How to Change the Hostfile Entry in the Cent OS 7

In Order to change the host file entry in the Centos 7, you may need to login on the console using the root credentials and have to run the below command:

# hostnamectl set-hostname

Once the above command is executed you may need to restart the network services to ensure the changes made persists in the system.

# /etc/init.d/network restart

Get-esxcli will help us to run the CLI commands over the host directly but to extend it we cannot run certain commands directly over the host, In such case, we can use the below script to run directly on the host and achieve our goals.

One shot with the script to achieve multiple targets

My target was given to check the status of smartd services in each host and disable it, So I have put the commands on the variable $cmd and $cmd2 and executing it in all the machines, which has been feed in the variable $machines, command get executed in all the hosts fed in the variable $machines.

I was just wondering that how to reset the IE personal settings through command line as I am much more interested over the cli functions, just got this command to reset the settings of the IE to the default one.

Run the above code by pressing the (windows key + R), Just type the above command and you will get the below prompt. just select the checkbox and click reset button all is done.

Default powershell commands not getting executed , getting command not recognized.

I was working on some weird cases that some of the basic powershell commands are not getting executed in the machine and i came to know that the powershell modules are not getting loaded due to which default modules are not getting loaded in the psmodule path.

Resolution would be to run the below commands:

Else you need to create a PSModulePath value under the below path :

and need to enter the value of path mentioned below in the PSModulePath key :

Once the value is entered you can be able to execute the basic commands, this kind of error mostly occurs if any customization is done by the any application in powershell scripts.

Fetch the List of RDMs Attached in the machine using Powercli

I used to maintain a powercli toolkit to ensure all the redundant tasks which ever to be performed can be automated in the proper way without affecting the running environment.

I am sharing a script which comes in handy when you need to identify the list of RDMs attached to the virtual machines in the cluster

This command has been tested under vcenter 5.5 and 6.0.

Auto creation and deletion of Snapshots in Vsphere Environment using Powercli

Today we are gonna develop a script that will automatically delete multiple snapshots that has been taken in VMs running in the Vsphere environment. We use powercli to create the script and run over the vcenter where the VMs are hosted

Before we go ahead, I would like to share you a small brief on what is powercli, powercli is a command-line interface (CLI) tool for automating vSphere and vCloud management. VMware vSphere PowerCLI debuted as the VMware Infrastructure Toolkit, also called the VI Toolkit.

We have created two machine named test-vigneshbabu, test1-vigneshbabu as shown below:

Now we are gonna trigger a script that will take the snapshot of these machines as “before patching” as shown below, You can customise the name of the snapshots according to your standards.

Note: path of the get-content is customisable and it’s the file containing the list of machines where the snapshot has to be created.

After execution:

Now we have successfully created a script where we can create multiple snapshots provided we have the list of machines in txt file as shown above.

Just to ensure the snapshots are created we checked in the GUI and we have got the below output under the manage snapshots page

As we have created snapshots now its time we need to delete the snapshots which we have taken for two machines through powercli. As shown below type the commands

After the execution of the above script the snapshots created for two machines will be deleted. Through powercli you can see the progress bar of the machine deletion status and it requires not human intervention for deletion or multiple popup boxes to confirm the deletion process.

In the above screenshot it clearly states that the snapshots has been deleted and this was taken from the vcenter console.

This small lines of scripts can be runned for n Number of VMs running over the Vcenter. This could save your hours of time which you can spend and concentrate on some other productive works. Voila and here you go.

NLM Errors in the Windows SCCM Client

1. Stop the windows update service, rename or delete the Software Distribution folder (%windir%\softwareDistribution) and start windows update service. This approach provides a fresh start with a new Windows Update data store if the Datastore.edb file is corrupted.

2. Open Windows update log file under path C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log and check latest logs especially NLM error.

3. Download below KB article from Microsoft catalog site. KB2919355 or you can download the the patches from the below link.

4. Uninstall all patches(KB2919355, KB2932046, KB2959977, KB2937592, KB2938439, KB2934018, KB2919442) if it is installed and restart server

5. Install KB2919355 now on server and restart server again.

6. Restart the windows update service, Go to control panel, open configuration manager, Go to Actions tab and trigger software update scan cycle and software update deployment evaluation cycle & check the logs.

