What are Gardening Techniques used at home?

All right so you're looking to start a garden well what do you need to do where do you start. I was out just getting our garden all set up this year. And I thought I would kind of walk through some of the steps. If you're just getting into gardening Or it’s been a long time since you've had a garden.

You want to get started whether you're in a country setting a suburban setting an apartment where ever you are and you'd like to just learn to start So You can in Gardeningopedia. and there's so many ways to to garden whether you have smaller large spaces for those container gardening raised bed gardening or traditional gardening. I have a combination of those all here so where do you start so the first thing you need to figure out when you're looking to start a new garden is where are you going to put it you need to pay attention to your yard.

Especially pay attention to where you get the most amount of sunlight generally most of your crops that you’re going to grow are going to do well in full Sun. Some crops like leafy green sand other things are going to do ok and part shade also but generally everything will do pretty good in full Sun with very few exceptions.So there are actually a few different apps that you can get for Android or iPhone that you can use to track the Sun path during different times of the year. So even if you’re planning your garden out in the winter time.You can use the app to set it to let's say July and figure out exactly.

Where the path of Sun is gonane in your yard you want to use that to figure out where you’re going to get the best amount of sunlight once you have a place picked out in your yard.you're watching have ready to get started you need to figure out what you're going to grow now.

Selecting crops:

Generally people especially new gardeners you want to go to the seed store and you look at all these great seeds on the rack or whatever at Home Depot or Ace Hardware or whatever it is that you go and foregoing to want to just pick out a whole bunch of stuff oh that looks good outhit was good.

I want to try that I want to try that there's nothing wrong with trying new things.But I would encourage you to stay focused on things that you eat things that you eat the most and also things that you can preserve so pay attention to what your family is using.

The most of if you guys have salads every day you want to grow a lot of salad greens if you guys eat a lot of tomato or tomato products you want to grow a lot of tomatoes you it's always great to try and experiment with new things.But you also just want to make sure the core of what you're growing is things that you're going to use there’s nothing worse than planting a garden weeding it taking care of it awesome.Then not really wanting to eat half the stuff you grew when it comes to August or September.

Buying Seeds:

So once you have some things picked out it's time to look at seeds now the best thing to do is buy your seeds earlier in the year so even during the wintertime months especially if you're in the northern climates.You can get better deals on seeds usually.To where I get almost all of my seeds for our home our kitchen garden here and that’s mi gardener my gardener has a YouTube channel also here on YouTube and he has a great seed store they're very inexpensive seeds they come with a great amount for small gardens in each packet and it's very affordable you get a 10cent discount on each packet.

Starting Seeds:

So once you have your seeds it’s time to figure out which things you need to start inside and which things that you can direct sow in the ground now this it really the varies on where you live here in the northern climates.Where we're going to want to start somethings inside any of your hot weather crops peppers tomatoes melons any of the things that on the seed packet.

It says the harvest is longer than 90 days.You want to make sure that you get those things started inside and it'll tell you on the seed packet if they're a 120 day harvest then you want to make sure that stuff has started inside there's lots of different videos that I've done and all those have done on how to start seeds inside.

I would have you check the the eye up in the corner there for some of those videos if you're interested you want to make sure that you start those things early in the northern climates.

If you don't start your tomatoes and peppers early you're probably not going to get a very good harvest now if you ‘rein the warmer climates down south you don’t have to worry too much about that you can probably start a lot of your seeds right in the ground in March or April.

Preparing Garden Space:

So now it's time to prepare your garden space there's so many different ways to do this you need to make a decision are you going to do raised bed gardens or are you going to do a traditional garden.Now there's lots of benefits to both traditional gardening is easy easy to get started.you can tow up a small spot of land with a shovel or rake you know whatever you want to do.

If you have a hint of motorized tiller you can you can start till up a patch land and you can start gardening you can amend the soil a little bit maybe with some compost or some other things where you’re planting and you're ready to go raise my gardening has a lot of great benefits.But you do have to purchase wood and build the raised beds or buy the raised beds and then you have to fill them with soil.

