Jim Corning had an idea. Wouldn't it be cool if you could put four solar panels on your house, and then be able to power a vehicle with the energy created with them? Corning, who founded Prometheus Solar LLC, didn't have a vehicle he could power with sunlight, but he did have a wife with a Ninja 250 that wasn't getting much use.

Today, Corning has a proof-of-concept electric motorcycle. At the Santa Monica AltCar Expo, Corning was talking with curious visitors all weekend, but was happy to tell AutoblogGreen about the bike. The four panels behind Corning in the picture above offer 800 watts, enough to recharge the bike. During testing, he's blown up the batteries twice, and those accidents helped him realize the benefits of a more aerodynamic bike. Inspired by Craig Vetter's fuel efficiency contests of the 1980s, Corning designed the Prometheus research vehicle to be quite slippery (note the front wheel cover and the extended back end to give the air somewhere to go). He also wanted to keep the upright seating of a motorcycle, which influenced the desighn. Currently, the bike uses lithium-ion phosphate batteries from Thundersky that have a 4.6 kWh capacity connected to a 10 HP Perm PMG 132 motor. That means he can go up to 70 mph and has a range of about 50 miles. The bike is not for sale, but there has been no lack of interest, both at the show and on the street. Corning said he had to buy an open face helmet to talk to all of the people who chat him up at stop lights.

Designers like Nicolas Stone believe solar energy is the future and cars manufacturers should sooner or later venture into designs that generate their own fuelwith on-board systems.

The designer has come up with a new family car designed for Hyundai dubbed the Hyundai 2020. The small car is aimed toward a family of four people.

Inspired by plants, the car generates fuel for itself using nothing more than sunlight and water, the two fuels for plants to carry out their natural processes.

The transparent solar cells that the car is equipped with generates electricity from ambient light and uses it to carry out electrolysis of water, finally generating hydrogen, which fuels the car.

The only by-product of the car engine will be clean potable water and breathable oxygen.

The Dark Side:

The overall design of the car looks pleasing and the technology used by Nicholas ensures a pleasant ride. However, splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen and then storinghydrogen in an on-board tank seems a complicated and a risky mechanism, not to mention the cost of incorporating this technology in a small car.

While solar-powered cars remain the stuff of science fiction tales for most of us, some forward-thinking engineers have been building -- and racing -- them for years. But designing a car to run on solar power is a tall order.

Solar panels aren't incredibly efficient -- most commercial panels can only boast an efficiency rating of around 15 percent. That means the panel is only able to convert 15 percent of the sunlight it receives into electricity. Some manufacturers have managed to get up to 42 percent efficiency in lab tests.

Solar-powered cars use electric motors instead of internal combustion engines. And most solar-powered cars are light, one-person vehicles. The lighter the vehicle, the less work the motor has to do to move the car. Vehicles tend to be flat and wide to maximize surface area while still being aerodynamic. Many solar-powered cars have a maximum speed between 40 and 60 miles per hour (64.4 and 96.6 kilometers per hour). That's not enough to make your average highway patrol officer bat an eye.

But the University of Michigan Solar Car Team raced a car in 2010 that could earn a heavy-footed driver more than a few speeding tickets. The team's car, called the Infinium, reportedly reached the record-breaking speed of 105 miles per hour (169 kilometers per hour) during a qualifying race for the American Solar Challenge, an annual solar-powered car race.

The University of Michigan team went on to win the 2010 American Solar Challenge. The six-day race was a tough 1,100-mile (1,770-kilometer) course and the car averaged 40 miles per hour (64.4 kilometers per hour) on a route that included intersections with stop lights.

As solar panel technology improves, we may see engineers incorporate it into other electric vehicle designs. While the cars in the solar races aren't meant for the average driver, other electric vehicles may use solar power to extend the distance they can travel before requiring a recharging station. Such vehicles won't be strictly solar-powered. But it may help bridge the gap between prototype race cars and practical vehicles. It may also give green drivers even more speed -- the Tesla Roadster, an electric sports car, has a top speed of 125 miles per hour (201.2 kilometers per hour)!

