in simi valley in april 1992, 3 LA cops were found not guilty and the jury failed to reach a verdict for the fourth. the riots that followed caused 53 deaths and 2000 injuries and destroyed 600 buildings.

regarding the march 1991 incident, wikipedia says:

King was taken to Pacifica Hospital immediately after his arrest. He suffered a fractured facial bone, a broken right ankle, and numerous bruises and lacerations. In a negligence claim filed with the city, King alleged he had suffered "11 skull fractures, permanent brain damage, broken [bones and teeth], kidney damage [and] emotional and physical trauma." Blood and urine samples taken from King five hours after his arrest showed that he could be presumed intoxicated under California law. The tests also showed traces of marijuana (26 ng/ml), but no indication of PCP or any other illegal drug. At Pacifica Hospital, where King was taken for initial treatment, nurses reported that the officers who accompanied King (including Wind) openly joked and bragged about the number of times King had been hit. King sued the city over the beating, settling for $3.8 million.

his book, just published in april to coincide with the 20th anniversary of the trial, will undoubtedly and ironically be a bestseller.

fukushima not natural disaster?

this is fascinating. a nuclear engineer has completed an analysis and concluded that the fukushima meltdown and explosion could have been avoided if sufficient emergency backup electric power had been available for the cooling systems of all six reactors. the strength of the quake and the height of the tsunami would not have mattered if all possible precautions had been taken, as shown by the fact that a diesel engine on a nearby hilltop was used to generate enough electricity to save two reactors.

there seems to be a fair amount of concern that the new jobs figure for march means the economy has slowed down. 120k is low, the lowest number since last august's 52k. the latest survey result is an outlier, to say the least.

nobody knows for sure what caused it. too many variables are present, giving economists numerous opportunities to hypothesize.

possible causal factors range from oil prices to climate change to random fluctuation, among others. some employers continue to report uncertainty as a reason to postpone hiring. others say sales have risen enough to make them invest in more equipment, but not enough to allow them to hire workers to use the new equipment.

the warm winter has been indicted by several analysts who think workers got hired in december, january, and february who would have been hired later if conditions had been normal, so as time went on hiring fell to compensate. that explanation is consistent with the large number of total new jobs for the period. moving averages support it. the 3-month average is now 210k new jobs per month, the 4-month average is 216k/mo, and the 7-month average, september thru march, is 200k/mo. all those figures are quite respectable, so if the weather is indeed the main cause of the anomaly, prospects are good for a continuing recovery.

on the other hand, if the price of oil and gasoline is the culprit, and if they keep rising, new jobs may keep falling.

GOP pols and pundits are gleefully rubbing their hands together at the possibility.

So when we hear the president of the Republic saying his strategy is working, we think he's either in an ivory tower and has no idea what's actually going on, or basically he's a liar. But his anger is not just reserved for the state. He is equally critical of some of his colleagues in the Catholic Church.

One of the most serious charges against the Church is that there are some parishes that have actually profited from the drug violence in the form of donations from drug barons or cartels.

"We have to be very careful about who we accept donations from, particularly to fund structures of the Church. Very careful indeed," says Bishop Vera.

It is alleged that drug money has swelled the coffers in parishes where the drug lords exert control.

"There was once a rather embarrassing bishop who said something absurd," remembers Bishop Vera. "He said that money from drug trafficking was purified when it entered the Church. Of course it's not! The money from drugs is intrinsically stained with blood and we can't use it. We mustn't." [more]

pennsylvania is now the 32nd state to pass a voter ID law. it amounts to a de facto poll tax, since eligible voters with no acceptable proof of identity or residence must spend money to obtain such proof. a study at NYU law school indicated that "11% of voting-age American citizens—and an even greater percentage of African American, low-income, and older citizens—do not have current and valid government-issued photo IDs." poll taxes were made unconstitutional in 1964.

the state has had two jim crow laws before. the first, passed in 1869, prohibited black children from attending school in pittsburgh. the 2nd, in 1956, required adoption applicants to state their race.