Even though they are a great way to go if you're just getting started don't be discouraged and pumping bunch of money into your garden.

It’s easy to start with traditional gardening if you've got the extra money in time and you want to get those raised beds set up there a little bit better long-term investment and they're a little easier as far as weeding and caring for the garden throughout the year.

Now we talk about soil amendments what kind of soil do you can you just throw stuff right in the ground do we need to do anything with the soil I would definitely encourage you to do some type of amendment to your soil.Whether you're going to do a soil mix in a raised bed or just traditional gardening with tilling in some manures and other organic matters.

You don't need to get as scientific as having your soil test and all that kind of stuff but generally the more organic matter you have the better if you have a local farm.You can geta load pack up truckload of compost or something like that and mix it in with your soil that would be great way to start. If you want a better soil mix I did a whole video on the best soil mix that we have found here and it includes sand peat moss and manure compost.

If you want to just go small and be real basic go to your Home Depot or Lowe's or whatever your home improvement store is. Ace Hardware and pick up a bag a place and a bag of peat moss and two bags of manure compost mix it together and you’re going to have a great soil mix so that’s just a real easy kind of bagged way to go and you can use that to amend soil or even fill a raised bed we talked about gardening.

Optional Start a Compost Pile:

We talked about soil amendments we can't talk about that without talking about compost. If you haven’t already started a compost pile start one right now it's one of the easiest and cheapest way is to get yourself some really good soil every single year for your garden kitchen scraps yard waste tree clippings leaves.

Whatever you have around you can use that in a very simple composting method without any fancy bins or barrels or anything like that take a section in your corner of your yard somewhere and make a pile that's all you need to do make a pile turn it once or twice a year with a pitchfork or shovel.

You’ve got yourself some good compost in one year’s time nothing fancy about it very easy to get started and it doesn't require any special bins and plans or anything like that.

If you've already started a compost pile great get out your compost from last year mixite in with your soil whether it’s locally right around each plant or tilling it into your whole traditional garden section or whether mixing it in with a raised bed that fresh compost Isa great way to get nutrients to your plants all right.

Planting:

So you're ready to get started planting there's lots of different ways to plant various kinds of vegetables I'm not going to go through how to plant everything generally the best thing to do is to look at the back of your seed packets if you're buying from my gardener there's a very good instructions detailed description on what the seeds are going to grow for you.

What they're used for what the vegetables are used for and how to plant them follow that and you'll be in postpone thing you want to pay attention to when you're planting is your sunlight. If you’re going to grow a bunch of very tall things like corn or sunflowers or other tall vegetables or trellising thing.You don’t want to have that on the south side of your garden where it's going tube shading the rest of your crops so on the north side of all your garden patches.

Where you're going to want to have all of your tallest stuff the shortest thing that should go on the south side that's going to make sure that as the Sun is tracing across the sky that you don't get anything shaded in your garden for longer than just to maybe a half an hour or so the shade the the shadows will move through your garden very quickly and they'll be very short.

Then you won't have trouble with things not getting sunlight caring for your garden is extremely important. Once you have things in the ground you’re not done the biggest mistake that gardeners make especially first-year gardeners is letting weeds get away from you. You have to stay out there as soon as you've planted but not more than one week should go by before you get backout into your garde.

And make sure you’ve picked all the little weeds that are going to start coming up especially if you’re using a fresh yard or manure compost you're going to have lots of little grass seeds and things like that that are going to be coming up get on that stuff right away.You won't have trouble with weeds your plants are going to grow better and you're going to feel a lot better about what you've done another thing.

You can do to control weeds is what I've done in our whole garden here and use woodchips are a free resource in our area anyway almost every city that I’ve been to has some type collection point for all of their tree waste they go into trim trees throughout the year if piles are the stuff .

You can go take it for free if your city doesn’t have that check your neighboring cities you probably will find something somewhere comp this this wood chip mulches an excellent way to keep weeds down between plants we cover our entire gardens with it every year around all of our plants.

