborate plot, world building and quite convoluted relationships and I wouldn't expect anything else from her. Without going too much into plot, the story is set in a futuristic version of North America where our main protagonists are Mae, a implant enhanced future super soldier and Justin, an exiled officer with questionable morals.

I admit it took me a little while to really get into the story but once I did I was wholly invested in it. Mead has a talent for writing in small clues throughout the story which beautifully comes together towards the end. But the best thing about Gameboard of the Gods was Mae. and Justin's relationship and both their personalities. Both of them are not exactly what you call good people. Selfish, rude and with eschewed morals (especially Justin) they make for an interesting pair. Their chemistry was off the charts and the whole forbidden attraction was played really well, which I may add this author is an expert in.

I had one complaint and this is about the narration. Emily Shaffer, the narrator did a great job of encompassing each character's personality but I wish she did male voices a little more huskier. While she managed to make Justin sound suitably flippant and cocky, his voice didn't sound any different from the female voice of Mae.

Overall, I'll recommend this book to all fantasy fans but will ask them to go in with an open mind and let the story take you. I seem to be in the minority who loved this book but I have a feeling if you go in not expecting Richelle Mead's usual style, you'll most certainly enjoy it.
Author: Marie Lu
Publisher: Penguin, UK
My ratings: 5 out of 5 stars
Released: 15th October, 2015
Last year I absolutely loved The Young Elites and the wait for The Rose Society felt torturous. But I am pleased to say, the wait was worth it.

The Young Elites ended not exactly on a cliff hanger but on the precipice of a new chapter in Adelina’s life. With an explosive climax in The Young Elites, the Rose Society begins with a steady pace leading to an end which blew my mind away. I do apologise for this reviews in advance, as it is difficult to write a cohesive review.

I won’t be delving into the premise as I don’t think it is needed. This book was dark, so very dark and from what I can see, the next book is going to be darker and I love it. This series has always been about our heroine (antiheroine?) Adelina and her journey as she grows into her power. From the discovery which I am sure will lead to her destruction. I love how she is not your typical sweet, nice YA heroine. Her evil(?) thoughts is atypical and at times seem selfish but I believe that makes her real. She is slowly growing in a villainous making me question my feelings and has me toen on what to root for.

We also see a return of old favourite characters and a few new ones which made thing all the more interesting. My favourite character was Terren in The Young Elites but now as Adelina slowly descends into a darker place, I think her selfishness us slowly making me like her more.

I know, it doesn’t make sense to me either. But I can guarantee that The Rose Society will have you teetering on the edge of your seats with its intricate, vast setting, and lush world building with characters which raises questions and offer more than just a good time. I did feel that the story lost it’s fast pace in the middle but the action towards the end more than made up for it. True to the previous book, The Rose Society also ended with nail biting tension making me scream for the next book. Highly recommended for all YA Fantasy fans.
Title: Rebel of the Sands
Series: Rebel of the Sands
Author: Alwyn Hamilton
Publisher: Faber, UK
My ratings: 5 out of 5 stars
Released: 4th Febuary, 2015
A setting of Wild West crossed with Arabian nights you say? Never in a million years had I thought that would work. While I have read my share of Wild West romances, the new trend of books appearing with a desert setting is new to me. Glowing reviews forced my hand and I had try this. And now I urge you, if you haven’t already, give this book a go.

Amani lives in a small village in the middle of nowhere where legends and myths abound. Wanting to have a better life and escaping her cruel uncle’s home, she will do anything to win her freedom. One thing leads to another and she manages to make an escape with an Outsider called Jin. Soon she is swept in what can only be called an adventure of epic proportions.

I know I’m being vague on purpose as I want readers to experience the plot and the setting for themselves. I loved the main heroine Amani, who felt edgy yet relatable. Her expertise with guns and her single minded determination to leave her life behind made her someone who I could root for. Yet throughout this book, she had to make difficult and sometimes selfish decisions but towards the end of the book, I could see how her experiences were shaping her and changing her.

