Noli Me Tangere: A Halloween Party

In our century, Trick or Treat activities and Halloween parties have somewhat become a norm, partly due to us being heavily influenced by American culture and commercialism.

A few years ago, the National Museum of the Philippines Fine Arts held an exhibit comprising 28 paintings by Leonardo Tayao Cruz depicting various scenes from Noli Me Tangere. Unfortunately, the paintings have since been returned to the artist's family and are no longer publicly exhibited. However, I had the chance to see them in person and chronicled them in one of my most popular blog posts.

When reading Jose Rizal's first novel, Noli Me Tangere (published in 1887), he introduces us to a party held on October 31. The host was so rich and influential that even though it was an impromptu gathering, the people of Intramuros, Binondo, and its environs were in a frenzy to be included. Some were invited, but others were planning to gatecrash, knowing that the gracious host would welcome anyone and everyone.

I am sharing a few passages from the first chapter of Noli Me Tangere, entitled in the original Spanish as "Una Reunión." I'll be using León María Guerrero's English translation, where he uses the title "A Party."

Guerrero's translation is now widely available, as this is the version Anvil Publishing currently uses.

Leon Ma. Guerrero was connected to José Rizal through marriage. Guerrero's sister, the writer and historian Carmen Guerrero Cruz Nakpil, was first married to Ismael Argüelles Cruz, a descendant of Rizal's sister, Maria Rizal Cruz.

"Don Santiago de los Santos was giving a dinner party one evening towards the end of October in the 1880's. Although, contrary to his usual practice, he had let it be known only on the afternoon of the same day, it was soon the topic of conversation in Binondo, where he lived, in other districts of Manila, and even in the Spanish walled city of Intramuros.

Don Santiago was better known as Capitan Tiago—the rank was not military but political, and indicated that he had once been the native mayor of a town. In those days he had a reputation for lavishness. It was well-known that his house, like his country, never closed its doors – except, of course, to trade and any idea that was new and daring."

"The dinner was being given in a house on Anloague Street which may still be recognized unless it has tumbled down in some earthquake."

"The dinner guests were gathered in the main reception room which had great mirrors and chandeliers. On a pinewood platform stood enthroned a magnificent grand piano, for which an exorbitant price had been paid, and which this night seemed more precious still because nobody was presumptuous enough to play on it. There was also a large portrait in oils of a good-looking main in a frock coat, stiff and straight, as well-balanced as the tasseled cane of office between his rigid ring-covered fingers, who seemed to be saying: 'See what a lot of clothes I have on, and how dignified I look!'

In an earlier post, I shared that Crispy Pata will be part of my Last Meal List. Another dish that I would also include is Steak.

The first time I ever had a proper beef steak dinner was when I was around 5 or 6 years old. And when I say "proper" — I mean the works. I was with my Aunt, Uncle, and cousins. We were served with a creamy soup, followed by a Caesar salad with crunchy croutons, and then finally the main dish --- a whole steak plate just for me. My aunt had to slice the meat for me, and the first bite, which I distinctly remember, the steak was juicy, soft, and all beef flavor. I've always remembered that food memory because of that experience. It's all embedded in my core memory.

At that time, I didn't know what the name of that steak restaurant was. Years later, my parents and I were talking and I told them of this dining experience. My Dad said that that restaurant could have been Mario's in Tomas Morato because it was very well-known for their steaks.

My family loves to eat steak, except for my Mom, who prefers a different style of cooking for beef. It's become a part of our New Year's Eve Media Noche to have steak as part of our dinner table. Santis Delicatessen in Timog Avenue has become a go-to steak store. It's a little bit expensive but definitely worth it. The different steak cuts guarantee a melt-in-your-mouth experience.

If Santis is for special occasions, Landers or Marketplace offers good choices of beef as well for everyday cooking. In Cebu, there are now specialty stores that offer that delicatessen experience.

I haven't mastered the perfect way of cooking steak. So I end up eating them in restaurants. I normally order the dry-aged ones in my favorite Korean barbecue place and they're cooked over the grill. The Pig & Palm's Wagyu Striploin and Wagyu Ribeye are a delight, and as expected from a Michelin Bib Gourmand restaurant.

Another unforgettable experience that I have when it comes to steak was when I attended a special dinner hosted by Anzani Restaurant, the Australian Trade Commission, and Meat and Livestock Australia. One of the main courses was the Cape Grim grass-fed Beef Tenderloin Truffle. It was grilled pink or medium-rare. It was one of the best steak dinners I've had.

Marco Polo Hotel's Blu Bar & Grill is also known for their steaks. One of the things that I'm planning to do is have their Churrasco Nights and get my fill of beef.

One of my current steak places in Cebu is Yappari Steak. They have affordable steak options and what I like about the restaurant is you can cook it according to your liking.

Cooking steak is a challenge. You have to master the perfect temperature for that perfect doneness. Different beef cuts will also entail different temperatures. And depending on the diner, no one has agreed on what is the best way to eat a steak. Some say that rare is the best, others medium-rare or medium-well, but never well-done. I even read in one of Jeffrey Archer's novels about a character who asked how the quality of the steak was—and if it's of excellent quality, just have it passed over the light of a candle. I can't imagine eating steak that way.

I'm a steak aficionado and I can have it everyday. And that's also my reason why I would have it on my Last Meal list.

Chasing Flavor Memories at Super Bowl of China

During the 2000s and into the early 2010s, one of our go-to Chinese restaurants whenever we found ourselves in Makati was Super Bowl of China. Their branch in Glorietta 4 was where we usually ate, and we would even bring visiting friends and family members there.

We were so familiar with their food that we didn't even have to look at the menu. Daddy would usually order the beef with broccoli, Mommy would get the sweet and sour pork, and we would always round it out with their version of Birthday Noodles, yang chow fried rice, fried cuttlefish, and the chicken with cashew nuts.

Super Bowl of China might not have been a high-class establishment, but they definitely had a flavor profile that became a comfort—and was slightly addictive. My real test for Chinese food is always the leftovers; if they taste even better when you reheat them, you know it's good.

