As someone who lives with Celiac Disease, who considers herself a foodie (or at least a gluten-free version of one) and who does a fair amount of traveling, I know, too well the cocktail of fear and research that goes into a well-curated, safe, and delicious gluten free-trip. I love to explore my own city’s food scene, and have a few safe, tried and true eateries that treat my immune system right. I research food blogs every time I travel, so for anyone traveling to Nashville with gluten-free needs or for my fellow gluten-intolerant-Nashvillians, this one’s for you!

Disclaimer, I know that symptoms of Celiac Disease and the effects of cross contamination affect everyone differently. I wouldn’t wish a glutening on my worst enemy, so know that I wouldn’t steer you wrong. These suggestions are just from one gluten-free body’s response. Proceed at your own risk!

Of course you can safely (physically and emotionally) visit AMOT (A Matter of Taste – Nashville’s only completely gluten-free restaurant) because when’s the last time you had fried chicken that didn’t make you sick? And Vegan Vee's - a totally gluten free/vegan bakery that makes magic baked treats out of restricted ingredients. But if you want to veer further off the path, let me tell you about a few other gems.

Breakfast:

Red Bicycle has fantastic gluten free crepes. There are sweet and savory options for the gluten free. I’ve frequented this place dozens of times and have never gotten sick. It’s my go-to breakfast spot because believe it or not, breakfast glutenings have been the most severe (who puts flour on eggs? I swear people are!)

Coffee/Pastry Shop:

The Post East is tucked away in a cute neighborhood in East Nashville. They have all sorts of hot beverages and juices, but they also have a spread of nearly all gluten free breakfast treats. From quiche to sweet potato biscuits to cinnamon rolls – yes you read that, cinnamon rolls, the Post East is a great little spot.

Deli:

Also located in East Nashville is an understated place called Tower Market Deli. This New York Style Deli will make the gluten-y, the carnivores, and east-coasters, and yes, even the gluten free happy! Make sure you note that you have an allergy when yo order and they’ll carefully warm your Sammy on tinfoil and mark it all up with an *allergy warning.

Tacos:

What would we gluten-free types do without Latin food? Seriously! Thank goodness for one food group that’s typically naturally gluten free. Gluten usually creeps in when gringos do, so beware some of the trendy taco joints (here’s looking at you places serving hot chicken tacos). Visit El Tapatio on Nolensville road for the very best best tacos in Nashville. You’ll find the second best tacos in all of Nashville at Mas Tacos Por Favor. There are only 2 tacos you need steer clear of (and they are fried, so they are a dead giveaway). Leave room for elote and a margarita.

Burgers:

Your best bet for delicious and safe burgers in Nashville is Burger Up. You can’t have the fries if cross contamination is an issue for you, but their salads are so darn tasty you won’t feel too excluded. Shout out to the turkey burger atop the house local!

Indian:

My favorite restaurant in all of Nashville is Chauhan Aleand Masala House. The food is life-changing, the atmosphere completely unique, and the service is fabulous. Lots of Indian food is naturally gluten free (insert the praise hands emoji) and Chauhan is no exception. The servers start their interaction with your table by asking, “Any allergies I should be aware of?” Which is the question that makes all Celiacs want to weep with joy. They are incredibly knowledgeable about cross contamination and will steer you to safety. I’ll leave you with two words: Chicken Bhunna. Thank me later.

Thai:

Smiling Elephant is your friend when most soy sauce is not. This place understands what ingredients are ok and which ones will ruin your day. Their food is absolutely delicious to boot.

Vietnamese:

I’m pho glad that most Vietnamese food is naturally gluten free. I haven’t meet a bowl of pho I couldn’t eat in Nashville. Head to VN Pho & Deli off Charlotte Ave and thank me later!

Small Plates:

Nearly everything on Little Octapus’ menu is gluten free. Can you imagine going out to a small plate meal with friends and actually getting to share everything (or almost everything if they aren’t kind friends)? Flavorful, unique, and safe makes this place a nice treat meal out!

Local, Seasonal, Divine

I don’t actually know how to categorize Rolf and Daughters. At one point, I think they described themselves as “gourmet peasant food” but as their current website won’t corroborate my odd memory, let’s go with “Also my favorite restaurant in all of Nashville” (I can have two). RAD is an experience. The food, drinks, and service are top notch. Their menu rotates seasonally so I can’t tell you which items to order. They’re very knowledgeable about cross contamination and will steer you to safe ordering.

Heyyyy y'all. So, I have to fill you in on some fab info: I had the chance just a few weeks back to attend Amerigo Nashville's Farm Dinner Series -- and it was AMAZING. Five courses (!) served with wine and drink pairings (!!), in Amerigo's private dining room. Each month, Chef Steven visits the Farmer's Market to source the freshest veggies, fruits, meats and cheeses for the series, creating a unique menu highlighting fresh flavors of the season. I love a good, hearty Italian meal, and this was one of the best I've ever had in Nashville.

A Night Out in Quintessential Nashville: Dinner, Drinks, and the Grand Ole Opry

Rotiers
Don't have time to make a rezzie and want a solid place to grab a bite? Rotiers is a third-generation family owned Nashville institution, offering one of the best burgers (get one on French bread) and milkshakes in the city.