Jin was so charming and mysterious that I pretty much loved him from the moment he appeared in the scene. He seemed wild and vagabond. For those looking for romance, Jin and Amani’s love story was a slow burn and the chemistry was off the charts. However, the winner in the book was the beautiful, mysterious desert setting, abound with Djinns and creatures of fire and legend.

If you like fantasy but have been disappointed by the recent disappointing releases, give Rebel of The Sands a go. A gun slinging heroine, a foreigner thief and an all sweeping romance and adventure where you can breathe the sand and feel the dry air licking you skin. Highly recommended one of the best books read in 2016 so far.

Title: Because of Miss Bridgerton
Series: Rokesby
Author: Julia Quinn
Publisher: Piatkus, UK
My ratings: 4 out of 5 stars
Released: 29th March, 2015
Whenever I fancy reading a quality regency romance, I know I can pick up a Julia Quinn books and it will deliver. However, due to commitments, reading Historical romances have been at the bottom of my reading list. I adore Julia Quinn and there is a reason why her books are popular. Not only are they swoony and romantic, they are utterly clever with witty rapid dialogue and vibrant characters her books keep me entertained to the very end.

Because of Miss Bridgerton was no exception. The Bridgerton series has been her most successful books and I was really excited about new Brigderton characters getting more HEA. Unfortunately, this book doesn’t feature Violet Bridgerton, the clan’s matriarch but introduces new character, Billie Bridgerton. She lives in the countryside and is somewhat of a tomboy. She has been befriends with their neighbours, the Rokesby. While she grew up with the Rokesby boys, everyone expects her to marry one of them eventually. But fate had other things in mind and after a cat, a sprain ankle, and a fall from a tree, she somehow finds herself having a strange attraction with the oldest Rokesby, George, whom she never got along.

We have a classic hate to love relationship, but calling it ‘hatred’ is taking it a little too far. Both our main characters have never liked each other and never quite got along. Of course this led to wonderful rapid, venomous dialogues and hilarious monologues where each one of them is befuddled about their feelings. The legendary Pall Mall makes an appearance too.

All in all Because of Miss Bridgerton, is fun, witty, entertaining and a page turner. The characters feel alive and Julia Quinn does a fabulous job of bringing the world alive. Recommended for all Bridgerton Series fans.
Title: Pompidou Posse
Author: Sarah Lotz
Publisher: Hodder & Stoughton , UK
My ratings: 4 out of 5 stars
Released: 10th September, 2015
A

fter writing serious fare like Three, Sarah Lotz splashes the wiring world by venturing in the YA scene. Inspired by her own memories of Paris, the story follows art students, Vicky and Sage who end up living on the street of Paris. Set in the 1980’s, it was nostalgic and edgy with a subject matter which felt intimate, gut wrenching and funny.

.

The story is told in dual perspective, where Vicky tells her own experience to her reader while Sage’s life is told in an array of diary extracts. This type of writing rounded off the stories and scenes really well, while it kept the narration from getting boring. Alternating between husking and begging, sleeping on the street, these two young women get closer than ever.

.

Sarah’s dark humour and insight into life’s small struggles was dark and that’s how I liked it.

.

All in all, the book was not something one can sing laments over but I felt like a voyeur, looking into somebody’s memories. Fondness and rhetoric reflecting in each page, it was atmospheric while telling the reader, a coming of age story where the characters learn life’s lesson’s the hard way.

.

If you are looking for something new and edgy and are fed up of those new adult romances, give Pompidou Posse a chance. It was refreshing, nostalgic and it will capture your imagination and your heart form the first page.
Title: The Moment of Letting Go
Author: J A Redmerski
Publisher: Piatkus Books, UK
My ratings: 4 out of 5 stars
Released: 3rd September, 2015
This is my first book by J. A Redmerski, off whom I had heard nothing but praises for. Her other NA novels have a fan following and I was going into The Moment of Letting Go with the same mind set.

