So You Want To Be A Ham?

Becoming an amateur radio operator (ham) may seem like a daunting challenge. But like anything else you want to attain in life, you just need to do a little work in the area of study and concentration. The members of our amateur radio club, the Ellijay Amateur Radio Society (EARS), want to help you in that quest.

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has set up a system under which Amateur Radio Operators prepare a large pool of questions covering FCC rules and regulations, radio operations and frequencies, and the technical aspects of the amateur radio service and hobby. The FCC system established Volunteer Examination Coordinator (VEC) organizations made up of amateur radio operators who are the liaisons between the public and the FCC licensing bureau. The VEC recruits General and Extra class hams who set up Ham-Cram sessions in their localities. These local hams are called Volunteer Examiners (VEs). One member of a VE team is the local administrator who schedules the Ham-Cram sessions.

Our club can set up a special study program that will get you familiar with what you will need to know not only pass the Technician Class exam, but also educate you in what is behind all the FCC rules and the radio theory that make up the questions on the exam.

The Ham-Cram procedure consists of the following:
Registering for the Ham-Cram session.
Paying a one-time $20 fee that is used to defray the cost of materials for the study guides and the exam booklets, forms and postage. The club does not receive any profit from these fees.
Preparing for the Ham-Cram session by studying materials provided in a study guide prior to coming to the Ham-Cram session.
On the Ham-Cram session day, you must be prepared to spend the entire day from 8am until around 5pm. There will be frequent breaks and a short lunch period. You must bring your own lunch.
Your instructors will cover all the material you have studied prior to the Ham-Cram session and will expand on that material by showing slide presentations that illustrate many facets of ham radio and give you a deeper understanding of the subjects you will be tested on during the exam.
Near the end of the day, after the training portion of the Ham-Cram session, you will take the Technician exam. Here is great news! We have had better than a 90% passing rate among the students in our previous Ham-Cram sessions.
Upon successfully passing the exam, your papers will be turned over to the VEC of the Western Carolina Amateur Radio Society (WCARS) who will process your application with the FCC. You will shortly have your new amateur radio call sign. You will then embark into one of the world’s most fascinating hobbies and public service programs.

Harold Jones (Died December 27, 2011)

Mr. Harold Wade Jones, 68, of Rocky Face passed away Tuesday December 27, 2011 at his home. Mr. Jones was preceded in death by his parents Ray G. and Lucy Jones; and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, the Rev. Thad and Pauline Osborne. Harold was a loving husband and father. He worked for the City of Dalton as a supervisor and was responsible for many of the beautiful parks and fountains throughout the city. He was an avid ham radio operator and was a past president of the Dalton Amateur Radio Club. Mr. Jones is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Peggy Osborne Jones of Rocky Face; daughters and sons-in-law, Wadean and Charlie Hinchey of Jacksonville, FL. and Cindy and Randy Chadwick of Rocky Face; brother and sister-in-law, Asa and Bertice Jones; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Levonne and Tatum Green, Sandra and Reginald Inman and Tinzie and Joe Spann; grandson, Justin Hinchey; nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. Funeral services will be Friday at 2:30 P.M. in the chapel of Love Funeral Home with the Rev. Ed Pippin officiating. Burial will be in West Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Love Funeral Home Friday from 12 to 2:30 P.M. The family ask that flowers please be omitted and memorials may be made to the American Diabete’s Association, 225 Peachtree St. N.E., Suite 550, Atlanta, Ga. 30303. Words of comfort may be sent to the family at lovefuneralhomega.com. Love Funeral Home, 1402 N. Thornton Ave., Dalton (across from Hamilton Medical Center) is in charge of arrangements.

FCC Amateur Radio License Exam

FCC Amateur Radio License Exam session in Ellijay, GA

Date: Saturday, January 14

Time: 10:00 am for examinees; 9:30 am for Volunteer Examiners

Location: Albert E Harrison Memorial Hall, corner of Dalton St(Hwy 52 West) and College Street in Ellijay, GA.

What to bring:
- Examinees bring Picture ID, Original and a copy of any current Amateur FCC License or a CSCE from a recent exam session, $10.00 examination fee (exact cash or check made out to WCARS) and you will need to know your Social Security number for the FCC forms you will fill out.
- Ellijay VEs - bring your copy of the Ellijay VE manual as I may have some updates for you.

Forms: All necessary FCC and WCARS VEC forms will be furnished.

Any exam candidates not registered as of December 28, 2011, should contact Dave Meadows no later than January 13 2012 at 12 noon. Please indicate the class of license for which you will be a candidate. Directions will be furnished to out-of-town candidates.