Brown's Diner
Similar to Rotiers, yet so completey different. Founded in 1927 in an old trolly car turned restaurant, this greasy spoon offers pitchers of Budweiser and delicious diner-style burgers.

Samurai Sushi
The youngest of the list and one of the best sushi joints in town, Samurai has been slinging rolls for over a decade.

Showtime

The Grand Ole Opry

The Opry is the longest-running radio show in the world, and a visit to the show itself perhaps the most quintessential of Nashville experiences. Now, you can snag a VIP backstage tour + hang with the stars. A guide will take you backstage just before showtime, giving you the rundown, letting you check out the dressing rooms, and even take you on stage when the red curtain rises for the first performance of the evening. Y'all, it is so fun. As someone who grew up watching the Opry with my family, every time I step backstage it's incredibly special, and if you've never been it's an absolute must.

New year, new you -- right? For me, 2017 began with the always-so-popular idea of kicking off the year being much more mindful of what I'm putting into my body. I quickly learned, thanks to one of my FAVORITE local nutritionists McKel Hil of Nutrition Stripped, that there are so many delicious and simple ways to make healthy adjustments to my lifestyle. Who knew it didn't have to be so painful? Not me, and my favorite food is biscuits and gravy. #Southern.

To share the wealth, I sat down for a quick Q&A with McKel. We talk overall nutrition, she dished advice, and shared ways specific to Nashville that can help keep our lives in balance. Thanks, McKel!

What inspired you to start Nutrition Stripped?

I started Nutrition Stripped purely as a creative outlet in 2013 with absolutely no idea what social media was let alone blogging; I just wanted to share my expertise in nutrition for free, to as many people as I possibly could to help them live well. I knew first hand what feeling "bad" felt like because I had my own health issues in high school into college from migraines to serious digestive issues; the blog was an outlet to share what I learned through my experiences to help others. It still amazes me having readership in 180+ countries! I live, eat, breath the NS lifestyle and I'll always be asking myself "how can I help more people truly "get" what it means to feel really really good?"-- and I'll do more of that.

What are some general thoughts on healthy eating/lifestyle? Why is it important?

Make it simple. The whole ethos behind NS is making nutrition and wellness simple, efficient, and backed by science while merging my integrative philosophy on whole body health including mental/emotional/spiritual wellbeing.

Top 5 ways you can improve your overall health?

Take an internal inventory of where you are in life, access why you eat or live the way you do, what are choices you make each day that take you closer or further to your health goals. Knowing the "why" behind your behaviors is crucial, then you can start having fun tweaking your nutrition plan, exercise, sleep, and what I like to call "optimizers" to take your health to the next level.

What kind of results should we look out for?

This is going to sound cliche, but balance. More so than finding that sweet spot between living healthfully 90% of the time and having some fun the other 10%, but often my clients will have more energy, better sleep, glowing skin, stronger hair, they'll FEEL amazing which is more important than anything.

Great Nashville restaurants to dine out? Any specific meal suggestions?

My favorite hands down is anything from Rolf and Daughters, the pheasant salad with salmon from EPICE in 12th South, and then chicken dish from Public House -- Trevor is a machine. Our food scene is incredible, we definitely need more health-inspired places from LA to make there way down South; but for now, it's a good start and I never have a problem eating really healthy and delicious food.

Obviously we (I) like to dine out a lot in Nashville. What are some ways we can be conscious when ordering while out?

First, don't go out to eat starving, meaning have a snack a couple hours before so you'll be more biologically/hormonally in balance and inclined to eat mindfully and with some portion control in mind. Second, go for vegetable heavy entrees and then add quality proteins on the side along with healthy fats (which are pretty abundant when dining out -- think olive oil). Third, be sure to drink a lot of water, especially if you're having cocktails/glass of wine alongside- then I'd recommend having 2 glasses of water per 1 cocktail and limit yourself here in general. Last but not least, enjoy it! Going out to eat is a great example of how nourishing our bodies is far more than just fuel to our cells, it's emotional, social, and it's a fun way to connect with the people we love. So find balance and let loose a bit knowing that.

Your favorite healthy "whole" recipe?

Honestly, when I cook 90% of the time it's very simple meals from foods that I've cooked and prepped the weekend before so putting meals together takes me less than 10 minutes! I use the principles I created in the NS Society to make that happen with my busy schedule. I swear by meal planning or else I'd always be eating out and not staying on track with feeling amazing (including clearer skin, brighter eyes, and shiny hair- all things I used to struggle with when my diet was out of whack). Why did you create the Nutrition Stripped Society: A Guide to Master Meal Planning?

The NS community was asking for something like this for years! As a Dietitian Nutritionist, I teach meal planning with clients all the time; but I wanted a way to teach as many people as possible meal planning skills for life using simple tools, a yearly meal plan, 100+ healthy recipes, recipe and workout videos, and support from a global community. It's really an amazing community, we have people from all over the world supporting each other with staying on track, sharing their simple meals, and so many resources to help guide people. The Society enrollment is opening SOON! From April 25-May 1 only -- there's only 1 week out of the entire year we allow new people into the program.

Now..Time for the recipe!

