DIY Fall Felt Garland

I saw this idea on Elise's Instagram a long time ago.... like, at Christmas ;) She made a super cute Christmas garland out of felt and twine. Felt and twine. That's it. SO incredibly easy (and cheap!). I decided to make one out of Autumn colors (and yes, I have Christmas colors to make a Christmas one as well).

Basically, I bought a 1/4 yard of 6 different fall-looking colors of felt. I cut them into 1" strips (so, 1"x 9" each) and then tied them on jute twine. Just a simple tie, not knotted or anything. At first (like Elise said), it didn't look like much and I was honestly thinking "Oh my goodness, this looks horrible". But it really did come together and I love it! I made an 8-foot garland and had enough felt strips left to make another 5ish-foot garland.

I love how it looks sitting on my buffet behind some other Autumn decorations :)

Food: Pumpkin Crunch Cake

I love that at this time of year it's all about pumpkins ;) I came across this recipe for a Pumpkin Crunch Cake and was intrigued, so I made it one rainy weekend. It was absolutely amazing. The perfect amount of sweet and savory, and of course, pumpkin.

Pumpkin Crunch Cake - adapted slightly from ParentPretty.com

1 box yellow cake mix
1 can (16 oz.) pumpkin
1 can (12 oz.) evaporated milk
3 eggs
1 cup sugar
4 teaspoons pumpkin pie spice
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup chopped pecans
1/2 cup chopped walnuts
1 cup melted butter (Salted will give it a more savory taste, unsalted will keep it sweeter. I've used both and like each way!)

Whipped topping

1 cup heavy whipping cream

2 Tbsp. Sugar

1/2 tsp. vanilla extract

Preheat oven to 350F. Grease a 9X13 pan.

Combine pumpkin, evaporated milk, eggs, sugar, pumpkin pie spice and salt in bowl. Pour into prepared pan. Sprinkle the dry yellow cake mix evenly over pumpkin mixture. Sprinkle chopped pecans and walnuts over the cake mix. Drizzle melted butter evenly over everything.

Bake for 55 minutes or until top is turning golden brown. While cake is baking, make whipped topping. Combine cream, sugar and vanilla in medium bowl and mix with a beater until stiff peaks form. Refrigerate until ready to serve.

Cool cake completely, cut and serve with whipped topping. Refrigerate leftovers (if there are any ;)).

May 8, 2014 was the last time I blogged here. Almost 18 months ago! My goodness a lot has happened since then. We got a *surprise* that we were expecting a new little one -- I had a very, very, difficult pregnancy, but thankfully our sweet baby is here all safe and sound - she was born January 28, 2015 - Ruth Margaret (after my mama :)). We moved from our home of 7 years -- Wake Forest, North Carolina to southwestern Virginia in June of this year. We are settling into our new home and enjoying our new community.

My heart has been aching to get back into blogging and my shop.

Though I have not been present here, I have been maintaining my shop and updating it here and there. I'm super excited about a recent update - some fun Gratitude/Autumn journals, paper packs and ephemera packs.

Mother's Day is this weekend! A few years ago I shared this DIY "10 Things I Love about You" on my blog and it has been super popular (shared on Huffington Post, through Whole Foods Market, Babble, and many more places!). It's an easy and fun project that "kids" of all ages can do for mama - using a printable and finding bits and pieces of papers to put together. I recently created a custom journal for a customer who is planning her wedding. She wanted a large book to put in wedding planning mementos, notes, letters from her mama and future mama-in-law, and other bits of memories of her engagement time. She wanted a 50 page, 6"x8" journal, and for it to have a vintage-ey feel, and with her colors - mustard yellow, rose pink, olive green and pastel colors. I knew this would be a fun book to create :)

I combined vintage papers (cookbooks, dictionaries, books, ledger, etc) with new papers and Bazzill cardstock, some vellum confetti-filled pages, envelopes and overlays. I added embellishments like bunting, ribbon weaving and other die cuts to the pages, along with sewing a bunch of the pages. I added a quote from their wedding invite to the front, along with some punched circles and a heart. I then layered it over mustard-yellow polka dot paper and a vintage foreign text page and added in burlap for texture. Below are all of the page spreads (50 pages!) - so lots, and lots (and lots) of photos ;)

I am so, so happy with how it turned out! :) And now to go make myself one ;)

Last night for dinner I made quiche lorraine (one of our faves). Since it is kind of a breakfast-y meal, I like to pair something sweet with it - usually I make some of these fabulous cinnamon rolls, but I didn't have all of the ingredients (and had not planned ahead ;)). I knew I had some apples.... and a puff pastry a friend had left for me after a party awhile back.... so I started thinking --- apple turnovers! This was the first time I've ever made these and they were delish.

