Utah State University Chemistry and Biochemistry Website Re-design project

Check it out here here are some of the banner layouts and a couple of the final pages of the new Chemistry and Biochemistry department website. This project was a joint effort with myself, and Erik Packard. The client was less than thrilled with their web presence, and asked us to come up with some ways to make their website more interesting, I think we succeeded. in the end we turned over the coding for the website to the IT department for some changes to the pre-existing web template. I think the design is now sleek, cohesive and really represents the the chemistry department. As soon as the final site gets published Ill add the link so you can see it in real time. let me know what you think.

Femina Chocolate

The Problem

In Switzerland for my recent study abroad combining business and graphic design, called Design Thinking for Innovation, we got the Opportunity to do a rebranding project for a company owned by Nestle called Caillei. In 2006 the Company did a major re-design for all varieties of their swiss chocolate, the new packaging though innovative, different and exiting, was far removed from the traditional packaging for their Swiss Chocolate. As a result they lost the good majority of their faithful customer base overnight, and nearly went out of business. When the problem was discovered the company immediately took steps to try and remedy the problem, but are still struggling to this day in recapturing their previous Audience. they have since regained a sizable portion of their previous customer base, and are looking to re brand their chocolates keeping in mind they need to do something that is not as drastic this time so as not to loose their customer base again.

This is where we came in, we were challenged to redesign the box for Caillei specifically for the brand of chocolate called Femina, a traditional praline Chocolate intended to convey tender affinity and sharing with women, this approach has worked for them in the past, but Caillie is now seeing a shrinking demographic, so as part of the re-design, we were charged to target a younger audience and re-make Femina into a successful product again.

The Solution

we were broken into 8 groups to brainstorm and come up with solution to the Femina problem, our solutions are as follows;

1. Box insert redesign so that the customer can see what kind of chocolates they are eating, without tipping the box over and dumping out the chocolate

2. Redesign the chocolate tray, changing the color to a blue, (as is the tray and wrapped chocolates are both silver), it is not exiting and it is hard to see what you bought. we believe that making the tray blue will draw attention to the carefully wrapped chocolates. We also designed more slots in the tray so that we could include more of the delicious chocolate we are trying to sell, giving the customer more value for their money.

3. Redesign of a classic insert that is a foil lace to highlight the chocolate and make the customer feel like they are getting a quality product, also lace has been a major associative component for Femina in the past, this insert/exterior wrap will help customers relate to the quality of the previous product.

4. The box re-design is similar to the original box we got rid of the lace on the cover, it looked tacky before and the pictures of the product were hard to see, and did not do anything for the product, we took better pictures and arranged them in a pleasing manner.

5. we came up with a new advertising campaign that helped target a younger demographic, and re-enforced the feeling of tender affinity that Caillei wants its customers to think of when they buy Femina for the special women of our lives.

THE FINAL PRODUCT

Caillei was very pleased with our presentation, and commented several times on our goups design and ideas, I believe we addressed the problem with reasonable solutions that are cost effective, for the company, and will give the customer a good sense of value for their money and something they can share with the special women of their lives.

Getting Inside my own head

I want to be known for my dependability, my honor, charity, and love, my knowledge, I hope to pass to others. I hope that others may learn from my faults and take from me the best that I have to offer, that any could be edified by my humble example would be my greatest honor and pleasure

If you take anything of this, take time to set some goals for your life. I currently have 60 + items on my bucket list I hope to accomplish, how many do you have?

Mission Statement for Jeff Olson

I exist to address bad design. I love bad design, it is an opportunity for me to help someone create something better. I seek to help people understand the concepts of excellent design so they can properly represent themselves to the world.

to address these needs I am sharpening my own skills, I am creating networks, and meeting with individuals who at present are not happy with their current brand, logo, business card, banner or sticker and who are seeking something better. I intend to provide these services. Through research and innovation I can provide a valuable asset to anyone through the branding process.

I believe in being honest, I believe in looking at something for what it is. I believe that sophistication lies in simplicity, and I love working together with people to produce something everyone can be proud of.

hey this is the website I have been working on for so long

there are still a few small glitches with the sound and the game button but hopefully I will be able to fix those shortly

the page is about Robby the robot

The site is designed to be a fun place for kids to hang out at.

To get to the game page, click twice on the home button, and you will be able to find the peices of robby and help put him back together again.

When you are done you can even watch him dance and check out the animation on the factory page, anyway have fun explore and let me know if you like it, or if you have suggestions for me.

Hey after lots of frustration I have FINALLY got my website assignment done, it really was not that bad but as I am new to creating websites it took me along time to figure it out. The sites I viewed were wikipedia.com (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page)and nasa.gov (http://www.nasa.gov/news/index.html)

The site I chose for my critique is http://www.nasa.gov/news/index.html because it is so cool! the sight is successful in my mind because of its imagery, the layout makes it easy to get where you want to go, I love space and the images from the shuttle, the space station and satellite are just breathtaking. the order of the site shows its professionalism and makes it so you can browse with ease and read or look at what interests you.

The site is mostly rectangle windows of complimenting colors they show brilliant images, which ate the focus of the sight clicking on them will show you more about them or the corresponding story they have a header with there different pages a main media window and a twitter update section. they have smaller windows with options that appeal to everybody and display information in an orderly way and have corresponding pictures.

you can navigate the site by clicking on a story, a picture, a drop down menu, (from the pages bar at the top) or click on an Icon and find the story, video, or information you are looking for. The navigation dose change from page to page when you click on an Item of interest it becomes the focus of the page other relating, relevant information or, information that nasa thinks you will be interested in, become smaller but still maintain a presence within the viewing screen. Dominant and standard for all pages are the pages bar, and design remains consistent and constant throughout the majority of the site. It is easy to see from the page headings where you are and how to get back to interests on other pages.

The use of color in this sight is meant to give you the feeling of being in space it as a backdrop is dark , but not hard to read information as it is highlighted in a lighter grey color and easy to interpret. I think the use of smaller windows here instead of one big window lets the viewer believe that nasa is using all of its available space, which is not true, If there where more pertinent stories ideas, and information, (which there probably is) they could show more links by having a standard white background, but it would not be as aesthetically pleasing and its color makes it unique and makes the site more interesting.

motion and texture are seen easily, not through the sight (except for drop down menus, and side pop out menus) but through the movie clips, it definitely makes space look more interesting and appealing.there is not much sound except on some of the news movie clips, but the absence of sound, sort of fits with the space theme they have going, though I must admit it would appeal more to me if when you clicked on a link it would make machine noises or beeps consistent with space or technology noises.

there is a distinct visual hierarchy with relevant and most important information appearing at the top of the site and appearing larger when more important or on display information is available, similar thoughts could be said about the informational Hierarchy also there is a lot of repetition but that is good and helps the site be more cohesive it makes sense when you look at it as a whole and in its applicable parts.

I believe the sites main purpose is for people ( the Public) to get a feel for what nasa is doing how they are spending taxpayer money, and that space is something interesting that anyone can get exited about and want to learn more. they provide provocative information about space that makes you want to be an astronaut, and explore new worlds and the great limitlessness of space. I think they achieved their goals when creating this site. they communicate well through media and through their professional looking site.

possible project ideas

I need a new website for my business, I have a blog but it is not great, we need a website for the graphic art and design website, I would like to create a forum where artists can share there art locally ( students of USU) and residents of cache valley, I would also like to have some interesting pop out/down menus that are unique and really catch peoples attention I was thinking gears or something that spins, in the middle of the site when you scroll over it, just some Ideas.
