Dr. Natarajan was working as the Medical Director of a busy hospital. He had a spacious office with good interiors. But somehow the place did not look impressive. There were pictures of different Gods hanging on the walls. On one side there was a collage depicting photographs of some family function. On his table, Natarajan had kept a laminated photograph of his three children. On one side of his table lay a tipoy which had small curios like a big shell, small wooden box, small Ganesha idol, brass boat etc.

It is possible to know a lot about the personality, assertiveness, spiritedness and communication behaviour of an individual by observing the non-living objects displayed at the office or cabin. Different individuals depict different items based on their intrinsic nature. These items vary from calendars, planners, personal items, personal slogans, patriotic slogans to graphs, awards or motivational posters. From these objects, we can more or less accurately guess the degree of assertiveness and spiritedness within them. Assertiveness is the degree to which a person’s behaviour is forceful or directive. It is aimed at taking control in a situation. Spiritedness is the degree to which a person’s behaviour is emotionally responsive or demonstrative with gestures, facial expressions and body language. These two dimensions produce four different styles or personalities depending on which of these two aspects predominate. These individuals can be driver (leader or motivator), expressive amiable or analytical.

Meticulously dressed in his crisp attire, Charles entered his office much before the scheduled working time as he wanted to run through his presentation and confirm its duration once again. He had called a meeting of his department colleagues to discuss the performance of Q-1 of the year, analyze the same and plan out the targets and strategies for the second quarter. He looked at the charts hung on the wall of his office with satisfaction. These charts were depicting their performance in a graphical fashion. Knowing his punctuality and perfectionism, Charles’s Secretary Vandana had also come early to office. She checked up seating arrangement for the meeting and also confirmed about timely delivery of coffee and cold drinks with cafeteria manager.

Charles was self contained team leader. His office was always clean and tidy, table well organized and the desk items arranged in a fixed order. There was no excess of furniture or any other item. It was designed for working. Seating arrangement was formal and non-contact.

Charles had analytic working style, so his priority was logic and working out details of the processes. He believed in timely planning as he would hate to handle surprises and unpredictability. Persons having this working style are slow and steady and like to be prepared, precise and correct. They would like to have facts, details and documents as they consider precision, accuracy and specific concern about what is right rather than who is right. Even if 10% of the work force in public sector undertakings has this style of functioning, things would be so much nicer.

Hi Sunil, what are you doing? Come for a cup of tea. I need some company’ Mohan phoned a colleague working in the same office, but in a different section. Sunil was too busy to leave his work so he politely refused. Mohan turned to his junior colleague and asked him how his ailing wife was. Then he told him not to worry about completing the report as no great harm will be done if the completion took 2-3 more days. While discussing performance and efficiency of the employees, Mohan was more concerned about ‘relationship, friendly behaviour and flexibility rather than their efficiency and out-put. At times he took the staff working in his section for a movie or to see some exhibition, at times he ordered for some snacks like pizza for everyone and sometimes he took them to a restaurant for dinner.

Mohan’s working style can be labeled as expressive. These individuals are more spirited and less assertive. They are open, direct and fast, but display flexibility and resilience towards completion of work by displaying their playful nature. They like to give incentives and testimonials and readily recognize acknowledge and applaud good performance. In return, they are also keen on being noticed. What type of office do they prefer? These persons dislike being alone, so they tend to have office which is open, airy and friendly. Seating arrangement indicates warmth and openness and hence somewhat informal. The desk is cluttered with different items and is usually disorganized. The walls display awards, personal slogans or motivational slogans like ‘aaram haraam hai !’ Stimulating posters are also common. Being alone or performing boring tasks irritate them. They are often seen laughing, cracking jokes, humming musical tune or complimenting colleagues – a behaviour which shows their concern about relationship, hence there is fear of delays and deficiencies in their professional performance.

The Council is The Nodal Agency for KPCS

The Council is the nodal agency for the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme (KPCS) in India. It was implemented in India from January 1, 2003 to verify the legitimacy of improt/export of rough diamonds as per UN resolutions and to curb entry of conflict diamonds into the mainstream. GJEPC verifies and endorese data mentioned in each KP Certificate on import of rough diamonds and issues a KP Certificate for each export of rough diamonds.

As part of its obligations under the process, the Council submited its Annual Report for the calendar year Jan/Dec 2010 to the KP Chair before 31st March 2011.

During the Financial year 2010-2011 India issued 2,759 KP Certificates for export parcels and encorsed 23,291 KP certificates for import parcels under KPCS including transactions handled by concerned Special Economic Aones in India.