Strawberry Soaked Oat Porridge

A sweet soaked oat porridge using almond milk, rolled oats, cinnamon, and fresh or frozen strawberries all in one bowl.

Makes 1 serving

INGREDIENTS:

1⁄2 cup rolled oats
1 cup unsweetened almond milk
1 cup fresh or frozen (and thawed) strawberries, mashed with the back of a fork
1⁄4 teaspoon vanilla extract
Dash of cinnamon
Garnish options: bee pollen, fresh mint, fresh strawberry slices, sliced bananas, maple syrup, coconut, etc.

INSTRUCTIONS:

1. In a small mixing bowl or serving bowl, combine oats, almond milk, vanilla, and fresh/frozen strawberries that have been mashed with a fork or pureed and stir to combine. Set at room temperature for 2 hours or overnight in the fridge (8 hours). The oats will absorb the almond milk, enjoy warm or cold. Serve with garnish options if desired.
2. You can make multiple jars of this for a quick breakfast on the go or during the week, making sure the lids are tightly closed.

Hands down my favorite place to get my cocktail on in Nashville. An expertly crafted and always evolving cocktail menu, housed in an old factory boiler room -- making it the most fabulous atmosphere to drink in all of town. You 100% cannot miss this spot.

Sinema

Fest on a fabulous 3 course pre-fixe menu ($85pp) which includes decadent items like Champagne and Saffron roasted lobster, New York Strip, Macadamia crusted elk filet, crab cakes, and cherry stuffed chocolate cake. Good food paired with one of my favorite restaurant ambiances in town = a Valentine's Win.

360 Bistro

West siders -- if you haven't checked out 360 Bistro in awhile, you're missing out on one of the best spots in your neighborhood. To the rest of us: it's worth the drive out West! Valentine's Day will feature a four course, pre-fixe menu for $70pp. Courses include Maine lobster salad, blood orange and champagne zabaione; Short rib boudin balls, red aioli, chicory; and Filet, roasted mushrooms, foie hollandaise, and Chocolate Decadence.

ACME Rooftop Dance Party

A free Rooftop Valentine’s Day show for those single and lookin’ to mingle. ACME's Valentine’s Day dance party with Myzica will certainly be filled with the hottest folks taking in the hottest view in Nashville. Did I mention it was free? Oh yeah. Have fun.

Fin & Pearl

Have you been to Deb Paquette's newest venture in Green Hills? Well, here's the perfect opportunity to spoil yourself along with your love with a choice of four starters, two salads, four entrees and two desserts to build their own four-course meal. Chef Deb's globally-inspired options include snapper crudo with pink peppercorn vinaigrette; roasted cauliflower with pea pesto (which so happens to be my favorite appetizer in Nashville); grilled tuna and octopus with quinoa and smoked lima bean espuma; filet and short rib with pesto potatoes; and chocolate-peanut butter mousse with milk chocolate crunch. $80pp.

Etch

At one of Nashville's most fab spots this Vfalentine's Day, choose from four starters, two salads, four entrees and two desserts. Dish selections include smoked duck and parsnip bisque; non-conventional Caesar salad with poached farm egg and oysters; grouper and clams escabeche with cana de oveja ravioli; chuck filet with celery root griddle cake; and lemon tart with brown butter shortbread crust. $90pp.

Salt & Vine

This one is for you, ladies. If you'd prefer to ditch the fancy prix fixe Valentine’s Day menus and celebrate all the single ladies of Nashville this year -- Salt & Vine is the place to be. They’ll be bumping Beyonce radio, Prosecco will be flowing, and handing out complimentary, house made chocolate covered strawberries for the hell of it. Y'all. I love love love wine, but often can be intimidated by the sheer amount of selection when heading to pick up a bottle at my two favorite stores in Nashville, Salt + Vine bottle shop or Woodland Wine Merchant.

Thanks to sommelier and Salt + Vine owner Mattie Jackson, I have a list of the hottest wines in 2017 -- not only can you show up to your dinner parties in style, but also impress your friends with your abundance of wine-expertise. Cheers!

Hot Wine + Trends to Look for in 2017

Non-Champagne Sparklers – With sparkling wine at a near 40% increase in sales in 2016 and Millennial consumers surpassing Boomers as the primary demo for wine consumption, value bubbles will be the name of the game in 2017. Frothy French crémants and boutiquey Proseccos will continue surging as the younger crowd brings bubbles out of the celebration only category and onto their daily tables.

Recommendations: Simonnet-Febvre Brut Rosé & Sommariva Prosecco di Conegliano-Valdobbiadene Superiore Brut.

“Alt Whites” – The ever disparaged “Altnernative Whites” category that I hate on lists but love in my glass. This ubiquitous catch-all for white grapes other than the big 4 – Chard, Pinot Grigio, Sauv Blanc, Riesling – proves vastly over-looked and undervalued. Not only does it tend of unveil value to big boys can’t, but the breadth of styles here is endless. Txakolina from Spain. A spunky, edgy white born and bred for sushi lovers. Gruner Veltliner. A vegetarian’s dream that makes the most bitter brussels taste sweet. Roussanne. Chardonnay with flavor.

Recommendations: Saline Txakolina, Gobelsberg Gruner Veltliner, St. Cosme Cotes du Rhone Blanc.