Sienna is a wedding planner and on her holiday she meets Luke who is s a surfing instructor. Attraction blooms and before she knows it Sienna is extending her holiday and shacking up with Luke.

This book had such an easy going pace. Not all love stories have to have a whirlwind romance. Some take a natural course where people get to know each other slowly and see where their feelings take them.

For some people, it may not be what they expect from a new adult romance as it didn’t have annoying douche male characters or the ’innocent’ female protagonist. Instead we have two people getting to know each, tentatively following their hearts and falling in love.

I think, The Moment of Letting Go is a sweet, coming of age story about two very different people falling in love and making you smile as you are fondly reminded of how you fell in love. It is a perfect beach or a holiday book where the characters explore the beautiful locales in Hawaii and discover themselves at the same time.

I cannot say how excited I am about kick starting the blog tour of this amazing debut by Dawn Kurtagich’s called The Dead House. I’m not someone who reaches for a horror book as my usual genre and I started this book with some trepidation. However, I can assure you tis book was amazing. More of this will be coming later in the review but now I must proceed and squeal how delighted I am to host this blog stop. Plus I was got a surprise for you at the end. Yes a Giveaway too.

Before we go any further, let’s remind ourselves about what The Dead House is about.

Title: The Dead House
Author: Dawn Kurtagich
Publisher: Indigo Books, UK
Released: 1st August, 2015
Part-psychological
thriller, part-urban legend, this is an unsettling narrative made up of
diary entries, interview transcripts, film footage transcripts and
medical notes. Twenty-five years ago, Elmbridge High burned down. Three
people were killed and one pupil, Carly Johnson, disappeared. Now a
diary has been found in the ruins of the school. The diary belongs to
Kaitlyn Johnson, Carly’s identical twin sister. But Carly didn’t have a
twin . . .

Re-opened police records, psychiatric reports,
transcripts of video footage and fragments of diary reveal a web of
deceit and intrigue, violence and murder, raising a whole lot more
questions than it answers.

Who was Kaitlyn and why did she only
appear at night? Did she really exist or was she a figment of a
disturbed mind? What were the illicit rituals taking place at the
school? And just what did happen at Elmbridge in the events leading up
to ‘the Johnson Incident’?

Chilling, creepy and utterly
compelling, THE DEAD HOUSE is one of those very special books that finds
all the dark places in your imagination, and haunts you long after
you've finished reading.

For, this audio blog tour, Dawn has prepared these fantastic audio teasers. I’ve been lucky enough to snag the teaser where the one of the main characters, Kaitlyn introduces herself. Listen on and I promise you will be screaming for more.

Creeped out yet? Believe me when I say I jumped a few times while reading this book and yes, it was in bright daylight. I loved the format of this book, which is written in a unique format which I’ve never come across before, It was fascinating and I was hooked. The Birth of Ebrielle
The Avena Series

SECRETED deep in the Lavender Forest of Avena, four angels gather together in a birthing chamber of intricate silk webbing. In the chamber’s centre, lying on a bed of soft goose feathers is Lady Elesha in her twenty-fifth hour of labour. Clutching her hand is her partner, Commander Rhamiel, concern etched in the lines furrowing the bronze skin of his forehead.

Standing beside the Commander is the young Prince Nathaneal.

While Myrinda, the midwife, tends her patient’s needs with untiring attention even though it has been a very long day.

Wanting to comfort his wife, Rhamiel releases his wings with gentle and expert precision, bringing the silken tips round to caress the sides of Elesha’s straining face. Though he acknowledges his limited experience in this field, Rhamiel’s concern continues to grow, recalling how their first child’s labour had lasted for seven hours and not a moment more.