‘Please be brief, Mrs. Kale. I don’t have surplus time to waste in discussing petty things. I have always believed in achieving our targets. If you have any suggestions for this project or if you have any problems, you can tell me. Let’s not spare any effort to accomplish our mission’ said Anurag and started working on his laptop.

Of the four working styles – driver, expressive, amiable and analytical, Anurag belonged to driver – leadership category. His desk contained some files, clipped papers, stationary items, two books and of course his laptop. One wall of his office displayed a calendar and planner. Another wall displayed an achievement award and a laminated letter issued by the Governor for excellence in management. He had a large size, revolving chair for himself and four smaller cushioned chairs for his visitors. There was a carved partition between the entrance door and his big working table. In short, the seating arrangement was formal, closed, non contact and clearly depicted that Anurag was positioned for power.

Anurag had leadership skills. He was direct, self-contained, and fast in taking decisions with the focus on results. He discussed the issues with his colleagues, gave them options by asking what and when. But eventually he would want to take the control as he always respected results and track record. His personal theme was notice my accomplishments, not me.

Obviously such individuals will not like interferences, pressures and delays resulting due to personal ego, ignorance, favoritism or corrupt practices adopted by persons occupying higher positions or by the politicians. These obstacles results in deterioration in performance, frustration or job hopping. With current working scenario of our country, is it easy for ‘the driver’ to work for public sector undertaking?

Shocking and painful – he chewed up a lot of money, destroyed important documents, indulged in forgery and got the entire ancestral property transferred on his name. Now he has moved the court as he wants me to vacate this house’ Shivkumar was distressed. He was 18 years old when his father passed away. He took charge of the cloth shop which his father has started, looked after his widow mother and younger siblings. Avinash was ten years old at that time.

I have done nothing wrong, always helped poor and needy, I have not hurt anyone, I like very simple and pious life. Then why am I going through this torture? As if this was not enough, Punita has been diagnosed as Cancer breast. As the Cancer has spread, she is unlikely to live beyond six months. During this broth at least I have not committed any sin. Then why me? He was thinking.

Years back when it was difficult to get cooking gas connection, someone had advised Shivkumar to pay ‘on money’ and get the connection without delay. That time he had thought, if I don’t pay, God knows how long I will have to wait. One needs to pay something for faster service, everyone gives. I don’t like it, but this is our system, so I have no alternative. Actually Society, system and the Government are at fault. Finally he paid the bribe and got the work done. This episode was completely forgotten.

When a person starts facing difficulties, he/she gets similar thoughts as Shivkumar. It is neither possible nor fair to establish cause-effect relationship between bribe for gas and the problems faced by Shivkumar. However, it is certain that when we sow seeds, the plant will grow and grant us suitable fruits at an appropriate time.

CBI Arrested Janardhana Reddy

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) early Monday arrested Janardhana Reddy in an illegal mining case registered against his Obbalapuram Mining Company from Karnataka. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) also arrested OMC managing director B. Srinivasa Reddy after raiding his residence too in Bellary and Ananthapur in the neighbouring Andhra Pradesh.

"The arrest is an extension of the internal problems which the Congress has got in Andhra Pradesh. Reddy's arrest appears to be part of the politics being practised by the United Progressive Alliance (UPA)," he said.

Steel Prices Trend Downwards

The general outlook for the Ukrainian steel industry remains positive. Local producers continued to operate at high utilisation rates in August. Shipments to domestic industrial firms were firm. Several trading houses believe that construction demand will soon decrease.

Sentiment within the Indian steel industry has been undermined by the Supreme Court’s decision to halt iron ore mining activities in Karnataka’s Bellary region. Shortages have spread to Maharashtra, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. Planned production targets have been downgraded to conserve inventory. NMDC has been given permission to operate the company’s two Bellary mines to alleviate pressures.

Market sentiment has softened in South Africa. Customers have expressed concern over the latest problem at ArcelorMittal South Africa’s Newcastle steelworks. The producer has declared “force majeure” on shipments from this facility, creating a potential loss of around 400,000 metric tons of steel output. Imports are expected to make up any shortfall in domestic production.

The Mexican steel industry is worried that the USA’s economic problems will spread across the border. Distributor trade is forecast to be unchanged in the third quarter. Underlying demand is expected to be driven by shipments to the automotive and construction sectors.

