How about people that share the same interests as you? If so, one of the best ways to find those individuals to use online social networking websites.

Social networking websites are often compared to neighborhoods or communities, but ones that are online. If are interested in making use of these popular websites, if you haven't been already, you will need to find a social networking website to become a member of.One of the websites that you may be interested in joining is Orkut.

Orkut, sounds interesting doesn't it? With other popular websites such as Yahoo! 360, Friendwise, Classmates, and MySpace, there are many who wonder how Orkut became the name of this popular online community. Orkut is named after the individual who created it. That man was an employee of Goggle and he is known as Orkut Buyukkokten.

If the name of the website doesn't automatically draw you in, there is a good chance that the website features will. Like many other social networking websites, Orkut has a number of different member benefits.

These benefits are what makes it worthwhile to become a member of this popular social networking website. As popular as Orkut is and as much as you would like to join, there are special procedures that you must follow. Unfortunately, Google does not allow just anyone to become a member, you must be invited.
Current community members are the only ones who can extend you an invite. This means that you should not waste your time trying to convince Google to let you join.

Being invited to join Orkut really isn't as difficult as it may sound. Orkut is so popular that there is a good chance that you know someone, if not personally than online, who can extend you an invite. By performing a standard internet search, you should also be able to find Orkut members who would be willing to extend you an invitation, without even knowing who you are.

Although many internet users refrain from joining Orkut, just because of the invitation requirements, there is a good reason for limited membership. Orkut is a social networking website that is free to use. Unfortunately, free means that many people would wish to use the website. Many online social networking sites, that are free to use, have literally become ridiculous.

A large number of internet users get joy out of creating fake accounts and causing online controversy. Google decided to make Orkut a special membership online website to prevent instances like that from happening.

Orkut, like many other online social networking websites, has a number of different purposes. Of course, the main purpose of Orkut is to allow you to connect with your friends, especially the ones that have extended an invitation to you, but you can do much more than that. Once a member of Orkut, you can easily famialrize yourself with other website members who share the same interests as you do.

This will not only help you make new friends, but it may also result in the finding of your next romantic partner. That is what is nice about Orkut, once you are a member, just about anything is possible.
If you are interested in learning more about Orkut, before trying to obtain an invite, you will want to visit their online website. You can do this by going to www.orkut.com.

10 Secret Ways Of Getting Your Website Listed on Google

These ways of getting listed on google.com ™ the quick and easy way are the fruits of my labor since I started way back in 1993 on the Internet. Here are some things you can do to give your business new life in 2009.

1.Write (or revisit) your business plan:-

You may already have a business plan in place, but with the uncertain economy it’s a good idea to revisit your goals and objectives for the next six months, the next year, the next five years. Make your business plan a living document and update it at least quarterly, or even better, every month. It will help you stay on track and more easily adapt to changes in customer demand.

2.Be known as an expert:-

You know you are an expert, but if you write, speak, and network like one people will automatically associate you with your niche. You’ll make a much greater impression as the speaker at an event than simply shaking hands and handing out business cards. And you can further build expert status by writing articles for publication, having your own newsletter, or starting a blog.

3.Define your niche:-

Many people feel that being more general about what they offer makes them more marketable. Often the opposite is true. Most people want to work with a specialist, and one of the best ways to stand out in a crowded market is to be very specific about what you do and who you do it for.

4.Become (or hire) a marketing expert:-

At core marketing means building relationships, being able to speak clearly about the benefits of your offerings, and having conversations with people who might need your products or services. Search the Web for tips, use Pinpoint to find expert help, and talk to other professionals about the marketing efforts that work best for them.

5.Follow-up with new contacts, maintain connections with current ones:-

You’ve likely collected numerous business cards, but what have you really done with them? Following up is critical to business success. Consider these ways to keep your company in the front of people’s minds:
. Send individual e-mails recalling specifics of your conversation with an invitation to visit your Web site.

.Invite contacts to periodic open houses to see what you do firsthand.

.Distribute a newsletter or blog that builds your reputation as an expert.

.Promote special offers to pique contact interest in what you offer.

6.Provide information in addition to your offerings:-

Build customer trust by providing clear, succinct information about your products and services, with emphasis on the benefits to customers and your expertise in meeting their needs. Providing helpful tips on your Web site where appropriate establishes your credibility and helps customers see how what you do can provide value to them.

7.Keep prices competitive, offer incentives:-

Everyone is looking for a deal these days. Whether it's reducing your prices, offering something free as incentive on your Web site, or providing additional services to customers when they contact you, doing something above just selling your product or service can give you an edge on your competitors.

8.Promote results and benefits, not processes:-

Most people don’t care how you help them reach their goals, as long as you do it with integrity, efficiency, and within their budget. Instead of talking about how you work, be clear about your expertise and the changes people can expect from working with you. Get into the habit of asking clients for testimonials and referrals and consider writing (or hiring someone to write) case studies on successful engagements you’ve had. The most effective promotion comes from satisfied customers.

Clean your computer

Preserve the condition of your system with regular maintenance.

I have a dirty secret. I've never cleaned my computer. Sure, I've dusted my monitor, but I haven't taken off the cover or tried to reach the crumbs lurking inside my keyboard.

