Android Form Validation

This example show how to prevent null and blank field. Here username field check whether the submitted value is null or some blank space. If the submitted value is null or blank it displays a error message. Another amount field prevent user from entering negative value in the field, it simply uses android:inputType="numberDecimal" to prevent user to enter negative value. Likewise you can limit input size with android:maxLength="20", this limits text size to 20 characters.

Android ListView onItemClick Event

Here are the output screen of the application where users are able to insert their data through a textbox by clicking ok button as shown in image below. After adding the items users are able to select the items via clicking on it and the selected item is displayed via a toast.

A Print Spooler. In multitasking operating systems, a number of tasks make requests to print files. Often, there are not enough printing devices to satisfy all current print requests simultaneously. Any print request that cannot be immediately satisfied is placed in a queue awaiting printing. The part of an operating system that deals with the administration of such queues is known as a print spooler.

In this example we assume that the operating system can employ no more than MaxDevs output devices and that each device has a queue associated with it. We will also assume that each device is associated with a limit of lines in a file which it will print. For example, an output device that has a limit of 1000 lines of printing will be associated with a queue that contains only files having no more than 1000 lines of text. Print spoolers sometimes impose this constraint in order to forbid large print jobs that may occupy slow printing devices for exceptionally long periods. A schematic representation of a print spooler is shown in figure.

Referring to the figure, spooler state consists of four components: the queues of files waiting to be printed, each queue being associated with a particular output device; the collection of output devices controlled by the spooler; the relationship between the output devices and the maximum file size that each can print; and the relationship between the files awaiting printing and their size in lines. For example, figure shows that the output device LP1 which has a print limit of 750 lines has two files ftax and persons awaiting printing, and that the size of the files are 650 lines and 700 lines, respectively.

The state of the spooler is represented by the four components: queues, output
devices, limits, and sizes. The data invariant has five components:
• Each output device is associated with an upper limit on print lines.
• Each output device is associated with a possibly nonempty queue of files awaiting printing.
• Each file is associated with a size.
• Each queue associated with an output device contains files that have a size less than the upper limit of the output device.
• There will be no more than MaxDevs output devices administered by the spooler.

A number of operations can be associated with the spooler. For example,
• An operation that adds a new output device to the spooler together with its associated print limit.
• An operation that removes a file from the queue associated with a particular output device.
• An operation that adds a file to the queue associated with a particular output device.
• An operation that alters the upper limit of print lines for a particular output device.
• An operation that moves a file from a queue associated with an output device to another queue associated with a second output device.

Each of these operations corresponds to a function of the spooler. For example, the first operation would correspond to the spooler being notified of a new device being attached to the computer containing the operating system that administers the spooler.

As before, each operation is associated with a precondition and a postcondition. For example, the precondition for the first operation is that the output device name does not already exist and that there are currently less than MaxDevs output devices known to the spooler. The postcondition is that the name of the new device is added to the collection of existing device names, a new entry is formed for the device with no files being associated with its queue, and the device is associated with its print limit.

The precondition for the second operation (removing a file from a queue associated with a particular output device) is that the device is known to the spooler and that at least one entry in the queue is associated with the device. The postcondition is that the head of the queue associated with the output device is removed and its entry in the part of the spooler that keeps tracks of file sizes is deleted.

The precondition for the fifth operation described (moving a file from a queue associated with an output device to another queue associated with a second output device) is
• The first output device is known to the spooler.
• The second output device is known to the spooler.
• The queue associated with the first device contains the file to be moved.
• The size of the file is less than or equal to the print limit associated with the second output device.

The postcondition is that the file is removed from one queue and added to another queue.

In each of the examples noted in this section, we introduce the key concepts of formal specification. But we do so without emphasizing the mathematics that are required to make the specification formal. In the next section, we consider these mathematics.

Nokia Normandy budget Android phone leaked again in new purported render

Nokia may not have officially revealed plans for making Android devices, but rumours about the company's first Android-powered smartphone, thought to be codenamed Normandy, are buzzing again.
@evleaks has posted a render showing Nokia's alleged first Android smartphone, Normandy in various colour variants. The tweet reads, "Nokia Normandy, 2013" and includes the purported render of the device. The tweet also indicates that Nokia might launch the alleged Normandy by end of this year.
The Nokia Normandy's leaked render shows the yet-to-announced device sporting a similar design to the Asha touch range of phones. There is a physical back button on the front panel of the alleged Normandy, as seen in leaked render. The rear panel is seen with the camera accompanied by the Nokia logo branding in the middle. The rumoured Nokia Normandy can be expected to come in Black, Cyan, Mint Green, Red, Yellow and White colours, if the leaked render is believed.
If the rumours turn out to be true, Nokia, which has been supporting the Windows Phone platform like a lone ranger, might be finally changing gears and entering Android segment with its first device.
Earlier, a report had claimed that the Finnish handset maker might launch the Normandy in 2014 and described the Nokia Normandy efforts as 'full steam ahead'. The report also revealed that Nokia, following the lead of Amazon, has been working on a fully-tailored or forked version of Android, like the software on the online retail giant's Kindle Fire tablet range.
Further, the alleged Nokia Normandy has been said to be targeted at the low-cost segment as an Asha-equivalent smartphone, but with access to more traditional smartphone apps - a benefit that the report suggested has been missing in Nokia's dated Series 40-based Asha phones.
As of now, there is no clarity whether the alleged Nokia Normandy Android phone is real or just a rumour. However, contradicting the rumours about a Nokia Android phone, Stephen Elop, the former CEO of Nokia had said in July that the company made the right decision by choosing Windows Phone over Android.