Central and Eastern Europe might not be the first places you think of when it comes to electric cars. In fact, you’re probably more likely to think of bad cars, such as the infamous Yugo, dubbed the worst car in history.
Although it’s not particularly known for its autos, Hungary is taking a stab at the electric vehicle market with a futuristic new solar-electric car. Founded by auto enthusiasts and backed by local investors, the Hungarian company Antro, is working on a prototype for a modular car that is capable of splitting into two separate vehicles. With solar panels on the roof, the three passenger Antro Solo can run up to 20 km per day on solar energy alone.

The environmentally-conscious company started research back in 2002 and, with backing from various local sponsors, has invested 1.5 million euros in market research and development of a working prototype.

The Antro Solo concept is a three-passenger car, with a hybrid drive and solar cells on its roof that the company says could generate enough electricity for up to 20km a day at city speeds.

Futuristic looking in itself, the grander plan for the car is much more audacious: Antro intends to allow users to be able to connect two Antro Solos to form a six-passenger Antro Duo. Or perhaps more interesting still, owners of a Duo could split the car into two smaller Solos should Mum have different weekend plans to Dad. Or if they divorce.

The current prototype looks interesting, but I can’t believe its chances of ever making it to past the prototype stage are much above slim.

Also worth a mention, just across the border to the south of Hungary, is a Croatian company called Dok-ing. It specialises in making landmine clearance machines, and sports the company motto: “Don’t send a man to do a machine’s job.” But it, too, has launched its own project for a small electric city car called Dok-ing XD — a fully electric three-seater that promises to travel 155 miles on a single two-hour charge.

The project was disclosed in 2009 after four years of development. But like Antro, Dok-ing XD sounds and looks good, but the likelihood of it hitting mass production are low. Local media hype followed announcement of the project last summer, but there has been no news since. The working prototype was expected to be on roads by the end of last year, which led to mass production being optimistically scheduled for middle of 2010.

Since most solar cars are designed as race cars, this trend has contributed in a big way for the initiation of the global solar car races namely the World Solar Challenge, Australia (started in 1983, this 3,012-kilometer race goes across Australia and happens every three years.) and the Toyota American Solar Challenge (a 3,862-kilometer ace from Dallas, Texas, to Alberta, Calgary). This state-of-the-art solar-powered car has been designed by students and faculty at the University of New South Wales (UNSW). Their claim to fame came when they set a new record for the Guinness World Land-Speed record for a solar-powered vehicle in January 2011. Sunswift Ivy drove at 88 km/hr on roughly 1500 Watts.

The vehicle built on “open-sourced” experience of engineers, hackers, and tinkerers around the world comprises of a full scale multi-disciplinary, student-led solar racing team. Their dream was made possible by $280,000 AUD funding made by liberal donors and corporate sponsors and of course by the UNSW.

The car weighs about 1/10th of a conventional car and equipped with a 98% efficient Brushless CSIRO 3 phase DC motor needs just 1300 watts of solar generated power to achieve its estimated average speed of 85 km/h.

This car has been designed by three engineering students from the Department of Traffic Engineering of Vietnam’s Da Nang University of Technology. Ta Ngoc Thien Binh, Huynh Kim Trang and Pham Nguyen Son under the careful and supportive guidance of Duong Viet Dung, a teacher from their faculty, has come up with a solar car which can hit a maximum speed of 30kph and weighs around 350 Kg. The SC4, which costs about US$4,200, can run for 30km on single charge and can also run on liquefied natural gas(LPG). Based on the technology invented by Professor Dr Bui Van Ga, the car runs by a heat engine using LPG (which is built along the electricity engine) when the supply of electricity runs out or there is no sunlight.

The 10th Auto Expo January 2011 New Delhi witnessed a unique futuristic yellow solar car calledAdvay II, which was designed by a group of 16 resourceful students from the Netaji Subhash Institute of Technology, Delhi University.