As with most traditional Chinese restaurants, they served their food family-style, giving everyone a chance to sample each dish. My only regret from back then was never trying their Peking duck, which was always on display at the roasting station right by the waiting area. There was also a crowd whenever we dined there, whether it was for lunch or dinner.

Eventually, they closed their stores, though I'm not entirely sure why. Because of that, I was surprised to find out they’ve had a recent revival. They now have a branch here in SM City Cebu, and I think there has also been a change in ownership.

A few weeks ago, we had lunch there out of pure nostalgia. Unfortunately, a lot of the original dishes are no longer offered—the chicken with cashew nuts and the cuttlefish are both gone from the menu.

For our lunch that day, we ordered the yang chow fried rice, lemon chicken, and beef with broccoli. The portion sizes were generous and the pricing was reasonable, but for me, the flavors lacked that distinct Chinese umami that would bring back my old Super Bowl memories.

I think the lemon chicken could be better if they fried it a little longer, since the lemon sauce made it soggy. I was expecting the beef sauce to pack a punch as well, but for me, it lacked that distinct ginger flavor. The yang chow saved the day, though—it had that great hint of smoky taste you only get when fried rice is cooked in a wok.

Still, if you're looking for budget-friendly Chinese food, I would recommend giving them a try. After all, taste is subjective and my palate might be different from yours. Is it worth a visit? I would say yes.

A Numismatic Collector's Dream: The Philippine 500-Peso Bill

What happens when two Aquinos and a Marcos are in the same place?

Of all the days to really notice the 500-peso bill that crossed my hand — today of all days.

August 1, 2009, was when former Philippine President Corazon Cojuangco Aquino passed away. She joined her husband, Benigno "Ninoy" Aquino, Jr., on the obverse side of the 500-peso bill under the New Generation Currency series in 2010. Senator Aquino’s portrait had first appeared on the 500-peso bill back on August 21, 1987.

Fast forward to 2022: when Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr. won the presidency, all banknotes printed after his inauguration carry his signature.

And that is where this single 500-peso bill captures a rare historical overlap—something we will likely never see again. President Corazon C. Aquino, Senator Benigno S. Aquino, Jr., and President Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr. are names that were never supposed to exist together on a single banknote.

With the rollout of the new Philippine Polymer Banknote Series, these historical figures are giving way to native flora and fauna.

Today is Your Last Chance to See the Tampinco Masterpieces at the National Museum of the Philippines Fine Arts

Classical Statues Exhibition National Museum of the Philippines Fine Arts - Last Day, July 19, 2026

How sad that today, July 19, is the last day for the Filipino public to see the artistry of both master sculptors and woodcarvers, father and son Isabelo (1850–1933) and Vidal Tampinco (1893–1963), at the National Museum of the Philippines Fine Arts. The Ernesto and Araceli Salas Collection of Classical Tampinco Sculptures will now be returned to the owners. They have graciously lent the collection to the National Museum for the past 15 years. Tampinco and his son were widely known for their exquisite sculptures and statuary.

Isabelo Tampinco y Lacandola propagated the beauty of Philippine flora and fauna by incorporating them into his designs. His Taller de Escultura de Isabelo Tampinco (e hijo) was renowned for the Estilo Tampinco, which contributed heavily to the success and popularity of the workshop. His wide variety of work (and that of his heirs) encompasses furniture, altars, civic buildings, churches, monuments, mausoleums, markers, and more.

Ironically, and in my opinion, not highlighted enough, the National Museum of Fine Arts is housed in what was once the Legislative Building. When it was originally conceptualized and designed in 1916, Isabelo and his sons, Angel and Vidal, were major contributors. When construction started in 1918, their craftsmanship became deeply rooted and ingrained in the very fabric of the building.

This is highly evident in the Session Hall—now Gallery XIX—which exhibits Carlos "Botong" Francisco's monumental painting, Filipino Struggles Through History. From the ornate ceiling to the statues surrounding the hall, the details were originally sculpted and crafted by the Tampincos. The allegorical figures on the pediments represented Art, Commerce, Education, Politics, War, and Law.

When the old Legislative Building was heavily damaged during World War II, Vidal Tampinco painstakingly re-created the Hall during the restoration starting in 1946.

By the way, the National Museum of the Philippines Fine Arts building is currently celebrating the 100th anniversary of its inauguration.

Spanish Friars and Philippine Cattle Ranches

In a 1588 memo that King Felipe II of Spain sent to Nuevo España (Mexico), he arranged that, "doze yeguas, y dos cavallos, veinte y quatro vacas y dos toros" (12 mares, 2 horses, 24 cows, and 2 bulls) be shipped to the Philippines at a cost of 4, 000 pesos to the royal treasury. This was to supplement the fledgling colony's supply of cattle.

An earlier report made by the Royal Audencia in 1585, announced the arrival of imported cattle from China. These Chinese and Mexican breeds of cattle formed the DNA of present-day Philippine bovine.

The various religious orders propagated estancias de ganado or cattle ranches to help sustain their missions. Ranches were founded in Batangas, Iloilo, Laguna, Tayabas, Pangasinan, Masbate, Nueva Ecija, Bicol, and Cebu. Cattle were raised free-ranged throughout these rancherias.

Cattle ranches in Cebu were established by the Augustinians in their Talisay Estate while the Jesuits (before their 1867 expulsion) formed the Estancia de Mandaue. After the ranches, settlements followed since people flocked where food and work are readily available.

With the arrival of the Spanish, beef became part of the Philippine diet.

Remember those 1990s movies like Sleepless in Seattle, Notting Hill, You've Got Mail, and Simply Irresistible, or other romantic films that feature community markets? Those scenes make the movies much more interesting and realistic in many ways.

I’ve always loved going to weekend markets because of the sense of community one feels while there. There’s no rush—you take your time choosing your vegetables, fruits, and ready-to-eat meals. There is no pressure, whether you’re there for a quick bite, buying a handful of onions or garlic, or just wanting to drink some fresh coconut juice. And you can definitely say that it's a quintessential Cebu food place because of the abundance of mangoes and lechon.

Support Local, Support Fresh: Direct from farmers' farms in Cebu.