It works very of our well water well water well water well water is very important especially for a young garden roots are very fragile things are very small seeds need to be you know while they’re germinating they have to stay wet it's great to get yourself a fan sprinkler sans sprinklers.

I have found to be the absolute best way to water a garden unless you're going to use some type of a permanent irrigation system with drip irrigation or something like that fan sprinklers are easy to move they are very gentle on your garden they cover a very large space that are great for seedlings as well as adult plants get yourself a good fan sprinkler.

I’ll put a link in the description to one on Amazon that's not cheap it's a metal one this one I got from Ace Hardware it’s all metal as well don't buy cheap fan sprinklers.

They're junk they will break they will leak the little gears won’t work in them and won’t work just buy a good sprinkler if you don't have a good sprinkler you're not going to water your garden enough.Your gear just things are not going to go well you're not going to have time to hand water everything once your plants are established they're nice and tall.

They don’t need to be watered quite as much it’s not going to hurt to water them every other day but you probably could get away with going on a vacation for a few days as long as it's not too hot and dry and not watering your garden.

But if you are going on vacation for more than a week or even a week make sure that you have somebody stop by and turn your sprinkler on at least one of those days especially if it's hot and dry we’ve made the mistake before of not watering come back to a dead garden.So you want to make sure that everything stays nice and nice and moist.

And watered keep those weeds down and you're going to end up having a great great harvest when it comes time in July August and September harvesting time is the September harvesting reward of all the work and all the time.

All the waiting it's a great time be prepared for what you're going to harvest make sure that you have canning supplies ready and sure that you have ways to preserve the things that you have if you're going too vacuum-sealed and freezers or foregoing to do canning or you're going to make things into jellies or jams or spaghetti sauces or whatever plan ahead weeks ahead of your harvest time. If you're upon the northern hemisphere like we are you’re not going to start getting Tomatoes probably until August.

At the earliest and August and September even into October sometimes be prepared to you’re going to have a whole lot of stuff coming in at once and you want to be ready to preserve that stuff there’s nothing worse than growing a big healthy garden all year long.Then wasting so much food because you didn't have time to preserve it think of the easy ways freezing and vacuum sealing is one of the best ways to go I'll put a link in the description again to a great vacuum sealer on Amazon they're an inexpensive investment and it's very inexpensive investment easy you can dice things up throw them in there vacuum seal it throw it in the freezer and you're done.

Now of course depending on what you drew there’s lots of thing lots of ways to utilize your garden all throughout the year especially by staggering your planting so if you really want to make the most of your time and your harvest throughout the year plant your quick growing things like your radishes and your leafy greens and things like that is staggered planting so plant some at the beginning of the year.

That maybe two or three weeks later plant another roller another section of like lettuces and things like that and then do the something in three weeks later that gives you a good staggered harvest for those kinds of things because lettuces and all your other leafy greens once they grow to mature they're not good anymore.

They generally will go to seed they get bitter you want the youngest leaves off the lettuces and things like that even for kales and spinach is and a lot of those things so staggering your planting is a great way to go to make the most of your harvest season for those types of plants alright so you’ve got all your vegetables you've harvested your garden but you're not quite done.

Prepare for Winter:

Yet cover that ground the best thing too to prepare your garden for the next year is to cover that ground whether you use a cover crop like a winter weed or something else that's going to grow into November and even to December you it’s good to keep root to the ground and things growing the other thing you Cando is use your leaf compost and other things from around the house leaf mulch Azure straw wood-chips cover that garden keeps it wet keeps it moist keeps the worms and bacteria’s and other things in your garden it doesn't dry out it doesn’t blow away.

You've got you prepare and hold that the nutrients and moisture that you have in that garden space for the next year so make sure that you cover the space leave all your you cover plants and all that stuff that tomato stocks us and sunflower stocks that have died off leave that stuff all on the ground you can take that out next year whatever hasn't broken down but all that stuff the nutrients in those stocks is going to go right back into the soil and get you ready for your next year.

How to Attract the Best Pollinators to Your Garden

We have a lot of fun planned we in this Article are going to be doing a few different projects that I've been needing to get done but they're all wrapped around the same theme and that is attracting more pollinators to your garden stick around.I'm brain with California garden TV.