"Your computer could fry if you don't keep it clean," says Jonathon Millman, chief technology officer for Hooplah Interactive.

Dust clogs the vents behind your computer, which causes your CPU to heat up—and heat is the biggest cause of component failure in computers. Regular cleaning could save you costly maintenance fees down the road.

Keep your computer in tip-top shape by following Millman's guide to a spotless computer system.

Preparation

You'll need:

• screwdriver

•can of compressed air (available from computer dealers or office-supply stores)

•cotton swabs (do not use a cotton ball)

•rubbing alcohol

•paper towels or anti-static cloths

•water

Always turn your computer off before you begin and unplug all the cords.

Step 1: Inside the case
Using a screwdriver, remove the side of the case that's opposite your motherboard. Touch as little as possible inside the computer, keeping fingers away from cards and cords.
Blow air around all of the components and along the bottom of the case, keeping the nozzle four inches away from the machine. Blow air into the power supply box and into the fan (from the back of the case). Lastly, blow air into the floppy disk and CD drives. Wipe the inside of the cover with a lightly moistened cloth before replacing it.
Millman recommends doing this every three months if your case sits on the floor, if you have pets that shed, or if you smoke. Otherwise, every six to eight months is fine.

Step 2: Outside the case
Run a cotton swab dipped in rubbing alcohol around all of the openings on the back of your case. Give them one swipe with the damp end of the swab and one swipe with the dry end. Do this as often as you clean the inside of your computer.

Step 3: Keyboard
Turn the keyboard upside down and gently shake it. Most of the crumbs and dust will fall out. Take a can of compressed air and blow into and around the keys. Next, take a cotton swab and dip it in rubbing alcohol. It should be damp, but not wet. Run the cotton swab around the outside of the keys. Rub the tops of the keys. If you have a laptop, follow the same procedure but take extra care with your machine. Do this monthly.

Spills — If you have kids, you're worried about spills. If it happens, disconnect the keyboard immediately and flip it over. Blot the top with a paper towel, blow compressed air between the keys and leave it to air dry overnight. For laptops, liquid can easily penetrate the hard drive so turn the computer over immediately and leave it in that position until it dries.

Step 4: Mouse
Rub the top and bottom of your mouse with a paper towel dipped in rubbing alcohol. Open the back and remove the ball. Wash the ball with water and let it air dry. To clean inside the mouse, dip a cotton swab in rubbing alcohol and rub all of the components. Scrape hard-to-remove grime with your fingernail. Finally, blow air into the opening. Replace the ball and the cover. Do this monthly.

Step 5: Monitor
Moisten a paper towel or a soft, lint-free cloth with water. (You can also buy monitor cleaning products at computer-supply stores.) Don't spray liquid directly onto the screen—spray the cloth instead. Wipe the screen gently to remove dust and fingerprints. Never touch the back of the monitor.
For laptop screens, Millman suggests buying a special cleaning solution available at computer stores. Do this weekly.

Finally, make sure that everything is dry before you plug your computer back in.

Internet Explorer 8: Features

See what we've done to make Internet Explorer 8 faster, easier, and safer than ever.

Accelerators:-
Accelerators let you map directions, translate words, email your friends, and more in just a few mouse clicks. Learn more

InPrivate Browsing :-
Browse the web without saving your history with Internet Explorer 8's InPrivate Browsing. Use an Internet firewall
Note: Windows Vista and Windows XP with SP2 has a firewall already built-in and turned on by default.

2. Visit Microsoft Update and turn on automatic updating.
Note: If you've installed the most recent version of Microsoft Office, Automatic Updates will also update your Office programs. If you have an earlier version of Office, use Office Update.

3. Subscribe to industry standard antivirus software, such as Windows Live OneCare and keep it current.

4. Never open an e-mail attachment from someone you don't know.

5. Avoid opening an e-mail attachment from someone you know, unless you know exactly what the attachment is. The sender may be unaware that it contains a virus.

What about spyware?
Although spyware programs are different from viruses, some can behave like viruses and pose similar and other risks. To help protect against spyware, use antispyware software such as Windows Defender. Windows Defender comes with Windows Vista. If you use Windows XP SP2, you can download Windows Defender for no charge.

Signs of viruses: Are you infected?

After you open and run an infected program or attachment on your computer, you might not realize that you've introduced a virus until you notice something isn't quite right.

Here are a few primary indicators that your computer might be infected:

• Your computer runs more slowly than normal

• Your computer stops responding or locks up often

• Your computer crashes and restarts every few minutes

• Your computer restarts on its own and then fails to run normally

• Applications on your computer don't work correctly

• Disks or disk drives are inaccessible

• You can't print correctly

• You see unusual error messages

• You see distorted menus and dialog boxes

These are common signs of infection—but they might also indicate hardware or software problems that have nothing to do with a virus. Unless you run the Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool and install industry-standard, up-to-date antivirus software on your computer, there is no way to be certain if your computer is infected with a virus or not. If you don't have current antivirus software installed or if you're interested in installing a different brand, you can try Windows Live OneCare free for 90 days or visit our Windnows Marketplace for software from other companies.

Tip: Beware of messages warning you that you sent e-mail that contained a virus. This can indicate that the virus has listed your e-mail address as the sender of tainted e-mail. This does not necessarily mean you have a virus. Some viruses have the ability to forge e-mail addresses.