While going around, you might also spot familiar faces and friends, just as I did when I dropped by the Saturday Farmer's Market at the Marco Polo Plaza Hotel Cebu. It really got me thinking that events like this keep people connected and continue that neighborly vibe.

This Saturday Market—which features budding entrepreneurs, home cooks proudly showing off their specialties, and true-blue farmers selling various produce directly from their farms—is both an avenue and a venue for Cebuanos to support their local communities.

The Farmer's Market at Marco Polo Plaza Cebu is open every Saturday from 7:00 AM to 2:00 PM. And as proof of the need for this type of social network, it is now celebrating its 5th anniversary.

Salapi: The Numismatic Heritage of the Philippines

In December 2018, I was fortunate to be part of a special tour of the BPI Museum in Cebu City. The museum is housed in a Neoclassical architectural building designed by Juan Marcos Arellano. The design was popular during the American Colonial Period. Arellano also designed the Cebu Provincial Capitol building in 1937.

Opened in 1941, the building became the main branch of the Bank of the Philippine Islands. Located at the crossroads of Magallanes and P. Burgos streets and situated on a parcel of land formerly owned by the Augustinian Order.

In 1991, the BPI building was declared a National Historical Landmark and bestowed with a marker. Another milestone for it happened in 2011 when the BPI Museum was officially opened during the bank's 160th anniversary. And recently, in 2024, it was declared an Important Cultural Property.

During that museum visit, we were guided by Mr. Carlos L. Apuhin, who championed the creation of the BPI Museum. Mr. Apuhin used to be the manager of that particular branch. In fact, he also worked with a cousin of mine when they were both with BPI. The BPI Museum is dedicated to the history of banking with artifacts that include one of the first ATMs, an early 20th-century heavy vault, accounting books, and other various banking-related items.

The best part of the museum is their Money collection. I wrote about that visit in a 2018 December article. You can find the link to that post in the Comment section.

The BPI Collection has some of the rarest money currency that circulated in the Philippines. From the 16th century Macuquina (cob) coins to the famous 'Pieces of Eight' (Dos Mundos) to the first-ever Peso Fuertes and various 20th century incarnations. The whole history of Philippine Currency can be learned in this Cebu Museum.

The coffee table book, "Salapi: The Numismatic Heritage of the Philippines", authored by Mr. Carlos Ledesma Apuhin and Professor Jobers Reynes Bersales was published in 2014 by the BPI Foundation, Inc. It has 287 pages and features the numismatic collections of BPI, the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, and private individuals.

I first saw a copy displayed at the museum, but by that time, copies were hard to find.

A couple of years later, at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, I was lucky to get the book directly from Mr. Apuhin. He graciously signed the book. I hope that I'll have an opportunity for Professor Jobers to autograph it as well.

I'm still saving up for Professor Ambeth R. Ocampo's massive book, "Yaman: History and Heritage in Philippine Money The Numismatic Collection of the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas". Professor Ocampo did mention that an online version is available, but owning a hard copy is still the best choice for me.

I am planning to visit the BPI Museum this year and review their exhibits again, just in time for the bank's celebration of its 175th Anniversary.

About 5 years ago, I wrote an article about Chinese-inspired Fu or Foo dogs guarding the entrances of Catholic Churches in the Philippines. These Fu Dogs are actually Chinese Lions that symbolize protection.

In Cebu, two churches have these Chinese Lions. Both the Basilica Minore del Santo Niño and the Cebu Metropolitan Cathedral have a pair of these mythical symbols sculpted in granite stone or piedra china securing the front entrances.

I've often wondered why all of these Cebuano Chinese lions are all males. Traditionally, these lions are depicted as male-female pairs since each one brings a different set of meanings. Male lions defend the physical structure, while the female ones safeguard the people inside. How would one know which is which? Usually, the male lion is holding a ball and the female lion is with a cub/s.

I hope the Archdiocese of Cebu would consider removing the black paint covering their pair since it hides the beauty of the original centuries-old granite stone. Looking closely at these heritage lions, sections of the statues have already peeled off paint. I know there might not be enough time, but it would be nice to see the lions restored to their original state before the Feast Day of St. Vitalis (San Vidal) on April 28.

Chinese Writing on Paved Stones, Intramuros

During the 250 years of the Manila-Acapulco Galleon Trade, Chinese merchants sold almost every item for which they could earn money. Even the blocks of granite that were used as ballasts to keep the Chinese junks balanced and steady throughout the journey from China became big business. The merchants would arrive, sell their wares, and then go back to China with their ships filled with Philippine hardwood, rice, silver, beeswax, and other products.

These granite stone ballasts became known as piedra china (piedra de china). The demand grew because these ballasts were used as flooring for houses, buildings, and even as roads.

In the heritage resort of Las Casas de Acuzar in Bataan, one of the houses there, Casa Hidalgo, has an entire block of piedra china covering a section of its ground level or zaguan. The house was originally built in Quiapo in the 19th century and was celebrated for its unique Ionic columns. The piedra china was part of the carriage way of the house. The house and its materials were transported to Bagac in 2006.

Different sizes were sourced from the imported blocks of piedra china, and standard sizing became the norm. There were the elongated ones that are measured as 150 to 250 centimeters long by 20 to 40 centimeters wide. Another size was 60 centimeters square and four to five inches thick.

Because of the popularity of piedra china, which caused a high demand, Chinese merchants became resourceful and started bringing wide, flat stones that seemed to resemble tombstones or markers. How can we say these are meant for graves? One theory was the Chinese lettering found on these stones. These markers might have been prepared as gravestones by enterprising artisans or merchants, but since exporting them was more valuable, they became a commodity.

These stones were then cut into standard paving blocks. You can still see examples of these marked stones on the streets of Intramuros, particularly General Luna, Cabildo, and Real, as well as the parking area of San Agustin Church.

Tombstones as road materials? Is it a historical myth or reality? We cannot prove or disprove it because of the lack of historical data.

On your next visit to Intramuros, try to look for these stones that have Chinese writing on them. Please remember to be respectful of our heritage sites and places. Don't resort to vandalism or destruction. We want to ensure that future generations will also have the opportunity to learn and enjoy them.