Unoaked Chardonnay – In the wake of the 90s gargantuan Chardonnay trend, modern consumers are now saying, “I’ll take the Chard, hold the butter.” Despite much common assumption, the creamy, buttery, rich experience is not inherent to Chardonnay itself, but simply to how and where it’s made. For bright, clean, mineral driven styles, seek out French Macon Cru or Macon Villages as well as select stainless steel versions from California.

Recommendations: Henri Perrusset Macon Villages & Riverbench Bedrock Chardonnay (Santa Maria Valley).

Low-Alcohol Domestics – It’s hard to speak low-ABV domestics without sharing the story of Broc Cellars. This young Berkley-based producer preaches the ultimate antithesis of loud, boozy California style wines with a movement toward delicacy and balance that the younger market is thirsting for. Gentler alone and a more gracious partner to food, watch for a cleaner, “hands-off” winemaking movement to sweep in 2017.

Recommendations: Broc Cellars Zinfandel.

Loire Valley – Red, white, sparkling. Lusciously sweet to bone dry. France’s Loire Valley offers a variety of styles equally as wide as the 170 miles of vineyards that snake along the banks of its own Loire River. Whites of Muscadet show a light, spritely Summer wine. Sancerre and Pouilly Fume, the edgy, mineral face of Sauvignon Blanc. And Vouvray a dynamically plump but refreshing white, not to be missed during fall root veggie season. Cabernet Franc and occasionally Pinot Noir lead the bright, tart, food friendly reds of the region. Value and versatility is the name of the game in Loire.

Recommendations: Michel Brégeon Muscadet Sevre-et-Maine, Reverdy Sancerre, Charles Joguet Chinon.

Beaujolais Cru – Beaujolais, the historical bastard of Burgundy, will continue to gain market speed in 2017 as one of the wine world’s best kept secrets. Pinot Noir lovers of both French and New World affinity seem to find common ground in this fruit driven, playful red with its subtle mineral backbone. The 10 Cru, or premiere village sites, for Beaujolais’ Gamay grape, range between $18-30 with equal if not greater depth than Pinots at comparable price points.

Recommendations: Domaine Chanrion Cotes de Brouilly.

Vermouth – While some may project the nation-wide cocktail resurgence as a bridle for the wine industry, ancient fortified wines and wine based cordials should expect a consequential resurrection. And vermouth may be this category’s dark horse. Whether classically bittered with Piedmontese wormwood, or sweet and barrel aged to counter smoky mezcal or scotch-based cocktails, vermouth will be this year’s chameleon cordial.

Recommendations: Bèrto Ross da Travaj (red) & Baglio Baiata Alagna Bianco (white).

Last weekend was certainly a hot one, but it did not keep fans from across the country from making the pilgrimage to Franklin for the second annual Pilgrimage Festival. Two days of music, art, and food -- and attended by over 15,000 folks. It was my first year attending, and y'all -- I LOVED it. Despite the heat, the festival was incredibly well executed, from the art vendors, to staff, to the top-notch talent.

Speaking of talent, this year's lineup included Daryl Hall & John Oates (!!), Beck, Jason Isbell, Grace Potter, Kacey Musgraves, Violent Femmes, The Arcs, Cake, Anderson East, and more. Only in Nashville.

Speaking of Nashville... In typical Nashville fashion, celebs abounded. Lily Aldridge and Caleb Followill were there to catch Beck, Miranda Lambert danced side stage during boyfriend Anderson East’s set, and Haley Williams of Paramore hung backstage to support friend Kacey Musgraves. N’Sync’s Chris Kirkpatrick (!!) and GRAMMY-Award winning producer Dave Cobb were also spotted partaking in festival fun. Sadly, I heard of no (Pilgrimage Festival partner) Justin Timberlake sightings... There's always next year, I suppose?

Held at Bicentennial Capitol Mall State Park, Music City Food + Wine Festival is my favorite festival of the year.

Y'all. Last weekend was perhaps my favorite weekend of 2016.
...and 2015.
...and 2014.

Music City Food + Wine Festival, one of Nashville's premier foodie events put on by Food and Wine magazine and the Kings of Leon. Mingle and meet with your favorite chefs at the Grand Tasting (unlimited bites and drinks), attend culinary demos, boozy tasting sessions, and listen to the best music in town. Food + Booze + Music = my absolute favorite kind of combination.

Let's get to it the best way I know how to recap: via a photo round-up of the weekend.

The Food:

Chefs from all over Nashville and the country descend upon Nashville to create a taste of what's hot in the culinary scene today.

Perhaps my favorite bite of the festival: a biscuit from soon-to-open brunch hotspot Holler & Dash, topped with whipped peanut butter, popcorn, and candied bacon. So. Fab.

How gorgeous is this salad from Watermark? Image via my hero Kristin Luna, media extraordinaire, at Camels & Chocolate.

One of my top spots to dine in town, Lockeland Table, never fails to impress—and their liver pate topped with peach jam is decadent.

What's your favorite bar-b-que joint in Nashville? Many folks go with Martin's BBQ Joint—and, it certainly resides at the top of my list. This was happening all weekend, and the end result was insane.