Standing quietly watching, not once complaining of how long it is taking, the boy-prince’s yellow eyebrows furrow beneath the flop of hair that sweeps across his forehead. His arms go rigid by his sides as Lady Elesha once again stiffens and arches her back in a contraction that brings the prince’s tally to five hundred and thirty-two. And he wonders yet again how Lady Elesha can endure it.

Though unrelated by blood to the expectant parents, the prince understands the importance of his presence – a witness to the birth of a future royal bride - his bride. Since his wings have not yet emerged, and will not do so until the onset of his pubescent years, all he can do to calm his anxiety is clench and unclench his fists.

Prince Nathaneal does not doubt Lady Elesha’s strength. He has known and admired her for all of his seven years. She is his mother’s friend and equal to his father in rank. His mother

often regaled him with stories of the battles they fought, facing demons and dark angels in combat for centuries before his birth.

But Lady Elesha hasn’t cried out once, as his mother warned was usual at such times, and he is not a stupid boy. His teachers’ reports overflow with praise of his high intellect. He knows that by now Lady Elesha’s suffering is more than most can bear, that she is - simply put - in agony, no matter how she chooses to mask it on his or the Commander’s behalf.

Elesha smiles at the prince, takes his hand and lays it on her swollen belly in an action that is so swift Nathaneal finds his fingers locked in the Lady’s steel grip before he has a chance to protest or withdraw.

Beneath his fingers a sudden flutter occurs, followed by a burst of powerful emotion, with a vision and a message. The prince’s bright blue eyes widen at the unexpected connection – a mind-link, forged from within the womb, with words and images shaped and uttered by the infant’s mind for him. Astonished, he glances up. ‘She spoke to me. She remembers our time together in the spirit world. And she showed me things.’ Murmurs of amazement pass between the parents and midwife as they digest what an incredible feat has just occurred. ‘She asked,’ the prince laughs, ‘if I belong to her.’

Lady Elesha gasps at her daughter’s audacity, while the Commander and midwife erupt with laughter. Oblivious to the adults’ amusement, Nathaneal understands something astounding is happening. Memories blast into existence, memories of their great love, of the life they shared whilst they were both in the spirit world for the last three thousand years, and of their promise to find each other.

On the cusp of their imminent reunion, a sense of protection has the prince looking around the chamber, checking for cracks, loose threads, any sign of unravelling. So intense is his examination that he misses the question the Commander asks.

‘I’m sorry, my lord, did you say something?’

Amused at the prince’s excitement, Commander Rhamiel repeats his question, ‘Did you answer my daughter, Nathaneal?’

‘I did, my lord. I said, “Yes, Ebrielle, I am the one who belongs to you.” It was the code we came up with, a question one of us would ask the other to be sure we’d truly found each other.’

‘Ebrielle?’ the Commander says. ‘How did you know that is the name we have chosen for our child? Who told you?’

The boy shrugs. ‘No one told me, my Lord. It’s the name I know her by, what I called her all those years we shared together in our spirit form.’

Rhamiel and Elesha exchange wondrous glances.

Hoping for another chance to communicate with his future bride; and wanting to ease Lady Elesha’s suffering, Nathaneal places his palm once more on the Lady’s belly, splays his fingers and, in the way of his training, wills calm energy to dull Lady Elesha’s sense of pain. His hand glows and Elesha sighs and closes her eyes for an indulgent moment.

She glances at the young prince. ‘You have the healer’s touch, Nathaneal.’

He smiles. ‘So I am told, my lady.’

‘Thank you, Nathaneal, but I think…’ Replacing his hand with her own, Elesha circles her swollen abdomen, uttering softly, ‘it appears, now that our little angel knows you are here, she is in a hurry to make her appearance.’

As the Commander ruffles the prince’s yellow hair, the midwife announces, ‘Time you were gone from here, my young prince. Your betrothed is about to join us and I’m sure she would not be pleased to know you were the first to see her naked!’