Taguktok na Tilapia or Picadillo

One of the most requested dishes that I ask Mommy whenever I go home is her Taguktok na Tilapia. My Mom is from Albay,, and it is very common for their food to be cooked in gata or coconut milk plus have lada or chillies in it. This is one of those meals where Tilapia takes center stage.

Tilapia is one of my favorite fish varieties. For me, it's a very versatile fish that can be used in different kinds of dishes. Having family roots particularly in Central and Southern Luzon, where fish ponds propagate, Tilapia is always available.

I used to cook Taguktok in Cebu (not as delicious as my Mom's), but haven't in the past few years because of the scarcity of Tilapia in most Cebu groceries. Our neighborhood supermarket used to sell Tilapia, but after the Covid 19 Pandemic, they stopped their fish inventory. Cebuanos are not a fan of the Tilapia since they have an abundant supply and variety of saltwater fish.

And yes, certain wet markets here in Cebu do sell Tilapia. I've tried it several times in the past. But nowadays, I find it more convenient to buy supplies in grocery stores.

When I was researching Taguktok, I could not find it in any Bicolano recipes. I figured that the term 'Taguktok' is a local term used for the dish in my Mom's hometown of Ligao City, and not exactly used elsewhere. I asked around, searched online, and finally found a similar dish called Picadillo or Sinanglay in other parts of the Bicol region.

The main ingredients or how the fish should be prepared and cooked are described the same way for all three dishes. This dish in my opinion, is actually considered low-maintenance because once you've placed everything in the pot, you just wait for it to be cooked, no poking, no turning it over, maybe a little tasting to ensure flavor.

Ideally, Taguktok should be Tilapia stuffed with onions, garlic, and tomatoes, then wrapped in pechay leaves and cooked over coconut milk. You add siling espada to add a chili kick to the dish. You can also add a little ginger to remove the lansa. But my Mom is not a fan of ginger, so she doesn't add any. Most of the time when we cook this dish, we can't find pechay leaves that are big enough to wrap the tilapia with.

Preparing Taguktok na Tilapia

One main thing that Mommy does not want to compromise when cooking Taguktok is the coconut milk. It has to be the real fresh coconut milk, not the ones sold in cans, especially not the powdered ones. She told me that when they tried the canned one, the flavor and texture were not comparable to when one uses real coconut milk.

Classics of Philippine Cartography Exhibit in Cebu

On January 26, 2026, I had the privilege to attend a lecture presented by esteemed Public Historian Professor Ambeth R. Ocampo, 'Maps and the Emergence of the Philippine Nation'. It was the 5th session in the Kartograpiya series of lectures sponsored by the National Museum of the Philippines - Cebu and PHIMCOS (Philippine Map Collectors Society).

The National Museum in Cebu is housing an exhibit of over 80 maps of the Philippines and Cebu in partnership with PHIMCOS. Curated by PHIMCOS members, Andoni Aboitiz and Margarita Binamara. Both Aboitiz and Binamara have Cebuano roots.

Classics of Philippine Cartography from the 16th to the 19th Centuries will be displayed until June 2026. I recommend that you visit the gallery and learn about our rich history and heritage through the story of the maps. This is a once-in-a-lifetime experience for most of us. I've been to the exhibit three times, and every visit is an eye-opener.

Murillo Velarde Map 1734

A reproduction of 'The Mother of All Philippine Maps', the 1734 Murillo Velarde map, is part of the exhibit as well as Antonio Pigafetta's depiction of Cebu and Mactan. The unique 1761 Aspecto Symbólico del Mundo Hispano by Vicente Laureano de Mamjie is also displayed. This map portrays the Hispanic World of 1761 as a crowned, standing female figure. As pointed out by Professor Ambeth R. Ocampo, the Philippines graces the lady's slippers, Luzon on her right foot and Mindanao on her left foot, while the Visayas is in between and Palawan below.

Maps dedicated to Cebu are also on display. An example is the Plano de la Ciudad de Cebu 1873 by Domingo de Escondrillas. This reproduction of the original map shows the center of Cebu City during the 19th Century. It depicts the Fort, the Cathedral, the Parian, and the Lutao areas of the original city and the emerging areas of Barrio de Cogon, Ermita, and the Carbon market. The original map is housed at the Ministerio de Defensa, Archivo General Militar Cartografia in Madrid, Spain.

After the lecture session, I approached Margarita Villalon Binamara after learning that she was there and asked to have a photo with her. I've been collecting The Murillo Bulletin, Journal of PHIMCOS, for six years now. One of the journals that I have is Bulletin no. 14, which is a special edition about the Mapping and History of Cebu. I brought it as a supplement to viewing the exhibit, which I wasn't able to do during my past visits. When Ms. Binamara saw my copy, she mentioned that it was already out of print.

I've always been fascinated with historical maps. An item on my bucket list is to own a copy of a vintage map, which is now expensive. One of my favorite Jan Vermeer paintings is the 'Geographer'. Unfortunately, during my Citizens Army Training for Officers in High School, reading maps was my weakest link. Good thing we now have Google Maps to assist us.

The gift shop of the museum is also selling the companion book of 'Classics of Philippine Cartography' exhibit, which features more maps and articles about them.

The National Museum of the Philippines-Cebu is open from Monday to Sunday, 9am to 5pm. It is beside Plaza Independencia.

Carmen Guerrero Nakpil's Heroes and Villains

The book, Heroes and Villains, authored by Carmen Guerrero Nakpil contains 17 brief true stories of little known facts about Philippine History --- the events, places, and people that are often overlooked and rarely talked about or highlighted. She shares tidbits about Pio del Pilar, the Spanish Residencia, the Chinese treasure fleet, Corruption in Ancient Manila, Macario Sakay, and Antonio Luna among other "intriguing" topics.

These histories were originally published by the Philippine Star's Art and Culture section between May 2008 and February 2009. The articles were collected and compiled into a book by Guerrero Nakpil's daughter and granddaughter, Gemma Cruz Araneta and Carmen Clara Cruz in 2010.