Typically, I try (keyword) to make most everything from scratch - but I was on a time crunch and had the puff pastry. I did some research and found a recipe to try making my own next time here.

I found a recipe, adapted it a little and we loved how it turned out!

Apple Turnovers - adapted slightly from allrecipes.com

1 Tbsp. lemon juice

2 cups water

2 Gala (or Granny Smith) apples - peeled, cored and chopped into bite-sized pieces

1 Tbsp. butter

1/2 cup brown sugar

1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon

1-1/2 tsp. cornstarch

1-1/2 tsp. water

1/2 (17.25 oz) pkg. puff pastry

Icing

1/2 cup confectioner's sugar

1/2 tsp. vanilla extract

1 Tbsp. milk

Pull puff pastry from the freezer and allow to thaw on countertop until easy to handle - about 30 minutes. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.

In a large bowl, mix together lemon juice and 2 cups water. Place chopped apple pieces in mixture and set aside (this will prevent them from browning).

Melt butter in medium skillet over medium-low heat. Drain water-lemon mixture from apples, and place apples in skillet with melted butter. Cook for about 3 minutes. Add brown sugar and cinnamon and continue cooking for about 2-3 minutes, stirring frequently. Meanwhile, mix cornstarch and water in a small bowl until cornstarch is dissolved. Add cornstarch mixture to the skillet and stir to combine. Cook for 2-3 more minutes until sauce thickens.

Unfold puff pastry into a square and cut in half vertically, and then in half horizontally - so you will have 4 squares. Scoop apple mixture onto each square and be sure to divide evenly among each square. Pull one corner of the pastry over the the other diagonally so you have a triangle (see picture of finished turnover). Place on a baking sheet covered with parchment paper.

Bake for 20-25 minutes in preheated oven. While turnovers are baking, combine icing ingredients - add more milk to reach desired consistency - remember that you want it to drizzle over the turnovers easily, not be a huge glob of icing ;)

After turnovers are done baking, transfer to cooling rack and allow to cool about 10 minutes. Drizzle glazing over them and serve! Enjoy!

Tis the season for weddings! I recently finished and shipped another wedding book to a sweet couple - Cristina and Nicky. They are having a beachy wedding and their colors are a gorgeous purple, ivory, sand, and teal. This book was so, so fun to create and I loved adding in a burlap-type fabric paper to the cover. I recently created and shipped another wedding book! This was truly one of my fave books that I've made - I loved the colors, the burlap, the key. The bride-to-be's bridesmaids are wearing royal blue dresses with hot pink shoes - so fun! It will be a rustic yet elegant wedding - thus the burlap :) Thank you, Christina and Phil for letting me create your book for your special day! :)

food: cinnamon raisin bread

For years I have loved a good loaf of cinnamon raisin bread. For years I have tried making my own and failed. Almost every.single.time. (seriously!). My loaf always comes out with a huge hole in the spiral filling (while still good and edible, it's kind of difficult to spread with honey and eat without the honey dripping all down your hand ;)). I came across this gorgeous looking loaf on pinterest and decided to try again. The loaves (it made two) came out perfect, ya'll. Perfect. We ate one loaf in one evening. It was that good.

I tweaked the recipe a bit (ingredients and process included) - I ended up dividing the dough into two loaves and I think we finally have a go-to cinnamon raisin loaf of bread! Yay! This bread is perfect lightly toasted with a drizzle of fresh honey on it. Enjoy!

This recipe does take pretty much all day to make. The dough requires two rising times of about 2.5 hours each and then baking time. But it's well worth it. So worth it.

Cinnamon Raisin Bread - adapted from It's My Side of Life

1 cup Milk

6 Tablespoons butter
2-1/2 teaspoons Active Dry Yeast
2 whole eggs
1/3 cup Sugar
3-1/4 cups Flour
1 teaspoon salt

For filling:

3 Tbsp. butter, softened

1/2 cup raisins

1/3 cup sugar
2 Tablespoons Cinnamon

For topping:

1 Tbsp. butter, melted

1 Tbsp. sugar

In a small saucepan, heat together milk and 6 Tbsp. butter. Mixture should start bubbling with tiny bubbles, but NOT boil. Remove from heat immediately, set aside to cool to warm. Add yeast and stir gently. Allow yeast to proof (bubble up into a foamy mixture) for about 10 minutes.