The Commander roars with laughter. So amused by Myrinda’s declaration he forges a mind-link to Prince Jaquel, Nathaneal’s father, in charge of the protective guard that presently surrounds them.

In the dark forest outside the chamber, with no lights to give away their secret location, Prince Jaquel laughs, and thinking to relieve his soldier’s tension, forges the amusing anecdote to the guards nearest him, who in turn mind-link the tale to the soldiers in the trees.

Hearing subdued laughter seeping through the chamber walls, Nathaneal identifies his father’s as the loudest and cringes. Though he is aware that he must leave quickly he must also be careful not to break the chamber’s protective seal. But his belt buckle catches on a sticky silken thread, pulling several more from the tight weave with each movement. His father notices and moves quickly to assist him. With his adept and experienced fingers, untangling his son’s buckle should only take a mere second, but Jaquel’s torso is still jumping with mirth and his fingers move more like thumbs.

Nathaneal shoves his father’s hands away. ‘Leave me be, father, you are making it worse. I will do it on my own.’

Overhearing the exchange, soldiers pass looks to one another with eyebrows raised.

Prince Jaquel steps back, hands in the air, mouth drawn straight and tight. His soldiers

talk to him with more respect than his own son. With humiliation burning inside, he grits his teeth and hisses, ‘Do it quickly, Nathaneal, or you risk breaking the seal, allowing light to beam into the heavens for our enemies to see.’

It takes only a few moments to free himself, but the prince fears his efforts have taken too long. Finally he steps aside, and looking through the dark shadows he notices a wave of grey mist rolling through the trees towards them. He glances to the sky and observes the grey mist obliterating the stars with unnatural speed. ‘Father!’

Commander Jaquel rushes over, observes the mist and frowns. ‘I don’t like this.’ With his senses on high alert, his head slightly tilted, eyes darting in all directions into a darkness that continues to darken further, he listens. With eyes wide with dread, he withdraws his sword and commands his troops, ‘To arms!’ Throwing his son a quick glance, he hisses, ‘Now we shall see the damage you have done.’

The next thing Nathaneal hears is the precise swishing of steel as five hundred swords unsheathe in the darkness, followed by his father’s command against his ear, ‘Return to base as fast as you can.’

Though young and inexperienced in battle, it is not Nathaneal’s nature to run. ‘Father, don’t send me away, I can help.’

Flying demons swoop down from the skies, screeching in a guttural language the soldiers cannot understand. With bared, razor-sharp teeth the demons bring down the soldiers, gnawing at their limbs, igniting everything they touch into flames.

‘Go, Nathaneal, now!’ Knowing the boy’s courage could one day be his undoing, but that it should not be today, Commander Jaquel grabs his son by the shoulders and turns him to face direct south. ‘Run and keep running until you find Prince Michael. Inform him of what has happened. Hurry!’

Nathaneal runs fast, scattering the creatures of the forest. He puts distance behind him so rapidly their temporary camp lights soon come into focus.

But a sudden bright flash ignites the sky overhead. He stops and turns. The air shudders before him, trees shredding their leaves as a great wave of pulsing energy lifts him off his feet and hurls him backwards into trees bent over to half their size. He staggers up, aghast at the destruction, the forest laid bare, thick smoke rising in the shape of a mushroom cloud, pushing up into the night sky above the area of the birthing chamber.

Ebrielle?

Father?

Did I do this? He questions himself.

If only I hadn’t been in such a hurry to get out!