Heroes and Villains: Table of Contents

I was able to buy a copy of her book from Fully Booked Gateway Cubao Branch for 600php. It was a pleasant surprise to find this particular one. I even created a short YouTube video to review about it. The general writing is easy and uncomplicated to read. Ilustrations can also be found in some of its pages.

It's nice to know that Filipina historians are being discovered nowadays and being given importance similar to their male counterparts. Guerrero Nakpil was a celebrated writer, author, and historian who came from a family of writers, artists, medical practitioners, and scientists. Her grandfather was Leon Maria Guerrero, a well-known botanist and pharmacist. Leon's brother was Lorenzo Guerrero who was an 19th century artist and mentored various Filipino artists like Juan Luna. Her brother was diplomat and Rizal enthusiast, Leon Ma. Guerrero III. Carmen Guerrero Nakpil was also in Government Service, she was appointed as National Historical Commissioner during the Marcos period. She was first married to a Rizal family descendant , Ismael Cruz, in 1942 who was killed by the Japanese in 1945. She remarried in 1950 to a scion of the Nakpil clan, Angel E. Nakpil.

An Ode to the Pizza Toast

Pizza Toast

One of the easiest snacks we used to make when we were younger was the pizza toast. You just need bread, tomato (pizza) sauce, and toppings. Our Mom would make them for us as snacks or merienda. There was even a time that I sold them during a school fair.

We normally would use a baguette as the crust. And during that time, we bought our 'French' bread at Goldilocks when they were still selling a variety of baked goods. When our Mom would come home from work or from the mall with a baguette clasped in one arm, we knew we were in for a treat.

For the toppings, whatever cold cuts was available (ham, hotdog, or sausage, etc.), plenty of cheese, onions, and for added flavor, bell peppers or capsicum if we had one. We, usually, would use ingredients that were available during that time. Nothing fancy but tons of food happines.

My brothers and I would pile up the ingredients on the bread and toast them either in the small red toaster that my Mom won in a raffle or if we're making a lot, use the oven itself.

We liked our pizza really toasted for that extra bite plus the cheese really melts into the other toppings. The first taste says it all --- gooey cheese, crunchy bread, and savory meat.

I almost forgot about this memory and I was just reminded of it when we ordered a slice of pizza toast at a cafe. The texture and smell of the toast brought back happy and idyllic afternoons.

My nephews love pizza as well either with just cheese or pepperoni toppings and during a storm break from school, they also made their own DIY pizza.

Nowadays, if I'm craving for pizza, it's just so easy to order from one of the available pizza places that we have here in Cebu. I, usually, order from Greenwich. But, that's another tale for another time.

Fencing: a symbol of 19th-century Filipino 'manliness'

About two years ago, I bought a copy of "An Anarchy of Families: State and Family in the Philippines", edited by Alfred W. McCoy. This book was originally published in 1994, and even after almost four decades, what the book represents about political families and dynasties is very much alive today. The featured families in the book may no longer be significant in our times, but numerous replacements and "pretenders" have crowded the scene and made our situation even worse.

In one of the footnotes (page 32), McCoy noted that historian Vicente Rafael describes a photo of Juan Luna, Jose Rizal and Valentin Ventura in fencing attires as an embodiment of 'masculine solidarity': "Posing with their swords planted firmly between their legs, the Indios Bravos display a masculine alternative to what they perceived to be the menacingly androgynous...regime of the Spanish friars. That image of masculine solidarity is further suggested by the barely visible figure of a woman - Paz Pardo de Tavera, Luna's wife - situated in the background, at the margins of the frame, as if to signal the sexual hierarchy that patriotism reinstitutes...[T]his picture has the effect of remapping the body of the colonized subject in ways that peel away from the grid of colonial assumptions."

The Indios Bravos depicted in the photo were taken in 1890 at the Luna residence in Villa Dupont, 28 Rue Pergolese, Paris, France. Luna's wife Paz, can be seen in the left-hand corner of the photo with their son, Andres Manuel, or Luling (almost cropped out of the photo). Paz's mother, Donya Juliana, was bitterly against the marriage of her daughter to Luna.

McCoy added, "In his celebration of masculine liberation, Rafael does not mention that Luna would later use this martial training to beat Paz regularly and skillfully with his cane before shooting her fatally."

Celebrated Filipino painter, Juan Luna de San Pedro y Novicio, was often described as someone who had an artistic temperament, in short, hot-tempered and volatile. Fencing as a sport is considered elitist and for the privileged. The 19th century saw a surge in its popularity. Advocates of it explain its core to camaraderie, discipline, and self-improvement. Rizal's generation of exiles and emigres developed European tastes and embraced Fencing, willingly and enthusiastically.

Luna and his in-laws, the Pardo de Taveras, were photo enthusiasts. Trinidad, Paz's eldest brother, accumulated thousands of photos over the years, and these became the basis of the Trinidad H. Pardo de Tavera Collection found in the Ateneo de Manila University Rizal Library. Over the years, his descendants entrusted his photo and book collection to Ateneo. As the Pardo de Taveras were a wealthy family, owning a camera became part of their everyday lives.

The Pardo de Taveras wealth became a sour note in Luna's 'masculine' DNA. He resented that his mother-in-law, Donya Juliana Pardo de Tavera y Gorricho, was the one paying for their apartment rent and maybe for most of their household expenses. As Luna is fully reliant on his income as a painter and artist. The family dynamics also became a little more uncomfortable when Luna's younger brother, Antonio, started living with them in 1891 while studying at the Pasteur Institute as a chemist.

Donya Juliana and her sister, Donya Gertrudis, were married to siblings, Felix (pere) and Joaquin Pardo de Tavera. Felix died in the early 1860s, and Joaquin became a surrogate father to his nephews and nieces (Trinidad H., Felix (fils), and Paz). During the 1870s, the family emigrated to Paris because of the exile of Don Joaquin, as he was implicated in the 1872 Cavite Mutiny. He and his wife lived in the Marianas Islands for almost three years before being pardoned.