Meanwhile, in a medium bowl, mix together 3-1/2 cups flour and 1 tsp. salt. Set aside. In a large bowl, beat together eggs and 1/3 cup sugar until thoroughly combined (use a hand mixer). Add yeast mixture and continue to beat until well incorporated.

Add half of the flour mixture in, and beat on medium speed. Add in the other half and continue to beat -- it gets super hard to beat at this point because the dough is so thick, so I kind of lifted my mixer out of the bowl a bit to just try and mix up a little of the mixture at a time. Add a couple of tablespoons of flour at a time if the dough is too sticky - do NOT add too much flour or it will become too dense :(

Once I was finished mixing, I lifted the dough out of the bowl, used olive oil (or extra melted butter) to coat the bowl and then put the dough back in. Cover with plastic wrap and allow to rise 2 to 2-1/2 hours in a warm and draft-free place. The dough should double in size.

While dough is rising, combine 1/3 cup sugar, 2 Tbsp. cinnamon and raisins in a bowl. After it is finished rising, pour the dough (do not punch down) onto a floured surface. Using a rolling pin, gently roll dough into an 18"x24" rectangle. Use a rubber spatula and spread the softened butter onto the dough. Sprinkle with the cinnamon-sugar-raisin mixture.

Beginning at a short end, roll the dough tightly. I pulled the dough and stretched it taught as I was rolling it - I think this is what helped prevent the big hole in the center of my loaf from happening ;). Pinch the seam to seal. Cut the dough-log in half so you have two loaves. Tuck and pinch under the edges. Place each in a greased loaf pan. Brush melted topping butter (1 Tbsp.) on each loaf, gently. Sprinkle with sugar. Cover with plastic wrap and allow to rise 2 to 2-1/2 more hours. Loaves should puff up, but they won't be huge.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Once loaves have risen, place in oven (remove plastic wrap). Bake for 30-35 minutes, until top crust is a dark golden brown and loaf sounds hollow when tapped. I started checking on mine every couple of minutes at about 25 minutes. Immediately remove from pans and place on a cooling rack. Brush with a little bit of extra butter if desired. I let mine cool like this for about 10 minutes and then turned them onto their sides (once again, trying to prevent a huge hole from developing in the loaf ;)).

To store (if there's any left ;)), wrap tightly in plastic wrap and keep in a cool, dry place.

working on: vintage sheet quilt

I recently bought a bunch of beautiful vintage sheet charm squares from this fabulous shop on etsy during an end-of-the-year sale. They are fabulous. Beautiful, beautiful vintage patterns. I've been wanting to make a quilt and these squares seemed like a perfect way to go about doing that.

I kept the squares 5" and simply laid them out. It's a great project for doing in bits and pieces. Just piecing it all together, sewing straight seams and then ironing the seams. So little by little, it is coming together.

I work on it when I have a spare minute - it's easy to pick up and do for a minute and then leave to come back to later.

I've finished the quilt top and am now ready to make my "quilt sandwich" and start the harder part of quilting it.

Hoping to wrap this one up soon. Excited to have a new blanket to snuggle under on these cold days!

One Little Word 2014: Choose

Happy New Year! Happy 2014!

My word for 2013 was make. And man, was it a good word for me. I am a creative person. I like to create. I like to make. I easily carried it through the entire year of 2013. Not only was I making tangible things, but I was also making the best (and sometimes not) of situations I was experiencing - mostly dealing with postpartum depression that followed me into the year from 2012.

This year my word is choose. This word easily came to my mind when I started thinking about this new year. This word can encompass so much to me, personally. I have so many things I am thinking about surrounding this word.

I can choose how to handle situations, both good and bad. How am I going to react?

I can choose how I want to spend my (very little) free time. Sitting around doing nothing? Or having a quiet time. Or working on making and planning my blog and shop. Or folding that extra load of laundry ;)

I can choose to make a plan. To plan ahead with things like grocery/meal planning. To plan out blog/shop stuff.