Life Is Fair

I have slogged for the whole year. No programme, no party, no movie…. Only college, coaching classes and study, study, study. After all these I have just passed. Pritam and his girl friend Tina bunked classes, roamed around, enjoyed life, hardly studied and they both got higher second class in final B.Com. “This is unfair” Tushar groaned.

Our Aparna is beautiful and smart. In spite of studying in medical college she knows cooking, is sociable, but how come we cannot get a suitable alliance for her? We have indicated that we will take care of all the demands placed by the boys’ family. Even then, no success. That tomboyish Minu who has just scraped through B.Sc., wanders about whole day eating pani-puri, bhuttha and stuff like that – an ugly duckling like her got a boy who has passed M.D., the same boy who rejected our Aparna. This is nonsense’ roared Aparna’s mother Gayatri.

Why this? Why me? This is injustice to us, this is not fair, why is God trying our patients, what is my fault? …. We often hear.

Richard Carlson who conducts programmes on Art of Living and enjoying life believes that ‘life is not fair”. It is a fact that everything that happens may not look desirable. If we gracefully accept this reality then only we shall be able to sustain our moral courage. ‘Poor me” ‘Poor fellow’ ‘unlucky guy’, ‘she always suffers’, ‘God is so unkind to them’ and similar words of self pity or so called sympathy for others tend to weaken us. So first thing is to acknowledge that whenever adverse situation is created, it has been planned by Almighty and preprogrammed into our very being. Perhaps God creates certain odd or difficult conditions to train us and increase our coping ability and faith. Our karmic account can be balanced or cleared only by such credits and debits of the blend of good and not so good circumstances. So don’t get elated in good times and don’t feel dejected in difficult times as both are going to pass off. Famous Cricketer Ian Botham has said ‘if you want to succeed, you have to suffer’.

Copper was Little Changed Within a Tight Range

Copper was little changed within a tight range on Wednesday as uncertainty over prospects for further monetary easing in the United States balanced against a positive outlook for Chinese demand and a softer dollar.

Three month copper on the London Metal Exchange traded at $8,855 a tonne in official rings, little changed from Tuesday when it closed at $8,850 a tonne. Some of the strength we are seeing in copper and oil is from the effect that Asia is doing quite well we saw the Chinese PMIs pick up slightly early in the week.

There are some signals that Chinese appetite for metals such as copper and aluminium is improving. Nearby copper and aluminium prices are both trading at a premium against third-month contracts on the Shanghai Futures Exchange.

PM Manmohan Singh Appeal to Anna Hazare

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh saluted Mr Hazare's effort to bring up the scourge of corruption, acknowledged that he had become the embodiment of people's concern and disgust. "I applaud him, I salute him," Dr Singh said, assuring the House that he would do everything he could to clean up the system.

PM Singh used a Parliament debate on corruption to make a direct appeal to Anna Hazare today, requesting that he end his 10-day-long fast. He said Mr Hazare had "registered his point", but his life was too precious.

The PM made clear that in any solution, parliamentary processes could not be given a go by, but that the government was "open to all suggestions and ideas" to ensure "we have the best possible Bill to tackle corruption."

But at the Ram Lila Maidan, Anna Hazare has as yet shown no sign of calling his fast off despite warnings from doctors that he is not in great shape.

Samsung To Launch 4 New Smartphone

Samsung Electronics unveiled on Wednesday four new smartphone models under its flagship Galaxy line to expand it to the mid to low-end segment and grow in emerging markets, as bigger rival Apple prepares a cheaper version of the iPhone 4.

Apple and Samsung emerged as the world's No.1 and No.2 smartphone makers respectively in the second quarter, ending the 10-year reign of Nokia. Samsung sees cheap models costing below $200 accounting for more than half the overall smartphone market by 2015 in volume terms, up sharply from last year's 16 percent.

Its new mid-to-high end Galaxy W will have a 3.7-inch screen, while the mid-tier Galaxy M Pro and lower-end Galaxy Y Pro will be Samsung's first Galaxy models with qwerty keyboards.The fourth Galaxy Y model is an entry-level product aimed at emerging market consumers. Samsung launched its top-end Galaxy S smartphone in June 2010 and its followup Galaxy S II, launched in April this year, has sold more than 5 million units.

Vodafone to Extend Billing Deal With Google Android

Vodafone Group Plc , the world’s largest mobile phone operator, will extend an application billing deal with Google Inc.’s Android system across all its markets to regain lost ground in additional data services.