The Pardo de Taveras lived on the proceeds of their share of the Gorrichos' businesses in Binondo, Escolta, and Cavite, amongst others. Donya Juliana's family in Manila was one of the wealthiest during this time. They said that even though the majority of Gorricho's money was used as capital to fund their lifestyles in Paris over the years, they were still enormously rich decades after they all left the French capital.

Two years after this photo was taken, Luna will kill his wife and mother-in-law in a rage of jealousy and anger. He would be acquitted by the Paris Court in 1893 after being imprisoned during his trial.

Luna, together with his brother Antonio and son, Luling, will leave Paris and retreat back to the Philippines. How ironic that when the Luna brothers arrived in the Philippines, one of the first things that they did was to open the 'Sala de Armas', a fencing school located in Calle Alix (now Legarda Street)in the district of Sampaloc.

Our 35-year-old copy of Let's Cook with Nora

Ella Pangilinan Miranda, the daughter of Anthony Pangilinan and Maricel Laxa-Pangilinan, has a TikTok following because of her dinner hosting themes and aesthetic tableware and decor ideas.

In one of her videos, she was preparing for a dinner party and she could be seen consulting Nora Daza's quintessential cookbook, "Let's Cook with Nora". This classic culinary book has taught countless of homecooks how to prepare savory and sweet dishes for their families and friends.

My Dad's copy of the cookbook is more than 30 years old. It still brings its wisdom whenever we get stumped on a particular recipe. I can't count the times I've leafed through its pages, verifying ingredients and the how-tos of a recipe. And if my memory serves me right, I remember that I've brought this same book during my Home Economics classes in high school.

This beloved cookbook is one of our treasured books. Imagine surviving dust, heat, and endless page-turning and it still continues to be a valuable source of cooking tips.

The cookbook's easy to follow recipes and not hard to find ingredients are why people still continue to be guided by this. The featured dishes are not too fancy-schmancy or too technique-driven.

While browsing in National Bookstore, I was tempted to buy the new edition of "Let's Cook with Nora" which has been slightly updated by her daughter Nina Daza-Puyat. But, I didn't go through the purchase since I think the copy that we have still has its own charm.

Nora V. Daza was an original. She was the first woman to open a French-themed restaurant in the 1970s, Au Bon Vivant. It was a popular dining place. When my parents were still courting, one of their dates took place in Au Bon Vivant.

If the Michelin Guide came to the Philippines in the 1970s, Nora Daza would definitely have earned stars.

Being An Armchair Historian Made Me A Finalist

When I was younger, I wanted to be Indiana Jones. It was my dream to be a world-renowned archaeologist and travel the world. I also wanted to be a professional writer and author.

It seemed like an adventure to be an archeologist, traveling the world, visiting historic palaces, having fiery discussions, and writing about the discoveries and experiences.

For me, being a historian and a writer is the perfect combination. It has always been a passion of mine --- history and writing. Alas, I took a different path career-wise.

When blogging became popular, I saw it as an opportunity to pursue my interests. I'm not a professional nor the best, but what blogging did was to open my world to infinite possibilities. I have to admit, I'm also not consistent when it comes to creating content for my blog and other social media sites, since I also love my corporate career. I try my best to balance both worlds.

So far, 2025 has been a rollercoaster ride of sorts. But when October 1st came and I opened my email, I received a big surprise. I have been nominated as a Finalist for the Best Cebu Personal Blog Category by the Best Cebu Blogs Awards. This is my 6th nomination, with one win in 2021 for the same category.

This BCBA nomination means that blogging is alive and still significant. It will continue to fuel my enthusiasm to blog. Blogging has become part of my identity and brand. I hope that I can also inspire people to take the chance and work on their passion projects.

This year, my resolve is to focus more on history, culture, and books. I am disciplining myself to be consistent in my blog posts about these topics. I actually have tons of ideas, but just need to have a dedicated time to write about them.

Writing about history is a lesson in real life. You do your research, make sure that you cite your references, and if you can interview people, do so. You base your perspective on what you have on hand. You pour your blood, sweat, and tears in ensuring that the information that you provide is factual and correct. And in the course of it all, if you do make a mistake, own up to it and apologize.

I am very thankful to my readers and supporters, my family and friends, for being there all these times. When I started my blog in 2015, I never thought that I would be able to make a difference in my own special way. Gosh, now that I think about it, I'm also celebrating 10 years of blogging life.

I aspire to continue to be both an armchair historian and book collector, and be able to craft more stories and videos to share.

I'm ecstatic to be part of this year's roster for the Best Cebu Blogs Awards and am counting the days until November 27th, when the Awarding Ceremonies will be held at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and Casino.

A Sneak Peek at the 1734 Murillo Velarde Philippine Map

1734 Murillo Velarde Philippine Map on display at the National Museum of the Philippines - Cebu

One of the current Exhibits at the National Museum of the Philippines - Cebu is the "Classics of Philippine Cartography" in partnership with PHIMCOS showcasing Philippine and Cebu maps from the 16th to 20th Centuries. This gallery will be available until January 2026.

The most prized map on display is the 1734 Philippine Map made by Jesuit Priest, Fr. Pedro Murillo Velarde assisted by Filipino artisans like Nicolas de la Cruz Bagay and Francisco Suarez.

Fr. Murillo Velarde's map was the quintessential model for other mapmakers and cartographers of that era. What is unique about the original are the 12 vignettes surrounding the main map. Depictions of inhabitants both foreign and local, everyday life, Intramuros, Cavite, and Zamboanga are among the renditions.

And of course, proof that Panacot (Scarborough Shoal) is within our jurisdiction from that time until now. One of the copies of this map was used in the UN deliberation.

Another trivia about this particular copy of the Murillo Velarde map on display is that it is owned by a scion of the Ongpin family (e.g. heirs of Roman and Alfonso Ongpin). Plus, they can trace their ancestry to Damian Domingo, the first recognized Filipino painter who set-up an Art Academy in the early decades of the 19th Century. They are also PHIMCOS members.

For Cebuanos, if you look closely you can see some of the major towns and cities within the province albeit with different spelling. (e.g. Cabcar, Bolhon, Daraguete, Bantayan, etc.).

Albay is shown with Mount Mayon, but I couldn't find our hometown. But My Dad will be happy because Apalit, Pampanga, is shown prominently.