And if you're looking to join a garden community that offers tips tricks and support to help you grow your own organic fruits and vegetables and become a little more self-sufficient along the way.So I know at this time of year we're all you know in a frenzy trying to get seeds started maybe setting out starts that we've already got going on if it's warm enough where we are and a lot of times we don't really pay much thought to pollinators that actually help our plants produce fruit.

Because if it weren't for pollinators we'd have plants and no fruit actually we wouldn't even have plants because we need the fruit to get the seed to make the plant so we'd be in a mess now i'm not gonna get on my high horse again about the lack of pollinators and that there's less and less of them every year especially bees but there are i've noticed it and if you've noticed that too.

Let me know down in the comments it used to be that one zucchini plant would keep you over stocked for the entire season and now it's like to get a good crop I've actually got a hand pollinate so there's definitely something going on so this year I'm making a specific point to leave spots in my vegetable garden to plant plants that attract pollinators mainly bees and butterflies now speaking of butterflies I'm gonna start off with the inspiration for this Article.

Yesterday morning I was walking through the garden and I happened to see something that I've never seen before in this garden and that happens to be a guy in here while they can't see but I'll get a close-up on him a monarch caterpillar I've seen other kinds of caterpillars in the garden but never a monarch now he just happens to be here because of the plant that's in here with him and that is milkweed now milkweed is basically the only plant that a monarch caterpillar will eat so if you want to attract them to your garden some milkweed milkweed is the only plant that monarch caterpillars eat so that makes it really great because if they come to your garden.

They're only gonna do one thing and that is pollinate not eat your veggies now this is a really cool project for kids so I'm gonna link one of these butterfly enclosures down below in case you want to try it out we've done it before and it's so fun to watch the entire change happen and if I can get it on camera I'll try to you know pass that along to you guys maybe over on Instagram so make sure you're following me there now within 2 or 3 hours of us putting him in here we didn't even need the milk milkweed in there because he's already hanging upside down preparing to become a chrysalis now there are a lot of different plants.

That will attract all kinds of different butterflies to your garden milkweed though is super easy so if you have monarchs in your area milkweed it's it's so easy it it's a perennial zones 3 through 9 full Sun it barely needs any water except in the driest conditions no fertilizer it's simple the leaves and roots though are toxic to humans so just keep that in mind now bees are the real heroes of the garden well right up there with earthworms but they're neck and neck and there's a wide array of plants that you can use to attract bees to your garden.

Now there's one thing that pretty much puts them all in the same category and that is an open center showing a lot of the anthers covered in pollen now you can see that here with the cosmos the poppies the marigolds and even the distortions have little pollen filled throats now one of my favorite things to attract bees is basil and I grow green basil for me and I grow purple basil for the bees once it blooms it's incredible the amount of bees you're gonna see buzzing around it I always plant tons all over the garden it's probably my favorite herb other than cilantro I am way behind on pricking out and dividing these basil seedlings and I always show them like this because it would take so much room and space under the lights in the garage if I did each one in their separate container.

How to 10X Your Vegetable Harvest

So I broadcast so them and then divide now if you've ever had a couple of seedlings come up in the same cell you either probably thin one out or try to divide them now when you try to divide them did you worry that you might kill one or both of them they're actually more resilient than you might think and there's a couple things you can do to make the transition easier I use a pencil to tease out the roots from one another and when I have them separated I take it by the leaf never the stem.

If you tear off a leaf the plant will grow a new one and continue if you break the stem it's all over you can transfer each one to its own container if it isn't time to plan outdoors yet or you can plant them directly into the garden if you remember to keep them moist one shrub that works really well for attracting bees.

They really love it and it's great because it's edible so it belongs in the vegetable garden is lavender I'm not going to go through how to grow lavender because I did a video on that a couple years ago in fact it's actually the first video on my channel that kind of really took off and went somewhere so if for nothing else then entertainment purposes I'll link it down below but today I'm gonna actually go out in the front yard and take cuttings of that lavender that I planted in that video so that I can propagate more and have them four back here in the vegetable garden so to propagate lavender from cuttings fill a pot with some really well draining potting mix you can add up to 50 percent perlite to increase drainage.