Strong passwords: How to create and use them

Your passwords are the keys you use to access personal information that you've stored on your computer and in your online accounts.
If criminals or other malicious users steal this information, they can use your name to open new credit card accounts, apply for a mortgage, or pose as you in online transactions. In many cases you would not notice these attacks until it was too late.
Fortunately, it is not hard to create strong passwords and keep them well protected.

What makes a strong password:-
To an attacker, a strong password should appear to be a random string of characters. The following criteria can help your passwords do so:

Make it lengthy. Each character that you add to your password increases the protection that it provides many times over. Your passwords should be 8 or more characters in length; 14 characters or longer is ideal.
Many systems also support use of the space bar in passwords, so you can create a phrase made of many words (a "pass phrase"). A pass phrase is often easier to remember than a simple password, as well as longer and harder to guess.

Combine letters, numbers, and symbols. The greater variety of characters that you have in your password, the harder it is to guess. Other important specifics include:

• The fewer types of characters in your password, the longer it must be. A 15-character password composed only of random letters and numbers is about 33,000 times stronger than an 8-character password composed of characters from the entire keyboard. If you cannot create a password that contains symbols, you need to make it considerably longer to get the same degree of protection. An ideal password combines both length and different types of symbols.

• Use the entire keyboard, not just the most common characters. Symbols typed by holding down the "Shift" key and typing a number are very common in passwords. Your password will be much stronger if you choose from all the symbols on the keyboard, including punctuation marks not on the upper row of the keyboard, and any symbols unique to your language.

Use words and phrases that are easy for you to remember, but difficult for others to guess. The easiest way to remember your passwords and pass phrases is to write them down. Contrary to popular belief, there is nothing wrong with writing passwords down, but they need to be adequately protected in order to remain secure and effective.

In general, passwords written on a piece of paper are more difficult to compromise across the Internet than a password manager, Web site, or other software-based storage tool, such as password managers.

Create a strong, memorable password in 6 steps :-
Use these steps to develop a strong password:

1. Think of a sentence that you can remember. This will be the basis of your strong password or pass phrase. Use a memorable sentence, such as "My son Aiden is three years old."

2. Check if the computer or online system supports the pass phrase directly. If you can use a pass phrase (with spaces between characters) on your computer or online system, do so.

3. If the computer or online system does not support pass phrases, convert it to a password. Take the first letter of each word of the sentence that you've created to create a new, nonsensical word. Using the example above, you'd get: "msaityo".

4. Add complexity by mixing uppercase and lowercase letters and numbers. It is valuable to use some letter swapping or misspellings as well. For instance, in the pass phrase above, consider misspelling Aiden's name, or substituting the word "three" for the number 3. There are many possible substitutions, and the longer the sentence, the more complex your password can be. Your pass phrase might become "My SoN Ayd3N is 3 yeeRs old." If the computer or online system will not support a pass phrase, use the same technique on the shorter password. This might yield a password like "MsAy3yo".

5. Finally, substitute some special characters. You can use symbols that look like letters, combine words (remove spaces) and other ways to make the password more complex. Using these tricks, we create a pass phrase of "MySoN 8N i$ 3 yeeR$ old" or a password (using the first letter of each word) "M$8ni3y0".

6. Test your new password with Password Checker Password Checker is a non-recording feature on this Web site that helps determine your password's strength as you type.

Password strategies to avoid
Some common methods used to create passwords are easy to guess by criminals. To avoid weak, easy-to-guess passwords:

• Avoid sequences or repeated characters. "12345678," "222222," "abcdefg," or adjacent letters on your keyboard do not help make secure passwords.

• Avoid using only look-alike substitutions of numbers or symbols. Criminals and other malicious users who know enough to try and crack your password will not be fooled by common look-alike replacements, such as to replace an 'i' with a '1' or an 'a' with '@' as in "M1cr0$0ft" or "P@ssw0rd". But these substitutions can be effective when combined with other measures, such as length, misspellings, or variations in case, to improve the strength of your password.

• Avoid your login name. Any part of your name, birthday, social security number, or similar information for your loved ones constitutes a bad password choice. This is one of the first things criminals will try.

• Avoid dictionary words in any language. Criminals use sophisticated tools that can rapidly guess passwords that are based on words in multiple dictionaries, including words spelled backwards, common misspellings, and substitutions. This includes all sorts of profanity and any word you would not say in front of your children.

• Use more than one password everywhere. If any one of the computers or online systems using this password is compromised, all of your other information protected by that password should be considered compromised as well. It is critical to use different passwords for different systems.

• Avoid using online storage. If malicious users find these passwords stored online or on a networked computer, they have access to all your information.

The "blank password" option :-
A blank password (no password at all) on your account is more secure than a weak password such as "1234". Criminals can easily guess a simplistic password, but on computers using Windows XP, an account without a password cannot be accessed remotely by means such as a network or the Internet. (This option is not available for Microsoft Windows 2000, Windows Me, or earlier versions) You can choose to use a blank password on your computer account if these criteria are met:

• You only have one computer or you have several computers but you do not need to access information on one computer from another one

• The computer is physically secure (you trust everyone who has physical access to the computer)

The use of a blank password is not always a good idea. For example, a laptop computer that you take with you is probably not physically secure, so on those you should have a strong password.