National Museum of the Philippines Cebu is open Mondays-Sundays, 9AM-5PM. It is located right beside Plaza Independencia.

Cebu's Parian District: Who Are The People In Your Neighborhood

The Parian District in Cebu City is the counterpart of Manila's Binondo. It was originally slated as a Chinese ghetto, according to American Professor and Historian, Michael Cullinane, but eventually, over the centuries, it emerged as the conclave of converted Chinese Mestizos (Mestizo de Sangley), who assimilated into Cebu society.

By the mid-19th Century and onwards, the Parian District was a bustling neighborhood, full of commercial businesses and residential areas. It became the sought-after neighborhood for the local elite. Most of today's prominent Cebuano families can trace their ancestry to those who lived on the streets of the Parian. Familiar surnames like Osmena, Leyson, Alducente, Andrada, Cabajug, Villa, Avila, Alburo, Reynes, Chiong Veloso, Noel, Garces, Gandiongco, Suico, Sanson, Rallos, Regner, Garces, and Climaco, are just some of the residents of the Parian.

Years ago, I wrote an article about various markers found on Colon Street that identified family houses and businesses. I haven't walked around Colon for years now, and I'm not sure if those markers still exist. It was an ambitious endeavor to promote Cultural and Historical Heritage in Cebu, but conservation and preservation, even for those markers, were not sustained.

At the end of the 19th century, Law offices, schools, a horse and carriage shop, blacksmiths, and even a photo studio were just some of the enterprises that could be found in the area.

Parian became a wealthy neighborhood, which was reflected in its Parish Church. Unfortunately, because of jealousy, the Parian church was dissolved and the building taken down.

In Resil Mojares' book about Casa Gorordo, published by the Ramon Aboitiz Foundation, Inc., there is a visual depiction of the Parian District dating from 1900 to 1920. It shows who were still living in Parian. By this time, the American Colonial Government was slowly divesting the Spanish Orders of their haciendas and selling them to the public. Most of the families who had been residing in Parian for decades or even centuries moved away and created new neighborhoods.

For Filipiniana book hunters, Fully Booked has been a treasure trove of both Fiction and Non-Fiction book finds.

Their Gateway, Powerplant, and Trinoma branches hold a fair amount of Philippine books published by Vibal Foundation, Ateneo Press, and even by small independent presses. Their Ayala Center Cebu branch has also given me some choice books, but some of the titles that I found in the Manila branches have not reached Cebu yet.

One book that I found while browsing in Fully Booked was "Luna, Arquitecto" by Saul Hofileña Jr. It takes a look at the only surviving son of Juan Luna and Maria de la Paz Pardo de Tavera Luna --- Andres Luna de San Pedro. Juan and Paz had two children, Andres, who was born in 1887 and Bibi (Maria dela Paz, named after their mother). Andres was the only child who survived into adulthood. Bibi's death at three years old was the catalyst of the 1892 tragedy.

The book came out in 2021 and was printed by Baybayin Publishing. It read like a novel, interesting and easy to read. But it's branded as a historical book. References used and researched by the author are also listed for further reading.

The book tackled the deaths of the de Tavera women and how Juan Luna got away with their murders. Since Hofileña is a lawyer, he delved into an understanding of the Penal Code that Luna's defense team used to their advantage. You might say that the Juan Luna tragedy is our version of the O.J. Simpson murder trial. A large part of the book was dedicated to the trial and histories of both of his families (Luna and Pardo de Tavera). The later chapters chronicled Luling's life after the deaths of his parents.

After reading the book, my conclusion was, it tried to answer two questions: How did the 1892 tragedy impact Andres Luna de San Pedro growing up, and the effects on who he became as a man. One of the results of what he experienced when he was five years old could have been his decision not to have children of his own. He was in his 40s when he married the American, Grace McCrea.

Andres or Luling as he was called by his parents, was, for me, a tragic figure. He witnessed how his father killed his mother and grandmother. And we can only imagine the emotional trauma he suffered from this event. His father was tried and imprisoned for the crime. Upon release from prison, he was brought back to the Philippines to live. He was orphaned again in 1899 when Juan Luna died of a heart attack in Hong Kong. He was cared for by his father's brother, Dr. Jose Luna, and his family. When Dr. Jose died in 1917, Andres was in Europe studying architecture.

Luling was influenced and molded by his Luna relatives rather than by his Pardo de Tavera family. But his financial needs were funded by his de Tavera inheritance. Mara Pardo de Tavera commented in one public post on Facebook that it was her grandfather, Trinidad, who funded Luling's European education because by this time, the 1910s, Andres' inheritance from his mother had already dwindled.

One of the things that I have been curious about is whether Jose Rizal communicated with the Lunas during this time of upheaval in 1892. With the hundreds, if not thousands, of letters that Rizal left, I've never encountered anyone who wrote or spoke about this incident concerning Rizal's relationships with the de Taveras and the Lunas. I asked eminent Rizal Historian, Ambeth R. Ocampo, about this, but he just made a vague comment.

I've always wondered how Rizal felt about the tragedy since he was friends with both the Luna and de Tavera families. In some ways, he was the one who brought the two families together. He was connected to the de Taveras first and introduced Juan Luna to the family.

Andres Luna de San Pedro y Pardo de Tavera became a popular architect during the American Colonial Period. The majority of his creations, unfortunately, were destroyed during World War II. Two of the buildings he designed along Escolta street in Manila still survives to this day, the Regina Building and First United Building (formerly known as Perez-Samanillo). Escolta was where his Pardo de Tavera ancestors made some of their fortune by providing zacate to the Spanish army and cavalry.

I recommend this book to those who are intrigued by the Luna-Pardo de Tavera saga.

Five Books about Cebu

I've always been a book reader and a book collector since I was younger. But, for the past six or seven years, I've mostly been collecting Filipiniana books. I have been trying to purchase more books about Cebu, Pampanga, and Albay since those have become my major interests in recent years. Pampanga and Albay, due to familial ties, and Cebu, where I have spent the past 20 years living.