The non-polluting, zero-emission vehicle, is only 5 meters in length with aluminum interiors. The carbon fiber-reinforced sheets and polyurethane foam mixture used to make the exterior body of the car has helped in reducing the weight of the car to 380 kg. Palestine is finally seeing a greener horizon, and has rolled out its first solar powered set of four wheels. A group of engineering students from the Palestine Polytechnic University in Hebron have turned to harness its warm sunny weather with about 300 sunny days per year to design a solar car which closely resembles a golf cart and is called as the TMT. Using 24 volts that is drawn from its 12 batteries the car can power up for 3 to 5 hours.

A team of students at the Cambridge University have developed a new solar car, entitled the “Bethany”, which can cruise at 60 mph, using the same amount of energy as a conventional hairdryer. Weighing just 170kg, the car generates energy using an array of high-efficiency silicon cells which together creates the car’s solar skin. Apart from generating energy from the sun, the car has been incorporated with regenerative braking systems, which recharge the car’s batteries when brakes are applied. “Bethany” has been designed using the latest computer simulation software, which gives it the ability to run at 50 times less power than a normal petrol-fueled vehicle. In June, the car will be competing in the World Solar Challenge race from Darwin to Adelaide, a distance of over 3,000km. The technology used in the car does give it the edge. However, costing £200,000, the technology cannot be used in commercial cars.

Working along with Siemens LLC, students at the American University of Sharjah (AUS) have developed a solar-powered car they call the Sunchaser. Designed as a regional prototype for vehicles, the Siemens Sunchaser is powered by 740 Sanyo HIT 220 watts and BP 35U 50W solar panels that are divided into four sub-arrays. Together the solar panels charge 30 Kokam 40Ah lithium-ion batteries. The power from the lithium-ion battery pack is transmitted to two brushless DC motors which deliver a total torque at the rated speed of 20.8Nm, allowing the car to run at a speed of around 90km/h while operating at 115 volts. The car will remain on the AUS campus, where its features will be optimized for greater performance.

A student team at the Waterloo Collegiate Institute has designed a solar-powered truck modeled on the famous Ford Model-T design and hence named as the Ford Model-T replica. Built on a sponsorship of just $4300, won from the Reduce the Juice Foundation that promotes projects that reduce emissions, the vehicle has a golf cart gearbox, a computer joystick and a “suicide switch” that automatically stops the truck if the driver falls off. The team states that the solar truck can top out at 50kph, which is decent considering that it’s their first attempt.

Students of the University of Michigan have developed a solar car called Infinium, powered entirely by the solar panels which cover the entire body of the sleek and lightweight car. The 600-pound car is made from a lightweight composite material that allows the car to reach a top speed of 80-100mph. After winning the 2010 American Solar Challenge (a 1,200 mile race from Tulsa, Okla. to Naperville) for the sixth time at a row, the group is now raising money by seeking donations for the equipment and the cost to race in Australia, which will add up to $2.4 million.

• Apollo’s Chariot

A team of students of the American University of Beirut has come up with a steel and fiberglass one-seater solar car called Apollo’s Chariot after nine months of hard-working tutelage under their professor Daniel Asmar. The car weighing about 1,500 pounds is about 18 feet in length and 6 feet of width. Three dozen photovoltaic cells on the car’s body produce about 1,000 watts of electricity, stored in batteries built into the car. Built with about of $25,000 the car as promised by one of their designers, Amin Kanafani, can go as fast as 40mph. The designers hope to represent Lebanon in next year’s World Solar Challenge, a 2,000-mile Australian car rally for sun-powered vehicles.

Starting this coming spring, a slick new solar-powered electric vehicle will be hitting the streets of Europe. Italian car designer Pininfarina and French battery manufacturer Bolloré have officially announced that the five door Blue Car hatchback is now ready for production. A fully-electric vehicle with solar panels by 2010? Count us in!

Previously unveiled at last years Geneva Show, the Blue Car is a fully-electric vehicle that comes equipped with solar panels on the rooftop. The vehicle is 3.65 meters long, 1.6 meters high and 1.72 meters wide, and features a 50kW electric motor that provides an acceleration of 0-60mph in around 6 seconds and a top speed of 80mph.