How to access and change your passwords :-
Online accounts

Web sites have a variety of policies that govern how you can access your account and change your password. Look for a link (such as "my account") somewhere on the site's home page that goes to a special area of the site that allows password and account management.

Computer passwords

The Help files for your computer operating system will usually provide information about how to create, modify, and access password-protected user accounts, as well as how to require password protection upon startup of your computer. You can also try to find this information online at the software manufacturer's Web site. For example, if you use Microsoft Windows XP, online help can show you how to manage passwords, change passwords, and more.

Keep your passwords secret :-
Treat your passwords and pass phrases with as much care as the information that they protect.

• Don't reveal them to others. Keep your passwords hidden from friends or family members (especially children) who could pass them on to other less trustworthy individuals. Passwords that you need to share with others, such as the password to your online banking account that you might share with your spouse, are the only exceptions.

• Protect any recorded passwords. Be careful where you store the passwords that you record or write down. Do not leave these records of your passwords anywhere that you would not leave the information that they protect.

• Never provide your password over e-mail or based on an e-mail request. Any e-mail that requests your password or requests that you to go to a Web site to verify your password is almost certainly a fraud. This includes requests from a trusted company or individual. E-mail can be intercepted in transit, and e-mail that requests information might not be from the sender it claims. Internet "phishing" scams use fraudulent e-mail messages to entice you into revealing your user names and passwords, steal your identity, and more. Learn more about phishing scams and how to deal with online fraud.

• Change your passwords regularly. This can help keep criminals and other malicious users unaware. The strength of your password will help keep it good for a longer time. A password that is shorter than 8 characters should be considered only good for a week or so, while a password that is 14 characters or longer (and follows the other rules outlined above) can be good for several years.

• Do not type passwords on computers that you do not control. Computers such as those in Internet cafés, computer labs, shared systems, kiosk systems, conferences, and airport lounges should be considered unsafe for any personal use other than anonymous Internet browsing. Do not use these computers to check online e-mail, chat rooms, bank balances, business mail, or any other account that requires a user name and password. Criminals can purchase keystroke logging devices for very little money and they take only a few moments to install. These devices let malicious users harvest all the information typed on a computer from across the Internet—your passwords and pass phrases are worth as much as the information that they protect.

What to do if your password is stolen :-
Be sure to monitor all the information you protect with your passwords, such as your monthly financial statements, credit reports, online shopping accounts, and so on. Strong, memorable passwords can help protect you against fraud and identity theft, but there are no guarantees. No matter how strong your password is, if someone breaks into the system that stores it, they will have your password. If you notice any suspicious activity that could indicate that someone has accessed your information, notify authorities as quickly as you can. Get more information on what to do if you think your identity has been stolen or you've been similarly defrauded.

10 tips for social networking safety

Social networking Web sites like MySpace, Facebook, Twitter, and Windows Live Spaces are services people can use to connect with others to share information like photos, videos, and personal messages.
As the popularity of these social sites grows, so do the risks of using them. Hackers, spammers, virus writers, identity thieves, and other criminals follow the traffic.

Read these tips to help protect yourself when you use social networks.

1. Use caution when you click links that you receive in messages from your friends on your social Web site. Treat links in messages on these sites as you would links in e-mail messages. (For more information, see Approach links in e-mail with caution.)

2. Don't trust that a message is really from who it says it's from. Hackers can break into accounts and send messages that look like they're from your friends, but aren't. If you suspect that a message is fraudulent, use an alternate method to contact your friend to find out. This includes invitations to join new social networks.
3. To avoid giving away e-mail addresses of your friends, do not allow social networking services to scan your e-mail address book. When you join a new social network, you might receive an offer to enter your e-mail address and password to find out who else is on the network. The site might use this information to send e-mail messages to everyone in your contact list or even everyone you've ever sent an e-mail message to with that e-mail address. Social networking sites should explain that they're going to do this, but some do not.

4. Type the address of your social networking site directly into your browser or use your personal bookmarks. If you click a link to your site through e-mail or another Web site, you might be entering your account name and password into a fake site where your personal information could be stolen.

5. Be selective about who you accept as a friend on a social network. Identity thieves might create fake profiles in order to get information from you. This is known as social engineering.

6. Choose your social network carefully. Evaluate the site that you plan to use and make sure you understand the privacy policy. Find out if the site monitors content that people post. You will be providing personal information to this Web site, so use the same criteria that you would to select a site where you enter your credit card.

7. Assume what you write on a social networking site is permanent. Even if you can delete your account, anyone on the Internet can easily print the information or save it to a computer.

8. Be careful about installing extras on your site. Many social networking sites allow you to download third-party applications that let you do more with your personal page. Criminals sometimes use these applications in order to steal your personal information. To download and use third-party applications safely, take the same safety precautions that you take with any other program or file you download from the Web. For more information, see Before you download files, help protect your computer.

9. Think twice before you use social networking sites at work. For more information, see Be careful with social networking sites, especially at work.

10. Talk to your kids about social networking. If you're a parent of children who use social networking sites, see How to help your kids use social Web sites more safely.