If you want to a lavender love drainage you want to pre moisten the potting mix and a terracotta pot works well because of its porousness but it's not required you don't want to choose growth with a bloom at the tip choose some fresh looking side growth and tear downward to get the heel the heel is where most of the roots will grow from remove the lower leaves.Because you want as few leaves on there as possible. Because you don't want the plant to be supporting leaves you want it to be focusing on root development once you have those leaves removed you can dip the lower tips in the rooting hormone. I'll leave a link down below to that if you need some.

And then you want to stick each of the cuttings right between the edge of the pot and the potting mix and that's really going to increase the drainage in the area around that little stem and so it's really gonna bring oxygen in there and not get too wet and be able to create roots as quickly as once you've got that done you're gonna put a plastic bag over the pot to increase the humidity and you're gonna put it in a warm shaded spot in four to six weeks you'll be able to cut one of the corners off of the bag to increase the ventilation and a few weeks after that you can remove the bag completely as root should be developing and at that point you can either plant each lavender into their own pot or put it right into the garden.

Honeybees were introduced to North America by early settlers from Europe and since that time they've become the most popular for sure in pollination and for honey making but did you know that before honeybees even arrived on the scene there were bees here already who did 100 percent of the bee pollination solitary bees like carpenter bees leaf cutter bees mason bees are three times better pollinators than honey bees honey bees are more interested in the nectar in the flower and they actually don't even care about the pollen whatsoever they'd avoid it.

If they could solitary bees on the other hand actually look for the pollen that's what they want that's why they end up pollinating your vegetables even better than honey bees a really cool thing about solitary bees is they only venture about a hundred feet from their nest to do all their work so if we can attract them to our garden they could be taking care of the pollination here whether honey bees showed up or not and one way to do that is by installing one of these it's a little bee hotel pterri be hotel now you can make these or purchase them and basically what it is is a bunch of bamboo tubes all pushed into one section what they do is they take their eggs and they put them in these tubes and then seal the tube off bees are fascinating I love watching them work both in the garden and in the hives.

How to Build a Raised Bed CHEAP and EASY

Raised bed ,Backyard Gardening:

I love designing and growing them but I also love other practical and convenient ways to grow food that's what I want to share with you today how to build your own cheap and easy raised bed garden let's go if you saw my last video.

Then you know I recently just took out a Red Delicious apple tree that I had planted in this section the reason I did that is because this hazelnut tree was just doing so well has just gotten so large that it shaded out this area way too much for that apple tree to produce and to do well. That's the reason I couldn't graft onto it or anything because it's just not getting enough light.

So I took that tree out right here and to replace this tree what I'm going to do is be building a raised bed in this section and there's a few different reasons why I'm doing one of the main reasons that I want to grow a raised bed in this section here and not just plan how I usually do directly into the ground is because I have this hazelnut tree behind me some of the other trees here and I don't want to disturb those roots this way by putting a raised bed in I'll avoid a lot of those issues that's the same reason people like growing raised beds in sections that are hard clay or if they have really rocky soil you can avoid some of those issues you're gonna run into by putting a raised bed in let's start building another reason I'm going to be building a raised bed here is because I'm running out of space to play my annuals with my new food forest and the trees are getting bigger the strawberries are starting to spread so I'm just running out of space to grow annuals and things.

Because I love planting them I love my tomatoes my peppers my lettuces and everything like that also a good reason to have a raised bed is if you're planning on growing in a section that you're renting or you're not going to be living there for a long time you may not want to waste a lot of time building your soil through mulching and stuff which can take years because you know you're gonna be out of that section soon so a raised bed it could be a good option for that we have all of our wood here.