The solar panels on the vehicle’s roof provides some power to the vehicle’s systems. It comes with regenerative brakes and a Lithium Metal Polymer batteries, and has a range of 155 miles per charge. According to the manufacturer, all the materials in the construction have been sourced to be as environmentally friendly as possible.

Every Tuesday we bring word of new concept vehicles that stand to revolutionize the world. Every once in a while though one of those vehicles just happens to become reality. The Blue Car will be available in 2010, with full scale production of 60,000 units in the years to come.

Has The Solar Car Arrived Yet?

Solar technology has evolved considerably these past few years, but often the cost of buying solar panels and having them installed on your house to provide hot water or even to power your home is too expensive compared to the savings.

Some experts suggest it’ll take seven to ten years to clear your costs and then maintenance kicks in. So how close is a car you can realistically drive without topping up expensively at the fuel station?

The reasons for wanting a solar powered car are obvious. A car with almost no running costs and with no environmentally poor emissions is beneficial to all. The problem lies in having enough sun hours to power up the batteries required to store energy to drive the car. Also, balancing the solar usage with a small engine makes a hybrid car that rather defeats the object.

There’s also the matter of the cost and what about roadside cover ? Would your current first choice of company be able to assist you?

How Much To Buy A Solar Car?

Solar cars have mostly been developed by universities as student projects. Almost every design to date insists on a science fiction look. This ensures the best air flow to keep the car moving without the hindrance of wind streams.

Most current variations include either one or two cramped seats with storage space being only enough for a Kindle. Usually these cars have enormous turning circles and are extremely fragile because of the materials used for manufacture.

Hybrid vehicles are all the current rage, but only meet the needs of energy fuel costs half way. Most can’t go far enough on battery power alone or their speeds are too slow for highway driving. The alternative all electric cars still rely on fossil fuels to power them and we all know where these fuel costs are going – an upward direction only.

The British ran a television programme back in the seventies called ‘Tomorrow’s World.’ It was full of inventions that would help the world grow without high energy costs. It’s known that the oil and car manufacturers paid high dollar amounts to purchase the patents and intellectual property to prevent the loss of future oil and car revenue. They stopped the public from seeing the future evolve earlier. It’s only now that car manufacturers have been forced to think forwards. Nevertheless, they still avoid the solar powered plans.

The other prohibitive part of the equation is the cost; many potential solar cars are available between US$100,000 and $200,000.

Do Solar Cars Need A Motor?

Yes, is the easy answer. A motor is still required to take the energy from the solar panels to power the wheels. The electrical energy required is coming from inefficient solar cells and that’s when the sun is out. Without direct sunlight, you’re going to be relying on stored energy.

The composite of carbon fibre with a nomex core gives a solar car strength and rigidity. With suspensions made of aluminium, a small weight base for the car keeps the efficiency higher than petrol based car.

Small Parts Are Expensive

Unfortunately, technology stills needs to evolve with solar panels for use on cars. Whereas a building doesn’t move with solar panels aimed for the greatest collection of sun possible, a car drives through tunnels and gets parked in a garage. If the power from solar panels isn’t stored in batteries (which adds to the weight of the car to be propelled) a car can only be driven in bright sunshine which rules out 60% of the global market.

Many of the lessons learned by building solar cars have been applied to hybrid and electric cars. The day will arrive soon when the technology meets the needs of the customer and hopefully at the right price.

The regular racing of solar cars proves that they can travel 750 km a day at highway speeds. The design of the racing cars isn’t practical for day to day use, but the link is there so it shouldn’t be long until solar cars are available for everyday use, unless the car manufacturers prevent their mainstream arrival. After all, the large auto manufacturers have spent millions on developing their current ranges. Why should they change just for the environment?

A table top on two wheels still isn’t a common sight on roads around the world. But if you ever catch one, be sure that it must be a solar car. The prototypes mostly took the form of flat solar collectors on four wheels with the driver just managing to squeeze himself in. As in anything experimental, interest in solar cars germinated in the fertile minds that occupy the portals of our universities. A Quixotic zeal against the carbon belching ‘environmental hazards’ we commonly call cars set off development of its solar cousin.