Williams-Sonoma featured a pastry tent, showing off the skills of so many of my friends. Chef Charles Hunter of The Salted Table nailed it with his smoked sweet potato tarts.

I am a sucker for sweets, especially these Macaroons from Utterly Nashville.

Back at the grill, Martin's threw on some Octopus. So delish.

The Booze:

The booze is constantly flowing, everywhere. From local vendors Nelsons Greenbriar Distillery and Blackberry Farm to Bulleit Bourbon, you will never be thirsty. The gents above are a handful of the best bartenders in town, from cocktail hotspot Patterson House. They were mixing up tiki-themed beverages which were by far my favorite liquor taste of the day. The Party:

Kings of Leon taking the stage at Harvest Night, along with Holly Williams, Hunter Hayes, and Charles Kelley. Only in Nashville.

Harvest Night is held on Saturday eve, against the backdrop of the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum in the Musicians Walk of Fame park. A perfect setting.

It seems Music City Food + Wine Festival is becoming well known for the DJ + dance parties. We wrapped up the weekend with the Kings of Leon gents and Tim Love, DJ'ing, pouring, and dancing to 90s music.

I'd call it an epic ending to an epic weekend. Counting down the days until 2017!

Q&A with Mr. Dave Barnes!

Dave Barnes is the total package. Funny, genuine, incredibly good looking, and man he can write (+ sing) a song. I was thrilled to sit down with him recently to discuss his upcoming headlining Ryman show (tickets available here), new album Carry on San Vicente, and of course his Nashville faves.

How about we dive right on in?

EN: Tell me a bit about the process of writing and recording Carry On, San Vicente. The story behind it, if you will.

DB: It's crazy to say, this is my 14th if you include four EP's and two Christmas records... I've never done a record like this, and, it's probably one of the most fun albums I've ever written. It felt like something was happening in a different part of my brain. I put some heavily constructed demos together (which, he mentioned, were heavily influenced by the Eagles' greatest hits) – I wanted everything to have a place and a part. One of the biggest takeaways from the Eagles albums is that everything really has a place in their songs. You don't wonder what something is doing, you know what it's doing. So I met with (co-producer) Ed Cash and played him some of my songs, and he said "if you do this, we have to do it together." He's a huge Eagles fan. I hired a bunch of guys who were friends of mine, gave them the vision for it – thankfully, everybody was super excited and able to understand what I was trying to do. We got in there, and recorded it in like two days. It was super fast.

EN: Is San Vicente an actual locale? I Googled, and only found a healthcare clinic.

DB: It's kind of an area slash a road in LA. But a healthcare clinic is actually what it's about.

EN: There aren't enough songs about the healthcare industry. It's the perfect representation of Nashville - healthcare, and music.

DB: This is the conversation I wanted to have about the record. It's really why I wrote it.

EN: What are your favorite cuts on the album?

DB: The title track to me is arguably my favorite. They all are very special – but I think that one feels the most to me what I was trying to do. From the lyric, to how it feels, to the instrumentation. That's the one that if people want to hear something from the album, I tell them to check out. I really love it.

EN: What does it mean to you to headline and take the stage at the Ryman, one of the most revered venues in the world?

DB: I don't know how to put it into the words. It was something that was so extraordinary to me that it never really was in my sight. Of course I dreamed to do it, but it never really felt very realistic. Going there to see bands like Coldplay, John Mayer, Paul Simon, all these bands – was like, this is a place for them. As I started to see more and more bands that were less and less 'major label' bands, I started to think, hold on a second – does that mean I may be able to play there? So I called my manager... he called me back with dates, and I had to pull over and lay in a field. I'm so excited. I love the Shadowboxers and Lucie (Silvas, opening the show), I love that it is a Nashville night, that was important to me. It's a Nashville night at the Ryman. This set is the best set I've had by far – this is the set I want people to hear. We're playing the best songs we can.

EN: OK – in honor of Cowboy School of Dave Barnes (a hilarious series on Dave's Youtube channel), let's go with a few shotgun style questions which cover your fave Nashville locales*.

Burger:

You're not going to believe this, but I have to. I love Martin's Burger. And then, believe or not, I love the bar at Whole Foods. The Pharmacy is amazing.

Taco:

I'll tell ya. I gotta go with SATCO. I have a lot of affection for this place – I have so many memories there.

Outdoor activities:

You'll often find me running along Belmont Boulevard. I love that stroll, the extrovert in me really enjoys it.

Steak:

Kayne Prime, that place is bananas.

Date night:

Last date night was Moto. That was so good.

Coffee Shop:

I really really like The Well, and I really really like 8th and Roast.

If you have a friend coming to town, and they want one meal in Nashville – where is it:

I think Kayne Prime is my favorite bang for your buck, you can't go wrong. You can order anything there and you'll walk away thinking it was amazing. But, if you're looking for a quick meal, I really think the best place is 12 South Taproom. It's really good food... They have a salmon dish there that is one of my top 2 or 3 meals in Nashville. It's consistently good.

"Off the beaten path" spot:

Oh, what a night. Had so much fun covering and attending the Nashville stop of #LiveWhollyTour, an open mic competition held at the historic Bluebird Café! I had the chance to catch up with Brad after the show for a quick chat. Naturally, we talked Nashville, Bluebird, and the impact this opportunity has had on his future.