7. Wait for 15-30 Minutes, fresh bunch of patches will be available in software center.

Logs that can be used in for Troubleshooting :

locationservices.log =>This log is used to check the correct software update point has been detected by the client , to check the management point and distribution point entries.
wuahander.log => when the software update scan cycle initiated, Windows update agent will contact WSUS for scanning and if is successful,a state message will be sent to site server confirming that,software update scan is completed successfully which can be seen from this log.
windowsupdate.log => If Software update scan is not successful then,you should look at this log for more information. This log Provides information about when the Windows Update Agent connects to the WSUS server and retrieves the software updates for compliance assessment and whether there are updates to the agent components.
Updatesdeployment.log => This log shows the number of updates and deployments being targeted to a machine.
Updatesstore.log =>Provides information about the compliance status for the software updates that were assessed during the compliance scan cycle .
Rebootcoordinator.log =>Provides information about the process for coordinating system restarts on client computers after software update installations.

Changing the path policy of the SCSI lun device using Powercli in Vmware Vsphere Environment

Today my motto is to change the path policy of the scsi lun from Fixed to round robin. It’s always a pain to change the path policy of the scsi lun device, it takes hours of time to change the path manually in case if we have the large environments of say 2000 ESXi and with more than 400 Devices connected with the Esxi.

so we used some Powercli and create a loop to perform the redundant task well in crisp words we tried to automate this task which could save hours of manual works

Here in the above code I am calling the list of ESXi Host in the file named as hostfile.txt and passing it to the variable $server and this will create an array of characters over the variable $server , Each character represents Esxi hosts on devops terms, then each host is passed on to the $i variable and loop is created using foreach. This is the logical flow of the script.

Now Moving ahead core functions of the script are the below one :

Get-ScsiLun -VmHost $i -CanonicalName "naa.6006*" –disktype disk | where {$_.MultipathPolicy -ne "RoundRobin"} | Set-ScsiLun -MultipathPolicy RoundRobin

Here Get-ScsiLun -VmHost $i -CanonicalName "naa.6006*" –disktype disk connects to the host and checking with the lun disks that has “naa.6006” with the disk type of disk.

And where {$_.MultipathPolicy -ne "RoundRobin"} represents and sorts the disk that are not RoundRobin and this function is like filtering out the outputs

Finally the above one will identify the SCSI luns and Disks which not set with Roundrobin, now its time to be reactive by making the changes to Lundisk paths to RoundRobin using Set-ScsiLun -MultipathPolicy RoundRobin , Voila Amigo we have changed the Storage Path policy from Fixed to Roundrobin.

Rejoin a Computer to domain without Restart using powershell

There are three methods to rejoin the computer to domain without restart

Method 1:

Test-ComputerSecureChannel -Repair -Credential (Get-Credential)

When the above command is executed it will prompt for username and password and enter the domain credentials and result should show as true then the machine is re-added to domain.

Method 2:

netdom resetpwd /Server:DC /UserD:DomainAdmin /PasswordD:Password

The above command should be executed in the command prompt under administrator prompt.

Method 3:

Reset-ComputerMachinePassword -Credential (Get-Credential)

When the above command is executed it will prompt for username and password and enter the domain credentials and result should show as true then the machine is re-added to domain.

A heap-based buffer overflow was found in __nss_hostname_digits_dots(), which is used by the gethostbyname() and gethostbyname2() glibc function call. A remote attacker could use this flaw to execute arbitary code with the permissions of the user running the application.

Apple is expected to continue its September tradition of the past few years by unveiling the iPhone 6 and a smart watch on Tuesday. The devices reportedly will add mobile payments to compete with companies like Amazon and Square that are using the new technology.

The iPhone 6 and smart watch will use near field communication technology to allow users to buy things by scanning their devices on sensors in certain stores like the Apple retail shops, coupled with tokenization that generates a one-time use payment code, according to industry blog Bank Innovation.

This combination may boost convenience and decrease fraud, but linking payments with mobile phones also raises privacy concerns. Apple’s addition of a fingerprint scanner to its iPhone 5S last September sparked concern about granting the tech giant greater access to users’ personal information.

The iPhone 6 also will have a larger display to meet growing consumer demand for bigger screen size and an easier browsing experience on phones. A U.S. patent granted to Apple indicates the smart watch may be called iTime.

Companies are trying to make devices fashionable, in part to make up for the perception that wearables can’t yet rival the convenience of a smartphone, says Carolina Milanesi, chief of research at market analysis group Kantar Worldpanel ComTech. Milanesi expects Apple’s watch to have a fashion design that appeals to men and women, but the image included in the patent resembles the basic detachable watch band available as an accessory for the company’s iPod nano.