Microsoft Office Live Workspace Beta

Get to your documents from anywhere - and it’s free!

Access files from anywhere
. Access documents from almost any computer with a Web browser
. This week's columnist offers new and interesting ways of using Excel. J.P. loves Excel like no one we know, so sit up straight and pay attention to what Jean Philippe Bagel has to say. Then watch your efficiency speed up (while having some fun too).

Over the years of working for Microsoft, I've gotten to see incredible use of our products and be the de facto technical support contact for family and friends. This column provides me with an opportunity to share broadly some of the solutions I've given, as well as exposing some of the features others have taught me, and which I think are truly hidden gems in various applications of the Microsoft Office System.

I started at Microsoft as a localizer (translator) in Excel, and in my current job I spend a lot of my time in this application, so it's only fitting I share Excel tips in this column. Today, let's review how to quickly navigate in an Excel workbook, display an icon set for a True or False condition, and group dates in a PivotTable report.

So many worksheets, so little space :-
Have you ever had an Excel workbook with multiple sheets, those sheets having names other than the proverbial Sheet1, Sheet2, and Sheet3? My wife's business has many great examples of this, where business data is being kept in various workbooks, where tabs are corresponding to months, from January to December:

Rather quickly, you get to the point where you no longer can see all the tabs in one view. Of course, you can use the built-in tabs navigation buttons, and go the next, previous, first, or last sheet, but wouldn't it be great if there was a way to see all the sheets and be able to click on the one you want to work on? Well, there is one, and it has been there since Excel 4 (I think). Simply right-click the tabs navigation buttons and a floating list of all the worksheets in the workbook will appear, as pictured below. It is especially useful when sheet names are long. I use this time and time again, and find it the best way to navigate complex spreadsheets. Now seems just the perfect time to also remind you of two great keyboard shortcuts: CTRL+PageUp activates the previous sheet in your workbook, while CTRL+PageDown activates the next one.

Condition your list — gently and automatically :-
For this next gem, I want to thank Mike, a colleague which ran into this a few days ago, which reminded me to include it in this column. How many of you use spreadsheets to keep track of … “things”, for lack of a better word. To use a very simple scenario, let's pretend we collect attendance to an event, and that you simply enter an "X” next to the name of the person you know will attend the event, as pictured below on the left. Excel 2007 provides great new conditional formatting rules, which will allow automatic display of nicely formatted icon sets. Would our previous list not look better, as pictured below, on the right?

Let's see how we get there. First you'll need to remember that Excel is a spreadsheet, and that it thrives on dealing and understanding numbers. We should therefore think about representing attendances using values as opposed to text. It's not that complicated … Let's just say that someone attending the event will now be represented by a 1 (as opposed to an "X") in the Will Attend column. Someone not coming will be represented with a zero. Still with me?

Now for the real magic, let's follow those 5 easy steps:

Select the range of values we want to represent (from B2 to B8 here).
Click Conditional Formatting on the Home tab, then choose Icon Sets, then pick 3 Symbols (Uncircled) in the gallery of options. They're represented by a green check box, a yellow exclamation point and a red "X". At this point, you have both the values (0 or 1) and the icon represented on the sheet.
Click Conditional Formatting again, and then choose the Manage Rules command.
Click the Edit Rule button.
Check the Show Icon Only check box, click Apply, then click OK. Voilà!

Where Excel 2007 shines even more is that you can now filter this list by color. With the active selection being anywhere in the list, click the Data tab, then the Filter button. As you can see each column header now includes a drop-down arrow indicating it is filtered. Click the filter on the Will attend column, and then choose the Filter by Color command. See how you can now filter by green check boxes, showing only the people who will attend the event.

Date grouping in PivotTable reports
For the final gem in this column, we are going to explore PivotTable reports, and particularly grouping by dates. A few weeks ago, I was sifting through some Office Online metrics data for the Developer Help topics. Nine months after launch, the data is starting to be really interesting. Every day, our system captures the following data: the help topic, the number of page views, and the date, as shown in the excerpt below. Of course the complete sheet is tens of thousands of rows, listing every day since November 2006.

My goal was to represent this data, sorted by month and help topic, where Excel aggregated hits. I succeeded, by at first reinventing the wheel, breaking down the information from the Date field into a Year column, then a Month one. My colleague Dearbhla in Ireland confirmed my hunch that Excel could handle this in a much easier way! And this is not new to Excel 2007, either!

First I created a simple PivotTable, clicking PivotTable, from the Tables chunk on the Insert tab. This will display an empty PivotTable, with the PivotTable Field List pane open. From there:

I dragged and dropped Title in the Row Labels area.
I dragged and dropped Hits in the Values area (where Excel automatically chose to perform a sum).
I dragged and dropped Date in the Column Labels area.
As this stage, the PivotTable sorted the data by topic, and by day, as exposed below. This was a step in the right direction, but hardly exposing actionable data. As you can see, some days some help topics never get read, and with every day represented, there is data exposed all the way to the JY column. This is where grouping by month becomes extraordinarily handy and easy.