A flock of black-winged demons, with a dark angel at their centre, fly fast towards him, and as they pass high overhead he hears a wailing cry. The sound is foreign to the young prince’s ears, but only for an instant before he recognises her voice. ‘Ebrielle,’ he gasps with a shadow of a small smile, ‘you’re alive. Take heart, for I will come. I will find you.’
Series: The DUFF
Author: Kody Keplinger
Publisher: Hodder's Childern's Books
My ratings: 5 out of 5 stars
Releasing: 2nd July, 2015
I immensely enjoyed The DUFF and when LOL came out I was like a cat who got the cream. LOL or Lying Out Loud is the story of Sonya who simply can't stop lying. She is a compulsive liar who lies all the time. Her best friend is Amy who is Wesley's sister ( for Duff fans like me). Then she meets Ryan, the new guy in Hamilton High whom she dislikes on first sight. Ryan who has a crush on Amy. One chance encounter online she get to chat with him and before she knows it she is falling in love with him. Only problem is that he thinks he is talking to Amy.

I really enjoyed LOL. It was nappy and a quick read. It was riddled with Kody Keplinger smart writing quips which makes me keep reading. Her characters her almost always flawed yet I find them real. Sonya was no exception. She could not stop lying and even when she knew what she was doing was hurting people around her, she struggled to give up that habit. Almost everyone in the story is flawed with Ryan who only saw in Black and white and Amy, who was too timid and unable to speak for herself.

No matter how stupidly Sonya acted and kept digging herself a bigger hole, I could not hate her. I found myself sympathizing with her. In fact, my heart broke for her when we learn about her past. The romance was so sweet between Ryan and Sonya and their connection was palpable.

Overall, I may have enjoyed The DUFF ( Read my review here) more, I do think LOL was also a solid book which will resonate with it's audience with it's witty MC and bevy of winning side characters. For The DUFF fans. there is plenty of Bianca and Wesley. It seems like Kody Keplinger has got the knack for writing great YA contemporary stories and has become a firm favourite for me.
Title: The Beautiful and the Cursed
Series: The Dispossessed
Author: Paige Morgan
Publisher:Hot Key Books, UK
My ratings: 4 out of 5 stars
Released: 3rd May, 2013
Gothic YA fantasy are rare and far in between, so when I found Page Morgan's the Beautiful and the Cursed, I wanted to give it a go. I enjoy fantasy novels and this book was no different. Ingrid, her sister and her mother move to Paris to an abandoned Abbey, to spend some time with their brother. But soon it is clear that he is missing. Determined to find him, Ingrid and Gabriella are soon embroiled into a centuries old curse. Being residents of the Abbey, they fall underneath the protection of Luc the resident young lad who works in the stables but is more than he appears to be. He is a Gargoyle, tasked with protecting the Abbey and fighting an intense attraction to Ingrid..

I really enjoyed this book and especially it's setting. While the plot was not spectacularly gripping nor the writing unique, it still kept me interested. The flow and the setting was beautiful and I found myself immersed in nineteenth century Paris, in it's dark gothic glory. The tall church spires and the e;elegant and ugly statues of gargoyles guarding building with their stern expressions and steely eyes.

For romance lovers, there is plenty to to relish as there are not one but so love stories sprouting in the midst of the confusion and mystery. While I was rooting for Ingrid and Luc's forbidden romance, Nolan's and Gabriella's romance made me slightly uncomfortable with Gabriella being 15 years old and Nolan nearly twenty. But looking at the fact that this was set 100 years ago, this was acceptable..

The Beautiful and the Cursed was a unique take in the crowded YA fantasy market. It may not have tried to achieve something new, it nevertheless kept me entertained. I could feel the cold and dark seeping into my very skin while imagining my characters walking through the beautiful streets of Paris in their charming dresses and carriages. The setting was dark, chilling and thoroughly chilling which begs I grab the second book and the third book which released last month.
Author: Lisa Drakeford
Publisher:Chicken House Books, UK
My ratings: 4 out of 5 stars
Released: 2nd of July, 2015
It's Olivia's birthday and she is having a great time, until she opens her bathroom door and finds her best friend giving birth. From then on, everything changes. The Baby is the story of five friends told in five perspective of the consequences and changes a baby brings in peoples lives. Especially in these circumstances, it changes lives but also people. .