Vodafone last week unveiled plans to enable payments for Android online services through its own billing system in the U.K. and Germany, allowing clients to pay for applications for everything from music, restaurants and games, to the weather and news, without entering credit card details with Google.

Android, the most popular operating system, accounted for 43.3 percent of the smartphone market last quarter, according to research firm Gartner Inc. Apple had an 18.2 percent share. Vodafone, based in Newbury, England, has also rolled out billing deals with Nokia Oyj (NOK1V) and Research in Motion Ltd. (RIM) In the U.K., the number of games and apps sold since May with RIM has doubled with more than 70 percent of sales from direct billing, Ireland said.

The Rupee Fell by 17 Paise

The rupee fell by 17 paise to Rs 45.80 per US dollar in early trade on the Interbank Foreign Exchange on Wednesday, weighed down by weakness of the euro and other Asian currencies against the greenback overseas and a lower opening in the equity market.

In addition, month-end dollar demand from oil companies also put pressure on the rupee, they said. The rupee ended 4 paise higher at Rs 45.63/64 against the American currency in the previous session on the back of dollar-selling by exporters amid firm equity markets.

Stockpiles of Copper Held in Bonded in China

Higher stockpiles in China, which accounts for about 40 percent of global demand, may curb an expected gain in imports this quarter, hurting prices. Copper on the London Metal Exchange has slumped from a record in February as concern that global growth may be slowing outweighed forecasts for a deficit.

Stockpiles of copper held in bonded warehouses in China, the world’s biggest user of the metal, may have rebounded since June as imports increased amid a lull in manufacturing over the summer. Inventories in the warehouses, which aren’t disclosed, may have gained by about 100,000 metric tons over the period to 400,000 tons, according to estimates from traders and analysts in China including Cofco Futures Co.

The amount of copper held in separate warehouses monitored by the Shanghai Futures Exchange, which is disclosed, has also surged over the past month to reach the highest level since May. Holdings have risen 35 percent since July 7, gaining for five straight weeks to 120,819 tons last week, bourse data show.

Anna Hazare TV channel that he is ready to be flexible about including judiciary in the Lokpal Bill and but will only negotiate with the Prime Minister's Office, Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi or the Maharashtra chief minister Prithviraj Chavan.

He also said that strong judicial acciountibility needed if judiciary is not included in the ambit of the Bill. However, Team Anna wants the Bill to be passed by Parliament by August 30, the deadline set by fasting Anna Hazare.

Reacting to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's proposal for a reasoned debate on Lokpal Bill, Team Anna said the government should ensure passage of the Jan Lokpal Bill by August 30.

Do Not Invade My Territory

Maya went to Newyork to spend some time with her doctor son Suhag. As Suhag’s wife Shashi was also a doctor employed in a hospital, Maya had decided to take charge of cooking as long as she was in Newyork. By doing this, she would spend some time in creative activity and Shashi will get some relief, she thought. But to her surprise, Shashi insisted on doing all the cooking and other work herself. She would cook during week ends and freeze the stuff. Maya did not understand this behaviour. On seeing tired Shashi she used to feel sorry and upset. She again made efforts to convince Shashi to allow her to do at least part of cooking, but Shashi’s reply was ‘mummy, don’t worry. I am managing for last 3 years. You take rest’. Maya failed to understand Shashi’s reluctance to permit her to help. She started feeling workless and worthless.

Be it a busy housewife, daughter-in-law with professional career or a boss in the office – some individuals are adamant on doing everything themselves whether they can cope up or not. Some people enjoy doing this and feel indispensable. Some do not mind it and prefer it that way. There are many who are unhappy doing all the work themselves but do not like others to help them.

Why this mentality? There are three main reasons.

1. Perfectionist attitude and lack of resilience in the methods adopted by others. These individuals insist that everything must be done exactly in the same manner as they have been doing. They feel that others are incapable. In their opinion the end product must also be the same, not worse and not even better. They do not feel like trusting anybody.

2. Like certain animals, some humans are very particular about having their own territory. They resent any invasion. Classical example is a kind and helpful husband who volunteers to cook a dish. But as long as he is working and messing around in the kitchen, he will not allow his wife or anyone else to enter the kitchen. Shashi, perhaps belonged to this category.

3. Fear of success or being displaced, internally competitive attitude and desire to maintain the status of one upmanship do not permit such individuals to take help or co-operation from others and bruise their ego.

Persons belonging to any of the three categories enjoy indulging in self pity as they fail to recognize the benefits of mutual co-operation which can really allow them to enjoy.