All that is needed to obtain a logical grouping by month is to place the cursor on one of the days, then choose the Options tab in the PivotTable Tools group, then choose Group Selection, which brings up the Grouping dialog. In the By list, select Months and Years, then OK. The PivotTable is now ideally aggregated, as pictured below:

The subject of PivotTables would warrant many more columns, and this is true as well for many other Excel features we could expose. I remember vividly how I got started in Excel with version 2.1c, writing XLM macros. To this day, Excel remains my favorite application, and when there's too much data to analyze, there's always Access to help out!

How to remove a computer virus ???

Even for an expert, removing a virus from a computer can be a daunting task without the help of tools designed for the job.
Some viruses and other unwanted software (including spyware) are even designed to reinstall themselves after they have been detected and removed.
Fortunately, by updating your computer and using free, trial-period, or low-cost antivirus tools, you can help permanently remove (and prevent) unwanted software.

Steps to help remove a virus:
1. Visit Microsoft Update and install the latest updates.
2. If you currently use antivirus software, visit the manufacturer's Web site, update your software, and then perform a thorough scan of your computer. If you don't use antivirus software, subscribe to a service and scan your computer immediately.
3. Download, install, and run the Malicious Software Removal Tool. Note that this tool does not prevent viruses from infecting your system; it helps to remove existing viruses.

Why didn't my antivirus software work?
It's crucial to keep your antivirus software current with the latest updates (usually called definition files) that help the tool identify and remove the latest threats.
In addition, not all antivirus tools are the same; if you find that the one you use isn't working to your satisfaction, you should do some research and try an alternative.

Note: What you might think is a virus could actually be spyware. Download and install Windows Defender or other antispyware software to see if that fixes the problem. Windows Defender comes with Windows Vista. If you use Windows XP SP2, you can download Windows Defender for no charge.

How do I install updates and antivirus software if I can't use my computer?
It might be difficult to download tools or update your computer if your computer has a virus. In this case, use a friend's or other computer to download the tools to a disk, or get support from Microsoft.

What is a computer virus?

Computer viruses are small software programs that are designed to spread from one computer to another and to interfere with computer operation.
A virus might corrupt or delete data on your computer, use your e-mail program to spread itself to other computers, or even erase everything on your hard disk.
Viruses are most easily spread by attachments in e-mail messages or instant messaging messages. That is why it is essential that you never open e-mail attachments unless you know who it's from and you are expecting it.
Viruses can be disguised as attachments of funny images, greeting cards, or audio and video files.
Viruses also spread through downloads on the Internet. They can be hidden in illicit software or other files or programs you might download.
To help avoid viruses, it's essential that you keep your computer current with the latest updates and antivirus tools, stay informed about recent threats, and that you follow a few basic rules when you surf the Internet, download files, and open attachments.
Once a virus is on your computer, its type or the method it used to get there is not as important as removing it and preventing further infection.

Rev it up: Rediscover your PC’s youth

I can remember when I first stopped using a 56K modem and switched to broadband Internet access. Everything felt so fast.I ,a poor man, was stuck with dial-up for a while longer until I was able to purchase the necessary hardware and set up a home network so there was ample opportunity to remind myself how fast broadband is. Swapping to his dial-up account when broadband was down (which happened far too often in the early days) was downright painful.
For a while I assumed that I was simply used to broadband and my new computer’s speed — I told myself I was spoiled. As the situation worsened it became obvious that it was more than my imagination. My ISP ran the appropriate tests and denied responsibility. It was time to look further afield for a cause and a solution.

Tip: Broadbandreports.com hosts various testing utilities that will check for ISP related problems such as packet loss, bad routers, and upload and download speeds.

Some of the fixes you will see below are not specific to Internet Explorer. Experience has taught me that it is always a good idea to take a holistic approach when working on browser slow downs.

Delete cached Internet Explorer data:-
Internet Explorer is an excellent record-keeper, automatically hoarding lots of information while we are surfing the net. Over time this information can become unwieldy, and fragmented. Deleting this data can lead to an obvious improvement in Internet Explorer’s performance, especially on older machines.

To delete Internet Explorer’s cache:

1.From the Start menu, click Control Panel.
2.In Category View, click Network and Internet Connections, and then click Internet Options.
3.On the General tab, click Delete Files in the Temporary Internet files section, select the Delete all offline content check box, and then click OK.

Consider using the Delete Cookies button as well, but bear in mind that you may lose information that is sometimes recorded using cookies, such as Web forum identities, Web site preferences, and sometimes passwords.

Delete temporary files system wide:-
Temporary files can be found in various directories. For the purposes of this column, the directories to focus on are:
C:\WINDOWS\TempandC:\Documents and Settings\{Identity}\Local Settings\Temp

Shut down all running programs before attempting to delete the contents of the above folders. If a file is necessary to a program or background process still running on your system an error message stating that the file is in use will appear. If you are unable to delete a particular file despite shutting down all running programs, write down the name of the file causing the error. Delete everything above, and then everything below, the problem file and concern yourself no further. Our aim is to get rid of as much detritus as possible, but it does not matter if some bits and pieces are left behind.

Tip: The Disk Cleanup utility is an easy way to delete cached and temporary files. It can be accessed by navigating to Accessories from All Programs on the Start menu, then opening the System Tools folder.