How does it feel to take home the grand prize from the #LiveWhollyTour stop in Nashville?

Incredible. There was so much talent at the Bluebird that night. It was a real honor to be chosen by the judges. And the $500 grand prize... I mean who couldn’t use $500? I’m working on an album, which can be a costly process, so that’ll be a huge help financially.

The Bluebird Café is such an institution for singer/songwriters in Nashville. What does it mean to you to be able to play the stage that launched the careers of so many legends – from Garth Brooks to Taylor Swift?

That was my 7th time playing The Bluebird I believe and it never gets old. It truly is an awesome venue with so much history. The audience is always 100% attentive and respectful of whoever is performing. I’d never turn down a chance to play The Bluebird; it’s a privilege.

Tell us how “Good Go Bad” – the song you performed and ultimately won with, came about. What inspired it?

"Good Go Bad” is about that girl whose definitely not the best idea for you and who you doubt is looking for any type of commitment, but you’re just sorta powerless to her charm. Basically, she’s the player, you know it’s not gonna end well, but you just can’t say no. I may have found myself in a similar situation once or twice… Anyway, I wrote it with my roommates, Trey Wehrmeyer and Johnny Dibb, our sophomore year at Belmont. We wrote the music before the lyrics, so once we had that dark groove going, I knew it wasn’t gonna be about some ideal happy relationship.

Nashville itself is home to so many up and coming musicians like you. How has living here impacted you and your career?

There’s so many good writers and players in Nashville.. Too many. But I love it. It drives me to work harder every day. There’s this feeling that someone’s always out there working harder than you, and that can really push you to be your best. On top of the talent, there’s plenty of ways to get connected with publishers, labels, management, etc.. I’ve been to so many great shows and gotten to meet some really great people. It’s an awesome community and I’ve absolutely loved my past 3 years here.

LGBT Friendly Guide to Nashville

Despite being located in the South, as a 9+ year resident of Nashville, I can personally attest it is a city which warmly welcomes both its LGBT residences and guests. An incredible, vocally supportive mayor (who married the first gay couple in Nashville when it became legal in 2015, who's office promptly arranged a memorial following the tragedy in Orlando) stands alongside so many businesses and residents alike who strongly support equality amongst all.

I recently sat down with Nashville's LGBT Chamber of Commerce and Loews Vanderbilt Nashville to discuss this idea of creating a LGBT-friendly itinerary for Loews' #TravelForReal campaign, and through said conversation hand-selected businesses and compiled a three day agenda of my faves who strongly support the LGBT community. This was initially designed as a "staycation" for LGBT Nashvillians but certainly can be used by all locals and visitors, as well!

Brunch at Mad Donnas
One of Nashville's most popular Brunch spots and one you definitely do not want to miss. Don't let the line scare you -- you'll be through it and casually brunching in no time. Brunch features reasonable prices, 2-for-1 Mimosas, a Bloody Mary bar, their fabulous burgers, Cap'n Crunch French toast, and more.

Dinner and Cocktails at Mason's

The hotel-restaurant stigma is completely thrown out the window with Mason's restaurant and bar, located in the lobby of the Loews Hotel. Chic atmosphere, top-notch service, and delicious food and beverage menus round out one of my favorite spots in town. Watching your figure? Erin Oprea, Carrie Underwood's personal trainer, has you covered. Oprea herself worked with the Mason's team to create delicious (healthy) options on both the food and cocktail list -- just look for the barbells next to the menu item. Like me and prefer to go all out? I highly recommend the Lamb meatballs, Shrimp and Grits, Ancho Spiced Berkshire Pork Chop, Brussels Sprouts, and Springer Mountain Farms Chicken. Don't forget about dessert too -- the pastry chef is certainly bringing her A-game.

Local Adventure 1 - A Night in Downtown Nashville

Well hey y'all!

I wanted to start posting thoughts I have here and there so fellow locals (and non-locals) can have a few ideas of what to do for night out on the town with friends. I, for one, oftentimes struggle coming up with eventful ideas so as they happen in my world -- I'll jot them down for you.

Let's start with what we did last Saturday eve.

Escape Experience Nashville

I've heard rumblings over the past year or two of Escape Games happening in Nashville -- yet never had the lovely opportunity to try it out for myself. Thankfully, that changed last week and my goodness y'all -- this is awesome. Choose between breaking out of prison in C-Block or solving clues to earn your part of your crazy Uncle's Will in The Inheritance.

Strategy, word problems, secret passageways (!), and investigation work combined for one of the most fun hours I've spent in quite some time. There is so much thought and effort that goes into these games and the spaces they occupy, you must check it out ASAP. Future rooms to include surviving a disease which wipes out 90% of the world's population in Vaccine, preventing a World War in The Bunker, and more.

DeSanos Pizza

All of the brainpower you use to escape can conjure up quite the appetite. Just down the street is one of my fave pizza joints in town: DeSanos. They offer authentic, drool-worthy Italian-style pizza (so Italian, their ovens and ingredients come from the motherland themselves). A recent addition gives you plenty more room to sit and enjoy your pizza, and BONUS -- you can BYOW (bring your own wine).