The solar car owes its existence to the photovoltaic cell. A tiny piece of silicon which transfers the power of the sun to the batteries. The photovoltaic cell made its appearance in the United States in 1954. Pioneering work by Daryl Chapin, Calvin Fuller, and Gerald Pearson at the Bell Labs allowed us to harness the power of the sun for the first time. Thereon development progressed.

In the early years of automobiles, the races were the laboratories where car development often took place. And so has been the case with solar cars throughout its short history. Hans Tholstrup and Larry Perkins opened up solar car racing when they went on an epic Solar Trek from Perth to Sydney (Australia) in 1983. The vehicle practically resembled a 16 foot open boat. But it did 4052 km in 20 days, at an average speed 23 km/hour. This vehicle was the world’s first solar powered car. And its name fit the exploit – ‘Quiet Achiever’. The Danish adventurer’s exuberance helped. The solar car races soon started capturing eyeballs and helped to propagate solar energy as an alternative.

The success of his first venture across the Australian outback led Hans Tholstrup to start the World Solar Challenge in 1987. The leapfrog over the first effort showed in 1987 when GM’s Sunraycer won the event with an average speed of 67 km/hour. Today, the event is a biannual jamboree and also a barometer for the developments in the field of solar cars. For instance, 2005 witnessed cars touching speeds in excess of 100 km/hour. This lead to some major regulation changes concerning safety.

The World Solar Challenge started it and soon others followed the lead. The North American Solar Challenge brings to the fore numerous University teams pitting their brains as well as their skills against each other. This year’s one ran from Dallas, Texas to Calgary, Alberta. General Motors had followed up its success in the World Solar Challenge by starting this American/Canadian version. This was an inspirational effort to promote auto engineering and solar energy among college students. It may not have intruded into the popular firmament of Formula One, but with races around the world – the Suzuki Circuit (Japan), World Solar Rally (in Taiwan), Phaethon (Greece) amongst others, the enthusiast can expect action to flare up.

Today, solar cars have entered the realm of popular mechanics. Practical on road applications are looking to use solar energy in hybrid configurations. France’s Venturi AstroLab is being anticipated as the world’s first electro-solar hybrid car. With a top speed of 120 km/hour and a continuous run of 110 km, we just might see it kerbing up next to us. The 2008 Paris Motor Show featured there Venturi’s line of electric vehicles.

There’s the solar taxi or ‘Solartx’ for you. An example of Swiss vision, the car attempts to be a trendsetter for a dependable, everyday automobile. Powered by a 6 m² sized solar array, the vehicle goes 400 km without recharging. It includes a trailer and its maximum speed hovers around 90 km/hour.

Toyota is looking to add solar panels on its Prius. Innovatively, the optional attachments can deliver 300 watts of energy and also act as sunshades. 2009 might see its launch.
The ‘history of solar cars’ is almost an anachronism because it seems rather contemporary. But as technology develops and shapes with time, we might be looking at cars like the Prius as artifacts. Let’s hope that solar cars find their place in the sun.

Donâ€™t you just love futuristic car designs? Sure, some may look cool but not quite practical. There are many designers whoâ€™d try to come up with something fancy. The guys over at Volkswagen showed us some interesting concepts, but BMW has some more radical concepts in mind. They want their cars to look something like this before 2015.

The designs you see in these images are provided by a group of Transportation Design students at Turin-based IED (Istituto Europeo di Design). They sure have a more aggressive and aerodynamic look than those presented by VW.

Apparently, the BMW prototype doesnâ€™t really fit the 2015 time scheme. We might see a commercial version 50 years maybe, but for 2015 it still looks ahead of its time. DVice infors that it is dubbed BMW ZX-6 Concept and it was designed by Jai Ho Yoo and Lukas Vanek. These guys though of something that would break the speed of sound, I reckon. It looks cool, but I wonder if it has any wheels. It might be using other kinds of propulsion, maybe some levitating pads. Anyway, the concept integrates some sleek curves and shiny materials, make it visually appealing and an instant girl magnet.

It looks far out, but Iâ€™d still take it to a tuning center.