Adjust Internet Explorer’s cache size:-
One of the side effects of today’s mega-large hard drives is that Internet Explorer may automatically set its cache limit to a ridiculously large size, or the computer’s user will choose an extremely large cache size because they have the room.
I have seen computers with a gigabyte (GB) or more of space dedicated to cached Web pages. This is far too much. Any time saved by caching so many pages is wiped out by the time it takes Internet Explorer to index and then later find and load those pages. Also, the risk of cache corruption increases exponentially as the size of the cache increases.
I generally recommend a cache size of 50 to 100 megabytes (MB) for the average user, with 100 MB being for those with broadband and a newer (faster) PC. If you are in the habit of downloading very large files then you should consider increasing the size of your cache so that it will comfortably fit the size of your largest download plus about 50 MB.

Tip: If you regularly download files that are hundreds of megabytes in size, you should consider using a reputable download manager. You will find several listed on Windows Marketplace.

Clear History:-
Internet Explorer’s History feature is sometimes misused, with some people maintaining a browsing history of 30, 40, 50 or even the maximum of 99 days. Large history folders can slow inline automatic completion of Web addresses, and the Address bar’s drop-down list of prior addresses will take longer and longer to appear.
Instead of depending on the History pane to find preferred Web sites, consider adding such pages to your Favorites folder. Detailed information about the differences between History and Favorites, and features unique to both, can be found in my earlier article, Data in Depth: Get more from Internet Explorer Favorites and History.

Clear AutoComplete data:-
Internet Explorer can store form data and passwords. This is very convenient, but too much cached information will slow down Internet Explorer or, in extreme cases, freeze it completely. To avoid this problem, clear your Forms and Password cache regularly, after ensuring that your important information has been recorded elsewhere.

To clear Forms and Password cache in Internet Explorer:
1.On the Tools menu, click Internet Options, then click the Content tab.
2.Click on the AutoComplete button, and then click on the Clear Forms and/or Clear Passwords buttons

Hard drive maintenance:-
Now that you have deleted cached data and temporary files, deleted your history and adjusted the maximum size of Internet Explorer’s Temporary Internet files folder it is time to turn our attention to the hard drive.
Over time the data on our hard drive becomes fragmented because Windows does not always save files in single chunks. It will try to save a file into the first chunk of free space it finds on a hard drive that is big enough for a file, but if it can’t find a suitable spot it will split the file into pieces before saving the fragments in different spots. As a hard drive fills up, and files are deleted and written, these empty spaces become more and more scattered, and files more and more fragmented.
The inside of a hard disk looks a lot like an old fashioned record player. There is a highly polished platter on which all data is stored, and a reading arm that swings back and forth to retrieve the data on the hard drive (a lot like an old fashioned record player’s stylus moves across the surface of a vinyl album while it is being played). The more fragmented a hard disk becomes, the more the arm has to swing back and forth to access the various bits of a file, slowing things down. The Windows Disk Defragmenter can improve your system’s performance by optimizing your disk usage and keeping files less fragmented.

To Defragment your hard drive:
1.Click the Start button, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click Disk Defragmenter.
Make sure that your screen saver and any running programs are turned off. Then simply select the hard drive that you wish to defragment and start the process running.
Defragmenting can take quite a long time depending on the size of your hard drive and even newer machines can benefit from this process. For example, my main workhorse PC running a 2.6 Celeron and with a GB of RAM installed reported over 40% fragmentation despite being only a few months old. The improvement in performance after running Windows Desk Defragmenter was quite remarkable.

Still having problems?
A common cause of Internet Explorer, and even system wide, slow downs is malware and viruses. If you see new toolbars in Internet Explorer, if you see pop-up advertisements, if new shortcuts have appeared on your desktop, if your home page and search engine settings have changed, if your computer tried to connect to the Internet unexpectedly, if your bandwidth usage has suddenly increased or if your system suddenly becomes sluggish or unstable, then we must seriously consider this possibility.
Run a full system scan using your current antivirus program, making sure that you first download and install the latest virus definitions. Once you have ensured that no viruses or Trojans have infected your system, complete a comprehensive malware check. For advice on how to do this, have a look at my previous article, Bug busting: Getting rid of spyware.

Tip: The Web page http://aumha.org/a/noads.htm can quickly scan your PC for the most common hijackers, and has links to advice about how to remove any malware that is detected.
Once you have completed all the maintenance and diagnostic steps listed above, Internet Explorer should be back to its old self. If you are still experiencing slow downs, I recommend that you refer to the Internet Explorer newsgroups for further, in-depth, diagnosis.

10 tips for finding information on the Internet

Sometimes looking for quick information on the Web can be like searching for a needle in a haystack. With so many billions of Web pages in cyberspace, finding specific information can be a daunting task.

"Often when I use search engines I get so many irrelevant results that I just give up," admits a frustrated Lorraine Adams, mother of two and a disability consultant.

Perhaps Adams isn't aware that there are ways to get more out of your favorite search engine, whether that's Live Search, Google, or Yahoo!. A few searching tips, tricks, tweaks, and techniques can help you find what you are looking for in cyberspace quickly and easily.
Follow these 10 suggestions with your favorite search engine.

1. Use the advanced search field:-
Almost all search engines have an "advanced search" area that provides Web surfers with more specific options. Here, you can search by an update date, look for Web sites with a specific domain like ".net," or find Web sites in a preferred language.