I can choose to have joy. I can also choose to not. My prayer is that I would choose the former. That I would strive to seek Christ in my daily life. Because really that's what is the most important. That is what will bring the joy, through all circumstances.

Here are my words and thought processes from 2013 (and here and here), and from 2012. I'm so incredibly excited for this year and what it holds.

Handmade: I Love You So Much Card

My hubby and I celebrated our 10 year wedding anniversary (!!!) this weekend :) I, of course, wanted to make him a card and knew that it had to include confetti. So I made up a cut file and cut it out on my Silhouette, attached a clear transparency with adhesive, and then sewed it to a piece of kraft cardstock - I put the confetti in after sewing up three sides and then sewed it shut :)

He loved it :)

Christmas Confetti Cards

I recently shared a DIY for these Mini MiniBooks and they were popular in my shop, so I decided to do a Holiday Edition. I had a customer ask if I could create just a 3"x4" Confetti Card, like the cover of the Mini MiniBook. So I did! :) These are much like my Confetti Windows that have been a super popular item in my shop (only these are sewn to paper), and like the covers to a lot of my wedding books over the years.... just smaller :) These are perfect for PL. Perfect. So all you PL'ers - these little cuties are now available in my shop :)

Mini MiniBooks: Holiday Edition

I made a few more of the Mini MiniBooks using Holiday scrapbooking papers. I have a bunch of vintage Christmas cards and children's books (damaged, but some pages were salvageable!), and included those in each of the books :) Super easy to make yourself - think old Christmas cards, or wrapping paper adhered to cardstock, a couple sheets of Christmas-y paper, and cardstock and you'll have a lovely little book to jot holiday notes and memories in. These are also available in my shop.

I have a ton of paper scraps laying around (yes, I have a paper problem ;)) from various projects. I also have a ton of Project Life cards that I've collected over time (at this point, I do not do Project Life - I reallllly want to try it come January 1. I love the idea of it. Love it). So what better to do than put them into a little album?! I made these up over the course of 36 hours and love them. I put these in my shop, but plan on making a few more for family and friends for Christmas. Perfect to throw in your purse or bag and jot a note or thought.

Any types of paper would do - old junk mail envelopes deconstructed and cut down, card stock or scrapbooking paper (if you have a local craft store, you would only need a few sheets -- you can get 12 pages out of one 12"x12" piece of scrapbooking paper. Use some chipboard (or cut down a cereal box :)), and finish off with binder rings (available at office supply stores - or I have some available in my shop here), or use ribbon! Voila! A cute little book that's fun to jot in :)

30 Days of Thankful

Happy November! Today begins a month-long project of documenting a gratitude each day - 30 Days of Thankful. Last year, I worked on this throughout the month and loved it. I shared a bit here on the blog, but mostly just kept a list of my thankfuls here in my workspace.

I keep a gratitude journal anyways, but I love a specific list that I keep throughout this month. A month that ends with Thanksgiving (for those here in the US), and is right before the Christmas season. It's a good time to focus on the gratitudes. The little and big blessings that come our way each and every day. I believe that even on the difficult days, there is always a thankful, even if it is tiny.

Won't you join me on this month-long project? Just keep a pad of paper and pen handy. Jot down a gratitude each day. Keep a journal. Create a mini album. Whatever you want it to be. Just go for it!

I shared this photo a couple years ago. So it's an oldie but a goodie. Too fun not to share on this Hallowee day :) This is from Halloween 1986 with 2 of my sisters (my 3rd sister hadn't been born yet!)- I was a magenta crayon. One of my most fave-est memories of getting dressed up to go trick-or-treating. My awesome mama made us Crayola Crayon costumes from poster board. What a treasure of a memory!

This was also probably the only year I wasn't dressed up as a fairy princess, ballerina or something else that was pink and frilly ;) Go here to see last year's pic from 1985 ;)

Finishing up details for a workshop I am teaching this weekend at my church :) Including making this Gratitude journal for a door prize.

Packing up the entire family for a trip to Hilton Head, SC for a little vacation. Leaving late Saturday. So much to do. So glad to go.

Recovering from a terrible headcold I had this week. Not so much fun.

Glad it is finally chilly out. I love Fall. Love it.

Looking up more recipes for soup and crockpot meals.

Almost done with Holiday Journals. They will be in the shop soon.

Swimming in ideas in my head for new projects.

Grateful for this season.