Competition on wearables comes from companies including Google, which unveiled its Android Wear operating system earlier this year. The system includes features like voice search and fitness monitoring, and operates on wearables designed by Intel and Motorola.

Sixthsense is a wearable gestural interface device developed by Pranav Mistry, a PhD student from MIT that augments the physical world around us with digital information and lets us use natural hand gestures to interact with that information.

How to make your own sixth sense device?

You must be desperate to get your own sixth sense device. It is not available for sale so you cannot buy it from anywhere. The only option you have is to make it yourself. Yes, You can make it yourself!
SixthSense prototypes cost approximately $350 to build (not including the computer), the main cost being the micro-projector. Don't feel disappointed if you can't spend $350. You can still build the software and play with it for free.
Sixth sense device's software is now open source. I appreciate this move from Pranav Mistry, but the source code is full of bugs and exceptions as it is yet in beta version. I have edited the code to make sure it is compatible with both Visual Studio 2008 and Visual Studio 2010.

Compiling and running the software component

The sixth sense device runs on windows platform and majority of the code is written in C++ and C#. Make sure you have Visual Studio, Direct X, Adobe Flash player (active x) and MS Outlook installed on your computer.

You first need to download the following source code(zip file) and extract it. If you don't want to compile the software and save time then you can directly download the already compiled Sixth Sense software binary(.exe). If you download the exe file then skip steps 2 and 3.
Download Sixth Sense device source code
Open WUW01.sln (which is present in the folder "code"). If you are using VS 2008 then instead of opening WUW.sln, open SixthSense\code\WUW01\WUW01.csproj
Press F5 to debug it. If you debug it successfully, a black screen appears with a little square box on the right just hover your mouse around it and you will find Option tabs such as Camera, Tokens and Apps.
Note: If you do not have the DIRECTX installed on your machine ( as stated in the requirements ) , it doesn't make any difference. Just comment out the following line nos. 41, 42 and 74 in the WUW.cs file. This works beacuse only a matrix class of the DIRECTX namespace is declared in the code but never used. So you can safely comment out these lines and remove the DIRECTX references.

Camera:

Here you can select the camera you want to use from the drop down options.
If you are having multiple cameras you can select from those option or if you have single camera it will automatically start capturing.
You can also adjust your camera settings (Brightness,contrast,..etc) by clicking on "Adjust Camera Properties". (Note: Sometimes an exception occurs while clicking on Adjust Camera Properties button)

Tokens:

This version of code uses colored fingertips as markers. One need 4 different colors in order to run most of the Apps. I recommend to use Red, Yellow, Blue and Green (or colors that are different enough). Matt colored tape/objects works better as they have less reflective changes.
When you click on ‘Add Markers’, the screen starts blinking and after 4-5 secs it stops with a still picture so that you can add those markers on your hand as new markers. You can simply drag-select the colored marker on the screen by mouse cursor. Once you have all four markers (O, P, M, and N) added the software will start tracking the four markers. You can set the thresholds to better the tracking. You can save those markers and can reuse in subsequent executions, or can add new markers every time. Check this video.

Apps:

There are three ways to launch any application. Apps tab can let you choose the apps you want to load and run. One can also load apps from ‘Menu’. ‘Menu’ is triggered using Namaste gesture. Once on Menu screen you can choose the App by hand-click (Hand Click gesture works by moving the O marker and hiding P marker.
Test: You can see whether the four markers are being tracked and moving while you are moving those particular markers that is on the fingers.
Draw: The red marker (M) draws when the yellow marker (N) is hidden.When both the markers are visible you can move the mouse pointer to select different colours or eraser etc.
Photo: Make a rectangle with your pointer fingers and thumbs and when the gesture is recognized,the countdown starts Remove you hands from the camera frame to capture the desired photo. (The countdown lasts for 3 secs)
Gallery: Displays the photos that you have taken.
Mail: Displays a list of email from outlook (required that MS Outlook be running for this to work)
Weather: Displays a weather app that can be localised to your area.
Stock: Displays 16 stocks values real time, use the slider at the bottom of the projected display to set the time scale.
Effects: Play with beautiful wavy lines and explore your imagination.
Newspaper: It projects newspaper stories and related videos from Youtube or other web sites,directly onto the surface of the paper.
Book: For book-recognition,the program gets activated with a gesture, and the system snaps a photo of the book, compares it with book-cover images it finds online, computes a match, and retrieves and projects the ratings.
Clock: An Analog clock will be projected by doing a circle gesture.