Going too much into the plot will give the story away as the enjoyment of the book rests on how slowly facts are revealed and what you always suspected come true. I relished how subtlety and masterfully the author made me sympathises with a character I found deplorable. It showed what a profound effect children can have on people around them..

The Baby explores the relationship and dynamics between five people, how the arrival of a baby changes them for better or for worse. This is a smart book which explores many avenues including teen age pregnancies, sexuality, friendship and even abuse. .

Sensitive and mature yet The Baby manages to capture an essence of what it is like being a Teen with 'adult' problems.

Publisher:Electric Monkey, UK
My ratings: 4 out of 5 stars
Released: 2nd of July, 2015
alling this book a mixture of gone Girl and 13 Reasons why piqued my interest enough that I had to pick this book up and give it a go.I am being repeated surprised with contemporary books lately and suicide notes from Beautiful girls is no exception.

It starts of with June getting the news that her ex best friend had killed herself. Over the last few months Delia and June had grown apart. June is filled with regret and anguish about her sudden death but soon Delia Boy friend tells her how Delia couldn't have done it herself That she was murdered. June is convinced that Jeremiah is right and is determined to find the truth. the story is told from various POV with flash backs of the past. Through June's eyes we get to see Delia and love her as much as June did.

Wild, and uncontrollable Delia was everything June was not and both had a strange unbreakable bond which slowly withers away. I enjoyed this book immensely. I thought it was gripping and June's pain for her loss was palpable. We get flash backs of their childhood together and how they were each other's soul mates. Until the 'twist' happens. I think this is where the story loses it's steam. I can't go into it as it will be spoilery but the marketing tag lines gives it away. I suppose the author was trying to leave events to the reader's imagination but some times it I felt it required a little more explaining.

Besides the crazy plotlines towards the end, I really enjoyed the writing style. The choice of words and the descriptions for the emotions churning , were raw and primeval, making my palms clammy with fear.It invoked a sense was wildness in the story which was gripping, imaginative and gruesome. I ate it up.

I enjoyed the first half of the book but found the second half lacking with many plot threads left hanging without proper explanation. I'd definitely recommended it to YA fans, who like dark, thrilling contemporaries.
Title: Hidden Huntress
Series: The Malediction Trilogy
Author: Danielle L Jensen
Publisher: Angry Robot Books
My ratings: 4 out of 5 stars
Released: 2nd June, 2015
Stolen Songbird ended with a premise that had me panting for the second book. And Hidden Huntress does not disappoint. Cecile is in the capital city looking for Anoushka and living with her mother whom she despises. While she loves the singing and the stage, her search for the ancient witch gets riddled with hurdles. One meeting with the King of Trollus and watching Tristian being tortured, Cecile finds herself, under an oath to find Anoushka at any cost.

Told in dual points of views, this edition of The Malediction Trilogy, managed to show not only Cecile’s frantic search but also Tristian’s desperate attempts at keeping Trollus together. Unlike Stolen Songbird, Hidden Huntress had a different flavour to it. It feels like each book takes a different turn toward the ultimate goal. While in the first book, Cecile was trapped and looking for a way out, it was very much about the politics of Trollus and Cecile’s escape. In the second book, it was that and much more. We watch Cécile sinking into the depths of madness and Tristian torn between his wife and the plight of his own people.

Truth be told, this book was a slow starter for me. In fact I found Cécile’s POV less interesting while Tristian’s world filled me with intrigue and dread. However when eventually it all catches up, it is goes all out in a flurry of fireworks. Revelations and secrets out in the open, with Cecile and Tristian finally achieving what they set do, only to be forced to face an even greater foe.

I enjoyed Hidden Huntress immensely which delivered in every aspect as much as I expected. Thankfully it does not suffer the dreadful second book syndrome which Jenson beautifully crafted out the Trilogy, where each book feels like a new chapter in Cécile and Tristian’s lives. If I didn’t like Tristian before, I freaking loved him in this one and I’m sure you guys will too.