Bar Sovereign

After-dinner cocktail time (obvs.) There's a new bar in town and you MUST give them a try. Again an overdue experience for me to take in, Bar Sovereign is pure bad-assery -- so don't make the same mistake. Fabulous cocktails, service, and killer atmosphere. I love the subtle entrance (very speak-easy) and the overall vibe is killer. Very much looking forward to making this a regular watering hole.

I sat down to chat with fabulous local trainer to the stars (ahem. Carrie Underwood), Erin Oprea, who recently released her first book The 4x4 Diet. Outlining her diet, exercises (most of which you can do on-the-go), meal plans and recipes -- the book is a perfect solution for anyone looking to streamline their waistline + lifestyle.

Our chat covers Erin's personal faves of how you can be social and still be healthy in Nashy. Want legs like Ms. Underwood? Read on.

What inspired you to go into personal training?

There are quite a few reasons actually. Let me list them!

-I have a love for fitness
-I have a love for movement
-I am hyper but it is slowly abating as I grow older. Not gone yet.
-My father was an active man and got me addicted to soccer early on that transitioned into all kinds of healthy activities like long distance biking.
-I am at my happiest when my clients get a good workout and start seeing results. Mentally and physically. Their happiness and self confidence increases dramatically.

Why Nashville?

This is where I was living when it all started and I have been witness to the great rise of this fantastic city.

I want legs like Carrie. Where do I start?

Consistency and diet are key. One of the main drives I had to put The 4x4 Diet out into the world is to make sure that people understand how important nutrition is in combination with movement to develop that strong lean body. Carrie understands this and works very hard to get herself where she wants to be. She is not the only one allowed to have a smokin' body, so are you! Go get it (my book and the legs)! My book will help you get the healthiest version of you.

4 x 4 diet -- why is this method the best? How did you come up with?

This is the best way to combine healthy eating and working out without compromising the fun to be had in life. Don't give up what you love, cut back on the portions that don't allow you to be the healthiest version. Don't have an hour for the gym? Do a couple Tabatas before work, 1 at lunch and a couple more when you hit home. You have four minutes, you have to put time in for your own health and happiness.

I constantly am watching and researching ways to work out. For my clients, yes, but mainly for myself! I love challenging my own routines and will take any idea and craft it into a workout that is safe and effective. This goes for meals as well. All the recipes in The 4x4 Diet are from years of experimenting and adjusting so that it meets my own standards. I still do it to this day and even adjust the book's recipes to my current taste with different spices and portions!

So I'm social. And always busy with work. 4x4 diet seems like it can accommodate this lifestyle -- is it true?

Absolutely! The key is a little planning. My prep day is imperative to the meals I eat throughout the week. When people eat poorly it is usually becasue they lack the time to prepare a long winded recipe. However, if most of the main pieces are ready then it makes it SO much easier to just grab and go! Just baking a bunch of well-seasoned chicken allows you to grab it quickly for meals or even a snack. Plus you can get a Tabata done in the time it takes to reheat your prep foods! Try to get out of that one!

Keeping the 4x4 diet in mind (for the most part)... let's talk Nashville recs.

Date Night

Date night for my husband and I usually revolves around walking in between restaurants. Steps while digesting small plates puts you in the 4x4 wheelhouse! Kale salad at St. Anejo with salmon added (light to no cheese and dressing on the side). Walk to The Farm House for some great seasonal vegetables and head to Germantown for City House's for some broccoli salad. If it's my indulgence meal I will definitely hit up their Bellyham pizza. One of our favorites. You can get up 15-20,000 steps in a night like that. Romantic!

Happy Hour

The healthiest drink option is my own! Grab the Rosarita at Mason's Bar inside Loews Vanderbilt. They have collaborated with me to not only create a delicious, low sugar cocktail but also some absolutely yummy dishes. Look for the barbell on the menu so you KNOW it's Erin Oprea approved!

Dessert

This is tricky territory. For a special night that is not 4x4 Diet approved yet still magical, you have to go try the Apple Fritter Bread Pudding topped with ice cream and salted caramel at M Restaurant inside Cummins Station. Please don't eat all of it, it is NOT healthy :).

Casual Meal out on the Town

I love Bricktops. Often after work engagements downtown I'll join my husband to finish off the workday by sitting at the bar and having the Ahi Tuna Salad with the dressing on the side. Make sure to ask for extra greens because I love my greens. Don't tell them I told you to do that, they'll hate me :).

Place to Work Out (Outdoors)

Yes Please! Behind the Capitol building is a large sweeping set of stairs that is really fun to run up and down. A big plaza at the top of them allows for an area to do an entire workout. Don't know what to do? Stick around for 5 minutes and you'll see someone there getting their fitness on and steal their ideas. Better yet, bring my book and make the most of your time!

Any Other Fun Ideas for Exercise in Nashville

The Percy Warner loops are fantastic to run and hike through. Not only will you meet some great dogs but there is that fantastic set of steps to hit up for a good lung burner.

Steadfast Commons - The Newest (+ fab) Downtown Nashville Restaurant/Coffee Destination

A beautiful new addition to the Nashville dining/culinary/coffee/drinking scene, Steadfast Commons -- a fabulously unique and beautifully executed spot -- should be immediately added to any local foodie's list of ‘go-tos’ when finding thy-selves downtown. The gentlemen behind the uber-popular coffee shop Steadfast in Germantown quietly opened the doors to this newest venture in January.