The other day, I was trying to take an inventory of my collection, as it had been a while since I'd reviewed my books. I'm thinking of reorganizing my shelves according to geographical topics and realized that I already have several books dedicated to Cebu.

I still have books on my wish list, such as The War in Cebu, Kamingaw: An Impressionist Portrait of the Bisaya Painter (Martino Abellana) and Hikay: The Culinary Heritage of Cebu, all published by the University of San Carlos Press. I'm also planning to visit their Talamban office to check what else they have in stock, but I'm afraid to go because I will definitely spend a king's ransom on books. I normally contact their office via email to order books from them. It has been two years since my last purchase from USC Press.

In this article, I'll be sharing 5 books about Cebu with topics covering History, Culture, and Society for your consideration. I'll be covering more Cebu books in the future.

More Cebuano Than We Admit: Aspects of Cebuano History, Culture, and Society

Published by Vibal Foundation, Inc. and edited by Resil B. Mojares (National Artist for Literature) and Hope Sabanpan-Yu. This book is available through Vibal (Shopee, Lazada, and their website).

When the book was launched in January 2023 at Casiño Espanol in Cebu City, I was invited to attend the event. Unfortunately, that was also the same day that I was traveling back to Cebu from Manila. More Cebuano Than We Admit is full of essays about different topics pertaining to the contributions of the Cebuanos to the Filipino identity and psyche. It's a first for Vibal's More Than We Admit series to focus on a specific province and its characteristics.

One might find oneself reading about Pre-Colonial artifacts found while the Southern Road Properties were being built in the 2000s. Another article tackles about the religious devotion of the Santo Niño being compared to the Jesus Nazareno. The reader will also enjoy the excerpts of poems by well-known Cebuano poets. Professor Mojares writes about diving for coins, which was a draw in the port areas during the early days of tourism in Cebu. And of course, there is an essay about the majesty of Cebu Lechon.

Cebu Heritage Frontier: Argao-Dalaguete-Boljoon-Oslob

This book was published in 2004 by the Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc. and is being sold in the Casa Gorordo Museum Shop.

The book serves as a keeper of records of heritage monuments, churches, and houses located in Argao, Boljoon, Dalaguete, and Oslob of that time. The initial survey and research started in the late 1990s to the early 2000s. It contains photographs, maps, detailed descriptions, and short histories of these places of interest. Since it was published more than 20 years ago, we can assume that numerous changes to these places and sites have happened.

When I last visited Argao in 2019, I brought my copy of the book to try to find some of the sites mentioned. Alas, I wasn't able to go around the town and mainly stayed in the town plaza complex. I'm planning to go to Boljoon before the year ends, especially now that the much-talked-about Pulpit panels have been restored back to the church.

Handumanan: The Rosita Rodriquez-Arcenas Collection of Visayan Santos

The book was written by Dr. Clodoveo Nacorda and published by the University of San Carlos Press. The Rosita R. Arcenas Collection is divided into two exhibit galleries at the USC Museum in their Downtown Campus. This is another item on my must-visit list.

Mrs. Arcenas started her collection of religious art, images, and artifacts in the 1960s. Some of the oldest items in her collection can be traced back to the 1700s. The book is full of beautiful photos and descriptions of the collection.

But, with the recent issue of the repatriated Boljoon Church pulpit panels, we cannot imagine the magnitude of church treasures that are now in private collections here and abroad. Add to that, the religious images, artifacts, and items destroyed during World War II.

Life in Old Parian

Concepcion Gantuangco Briones was born in the early years of the 20th Century, when most of the Parian District was becoming more commercial rather than residential. Her memories and stories about life in the Old Parian of Cebu are incomparable. There are not a lot of books published about the everyday lives of the Parian residents, especially during the waning decades of the area. The destructive results of World War II created a mass exodus of Parian families to other neighborhoods of the growing city of Cebu. Ms. Briones was a leading journalist and author of her time.

One of the most intriguing stories that Ms. Briones shared was based on interviews she had with her older relatives. It was the sensational murder of a married woman and her alleged lover by her husband at the Fuente Osmena. There was a court case, and the husband was imprisoned for the killing. It all boiled down to jealousy. What I enjoyed while reading the book was the recollection of the daily rituals and lives of the Parian residents.

Life in Old Parian originally came out in 1983, published by the Cebuano Studies Center of the University of San Carlos. I was able to get a copy of the book in the Casa Gorordo Museum Shop.

Integración/Internación: The Urbanization of Cebu in Archival Records of the Spanish Colonial Period

This book is published by the University of San Carlos Press in partnership with the National Archives of the Philippines. It was edited by J. Elazar R. Bersales and Ino Manalo. This was one of my Pandemic purchases directly from the University Press Office. I've used this as a reference in some of my Cebu articles.

Integración /Internación contains essays written by prominent historians such as Danilo M. Gerona, Resil B. Mojares, Michael M. Cullinane, Trizer Dale D. Mansueto. The book contains photos of archival items dating as far back as the Spanish Colonial Period. The inspiration for the publication of the book stemmed from an Exhibition mounted at the University of San Carlos Museum and Museo Sugbo in 2014. The book serves as a catalog of information that most Cebuanos do not know about their city and province.

Seven years ago, my parents went on an Alaskan Cruise, and the home port was in Seattle, Washington.

They had a couple of free days before the actual voyage and planned to visit relatives living there. We mentioned to my parents that the first and original Starbucks store was located in Pike Place Market.

When Daddy learned about it, he immediately went to Pike Place, fell in line to get into the Starbucks store, and bought coffee mugs and tumblers for all of us. He carried his pasalubong like a badge of honor throughout the cruise, back to New Jersey, and then back home to Quezon City.

And now, one of those tumblers has been in Cebu and is a constant reminder of one of our parents' ways of showing their devotion to their children.

It also truly shows how our dad's love language manifests naturally within his family.

Seven years ago was also significant because a few weeks after my parents came home, Daddy was hospitalized due to a serious heart condition. We are fortunate and grateful that he has made significant progress in his recovery from that event.

So, for the past few weeks, I've been using this tumbler at work --- brought it out from storage. It's a constant reminder of Daddy's love and sacrifice.