Hardware Components

Now you have the needed software. Let's check out the various hardware components.

Camera

The camera is the main input device of the SixthSense system. The camera acts as a digital eye of the system. It basically captures the scene the user is looking at. The video stream captured by the camera is passed to computer which does the appropriate computer vision computation.

Projector

The projector is the main output device of the SixthSense system. The projector unit used in prototype runs on a rechargeable battery. The major functions of the projector is to project graphical user interface of the selected application onto surfaces or walls in front.
Suggested Products: You can buy either laser (AAXA - $110, Microvision - $200) or L.E.D (3M MPro110 - $270) projectors.

Mirror

The mirror reflects the projection coming out from the projector and thus helps in projecting onto the desired locations on walls or surfaces. The user manually can change the tilt of the mirror to change the location of the projection. For example in application where we want the projection to go on the ground instead of the surface in front, we can change the tilt of the mirror to change the projection.

Microphone

The microphone is an optional component of the SixthSense. It is required when using a paper as a computing interface. When the user wants to use a sheet of paper as an interactive surface, he or she clips the microphone to the paper. The microphone attached this way captures the sound signals of user’s touching the paper. This data is passed to computing device for processing. Later, combined with the tracking information about user’s finger, the system is able to identify precise touch events on the paper. Here, the sound signal captured by the microphone provides time information whereas the camera performs tracking.

Computer

Of course, you will need a computing device (i.e laptop/netbook). The camera, the projector and the microphone are connected to this device using wired or wireless connection.

“O, how full of briers is this working-day world!” is the famous Shakespearian quote from ‘As You Like It’. External pressures, thorns, obstacles and difficulties aside, how many of us are responsible for unwittingly hampering our chances of career success through our own misplaced and misguided attitudes and behaviours. Below are ten common faux-pas that can ruin a career and should be avoided at all costs.

1. Poor Time Management

Missing deadlines, failing to abide by agreed timelines, arriving to meetings late and generally disrespecting approved schedules is a surefire way to lose credibility and professional respect. Try to value each and every minute on the job and recognize the inefficiencies that arise from procrastination and slovenly time management and the impact these have on the organisation as a whole.

2. Failure to Deliver on Promises

A promise made should be a promise kept if your professional credibility is to remain intact. Avoid making promises you cannot deliver on. Dress for Interview Success...

While the college campus may be the perfect forum in which to exhibit your flair for the latest in fashion style, the interview is not the place to do so. With very few unusual exceptions, sandals and sweatshirts are out. Oxfords and business suits are still in. A necktie is still a fact of life in interviewing. Even though many companies have relaxed the internal company dress code, interviews still follow the conservative standard. Don't buck the trend.

Unfortunately, most college grads are woefully underprepared with proper interview dress. They feel they can "get by" with what is already in their wardrobe. Usually not. Dress for the world outside college is quite different from the campus scene. Remember that stylish is not conservative. You should be doing the talking, not your clothes.

This is not to say that you need to go out and buy a whole new wardrobe. Go for quality over quantity. One or two well-chosen business suits will serve you all the way to the first day on the job and beyond. Then, when you are making some money (and have a chance to see what the standard "uniform" is for the company), you can begin to round out your wardrobe. For now, no one will fault you for wearing the same sharp outfit each time you interview. If you desire some variety within a limited budget, you might consider varying your shirt/blouse/tie/accessories as a simple way to change your look without breaking your wallet.

For those of you who need a quick review of the basics, follow these guidelines for successful interview dress:

Men and Women

*Conservative two-piece business suit (solid dark blue or grey is best)
*Conservative long-sleeved shirt/blouse (white is best, pastel is next best)
*Clean, polished conservative shoes
*Well-groomed hairstyle
*Clean, trimmed fingernails
*Minimal cologne or perfume
*Empty pockets--no bulges or tinkling coins
*No gum, candy or cigarettes
*Light briefcase or portfolio case
*No visible body piercing (nose rings, eyebrow rings, etc.)