Google asks US court to rule that Android has not infringed Rockstar patents

Google has asked a court in California to rule that it does not directly or indirectly infringe seven patents of Rockstar Consortium, after the Microsoft, Apple, BlackBerry, Ericsson and Sony backed patent firm sued seven of Google’s Android partners in a court in Texas.
The lawsuits filed in October in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas, Marshall Division, have placed a cloud on the Android platform, threatened Google’s business and relationships with its customers and partners and its sales of Nexus-branded Android devices, and created a justiciable controversy between Google and Rockstar, Google wrote in a complaint this week in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California.
Rockstar acquired Nortel Networks’ patents for US$4.5 billion after outbidding Google in 2011. It filed lawsuits in October against Samsung Electronics, HTC and five other companies alleging infringement of some or all of seven patents.
Samsung’s Mobile Hotspot feature, which allows sharing of a mobile device’s data connection with other devices by turning it into a wireless access point, is alleged to infringe claims of U.S. Patent No. 6,128,298 (“the ‘298 patent”) entitled “Internet Protocol Filter,” for example.
Describing the lawsuits by Rockstar as “Android OEM actions,” Google said in its filing that Rockstar has asserted its patents only against “certain mobile communication devices having a version (or an adaption thereof) of [the] Android operating system.” Each of the “Android OEM Defendants” also makes other products that do not use Google’s Android platform, Google added. Rockstar has also alleged patent infringement by Nexus 7, a device offered for sale by Google and built by Asus, one of the “Android OEM Defendants,” according to the filing.
Google claims that its Android platform and the Nexus 5, 7 and 10 devices it sells directly or indirectly do not infringe any claim of the seven patents in the suit. It has asked the court for a declaration that both Android and the Nexus devices do not infringe Rockstar’s patents.
The Internet company has described Rockstar as a firm that “produces no products and practices no patents” in its filing. “Instead, Rockstar employs a staff of engineers in Ontario, Canada, who examine other companies’ successful products to find anything that Rockstar might use to demand and extract licenses to its patents under threat of litigation.”
Google said the California court had jurisdiction as, among other reasons, Rockstar’s shareholders like Apple in Cupertino, California, “direct and participate in Rockstar’s licensing and enforcement efforts against companies in California.”
In a separate action, Rockstar and subsidiary NetStar Technologies have alleged that Google has infringed seven other patents acquired from Nortel. The patents, all titled “Associative Search Engine,” relate to an invention used to provide advertisements based on users’ search terms. Google has asked for a 30-day extension of time to file its response to the complaint, which was granted by the court in Texas. Advertisements around search terms is a key component of Google’s business.

Did you find a new Android phone among your holiday gifts? Well here’s another gift: Five of them, actually. These tips and apps will make that new Android phone even better.

don’t know how many people found an Android smartphone among their holiday gifts although I suspect it was more than a few. There’s no lack of good options available from Samsung, HTC, LG, Motorola and others. No matter what Android phone you might have unwrapped, however, there are a few easy things you can do to make the experience a great one.

Find a keyboard that works the way you do. I actually like the stock Google keyboard that comes with Android, but everyone is different. Luckily, Android lets you install and use the keyboard — or keyboards, for that matter — you prefer. A quick search in the Google Play store will get you started but most people can’t go wrong with SwiftKey.
This app uses smart word prediction combined with a way to intelligently learn your personal typing styles by analyzing messages from Facebook, Twitter (twtr), Gmail and more. Even if you don’t use that function, this is still one of the best third-party keyboards on the market. By the way: The stock Google Keyboard also supports swyping, or sliding your fingers from key to key, so don’t overlook that feature.
Turbo-charge your camera. There’s nothing wrong with the camera apps that Google and its hardware partners provide. If you want to take your mobile photography to another level though, the free VSCO Cam app is a must-have. The software includes 10 presets for image manipulation while others are available for purchase. You might not need to spend a dime though: The basic imaging tools are top-notch and can vastly improve photos which can be shared directly to various social networking sites. Another tip: Find a place to store those photos in the cloud. Dropbox and Google+, to name a few, offer automatic photo backup services.
Unleash a watch-dog on your mobile data. A number of apps are available to make sure you don’t go over your monthly mobile broadband limit, but don’t overlook the one that’s built right into Android. Hop into your phone’s Settings and look for the Data Usage app.

Here you can set a warning for a certain amount of mobile broadband use in your billing cycle, such as 1.5 GB if you have a 2 GB plan, for example. My phone, a Moto X, doesn’t let me set a warning but it does have the rest of the Data Usage functionality, showing me how much data each application uses. If your Android doesn’t have this function, consider the free Onavo Count app. And if you want to squeeze more bits from your data plan, the Onavo Extend companion app could help: It compresses data so you can get surf online more by using less data.
Turn your phone into a personal assistant. Built in to the latest version of Android is something called Google Now. To take advantage of it, you have to allow Google to access your personal information, such as your email, calendar and location. If you’re using an Android phone, chances are you’re already doing that already, so why not get something in return?
Google Now is like Siri on steroids: You can do voice queries with it, but it can also proactively ping you with useful information. Traffic building up on the way to your next appointment? Google Now will automatically tell you to leave earlier. Got a package on the way? Google Now will track it for you. The full list of features and functions is right here but unless you opt in, you’re missing out. Just swipe up from the Home button on your Android phone to see Google Now for an explanation of the service and a check box that say’s, “OK, I’m in!”
Remove the clutter from websites for a distraction-free browsing experience. I recently found a way to replicate this feature found on Apple’s(aapl) iPhones: In iOS it’s called Reader and with a tiny bit of effort you can have the same functionality on your Android phone. Just follow these five steps and instead of reading busy web pages filled with ads and other distractions, you’ll see just the pure content in the Chrome browser for Android.