Commons features Steadfast roasts, teas, homemade pastries and lunch items during the day (yum), and transitions to a dinner and cocktail-focused menu in the evening. And y’all, I for one am SO excited to have a new option downtown to hit before shows. So, yay.

Now, for the dirty (and quite important) deets. The team have again enlisted acclaimed chef Julia Sullivan (Per Se, Blue Hill, Pinewood Social) to create the market-driven food menu, which expands upon the culinary program she created for Steadfast in Germantown. Sullivan is joined in the kitchen by chef Megan Jay (Silly Goose, Dinner Lab).

Cocktail specialist Troy Sidle (a veteran of Pouring Ribbons and The Violet Hour and founder of Canvas Bar Design) has created a cocktail menu exclusively for Steadfast Commons. To capitalize on the excellent coffee program, created by co-founder Nathanael Mehrens, many of the drinks utilize Steadfast flash chilled espresso in bitters, liqueurs, syrups and sodas (and let me tell you, are all incredible). Wine and beer will also be available.

Next time you find yourself downtown, I’d recommend popping in to take a peek. Because coffee. And good food. And dranks.

Skyville Live Presents Cyndi Lauper, Kelsea Ballerini, and Ingrid Michaelson

Update:

Ya'll. The show was incredible.

Lauper opened with her take on the 1959 classic "Heartaches by the Number," and continued the night with hits "Time after Time" and "True Colors". Ingrid's cover of "Can't Help Falling in Love"was certainly one of the most epic musical moments I've experienced in town. Ballerini killed the country-classic ballad "Make the World Go Away," a song written by the legendary Eddy Arnold (and previously covered by Martina McBride). Several duets and number ones later, the ladies closed the night with "Girls Just Want to Have Fun".

Nashville Restaurant Week 2016

One of my favorite weeks in Nashville is nearly upon us —offering the perfect chance to try some of our best local fare for quite a reasonable price. I've compiled the list of participating restaurants and linked to menus—many of which are offering specials only available during this week. Yum.

So what are my picks?

The East Sider in me will likely keep me on this side of the river, so, Holland House or Rumours East will probably be my go-tos. I'm also a huge fan of Yellow Porch and Tin Angel's offerings (especially for the price). And y'all, the Chicken Fried Chicken at Saffire might just be worth the hike down South...

What is your fave spot on the list, or are you planning on trying somewhere new?

Josephine is definitely not a newby to our ever-so-bustling restaurant scene in town, and has long held a top spot on my favorite brunches list (because, sticky buns). However, dinner service has always left me wanting a bit... more.

Until now.

Thanks to a lovely friend for gifting a Community Hospitality gift card over the holidays, we decided to venture back to Josephine on a random weekday night, and y'all. I couldn't have been more delighted. First, we did not have a reservation—which we didn't think would be an issue as we typically love to sit at the bar, but it wasn't an option this evening as the place was packed. We checked in with the hostesses, and were promised a table in 20 minutes. One fabulous cocktail later we were seated. Perfection.

So now to the fun part: What we ordered. There were two of us, and we opted to share a few small plates and an entree, plus dessert.

To Drink:

The No Quarter, a stirred cocktail which offered ideal flavors for the season:
Apple brandy, rye, Italian vermouth, Angostura, Peychaud's, scotch rinse.

Small Plates:

The Pretzel Bread. A solid staple since opening served with their house made mustard. (And also, pictured above.) Phenom.

Rabbit Dumplings. Quite possibly my favorite, the standout dish for the night. Incredibly rich and so flavorful.
Dumpling, rabbit, apple cider, apples, ham, sage.

Brussel Sprouts. Because, well, you have to. Josephine's are some of the best in town.
Brussels sprouts, dried cherries, orange, peanut vinaigrette, rye crumb.

Entree:

Pappardelle with Lamb. Amaze. The rich, hearty pasta that was exactly what I needed on a cold winter evening. Pappardelle, Border Springs lamb, parmesan.

Dessert:

A rule of thumb when dining out with me: Always save room for dessert. At this point, we'd established quite a rapport with our server—as she had nailed all of her recommendations in the meal thus far. So, we decided to venture a bit outside of our comfort zone with the Angel Food Cake, but OH. It was absolute heaven. Rich, sweet, sour, so many flavors. Love, love, LOVED it.

A perfect night accompanied by wonderful service, atmosphere, bevvys, and food. What more can one ask for?

Thank you thank you, Nashville Symphony, for having me out to the 2016 Symphony Ball. Miranda Lambert, one of my most favorite artists in town, was honored with the the 2015 Harmony Award, and I had the privilege of (briefly) meeting her.

Y'all. She was stunning. "Project Runway" star Johnathan Kayne designed Miranda's striped, strapless gown for the white-tie event. The award is presented every year to an individual who exemplifies the 'harmonious spirit of the Nashville music community'.

"I just feel really ingrained in Nashville right now, like I feel really part of it," Miranda said. "And so this just solidifies everything that I've been feeling just being here for the last couple of months."

What a fabulous night.