Men

*Necktie should be silk with a conservative pattern
*Dark shoes (black lace-ups are best)
*Dark socks (black is best)
*Get a haircut; short hair always fares best in interviews
*No beards (unless you are interviewing for a job as a lumberjack!)
*Mustaches are a possible negative, but if you must, make sure it is neat and trimmed

If you are still not sure how to dress for the interview, call them and ask! That's right--call the employer. But this is one time when you do not want to call the Hiring Manager--instead, ask to be put through to Human Resources and say:

"I have an interview with _____ in the _____ department for a position as an _____. Could you please tell me what would be appropriate dress for this interview?"

Sure, you run the risk of someone in HR thinking you are a social imbecile, but that's a lot better than having the Hiring Manager distracted by inappropriate interview dress.

While many work environments have shifted to business casual as the work standard, business suits are still the interview standard. When in doubt, it is almost always better to err on the side of conservatism.

One final note on interview dress: while it goes without saying that your interview clothes should be neat and clean, very few interviewees give the same time and attention to their shoes. Shoes? Yes, shoes. I am aware of at least one Corporate Recruiter who forms first impressions based solely (pardon the pun) on shoes. This person does not have a shoe fetish--he subjectively judges that those who pay attention to details like their shoes are also likely to be diligent in their work life. And it is not just that person's opinion. Many have said that you can judge a person by their shoes. You will find that many ex-military officers (many of whom have found their way into management positions in corporate America) are especially aware of a person's shoes. It is not enough to be clean, pressed, and ironed. Make sure your shoes are conservative, clean, and polished.

16 ways technology is mapping the universe

Each year, we gain a slightly better understanding of the nature of the universe and our place in it.

FOR MOST OF US, the mapping technology we use on a daily basis is limited to dash-mounted GPS units.
No disrespect — I mean, just 10 years ago we were dependent on hard-copy road atlases to get where we were going; cutting-edge meant route-finding in Mapquest and then printing off the pages.
But as you read this, hundreds of teams of scientists are working with vastly more complex technologies to map everything from the far reaches of the universe to the most infinitesimally small particles within it. Just a few weeks ago, astronomers using the still-under-construction ALMA observatory (pictured above) made a major discovery about the nearby Fomalhaut system — basically, that it probably contains a bunch of Earth-sized planets.
What follows is a listing of similarly momentous discoveries about the makeup and layout of our universe, and descriptions of the latest technologies in astronomy, particle physics, and marine science that have made them possible.

1. The next generation: James Webb Space Telescope

The Hubble and Spitzer Space Telescopes have been rocking it for 22 and 9 years, respectively. They’re responsible for producing the incredible deep-space images we’re all familiar with, some of which are included below. But Spitzer has already exhausted its reserves of liquid helium, required for its primary operations, and Hubble is only expected to last another two years. James Webb is their successor.
With different phases of construction underway in 17 countries, the James Webb Space Telescope is scheduled for completion in 2018. Its design features 18 gold-coated hexagonal mirrors, which will focus light from super-distant target sources and capture high-res visible and infrared images. In theory, this means it will be able to see the most distant objects in the universe, such as the first stars and galaxies to form following the Big Bang.
In the picture above, “NASA engineer Ernie Wright looks on as the first six flight ready James Webb Space Telescope’s primary mirror segments are prepped to begin final cryogenic testing at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, AL.” Functionality must be tested in conditions similar to those experienced within James Webb’s target orbit, 930,000 miles straight up.

Worlds Smallest Petrol Engine:

Scientists have created the smallest petrol engine in the world ( less than a centimeter long not even half an inch ), small enough to power a watch or any small gadget. The mini-motor, which runs for two years on a single squirt of lighter fuel, is set to revolutionize world technology.It generates 700 times more energy than a conventional battery. It could be used to operate laptops and mobile phones for months doing away with the need for charging. Experts believe it could be phasing out batteries in such items within just six years. The engine, minute enough to be balanced on a fingertip, has been produced by engineers at the University of Birmingham.
At present, charging an ordinary battery to deliver one unit of energy involves putting 2,000 units into it. The little engine, because energy is produced locally, is far more effective. One of the main problems faced by engineers who have tried to produce micro motors in the past has been the levels of heat produced. The engines got so hot they burned themselves out and could not be re-used. The Birmingham team overcame this by using heat-resistant materials such as ceramic and silicon carbide.
Professor Graham Davies, head of the university’s engineering school, said: We’ve brought together all the engineering disciplines, materials, chemical engineering, civil engineering, and mechanical engineering. What better place to have the second industrial revolution in nano-technology than where the first took place, in the heart of the West Midlands.