Now the dimensions of the bed are gonna be 4 foot by 8 foot as you can see we're not using pressure-treated wood because we don't want the option of any of those chemicals or anything that's in it to mess with what we're growing and I'll talk more about the wood that I'm using as I progressed the wood that we're going to be using are 3 2 by 10s so 10 inches in this height right here at 8 feet long and then three two by fours at 18 feet long as well the only thing is the two by fours are just a little shorter than the 2 by 10 so we're gonna have to cut the 2 by 10 it's just a little bit bucks out here.

Relax and watch me and if don't feel comfortable cutting the wood yourself or you can do is if you go to Home Depot or Lowe's just make sure you have your dimensions before you go there and then let them know what they are and they'll cut the wood for you I had them do that for me before and they do an excellent job because they have a track saw it gets everything Square and perfect so let me just mark this here and then we're just gonna cut it with a skill saw for the cost of the two by tens you're looking at just over eleven dollars for the cost of the two by fours they're just over two dollars and you could do this without the two by fours to make it even cheaper but it's not gonna be as convenient as I'll show you we got the two of them cut and now they're all the same length so we like to say we cut those two two by tens down trim them just a little bit.

And I don't know why exactly that they they're not the same length as a two by fours but we'll deal with it next we're just gonna cut this piece in half and then one of these will be our top one the bottom and then these two are gonna be our size I got all my wood cut and before I start to build it I wanted to clean out this section here because I don't want to have to build it then move it it's gonna be pretty heavy when it's done so you're going to want to build it in this section that it's going to be i..

I have that section cleaned out now if you have grass here you may want to put down some cardboard or even some contractors paper but if you're going to go tend to stick like me you should be okay even just leaving it unless you have some strong perennial weeds next I'm going to be screwing this all together after I have it staged in the spot that I want it I'm going to be using three inch deck screws so they work well outside they're not going to rust or anything I don't want any rust in the garden and they're strong and long but first before we get to put those screws in we're going to want to pre-drill just so we don't split the wood and we're gonna have we have a countersink bit on here as well so I'll show you how to do that this wood right here is an inch and a half so we're gonna want to go about 3/4 of an inch in halfway we're gonna put four screws in just make sure it's strong and then that countersink just makes it so the screws won't stick out we got this screw started here.

Now we're gonna do our best to make it as flush on the top and as the back as we can make it okay that's one of the sides then we've got three more to go so let's keep going [Music] okay that's the last screw it looks good looks nice and square I'll check it again at the end but now I want to show you what the idea was with cutting the two by 10s in the same length of these two by fours so I can put these two by fours up here as a rail this isn't 100% necessary but it's going to help help hold the whole thing together. It's also going to be a nice little area for us to sit and reach into the bed so what we're gonna do is put a few pieces of wood in here to the inside this way.

I have something to screw that screw down to on this side and on this side here for this section here basically making these little cleats I'm just gonna cut this 8-foot piece into one foot sections this way I can get eight of them and you could just use scrap what if you want I just didn't have any on hand so I had to buy this extra piece [Music] okay I got these cleats all done.Now I'm just gonna put one here up like this one up here as well and then I'm gonna put two at the ends to kind of straighten everything up and make sure I have them flush at the top they're got the last support in it's coming out real well I'm happy with the way it looks and there's not much left to do so this build is almost finish.

And I can't wait to start getting a filter then get growing now let's get this side rail on make sure it's nice a good length. Because the rest of the bed I'm gonna be filling mainly with black leaf mulch which I get for free locally and that's highly alkaline the only issue is it can't really retain moisture so am i adding this it's gonna greatly increase its ability to retain moisture I'm gonna dump this in get some black leaf mulch and mix it all together and then I'm gonna add some my own homemade compost the best stuff you can grow with all right here's the first load of the black leaf mulch.You can see it's got a nice dark color to it so we're just gonna shovel all this in good local free resource that's another reason I wanted to do the raised bed because I knew I could get this locally for free so what I want to do is shovel all this in and I'm going to mix it up with the peat moss so it's almost like building our own soil because this mulch is high it's nutritious it's alkaline but it's just like I said it's not it can't hold water well it dries out quickly and then once it gets dry it's really hard to make it absorb water again.I'd say about 10 more wheelbarrows.