2. Search with a phrase:-
To better help the search engine find what you're looking for, offer a sequence of words in a specific order, using quotation marks around the phrase.
For instance, if you're looking for information on the TV show Saturday Night Live, type "Saturday Night Live" into the search window. Without quotations on each end, a search engine will likely look for Web sites containing any of the words separately: Saturday, night, and live.

3. Be specific:-
If broad search words like car classifieds yield too many results, try more specific words such as used car classifieds, Mercedes classifieds, or London car classifieds.

4. Use alternative search words:-
If your keywords do not produce the results you want, try synonyms. Use a thesaurus like Roget's Interactive Thesaurus or Merriam-Webster OnLine to find alternative search words. After all, a dog is also a canine, a pooch, a mutt, a hound, a pet, and man's best friend!

5. Insert a plus or minus sign:-
This trick usually works in most search engines. Put a plus sign (+) in front of a word that must be found in the search window. For example, city guides + New York will help you narrow the search for city guides for New York only.
Similarly, place a minus sign (-) in front of a word that you do not want to appear in the search results. Typing in python -Monty will allow you to come up with results for snakes and not the British comedy troupe.

6. Just search the domain name:-
If you know the Web site that you want to search, but aren't sure where the information is located within that site, you can tell your search engine to only search that domain. Enter what you're looking for in the search field, followed by the word "site" and a colon, and then by the domain name.
For example, to find admission information for the University of Toronto, enter this: admission site: www.utoronto.ca.

7. Explore "best of" sites:-
If you're after quality and not quantity, a few search engines provide access to hand-picked "Best of the Web" sites. One example is About.com.

8. Eliminate inappropriate content:-
If you prefer not to have adult sites included in your search results, activate SafeSearch on the Live Search settings page or on Google's advanced search page. While not 100 percent accurate, this function will eliminate sites that contain explicit sexual content from the search results.

9. Save time with a search toolbar:-
If you do a lot of searching on the Web, consider downloading the free Windows Live Toolbar or Google Toolbar, which always sit near the top of your Internet Explorer browser window. This way, you do not need to leave the Web site you're on to type in a new query.

10. Specialize your search engine:-
Lastly, keep in mind that there are many specialized search engines. Live Search, for example, has Live Search Images to search for pictures, MSN Shopping for shopping-related Web sites, and MSN News for published news articles from around the world. Many more specialty search engines can be found at Search Engine Watch.

Tips and hints to help you become a successful magician:

I have some tips & hints about magic. I think it will help you to improve your magician ability..

1. Practice in front of a mirror so you can see the trick as your audience will. Practice lots!
2. Practice the "patter" as well as the trick. Figure out before hand what you want to say during the show. Good patter will help distract the audience just enough to keep them from guessing how you've pulled off your magical feats! Here's a start for you:
I have a magic trick for you.It should be lots of fun.Pay very close attention,And guess how it is done!
3. Resist the temptation to tell how the trick worked... keep them guessing and they'll be even more impressed with your show.
4. Never do the same trick more than once for the same audience. It makes it too easy for the audience to guess how it was done.
5. Control the seating arrangements... some of the tricks require that the people be looking straight at you. Have the audience remain seated throughout the show.
6.Wherever you can, borrow the objects from the audience... coins, pencils, napkins, etc. Borrowing from the audience makes it seem like the magician hasn't had time to do anything sneaky to the item. This makes everything seem more magical!
7.Lovely Assistant: a lot of the card tricks (or any other mind reading type tricks) work well using a magical puppet or stuffed animal as your assistant. Try putting on an entire show where you aren't a magician at all... instead claim that you bought a puppet from an old gypsy woman and it turned out to be magic (you can make up a cool story to use as your patter). Have the puppet or stuffed animal "whisper" the answers into your ear. Having a puppet do all the work, may keep you from getting stage fright! I've included the puppet image on all the tricks that will work well this way.
Now... on with the show!

5 power tools for students

Your kids can do a great job with even the toughest school projects with just a computer running Windows Vista and the right information resources. For better or for worse, the Internet often becomes an alternative to a library's card catalogs. But how can you trust what you read on the Web?
"Frankly, this is my main concern, along with stumbling onto inappropriate material," admits Bonnie Marks, a mother of two. "Just because someone publishes something on their home page, it doesn't make it gospel—many kids don't know this."

Learning where to go and how to appropriately use information that is on the Internet can be challenging to both parents and students. The following is a look at some of the most comprehensive—and reliable—educational Web sites a student can bookmark and use to research school projects and homework assignments.

1>MSN Encarta:- The free MSN Encarta site features more than 4,500 articles pooled from Microsoft Encarta, the award-winning electronic reference library, and comes with dictionaries, maps, fast facts, interactive quizzes, handy homework tools, and more.

2>Refdesk:- Since 1995, Refdesk.com, which stands for "reference desk," has served as a one-click springboard to many of the Web's top dictionaries, encyclopedias, calculators, atlases, news headlines, and search engines. The site also includes a handy "homework helper" section that provides help in all subjects to students in every grade.

3>HowStuffWorks:- Ever wanted to know why earthquakes happen? How CD burners work? What the sun is made of?
